Nice park. Unfortunately it was government shutdown today so information center was closed, but the park and trails were accessible. Trail walkways were bit icy but there was stream of fresh melted ice water along the trails, which was pretty scenic. Overall not a bad trail for 50 degrees weather, lot of spots along the stream for photography enthusiastics.
This is my go to place for hiking. I love the overall variety this place has to offer. The views are incredible and the serenity this place has to offer are the key reasons for my admiration. Theres something for every level of physical attributes. Just a stone throw away from the 5 boroughs. You just cant go wrong here. Enjoy
Friendly helpful staff at the center. Items seem a bit overpriced, but thats to be expected of most park info centers. They had tons of food and drink options as well as souvenirs. Make sure you buy a map or take a photo of it, we had no cell service for most of the time. Great hikes and lots of water!
Several trails accessible from here of varying difficulties. The park is free and never closes but the bathrooms/VC is only open weekends. You should buy a trail map from them and ask for suggestions. Small parking lot but you can also park on the shoulder. Leashed dogs are allowed. Best time to hike the Reeves Brook trail is after a good rain. When its dry head up to the Ramapo torne for great views.
The trails are nice but unfortunately people do not follow basic safety measures amid the pandemic. Parking lot is small, so expect to park on the road if you arrive after 8am on a Sunday. We could take a initial trail that wasnt crowded and had beautiful views, but on our way out we crossed at least 100 people out of which 80% were talking loud and didnt care to wear a mask when crossing other hikers. Disappointing lack of respect.
Arrived early (7:30am) and found a spot in the lot. The park ranger said it can get filled quickly so early is best. Since this was my first time, I chose an easy trail. The red square on a white background. There were inclined, lots of rocks to negotiate but no scrambling or crawling. The time of year was also super, cool in the morning and by 1:30pm, it was about 60°. Perfect for hiking. I wore layers and this too made my walk extra enjoyable. The park itself is very clean and visitors are encouraged to use the park waste bins before and after a hike. The brook was another feature I loved and the water was bone chillingly cold. I am planning to come back and try some of the other trails. Cant wait!
It’s closed more often then not and restrooms are open only when info center is open so... also, parking is usually full on weekends with cars spread along the road too. There are some good trails starting from the place so still a good opportunity to have a fun experience, but same can be said about any parking lot in the park - Is recommend a lake view.
Growing up in Bergen County, and having such a beautifully maintained state park so close has been a blessing all my life. I recently moved back from Chicago (where it is flat) and took a hike yesterday with some childhood friends.. It was stunning. The paths were clean and well defined, and other hikers were few and far between because the season is chilling down. This access point is a great place to begin; it has several paths leading from it. Anything you carry in, please carry out!
Hiking was great! The Information Center had lots of good stuff. The only thing I didnt like was that they closed at 5 pm on a weekend, including locking the bathrooms. The parking lot is small, but there was plenty of roadside parking. When we first arrived and I saw about 40 to 50 cars, I was concerned about seeing too many people, but within 15 minutes on the trail, there was nobody around, just the occasional passerby...Beautiful views from up high. And the Stony Brook is beautiful as well. A really great place to hike & picnic, and get away from it all for a day.
Wanted to post in case this helps somebody. We stopped by the Reeves Visitor Center. The reviews are true. The visitor center was open on Labor Day and the lady there was icy cold (it’s usually closed weekdays). If it’s open, you can stop here to pickup bug spray, guides, hiking stuff, use the bathrooms. Just don’t expect any recommendations. Asked her if she had any recommendations for an easy hike to the lake or nearby with a toddler and she kept trying to direct us to Bear Mountain. The parking lot was packed with lines out the door so we headed on to the Sebago Lake boat launch. Found a space there. We have a 19 month old. Wasn’t planning to do much. There is no stroller friendly path around the lake but there is a dirt path that leads to some grassy areas by the lake, which is enough for a curious and walking toddler. Across the road from the boat launch is the entrance to the blue path which we partially carried her, partially let her walk. plenty for a toddler. Bring some water and snacks. Can sit on the dock or grassy areas by the lake and you can see little fish swimming. Didn’t need to drive on to Bear Mountain.
Friendly and helpful, but a bit outdated. Maps bought mid-2018 are still dated from 2016. I dont expect trails change that much but still. The bathrooms are functional, if well used...plenty of rust everywhere but theyre kept reasonable clean. The bright side is the water in the sink is quite cold...nice to splash some after a long hike.
It is a nice information center. During primetime hours the building is open and they have a ranger there who can answer questions and suggest good hikes. The building also has a little store with some supplies you might need for a day hike, maps, state park T-shirts, and snacks. The building also has bathrooms and a bulletin board that is outside with a map and additional info on it so that you can see a map even if the building is closed. This info center is a good jumping off point for a few nice hikes. There is a trail to Pine Meadow lake and also a trail to Torne Mountain. There are hikes of all difficulty levels as well which is great if you want a casual stroll or if you want a strenuous hike.
Amazing hike this weekend going from red to yellow hitting the top— but please be careful!! At top of blue about to decend down orange, a very large rattlesnake was sitting beneath a mid trail rock. My husband and dog almost stepped on him. He became agitated and rattled, opening his mouth ready to bite. I was right behind them when I heard the sound and saw his head. Wow. Scary. Esp being at top of mountain with no cell reception. I would recommend anyone hiking here to bring a kit and wear high boots with jeans.
Great spot to start a hike, but when the weather is nice, you have to arrive early to get a spot in the small parking lot. Roadside parking is not allowed in Harriman, but near this information center, it seems to be tolerated (i would recommend only parking in official parking areas in the rest of the park!)
A nice easy to get to entry point for Harriman hiking. The easiest trails take you to Pine Meadow lake, which is very pretty. This parking lot is small, and cars end up parking along the road for almost a mile from the trailhead...so be prepared for some extra distance up front.
Never came across a person in any visitor center in North America this rude! Don’t think I will ever enter this visitor center again. My question was - do you have a map of this trail. Her answer in very arrogant tone was we have 200 trails in the area, I can’t sell 200 maps. She could have just said we have a book with all maps and I would have bought it.Anyways - it’s good to know what level of customer service you can expect around here...
Great trails that thin out with people very rapidly as they diverge from the trailhead. Parking deceptively good as you can legally park on the shoulder for quite a distance when the car park fills. Careful bringing kids and pets when parking on the road as in summer the road is narrow and there are regularly bikers buzzing past way above the speed limit.Lady on desk was patronising as it gets, essentially told me to turn around and go home as we’d got there later than 7am when the car park was full. If you’ve got 10 spaces, it’s going to get full even in a thunderstorm, you don’t need to swagger about it. Technically the road is parking too, so maybe just help instead?Totally unhelpful about trails, would rather spend time telling me how hot it is, how many visitors they’ve got and how much I apparently haven’t processed these two obvious facts. Decided to go on a rant about how I’d never park anywhere else in the park now (turns out Welch had ample parking, Tiorati wasn’t crazy, and most trail heads had parking space) rather than telling me where the parking spots are if I wanted to do other trails.Go for the trails don’t go for the friendly park ranger you’d love to meet cos they aren’t here.
This center is only opened on the weekends and during holidays. I am okay with that but restrooms should be available to people at all times. Parking space is okay but it fills up quickly. No drinking water available. You can only purchase it from the vending machines.
The woman at the desk was SO unfriendly. Wouldn’t give me ANY information on trails unless I purchased her 12 dollar map that didn’t even highlight any of the trails. She couldn’t tell me what trails to combine or which to take - just said “there’s 50 miles of trails you can take any one but better get the map because you’re going to get lost.”Gee, thanks for the information lady.

2021-10-09Great place to hike. Be aware that this site gets PACKED on the weekends especially in warmer weather. There are 2 small parking areas so if you want to use these spaces get there EARLY or you can park on the side of the road. They apparently dont seem to be ticketing people who do this anymore but saying that I also need to mention that sometimes there seem to be hundreds of cars doing this. This trail area has heavy people traffic...lots of day trippers. The views are great. Fairly easy loop trail that has some scrambling and a fairly steep climb at one point so keep this in mind if hiking in the rain

2021-12-30Well, this is a place right next to the road and its kind of strange for a visitor center. I was expecting a larger unit with a large parking lot. But it serves the purpose. This was the first hike I tried during the winter at 0C. The hike to the nearest water body is about 3miles one way be prepared for that if you are hiking in cold weather.

2022-05-10I would like to thank all the the incredibly insightful, smart, funny and interesting folks that stop into our sweet little Visitor/Information Center here at Reeves Meadow on 7 Lakes Drive in Sloatsburg, NY (located in Harriman State Park).I’ve had the pleasure of working here coming up on a year now, just providing local information about the Park and trails, along with a great desire for you to enjoy our little slice of paradise as much as I and my fellow coworkers do.I have to say, you make our days incredibly pleasant and interesting, almost to the point where it feels like we’re not even working. So thank you for stopping by, and don’t hesitate to come in a say hello!Happy Trails…Albert

2021-10-02Many trails start here. Free, with bathrooms. Small lot, everyone parks on 7 Lakes drive. Did the Diamond Mountain trail to Pine Meadow Lake. Did a loop around the lake, so-so.

2022-06-05Ended up going for a nice hike over here by Harriman, around. 30 mins drive from me. We wandered around aimlessly, but had somewhat an idea of where to go, we followed the trail markers, they were very clearly visible on the trees but there are some spots when it can be confusing. The view of the lake was really gorgeous, you could definitely fish there, although not sure if you can. It is definitely a great and rocky hike, reason why this is a four star is that they didn’t have the bathrooms opened.

2018-05-25One of the most beautiful parks Ive had the opportunity to hike. We start at the information center on seven lakes drive, an follow the marked trails up the mountain for a two hour hike up the mountain to a crystal clear beautiful lake on the top you can swim in. And then hike back down. When you are at the very top, you can see birds of prey circling in the valleys below on all sides, and you cant see any evidence of human habitation in any direction. Truly beautiful.
