Retro Fitness in other cities:
I love this place. It has transformed my sons life and mine. Ive been training all my life but my son ballooned up to 256lbs and hes only 22 and stands at 5 6. In 4 months x 6 days a week he has transformed from 256 lbs to 196 lbs and has brought us closer together. The staff at this location is A Class. Thank you guys for all you do!Felix Alvarez
WARNING if you sign up for this gym you will end up in collections if you ever try to cancel. Everything is fine until you attempt to cancel. When and if you cancel the emails are not being returned. The cancellation letters are not being received and your credit card continues to be changed. I read these reviews and signed up anyway. Now I realized how accurate those reviews are.
I have been a member for two years now, things were going well in the beginning.....a year ago things turned around for the worst: most instructors left the gym, most classes were cancelled, and a substantial number of members left. Not to mention the changes they made in theinterior layout of the training room and classroom, totally ridiculous and unsafe! Yesterday April 9th two of the three instructors/trainers also leftleaving members quite baffled and unpleasantly surprised. What next!of course we could always go to a different gym.....the other issue ishow to request cancellation of the contract , if a customer is not satisfiedand not getting their moneys worth, they definetly have a good claim.
Stay away from this gym and dont sign up with them. They are crooks and thieves. Plenty of other gyms you can join on the Island. Receptionist Michelle is rude and arrogant. Manager - Mike, horrible. It takes up to 6 months to cancel your membership. They tell you the only way to cancel your membership is in writing by certified mail. You literally have to go to post office - cant even use UPS or FedEx. Then a month later they tell you that they never received your letter. If you kept copies of what you submitted you are lucky, if you didnt, you are screwed. They really are despicable people. I ended up closing my credit card account so they couldnt bill me anymore. Stay away from this gym.
Do yourself a HUGE favor take this advice from me & don’t ever sign up for retro fitness one year commitment, I made that mistake. This gym is full of juice heads. There’s a reason it’s 20 dollars a month because the gym is kept in terrible condition. The owners linda & joe are money hoarding humans who’ll do anything to take money out of your pockets & into theirs. this dude named Andrew who I spoke to in the morning at the counter was super rude when my wife came to sign up and showed no sense of respect or etiquettes while he was on his phone on instagram. such a great location so sad it could’ve been used for a gym that was maintained by better owners and managers.
(I had to make this review a lot nicer because it was flagged by Google cause everything else I said in it was too mean) I never write reviews because I think theyre a waste of my time but I want to warn innocent people not to join this Retro Fitness. I signed up for personal training and my contract was due to end in May. Around February, I sent my cancellation notice to ABC via certified mail and was told there was nothing left to worry about. Then when the last week of May came, I asked for the specific day my contract is over and get called into the personal training office where Im told that the original manager who signed me up (hes since been fired) accidentally inputted my contract extra times in the system. So even though the contract I knew about has since been fulfilled, I still apparently had to send in another two month notice to ABC for the other contracts I had no idea about and fulfill another three months up to August. ........ WHAT! The guy tells me that since hes been fired, theres nothing that can be done and I still have to be responsible for the extra left over contracts the previous guy accidentally inputted, that I had no clue existed. Meanwhile, he tells me that I have no way of proving that I didnt give him permission to accidentally input the extra contracts, so hes not going to void them ---- all the while conceding that the guy previously holding his position made a mistake that he should have noticed. It was absolutely wild the level of incompetency on display. It was settled after I contacted and hounded corporate. Dont let these people bully you into letting them take your money.
Gym is absolutely horrible. Half of the equipment is broken, there hasn’t been hot water in days. Absolutely horrible management. For a “franchise” to have a gym in such horrible condition is completely unacceptable.RETRO corporate needs to find new ownership. This location is a JOKE.Forget updating for new equipment I would be happy with them finally fixing the broken equipment.Membership isn’t worth $20 a month
Extremely disappointed, after reading all the reviews I still met with Juan the personal trainer manager at the moment. And signed up for 3 months personal training. But after 2 weeks, my amazing personal trainer, Victoria, got FIRED. I wanted to speak with the manager but he left the job also. Now I’m left with nobody and retro fitness better not scam me cause I already told my bank prior to warn them about my retro payments.
Fraudulent charges, thieves (literally), poorly maintained. The only reason this gym stays open is because of their never-ending fraudulent charges. There is no way to cancel the gym even if you follow all directions. You will need a lawyer to fight it. I went through the entire 5 month process (certified letter, intent, proof, etc.) back and forth for a long time now and unfortunately it is hopeless. Read the contract if you are debating to sign up- you are signing up with ABC Financial, a collections agency that does not take phone calls only certified mail. I waited the year to cancel when my initial period was over and still battling for more than 6 months trying to cancel (after my obligation has been completed!). There are hundreds of loopholes they have in their contract to continue billing you forever plus the annual fee. Youve been warned, STAY AWAY!
The Hours on Sunday are posted wrong, Lots of 20 year olds just walking around on their phones, half the people are not wearing mask, half the treadmills dont even work. No clear path to walk, because its overcrowded and junked up with machines. And forget trying to find a paper towel or some sanitize wipes.
This is the worst gym membership to purchase. Stay clear. They have continued charging me for months after I cancelled my membership. I have been told various things by different employees regarding cancellation which shows an overall lack of oversight by management as they cant properly train their employees or they are simply making fraudulent charges. I got a voicemail stating my service would be cancelled after April and still got charged for May. Absolutely ridiculous crookery.
Hi ,try to go at least 4times exercise this gym,I feel so comfortable and enjoy!Great staff, and wanna to say to people who complain about cleaning, hey people. who work out there too ,clean after your selfs and we are be good and sanitized .But I see some people don’t care, and dirty, work out on equipment never clean after them selfs, disgusting! And smells after some people terrible,so use deodorant at least sometimes deam! You are not alon at the gym!!!!
Clean, laid back overall aura, hard working motivated staff, huge selection of machinery, free weights, judgement free, beautiful girls, ok selection of music, could do alittle better, i guess I’m alittle bit more hardcore, they should play Deborah De Luca, than you would get 6/5 stars. Love this gym. Such a cool vibe being on the second floor looking at the free landscape area of staten island across the street with the sunset doing my abbs, dawn makes me feel like im in some doomsday movie like im looking at Mars from the space shuttle Retro
The place gets the job done we go 5x a week. But the equipment is starting to look outdated and they never keep this place clean. When you walk into the lobby the floor looks like it is moving from the amount of ants that are around. The paper towels and wet towels are almost never refilled, making it so you can not clean off your machine when you are done. I am thinking of changing to a gym that actually keeps up with the facility and wants customers to not feel like they are in a germ infested area.
Be very careful when joining this gym. They make it very easy to join and tell you how great it is but completely ignore the cancellation policy which I found out the hard way by having to pay $140 to get out of my agreement. My wife and I were injured in a car accident back in June and put our account on a freeze for three months. (My wifes account was on freeze prior as well because she was pregnant) We get results from our doctor indicating nerve damage in our neck and back and basically tells us we cant go to the gym anymore. I send in a certified letter stating I want to cancel. I get an email a few days later stating our agreement stipulates that we have a few months left and we have to keep paying. I go to the gym and bring a doctors note stating we cannot go anymore and I speak to the general manager Russell. Russell basically accused me of lying by stating numerous times that I cant be injured enough if I was able to walk up the steps to get to the gym and that I seem look ok to him. I advised him again I have nerve damage in my neck and my wife has it in her back and, yes, I am able to walk and go up steps but I cant be in a position where my neck may get tensed up. Again, Russell didnt care and gave me an attitude as to why I cant just use the treadmill. I didnt join the gym to use a treadmill. I joined to use the weights. He also brought up that first my wife needed an account freeze due to pregnancy and that she then allegedly got into a car accident. In the end, Russell basically said Im the idiot for not reading the fine print of the membership agreement; and I guess I am and it cost me $140. Ive been recently reading most gyms cancellation policies and they seem to be very similar so I would advise anyone looking for a gym to read the fine print carefully and would also recommend to avoid this gym because if you get injured somewhere and are not in a wheelchair they will basically accuse you of lying (even if you have a legitimate doctors note, which by the way, he didnt like either because it wasnt specific enough). And on a side note, good luck if you ever have to call their main corporate headquarters. No one is ever there and no one responds to emails.
Decent offerings. Decent size. Not the biggest Retro Ive visited. Staff is friendly however somewhat aloof. Limited number of different machines. Limited number of duplicate machines which usually increase wait time during busy hours. Heavy emphasis on body weight and free weight offerings, which seems to be Retros style of gym. TVS on the cardio machines are a nice touch. At least the membership allows visits to other Retros which have more amenities, etc. Worth the membership, esp. when the fees are waived in January.
Please dont ever sign up with this Gym.I had the worst time and experience with them, and even if you sign up be very careful and read everything before you sign up.My contract with retro was supposed to end on december 2015,but somehow they still charging me every month!!!They renewed my contract without my permission...Even though I went there and told them my situation they dont care,I asked to speak to a manager but every time I went there he wasnt there, also he was supposed to call me back but he nevere did,in other words this gym and its crew sucks.Let me give you some more info :If you ever wanna cancell your membership you re gonna have to go through the usps and send them a certified letter in writting showing that you wanna cancell your membership and wait another 2 months before they process anything and then cancell your membership.I know its ridicoulous but this is just them ripping off your money. So again you better think twice before you sign up with this gym.
I had a terrible experience at this gym, literally the worst. Two months ago I went in for a free personal training session because it was my birthday. This turned out to be a total scam, the personal trainer was wearing combat boots and was on her way out the door when I got there, she trained me for about 10 mins and was like oh sorry I have to leave but you can talk to my boss. Well I spoke to her boss Nick and said I would like to try out the personal training session for only one month I specifically said one month. Well Nick defrauded me and lied to my face and signed me up for 12 months. I called the gym for two months straight before anyone told me Nick was fired for defrauding customers and that I was in this ridiculous contract for services Im not even using. The new manager said he would give my name to the regional manager to see what can be done. Welp that was a lie because I called several times and was given the run around, everytime it was oh the regional manager will call you. No one called me I had to physically go to the gym and demand my money back before I was told oh yeah we cant do that we can canceled your contract but you have to pay for the 60 day notice policy. Uhm excuse me I did not sign up for 60 days of personal training I signed up for one month. So now Im stuck with this foolishness, an incompetent and swindling management and all round bizarre gym, and to make matters worse they got rid of the spin bikes, one of the only reasons I go to that gym in the first place is for the spin bikes. They didnt even have the decency to leave one for people who actually like to spin. DO NOT USE THIS GYM!!! spear yourself the headache and frustration!!!
Place is a joke. Their billing policies are near criminal. You need to give them a 3 month window of cancellation and cant be done in person, must send a certified letter not to mention this is even when you fulfilled any initial contract clauses. Were duped into thinking membership was cancelled when membership was originally purchased at Tottenville but transferred to Richmond Ave. Many months of unnecessary billing where it went unnoticed. Went into collections, we will be taking them to court. If you are seriously looking to join a gym, go to LA Fitness.
Love the gym. My bad experience I have is the place always have the dumb bells missing out of place or not re racked. ESP on the leg press machine. Members are always stacking weights on the machine but cant take them back off. When they finish using the machine they just walk off. How lazy can people be really 6-10 plates on each sides. You can put them on the machine, well them use your hands and remove them as well?!?!?!?!?! The staff should be monitoring member who fail to comply with etiquette and rules should be told to remove the weight and re rack the dumb bell fail to comply you will be removed from the gym.God for bid if some has to remove Ten 45lbs plates from u leg press machine and it falls on someones foot. You will have a lawsuit
This is absolutely worst gym Ive been to. Tried the one day pass today for the first time and I was on the bench rack warming up with my bag next to me. The moment I left to go spot my friend at the squat rack, the personal trainer Mike took the rack away from me while being rude to my friend and I. He told my friend and I that thats how the gym works and if we try to make a commotion hes going to revoke our membership. This place is a joke lol...
Horrible customer service. I was harassed at the gym and wanted out of my contract because I was scared for my safety. The girl at the desk was completely dismissive of my issue. I will NEVER return to this gym and will never sign a contract again. Disgusting people! Also the gym is small and its hard to navigate around all of the equipment, all equipment are piled on top of each other. Totally disgusted with this place. Will not recommend.
BEWARE OF CONTRACTTwo months into my contract, I wanted to cancel. Sure, I can either pay upfront the full contract or cancel when its fulfilled TEN months later for a total of TWELVE MONTHS. So, of course because I authorized the contract, I didnt argue. I decided to keep the monthly revolving charge in case my daughter wanted to go during the year. The girl on the phone gave me the date that I can cancel without penalty. I paid my obligation the rest of the year - with less than 10 visits to the gym - and on the day I was told to cancel - i must email my request. Fine. Two attempts. Cute.I finally get a response telling me that i need to pay ANOTHER MONTH because they require 30 days notice to cancel. Real cute. After explaining that I wasnt told to cancel in month 11 - but TWELVE - AFTER THE CONTRACT IS PAID ... they have no record of this. Um. How could there be a record of I wasnt ALLOWED to cancel until my contract was fulfilled - as per the young girl - when i called? And according to the reviews i see im not the only one dealing with unethical charges when canceling AFTER your contract is fulfilled. Youre telling me that this company is hurting THAT BAD that they cant grant an immediate cancellation AFTER a contract is fulfilled? Give me a break. Very poor practice. So beware: Your TWELVE MONTH CONTRACT is actually a MINIMUM THIRTEEN month.
While I normally go to hylan Blvd. Location it has become easier for me to go Richmond Ave. During the week. I have been there several times. Its clean, not busy and everyone is nice. However!!!! I have called several times about getting personal training set up and cant get any info . I have left my # but no one returns the call. 😤 This is 2 weeks I could have been training! I calledthe other location and they answered all my questions and said come in and sit with a trainer and set it up. So do you not have any trainers at the Richmond Ave. Location???Signed,Annoyed customer!
The personal training management is absolutely ridiculous. I signed up five months ago for a Month-By-Months agreament. But after the third month they kept charging my bank account and when i got in touch with them, they say that i signed up a 1-year contract ! And i never signed anything and they dont even have a copy of that contract. Plus the equipments are always out of order and not working !! NOT A GOOD BUSINESS AT ALL ! THEY ARE ALL ABOUT YOUR MONEY !!!!
I wish I could give this place no stars. The place is filthy. Its obvious they do not clean it. There is dust and dirt everywhere and there are never any antibacterial wipes, so the machines must be a breeding ground of filth. Staff do not acknowledge anyone when you walk in and are always chatting or on their cell phones. Personal trainers are training their clients right on top of you. No matter what time of day I go it is packed out and prevents me from doing a proper workout because I cant get on any machines.
For the past few weeks this location has constantly not opened on time , progressively getting to the point of being 20 minutes late yesterday and 30 minutes late today. The woman who opens on the weekends is wonderful, always perfectly on time. The gym is very good, but it rarely opens on time monday through friday.
The place is decent enough for a workout, look people its $20.89 a month if you want 5 stars go to the other gyms that charge you $75 a month...I cancelled a few months ago and followed the rules read your agreement before signing if you are going to complain! Geez...thinking of signing back up.
Hi,My name is Aaron Thomas from staten island, NY. I am a member of retro fitness and had signed up for the membership in January 2017 as there was a special going on with 0 down and 20$ per month and also if i take a Personal Trainer for a month i get a month free for PT. I was told to meet Nick at richmond hill road (springville) location near trader joes in Staten island. I took the benefit for the PT for a month and was told to contact Nick once i see the charge for the PT on the CC so that he can go ahead and cancel the PT so that I dont get charged in the next month bill. When I signed up and used my card/swiped my card and was told to sign it on the Trackpad to get the receipt which I did for the month as a new customer. I was trying to get hold of Nick but he was never available in person nor on the phone. I even checked with my PT and he said you will have to call and speak to Nick regarding the agreement which he gave me. I later found out that he was fired my that location or Retro Fitness becuase he was trying to dupe customer and making them sign up and give out false information so on and so forth. I was told to speak to another PT manager his name is Anthony in the same location. He apologized with what happened and told me that he will speak to the district manager and have it resolved and when he got back to me he said that he had a conversation with the District manager and gave me a resolution saying that Nick signed me up for the whole year contract and said that we can cancel that out and charge you only for 6 months agreement instead of whole year. I said that it was misrepresentation and Nick never gave me any paperwork for the signed agreement when the time I initially used to my card for PT. I now get to know that he Nick lied to me and now im stuck with these charged coming up on my card every month when I am not even using the services. I only took the PT for a month as per what Nick had signed me up for the receipt which I had received at that time. I am really very unhappy with what was told to me and what im getting it. I have stopped taking the PT sessions more than a month now. I would really appreciate it if you can have this membership cancelled for me and have the charges stopped on my credit card. Awaiting for you speedy response with the above issue. Please let me know what and how i can go ahead and cancel this membership as I am not happy with what is provided to me.PATHETIC AND FRAUDS!!!!DONT JOIN EVER
Been trying to cancel a joint membership for two years now and I’m still getting charged. Everyone I talk to gives me a different excuse. It’s sad to see they put so much effort into twisting words instead of customer satisfaction which should be their priority. I would never recommend this company to anyone I wish I could rate this place as 0 stars as well.
DO NOT JOIN RETRO FITNESS . After cancellation of personal trainer . retro fitness still billed me upon request for refund they told me it should take 3 to 5 day after two months Im still waiting for refund and the manager tells me no new update upper management is now handling it . Upon request for phone numbers for upper management im told they cant give me any numbers to talk to upper management
If your looking for 5 star service then your gonna have to pony up about $60 or more a month.. You get what you pay for... 20$ a month and I get my basic workout needs ... Im in... Work out .. And Im out. Nobodys starting fights with you in here.. People are pretty much friendly and keep to themselves .. I feel its a fair deal for the price. Even ballys is asking 40 or more a month now .
Their service is horrible. Getting a membership takes a minute but when you want to cancel they dont let you. Six months Im trying to cancel it and there is no way to cancel the membership. I literally tried everything.. I called them, sent letters, talked to the manager but nothing works. They say they cant help unless I send letters which I did but they claim that they never got anything. Dont ever go there its horrible service.
I only come in for the weightlifting. Its obviously getting more attention these days but 2 squat racks are a plus. One time someone puked or spilled a drink and no one cleaned it up the whole time it was there, but they seemed to get all over my ass for not having the proper gear. I take off a star for the puke and a star for the complaint, but other than that...this gym does its job and its also on the cheap.
This place is the worst! They are supposed to be open at 4:00am. The kid is always late and just shows up whenever he wants. Ive seen numerous people just drive away after waiting for it to open... You think management would replace this irresponsible employee. Switching to another branch in Queens by my job.
PONZE SCAM gym, FYI to cancel membership you need to write a letter in certified mail at post office to their credit card processor in Arkansas, no ability to cancel over phone or fax or email, no ability to cancel, suspend membership, they will bill annual fee still.
This is the worst experience i ever have with this place they are professional with steeling , 4 month ago i want to cancel my membership til now they charge me , i call them to cancel my membership they told me you have to come to the store i went to the store they told me no you have to write us a letter i send a letter,so they charge me again i called they said its 2 months cancellation and he hang on me OMG steeling companies

2021-11-24Watch out, this gym will charge you even though I canceled the account. Now they put my account on collection. Unacceptable. Dont bill accounts during the pandemic when the customers dont show up, especially when they canceled the account.

2021-04-25Nick is absolutely professional, polite and helpful. The facility is always kept clean and there’s always space for social distancing. The one complaint I have is their cleaning guy. He is always around while you’re trying to work out. Administration should tell him to be more invisible. Otherwise I enjoy this gym very much.

2021-11-23There has been no hot water in this gym 4 weeks to take a shower. This is a chronic ongoing problem at this gym, we have made several complaints however it falls upon deaf ears. This is been the issue on and off for two years now. Its awful to sweat and then want to take a shower before going out into the cold only to take a cold shower. Horrible.

2020-09-13Retro Fitness has been my gym since they opened. under new management for the past two years this has been a positive experience. The staff is extremely helpful, kind, respectful, knowledgeable, professional. Retro has everything you’re looking for in a fitness center. A wide open floor plan setting. With turf, excellent Cardio equipment, variety of weights. Mirrored all the way around. Bathrooms are fresh and clean, lockers the same. Has a Beautiful room for classes, or private training, has babysitting room with televisions for your little ones. Refreshment center always stocked. The shakes are supreme. Personal training if you so desire. And the Members are some of the nicest people you’ll ever train with. I give Retro Fitness new Springville six stars!

2021-01-12I have been a member at Retro Fitness since they opened. I visit the gym almost everyday and have aways been greeted by friendly staff and a clean environment. The owners Linda and Joe and their children treat their members like family. They always do their best to accommodate everyone’s needs. It’s a great place with great people.

2020-09-10Clean, spacious facility. Courteous staff. Best of all, courteous members = proper gym etiquette. Unlike NYSC and LA Fitness where the free weights are always littered all throughout the place, Retro members seem to exercise better etiquette by actually putting weights back where they belong. Might sound trivial but it’s not. It’s refreshing. A+++

2021-03-11I was charged for a membership I canceled on November 2020. Due to the lock down. And I got charged 3 months after for months I never used. I have been trying to reach the manager for the past 3 days but the manager never shows up to the location or return my calls. What is going on?

2020-09-21I wanted to post my impressions after the Covid opening in Sept. Ive been coming here for three weeks since its reopened and things are always evolving for the better and I really like the new open layout. I feel that its much better overall. The weight area used to be very cramped when it reopened but that is not the case now. They are constantly trying new layouts for the equipment to provide ample room to lift and I think they are in a great stop at the moment. There is now a sperate area for exercises that take more space like deadlifting, CrossFit and HIIT workouts. This is fantasticThe staff has been great and I can always find cleaning wipes for the equipment along with hand sanitizer. There are some people who are working out that nose mask or not masking at all but its few and far between. Most people that come here at the times that I go are respectful, rerack weights and try to keep some space. Its a great clean and convenient gym and I definitely feel comfortable working out when I go. You can tell management cares and is already trying to make the gym space better.
