Riko Chelsea in New York
RIKO should really consider having a more polite presence at door. Ordered the chicken which was actually pretty good, but was turned off by the rude service. First, her (the counterladys) side item description was confusing but she seemed impatient when asked to repeat it. Then she decides to just keep the change and walk quickly away to the back as if nothing happened. When I got my food and asked for the change, she said she didnt have change but could give me a few extra green sauce containers. A business not having change? Incredible.
The chicken: juicy and deeply savoryUnless you get them on a bad day,Which can be random. Might be dry,Scrawny, or so salty you wanna cry.The consistency thing is a problemAnd the staff there, well, I dont love them.(They might even argueRight there in front of youβ¦Its happened to me.Or they act like they dont see.)But I dont demand perfect behaviorWhen the food is so full of flavorAnd affordable; thats the key here.So relax, and order a Peruvian beer. The rice and beans are a solid hitAnd the ceviche, I just crave it.The green sauce is to die for.So Ill keep going back for moreβ¦
The rotisserie chicken was flavorful. I also had the salad & french fries. The service was good. I recommend going early because it is a small restaurant & is quite popular. Its in close proximity to Penn Station. Great place to pop in for a bite on a bus or train layover.I plan to eat here on my next NYC visit.
A small but welcoming space where the food is good and the service very prompt. The specials at the front of the menu are the stars, and only slightly more than their dressed down counterparts at the menus rear. Its worth the few extra dollars. Try the chorizo and shrimp paella.
Seating is tight at this spot. We had two servers. One was nice, the other had a little attitude especially towards one of the females in my 5 person group. Food wasnt anything special and we all tasted eachothers dishes. We were asked to pay the bill and rush out to make room for a large party. Like that was our concern. Will probably never come back here but cannot say for the price, that the food wasnt decent and generously proportioned.
Great spot for a quick and hearty lunch. The Combo #1 for $7 is a quarter chicken with rice and beans or for $9 you can get a half chicken. The chicken was flavorful and not dry at all. Make sure you use up your green sauce. It gives it a nice kick and ups the flavor. It is packed in two containers (chicken separated from the sides) so the portions are pretty large. The service is quick and friendly; a great place for the area.
The food is really good but service is a bit slow sometimes. But you can call ahead so they can start working on your order, especially if youre ordering the paella, which takes time to make, according to the staff. Doing this saves me at least 10 minutes of wait time, which is great, especially when youre on an hour lunch break!
A pleasant find near Penn Station and Hudson Yards. I went on a Friday night around 6:10pm and found the place already pretty packed! Fortunately there was still a table for 2, and we got the famous pictured dishes: pineapple fried rice with chicken & shrimp (served on top of a half pineapple) and steak with fries and plantains (with rice and black beans included). The fried rice was a must, and plantains also was very delicious (sweet and well cooked). The portion was very generous for the price we paid. The place definitely was louder (narrow space with tighter seating) but holding conversations was still possible. The servers were very friendly- would go back if Iβm in the area looking for a good place to dine.
Loved it, service was quick during lunch, we got seated super fast, food was delicious and cheap. We had the #2 lunch special, it includes 1/2 a rotisserie chicken, rice and beans with a container of green sauce and corn thingies. all that for $9 bucks.Solid investment if you ask me.Service was excellent and the servers were friendly and happy to be there.only problem is that their hot sauce aka green sauce is super weak and they still dont have a liquor license.
I consider myself to have been a good client for you. but today the food was lousy. terrible, the rice without flavor, the beans without salt, the burnt tostones, the container full of oil from the fried sweet plantain. I think that people who prefer Latin food do not deserve a bland meal. Too bad its not the same quality anymore.
Terrific experience: delicious Peruvian traditional meals, I had Lomo Salteado and red sangria minus the sprite soda. Delicious. Use the white sauce they serve you as munchies with the roasted corn nuts on your meal, delicious flavor. Good meal portions.Great service. Delicious food. Friendly staff.
This was an interesting experience. So I normally review on Yelp and I went ahead and told my friends to join me for some $4 sangrias which was frustrating to retrieve when the waitress had to call her manager to confirm this. She took down our order and then her manager comes back to ask us our order again. It was quite funny, because he gets my order wrong and then says thats what I asked for when I told the waitress passion fruit sangria. He was rude and I didnt like that kind of customer service because instead of changing my drink he just added a few splashes of passion fruit, touched my straw which I put my mouth on with his hands ew and was super rude.We got the family style whole chicken that comes with a plate of four pieces which has thigh and leg, avocado salad, French fries, rice and beans. The green sauce they put on the table is spicy and goes so well with the chicken. The food was delicious however I couldnt STOP thinking about a dead fly falling on my plate of food from above my head where I was sitting in the far left corner. The place is tight, cheep, and poor serviced.
The place and food was alright. The portion was good but I didnβt find anything remarkable or memorable in the taste of the food. I ordered the spicy seafood, but was a bit let down at the spice level---as in I barely tasted any spice. The servers were cordial and prompt though, so thumbs up for that. I didnt much like the large TV screen at the front. It was kind of distracting.
It was the second time I came here and found roaches on the floor (the first time it was walking on the wall - and I had forgotten I did). But I was in a rush and remembered Id been to this place before, so went back in. Ordered the $30 chicken meal. The chicken had been overly seasoned and obviously microwaved like for 30 seconds, because it was warm, extremely dried to the point the wings were almost not visible. The seasoning was extreme, and me and my guest ended up burping this chicken all evening, disgusting!!!The rice had some nasty taste, like lard or something was used... and the beans were obviously out of a can, not even decent.... The green sauce had a piece of red onion from some previous user, and the container had a ring from the sauce which had been refilled right below the ring... The spoons were greasy from previous greasy hands. The roach on the floor did not help.We tried a soup which was also greasy, had pieces of roasted chicken, adding to the grease and overly seasoned taste.Overall Nasty
The place is small, but comfy. Service is great. But the food is not a great Peruvian representation.I ordered a Ceviche (just fish) it was fresh but it was flavorless just taste to lemonade. Only decorated with onion and sweet potato. Not potato or Peruvian corn or toast corn. The huancaina sauce was too watery. The chicha morada was good and the arroz chaufa or fried rice with meat was decent.
My order was really salty. Their customer services was good.We ordered choritos a la chalaca and lomo saltado. Both came very salty. We let our main waitress know about the appetizer being too salty. She apologized however, when we let the second waitress know about the main dish being too salty. Her answer was I shouldnt have eaten it. I couldnt finish my main dish. The manager and our main waitress were nice enough as to replace my main dish. I am not sure if will come back or if I would recommend this restaurant.
Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. The place wasnt too busy, and we were seated immediately. The food was reasonably priced, filling, and flavorful. The waitstaff was attentive and friendly, and happy to offer suggestions. Only real complaint is that the music was a bit too loud.
Caution. After exploring Times Square, my wife and I dropped by hoping to try authentic Peruvian rotisserie-style chicken, but were utterly disappointed. The chicken is over-salted and the skin is not crispy even sticking to my fingers in a weird elastic way. Not only that, but prior to ordering I asked whether the chicken was freshly made which might have been the case other days but ours clearly wasnt, even showing signs of dehydration. If youre Peruvian, avoid this place. If not, its still an overpriced underwhelming meal although I cant vouch for other options they serve.
A very clean place, I ordered a choufa rice and wine. The waitress took our order quite fast but it took a long time for our order to be prepared. The rice and seafood tasted great but arrived cold. I would definitely come again but suggest that our food be warmer when it comes to the table. Wine was very good, peruvian wine. Would recommend.
Overall great experience. Fast, tasty and affordable. You can dine on a full meal for under $12 while watching international soccer on 2 flat screen TVs. The chicken is juicy and well seasoned. A must see restaurant while avoiding the fast casual selections around Penn Station Area. Hidden gem worth multiple visits.
Terrible food !!! We ask for an appetizer something called picada limeΓ±a the white cheese tasted like fridge so nasty!! chicken had no flavor and the fries were so greasy it made a pond of grease in my plate. My husband order a arroz con mariscos and it was so greasy he couldnt eat it! Stay away from this place!!! Save your money!
Great home style food served in large, sometimes huge portions at very good prices. Half rotisserie chicken with one side costs less than $10 and makes for a hearty and delicious meal. Located in a very convenient spot half a block from Penn station where solid food is hard to find. Favorites include rotisserie chicken with magical green dipping sauce and ceviche.
Not only was the food delicious and authentic, they also served big portions! The servers were very friendly and welcoming as well.Latin music being played in the background and the Peruvian staff made this experience complete!Absolutely worth coming to here!Thank you for the evening!
Perfect Latino spot to have a good and delicious lunch, I walk into this place with 2 of my friends, they have a good combination plate, 1/4 or 1/2 chicken with French fries and salad or rice and beans, if you want to change one of the side you have to pay 75 cents extra which I think not that bad.The server is very good and fast , he also was great as our server was very nice and constantly checked on us. The other part of the staff was very nice and friendly.I think this is one of the best chicken coalve I had eaten here in NYC.
Foods average at best. Flavors dumned down for the usual Manhattan palate. I ordered a family pack with roasted chicken and the such. I know the chicken was rostisurie style but that was charred down to a burn taste. The salad was bland and tasteless. The rice and beans tasted more like Dominican style beans than anything Ive tasted.
Delivery was superfast through Seamless. Almost too fast - I ordered when I was 15 minutes away from the hotel I ordered, as it would take ~50 minutes to be delivered. When I got to the hotel, it was just being delivered. The fries I had were literally the worst I have ever had - very soggy, barely fried it seemed. I also didnt like the Green Plantains. The whole rotisserie chicken is a good deal - a whole chicken for $11 or so, but it was not my favorite either. Quite chewy.
Rude lady on the counter. Popped in for lunch and the lady on the counter was very rude. It was dead empty, i walk in and no greeting or anything. She was doing her thing door 5 minutes. I asked her for lunch specials and she responded rudely and fast which i didnβt understand. Ended up ordering the chicken. She took the money, said 10 minutes and walked away. No thanks or anything. Loud annoying Spanish commercials were playing on the TV.
The staff at this restaurant are rude, unprofessionals in so many levels.I have spent 6mns 33 seconds repeating myself mostly giving my number despise me saying it in Spanish too .When I was finally able to place my order, them nasty employees told me that they dont have the time to tell me the price for my food after passing the phone from one to another. However they kept on asking me to be shouting on top of my lungs for them to hear me despite me telling them that their background noise is loud and needed to be reduce. My first time being around this neighborhood, was the worst experience for me dealing with this restaurant unprofessional employees.Whomever is the owner, you need to retrain your employees in how to answer the phone, to be professional and courteous.I am so upset and got so many more things to say but I will stop here. That was my first , last experience and will never deal with your restaurant anymore.
Place is small, tables are very close to each other. Food was good. My friend and I had jalea (fried seafood) and it was a lot of food for just two people (my fault for not asking the serving size). As a peruvian I would say it was good. Not like wow its amazing, just good. The service was ok. I just didnt like the place was small. Its a good restaurant to go to when in the area.
OVERALL: GREAT FOOD, REASONABLE PRICES, AVOID IT AT RUSH HOUR BECAUSE IT GETS TOO CROWDEDLOCATION: About half a block from Penn Station, it is very accessible from many hotels in the area.FOOD: Very good food, tasty and there is a variety of options available.SERVICE: Ultra friendly servers, very polite.COMFORT: The place itself is very small; tables are tiny, all very crowded in a long and narrow corridor. The place gets too crowded and noisy around rush hour so if you can, try it at non-rush hours.
The service was rather lackluster. The waitress never came by to refill our drinks or even ask if we were ready for the bill. They were extremely condescending to us as well. The food itself was decent but the service left a rather bad taste in my mouth. The blonde woman at the front counter even said to me Make sure to include the tip, thats not included in the bill as if I didnt already know that and hadnt read it on the receipt. The food isnt good enough for us to come back, frankly.
The service was good, but the food was only partially peruvian. The ceviche was acid, almost as if they added something to the lemon juice. The seafood rice was mediocre and the fish were not fresh, rather frozen. The dish called Jalea was overcooked and the batter fell off the seafood easily. Their best dish was the Lomo Saltado which had a wok flavor to it.
New York has good Peruvian restaurants but in my opinion the best ones are in Queens. However, this little restaurant in Manhattan deserve some credit. In general is a good restaurant to visit for lunch during the week. 1) ambiance is crowded and very noisy when busy, 2) service is okay. Some servers are very cordial and welcoming some others are in a rush, 3) food we ordered (ceviche and chaufa de mariscos) were good but not excellent. Having said that I would definite recommend it and will return for lunch and quick dinner. not for special occasions.
Small space, but its right by Penn Station, so it was super convenient for my eventual trek back to the boonies, aka Long Island. Everything but the chicken is pretty pricey for some reason. Like for example, ceviche will run $13 and above. Granted, the portion size is bigger than usual, but I just wanted an appetizer portion. Flavor on ceviche was pretty good and it came with corn and yam (I think). The chicken was juicy and flavorful. Their other dishes looked amazing, like the garlic shrimp and the other seafood platters.
Love this place, mainly for the food. The staff is ok and does not provide you with much attention. The main highlight here however is the food, the chicken is falling off the bone, the rice is delicious and rich with its bean side and the salchi papa is awesome. I always say I have to try the other restaurants around but always end up coming here since I love the food. Be aware however that the pisco sour sign is just for show, they do not serve alcohol at this establishment. Also be sure to try the chicha, its not too sweet which is just the way it should be.
Hidden gem, I loved it! Very tasty and hearty portioned peruvian food, especially ceviche and chicha morada were very refreshing on a hot summer day. I was pleasantly surprised, as opposed to many NYC peruvian restaurants with much higher ratings where I used to be very disappointed with my food that was overpriced and not very peruvian in taste. I will definitely come back here!
Poor service in order taking for delivery. Bad attention from the cashier or the person taking the order. It took an hour and fifteen minutes to deliver when reviewing the order. It did not bring cutlery or napkins and the food was completely scrambled. Pitifully bad experience.
Went there for takeout and decided I wanted to stay. The waitress offered me a seat close to the door where it was cold because front door was open. She claimed that the empty tables(At least 4) in the back were reserved. Im ok with that , but what about the tables that emptied out while I was waiting? When I asked the hostess if those were reserved too she proceeded to speak to the waitress in Spanish and they both just stood there looking at me. I told them not to worry, I would never be back in their establishment and I would be sure to let my friends and co-workers know. I can get great Peruvian food at home in Miami.
I am not Peruvian, but my wife is and we were both very excited to eat some good Peruvian food. Ive been in Peru many times and I love the cuisine. Anticucho corazon is one of my favorites, so I ordered it as appetizer. I was very disappointed when I realized there is no smoky flavor in it at all - thats always the best part! Even the marinade tasted kind of funny, too sour. My wife ordered chicken, which was just ok, but again, no smoky flavor at all. We asked if this is the traditional Pollo a la brasa and the waitress said yes. But I dont believe any of the food is grilled on the charcoals. My main course was ceviche de pescado, which was also only ok, I had to add a lot of lime and pepper to add proper flavor. The owners are Peruvians, but it seems theyve been out of Peru for too long and they forgot how their national dishes suppose to taste like. Big disappointment for us.
Delivery took over 2 hours to arrive on a Sunday evening. I had to call the restaurant 4 times (got hung up on once) and each time they gave me the generic it will arrive in 10-15 more minutes. On the last called they said the food wont be cold because we changed it.
With Peruvian food its all about the chicken for me. So of course, I ordered a quarter chicken meal that came with rice and beans. After a short wait by the cramped front area, my order came out missing utensils in the bag. The chicken was almost flavorless and the skin was not even browned. The rice and beans were watery, probably from whatever liquid the beans had been sitting in. It did come with a green sauce thats a bit spicy and I ended using all of it for my food because there wasnt much flavor elsewhere. The presentation was poor as well. Each container looked as if the food was sloppily thrown in there.I stopped by this place out of convenience but I wont be stopping by here again even if it is a convenience.
Food is nice here, prices are very affordable and the taste of almost everything is almost authentic and Im very particular with peruvian food so I think they deserve a good rate, the ambience I think it could change a little bit, but besides this, we had a good time. They have happy hours from 4 to 7 Monday to Friday!!
HORRIBLE ! We were attending an event at Jacob Javits center and when finished we decided to get something to eat. A friend located Rico Chelsea Peruvian @ 409 8th Avenue, which was walking distance from the javist center. Being of Peruvian ethnicity I normally go to queens to indulge in Peruvian cuisine but since google gave it a good rating we figured we try it out. Upon arrival we noticed the empty tables dirty and the floor in desperate need of a sweeping. We ordered ceviche and were overwhelmed with the high content of salt. We asked for the ceviche to be cleared from the table and I ordered cau cau, which is beef tripe stew. The waitress brought a seafood cau cau and once again overwhelmed by salt. I couldnt take the taste anymore and asked for the food to be cleared from the table. Peruvian cuisine is known for it flavorful spices and minimal salt. I apologize to anyone who feels this place serves authentic cooking and I encourage you to take a trip to queens , where you will find authentic peruvian cuisine.
The food in this place is the best I have been able to consume in recent times, it is authentic Peruvian food, in addition to its very rich food, the great quality of the staff of this place that makes diners feel at home, Especially Jhonnatan or Jhohnny which receives the diners with a permanent smile, being always available to help the diners. Thanks guys.
BEWARE of this location!!!!! DISRESPECTFUL staff!!!!! Perfect example of how a bad service can ruin a meal. The staff urgently needs to be train on how todeal efficiently with customers. The staff is creating detractors and it is very sad because the product they make is very good.
At 1st the food was good and the prices were reasonable (that was 1yr ago) now RIKO jacked up the prices and the food is not at all good. The woman (dyed blonde la rubia loca)is pretty ditzy and annoying when she takes your order for takeout. I stopped going there cause itβs NOT WORTH the money (really folks)or the aggravation!
Food is not bad. But delivery is way too slow. It took 2 hours for them to deliver, and whats quite annoying is that when you call, they keep telling you that the delivery guy is out and will be there very soon - for three times. If you cant deliver fast or dont know what is happening, at least be honest.
I have to give them 1 star because of the lΓΊcuma Ice cream thats very hard to find anywhere else unless you go to Pio Pio but other than that, I didnt enjoy the food at all. As a Peruvian, I know how real Peruvian food tastes like and this is an insult to the Peruvian Cuisine. Also, their bathroom is so dirty, like extremely dirty. If you dont believe me, just use the bathroom before ordering anything. Its affordable, yes, very cheap so you really get what you pay for.
Thats a staple for me, but anybody looking for Peruvian food in the city has to try Riko. Waiting staff is very friendly and food is really tasty. Quinoa chaufa is a must try, their ceviches are so fresh (special shout out for the mango ceviche) chicken rotisserie is always moist and super yummy... Stop reading and go, youll like it.
We ordered pick-up, when we got back the the office our sides were missing. We spent 30 minutes trying to call but could not get through. This really sucks as this is our offices go to spot for lunch. NOT ANYMORE. They are not organized the staff at the front are always confused and have little patience.

2021-02-26Itβs a cozy place with good food that comes in large portions. The seafood and rotisserie chicken are especially worthy of trying. For an affordable price, the ceviche is fresh and delicious. The spaghetti was enjoyable, but I wished I ordered something different and more specialized.

2019-06-08Beginning with the food, its a great yummy experience, the portions are good. The place is cozy, better to make reservations in advance because it roughly 35 people get inside the restaurant. Two waitresses handle all the place very well and I think its enough for the size of the restaurant. Nice environment, friendly people, average waiting time for the food and its not so expensive. The prices are reasonable. Try the Leche de Tigre ceviche, its the traditional one π

2018-09-30Pollo a la Brasa was great... my wifes parents were visiting from Lima Peru and said the food flavors were very close to what they have at home. I ordered the Pollo a la Brasa and it tasted almost exactly the same as when I had it in Peru -they have the sauces too. My 9 year son had a chopped up hot dog and french fries..thats what he wanted. Ive posted a photo. We ordered the chicha morada and it was good but not homemade. They served in wine glasses with fruit - nice. I ordered a red sangria. Didnt realize they put brandy in it - whoa. Note this is a small causal place with good prices.I recommend.

2019-09-19The food was really good but towards the end we had to leave quickly so we let the waiter know and it took them 10 minutes for us to get out. Turns out they were talking in the back and had forgotten about us and it was the manager who had to help us at the end.

2017-07-22Like other Latin restaurants, ambiance is great. Very tight space and crowded. Very big menu! Their ceviche seems great but couldnt try. Their BBQ chicken was well-seasoned and pretty tasty. Beans were yummy.

2018-07-27The Arroz Chaufa de Pollo and Chicha Morada tasted better than I expected! And the earlier you get there, the better b/c I had the last of the Lucuma Ice Cream for the day!

2016-07-10They claim that they have the best rotissery chicken in the city, and I think they might actually do! Very good stuff at affordable prices. Weve gone here at night when it was BYOB, but I think they changed their policy...

2019-06-26Love this spot, the rotisserie is first-class, the homemade Peruvian green sauce and garlic sauce are nice. Great service, conveniently across from MSG
