What a fabulous experience we had at this restaurant last Saturday. We were a large party (26) and called the day before our event, as a competitor restaurant that we planned on didn’t work out. Even though they had several large parties already, their response was “we’ll make it work for you”. From the moment we arrived the staff was more than accommodating, super friendly, and very efficient. To your entire staff, thank you for a tremendously well done job!
One Saturday In the summer my fiancé and I decided to take our motorcycle for a tour of the finger lakes, west down route 20 from Lafayette, NY. Were grateful we did with blue bird skies, picturesque Upstate New York never disappoints. We stumbled upon Rio Tamatlan after an hour or so into our trip, we were ready to feast. This place must be good as there were no tables available, due to maxed reservations. We found two bar stools and figured the food would be worth it. Chic Mexican style vibes, we were looking forward with what was going to ensue. We ordered guacamole and ceviché to start. The guacamole wasnt worth the 9 dollars, small portion and not enough salt and lime. I like my Guacamole to have flavor, unfortunately they were fresh out of Ceviche so we couldnt enjoy that, it sounded good though. For our entrees I went with the Mole Poblano, my fiancé chose the Pollo En Chipotle. The mole Poblano was rich, tender and everything promised with undertones of chocolate - complimented with delicious white rice. The pollo en chipotle was delicious too, unfortunately much spicier than advertised, our bartender recommended some cremé to cut the spice and that seemed to do the trick. After a long motorcycle ride or day on the lake I can assure you that you will not be disappointed if you visit this joint. Price was fair, entrees were satisfying, flavorful and more than enough food. Dont waste your time and energy on the guacamole though, enjoy a margarita instead.
We went for my nieces birthday there was 5 of us. We had 2 appetizers and everyone ordered a dish. The menu is confusing for people not firmillar with Spanish food. But the service was great the food was great the bill was like $100. Nice time I will definitely visit again.
I used to love this place when i first found it. But now a lot of the dishes are just OVERLOADED WITH ONION! I love onion ALOT, maybe even more than most people…but wow have they over done it with the onion in absolutely every dish. If they backed off on it I’d be back to 5 stars again, but once it’s in the dish it’s hard to get the Raw onion flavor out. Someone is being way too heavy handed with it unfortunately.
Rio Tomatlan was surprisingly amazing! I love the convenient parking lot in the back and the decor was super cute. The menu looked a little more upscale than most Mexican food too. They had a special of burria quesadilla that was excellent. I got the tequila shrimp which they were able to do dairy free. It was amazing! The sauce was so unique and fresh and was a reasonable price for the amount of shrimp they give you. The rice was a bit undercooked. The waitress was also super helpful and good about allergies. The guac has sour cream in it, but she offered to make special guac that was dairy free. The guac was also super unique and came with spicy pumpkin seeds and chili crisp. We will definitely be back!
Truly amazing place. The best pacific food (mexican) I have ever had in New York. I used to live in southern California and this is just as good as anything out there. The flan was a great finish. The service was friendly and fast. Oh and the tequila bar was awesome.Came back for lunch today and it was just as good. Smaller menu but same great food and drinks. Oh and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
I ordered takeout from here and it was AMAZING. We had the queso fundido, enchiladas verdes and machete quesadilla and it was all really fresh and also delicious and cheesy. Also the man who took my order and the man who rung me out tonight were both very nice so that was a nice touch. I live in Rochester but will be back soon!
Great Service and Delicious eats in Canandaigua, NY1)Vallarta el Mojo - Shrimp Sautéed in garlic butter with a hint fresh squeezed oranges with cabbage and pico de gallo.2) Jalisco a La Diablo - Shrimp Sautéed with tomatoes and chile de arbol sauce with cabbage and pico de gallo.3)Chocolate Flan
A very cool restaurant, loved the ambiance, the paintings and general vibe. Food was good but not great. I love guacamole and the guac was interesting with pickled onions and a little spice but overall not my favorite. My meal was okay, very plain. The beef was great though. If you are deciding between proteins, definitely get the beef its the best thing.
My favorite Mexican restaurant in the Rochester region and worth the drive to Canandaigua. There are three, nicely decorated dining areas inside and a large, comfortable deck out back... Even better as its not on a main street or by the large parking lot so no street noise. There is usually a wait on weekends but that is offset by a great bar area and lots of comfortable seating in the waiting area.On our latest visit we had about a 15 min wait (they told us it might be 30 min.) The wait went quickly with some delicious margaritas. We were seated outside and offered more drinks and appetizers. Chips are chips but the guacamole and salsa were both house made and tasty. Our dinners were beautifully presented, generous and delicious. I had a Burro Rafael (one of my favorites) which is a twist on a burrito that might make ruin the chain Tex Mex places for you its so good! Ive never had a bad meal at Rio. Plenty of options for vegitarians as well.Service (including the hostess, bar and wait staff) were a bit befuddled but they got the job done and were all delightful... With the exception of the young man busing tables... He was not at all befuddled and was quick witted, efficient and delightful.I love Rio... Great for a quick lunch, a comfortable evening of food and drinks or a nice dinner before a concert at CMAC. Give them a try. You will not be disappointed.
The food was delicious, you cant go wrong with any of their shrimp dishes, and the mango margaritas were a must. The wait staff were very helpful and the decorations were a conversation starter. Very busy, recommend making a reservation but if you have time to enjoy your meal then this is a great place to go.
This was by far the best Mexican we have ever had. Every single dish ordered was beautiful and flavorful. Amanda and Abby were amazing staff. Our first experience here was much more than we could have ever desired. Wish I had taken Photos, but they wouldn’t have done justice anyways. Next time for sure.
The food is amazing here. Make sure to get the guacamole. For dinner I had the stuffed salman. I love all the tequilla options here. You cant go wrong with the fish tacos as they are soo very good. The only thing that i didnt really like was the soup. Great place to take your significant other and even go with your family.
It has been a while since Ive taken the time to write a review. My experience today was absolutely deserving. I came in for takeout on Saturday (8/14) and sat down at the bar. I was immediately greeted by Will. He informed he would be right with me. His coworker, politely greeted me just after and said she would be right with me.Will presented food and drink menus to me and made me a terrific margarita. He educated me on all the ingredients to explain why it was so good. Patron limon tequila, fresh lime juice, Gran Marnier, etc. Will then took the time to educate me on the menu items. Without question he grabbed me a sample of pickled onions (you have to try these) while raving about them himself. He answered several other questions I had about the menu as well. I love when servers take the time to educate and talk about the food and drink. It shows they really care which sells it!We got to chat a bit about past restaurant experiences while I waited for my food. I immediately felt like a welcome guest. I noticed everyone else he and the happy female other bartender seemed to feel super welcome as well.I had another great interaction when I was leaving with my food. Erin took the time, during what was becoming a very busy early evening rush, to talk with me as well.My wife and I enjoyed everything we ate from the Mole Enchiladas, to the guacamole, the Huarache, and the Tacos y Burritos. The flavors are authentic. Seasonings were just right and the spicy kick was just enough. I cant wait to come back and dine in. I imagine the experience will be even better!Thank you :)
Very good food. The wait on Labor Day Sunday was 1 hr and 15 minutes. Crazy! Food arrived in less than 15 minutes. Staff were friendly and professional. Decor is really awesome- very Mexi-eclectic. If thats not a thing, it should be. Highly recommend the following on menu: Salsa, Guacamole and chipsChile RellenosFlauttas de PolloBurro RafaelChicken ChalupaHighly recommend.
The fabric of the furniture is stained, and dirty. They have this ceiling lights so bright and intense that bother your eyes. You feel like being in a dentist chair, you know when the dentist aim to you the light ! . The food is .........😞Its messy, but Americans eat anything that has tortillas and beans and they call it Mexican food. I ordered pozole with green sauce and they brought me red sauce. the menu said clearly red and green. But the waitress said they only served red, when I told her that the menu said: red and green, she did not seem to mind
The strangest thing Ive had happened to me in a restaurant just happened here. Place an online order and walked in to pick it up. I could see the hostess in a reflection on a glass door bring it to the front of the kitchen and set it on the counter. She then proceeded to seat customers and do other things for 10 minutes. After making me wait for absolutely no reason she finally brought me my food. Thanks for letting my food get colder.
Terrible customer service. Their hostess should be fired for how she talks to customers. They did not give us several of our entrees and had missing items in a large order, which I can sort of understand. The inexcusable part is how they refuse to listen to what happened and correct the mistake. Taking money for goods/services not rendered is theft.
Fantastic! So great to have you guys back. We’ve frequented rio for many years, and just before covid it was a bit off. But now, i can honestly say it’s back and better than ever! Everything was so flavorful, fresh and spiced just right. Staff was on point and very professional. Please , everyone be patient in these new times, and please TIP! The staff is going to great lengths to provide you with fantastic food. Thank you all so much for a great dinner! See you soon!
Dropped in for dinner, no seating only reservations. But we asked if we could sit at the bar and order food. They said sure. So we did. Margaritas were outstanding. The tostada I had was not. Shrimp was extra, but you hardly got any. All cabbage, no beans like recipe says. So we were disappointed with the food. Service was slow too, they are very short of help.
Have always loved this restaurant. Best Mexican food anywhere in Finger Lakes region. Unique food, unique vibe.I usually get the pollo en chipotle, but this time branched out and wasnt disappointed. The pozole soup was absolutely incredible - maybe the best soup Ive ever put in my mouth!
We finally made it back to Rio Tamaltan after 3 years. I had such good memories of this place and the food. The server was super nice and helpful but forgot utensils and forks. Not really big deal but then the quacamole came out and it was delicious. Except none of us had plates and the server was MIA. We made do and passed the plate and chips around the table of six and everyone loved it. Then the waiting began. We arrived at 6 and had ordered by 6:15. Our food did not arrive until 7:20. When it arrived we still did not have utensils and had to wait an additional 5 minutes to get some out to the table. Also the entrees were mislabeled by the food runners resulting in 2 people getting the wrong dish. Also not a big deal but compounded with the long wait and one of the individuals absolutely shredded the other persons meal. The individuals with the mixed up dishes were not happy. The food itself was uneven in terms of quality. My enchiladas were very good and the salmon tacos were delicious as well. Everyone else wasnt completely happy with their dishes but nothing was bad. It is interesting how a dining experience can be ruined from lack of attention and slow food service. Afterwards my wife and I agreed that bringing out a basket of chips during the long wait would have been enough to keep people happy at the table. I chose the restaurant based on my past experience and spent the car ride back to Rochester apologizing to my guests for a frustrating dining experience. It is really unfortunate because we wanted to have a go to Mexican place but ended up with an experience that will leave us hard pressed to go back.
Food was amazing as always the issue seems to be the same as the rest of the world they were a bit understaffed or so it seemed so our waitress was without a runner, and didnt realize it so everything just took significantly longer to get to us. Still love this restaurant and will continue to go there would just remind the staff if they dont have something so they arent telling us why chips and salsa took 35 mins to be brought to our table.
We were excited to check out this restaurant. It was recommended by a shop keeper in the Buffalo area as we were headed to a vacation in the Finger Lakes.Since it is the high season, we made a reservation. Despite making the reservation, we were seated at possibly the worst table, in the back near the bathrooms. While we were served guacamole quickly, our entrees were brought 70 minutes after ordering. After we pointed this out to our server, she blamed it on the patio and a limited kitchen staff. The worst part was the food. The pozole was too salty to eat. My husband had a single sip. Posole is one of his favorite Mexican dishes and he was really disappointed. I had the taco & burrito plate with carnitas and I found the pork too salty as well. I tried our son’s rice that he had with his taco and it was too salty as well.It might have been an off night, but I suspect that this is not the case and cannot recommend this restaurant.
4 stars for the food/setting but I have to go with 2 when factoring in service. Our entrees took forever to come out on what didnt appear to be a very busy night. That wouldnt have been a problem if they hadnt also arrived lukewarm--I can only assume that was a server issue and they had been sitting plated and ready to go for too long. We never received our appetizer until mentioning it again to the server; it then arrived about 10 minutes after our entrees.Im not sure if we just caught them on an off night but, from our one experience of Rio Tomatlan, its hard to recommend the restaurant in its current state.
Last 3 times food has taken incredibly long to come out, and is always closed. Most recent experience the “hostess” stood talking to 2 dudes at the bar for the first 5 minutes before walking off without approaching me, then a kitchen staff came and helped me but the food took 20 minutes over the told takeout time before it came out. While I waited I listened to the bartender tell stories about her taking acid, mushrooms, and a variety of other drugs. Drastic decline from what Rio was 2 years ago.
Best Mexican food in the Rochester area. The mole was wonderfully smoky and rich. We also had a nice creamy pollo chipotle. Except for the samon ceviche (not my favorite) everything was tasty and good mood inducing :). The atmosphere is nice too. The inside design is creative. This time we sat outside with view on the little garden they have. On a nice summer day come early and go for a walk on the pier later (2 mins by car from Tomatlan).Update 5/17/22: still great. New inheritor design (less wild but still nice). Menu mostly the same, food tasty as ever, cocktails (mezcal authentica) strong and well balanced.
We dined on a Thursday night. It was my first time there. We had heard that Rio Tomatlan provided faster service than our favorite Mexican restaurant, El Rincon, but we did not find that to be true. It was slow. This restaurant does serve margaritas which is a plus. Food was good and authentic but El Rincon is still better.
WORST SERVICE!!!! Reservations made for 630 waited 30min for drinks waited another 30mi For waitress to take our dinner order. Did not get appetizers correct or on time. Waitress was rude. NOT HAPPY. WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR FOOD!!!! Food finally showed up 40min later. Started at 630pm finished at 9pm, does this sound like a great night to to you!!! H*LL NO!0 DOLLARS FOR TIP.....THE WORST!!!!
07/30/2020 This is truly authentic Mexican food. Absolutely delicious. We ordered 8 entrees for take out. Everyone loved them. So why only 4 stars. 3 of the entrees had jumbo shrimp which were delicious. At $22 each this was relatively inexpensive. For an extra 1 to 3 dollars more they should have been peeled (shelled). It was very messy.
Nice staff but the service was really slow. Took a little bit before our server came. At least 15 minutes if not more to get our drinks. And, about 40 minutes or more to get our food from the time we ordered it. My wife had salmon tacos, which were overcooked as were my quesadillas. At least they comped us on the tacos and the drinks were good. We were so looking forward to some great Mexican food but were sorely disappointed.
Terrible evening. We went out for our 25th wedding anniversary dinner, stood at the receptionist desk for 5 min before anyone cane to seat us. Our appetizer came out 20 seconds before our entrees after a long wait. We ordered a pitcher of margaritas and the waitress brought us a half pitcher for which we were then charged $36! When we complained/inquired about the price, after 5 minutes someone came over and tried to explain their way out of it. Them she left and said she look into adjusting the price but then nevlber came back. The food was actually very good, but the service ruined our night and they werent even busy (Tuesday at 5 pm).
Ignored by poorly trained staff, frustrated by confusing signage. The food has steadily drifted, over several years of eating here, from being fresh and authentic, to bland and heartless. Maybe the customers don’t deserve better, maybe the owners lost courage. Won’t be returning.
If i could give a zero. we waited PATIENTLY for our order for like 50 mins we understood cos they said they were understaffed that day. When we followed up for our order turns out our order was never put in. Being understaffed, we’d probably wait another hour or so for our food to be served. So we left. Mind you it was lunch and we were VERY HUNGRY. Most disappointing dining experience ever.
Stopped by for a meal and some margaritas. While outside eating, and waiting for the margaritas, I walked into the bar and asked if I could pick up the margaritas instead of having the waitress bring them out. There was an elderly gentleman named Gus there, who noticed that I came in instead of waiting outside for the drinks. He asked me if I wanted to do a shot with him. It was my pleasure! A drink on Gus and some nice conversation. Kusse told me his son owns the restaurant. And that’s the way it should be, a nice man, offering up a drink on the house, keeping the customer experience worthwhile. That’s wisdom! The rest of the staff were very friendly as well. Highly recommended, as I have been there in the past when CMAC used to have concerts. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Visiting from Pa. Have been here in the past. Waitress Lily was wonderful. Pleasant and accommodating. Clearly they were short staffed. Owner should have been there helping. Food was cold not waitresses fault. in the past it was great. Clearly has gone down hill. Wont go back again!
We were seated in a cramped dining area, it was loud, the food was okay but I thought it was pretty plain for Mexican food. Our waitress took our order but that was it. We ordered chips and didnt get them, a table who sat a bit after we ordered got their chips immediately after ordering them. A different person had to check on us and if we ordered, then brought us room temp food and our chips. If the service was better I would visit again.
My husband and I have dined here on several occasions and it is always a pleasure. We order a round of authentic margaritas with chips and salsa/guacamole to start. I usually order some sort of fish tacos and have never been disappointed. My husband usually orders one of the many combo platters available. The portions are large enough to have leftovers for the next day. The service is friendly and accommodating. I can’t wait to go back!
The best Mexican food Ive had in a very long time. Good was amazing. Flavors balanced the way they needed to. Portions were big but not too big. Didnt need an appetizer. Server was a bit slow and off putting. She did not seem to have much personality and desire to be there.
Food was great, and best of all, Lizzie was our waitress and she was fantastic! Smiling, friendly, explained the menu and very seasoned in her role as a server! Weve been many times because we love Mexican, but finally the server was fantastic. Thank you for a relaxing, awesome dining experience Lizzie!
Meh. This is the second time we’ve been here in about two and a half years. The first time it was okay. Today was not great. My whole family thought the food was bland and unexciting. The burrito had too many beans and needed a sauce. The mole enchiladas were okay but needed salt and sour cream. The chips and pico were not good, bland and boring. We’ll save our money for another restaurant when we are in town from now on.
If youre looking for truly authentic Mexican, this is the place. Huge portions, reasonable prices, and delicious food. Sangria was great and flavorful. I wish they had more of a craft beer selection - but theres a ton of Mexican beers on the menu so youll find something solid to sip on. Our waitress, Amy, was phenomenal to boot. Would come again!
The worst dining experience I have ever had.We made reservations two weeks in advance for a party of 10. We knew with covid that we would probably have a bit longer of a wait than precovid and were all completely fine with that. Our reservations were for 6:30 and we didn’t get seated until almost 7. We let it go. We ordered drinks from the bar as soon as we sat down and didn’t get the drink until well after 7:30, if not closer to 7:45/8:00pm. Again, we were letting it go. Our food arrived, some orders not correct and most of the orders cold. By this time it was past 8:00 and we were starving so we just wanted to eat, and frankly just leave. Two people ordered one more drink when our food arrived which didn’t arrive until we had paid the bill and were getting ready to stand up to leave. Prior to that, our waitress came over with separate checks for our table (which we thanked her for doing multiple times) and she gave us a few pens and said since she doesn’t write things down if she messed anything up to just write it on the bill and she will fix it when she swipes our cards. All the bills were accurate except for mine which charged us for 3 drinks instead of 1. I kindly wrote that down and mentioned it to her when she came back around. When I went to point it out she said that’s not possible because the amount of drinks she charged us all for was correct so we just must be paying for someone else’s drinks. No big deal, I will gladly cover that and we can work it out ourselves - except we had already gone through the bills and this was a clear over charge. We only ordered 11 drinks as a table and all 11 drinks were accounted for - plus the two extra we were being charged. The waitress still fought with us to which we spoke up and said we will just pay for it as we had been there over 2.5 hours by then and just wanted to leave. She then ripped the bill from my hands saying she just won’t charge us for “what we drank”. If the drinks weren’t $10+ and we weren’t billed for gratuity on top of that, I wouldn’t have said anything to begin with. This girl was clearly being over worked and I planned to tip her very well. After ripping the bill from my hands we could see her talking to another waitress and pointing to our table - clearly complaining about us. And when she came back to our table with the bills, she said absolutely nothing and walked off. Then to our lovely surprise, we were still charged for the drinks. We paid about $23 more for dinner for just my husband and I, then we should have.Long story short, you’ll wait forever, have an extremely rude waitress and staff, be completely overcharged and yelled at when you bring up the mistake.I am all for supporting small businesses right now, but I wouldn’t suggest to my worst enemy to go and have dinner there anytime soon.
Its a cute restaurant and the food tasted good. I went with a party of 8, and the service was not good. We waited almost an hour between ordering and getting our food, and by then some of it was cold. When we talked to the staff about it they had a lot of excuses (including informing us that at that point it had only been 45 minutes) but didnt do much to make it right.
We had a wonderful lunch. Our service was excellent. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients which are used in authentic Mexican cuisine. The cocinero (chef) came to our table after we told our server that the presentation and the flavor of the food and the molé sauce in particular were perfect. After visiting many of the Mexican restaurants in western New York this is easily our choice for the best.
Went to celebrate mothers day and it was great. Food drinks atmosphere. Only two issues the music was to loud if you were any where near the gentleman playing the guitar, made it difficult to have a conversation. The second was our server she was very short with information and we felt rushed. We asked for the owner since he is a personal friend of the family and she was reluctant to do so. Hope to have a more pleasant experience in the future. Please help your servers realize that this is a service oriented industry and no one deserves to feel rushed or uncomfortable when out with family to enjoy a meal.
We went on a Saturday afternoon and although there was no wait to be seated, we waited quite a long time to be served. We all ordered something different and while it was tasty, the portions were skimpy for the cost of $52.00 for 2 with NO DRINKS!!! We were there years ago and the portions were plentiful and delicious. This time it was a huge disappointment and I would not go there again. If you are a small eater then it is well worth the visit because, like I said, the meal was tasty. It just was not enough for the cost and no chips were given at the beginning of the meal!! What’s up with THAT??? Chips are cheap!!!!
This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Canandaguia!! Took me a long time to find some Mexican food that tastes as good as the Mexican food in Texas!! Their refried beans are absolute heaven! I come here very often! They have Vegan options also which is great! I always get the Burro Rafael because its just SO UNBELIEVABLY delicious! Everyone is so nice and funny here, and the atmosphere/vibe is so calming and fun! I think the only negative thing is they sometimes put cheese on my beans when I ask them not to, but other than that, this place is a 10/10!!!
Our appetizer, I cant remember the name, was delicious. It consisted of four mini tacos with great flavor. My wife wanted something spicy for her entree, and we ordered one with the spicy designation next to it on the menu. It was very delicious, but not very spicy. The service was above par, very helpful and accommodating. The margaritas were spot on. The bar crowd however, was quite eclectic. Not loud or intimidating, but just uncomfortable.
Went back to Rio immediately after they reinstated there lunchtime hours since Covid and their food and service didn’t miss a beat! If there was the option of 6 stars ⭐️, it would certainly be! I always get the guacamole and chips to start off with, and usually get the burrito with chipotle chicken for my meal. The level of freshness and delicacy of the vegetables and overall food, leaves you completely satisfied and full every time!
Food was pretty good, guac very good. Had reservations, but still waited 15+ minutes. Service was good, not great. Was like that another time I went. And it was already loud enough, but then there was sudden bursts of stomping. Had a flamingo dance demo upstairs. Since we really couldnt talk over the noise, we spent dinner wondering if the ceiling was coming down. Id go again, but prob on a off night.**Extra star for responding
Great food! First visit and all 4 of us really enjoyed our meals. Its a large restaurant, but it was packed so Im thinking a lot of other people agreed with us. Portions are generous and the wait-staff are friendly. Well definitely come back. Try the natural margarita!
My meal was amazing. The waitress we had was anything but amazing. It was our first time at the restaurant and she was very cold and not into her job at all.We dident even get to order untill 38 minutes after being sat down.We had a party of 8. I think it would be a good place for just me and my wife. The Tequila selection was superb!
Visiting the area for a weekend getaway...the food here...tostadas with beef (super flavorful) and the margaritas were DELICIOUS! MY hubby enjoyed the tamales and sopa with pork very much! Our server was very good and the restaurant was clean with a fun atmosphere. We will be back!
We had a GREAT time at Rio! Their classic margarita is exactly what Im always looking for - lime juice, tequila, triple sec, ice and salt. Thats all you need and they have a perfect one. The food was great. I had a chicken mole. If I see mole on the menu, I go for it. Its a tough sauce to make so if they have it I always try it. Theirs was really great. It was rich and creamy with a hint of sweet. Service was great and we had a party of 12.
If you are concerned with Covid-19 safety I am sorry to say that the staff here did an absolutely terrible job with mask wearing (Servers and Bartenders). Service time seems to still be an issue worsened more by Covid, we, two people w/ reservation on a Thursday night, waited at our table 15 minutes before I went to the bar to ask for a menu. Staff is super friendly though When you talk to them and food is Five star worthy.
Very impressive menu. I ordered the full size pazole. Huge bowl... Could only eat half. Exceptional flavor and very authentic. Great atmosphere and reasonable prices. However, 2 stars for take out. I ordered 3 meals to take home, asked for rice and beans wth all meals but was disappointed when I got home to find they didnt give me any. Also asked for all sauces on the side since I had an hour long drive. They only gave me 2oz cups of sauce with each meal which wasnt enough and the sauces were crucial to each dish.
Food was quite favorable... Everyone in my party cleaned their plate. Lively atmosphere for an early Sunday afternoon meal. Place needs a new floor, at least in some places. Sat in center area, and felt like a minor earthquake every time someone walked by...nothing crazy, just annoying
Total surprise at this place. First of all the atmosphere is awesome here. Secondly, I am a vegan but I dont like to advertise it when I go out, so I just order without animal products but dont explain why. Our excellent server picked up on it right away and made sure that everything was cooked vegan for me. Thats what I call a quality employee! I cant rember her name but she was awesome. The food was incredible and from my understanding very authentic as well. I got the enchiladas and wasnt even slightly disappointed. You get a ton of food here too. Also, the homemade tortilla chips were awesome, but sadly guac is an extra charge. I will definitely be back here.
Had a relatively early meal...about 5 pm. Service was excellent and the food was prepared perfectly, with a Rio Tomatlan flair. Although getting busy, the seating allowed ample room between tables, which created an intimate space. The lighting during the day was natural and the sunny day provided rays of light, streaming through the tall windows. The walls were covered with art, including many paintings, giving the ambiance authenticity. We had a great time.
Its a Mexican restaurant Im not talkin about Taco Bell. It is an authentic Mexican restaurant. The food is phenomenal. They have a large bar with all kinds of tequila. The place is very crowded and thats how youll know that its really good. The atmosphere is friendly and fun-loving. When I want to go out and treat myself well this is where I go.
First time but definitely not the last! I’ve had coworkers rave about the food and my husband and I finally got the chance to go today. We ordered 2 combination meals so we could try a variety, in addition to a shared appetizer and dessert. Very fresh, authentic and great service too boot, we highly recommend!
Service was lacking. The hostess was very polite. But our server changed her tune when we didnt order alcohol. She seemed uninterested in our table after that. The place was pretty quiet on a Tuesday night youd think she would at least fake it to make a good tip. The food was ok, nothing to write home about. My family will go elsewhere.
This is easily the best authentic Mexican restaurant in Central/Western NY. I live in Rochester and my mom drives all the way from Ithaca just to meet me there, its really worth the drive! Everything is super fresh, the ambiance is lovely, and the food is consistently good. Definitely not to be missed!
Incredible food and service. I called in an order of tamales. When I got there to pick it up the apologized IMMENSELY that they had run out the night before. They offered me anything else on the menu free along with anything else I wanted. Very gracious to both the young lady’s who provided an amazing service. It’s never soon enough to make my way back there for a meal. Keep up the incredible work!
The food was good, but overall the experience was just okay. Not what I totally expected in going out for Mexican food. I order an enchilada and I recieved the ingredients of the enchilada served on top of 2 soggy tortillas. The chicken in it was tasty, but again it wasnt an enchilada. We ordered an appetizer of guacamole which my whole family enjoyed. The staff overall was just okay. Not overly friendlty.
Food delicious and not typical fat-laden Mexican. Decor is unique and arty and depicts many sides of Mexican folk art. They accommodated a party of 13 and were patient with the changes I made to party size, down from 20. I asked in advance for them to make a dish that is only on their foodtruck- Mexican Street Corn, and they had it all ready for us.Highly recommend. Even my 89 and 90 year old parents loved it.
The food is genuine and the attention to detail is in the flavor. I had the mole poblano with rich flavor, and I will try their tamales soon, to which its unfortunately hard to find these dishes in this region. It is decorative in the restaurant and the murals make it a relaxing atmosphere. The service was thorough and kind under a high volume situation.
Worth the wait. We went on a Saturday night arriving at about 6:15. Wait was about 45 minutes, but the food was so good that it was definitely worth it. Guacamole was house made and all of our meals were delicious. I had the tacos de tilapia, which were fabulous. They offer local craft beer on one tap, otherwise mostly Mexican beer.
There has not been a single one out of many meals weve enjoyed at Rio when weve not been happy. Our most recent visit was to celebrate my daughters 21 st Birthday. Although the food was, as always, outstanding, the service had a lot to be desired. We waited over 15 minutes to get our drinks, and another 30 for appetizers. This was not a weekend, it was a Wednesday... Perhaps the waitress was new, Im not sure. I hope this is an isolated incident and not something we will experience again.
Waitress was rude, we had to seat ourselves because the hostess was not available for a long period of time. The waitress knowing this had an attitude!! Will never go there again. Food was okay at best. Portion sizes were ok,Atmosphere was okay. Very crowded at dinner-timetime hour. The staff looked to be overwhelmed and frustrated.
Sat at the bar for a half hour waiting to be seated, and we were told we were forgot about, on a not busy Thursday evening. The table we were then pointed had been open the whole time. We were looking forward to my fiance getting her Masters, but that never happened. Show, lazy and inattentive.
Favorite restaurant! Rio has the best margaritas, quick service, friendly staff, delicious food, occasional live music and tons of art on the walls! They even do bingo once a week and they encourage you to reserve your spot because it gets so busy! I highly recommend dining here. Ive never had a bad experience, and go at least once a month!
An amazing Mexican restaurant right in downtown Canandaigua! I didnt even realize this restaurant existed, but I found the atmosphere to be very unique, the servers to be incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and the food was delicious. They also had a large variety of hot sauces to try, which was a big plus! Im not sure about there alcoholic beverages, or their bar... But I would definitely say the restaurant itself is kid friendly and quite the experience! Im especially fond of the artwork on the walls. I would highly recommend trying this restaurant.
We had the best mexican food weve ever had outside of Mexico. The whole experience was rather authentic. The chips served were just like the ones you can find in Cancun, and the guacamole was phenomenal, not your average ho-hum guacamole. There were a variety of margaritas to choose from, our group ordered two, and they were delicious!
The ingredients while obviously fresh, didnt make up for the fact that it was a stretch to call any of our dishes warm. The service also left a lot to be desired. There was no offer to refill any drinks or the water for the table, served in a small growler for multiple people. The staff never even came to check. We sat at least 10 minutes after our dishes were cleared waiting for our bill. After leaving I looked at our bill again and noticed that we were charged $3.00 for the side of beans that the menu stated came with the entree my husband ordered.
I had high hopes for this place--good ambiance, menu and service. But I found the beer a bit flat and not cold enough, and the chicken enchiladas verdes didnt have a lot of flavor and were only luke warm. The ceviche was excellent. Service was fine--its a hard working group. Live music and karaoke added a nice touch.
Cant remember the last time I paid so much for cabbage and corn. I think there was supposed to be chicken in those enchiladas and I may have broken a tooth on the flautas. Server was happy though. Pretty sure she didnt ask us how we liked our food because she already new the answer. They were busy so maybe thats an excuse.
Felt sick after eating here. I had wanted to try this restaurant for some time now. We visited on Sunday at 2:30 pm. Very few people there, however, the service and quality of food and value left much to be desired. The service was very slow and the food was not very good. We ended up paying $16 for nacho chips, guacamole and pico. The entrees arrived warm but not very tasty. Probable Will not return again.
8/13/2016 went at 6 pm with no reservations , party of 6!!Had to wait 30 minutes to be seated , sometimes the service can be a plus or minus , last nite Stephanie was awesome and the food was right on as was their top shelf margaritas!!! everyone was very pleased.......If you get the right server your in for a great time!! Tonight 3/30/2019 we had server Julie and she was spot on.Party of six again this time we came at 5 pm no wait. food was killer and the margaritas are right full of booze....you pay for what you get..... awesome place happy birthday... Julie!!!!
Food is good if you can look past a select few sour staff members. For example, last time I went, the bartender accused my boyfriend and I of sneaking in the back because she was told the front door had been locked. Not the best way to greet paying customers. Aside from that general area of the restaurant, the waiters and waitresses are great. It is still my go-to Mexican restaurant in the Finger Lakes area.
My family and I had a very bad experience. We were ready for a great meal, but we were assigned a bad server. She had a political t-shirt on that evening that was derogatory about MY/OUR President, President Trump. I never expect to visit this restaurant ever again. This is too bad. I am a veteran. I would not ever speak publicly about former President Obama like she did. There is no room for Republicans at this establishment with employees such as this.
Really the best gourmet Mexican food in the Greater Rochester Canandaigua area. The service is outstanding and theres seldom a wait. When Im at home and I want Mexican food theres no other restaurant that I can ever think of that would be remotely good. Ive been to this restaurant many many times and never had a bad meal.
I loved it there! Except last night we order my favorite meal with shrimp in a garlic butter sauce and it was terrible! Not enough butter and garlic and the rice was a little bit and it was just plain white rice!!!Very disappointed ! We allordered the same thing because we always order the same dinner! The waitress said it was the same but it ‘wasn’t! Never going again!Oh and it had a tun of onions!!So disappointed!!!
The resturant was not full as it has been on previous visits. The waitress was not attentive to our needs. I received the wrong meat without beans and rice. I told her I didnt get beans and rice and she was going to bring it but I never got it. I also never got a chance to tell her I got pork rather than chicken. I was hungry and the service was very slow I was not going to wait for the correct meal. I normally dont complain but had to write a review being a dissatisfied customer. I moved out of town and its been awhile since I have eaten at Rio. Normally a place we must go to when we come home. This will probably be our last time.
Still the single worst bartender service Ive ever seen (and Ive been to a lot of bars). I come back here when Im in town because the food is amazing, but unless you are a regular and know the bartenders...they legit ignore you. Its sad that their food, hostesses, servers and atmosphere are so amazing, but yet Im forced to give them 1 star because their bar service is so bad.Sorry I inconvenienced Trevor by sitting down at the bar and taking his focus off his friends he was talking was talking to.
Rio is an true favorite and the reviews here do justice as to why -- the food, the bar, the service, the vibe -- but I want to add that I recently worked with Hope to plan a party with a range of challenging variables. Not only was the party stellar, but Hope was a dream to work with; she went above and beyond to ensure that our needs were not only met but that our expectations were exceeded. Cant speak highly enough about this place!
Been going there for a few years. Had reservations made 3 weeks in advance. 1 waitress. There were 6 ppl ahead of us. And to my knowledge it’s reservation only at this time. Told it would be 15-20 minute wait. So, asked the manager if we should go somewhere else, and he said YES. Now, come on. I’m so disappointed in the mgmt of this place.
The food was absolutely delicious!! Loved the atmosphere, but our waitress....hate leaving a bad review for a waitress, because I worked food service for a long time. But our waitress was lazy, forgot our drinks, forgot our guacamole, never told us the lunch specials, brou bro us the check, and never asked if we wanted dessert.
Absolutely horrible service. Ordered chips and salsa never got them. And that was the first thing we ordered. Never seen our waitress or should I say she never came back to our table, until after our cold food was brought to us. Asked her where our chips and salsa was? Then ordered another drink, she brought back not what we ordered! Told her that is wrong, and all she said was so you dont want it ummm no, its not what was ordered. She clearly didnt care about what she was doing.
The waitres was drunk and forgot we were there. We are not sure of her name but she was a young blonde. I ordered the Laredo and food was disgusting and my plate was full of liquid like it was a soup. My wife said the bathroom was also in poor condition. On a positive note the tequila and mezcal selection was huge and the drinks were very strong. We wont be back unless it is to get drunk at the bar with the waitress. This was Saturday 1/25 at around 8:45 pm. We sat in the seating area across from the bar.
The food was great and the prices too. We were seated quickly and the food came out quickly. My only complaint would be the lack of kids drink choices and the fact the waitress came by twice asking about dessert. Most waitstaff know better than to do that in families with children.
My wife and I stopped by for dinner on New Years Eve. The food was outstanding and the drinks were good as well. We were both impressed with the atmosphere and enjoyed our overall experience. The only thing I could say was the fact that the staff seemed a bit tired/worn out and as though they didnt want to be there. I dont blame them, it was New Years Eve after all, but it was noticeable across the board. That said, it did not impact the quality of their service (which is why still 5 stars). They just seemed...tired. We would be back and intend on recommending it to anyone visiting Canandaigua.
I like the food at Rio and this is not my first time there. My favorite is the tres leches cake they have for dessert. I have had some rough experiences here such as sitting and waiting for our waiter for 20 minutes one time and also cold food however when its on baby its onnnnn. Our last meal was $71 with tip for my son my fiance and myself. This included desert and 2 regular priced meals and a kids meal and tip so really cant complain to much about the price. Atmosphere is amazing. They even had live music with a pretty good guitarist. Over all even with the bad experiences I have had (not many) I will give 4 stars.
Food is always fresh and delicious. Everytime! Service is always great and I love the pico and guac. My only complaint is that now on fridays and saturdays you won’t take a reservation for parties of less than 6. The wait is always anywhere between an hour to an hour and a half, so my family is going to dinner elsewhere tonight because of that policy. I feel penalized because my family is smaller. We love your food and I hope you will consider revisiting your reservation policy.
Recommended by a local artist, I thoroughly enjoyed this place. Had to wait forty-five minutes on a week night, but it was certainly worth it. Food was delicious, service was fast and staff were friendly. Atmosphere was lively and fun, and the paintings were beautiful.
Guac is $8. Its good, but its $8 for a smallish serving and the price for it is not listed on the menu- the rest of the menu is very reasonably priced. Friendly service for sure, but suuuuuper slow and long waits for everything. Great atmosphere and cool artwork but lighting is super bright and cafeteria-like in the main room with the super cool Mary piece- pretty unpleasant vibe due to the lighting; my date and I mentioned so many other places in the restaurant looked so much more intimate due to the lighting. Food was definitely good, but a bit bland- not incredible. Bottom line: good food, super long waits, cool vibe in every spot except for the bad lighting in the one main room and they serve super pricey guac.
Food is good authentic Mexican. Its over priced however and the service is horrible. It has really gone downhill. We tried one more time because the food is good and the service used to be good but low and behold orders werent right, we had to ask to order our drinks, and the staff was rude. There are other places in are with food just as good and service that is better.
Excellent food, beautiful decorating and interior, great atmosphere, slow and forgetful service. Not rude, but if youre going to tell me youre Out of Guacamole, try to remember you said you were out when you bring Guacamole to multiple tables after I asked for it. Youre lucky the Chipotle Chicken was fantastic.
Truly authentic Mexican cuisine. Always try the chefs specials when they have them. The black bean crab cake was an excellent twist on a traditional favorite! And if youre a Tequila lover, you will find the largest selection of tequila within 50 miles. Be sure to make a reservation as there is usually a wait.
It was ok. The queso fundido was not what we have had at every single other Mexican place however it had tons of flavor and was delicious. The tacos were not the same though. We go to tons of Mexican restaurants and this one is just not for us. The waitress was friendly. We called ahead to make reservations and were told that we were unable to make any and there was no wait. As soon as we walked in we were asked if we had made reservations, When we told them no they said the wait was 20 mins. The hostesses weren’t rude but not welcoming either.
Fantastic, authentic food and drink. Attended multiple times. This was the first time their seating and wait-time was less than half an hours. Typically, wait time is 45 minutes around dinner. Seating is cramped and awkward often times, but it is all worth it for the food and margaritas.
Have loved Rio for years, what happened!? Service was quick and the server was wonderful, but the food was flat tasting and bland. The beans and meat had no seasoning to them. The burritos and tacos were soaked and fell apart. This was up there with the worst meal Ive eaten.
Excellent food... Very authentic! My wife is from Guadalajara and this is her favorite Mexican restaurant in NY. We spoke with the owner who happens to be from the same state of Jalisco... He was very friendly and said that he brings in a lot of his food from Oaxaca... Very impressive... very friendly...very tasty!
This is an awesome Traditional Mexican Restaurant in the heart of Downtown Canandaigua serving Delicious & Delightful Dinners, Appetizers, Beverages (especially Margaritas) & Desserts that will take your mouth on a Tour of Mexican Cuisine. Take time to visit & enjoy all this wonderful Restaurant has to offer.
If you look around, its clear that people enjoy the culture and its fare. There were three at my table and wed all been there before; my friends are friends of the owner. The talapia taco was superb! Perfectly fried, paired with a fresh, crisp slaw and a tasty sauce with just a little heat. It came plated simply but your eyes feasted happily. The shredded Mole chicken was delicious. The plating was rustic; even so, your biggest challenge was deciding what to dive into first because of the many beautiful accompaniments. The lightly egg battered habanero pepper stuffed with cheese was an unfortunate choice. I put that down to (my not really liking peppers and) wanting something else. Fortunately, the rice and beans sprinkled with cheese was good--and the huge wedge of tres leche cake was a delightful dessert. Our waitstaff was super pleasant, really charming. Plenty of parking, of course--and prices are still reasonable. Great place for any kind of tasteful gathering.
Went for flameco show...I called when the event was announced and told that it was a community event and no reservation was needed. I showed up and was the 1st person in line. The hostess said anyone who doesnt have a reservation, there is a community table. There was a mad rush to the table. So, I didnt get to see any of the show. The bartender was very nice and helpful. Food was good but I was given bad information about the community event and then told when I went to talk to someone about it, that I should have made a reservation. Seems like such a well known restaurant could be more organized.
My favorite restaurant in Canandaigua, and a top one in the Finger Lakes. I had my usual Smokey Bandit (Smoky Tequila, Pineapple and Jalepeno) to drink, a serving of guacamole and chips, and finally, tequila shrimp. Fantastic! I also lover the enchiladas, and yet their is so much too like. Closer to classic Mexican than most places. Packed on the weekend, but if you like to eat early, or more so late, you will love this place.
This used to be my favorite place until the last time I went with a few of my girlfriends, two weeks ago. Our waitress, Katelyn, was terrible. She purposely inflated our bill by offering chips, salsa and guac to us, which one of my friends ordered. The guac is an extra charge, she failed to mention that. We ordered mojitos and she returned asking one of my friends if she wanted to try their special pomegranate mojito, which was super delicious. My friend agreed; she failed to ask the rest of us yet somehow assumed we all wanted one (we didnt) and returned with one for each of us. She would drop things off and disappear just as quickly, she was not personable or available to us and was borderline rude. The food was okay but the chicken chipotle that my friend ordered, which shes had many a time there, was dry, more like shredded chicken with a drizzle of sauce. When the bills came we found out those super delicious (they werent) drinks were much more $$ than the basic mojito. We talked with the manager on the way out and were quite put off by her defensive attitude: we were short staffed, the chicken dish looks different on any given day, etc. The adage that the customer is always right clearly doesnt apply at Rio Tomatlan. I found it most unprofessional when she ended our conversation by saying, Next time you come in, flag me down and Ill hook you up with something. One friend told her she wouldnt back and I told her I wouldnt be back for a long time, if ever. She told us she was sorry we felt that way and walked away. The more I think about what happened the more convinced I am that Ill be finding another place to eat when I go out. Sad really, because I dont eat out often but when I did, 9 times out of 10 it was so Rio. Hasta la vista.
Went for lunch. Had to wait a bit more than we should have had to for seating. Virtually every Mexican restaurant Ive been to provides complimentary chips and salsa. Not here. When we inquired we were told that they can bring chips and either pico di gallo or guacamole, but there would be a charge. We opted for the former. Chips were unsalted and the small cup of pico was absolutely tasteless. We had the house margarita that the menu surprisingly advises is made from a mix. We asked for a salted rim. The rim came unsalted and the drink was tasteless. Our entrees - the enchiladas verde and a tomale dish - were fair to good. No problem there. Service (aside from the unsalted rim) was okayish - a bit slow, but server tried to be friendly which is always appreciated. Overall, due mostly to the chips and margarita issues, I cant say Id return.
This is hands down my favorite restaurant in the Canandaigua area! Everything’s good, and every experience I have had there has been awesome! The wait is fairly quick too. Also, shout out to the woman who took my order (I believe her name is Erin) she was very kind, and had great customer service!

2022-01-18We were pleasantly surprised to find this place. The food was delicious m, and the ambience was inviting. Our only problem was they had no flan and the tres leches had booze in it. Someone in our party was alcohol free. Otherwise, we were happy.

2022-01-02Delicious and fresh Mexican food thats worth the drive! Our most recent visit was with a large party. We had reservations at 7 on a Friday night but unfortunately had to wait almost an hour to be seated. Once we sat our table ordered apps and drinks - I chose a virgin guava margarita. Being pregnant I still was craving a margarita and was happy they could accommodate. The only downside was when I received the drink I had to send it back for a new one to be made because there was lipstick all over the rim of glass that certainly wasnt mine. The staff apologized and quickly took care of it though which I was appreciative. The food definitely made up for the wait and drink mishap. We started off with the pico de Gallo, guacamole and the queso fundido which was corn tortillas with melted cheese, chorizo and pico de Gallo. They were delicious and definitely had a nice kick to them. As for entree I always love fish tacos so I chose the tilapia beer battered tacos. The fish was flaky and the tacos had cabbage, a mayo based sauce or crema and pickled onions. They hit the spot for sure and I ended up taking 2/3 of them home because I filled up on our apps (no regrets). If youre looking for authentic Mexican be sure to check this place out. Cant wait to go back for non-virgin margaritas too!

2021-08-15** I see a lot of complaints about how long it took to get served here but I think people need to take into consideration that COVID has drastically effected the staffing of most restaurants and I dont think this one is any different. Our experience was really great, our server was incredibly friendly and we appreciated her. The food was excellent in the prices were very reasonable. Will definitely come back !

2022-06-04$4 for three tablespoons of Pico de Gallo and some liquid, plus way too many chips, super greasy and all the exact same shape. Go there to pick up food and stand waiting to talk to anyone while 8 different waitresses walk by and dont acknowledge you. Its not the place it once was.

2022-03-22My friend and I had quite an adventure in the cold rain and fog while getting to this restaurant. When we got there, we almost didnt enter because we didnt see a sign. The owner spotted us wandering like stray cats and took us in. Stepping inside from the cold was like entering a fantasy land. The food was delicious and comforting. We went back the next night for a take out. The owner saw us, recognized us, and came over to speak to us. He gave us extra items, along with our order. Along with the amazing food, the restaurant and the owner made us feel warm and cared for. Please visit. It is a lovely restaurant!

2021-12-29I usually give great reviews, this place deserves one but I was expecting a more Mexican taste on my plate. That doesn’t take away how delicious my meal was, definitely an amazing take of cuisine. Would recommend.3 stars but the margarita pitchers were so good you get 4.
