Robert H. Treman State Park in other cities:
Beautiful, drop dead gorgeous scenic trails with lots of stops for breathtaking pictures. Lucifer Falls just makes you catch your breath to absorb its splendor. The trails are very challenging with lots of stair climbing. Not for the unfit unless you plan to take stops and take your time. Get there early as the trails become more crowded as the hours go by. Lots of shade to help minimize the summer heat, but don’t let that fool you. Bring lots of water and a snack can be enjoyed at many spots. Mine was right in front of Lucifer, thanks to my walking poles! Don’t forget your walking poles as they make the stair climbing easier. Fun hike alone or with your posse of friends and or family. Trails are very clean so It must mean we are doing our part to leave no trace! Stayed at the campsite in my RV. My site included electricity ( highly recommend) but more come w/o. Cabins are also provided . Nearby bathroom was cleaned often & grounds were well maintained. Overall I had a fantastic weekend.
For our next camping we stayed at a state park with 8 waterfalls in it. So it was both a place to stay and our next hike. After a quick step of the tent we set out on the trails. We started with the Gorge Trail as I could see from the map it said steep cliff steps on the Rim Trial. I figured that the gorge trail would be easier but I was wrong which was evident at the top of the first 50 or so steps that start the trail. For beauty and grandure though it was the way to go. It goes up and down along the path acending 725ft and decending 311ft with markers every ¼ mile. You walk along wooded trails, earthen bridges and wood steps up the slopes. We also come across a glen that must be inhabited by elfs or spites as it looks like a well manicured grotto with holly ground cover. Then the landscape starts to change and you feel like you step into the Lord of the Rings. The area is called Lucifer falls (We couldnt find a reason it is called that but we tried googling). There are monolithic stairs and stone bridges around and over the falls that allow you to get close enough to the falls to see individual water droplets. This has to be the best falls on the east coast!! After the finish of the trail up at the old mill we started back along the Rim Trail. From that trail you can see the other side of Lucifer falls as well as from the bottom. The rest of the Rim trail is a more standard wooded hike except for the waterfall at the end which you can go swimming by in the summer (new ideas for trips with the kids!) By the time we got back it was dark and we had hiked another 5.8 miles. Luckily we were already at our campground and were able to hit the showers (Awesome hot water!!!) And have a meat and cheese dinner before passing out from exhaustion.
The park was very nice and the camping spots were generous in size. The park was clean. Couple small gripes are there seem to be very large tall completely dead trees in camp spots that look like widowmakers. Also, the shower temperature was probably only around 83-85 degrees. I realize that this is probably common with other state parks in NY here as two others I have been to were also not warm, but it is very unsatisfying if you had a long day.
The coolest swimming spot Ive ever been to! There is a diving board in front of a beautiful waterfall that you can swim right up to. Plenty of space for swimming. It was crowded but most people were not swimming, I assume because the water can be a bit frigid. We enjoyed it and found it refreshing.
This place is a 10 mins drive from Ithaca downtown and has a beautiful waterfall. We visited this after the Buttermilk State Park and waterfall visit. The waterfall is beautiful and the main attraction was that you can get very close to the waterfall compared to buttermilk falls. This state park has its own trail but we did not get a chance to hike as it was raining when we reached. There are professional life guards monitoring so people can enjoy swimming in the water body. A very nice and a calm place to visit. Definitely recommend!
Best Waterfall and state park in ithcha. Beautiful hike with moderate difficulty. There is a lower fall and higher fall so you can either start hiking from bottom to top or from top to bottom. The swimming pool is major attraction too with nice cold water with a diving board which I think is the only one overthere.
Great park with beautiful waterfalls and trails to hike… upper and lower park , walk the top to the bottom you don’t want to miss it… sites are good only max 30 amp service, faucets to get water to your holding tanks. Roads are rough and best so drive very slow. They real need to be repaired or resurfaced. Great playgrounds for the younger kids… swimming area with the waterfalls is memorable
The Lower Falls are just beautiful and just a short walk from the parking lot on Park Rd. Then drive 3 miles to the Upper entrance to see the Mill and a waterfall behind it and then hike down to see Lucifer Falls -the Gorge trail was closed near the top of the falls, but the rim trail gives a great view of the waterfall.... worth the walk!
We came here last fall and the swimming area was closed. So we had to come back in the summer! It costs $9.00 (July 2021)... It was easy to find, easy to park, and we had fair to ok cell phone signal (definitely not 4or5g) in the main areas. Theres places and things to do for everyone. We had a blast both times.
Whats the management doing all days?We arrived at the parking lot at the Upper Falls near the Windmill. We decided to taken the rim-trial half way and get back on the George trial. Half way the George trial was closed. Back on the rim-trial with the many stairs. Logos of stairs neef reparing. There was no announcement at the start the George-trial was closed. Its a shame.Even the restrooms werd closed and no bin-trashes. But well pay the full park-amount.
We had a nice visit to the park to see the falls. No lifeguards on duty the day we were there but looks like a great place to swim right by the falls. The park is beautiful, the waterfall was calming. I saw some people in the stream fishing and putting their feet in the water. Took a drive through the campground as well and looked like some nice sites.
My wife and I were here for the weekend and this was such a Mind blowing experience - The serene jaw dropping views are to kill for. Took the Upper Parking lot --> Gorge trail and the short loop to the Rim trail for the awesome Lucifer falls view up top. The Climb is tough! No two ways about it but it is rewarding in the end.Nominal parking fees at the Entry .. the good part is that the ticket is valid through the day at any state park in the area.In our view, this hidden gem is better than the Watkins Glen experience.
Breathtaking! We parked at the upper parking and took the rim trail till it met with the gorge trail (at the bridge turn left) and headed back. Took us about an hour with lots of time for photos. The rim trail is a bit steep at times. Beautiful views of Lucifer falls! And it has a lot of stairs (but better to do those going down!). The gorge trail has fewer wooden stairs up and the rest is fairly easy going - get very close to the falls! Highly recommend!
This park is so gorgeous! And while you admire the landscape, you get a killer workout in too thanks to all the stairs! The trails are really well marked. You can see how they’re labeled in one of the pictures down below. It gives you all of the incline details and what the path copperhead will look like. I did the rim and the gorge trail. And I parked down at the lower falls. Once you walk that rim Trail up to the upper falls, you can take the gorge trail back down to the lower falls parking lot. There are facilities at both ends which is really nice and the upper falls had a vending machine too. There are not a lot of trails that kind of branch off so it’s easy to find your way. The trails are very clean and well-maintained. And all of the waterfalls and the landscape is so beautiful. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a fun place to explore! Happy hiking (:
We love this park, but the grounds need a lot or work and the bathhouse are in need of TLC. I hope when we return sometime it is in better shape. It was sad to see it this way. The ice cream truck came through. I found an old picture of ours boys with the same truck We had a fun time.
We visited the park on beautiful October day when the fall foliage colors were at their peak. I believe on such a day the trail is accessible by people of really wide spectrum of abilities. Just make sure you start from the Upper entrance. This way you can take the scenic trail descending, and if not everybody wants to repeat the trail uphill, somebody from your party can quickly return to bring the car to the lower entrance. I believe the trail was one of the best trails of the kind I visited in my life.
Beautiful state park with a lot of available campsites. The walk to the falls and swimming/diving area was easy and paved. (Swimming closed due to environmental issues) beautiful falls and photo opportunities. We actually parked outside the state area and hiked a trail (six.mile trail) under 13 and into the state park area
Well maintained, clean campground. Staff is friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were clean, thank goodness 😅. The rim path was well marked, and easy to find and also one way only (although we ran into a family with directional problems 😂). The ascents were pretty easy, steps in many places, the views were pretty amazing. We took th gorge path back, and wow, beautiful things to see. Excellent maintenance on the both paths. Lots of places to take pics,
Husband and I decided to do a over night getaway and was well worth it. We stopped at local winery for a wine slushy which taste great. Once we arrived at Treman State park we paid the entry fee and the falls were beautiful we even walked the trails and I used mustles I didnt know exsisted lol.
This state park was amazing. All the trails were ipen and they all were breathtaking, I went on Saturday 11/7/20 with my 12 year old daughter we enjoyed every inches of the park. The weather was perfect, in the 70s it was not crowded. We only paid 8 dollars for parking.
I loved this because the parking lot was close to a playground and there were many picnic tables in shaded area on way to swimming area. The swimming area had a lifeguard and was roped off into different sections the area with a diving board was 15 ft deep and you could swim over and sit underneath a little waterfall area. There were no lockers so people just found spots on the grass to put their bags or coolers or picnic blankets. There was a public restroom.
A very beautiful park, trails with easy access, but that requires a little preparation to climb the steepest points. Super positive point and that in this pandemic moment people were respecting the use of a mask and distance, unlike other parks that I visited this month. I camped in the new part that despite not having trees guaranteed me a beautiful starry sky. I will certainly return.
Comparable to Watkins Glen, but probably not as crowded. 8$ car entry fee with clean bathrooms at the parking lots. Due to covid, it is a loop trail starting at the rim trail and ending at the Gorge trail. Many small waterfalls, great views at the top and definitely a better hike than Taughanock.
If youve never been here, the trails are currently one way. I parked, walked up the short road directly to the waterfalls, and walked across the bridge to get onto a trail. The Rim Trail starts behind Cabin 9, and from that trail you can access the Gorge Trail. Some parts are a steep incline or decline, so bring good shoes and a good amount of water. Very beautiful and peaceful place, make sure you look around because a waterfall or two is just off the main trail. They offer vending machines, but they are cash only.j
This park was amazingly breathtaking. I went on saturday november 7, perfect weather. It was not crowded the trails were beautiful. FYI if you have bad knees, this may not be for you. Some areas of the trails are rigorous may be a little scary for some due to the height of the trails. I was a little scared but it was worth it. Would definitely go back. You dont have to pay to get in only for parking which is $8.00.
This is a super great place to bring the kids and your own inner kid, the driving board is super cool and the guards are very observant. There are picnic tables and lots of shade, the woodsy feel of being there is super refreshing. The water is cold but the falls are absolutely beautiful to look at. It’s a great photography place. There are some nice camp sites. If you are 62 or older and have a valid NY drivers license you can get your whole family in for free. Super great place to visit.
One of the better parks in the area. The waterfall is probably the most impressive and you can walk along the stream after the waterfall. During covid, the trails are one way. Start in the upper parking lot. If you want a shorter hike, take the gorge trail and then after lucifer falls there is a bridge that takes you to the rim trail back to the upper lot. If you want something longer, keep going down the gorge trail, it drops you off at the south lot, so then youll either have to take the rim trail back or get someone to pick you up. If youre doing the gorge trail after the fall, feel free to jump off the path and take a scenic walk along the stream
This is a beautiful park that doesnt have a long walk to see most of the falls if you park at the upper parking lot. We did the gorge trail to the upper falls and walked back down the rim trail. I prefer this way so you are walking and seeing the waterfalls straight on. The hike wasnt that difficult.
Perfect for swimming! Love this area! A lot more to the park then I thought and will have to go back. Weekdays are less crowded, but if you like people watching and crowds, weekends are for you! Its fun to see who will jump off the diving board. Lots of other parks close too, so you can park jump all day! If your looking to swim all day and relax, this is one of the spots to do it!
Our family camps A LOT around NYS, and this campground, by far, was our least favorite. We agree with the other reviews of the campground, that the electric sites are small, awkward to park and level, and the electrical boxes are too far from the camper. We had site #4, and there was literally a tree in the middle of the parking area, so we had to basically only use half of the site. Luckily, we had the local Apple Festival to attend in Ithaca. There is a very nice playground that was enjoyed by the kids in the park. That being said, the trails and waterfalls in the park are beautiful. The bathrooms were well maintained and clean. We all agreed that we would not return to this campground. It was not a horrible experience, just not as good as most for our family.Date of experience: September 2019
Here is some candid feedback about the park. Camping areas are really not that great at this park unless you like seeing your neighbors. Most of the camping areas are open to one another. There are a few that have a little privacy but not much . The newly opened camping areas don’t have photos yet but they have full sun and are basically in a field. Not my idea of camping in a forest. The park it self and hike is fantastic. Tip.... take gorge trail for a more scenic hike that is much easier than Rim trail from the bottom. We took the Gorge all the way to the top park and then Rim trail from the top back down. The views are great and the climb can be a little challenging if you are not in shape. Park is well maintained and they are in the process of adding steps where there are steep climbs.Swimming was closed during the time we were there but it looks like it would have been a lot of fun.Bathrooms and showers where clean and had hot water!!!Definitely would visit again but my choose to camp elsewhere.
So many words have come to my mind to describe this hidden paradise which may make you speechless. Unbelievably amazing and gorgeous. Wonderful scenic place where you can enjoy the nature at its best.A natural pool under a waterfall is a perfect relief after hiking on the breathtaking trails.Make sure you experience this miracle of the nature at least once in your life. You wont be regretful.
Waterfalls, woods, stone steps, camping, cabins, swimming under a waterfall. This is an outstanding place to visit. There is plenty of space for having a picnic. The Gorge Trail was closed when I was there but it looks like it would be an excellent walk that leads you close to the waterfalls and the creek. The Rim Trail was really cool although it was very crowded in both directions. The old mill building by the upper falls is definitely worth checking out. If the Gorge Trail is closed you can make a nice loop by doing the Rim Trail in one direction and the Finger Lakes Trail in the other direction. Just make sure you have a map so you can navigate between the Finger Lakes Trail and the campground area.
We initially wanted to swim at Buttermilk Falls but we were told that the swimming hole was closed for the season so we decided to come here. It was a little busy around lunchtime but most people were practicing social distancing. The water was a balmy 59 degrees. The kids loved jumping off the diving board. A cool place to check out especially with kids.
We spent two nights camping at Robert H. Treman State Park. The campground has an area with wooded sites, an area with sites in a large field (with hookups for RVs), and an area for the cabins (which looked very cool). All sites have fire rings and a picnic table. There are also flush toilets and free showers; these facilities were well-maintained and clean. We stayed in site 35 which is a wooded site located at the end of a loop. It was one of the larger, more private sites; reserve it if it is available. The park contains nine miles of hiking trails. We hiked the Gorge Trail (2.12 miles) with a return on the Rim Trail (2.09 miles) to create a loop from the campground. The hike took us alongside the gorge of Enfield Glen and past twelve waterfalls. The route was a lot of up and down with terrain through wooded areas as well as on rocks next to the water. However, the stunning views and its variety did not disappoint. Unfortunately the swimming area was closed due to flooding but it would be a perfect ending to this hike on a warm summer day.Overall, this park was great. The size was just right with on-site access to hiking and swimming. The nearby amenities of downtown Ithaca was a bonus!
I spent 8 dollars to spend 20 minutes in this park...The waterfalls were awesome, although theyre redoing all the fun stuff to do and it was very limiting. We did Treman and Buttermilk Falls parks within an hour. They really need to offer a day pass to both parks or at least offer a discount with proof of payment for 1 park or the other.Certainly not going back here ever.
We spent a day at Robert Treman State Park and could have spend an entire weekend. The kids swam in the swimming area, which for people with little ones, they only allow coast guard approved floatation devices, so no arm floaties allowed. My kids are older, but the lifeguards did yell at others. There are ALOT of trails, we only managed to walk up one, but the trails had fences, and stairs, which made it easy to walk on. Definitely consider spending a weekend here with the family.
This place is simply beautiful!! After reading reviews on Trip Advisor, I decided to walk up the Rim Trail and back to the campsite via the Gorge Trail. I had 2 50lb dogs with me. We also started just prior to 9AM. The Rim Trail is mostly like walking along a creek in the woods. The upper portion of the trail features a lot of steep stairs and beautiful views of the falls. Both dogs enjoyed the fresh water breaks along the way. The Gorge Trial features a lot of gorgeous rock, bridges, and a closer interaction with the water. It takes about 2 hours, with a few breaks, to complete both trails. If you have limited time, park at the top and do the UpperFalls. As far as the campsite I booked, I was a bit disappointed. Through no fault of the park. The site, E1 had electric, but was too shallow to park my 23 foot RV. It was also hard to tie the dogs up as the road was so close and it is a completely stone site. I would book at the park again just not that site.
Its no Watkins Glen but absolutely worth a visit if you are in the area. Start at the bottom and hike up. Doing so will ensure that you have the best view of each waterfall as your are hiking to it. The first 3/4 of the trek from the bottom is rather uneventful, but it takes a drastic turn as you near the top that makes it worth the effort. Be careful on the muddy steps. I slipped on one and came away with a nasty bruise. Dont be afraid to occasionally wander off the beaten track because it will truly impress at times. I hiked up through the canyon and then took the rim trail back down. This was a mistake as the rim trail was rather dull with the exception one decent viewing point. I would have preferred to hike back down through the canyon. Bring water with you.
Beautiful state park minutes away from Ithaca. Very popular for diving and swimming (until September mostly). We went camping (tents) and loved it. For camping, just so you know the new loop (sites 50s, 60s etc) is in a wide open field. Ok for trailers, not so okay for tents. Campground firewood is slightly pricey BUT the quality and quantity evens everything out. Lot of water spigots all around the campsites. Enjoy the park whether its for a day trip or longer
Spectacular park! ... but know there is a lot of stairs. We started at the upper end near the old mill and walked the gorge to Lucifer Falls then crossed the bridge and took the rim trail back to the old mill area. You climb about 200ft up via stairs so be prepared. The views are worth it!
Another great State Park for hiking and this one just so happens to have a swimming area that is very popular on a hot day. Even though the amount of vehicles parked dont always mean its those at the pool, it could be some hikers as well. But when the temperature heats up you can count on the cars being there for the swimming area. As for the hiking here, its also a very good trail with areas to stop and cool off in if need be. So definitely wear some breathable shorts or something that dries quick so you can take advantage of this. Learned that the hard way. Watching everyone else cooling off during a hike is never fun. But if you want the hike to be slightly easier, Id say start out on the trail the side the office is on. If you start out on the other end, be prepared to climb the steep stairs and hills rather than coming down them. Its much easier coming down them. Be safe and ENJOY!!!
A beautiful park! There was a fee to get in, but it was reasonable and good for the day. I hiked the Rim Trail and it was beautiful and well maintained. It was a good work out but not very difficult. Swimming is closed due to COVID and masks are suggested in more congested areas. The trail wasnt crowded and the scenery is so nice. Great experience!
Another feather in the hat is this state park in the upstate NY. Beautiful park with amazing lush greens and peaks surrounded with tall trees. Wonderful fall in the center for the park. What I felt is it has to be little more specific on mentioning the directions of the trails and fall. They did well by mentioning the danger zone and the prohibit areas but no sign of north or south kind of guiding signs which take us to different trails. Only the locals or people who visited often may know the direction easily but people like us, the first timers are little confused. Also the rest rooms nears the fall were closed. Over all it is an awesome place to be with family and children.
What an awesome park for hiking! We went in the beginning of January so many of the main trails were closed (it was super icy), but you can get from the overlook to the lower falls by taking the finger lakes trail off of the gorge trail. A little bit longer of a hike, but not as crowded (we didnt see anyone). Definitely bring some hiking shoes because the trails are steep and slippery!
Beautifully kept campground. The cabins are sweet! Best cabin is # 8 - overlooking the creek. 2 Big playgrounds for kids, need ce showers and restrooms. The swimming are is great for kids and adults. The hke to Lucifer Falls is 2 hours uphill from the lower parking area but worth it. Take water!
Pictures dont do this place justice, the falls and the gorge are breathtaking. We went on a cooler cloudy day and it was almost empty which was great. The falls section was steep but not difficult and there were plenty of great spots for pictures. A loop of the upper gorge section took us just over an hour to walk at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops for pictures. If youre in the area and you want to see falls this park is great.
We loved this park. The campsite for our popup was large, level, shaded, and had electric, but no water. The bathroom and showers were fine; not 5 star, but clean and well maintained. The gorge hike was awesome and we walked past several waterfalls. We came after Labor Day so swimming at the Lower Falls had ended for the season, but looked like fun. We could have spent more time here exploring, and we hope to come back.
Beautiful park, but it’s a good hike to get to the big waterfall. My friend and went there for a hike and it started raining while we were on the way...we still managed to make it there anyway. Definitely looks beautiful, but I imagine I looks better when the weather is nicer.
Trail made me cry, but was worth the hike. Lots of steps and steep climbs. Get there early on weekends, parking gets full. It cost $8 to park but is for all day. We took the trail and saw gorgeous waterfalls including lucifers falls. Dont skip the one behind the old mill
This park is great! My family and I loved walking on some of the trails. It gave us a good workout with some of those steep stairs, but was well worth it for the views. We started on the Gorge Trail from our parting lot and followed it down till we took the bridge over to get on the Rim Trail. It was only around 3 miles total, but it took us 3 hours to walk it. We did have 3 small kids though and stopped a few times for the views and a snack. The only complaint I would have is that some parts of the trail are eroding away and are unsafe. Its hard to stay away from the edge when its all edge is some spots and there is only room for 1 foot at a time. This was only is a few spots though and we kept a hand on our kids at all times while crossing it. I wouldnt suggest the trails to people with strong-willed children. Unless safety isnt your biggest concern. Thankfully our children stayed next to us so if they tripped over a root or rock we were their to catch them. The swimming area is really nice, but I read once that you can get leaches from the waterfall. 😬 No one went near that though and the water in the area we could swim in got pretty deep. The kids even found a salamander and set it down by a rock away from the people so it wouldnt get stepped on. Its a wonderful family fun park and we will definitely be going back!
One of my favorite spots in the area. Lucifer Falls is amazing. I regularly hike or run the entire rim trail/gorge trail loop. It can get crowded during the summer weekends but its a refuge early in the morning. With COVID, you need to bring a mask in case you come across others and cant distance. Its one way up the rim and down the gorge for now.The trails do close when it gets icy, so check if youre planning coming late in the season or early spring.
Love the diving board into the base of the falls. Water is on the cooler side, but on 85+ degree days, it is refreshing.I actually lost my Apple Watch when I jumped off the diving board. Luckily a lifeguard went in later dived, and found it for me. Lesson learned, take off your watch before jumping in.Hiked the gorge trail and rim trail here. Trails are scenic and give good views of several waterfalls.
Haven’t been here since I was a kid but everything was just as I remembered it if not even better. Gathered with friends at the upper Treman grill area and enjoyed our lunch together then hiked the falls loop. On return we toured the amazingly well preserved/restored mill. Even better than when I was a child as I could more thoroughly appreciate the design and construction now. I do hope they are able to install some sort of fire suppression system in the old mill as the ancient wood construction looks incredibly vulnerable to nature, defect or vandalism currently. Great spot, cannot wait to visit again.
This is a gem of a park. It features a beautiful gorge trail and several waterfalls, most notably Lucifer Falls. In the summer you can hike through the gorge; in winter part if the rim trail is open, and you can get a partial view of Lucifer Falls. I hiked there recently during a snow fall, and it was absolutely gorgeous!
This is my favorite New York state park, possibly my favorite park anywhere. My wife & I got married here; we camp & hike here every summer. The trails are well kept and naturally beautiful. The campsites are also well kept, typically well spaced, the shower house is always in good order. The lower north shelter is gorgeous. The park staff are friendly and helpful. The park is right outside Ithaca so you can run out to the store or for dinner if youre camping, or you can stay in a hotel and hike for the day. Its nearby to other state parks as well. Ive never been disappointed by a trip here.
The park itself is wonderful. Beautiful walking trails, waterfalls and a natural swimming area. The playgrounds are better than most we’ve seen.Electric campsites 1-6 are set up top of a hill which isnt apparent until you arrive. We stayed in campsite 4 with our 27’ camper. I have a few things to pick with our campsite. There is a tree in the middle of the campsite which makes it very difficult to park. We had to rest the rear jack on a log in order for our slide out to clear the tree. It’s obnoxious really. There are also no water spickets up top of the hill, yet the lower campsites with electric have them near by. Not really fair in my opinion. My advice would be to camp in electric sites 7-11 if you can. You won’t have to deal with the stress of a tree in the middle of your site. You won’t have to hall your camper up a sketchy hill and you’ll get to enjoy the luxury of water fill-ups.
A large state park, with multiple waterfalls and a swimming hole close to the end of the lower layer area. Theres a Gorge Trail and a rim trail, each take you around different sides and have different views of the water and the water falls within the park. Is a few miles on the trail each way so you need to make sure you have enough stamina to get through all the stairs and slopes. There are a couple of areas where you can get closer to the river and weighed in some of the shallow water, where other areas are steep and have waterfalls. Know that you should be careful of animals on the path, we saw deer, snakes, mice, chipmunks, fish and frogs. While they have distancing signs up, not everybody adheres to that and some of the areas are quite narrow. Theres also some portions of the gorge path that are still under construction so they are narrow and slick, particularly after a rain or snow.
This is a rare find and highlights the beauty of Gods creation. The Falls are amazing some of them stunning. Steps going up are challenging what you really feel great when you complete the hike. You cant go wrong with this hike. Do it during the week rather than on the weekend because it gets really busy.
I grew up taking family vacations here in the 50s and 60s and have many fond memories. I recently returned for the first time since 1969 and found that little has changed, which was a very welcomed surprise. The original sites are small by todays standards as most people used tents at the time but they have also expanded a large area to accommodate large RVs. The cabins, built in the 30s, look exactly the same, until you see the insides which have been remodeled rustic style, although beautifully done. There is an amazing swimming area built at the bottom of a georgous falls, and dammed to create a very large swimming area. The swim area contains a large amount of stone work creating a natural appearance thats as nice to see as it is to use. Then there are two trails, one on each side of the gorge, that follow the stream up through the gorge. One is mostly dirt with some steps in the steeper areas while the other is done almost completely in masonry and stone work. Absolutely beautiful! Words and pictures truly dont do justice to this entire park.If youre ever close, do yourself a huge favor and visit, even if just for the day. You wont be disappointed. This picture was taken before they replaced the dam to fill for the summer.
Truly Treman-dous!Lower Treman:A clean stream fed waterfall of good size which you can swim right next to! And a surrounding natural pool you can springboard into! All while under the watchful eye of diligent lifeguards! And nearby washrooms and changerooms with showers! All for an eight dollars parking fee (the receipt for which also lets you park at Upper Treman and Watkins Glen, etc on the same day)! How many places in our corner of the world are like that?Upper Treman:An old mill at the parking area and an incredible series of falls and pools of water while hiking along the gorge walls and then the majestic Lucifer Falls.Tip 1: If you can time your visit to arrive a day or so after some good summer rains then you will enjoy significantly better water flows at the falls.Tip 2: I didnt catch her name but there is a blonde with blue eyes in the park office who is super nice and can tell you all about the Finger Lakes wine trail.Tip 3: If you like spending time outdoors then plan ahead for a whole day here.Thank you NY State Parks and all the volunteers through history who have made this available for outdoors enthusiasts to enjoy!
This is another larger state park and has both an upper and lower portion. There are numerous trails that are maintained. The Gorge Trial is closed during the late fall and winter months due to safety concerns. There are camping sites and day use picnic areas with grills and tables. This park connects with the Finger Lake Trail which offers you miles and miles of scenic hiking.
We visited Robert H Treman State Park after we went to Watkins Glen State Park and in our opinion this park was far better. It wasnt as crowded to there was plenty of photo opportunities, and you were able to walk around with ease without having to worry about bumping into anyone. The two falls we saw were absolutely beautiful! They were each located on each side of the park, with a good hiking trail in between. Beautiful park, nice for picnics, hiking, photography and even camping!
Walking this gorge is half Watkins Glen, half Machu Pichu. Walkways are carved into the cliffs with little room to spare. Waterfalls are excellent and smaller crowds than the aforementioned Watkins Glen park allow you to enjoy it a little more or capture photos sans people if that’s your goal. State park admission at one park is good at all of them same day, so do a double with another nearby park if able.
Absolutely wonderful trail. Has inclines and declines, almost all with steps. Trail goes above creek along top of gorge and also dips down along the water. Great views of falls, gorge walls, woods and water. The trail is roughly a bit more than 2 miles and there are a couple routes. One vantage point has great views. The park itself has an upper and lower and the gorge trail connects the two. Well kept grounds with many improvements. Picnic areas, newer playground, lots of parking, camping and swimming. Just a couple miles from Ithaca. A must visit!
This is a gorgeous park with plenty of areas to visit. The hiking paths on the rim trail & gorge trail are fantastic, with beautiful views. The swimming area is so unique! The water was frigid, and it was a bit crowded (not surprising for Labor Day Weekend). But the view!!! The waterfall with the diving board right next to it makes you feel like a cliff diver! The bottom of the swimming area is a bit rocky in spots, so you might want water shoes, but we handled it barefoot.
Went for a 2 night camping trip and hiking -Camping: Decent campsites, bathrooms are warm and even have charging outlets. Note that modern sites are RV sites but are flatter. The true tent sites are called rustic.Hiking: From the campsite highly recommend taking the Rim trail ascending and gorge trail descending. Rim trail can get quite muddy and there is a stretch of steep stairs, but it did make going down the gorge trail and waterfalls so much more enjoyable. We went the day after rainfall and the gorges were truly unbelievably gorgeous!
This is one of the best NY state parks Ive been to. My only complaint is lack of parking especially since it can be quite busy. The river has many falls and ponds to relax in and the trail has a nice amount of climbing up and going down for a good workout. Ill be coming here every summer.
Exceeded expectations of a wonderful unforgettable experience. The hike through the gorge is challenging exceeded only by the views of the many waterfalls as you traverse the walkways and steps carved from the rock surrounding the breathtaking thunderous rush of natures magnificence. If youre not into the challenge of the five mile loop just park in the upper parking lot which affords a simple walk to the majestic Lucifers falls and an experience of awe and wonder up close and personal.
This swimming hole at Enfield Falls inside Robert H. Treman State Park (past the back parking lot!) was amazing! The water at the end of the fall was very deep, untouchable actually, but incredible! Hope you can swim! Masks required. Lifeguards on duty. Theres also a (much colder) section where you can touch bottom for the kiddos. Enjoy & bee safe!
This place is beautiful!! Falls are really nice.. quiet and peaceful..Camping is possible for everyone, I just recommend don’t camp next to the trees ( numbers 32- 36) because ground is no the best.. .Bathroom are clean, although it could be better.I recommend this place .
Like others suggested, go to the UPPER Park Entrance, follow the Gorge Trail and youll find Lucifer Falls. This is such a great place to hike, see great views of waterfalls, and beautiful scenery all around! Well worth the $9 parking fee, and I completely appreciate the Take Your Garbage With You policy. The park is well maintained and very clean. Great outing for the whole family! (I would have posted more, but I cant post videos, and prefer not to post pics of family... sorry, but trust me when I say that you will enjoy this state parks hiking!)
Since everyone is talking about the state park itself, I’m going to comment on the cabin since we stayed here for the weekend. To be honest, I kept my standards really low and was somewhat dreading it, but I was very surprised by how well kept everything was.The cabin is pretty much what you see and what you get from their stock image online. The mattress is covered in this waterproof stiff material, so you wouldn’t have to worry about the bed being damp or being infested with bedbugs. The fridge is in great condition and it’s clean. Plenty of outlets too although I’d definitely bring a power strip. As for the bathrooms, I’m surprised again because I thought it’d be downright disgusting, but it’s so clean and doesn’t smell of anything funky. Unfortunately there’s only one communal shower facility which is quite a long walk away, so even if you order a cabin that’s closest to that specific bathroom, I’d still drive there (which has plenty of parking anyway)Staff were friendly and helpful. We discovered a bat in our cabin and the staff were attentive and very prompt with removing it. They even followed up through a phone call after our stay.Overall, the cabin stay was great! Its not super cold, there were no leaking from the rain, and it had all the basic necessities we needed.
Amazing park. A must stop and visit.Winding trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, to where visitors can see a mile-and-a-half down the wooded gorge as it winds its way to the lower park. Enjoy nine miles of hiking trails, or swim in a stream-fed pool beneath a waterfall.
Another beautiful Ithaca park! One of the unusual, must visit, swimming areas in the country, at the base of a 45 foot fall.. Great gorge hike but not for the weak. Many falls for your visual delite. No better way to wash your troubles away than listen to the water as it flows towards Cayuga Lake. Historical multistory mill at the upper park with complete access to the public. Truly a visit to how our country was built. Not to be missed!
The natural beauty of the waterfalls is phenomenal. Unfortunately, the campsites are in very poor disrepair and the roads are ruddy and filled with mud Etc. The lower hike trail to the Upper Falls was unfortunately closed after we got in there about three-quarters of a mile. Had to go back and take the upper Trail in order to see the majority of the waterfalls which was very spectacular.
Amazing place to explore and discover the beauty of nature. The hike is safe and fun but it can be a challenge if you dont have the right shoes and if you are not adjusted to walking long distance in uneven terrain. The views are breath taking just like the steps along the trail. It looks like is really well maintained, very clean with maps available at park office near the parking lot.
This park is incredible. There are several waterfalls and the trail follows a river with many cascades. The trail is straight in about 2 miles so if you follow it all the way down be prepared you have to walk all the way back up as well. There is a spot in the Middle where you can climb up a big hill that takes you back around to the beginning. Lucifer Falls is the picture I included and it is absolutely stunning to see.
Ive been tent camping here a few times and the sites are always very well maintained. You arent right on top of your neighbor either, which is nice. Beautiful hiking trails and unique swimming places with outbuildings makes this a must see, even if you only come in for the day.
Love this park. The water was a refreshing 58 degrees Fahrenheit. The falls are awe inspiring. And all the facilities are spotless. I want to live at this place all summer. The swimming area was art deco meets nature. Could not build this place in this day and age.Not to be missed.
Great camping experience here!!! We stayed on site 57 which is only sun!!! Be aware there is NO shade in that loop. Huge sites!!!! The swimming hole is awesome and equipped with a diving board. We had an excellent time here. I think Ill go back every year. The hiking trails were magnificent. Showers and bathroom spacious. The kids park was so cute with hidden racoon made into the playground as well as squirrels.
Unless youre an avid hiker, do not start either the gorge or rim trail from the lower falls area to do a loop. Absolutely zero water scenes for the first 1.5 miles. Lucifer falls is worth it, but suggest that you start from the upper area gorge trail so that the hike is short (0.5 miles 1 way, and return up the way you came because the other side has nothing!)Watkins Glen and Buttermilk falls were much better and well maintained. Its a travesty that NY is charging for this park.

2022-06-08My friend and I visited in early June. We first stopped at the lower falls, took the gorge trail up to Lucifer falls and were not disappointed. The foliage was lush from rain and the trails were very well maintained. Note that this IS a challenging 2 miles with a good amount of elevation change. The views of Lucifer falls at the end of the trail are worth the hike.

2022-06-14Beautiful park, the gorge trail is steep and somewhat difficult but worth it because of the waterfalls youll see along the way. There were swarms of gnats today, yuck. Also disappointed that swimming was closed today. All in all its a beautiful park to explore and a great workout.

2021-12-15Wow! What a beautiful surprise. This park is stunning. We parked in the upper lot and hiked to Lucifer Falls on the rim trail.. It was magical. The path is reminiscent of being inside a stone castle. The series of falls and pool were stunning. After, we drove to the lower parking lot and hiked to the lower falls.Be aware that the hike from the lower lot is extremely steep. Both trails have many steps and inclines. We would have like to have hiked the entire trail round trip (4 miles ) but we were warned that due to the steepness of trail we should allocate about 4-5 hours. Sun sets early in the winter and we did not want to be on the trail after dark.In season, there is a shuttle that runs between the upper and lower parking lots for those who want to hike the trail one way. If you take that option, hike from the upper lot down to the lower lot.Bring water, dress in layers and wear hiking boots.

2022-04-21I would wait to attend this park until after the trails are open. However, it was cool to see the snow spring meltdown today. I usually go in the summer when it is crowded. A lot of people go swimming in a water hole that has a diving board. The trails are shaded. There is definitely some elevation change, but the views are fantastic. I suggest you do not go wading in the stream off trail because my cousin and I did that, and we were COVERED IN HUNDREDS OF TINY LEECHES!!! Our fault for not following the rules. We did not get leeches in the regulated swimming hole, so thats safe.

2022-06-20Beautiful waterfalls and scenery!! We Took the Gorge trail and it is difficult and challenging at times, especially the beginning but I will say it was worth the views along the way.

2021-09-02Wonderful nature scene! Worth to visit. Best scenes are upper part of the trails. If you dont want long walk, go to the upper park lot and walk down the stairs and return along the water. Be minded: water temperature is about 65=70F in summer, kind of chill to swim.

2022-06-28Swimming area is under excavation. Maybe a landslide over the winter? Theyre hoping to open July 1. Waterfall is small but pretty. If the swimming area was open, it would get 4 stars.

2021-07-20This is an amazing state park! Lucifer waterfall despite the name is gorgeous! The hike from the lower parking lot is almost 2 miles. If you want to see most of the waterfalls without the hike then just drive up to the upper level parking lot. Most of the really nice waterfalls scenic hikes is from the top anyways. The hike from the lower level is nice but just trees mostly. The hike can be tough from the lower level but refreshing . Definitely check this park out for the hiking and swimming!

2021-11-02I had read quite a few recommendations for visiting this state park before we started our trip to the finger lakes region all the way from Northern Virginia and boy, oh boy, they couldnt have been anymore right on the dime. We started with Watkins Glen, peaked through Buttermilk Falls State Park and deserted at Robert Tremans. Make sure you park closer to the head of the falls where it starts. The best way to do it is search for Lucifer falls in Google maps. Gratification is quite instant and it soon dawns on you that the place in insane and continuously evolving. 2 miles one way. Plenty of parking. We enjoyed with our 6 year old who kept experimenting with flow currents. A hidden gem.

2022-01-09Definitely worth going to! Ive gone twice -- once in the summer and just recently in the winter. In the winter be careful because the trails can be icy.
