My favorite movie theater. You can tell the owners really care. One of the best deals you can find for seeing a movie in a theater - especially if you go for a double feature. And the snacks are less expensive than most movie theaters. Plus, lots of great vegan options!
Wonderful & inexpensive way to see movies recently past. Also sometimes iconic old films. Funky fun place. Great people (family owned). Good popcorn, cookies, candy, snacks, drinks. Cat lives there & wanders around. Very worthwhile neighborhood theatre. Across the street from Highland Diner, great food.
I absolutely love coming here for a cheap and relaxing date night. Prices for tickets and food are unbeatable. They show both popular movies and films I wouldnt think to see otherwise, but still enjoy. While I adore the overall vintage atmosphere, a few things could use a little updating. Great neighborhood go-to!
This cinema is the best! Every week they post great movies for the movie goers. My lady and I live just a few hundred yards away. And we absolutely love it. The people that run and operate this cinema are the most kind and polite people you ever what to meet. Theyre right on the ball to help you in anyway. We are both seniors and we love the discount. But if we had to pay full price it would not matter we love it here! And let me add the popcorn is excellent! Keep up the great work guy. Sincerely Jim&Deb
The Cinema Theatre has transformed me into a much bigger movie goer than I ever was. At $3 a pop for students (and sometimes two pops, during the double features), the prices really cant be beat. They show mostly movies that have been out of theaters for a few months -- basically, movies that are still new enough to be cool, but old enough to not break your bank. Note: they only take cash. The theatre doesnt do that many showings (maybe one or two a day) and its never that full. Nothing fancy; def old school cool. I love this place and Im there a few times every month. If you havent gone before, definitely go check it out!
This corner of Rochester feels like 1950. This theatre has one screen, shows movies after their run at the bigger theatres. This place has a cozy feel, the staff is friendly (especially the guy who runs concessions, you could talk to him for hours, he is so cool). He told us (and I feel this is true) you can either find a garbage movie or a great movie they end up playing. They have two individual shows during the day and a double feature at night. The double feature is $5...which is amazing even for terrible films. I saw Lucky Logan and The Big Sick, both of which I would have never seen on my own and are both fantastic, which goes back to the fact you can find great films.Concessions are priced great: we got popcorn, soda and 2 candies (m&Ms) for $11.The seats arent anything to rave about and it looks like its going through a paint job. Theres a oscillating fan in the front of the theater and when the aspect ratio of the film changed, they had to literally move the screen...as in someone had to go up and move it.In short, it is not Regal or AMC, not by a long shot, not even Movies 10. Its like the only-theatre-in-a-small-Stephen King-type-dirt-road-population-of-300-type-of-town.Its so nostalgic. I think its the kind of place youll love or hate. I loved it. I described the place like a dump. And it kind of is. But I gave it 5 stars for the feel, the interactions I had, and the prices for what you get. Also, for every $12 you spend at the Highland Diner across the street, you get a free ticket. You have to use it that day, but its great for dinner and a movie on a budget or for just for some classic feeling fun.
Super cute, the front entrance is a little confusing though. We came here for a school fundraiser. They definitely need a larger variety of candy since it’s holds a longer shelf life. All the staff was quite friendly and patient when my kids were quite sure what they wanted from the food bar. Also love that it didn’t cost an arm and a leg to go to the movies!! Parking was also confusing because of the area, wondering if there is a dedicated area they suggest to park. Luckily I didn’t get a ticket for being parked for over an hour on the street!
Great place to watch a double feature for only 5 bucks!!! Generally all new releases, but they will throw in an older movie like a late rocky horror picture show. Snacks are every reasonably priced. Very chill, local feel. Please support them as they have been around for a long time :)
Although the cinema doesnt have the reclining chairs that many theatres do today, it is my favorite place to see a movie. Students only pay 3 dollars, and you get to see TWO movies. This is a fraction of what other local theatres charge. All of the concessions are reasonably priced as well. Me and a friend have made it a tradition to come to this theatre and you should too!
One of the best theaters in town. Where else can you go for a Double Feature for $5, less if you buy a book of tickets. Real lemonade. A one eyed cat, and s private family room upstairs if you request it (no extra charge). When our kids were little, it was s life saver.
This is the best family run business in the South Wedge. Great films (and sometimes movies) at a great price. People who remember your face and care about your viewing experience. Separate viewing area for families with babies? Check. $1 refills on popcorn and fountain drinks? Check. Awesome spices and salts for your popcorn? Check. (Seriously. I love food-grade yeastie beasties). Go to The Cinema. Have a party there. Have a Bat Mitzvah, birthday party, date night... just go.
Really cool, old school homey, neighborhood movie spot. It has the potential to be much more if theyd get their social media interaction out of the dark ages. We saw Wonder Woman at a matinee for $3. That place should have been packed with families . There were less than 20 people. All shortcomings were made exponentially better by the staff. Great job guys!
Love this place. Grew up attending flicks there and still do. All these big franchise theaters aint diddly squat compared to the experience you get. People who live in the city love the idea of not having to go out to the burbs to go see a film. Theres nothing like the Cinema!!
Its like stepping back in time. Double feature for less than the price of one movie elsewhere. Popcorn and drinks have a discount refill and the other snacks are also priced out of another era. The ambiance is interesting to say the least. More of a Deco facade, the seats also seem to be from another era but nothings perfect. Come on out and maybe the cat will sit in your lap?
The Cinema Theater is a Rochester landmark with its flamigo pink stucco, Art Deco exterior and marquee. The owners are lovely and the staff is wonderful, as are the three rescue cats (one blind) who live there (usually up in the office for those with allergies). Its always clean (bathrooms included, something not true of the chain theaters), comfortable and inviting. Its obvious they try there best to get the best of current cinema, not limited to blockbusters, but indie and foreign films, some of which you wont see anywhere else in Monroe County. Dont let the low price of seven dollars fool you. This isnt some second-run theater. This theater rivals The Little with its selections. Theres also open caption Wednesday for the hearing impared. This is truly a community movie house.
My favorite theatre for life. This place holds a huge part of my heart. So thankful for the new owners who embrace ethical treatment of animals (& plan to offer adoption events), local treats, and keep the tradition of having a kitty roaming around. Ohh, my heart just warms every time I think of the Cinema. Oh, and they feature local movies, events (you can schedule a private viewing - which Ive been meaning to do for YEARS), and ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW nights!!! Stop down. Its $5 double feature, affordable drinks + popcorn & my favorite iced tea in town!
The Cinema is a community cornerstone. The film selections are thoughtful, the owner and staff are gracious, and the prices are unbeatable. I particularly like the broad range of films that play here, from gritty independent films to massive studio blockbusters. If you want to stay up to date on current movies without spending a fortune, this is the place to go.
One of the best little secrets of Rochester. Granted, theres some seats that need repairs, and the place may not look like much, but they offer you a double feature for $5, and $1 refills on popcorn and drinks, so how can you complain? Besides, once the lights are down, the movie and sound quality are great, so whos looking at the paint on the walls!?Jim behind the concession stand is one of the nicest folks youll ever meet. Hes also an artist-- look for his work lighting up the screen pre-show. I believe this is place has the record for longest time continuously open as a cinema for the USA-- but if Im wrong, its still been a staple for Rochesterians since long before I was going to see movies. Currently theyre trying to fund raise to cover the loan they had to take to convert to digital, so if you can afford to make a donation, please do!Oh, and the cinema cat!!! This place has a resident kitty who loves having her crowd come to make a fuss over her. The current kitty, Sue, the one-eyed wonder is quite the character, and I still mourn the previous feline, Princess, whod been my movie lap-cat for many years. Dont worry if you dont like cats-- these kitties have enough admirers that even their fans dont always get to spend time with them each visit, so you wont be hounded by a cat if you dont want to be. :)Not sure if they still have the family quiet room available in the balcony, but that was always a great room to reserve for folks who came with small kids, so they wouldnt disrupt the movie for everyone else. Had a couple dates up there in my youth, when it wasnt reserved for babies or wee ones, and theres nothing like snuggling on a couch in your own private little viewing room.
17 years as a city dweller, this was always a regular and favorite place to see a movie. Now that I am 40 minutes away it is a haul, but I try to still support them when I come to the city to see a movie. I must say though, the last two times I was there, the popcorn was stale and I dont like the switch to the fake butter.
Not my thing. I found the serving of food, lights on tables all a distraction. The tables and office chairs were a turn off for me because I felt like I was in my office watching a movie. However, there is nothing they could do differently, the experience just wasnt for me. It was very cold and I like cold but it was too cold for me. I just did not enjoy the experience. It was underwhelming for me personally but employees/owners were welcoming. My 23 year old son felt the same. We would not return.

2022-06-06Checked out the cinema tonight for the first time and we absolutely loved it! Such a great concept, awesome food and drink menu and everyone working there was so helpful and nice. I will definitely be back. My only issue was that it is way too cold in the theater so bundle up or bring a blanket!

2022-07-03What can I say Roc Cinema is a great place with great food. The sound quality is as good as your Big theaters and the chairs were comfortable. The food was prepared quickly and quality on par with your high end restaurant at a lower cost.

2019-05-26The theater is very cute. It reminds me of when I was young and got to go to the movies. Prices are very inexpensive. The staff is wonderful. All the snack bar treats are vegan. They do have butter for your popcorn if you want. They take cash and charge cards. It is the oldest consecutively operated movie theater in the United States .The movie we saw was EVELYN. It was a very touching movie to see. It was about how a family is dealing with the suicide of one member of there family 13 years after the fact.

2019-03-06Been coming here for years now, definitely a permanent spot on my radar. Under new management, the prices are slightly higher than theyve been, but student tickets are just $5 and they always have the best showings. The staff is an awesome cast, always friendly and willing to converse about obscure movies and genres. Ive never had a bad experience here, the cinema is always great!

2018-06-23You cant beat the price. 2 movies for $5.00! Everyone that works here are so nice and caring. They try and chat with every person that walks through their doors. They are very welcoming and attentive to their customers. After the movies, they seem thrilled to hear that youve enjoyed the movies, and had a pleasant evening. Ive never experienced anything like this at any of the other movie theaters. Great job everyone!
