Rudy’s is a family tradition. Order online or in person. They now take credit cards, but charge extra. Don’t feed the seagulls. Order the lobster roll. Order the fried scallops. Order the fish & chips. Cheeseburger Hot was meh, skip it. Also skip the fried crab bites & jalapeño & cheese things. They also have good fried smelt here.
I placed an order at 312pm. At 345 after not hearing anything to be told is takes 10 minutes for them to get an order online(clearly I missed that and that part is on me) and they are busy. The email receipt said I would get a text. Surprise they call first. I sent my Husband in to get our food. He came back and we were missing a hotdog. Again I went inside and it was ready and just sitting in the window. Got that to my daughter who has autism and only eats a few select things! Hot dog is cold!!!! At this point I give it isnt worth my time nor energy to go BACK IN! At this point my daughter is upset, I am flustered and over it! After this I will honestly be reconsidering going again. Not only was it an issue with my order but 2 other people walked in with issues. When you look at someone and automatically say what are you missing there is a problem!
It takes about 6 hours to get to Oswego, NY from my house in PA. Rudys is the main reason I visit. Seriously! I get the haddock sandwich every time. The fish tastes so good! It is fresh and it kind of melts in your mouth. This is a great place to eat while socially distancing as well. It was pretty busy when I went and still there was plenty of outdoor seating without being close to anyone. The staff is on point / friendly and for as busy as it was my order did not take long at all (of course the amazing view of Lake Ontario helped to pass the time).
The way you order online takes 10 minutes for it to go through so you better plan ahead. The food was ok tasting, was not very hot because it takes too long to get through the line of people who just stand in the way of you getting your food. Employees acted like it was an inconvenience for them to help you.
Rudys is an Oswego tradition. The texas hots, fish sandwiches, the view of the water, and all..My last experience here was 30$ for just (a VERY greesy) fish sandwich, sweet potato fries (small portion), jalapeño poppers, and a draft beer. It took over an hour and 30 minutes. LNot to mention they had NO chicken salad on the menu everytime Ive been here. I am not trying to get diabetes every time I go here. Bring back the salad. Some girl passed out in line from heat exhaustion and low blood sugar. They were kind to offer her a water bottle but no food. They seem really pricey because they know you will pay for whatever they cook up. Because of the location by the water they think their prices are fair. Its really not. Its way overpriced and long wait times. Nobody likes that in a restaurant.I wish this place took more pride in their food and presentation than they do anything else. Unfortunately its not like it used to be.
Short girl taking the order really needs to slow down! She mixed up orders with the other cashiers, we order 2 items and received one. Didn’t realize it until we left, even though I repeated myself twice! Then couldn’t even find the sodas on the tablet sayinf they didn’t have them, the sodas were clear as day in the cooler. She looked at the cooler then magically found them. The workers use to be great, I get they just reopened but SLOW DOWN! repeat the orders like the other girl did so you don’t screw up orders
The view overlooking Lake Ontario while enjoying an evening dinner at Rudys Lakeside Drive-In was absolutely wonderful during the pandemic, social distancing, and mask wearing patrons. The season is closed, I look forward to the 2021 opening day, a new summer of fish and views like these... cant be beaten! My favorite dish to order is the fried fish sandwich, the salt potatoes, sweet potato fries, absolutely love the fresh potato fries too. I felt Rudys handled the pandemic restrictions very well, the customers seemed to agree as they showed in great numbers to dine and play in the water. Another awesome summer season, thank you staff and Rudys for being open during the pandemic so your customers and staff had some semblance of normalcy and great food, the view is always one to devour!
Amazing food and the fastest service in the known galaxy!! We just moved to oswego, never herd of it but after 1 meal we are fans for life!!! Everyone if friendly and if you dont know wha to get their staff will assist. They dont rush you, they truly love their job and appreciate the customers.
Such a beautiful setting and great food! Something for everyone at any age and ice cream for dessert! We have gone to Rudys every summer for many years! They have tables to sit at outside so you can just relax by the beautiful Lake Ontario. The kids love it and now they are taking their kids to Rudys!
Rudy’s is famous for their fish hot, burger hot, and everything hot. You can order your sandwiches with their special Texas Hot Sauce that consists of spices, ground hamburger, onions, and tomato sauce. Last night I tried the Mac and Cheese and it was so good. It had the perfect amount of creamy melted cheese. Next time I think I’m going to order a Mac and Cheese Hot!
Loved Rudys growing up as a kid. Was the Best fish fry in oswego county IMO. Key word being was sense i havent been there in years I decided to go. Ordered what they call a Red plate haddock dinner with fries and coleslaw. Only took about 15 mins or less for my food to come up. Which wasnt bad because they were busy. Anyways...i get home and open up my brown bag plate...and much to my surprise i got fish nuggets, fries and coleslaw. Fish was very bland, also very greasy like they didnt wait long enough for the frier to heat up. Overall I wouldnt recommend. However I will be going back at some point to try the burgers because they too used to be some of the best around.
Oh my gosh We never been to Rudys!!! How is that possible!! Lets just say so worth the 40 minute drive!! My Mom who is 82 was glad to introduce us!! I enjoyed a scallop dinner while Mom had center cut fish sandwich with chips. My other half enjoyed a blue plate with a side of slaw. Bring your on catsup tho if you are a fan. Tarter and seafood sauce are pletiful!! Also really decent recycling situation going 👌👍.What can I say about eating in open air lakeside. Really great. Most of the patrons were following Covid 19 direction. Lots of seating. Great place will be going many more time this year and from now on!!
My favorite place in NY to eat during the summer.I have been coming to Rudys for about 30 years because it was my parents favorite place for Haddock. In all of my summers making the drive to Oswego, I never said, that was terrible or awful service today. NEVER! Think about that! This place has perfected the food and service and accommodates very large crowds. Yes, sometimes you wait during peak times, but its so very worth it.Best fried Haddock in the area, trust me, I try to find a substitute every off season. It isnt out there! Im not certain why it tastes amazing, but its one of a kind. The Texas hot sauce is just perfect and has tasted the same since I can remember. The fries and other sides are excellent too. Perfectly cooked and always hot and fresh. Never old.I love the addition of the new credit/debit card reader. It takes away the anxiety of ordering what you want and realizing you didnt bring enough cash for your appetite!
So delicious! Had a shrimp and crab roll. Loaded, stuffed over the top of bun!! Celery too. Great cold roll. Added sweet potato fries which are crispy and soft! Lots of folks but the wait was short. They are closing on the 11th so you dont have much time to make your way over. Enjoy the water view while you eat. Check website for ordering options. There is no dining in.
We’ve been going to Rudy’s for 25 years, and it’s always been great. I don’t know what they did, but all of the food was completely different this time around, and not at all what it used to be. The mashed potatoes were the consistency of grits, and were cold. Mac and cheese had totally changed. The lobster roll was good at least. We were so disappointed! Rudy’s used to be the best of the best.
MEH! We drove up from Syracuse. Not worth the drive for the food but the scenic route is lovely. The grease for the fryer definitely needs to be changed...our scallops and clams were very dark brown, not golden. Tough to chew. The Rudys hot sauce, though, is tasty and unique. The applesauce was like soup. Good thing it cost only 90 cents. Liked the cracker crumb topping on the mac and cheese. Nice setting on the edge of Lake Ontario but we will stick closer to home for good seafood.
An addictive and wonderful place to visit! Perched on Lake Ontario, it is a must visit for locals, college students, and beach goers alike are drawn to this tasty fry shack. Come hungry, fried anything awaits. Pickles, zucchini, shrimp, sweet potato fries, the list is too long. Poutine anyone?
If there wasnt a wonderful lake adjacent I would not even give a one star. Ordered at window and wait for beeper to buzz for pickup. Thats generally OK. Waited a very very long time. Everyones fries cold. The included roll was nothing but a cheap hamburger bun placed cold on the plate which was also sitting in a cardboard box top holding 2 of 4 meals. Second two served the same. Asked order taker how is their home made New England Clam Chowder. Answer excellentl. I ordered it and it was just like colored flavored water. Not even a tad of being like normal. Just under $80.00 for 4 diners. One person only had only a sandwich. Obviously the lake has wind but peoples napkins etc blowing all over the place. Like being at a day camp. Rudys used to worth the ride. Now....way down hill.
One of my must visit places when in NY - love the atmosphere and food. Was busy tonight due to Father’s Day but was efficient - maybe that’s why the staff was a little short while taking my order? My 12 yr old daughter asked for ketchup with her shrimp order and was responded with “I didn’t ask you if you wanted any sauce now did I but OK”. Also there was a non cash adjustment added onto our bill of 6 people - so bring cash if you don’t want to pay extra.
Rudys is a staple in Oswego, my wife has been going here since she was a kid and together we have been going for almost a decade. One of the nicest attributes in my opinion is that they do not use peanut oil, as my wife is allergic. Additionally there are different fryers between shell fish and the others, again an allergy protection. I feel that pricing or portions have changed over time; as a haddock sandwich just doesnt seem like enough anymore, which is part of the reason for the 4 star. Further, the wait and line procession is poorly planed. Finally the last two times we have been, they have not filled our order correctly.
Rudys has a very efficient system for ordering and receiving your food. I cant say the fish sandwich was the best Ive had but for $8.49 it was a decent portion. When they say small they mean it..the small macaroni salad was about 2 bites but again only $.93 so I guess understandable. The biggest drawback are the extremely annoying seagulls that will grab your food out of your hand. One was bold enough to land on my husbands head! A big plus is there are a lot of picnic tables to sit and enjoy the lake while dining plus you can order ahead then use the drive through pickup to get your order.
Still the same after all these years. Its comforting to know that you can come here 20 years later and still have the same flavors you remember as a kid. I recently brought my three yr old here to have a hotdog and a chocolate milk just like I did when I was a kid. Oh and the clam strips were the best ever!
Last Sunday night, we visited Rudys. The line to order was very long. The young lady taking our order was very cheery and knowledgable and efficient. Then we had to wait a very long time in the line to pick up our food. The food was hot. My haddock sandwich was good, but my order of four salt potatoes was not. 3 of the potatoes were fine, but the last one was not even cooked. It must have been at the top of a pot that was overcrowded and not ever stirred. It was only my 2nd visit to Rudys; the first time was 20 years ago. The improvements to the picnic area are great. The food, however, was, once again, a big disappointment. The red plate and the blue plate haddock dinners were not even whole pieces of fish! Just chunks about 2 inches long. I dont expect to be back.
Excellent spot for summer eats! My stepfather always came here when he was a student at SUNY Oswego, and has always said good things. Their prices are very reasonable, portions are good sized, and the outdoor view is SPECTACULAR! If it wasnt so busy and if my kids werent impatient, I would have loved to hang out on the patio, listen to the water, have an adult beverage, and smell the lake air.
Atmosphere was A +. Food was ok. Is anything on the menu made on site? Deep fried everything. No way some Pacific Whitefish was fresh. Was fishy. Smelt were more breading than smelt. Hot Dogs, fries and burger was ok. How bout offer some thing besides onion on a hot dog? What is the deal with someone taking your order and staying there til order is complete. 4 people in my group and we were first time visitors. Fellow taking order had to put us on hold to bring orders. Why is it so hard for Oswego County businesses to take cards? Please use ATM and get spanked with fees. This is a college and supposedly a tourist area. Take cards. This is the 21st century.Updated 2022 review.. well Rudys redeemed itself. We made a return visit ... 100x better than our first time. We will return
Not what it used to be. Rudys was always a must stop whenever we were anywhere in NY..My grandparents used to take me every week when I was a child. I took my children and now I went with my grandchildren to celebrate my birthday ( where else would I go?) Food was mediocre at best. Portions were very small, especially the fries. First time Ive been disappointed at Rudys...unfortunately the last time well be going. Sad end to 4 generations of Rudys lovers. Why change something that worked well for so long?
Food is excellent. The lull of the yelling cashiers spewing out orders is part of the fun and experience. Very few rocks to skip as they have dumped many truckloads of processed Round Rocks which makes it difficult to Stand on by the Water. They are in severe need of remodeling for their bathrooms which are past due about ten years ago
A local legend of a fish and chips joint on Lake Ontario in Oswego, Rudys does a great fish and chips. Highly recommend you choose the hard roll with your fish sandwich (hint: its not really a hard roll, but a better soft roll than the standard roll and worth the extra change).
One of the best attractions along the edge of Lake Ontario is Rudys. The locals celebrate every year when it opens. The fish is fresh and perfectly fried, the French fries hot and golden. The setting is a pavilion or the rocky beach looking out on Lake Ontario. Parking is mostly across the road, next to a small park that usually contains picnic tables. Currently they use a buzzer system to let you know when your order is ready.Make sure you are HUNGRY when you go. The ice cream shop next door is a wonderful way to finish the meal IF you have any room after the large portions Rudys provides :)
I went today and got my usual fish center and chips. I will say I have always had a great meal, until today. My fish smelled and tasted like it was musty and I could not eat it. I dont know if it was just a bad batch but I know this is not the quality Im used to getting here. Disappointed but hopeful!!!
Great family friendly place!! Food is reasonably priced and freshly prepared! Everything is delicious! (And there are many options- not just seafood, not just fried!) Well organized system in place for ordering (far preferable to our pre Covid visit! Great job streamlining things!) Lots of water side tables for dining there- or take it to go!
The food is average to me but only because Im from the south and have had everything cooked anyway you could think off. If not for the food go for the view. My tinder date picked this place and Ive never had a better atmosphere to just enjoy someones else company in.
I was there on Saturday and usually my meal is awesome but this time it was terrible. My fish sandwich smelled and tasted musty, and wasnt edible. Ive never had this problem before and cant understand why it was so bad. I think Ill have to wait a while to try it again.
Always enjoyed Rudys but right now not so much. As we arrived we were greeted by a barrage of signs and when we saw the restaurant it was plastered with all kind of signs. We debated on even staying but we did as it wasnt busy at all for a Monday afternoon.Well big mistake as we had to wait for about a half hour for our food ugh.. and the food was so not up to par! Threw half of it away unfortunately 😢
This place has always been one of my favorites since i was a kid (im 60 now)..unfortunately after all these years the disappointment set in...our cheeseburg hots were burnt burgers and dry..the texas hot sause was not flavorable at all and hey for pete sake what happened to the salt on the salt potatoes? There was none!!! No more going to the loop for us...thank you rudys for the past your food was excellent...but as for today not so much!!!
Amazing views off the lake. The only reasons I can minus a star is because its only open half year and the prices have gone from decent to too high for the portions now and this started before covid. So we only go maybe 1-2x a year now instead of 3-4 because of the price and portions. On a positive note we like the system they have set up for covid. It makes for fast order and fast pickup. We drove in and out in less than 2 minutes. With that speedy system we may have to go again with the family.
Very good food! Ate in the car, too windy to sit outside. Fries were amazing. Lobster bisque was ok. Lobster roll was ok. Served on a hot dog bun? Not ok! I thought it could use a bit of seasoning and was a bit dry, but good. I think their version would have almost been better served warm from under a broiler. Love the rocks on the beach. Came home with a bunch!!! If go back!!!
We ordered online and had a pickup time scheduled for an hour later. We get there and it took over an hour to get our food. The biggest issue I have with this is they could easily call you and tell you we are running behind and give you a new time. This place is operating like the pandemic is brand new while most restaurants are starting to get back to normal they are still in Cuomo mode.
Set up is very easy for takeout. You can order over phone and pay with credit card. Ordered poutine which was ok but very salty. Haddock sandwich which was good. Hubby had hamburger hot and fried clams, again good. Theres just something about Rudys. Always make a few trips during their season.
Out of all the restaurants we could have chosen to have our Mother’s Day dinner, we chose Rudy’s Lakeside. We placed our order online knowing they would be busy. Placed the ‘ready’ time for 4:14pm, showed up to the restaurant at 4:15, were told they are running 45 minutes behind. At 5:01 I received the call our order is ready. They were not apologetic, the worst customer service I have received here ever. I usually like to frequent this restaurant a few times a year. This will be my last.
A bit overpriced for the portions. The restaurant benefits from great views of the lake and the tradition of bringing children to the shore to skip stones. Service is fast and they worked through the people waiting in line quickly. Im not a big eater but Ive almost always left there hungry and down $25 for 2 people. My sons chicken tender meal today cost $10 without beverage. The 4 tenders were small and the fries were a meager portion. Again the food coming out of the fryer tasted good. Just wish there was more of it.
The food is really good. Thats it. First, some items on the menu posted on their website are not available. Second, some of the staff that takes your order at the window are less than friendly and act like the customer is a bother. I traveled almost 50 miles to go there. First time I have been to Rudys in almost 30 years. I think it will be another 30 before I go back. Too bad.
My familys gone to Rudys since my mother was a child. We always recommend it to fish lovers and say that even though its a bit of a drive, the food is amazing for the prices and you never leave hungry.A definite recommend, try it at least once, I almost guarantee youll come back to eat again.
This is a great little place that has been running for many years. Its very nice and right on the water. It has a good little selection of seafood. If you are keto or gluten free you will have a hard time here as most things are breaded and fried. That does not make the food bad just not for everyone. I make sure to hit here every year as it has always been a part of a lot of good memories.
I have been a frequent customer to this location over the years, this visit however has turned me away. The food & staff were always great, as well as the prices. My return visit experience for this season however was much different. The prices went from good to terrible, like 3 × the price as before. The staff wasnt rude, but just not themselves. The portions of food also seemed to be cut by at least a 1/4 to a 1/3 of what they were before. I also waited much longer then normal, to even get my 3 item order. This has been an all around disappointment, I am sad to say. I looked forward to coming here every season.I am disappointed to say, I will not be returning.
Due to corona situation Rudys wanted you to place your order by phone and they call you when your order is ready. With that said we were told our order would take 10 --20 minutes.45 minutes later we got our call back.So we get our order. We order 2 fish sandwiches with extra tarter. They gave us NONE!!.Our order of fried mushroom consisted of 6 tiny little mushrooms a small macaroni salad it was served in a container our extra tarter sauce should have came in .Spent $30 and left hungry. And this was a Wednesday night and they didnt seem very busy.Definetly NOT worth the money I could have gotten a better fish sandwich at the dive bar up the street. Only thing Rudys has going for them is the location
Really great place to eat. Expect a long wait on weekends, but it is always worth it. Their Texas hot is a must try. And their fried haddock sandwich is the best around here. Eating outside, right by the lake is really nice. And all of the kids love to go down by the water and throw rocks after eating.
Had both lunch and dinner here on my most recent visit. I tried their fish and chips (fries), the New England clam chowder, shrimp cocktail, steamed clams and coffee. All the food was fresh and fantastic. We ate outside and had a great view of the lake.Oh, and their ice-cream is superb as well, just make sure you save room as their small dish serving is still a good sized portion.
The line is always long when I go- not a complaint, a sure sign this place is great. The staff keeps the line moving, the wait isnt ever terrible, the food has always been great, and you have Lake Ontario to look out on as you eat. If you have been wanting to check Rudys out, you wont be disappointed!
Location is everything. Beautiful view right on the shore of Lake Erie. While not the most organized restaurant, the employees are very nice and its also very nice to sit on the shore with an ice cream. We didnt have the food but it had the scent of the typical deep fried fare of many restaurants. The crowd seemed to very happy with it.
Came here in late September. We came on motorcycles. Great view. The food was amazing. They really need to do something about the bee situation in the outdoor seating area. It was a pretty cool day and there was an army of bees swarming me the entire time. I cant imagine what they are like in the heat of summer.
My wife requested Rudys for her birthday dinner... sadly, due to the current circumstances we couldnt eat in... ordered on-line and picked up. Her scallops were outstanding, and we have always loved the fries and burgers... ate at Brietbeck Park. Excellent as always... thanks to Rudys for making the best of this situation!
We had fish hot ;& a blue plate which is deep fried Haddock pieces & Scallops each were done perfect each came with fries and a side we each got mac salad- oh so good the sides are quite small but the portions of the fish were huge! We asked for tartar & lemons, which were so fresh & juicy. Of course the rolling lake, a family of kids swimming in the waves & scores of rock throwers and plenty of free souvenirs for Rock collectors & painters were the entertainment!
Although, it is not very creative to put a seasonal fish fry place by a lake, I did not mind the atmosphere too much, because I had never been there before. I think they change up the variety of the creativeness of the menu. They quite a choice for a outdoor fish fry. I also enjoyed the ice cream stand in walking distance from the fish fry.

2022-05-24Mostly deep fried fish and other fried items. It tastes great but I wish there was a baked fish option or more options for fish in its healthy form rather than only deep fried. I dont recommend the salmon burger which I had this time but I did like the lobster roll and their seafood salad sandwich. Prices are relatively high but they do have craft beer on tap and a nice view right on lake Ontario. I recommend this place if you like fried fish, casual dining and a nice atmosphere

2022-06-22A local and regional favorite, and loacted right on the water! Plenty of picnic tables and a covered pavilion make this a wonderful place to sit outdoors and enjoy your meal. Many options on the menu; seafood, hot dogs, burgers and everythings quite tasty. The hot dogs are delicious especially loving the meat sauce. It can get busy during peak meal times but its such a wonderful place to hang out by the water that you just dont want to leave.

2021-07-27Great place to sit out by the lake and have some tasty seafood; the fish is fantastic. Lots of tables, plenty of parking, and speedy service. If its crowded, you might miss the signs for ordering: line up on the right side of the building, place your order, and wait on the left side for your buzzer to go off.

2022-06-18Visited just yesterday. Food was fantastic as always. Prices are a bit out of control however. Inflation understandably having an impact to a degree. Not sure to this degree. One and done this season. If prices should come down perhaps again. $35 for fish and chips and fish and fried clams not worth the 28 mile drive.
