I had a great experience purchasing my first guitar from Rudys. I felt a little intimidated walking into the shop, but the staff put me at easy right away. They were warm, generous, knowledgeable, and answered my bazillion nubby questions (Nates the best!). It was a joyful experience - exactly what I was hoping for - people who love guitars genuinely interested in helping you find a guitar you will love.
Rudy’s is AMAZING! The sales staff are friendly, and so very helpful. They are knowledgeable, and share that knowledge with you to make sure that you make an informed decision, while having a great experience as well.Their gear is absolutely TOP tier, and the store is clean, organized, and absolutely beautiful.I truly would recommend Rudy’s to anyone looking for a great guitar, with good prices, and guaranteed amazing service.
I made an appointment because I was told to not a problem, I came in to browse and see if anything called to us and the gentleman tells us before we’ve even seen anything that appointments are for people who are going to make a purchase. Ok fine but the pretentious, rude, smug attitude of the staff definitely put a damper on our experience and a bit of our day. 10 out of 10 would not recommend.
The staff member whos in charge for the acoustic room actually said I can kick you out for that for asking another customer how did she like the guitar she was playing. Also for some reason he thought I should buy a guitar because he was doing his job to show me and let me play a few guitars. Seems to forget whos the customer and whos the service person. I came to ny with the intention of checking and probably buying an instrument. Now I know it wont be at Rudys. Try TR Crandell or Retrofret Vintage instead. Best shops ever, down to earth people, amazing guitars, the owners are super nice, and they just let you play whatever you wish for how long you wish. Yes, even the 25k dangelicos and Martins! Got the most warm welcome in both of them, without being asked are you gonna buy something today?, just grab and play anything you want! also in these, and every other normal store, they dont see a problem with two people together, something that in Rudys is against store policy.
Cool collection of guitars but the staff were honestly backhanded even towards me (I’m a kid) and I was fine until they WOULDNT even let me try out guitars. Like come on..do you expect me to just buy a guitar without letting me try? And I would assume that they would be a little nicer since I’m a young lad. Not worth your time, sorry.
I had a fantastic experience researching guitars at Rudy’s. The staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable; their mission is to ensure that the buyer is satisfied with their purchase, not to sell the most expensive guitar. They listen to your criteria and needs, and will narrow down their vast selection to the best options. I spent the most time with Nate and Zeke; both of them gave their undivided attention and expertise toward helping me find the right guitar. My only criticism is that some staff members were not wearing masks when I entered the store, although they did put masks on when I requested that they do so.
One of the best shops in the country! Love these guys. Everyone is knowledgeable and ready to help. Nate was awesome. Helpful, friendly, knowledgeable. They are doing a great job of making the best of the COVID situation and helping you get what you need and want when you need it safely and quickly.
Love them ever since their store was in midtown. Been going there for years. I have purchased both guitars and amplifiers from Rudys and have been quite satisfied. The repair shop is non pariel and Gordy is worth coming in to talk about guitars. Indeed, it is a guitarist paradise!
This is an amazing store! I was pleased to find a nearly brand new Martin room, and had a wonderful chat with the acoustic guitar Zeke. If I was in the market to purchase while we were there I works have bought from them. No pressure, super welcoming, very knowledgeable.
I was hoping to pick up a slide for my new CBG, but wasnt able to find one I liked that fit my fat fingers. None the less, the folks there were exceptionally helpful, and I truly appreciated their taking the time to open a few packages for me to try some on - especially for such a small ticket item. I also really enjoyed looking at the beautiful guitars they have - mostly beyond my budget at this time, but..... some day..... Anyway, fantastic store for both the serious and curious guitarist.
I went to Rudys for the first time ever to get my Rickenbacker 4003s bass set up. The tech Neil set it up great and fixed the issue I was having with the mutes and they feel so much better. I will now be bringing all my guitars back to Rudys to be serviced by Neil. The store is stunning and the staff are very nice. I look foward to coming back!
Rudy’s is an awesome shop. I went in to purchase a telecaster and the guy who “helped” me was awful, sadly. He came over to seemingly monitor my handling of the guitar. When I was setting it back, he grabbed it and I said it’s a beautiful guitar to which he responded, “good, now you know.” I’ll chalk it up to the fact he was either new or having a bad day, but I left and bought the guitar at TR directly afterwards. Hopefully my next visit will be more in line with the high standard of service you expect from a great store.
Rudys Music Shop is by far the best guitar shop I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Their staff is extremely helpful, personable, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. The guitars are beautifully setup and they carry some of the most stunning instruments I have ever seen/heard. I dont plan on shopping anywhere else for my next guitar or ukulele. I cant thank the Rudys staff enough for being so accommodating in helping me find the perfect guitar for my needs. They are simply amazing.
I have just been there and came across such kindness and willingness to help that you would not normally expect from a store at that caliber.Gordon went through a lot of effort just to be accurate on questions that I have asked him about a guitar - that I have bought years ago from a friend of mine - and he delivered.Besides, I must mention that the store offers a respectful amount of vintage guitars and the many instruments are maintained excellent. The store offers 5 different spots to test instruments all with good amps.Enjoy!Itay.
Dropped by with my guitar playing friends after hearing good things but had a pretty bad experience. The selection of guitars was good but every instrument required staff supervision to play and it took us a long time to find a staff member willing to help. My friends went to try some acoustic guitars and I played some electrics. After trying a few, one of which I was quite interested in, I went to check in on my friends and a staff member came over to tell us if we were not going to make a purchase we should limit it to 5 more minutes. I was shocked at how rude his tone was. I frequently visit guitar stores and have never been asked to leave before. It was the middle of the day, the store wasnt busy, and as far as I could tell there were no other customers we were affecting. Like I said, I was actually interested in one of the guitars but with customer service like that Ill take my business somewhere else.
I discovered Rudys about half a year ago and was so excited to have done so. This place is stocked with wonderful instruments and folks that really know (and care about) their stuff. I recently had a guitar worked on by Jeremy and couldnt be happier. I HIGHLY recommend Rudys.
Has an incredible range of new and vintage guitars. Shame the vintage stuff is mainly kept behind the large counter but theyre willing to help you to look at stuff if you want. Spec sheets are available too which shows theyve checked over each instrument (dates on pots etc). Great shop!
The staff here are so incredibly sexist and patronising, immediately speaking down as soon as a younger woman walks into the store, laughing at customers, and frankly even going as far as to insult. Appalling customer service and genuinely horrible behaviour in general.
I had the pleasure of stumbling across this fantastic shop while on a business trip. The staff was among the friendliest Ive ever encountered. I was even given the honour of meeting and chatting with Rudy, himself. The man is a legend and treats you like an old friend. He told stories and gave details about the luthiers and instruments he presented. The selection of guitars was amazing. So many one of a kind and rare pieces. Its almost like walking into an art museum, only youre allowed to take things off the walls and give it a try. If youre in Manhattan and you love guitars you should 100% check out one of Rudys shops. It was an experience for me, more than just walking into a guitar store.
Having been a huge admirer of Rudy Pensa’s guitars since watching Mark Knopfler step out with the first MK guitar with Dire Straits in the 1988 I eventually pushed the boat out and ordered a t shirt! Not exactly the most influential customer! However after a few online ordering complications with web browsers and shipping to the UK, Fran and Rudy made me feel like i had ordered the most top of the tree custom of guitars, they sorted it out personally and my T Shirt arrived in days!Absolutely first class and with service like that, it is no wonder Rudy Pensa and his team have the stella reputation for excellence they deserve. Thanks guys I sport the Rudy’s Music logo with pride and I will be back one day for that holy grail, the MK Classic....Matt
Rudy and his crew will make you feel like family! The most friendly and helpful staff that Ive ever met. When it comes to guitar knowledge and history, they know just about everything you could ever hope to know. If youre looking to check out some of the coolest vintage guitars in NYC you have to go to Rudys.
A must-visit for any musicians visiting NYC. Great staff, decent prices, and can ship anywhere. I was in town for a weekend tourist trip, ended up coming home with a new Fender. I cant recommend this place enough. I never would have guessed a music store would be the high point of a family vacation to NYC.
Rudys has been a go to place for me for 35 years. If youre in the market for a quality instrument there is no better place. Rudys operates with the highest ethical standards. Buying an expensive vintage instrument is a very big deal. You need to have absolute faith in the people youre dealing with. Go there, you will be amazed and in love with what they have.
What a store for guitars! I stopped by just to see what they had while visiting NYC, and there were more incredible guitars than I knew what to do with. They just dont stock anything that isnt great... And theyve got all sorts of different acoustic brands, including rarer ones like Froggy Bottom. The staff are super knowledgeable and helpful, too. I didnt plan on buying anything, but I walked out with an Eastman that has served me well for years
Brought my son into Rudy’s in SoHo, not expecting to purchase anything. He’s a new player and he’d wanted to try an electric guitar as he’d only played acoustics. He was enamored by the sounds and we were both extremely happy with the advice, knowledge and service provided by Rob. He wasn’t the least bit pushy and let us explore and make decisions at our own pace. We ended up buying a Fender Player Series Strat and a cool little Fender amp as well. I recommend the experience of Rudy’s as well as the product and especially the staff. Any guitar player would be glad if they stopped in, to at least check it out.
The best guitar store around. Youll feel like youre in a museum (rather than a big-box store). The staff knows all there is to know about new and vintage guitars and amps. Most of their guitars are high-end, boutique, or vintage instruments that are well worth the investment. Dont forget to go upstairs and check out their amazing collection of jazz guitars.
Been coming here since 1985. somehow Rudy always remembers me by name, introduced me to MK, and built me a beautiful Pensa in 2001 (yes, it took 16 years to save up for it). Its a regular stop when Im back in the city. Got 4 guitars there and counting...Set your expectations--great guitars, great acoustics, smart staff. But its busy, tight, narrow, and not ideal for the impatient high maintenance guest. So give yourself some time, take your time, soak it in, and enjoy one of the few remaining truly independent guitar shops in NYC.
Theres a reason why Rudys is rated so high. Its because they are awesome and have excellent selection and repeat customers who are happy. I will definitely be back again and again and I recommend this music store to anyone. They will also get you anything they dont have as they have connections.
A so great professional team !!! 👌 Thank you for the time spent with my young boy Thomas Hendriks 😉 ! We are from France, but we will come back !!! 👍We had the chance to meet Rudy and his so nice team ! I recommend this beautiful music store ! Once again THANK YOU ! 👍👌🤩
Rudys has great selection of expensive guitars, thats what people who shop here are looking for. i went in to take a look at their selection. my hands were very dry earlier in the day and i had some musk oil on my hands in order to keep them moisterized. out of consideration for the establishment i was lighly plucking the stings while they were on the wall to get an idea of the tonewoods. one of the employees there told me i couldnt do that as he was afraid i would drop the guitar to the floor which to me was nonsensical, as there is no way that upwards of 10 foot-pounds of force would be applied in that case. ive never been in any music store that said that to me and if this employee knew what he was doing he would have understood that this method was actually the safest way of testing the guitar as to avoid getting musk oil on the expensive tonewoods
Went in here looking for an experience that would be better or at least comparable to the music zoo in farmingdale li. Everything in this store is locked down. Ask to play something and youre questioned like a child. You have to have a certain appearance to be considered serious in this place. Why have a music store if youre expected not to try stuff out? Doesnt matter how well you play either. Play too long and they ask you to turn it down until you up and leave.
A magical place with a history. Rudis Pensa is the man who together with John Suhr created the most versatile Pensa-Suhr guitars, long before Suhr was a brand on its own. The first electric guitar produced by them was called the “R Custom” in 1982. Together with Mark Knopfler they created a crossover between a Stratocaster and a Les Paul: The Pensa “MK”. Finished in early 1988, it was completely built by John Suhr who worked at the Pensa music shop at the time, before deciding to leave Pensa’s workshops and work for Fender as a Senior Master Builder.
Rudys is great - I shared stories with the guys who were knowledgable and friendly. I also got my hands on a beautiful 61 Gibson SG Reissue and was left to alone to play without any hassle or hard selling. I will be highly recommending Rudys to all my muso friends back home in England!
I went to rudys 2 weeks ago and had a chance to play some great Basses there and staff was very kind Thanks Lucas for helping me. I ended up buying a used 64 Jazz bass and I am very happy with it and I was stunned when I saw The 3 Rickenbackers they had :) I even bought a Fender Strat for my friend. So overall it is a great Store. You should Stop by.
Ok Rudy himself, awesome guy. the place, feels like rock n roll should. however, as relatively new guitarist most of the guitars were out of my price range. They had some axes within my range but not what I originally had my heart set on. however, Rudy was such a charismatic salesman that I almost ended up buying a guitar anyway. As a store, second to none if youve got the money and know-how. A great place if you want a slice of rock history. however, if youre the new kid on the block you could end up walking away with a considerably lighter wallet and a guitar you dont necessarily want. But go anyway for the experience. By proxy, Ive shaken Santanas hand. and Richards. and countless others. thats gotta be worth it.
My recent experience at Rudys was exceptional. The staff (and Dave, my sales person) were knowledgeable, personable and low pressure. They completely get what customers need - facts and space to make a decision! The midtown store, as always, was clean, organized and loaded with gorgeous guitars. I walked away with my first Martin, a D-18, despite living in NJ and having a number of local options for purchasing the same instrument. Buy your strings and picks at the national chains and guitar supermarkets. Buy your guitars at Rudys!!!! Its a no brainer.
Rudy is a Legend. The store itself is such a music landmark on 48th st. The store might not be for the fickle or amateur musician with pricing, but the pieces that are sold are each a piece of work. I myself am a huge fan of Rudys Amp Room, as well as Mesa Boogie Manhattan. I was there for the opening and the Andy Timmons Masterclass, and honestly the sheer selection of amps of all classes, voicings and power ranges is insane. Where else can you honestly find a place that STOCKS whole product lines of custom Mesas, Orange amps, 65 amps, Fender Custom Shop guitars, PRS amps and real Bogners?

2022-05-27Rudys Music is an incredible guitar store with friendly, knowledgeable staff and an incredible history. They have a lot of rare and hard to find items in stock from the big names to some exceptional smaller custom manufacturers. The service was great, and the guys really went the extra mile for me with the pickups I bought.

2022-06-07Great guitar store in NYC with wide range of selection of electric and acoustic guitars. They even have dedicated sections for Martin and Taylor guitars. Recently had my Fender Strat setup by them and they did a good job. Highly recommended.

2022-08-17Rude staff and they know nothing about customer service or pro level instruments. I’ve been to shops all over the US big and small. They found out I was a pro player then just pushed a new guy and told him to give me the most expensive instrument. I was about to purchase two nice instruments that were overpriced that I really liked. I asked to use the restroom and to ring me up. They said that they do not have one. So I took my money and went to Massachusetts. Found a lovey little shop w great service and knowledgeable staff. Nothampton MA has a few great little guitar shops w much better selection and service than NYC!

2022-08-22It was such a good experience. Went in looking for the Taylor gs Mini and they had a few options that I was able to try in the acoustic room while Jacob was ready to answer my questions, he even played a bit so I could hear the tonal differences between the tone woods in the different models. I ended up getting the Koa Plus model.

2022-06-29I was honestly surprised at how little the staff seemed to know about the guitar effects I was looking at (Boss Digital Delays). I actually had to explain the line-up and differences to the guy behind the counter. He was however rather quick to brag on the original 60s Jaguar, and the Flying V they have though. I live in Austin, Texas. We have a few old guitars here as well. I was at the old Rudys years ago and it was a great experience. Now, it just seems like a museum with no vitality - a monument to what was and not what could be.

2022-05-10Joe Wilga is the best guitar builder you will find in NYC. His knowledge and wisdom are beyond his years, and his passion for his craft is contagious. His attention to detail is second to none, and the end product is an inspiring guitar that will make you a better player. Thanks for everything Joe!

2022-08-26I flew from UK with my wife and Child to visit Rudys to buy a cool as heck Shell Pink relic strat. As soon as we landed we went straight to Rudys ,and it was closed, it was their none working day and i hadnt checked on the website. So not a problem, we decided to go the next day. We walked a long way and got there at 10:40 (they only open at 11am) so we waited outside. it was February and it was -11c (12.2 F). We where not invited in with it being so cold, which is fine but I did get some sarcastic comment about letting them get to work without me, wife and child queueing, what is my gripe??, 11am a guy unlocks the door but after watching us for 20 mins doesnt say welcome or invite us in, just walks away from the door (so we let our selves in). I just want Rudys to know this is what made me decide not to spend $5000 on a shell pink relic strat. i know now why they are called Rudys - because they are rude.
