My wife and I went to the Cathedral for The First Responders Mass commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11/2001 attack on the Twin Towers. The Mass was preceded by a multi-agency Honor Guard, and the Gates Police Department Pipe and Drum Corp. A Ladder Truck from The Rochester Fire Department and one from the Ridge-Culver Fire Department held a U.S. Flag suspended from their extended ladders in front of the Cathedral. Uniformed Members and Retirees from many local Police and Fire Departments were in attendance.
Ive only been to the Cathedral twice, once to see it and attend noon mass and then again for a ceremony. Its a beautiful building even if it isnt as large as I first imagined it to be. They have a little store inside that sells seasonal missals, prayer cards, and other miscellaneous items. They have a beautiful pipe organ. If youre coming for an event, it pays to arrive early as parking goes quickly and the Cathedral is not in the nicest neighborhood.
My mother grew up in this church. The day she died (6-24-19) i stopped in with my daughter to say a prayer and found the cathedral to be locked all around. A nice worker asked me what I needed and I explained my reason for being there. He let us right in and stayed back. It was so beautiful with the empty church and just my daughter and I. We yelled I love you grandma! The echos made me break down in tears. I am not a particularly spiritual guy but in that moment...i sure felt close to something. My recommendation for this place clearly is for the kindness of one man at the right place at the right time with a good heart. I think his name was steve but am not 100%. Thank you!!!!
Went for confession there for the first time (updating the review - this was pre Covid). It is beautiful in a modern way Ill, Ill say that. But I really dont like it. There are so many Gothic churches in the area instead and I suppose I prefer the reminder of a time when Catholicism was held more seriously by its laity. But being here just for half an hour reminded me of my many reasons only going to the Latin Mass (TLM at St. Kateri in Irondequoit).I was shocked at the blatant irreverence shown by people there. It isnt a party hall. There was a wedding prep going on and I wondered why the priest attending to them didnt speak up. Why get married in a church if you dont even acknowledge Christs presence? Why get married in a church if youre going to treat it like a dance hall? Why bother getting married in a church when the ladies couldnt be bothered to dress modestly? Im not a prude but Im not kidding when I say some of them were in club wear. Would you dress like that to a court house? The entire wedding party was loud and irreverent even before the altar and the people there who were OBVIOUSLY PRAYING. And I along with so many were there for confession, again, obviously praying. They had no regard for anyone else and again, priest did nothing. I get it. Its exciting. But its the house of God.The altar weirded me out. Its new-agey and not at all focused on the Bessed Sacrament. What the heck is the point of a church if Christ isnt the focal point?Thank you, but no thank you.
Welcoming Church Community. Friendly Christian family. 🙏🔥💖 Catholic but they welcome all denominations 📖🙏🔥💖Many different ministries that offer services to the Community in need. 📖🙏💞 They have a caring loving Rector. All for his Community family and touching as he reaches beyond the doors of mother Church.
I was born into this church in 1943. I attended the Catholic school. I moved away when I was 20.I recently came back for a visit. I was never so amazed at the way the church building has changed. I often wondered who came up with a stupid idea to change the sweet feeling, of the inside of this church? No more pews, but what amounts to padded folding chairs. Poor Bishop Hogan must be rolling around in his grave. And the cost of all this utter ugliness, must have been out of site. And yet you couldnt keep the school open. I know deep in my heart that there are many others who feel this way. The newer families didnt know what was given up.The priest that decided to change this beautiful church, probably isnt even there anymoe. Probably off trying to change other churches. If, he is still there, you should feel really ashamed!!!!
Beautiful Cathedral with comfy seats and kneelers. Weve been twice for Mass, but our third time was for a Scouting Religious Emblems Ceremony. Fathers Tomasso and McGrath did a great job along with Alison LeChase, Linda Mehlenbacher and everyone else. Thank you so much for recognizing Scouts in our area!
I was baptized here then went to grammer school across the street. I remember Bishop Casey in his glorious satin robes coming downstairs to the dressing room to bless out kindergarten class before making our stage debuts (I was a cinnemon bear in the 1965 Christmas pagent). High Latin Masses and 1st Communions, the Stations of the Cross and the scent of incense and the ringing of bells as I beat my small fist to my chest are as clear to me now some 50 years later. Last but not least I recall as if just this moning the powerful voice of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen echoing off the butresses of this grand Catherdal saying: Show me your hands. Do they have scars from giving? Show me your feet. Are they wounded in service? Show me your heart. Have you left a place for divine love?

2022-02-19Thank God Tradition is back at the Cathedral. Its time to add a statue of the sacred heart, and a statue of Our Lady wearing a veil instead of a headband. Fr. v Lieshouts homilies are spiritually helpful and the Liturgy of the Eucharist is traditional. Hopefully an altar rail will be installed as part of the upcoming renovations.

2022-05-01Its still impressive. And the Bishop was inspiring. Its obviously an older bldg in need of some attention. At the top of the ceiling is a big gorgeous arc. Missing 2 of its many lightbulbs. Sad The seats were full of confirmation candidates from 5 diocese Catholic schools, sponsors, and relatives...but the churchseemed smaller than when I was a kid.....how can that be. But the most important part was perfect,.the 14 to16 yr olds, prepped to dedicateTheir lives to loving their Saviour,Jesus Christ.....The fact that our grandson.RJ was in that historic cathedral , a sentry to his faith was absolutely amazing ...we were so happy and so proud.I pray that YOUwill bless these young people, dear Lord, and keep them safe from all harm as they forge ahead into adulthood. When times are tough and they are faced with choices please let them choose the path that most pleases YOU. Amen

2022-02-18I was a member of Sacred Heart Parish from 1956 through 1963 when I left for the convent. I attended the consecration of that magnificent high marble altar as a seventh grader and attended the first restored Easter Vigil. I saw it recently, and I wept. Bishop Casey had such a brilliant flare for the liturgy, I hope he hasnt looked down from heaven to see what happened to it now.

2022-04-14As always, the annual Chrism Mass was a beautiful and prayerful experience. Obtaining the Holy Oils for Holy Trinity was different this year.

2021-11-18With the arrival of their new rector, Father Peter Van Lieshout great things are happening here! You wont hear questionable things in homilies or Father Jamrd Martin quoted anymore. And confession is now multiple times a week instead of just one day!
