I have to change few trains to go to curry hill. It was our anniversary and instead of going to the really high end restaurant we read about this restaurant in Eater, and decided to give it a try.First of all the area is dead on Sunday afternoon . We were the only ones in the restaurant at 2:30, so we kind of liked that. We read a lot about this restaurant so we were prepared what to expect. Decor will get zero point. serving staff will get all five points. They were very helpful, provided suggestions. I read in few review that staff was rude, which was not the case for us.but sometimes language could be the barrier.Food was excellent . we ordered two appetizers . And both arrived the way it should. hot and delicious . In main course we decided to order what most of the reviewers were raving about, chicken kori gassi, Dumaloo, and I have to have dal. Kori gassi chicken was good but I did not find wow factor. Dum aloo potatoes were bit sweet for me, but recipe is surely authentic.no tomatoes or onions and garlic. Kashmiri Pundits dont use either in their cuisine. Food was real hot the way it should be. we were offered Kheer ( kind of rice pudding) for dessert cold thick and absolutely delicious . And I dont like milk or white rice. Will I come back to this restaurant? As I said its trip for me but yes , absolutely. I still need to try their goat and lamb in my main course.
I always pick up a mango lassi from here because it’s the best in the area, but I tried the lamb biryani and malai kofta and they were both amazing. The lamb biryani had a generous serving of the meat and the malai kofta had the perfect creaminess and spices. NY Times described this place as the middle ground between Junoon and Haandi and I couldn’t agree more.
After spending 6 plus hours in Central Park, drinking with my friends, we decided to go to Sahib for dinner. We reached here at about 8:45 pm on a Saturday night, and found seating right away for 6 of us. The restaurant was moderately busy.Music was too loud and we couldnt really speak, so we requested our hostess to reduce the volume and she kindly obliged. We ordered a couple of things but the Chicken Biryani was the winner. Really good taste, but the price to portion ratio could be a little better. The curries we ordered were good too, and so were the desserts.Service was excellent and Id definitely visit again!
Sahib was an excellent find for lunch. I enjoyed a wonderful buffet at a great price. Flavors were perfect. Tandoori chicken was the best. The dosa stuffed with potatoes was a nice addition. Service was spot on. I want to go back for a try from the menu. Ambience was rustic and simple. Nice way to relax after shopping at the Spice Corner.
We love this place! In the winter they bring you a soup shooter and during warm weather it’s mango juice. A few times we’ve ordered Kari Gassi and naan. The garlic naan is out of this world delicious! And today we tried Dhaniwal Korma - a chicken in yogurt sauce that was so tender and flavorful and not spicy. The service is fast and attentive.
This low key Indian restaurant has yummy dishes for all diets and needs, and tasty starters. The eggplant fritters and okra were delicious! Although only one of the bathrooms was functional and the service was slowed down by a large table near us, it was worth it! Note: this place does not serve alcohol and is not BYOB.
Been on the lookout for good Indian food in Manhattan since our move here last year. Sadly, I ended up in a neighborhood where people seems to be afraid of spice, and the few Indian restaurants catered to Western palate. (Oh my god, is that salt? TOO SPICY!!!)I meant to take a photo of the veggie samosas, but I got too excited and finished before I remembered to take a photo. It’s hard not to since the samosas and almost everything they serve here are made in-house.- Food is A+++- Friendly staff- Clean facilities- Interior decor is simple but you can tell they’ve paid attention to details- Did I mention the food is amazing?
We went there for dhai bhallay, gol gappay and aloo kai pakoray and the food quality wasnt good.Im originally from Pakistan and none of these items come even close to what they should taste like. Moreover, the quantity of these items could bei increased given the prices.
By far the best Indian food Ive had in my four years in New York! They even called to check about my allergies and the food was so good! My wife absolutely loved her Dhaniwala Korma and they really did honour my request for the spiciest biriyani! The crew is very pleasant and attentive and the food is authentic and delicious, takes me back to my childhood! Very good portions, comfortable and not wastefully excessive!
Wonderful food, portion size, and service. Felt very safe from staff, and tables spaced with a good distance. This is our second time here and Vijay made sure we had a wonderful evening out, always attentive to what we needed, the kind of service that makes us want to come back. Helped us forget about the pandemic for a time. Thank you.
Went here today for the lunch buffet after wanting to try their food for a while. It was scrumptious! The buffet was stocked with lots of delicious meat and vegetarian options that were hot and fresh. A sweet older man came around to bring baskets of naan, some sort of filled crepe, delicious chicken drumsticks, and this wonderful bowl of crispy rice! Our water was refilled promptly and the bathrooms were clean and smelled nice. The buffet was a great price and so delicious.
My partner went today the atmosphere was great greeter was polite and welcoming. The food was amazing the presentation was great flavor profiles were perfect in balance portion sizes were enough to share and it price point was reasonable definitely will frequent this restaurant again
We came in for lunch and the restaurant was empty so we asked if we could sit further inside the restaurant because the door was being left open and it was cold. The elderly gentleman who sat us said no and told us to sit down there which was the closest table to the door. So we sat down and kept our jackets on during the entire lunch. Then came to ordering the food. The waiter was a little rude and short with us when we asked questions about what sides come with what entrees. Typically basmati rice is served which curries but not here at Sahib which is a bit odd but fine we ordered a side of rice with peas (they sprinkle 4 or 5 peas on top the rest is plain). We order chicken tikka masala, chicken makhani, and their award winning biryani. Presentation wise everything was fantastic and the chicken tikka and chicken makhani were superb. The biryani on the other hand was basically inedible. It looked amazing with the top being encased in a perfectly cooked dough. It looked beautiful so I was very excited to eat it however when I brought it closer to me I immediately recognized the pungent smell coming from the biryani even before breaking the top layer of dough. It was drowned in saffron flavoring and every bite just tasted like saffron and heat, nothing else. It was very sad because it was cooked perfectly but inedible because of all the saffron. It was like eating flowery perfume. All in all it was an ok lunch but not worth 100 dollars especially when I couldnt even eat the food I ordered.
Well being from India and having lived in New York, the heart craves for Indian food once in a while with the awareness that there are excellent options around! It took me 4 years to go to Sahib after having moved to the US and I was surprised! I have had countless Indian buffets but this one by far has to be the best! The food is authentic and that doesn’t mean spicy! The taste wasn’t Indo-American but Indian, and had a fresh feeling to it! They had by far the best buffet I have anywhere in the US! Recommend it completely! You shouldn’t be missing this! The service staff is very warm & hospitable!
This place won my heart hands down and there are three reasons for it- 1. the buffet had options from all parts of India and variety of options for vegetarians and non-vegetarians 2. Each and every item was cooked to perfection with authentic Indian touch 3. Serving staff is very warm and welcoming and prompt with their service.Do visit if you love Indian cuisine or if you want a perfect introduction buffet of Indian cuisine.
Well the food was nice and flavorful but kashmiri Rista was not kashmiri Rista. Ristas are spherical balls not discs and its not made in an onion, tomato puree none of these ingredients are added. So please if its your own version of Rista then its all good but dont add the word kashmiri to it, if you dont know the recipe. Galawati kebab were normal kebabs. The word Galawati comes from Galawati meaning something that melts and it did not, its a recipe from Lucknow. Please dont deceive people in the name of food. If you want to serve a particular recipe research about it. p.s I am a kashmiri and I am pretty sure your kashmiri Rogan Josh is not even kashmiri Rogan Josh. I have have had these dishes most of all my life. If needed I can share the authentic recipe.
What I thought was going to be a pleasant experience with my family didn’t turn out to be the case. Before we got to the restaurant, we called to confirmas the restaurant was closing in an hour and asked if it was okay to come in and if they would still accommodate us. The person on the phone said they would,so we went there. After placing the order, the food that we requested for medium in terms of spice came out really spicy that I felt like my insides were burning. We still tried our best to eat the food as we were extremely hungry at that point. 10 mins into our meal being served the manager asked if we would like our cheque. We felt like we were unceremoniously getting kicked out and hassled. We told the manger it was unacceptable and they shouldn’t have taken us if they were so willing to kick us out during our meal. Instead the manager was grinning and defending poor customer service and terrible quality food. I will not be going to this establishment again or recommend it to anybody after this experience.
Oh. My. Goodness. The best Indian food weve ever eaten and its not even close. The service was amazing, the waiter explained to us three Americans what the dish was, how it was prepared, and some fun facts. The service was the best Ive ever had, it wasnt that busy but youd think we were the only people there! I will 100% be coming back and bringing people back with me.
The Indian food here was excellent. We had saag paneer and a basic chicken curry both of which were very. The bread was not the best I have had but also very. We asked for a spicy and it definitely came very hot so make sure you do want it hot if you ask for it spicy.
I came here on a Sunday night and it was relatively empty. My friend familiar with the Indian restaurants in the area recommended it for Northern Indian food. The curry was delicious and the serving was quite generous. Would highly recommend the jalapeno naan if youre okay with spicy.
This restaurant is the one I always prefer. I visit many restaurants but to this place I keep coming back again and again. The crew is very professional and the cooking they place on your table is so delicious. I never decline to have a nice meal in this place. I highly recommend this place.
Spectacular tasting food and especially bravo on the extra spicy murgh vindaloo. I usually get medium spicy when asked very spicy so this was a nice surprise. It was so spicy that I could throat sing afterward. Paneer naan and mango lassi were amazing. Overall, 10/10.
Good service and pretty good food. They serve complimentary tomato soup and desert both of which were delicious. Main course had several options and they didnt disappoint us on our choices. Portions were small though so we had to reorder some items for our family. The do not serve alcohol and dont do BYOB either.
Seriously a solid choice for a good Indian lunch in the area. Food was high quality, tasty, clean, and a wide selection of options at the buffet. Also you cannot beat that price. They came around with fresh tandoori chicken and a dosa for you as well, all included in the cost. I forwent the Naan for a pappadam, no charge. Service was friendly and speedy. I’ll be back.
Exceptional Indian FoodWe have traveled to north and south India and the food at Sahib rivals the best we have tasted. We followed some of the suggestions in the NY Times review of Sahib. Although the eggplant fritters were not distinctive in taste, the Manglorean Coconut Chicken was tender in a silken, delicately spiced sauce. The Rogan Josh, (Kashmir Lamb Curry) was the best we have ever tasted anywhere. The lamb was meaty and tender and absorbed the beautiful red sauce surrounding it. The Chicken Biryani, served in a copper pot covered with a drape of baked dough, was served steaming, perfumed with spice. The dessert, Mango Kulfi, is a frozen dairy dessert like nothing we have ever tasted. The mouthfeel of this creamy delight borrows the best of the attributes of ice cream, gelato, and frozen custard, but is kept at a precise temperature to not become too loose or too hard. It was heavenly. The staff was extremely attentive, especially the manager, Prahlad who came over to our table often to ask if everything was to our satisfaction. The atmosphere is basic, with bare wooden accents, but they have good ambient gentle lighting and the noise level is mid to low. We will definitely return to try other things on the menu.
The restaurant is nice , clean and comfortable, the service is good . It was an almost empty restaurant, given that its neighboring restaurants vere full to capacity . We soon found out why, it has very ordinary, almost tasteless food. Thats saying a lot about Indian food which usually has some taste. Skip this place and go to Chhote Nawab or any other of the.many Indian restaurants in the neighborhood.
A must visit- the neighborhood around this restaurant has many other Indian restaurants so it can be hectic at times to decide a place- please try out this place first, food had authentic Indian taste, amazing amazing food!! A must must try- must try their ras malai- I havent had such in a decade of living in NY- will be coming back soon!
I ate a Saturday buffet here. The fare was your standard indian buffet - two vegetables, one paneer dish and rice+dal. They had chana and bhature as well. However the bhature was more of a kulcha. It was fluffed up big like a puri which is how it should be. They also had a dosa and mamra as side dishes. I wish they put a little more effort with respect to the taste and overall experience of a customer here. I like to see innovation in food and that was missing.
They are a classy establishment with delicious food at reasonable prices. Sahib is conveniently located on 28th and Lexington Ave in Curry Hill. The vibe there is cozy chic with a hint of upscale. Their lunch buffet is so bountiful with choices for meat eaters, vegans, and vegetarians alike. They even include dessert as part of the buffet! Their staff is very nice, welcoming, and professional. Your water glass is always filled and are greeted like family from their hellos and comfortable small talk and classy touches like an appetizer of a tandoori chicken drumstick, warm naan, and dosa. I highly recommend you go there and hope that this place will remain open, considering a new restaurant is always opening in a previous establishments place.
Nice place to have lunch buffet. I enjoyed a wonderful buffet at a great price $13+ tax (may chnage). I am a vegetarian still found plenty of options they served salad, onion pakoda, Bhel, mini masala dosa, chole bhature, 2 Sabjis, Naan, peas pulav and Gulab jamun (yes they do have various options for non veg as well). Food taste was good and ambience was simple. hotel staff was cooperative and provided great service. No Wi-Fi
Overall thoughts: great carbs. The biryani comes in a clay pot and is covered with bread to keep the warmth. The bread itself is fluffy and chewy. The biryani is fragrant and comes with a really great yogurt sauce.Chicken chettinad is incredibly flavorful and delicious. Pairs very well with garlic naan.
Restaurant was great and food was delicious!! We sat down and were immediately taken care of. Wine was a great pour and the food was unreal. We got the chicken tikka masala and the lamb Rogan josh with sides of rice. The spice in the tikka masala was perfection, and the lamb was so tender. After we had this warm cheese/dough ball for dessert which was covered in rose syrup. UNBELIEVABLE! Best dessert I’ve had in a while.
Came here for dinner and I was really impressed with the food. We ordered garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, and a few other dishes. Ive wandered into many different Indian restaurants here and this is by far my favorite food. So much flavor and somehow its different in every bite in the best way.
Had a craving for some curry and came here after checking out some reviews. The restaurant interior is clean, though the Indian music in the background was playing rather choppily. As with a lot of Indian restaurants during lunch time we could pick between a buffet service or a la carte, we went for a la carte though Im pretty sure everyone else in the restaurant was doing the buffet. Will have to try the buffet next time.We had 2 starters, one a deep fried battered eggplant and the other was the usual pyramidal shaped samosa. Both were good and well presented, as were all their dishes for that matter. For the main we selected chicken Rogan Gosh and a goat Kosha. Originally, we thought it wasnt too spicy, but as time wore on the sweat started pouring off! So, even the menu items not marked as spicy are reasonably spicy, but are flavourful without losing your taste buds.We had some rice and garlic naan bread as sides. The naan were very crisp and thinner than most naans Ive had, very tasty, crunchy and soft.We finished off with 2 balls of Jumin, for dessert. I was a bit full but glad I ate it as it offset the spiciness pretty quickly.Definitely one to come back to.Update. Went back for lunch one weekend and had the buffet and its very good value, tasty and the food is replenished frequently. Now I see why most people just went for the buffet.
I enjoyed a nice Northern Indian meal and good service seated in upscale dining decor on a relatively quiet Sunday night. The server seemed to really know the menu and hopped into the kitchen to make sure to correctly answer a question a vegetarian at the table had about one of the dishes. Immediately after ordering, the server brought a warm, aptly seasonal, pumpkin drink that was and papadum and chutneys for sharing. The menu has helpful recommendations and spicyness levels indicated. My party mostly ordered curries; though we did not order any of the tandoori meat, the meat in our curries were at perfect temperatures, moist rather than dry. We tried the paratha (potato bread), garlic naan, luchi, and jalapeno naan, which was. For those who want to try to the exotic bone-in goat, but are concerned about restaurant etiquette, I highly recommend it; the bones were usually not more than an easily picked one per piece, and some pieces didnt have any bones. Would be interested in trying the lunch buffet sometime!
Ordered to go from here, big mistake. I dont know where they get their recipes, but chicken tikka is not a bowl of funky under cooked chicken wings. Those things were food poisoning on a plate and this is yet another joint that thinks peas pilau is 7 peas scattered on a bowl of white rice. They myst think peas are expensive because what they call matar paneer had the least number of peas I have ever seen in that dish, are peas in short supply in New York? I am forced to conclude these places on Lex all operate on the assumption that we dont know what Indian food is. They are wrong.
Customer service has changed way worse. I am going to this restaurant for 3 years but now all the waiters are rude. I always order Togo box for lunch... but their policy for not offering a separate box for desert and we don’t have freedom to choose stuff from the buffet. Even I won’t like to give them a star as well. Sahib has got worse over the years with the management
Service was good but the food itself and restaurant environment was bad. It was hot when I got in here so I asked them to turn on the AC which they said was but didnt seem like it.I got the boneless chicken biryani and it wasnt properly seasoned in terms of spices or even salt. Would recommend to stay away from this place..
Service was poor. 1st person came to pour water, and we asked for sparkling. She took our water glasses and went away. 2nd person came over 5 minutes later and gave us water glasses. We told them we would like sparkling water. So he left. 3rd person came over and just poured still water without asking. The tables around us received little mango lassis and a basket of papadum before ordering. We got nothing. 1st person came back and we asked if they could make any of their specialty cocktails without alcohol -- i.e. mocktails. She said no. 4th person came over to take our order before wed a chance to even look at the 2nd page of the menu, and his breath was horrific. The Chole was decent, although quite spicy despite asking for mild. Rogan Josh was the least flavorful Ive ever had. Cocunut rice was boring, despite being pretty damn expensive for rice, and there is no rice included with the curries. It was $65 for 2 small curries, rice, naan and 2 sparkling waters. Never going back.
Made reservations for 7, called before hand to confirm BYOB policy. However when we got to the restaurant, the situation turned to total confusion very rapidly. The waiter, after seating us down informed us that we are not allowed to bring our own, despite the fact that the restaurant does not have a bar. When we protested, he tried his best to explain with a big unbefitting smile and suggested that we should go to Dhaba, next door which he said is also owned by them and has the liquor license. Walked out saying no way we are going to patronize their sister restaurant, Dhaba. We figured there are plenty of choices on the curry hill. Landed at Chote Nawab and as we were being seated, to our bemusement saw the same waiter with a mystifying smile from Sahib escorting a party of customers to Chote Nawab. Upon enquiring from our current waiter, we were informed, its also owned by the same management. At this point we were praying things need to get better. We were starving. But alas , that turned out to be a wishful thinking. The current waiter with no smile, this time, curtly informed us there is a steep $15 corkage for wine and $3 for our own IPA beer. We had reached a point of complete submission and agreed to all the charges. The waiter insisted on pouring the beer into the glasses and proceeded hastily to do the same and as we watched in disbelief half of the beer erupted into a volcano and flowed over to the table. After a customary apology proceeded to repeat it again. Now, this was turning into farce. Unfortunately, this left a bad taste even before we could taste the food. A friendly tip for the management (Hemant Mathur and Shiva Natarajan), besides focusing on exotic dishes and getting glowing reviews from NY times, a little attention to training staff at customer service will help build business for the long haul rather than annual opening and shutting down of their restaurants, like Haldi which also opened with similar fan fare and glowing reviews like Sahib only to shut down with an a year.
I will say the worst food I have ever eaten .Normally for North Indian food I would go to Dhaba which is good .On dhaba recomendation I went to this restaurant because of there kitchen update on thanksgiving .the place looks nice but food was horrible .Another scam putting Indian name behind Bangladeshi food .Hope they can prepare food according to there name and outlook .

2022-05-06Decent Indian restaurant with good service and food.We got chicken lollipops, eggplant fritters, butter chicken, and lamb.Chicken lollipops was certainly interesting with a mix of spicy and tangy that it was similar to Korean style fried chicken albeit a heavier batter.Eggplant fritter is a great snack-ish starter.Butter chicken was alright as it was bit to sweet so it’s not highlighting the flavor it ought to have in its authentic form.Lamb was on point as the meat was pretty tender.MUST Get their Naan, fluffy and piping hot!Attentive service was a plus.

2022-07-05Stumbled upon this great place while I was in NYC.The food was delicious!! We got the Palak Chaat, Lasooni Gobi, Malai tandoori Mushroom , Veg Mughalai Biryani and Ras Malai. While everything tasted absolutely amazing! The Biryani was a little spicy for me.The service was fast and the places is open until 11:30.

2022-06-25Good Indian food with plenty of options from both North India and South India. Quantities are good, prices are decent and flavors are authentic but a bit more subtle than homemade.Their spicy is spicy for even people who were brought up in India, so unless you are ready with some lassi on the side, get medium or mild. Our favorite dishes (including over multiple takeouts) were the chicken chettinad (really spicy) and chicken biryani. Mean moilee (coconut based fish curry) was good but could have had more flavor.

2022-05-29Visiting from out of town , requested uber eats at my hotel ,the food is absolutely amazing 10/10! the chicken was soft and fresh( plenty to share for 2),hakka noodles was delicious (quantity is less) ingredients were in ample amount.it was delivered in a fancy printed bag, but it came with a very cheap quality of utensils! difficult to eat with. and the gravy was not wrapped in stretch film , the bag was leaking when receivedover all qualifies for all 5 stars because the food is mamamia!

2022-02-17I have already ordered twice from this place! I had the:Delhiwali Chili Chicken (Gravy)Szechwan Chicken (Gravy)Sweet and Sour Chicken (Gravy)Sahib Spring Rolls (Veg/ Chicken)Achari Chicken TikkaThe flavors are very savory and the serving size is plentiful for the price! I usually can eat for two meals. The dishes come with a small bowl and rice. Anything with the gravy just means that its sauce heavy. I have yet to be disappointed!

2022-04-05This is the best curry in Murray Hill. I have tried many places but Sahib is by far the stand out restaurant.I have eaten take out from Sahib a lot of times but decided to go dine there last night with friends. The service was amazing and the food was on point. There were 5 of us at the table and we were all basically licking our plates clean.I highly recommend Sahib and I will definitely continue to dine here.

2021-10-13Amazing!! We got chettinad, konju pappas, and murgh methi malai (the best), with two orders of coconut rice and garlic naan. It was ALL so delicious and the service was perfect. Im surprised Sahib was so empty while Bhatti next door was so full. Would definitely go again!!
