The worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. My boyfriend had order enchiladas with salsa verde, and they came out with no salsa verde. Our server Samuel then lied and said that the sauce was underneath the enchilada’s, and was not. Then I had ordered flour tortilla tacos and received corn tortillas. I don’t like them because of the taste and how easily they fall apart, which of course mine fell apart. So I then asked my server to please replace the taco since he had brought the incorrect one. We then never received my replacement taco, until we asked for the check. Rice and beans were also cold. I will never come back. Food was terrible and so was the service.
My first time trying Salenas was take out on Cinco De Mayo 2022 - it was phenomenal. We ordered a few different dishes to try (all in which were amazing) and of course a to-go marg! This place has my business, I cant wait to go back and enjoy it in person. I highly recommend!
This is the first time I have been here. My wife recommends this place and the food. The decor is very nice inside. Very spacious. The food is absolutely the best Mexican food I have I have had as far as Mexican food. They put bay vista taqueria, Monte Albon, and Chipolte to shame. I highly recommend going here.
Great cocktails and food even when it is packed on cinco de meyo there was great tasting food!!! The bar was packed and it was 45 minutes to get a table but that was all okay and worth the wait. Very impressed that they still held their standard with a lot of ppl there and under pressure. I will be coming back.
Service is excellent. As soon as we sat down, a server gave us a basket of warm fresh chips and salsa. They refilled our chip basket several times. Very good!I ordered the Sopes, 2 fried masa boats served with shredded beef, topped with pickled onion, cilantro and salsa fresca. I found it a little dry. I think they forgot to put the salsa fresca. My daughter ordered the Quesadillas Supreme. She said that she enjoyed it. My son had the Stuffed avocado. It was filled with sauteed peppers, onions and a melted three-cheese blend. He too gave it 5 stars.
The wait staff was great but the food was awful! We had to ask “is everyone in the kitchen ok?” because we ordered vegetarian and all of our entrees came with pork! Beans were very bland and goopy and the rice was tasteless and hard. Just an overall gross meal. Fortunately they took the entrees off the bill, we paid for our drinks and left. Will not be returning.
What an excellent meal, had the Enchiladas 4 ways. Staff is masked 😷 and prompt service. Sam waited on us outside and was friendly, fast, and helpful. The food was absolutely delicious, fresh and flavorful. But most importantly we felt safe eating here. We will definitely be back. Thank you
Ive been here a handful of times. I feel like the food is never consistent. This last time the food was very bland. The salsa was the worst. It had zero flavor. Thats one of the things I enjoy when eating Mexican. The server was okay but not as attentive as she could have been. Had to ask for water refills. It was also hot and stuffy in the restaurant.
Those were the BEST enchiladas i have ever had! (Mexican flag) The service was very friendly and quick. Theyve brought us chips and salsa three times while we waited for our food (the food came quickly, but we were also eating the chips quickly😆)We also ordered the fajita and the stuffed avocado. Those were both really wonderful too, but the enchiladas were knock-your-socks-off good. There is a fantastic atmosphere, and even the bathrooms have really cool artwork!
This is definitely not Rochesters best Mexican, but the vibe is decent... Then again, I just love the vibe in all of Village Gate. I would suggest going once if you have a coupon or even just to cross it off your Rochester bucketlist if youre a local, but other than that, Id suggest Monte Albon or even La Casa for for a more satisfying Mexican experience.
House margs tasted like well tequila with a splash of limeade and water. All the meats were pretty decently cooked (chicken and pulled beef) but rice and beans were bland and lacking flavor. I’m not trying to be tough on them but I’m not sure how anybody could say this place is the best Mexican around - even in the best circumstances the food just doesn’t have a very high ceiling. I would not recommend.
This place gets five stars just because of their enchiladas. They were literally the best Ive ever had! On top of that their service was exceptional and the other food we ordered was top notch. Definitely recommend. I will be sure to come back if Im ever in this area again.
Great Food. Great Service. Maggie was our server and was very helpful.Portions are quite large The only drawback is ordering the first drink had way too much ice . Drink was great tasting. Second drink I asked to hold the ice drink .It was very weak. Didn’t taste the same. Seemed watered down .But otherwise ,The food desserts was very good, the food was quite good ( my friend wished it had more spices) and Maggie was a joy!
Most enjoyable experience and delicious food! I spontaneously ordered ahead and it was ready exactly when they said it would be! Bacon wrapped jalapeños, drunken shrimp tacos, and gluten free cauliflower tacos were spectacular as was the salsa, rice and beans were delicious with just the right amount of seasoning! I will definitely be back!!! 😊
My boyfriend and I decided to come here instead of The Gatehouse due to an hour long wait time. Big mistake. The bartender, who also waited our table, made a good first impression, but it all went down hill from there. My empanadas were okay, but definitely not worth $16. The rice was dry, and the beans lacked flavor. My boyfriend ordered the Chimichanga which, besides not tasting good, was cold in the middle. A $17 ripoff. After that our waitress was no where to be found. We were finished for a half hour before we could ask for the check. We then waited so long for her to come back we decided just to leave cash on the table. I would not recommend this restaurant.
Selenas has the best Margaritas in town!!! This is a picture of a super yummy spicy margarita made with fresh jalapenos! I do have to complain that theyve changed their quesadillas, they used to be amazing and now they are just blah and made completely different, so I wont be ordering those again! They charge the same amount of money but you definitely dont get what you used to pay for, the quality is sub par! I also am disappointed to hear they no longer make the mango habanero sauce that came in the Selenas made bottles. Ive used it every time Ive gone there and have bought a bottle to take home almost every time. The bartender told me that he has bought a bottle of another brand just to have at the bar because so many people request it, and much to my dismay it wasnt half as good as Selenas brand. The Jack Daniels wings are still out of this world! It breaks my heart to only leave 3 stars and they are only getting that because of the margaritas and wings! Im not really sure if this restaurant has changed hands or managers or what but the other things that I and so many other people have grown to love are gone! Has been my favorite Mexican restaurant for the last 7 years, but unfortunately in my last visit I will be limited to wings and margaritas when I go!! Not that thats a bad thing but without the yummy mango habanero sauce I dont have much of a choice!
Ask for Maggie! We had a great time with amazing service and food. The 5 of us enjoyed our margaritas and the steak tacos and combination Fajita dinners were authentically delicious with flavors you dont get around rochester much. Best of all the server Maggie brought us the check and also handed my pregnant wife a Salenas onesie. We will be sure to come back next time we are in the mood for some great mexican and cocktails.
Seemingly knowing that it would be busy being Cinco De Mayo we wanted to try it. We werent able to call ahead so we should up and was told about an hour wait, but they got us in about 25 minutes. Huge plus. Our waitress was superb and was on top of things. My boyfriend pointed out that there was hardly any Mexican employees or patrons there. The deco was pretty cool, this being our first time there. We had heard from several people how great the food was there, so we were a little disappointed that it wasnt as great as we had hoped. Were chalking it up to how crazy busy they were. However one thing that could have helped was the music playing in the background. You want as much authenticity as possible when you go out to help soak in the traditions and atmosphere. I would have rated this a 3.5 but its not offered.
The food was delicious! Most of the menu items were pretty typical Mexican fare but had a twist that made it unique to Selenas. Prices were quite reasonable for a downtown Rochester restaurant. It was a little hard to find for a first-timer but with it. We went for an early dinner just before 5pm and there was no wait at all and the food came quickly. All in all we were very pleased. Oh, and kids meals are free on Sundays!
I cannot believe they call this a Mexican restaurant. The food is incredibly bland and the service stunk. We were completely ignored by our server and when the food came it lacked the kind of Mexican spices you would expect of any Mexican restaurant. My enchiladas were basically unflavored beef thrown in a blah corn tortilla. The rice was nowhere near Mexican. It was regular yellow rice with no salt or spices. I also find it odd that this is supposed to be an authentic Mexican restaurant, yet I didnt spot a single Latino working here. There are many other great Mexican restaurants out there. Salinas is not what it used to be.
The staff is wonderful at Salenas. Every person we talked to, was very polite and helpful. The food was good. Very pleasing. We tried the open faced quesadillas and the Mexican Flag dish along with the queso. All delicious. Well the queso grew on me, I wasnt sure, at first, it kind of tasted like port wine cheese. Our biggest complaint is that they were out of a lot. I specifically went there to try the marinated tofu tacos and unfortunately that was one of the items they were out of. I will have to go back for the tofu, for sure.
I know what Spanish food is supposed to taste like because Im not allowed Tina afro-latina and their food has absolutely no personality no flavor and you spend a lot of money on no personality and no flavor they need a new Chef I would not eat there again unless I knew that they had a good shift because it was a waste of money taste like fish sticks it was terrible absolutely horrible. But the waiter and the bartender the drinks were great and the waiter he was very polite and very helpful and very catering to our needs but the food was horrible.
Very dissatisfied with my meal. Got the burrito with shredded beef and enchilada sauce. Was cold and not edible. No sauce put on it either . Very bland. Ended up throwing it out.Got rice on the side with refried beans. Surprised that they do not serve seasoned rice. No taste.I am going back again to give them a 2nd try because so many people I know love their food. I am guessing I just got unlucky.Service was good and I liked the place otherwise.Just worst Mexican meal I ever had.
Was very excited to try after viewing the menu and reading reviews... party of 8 on a Saturday night. Drinks : not sure why our waitress made all the drinks and not a bartender. Jalapeño margarita just tasted terrible, frozen margaritas very watery..out of two main dishes on the menu. Food took forever.. mainly everyone ordered some kind of tacos... fish , shrimp , cauliflower and beef ... way over cooked and too much batter.. one piece of fish the size of my pinky on each taco and not much else ,, including flavor .. seemed like everyone was waiting to go home as wait staff was pretty much doing their closing detail around us.. way over priced and not quality food. super disappointed and will not return .
We havent been to Selenas in a while and we were very disappointed. While we enjoyed the chips and salsa. The dinners were dry and barely warm. My stuffed avocado were very small and bruised and discolored, the chicken and beans so dry. The enchiladas had very little sauce and filling was dry as well.
Great Food. Great Service. Maggie was our server and was very helpful.Portions are quite large The only drawback is ordering the first drink had way too much ice . Drink was great tasting. Second drink I asked to hold the ice drink .It was very weak. Didn’t taste the same. Seemed watered down .But otherwise ,The food desserts was very good, the food was quite good and Maggie was a joy!
I love this place! The food is awesome. The drinks taste great. The service and the atmosphere are perfect. If you havent gone here yet or havent gone here recently then you need to go tonight! My favorite is the drunken shrimp tacos or guacamole tacos. They do have gluten free options especially if you use corn tacos.
Myself and two friends had a reservation for 6:30. I arrived at 6:20 and asked if I could be seated. I was told no, I had to wait for them, our table was at 6:30, and told to wait out in the hallway. No chairs to sit and wait, my choice was to stand after working all day on my feet. There was a staircase so I sat on a step to wait. At 6:30, I asked if I could be seated at our table now as our reservation was at 6:30, nope, had to wait for them still. There were several empty tables when we finally were allowed to be seated at our reserved table. Not sure where the owners of Salenas heard that this was good business. I would never go there again. The food was mediocre, and I am being kind with that assessment. The only thing that was exemplary was the service we were given by the people who waited on our table. Salenas should be ashamed of themselves and their lack of common courtesy for their guests. And no I was not offered to sit at the Bar. I have no desire to sit alone at the Bar.
Quality of food has gone down tremendously since the pandemic. Like most businesses, they struggle to have enough quality staff, but again you get what you pay for. If your looking for a good night out for Mexican food, their are plenty of places that are far superior to Salenas. It will be a while before I go back
Was ok. I ordered a margarita it was 9$ so I was expecting a typical margarita glass large. Nope it came in a low ball cocktail glass, almost a shot glass. The food was ok. My friend ordered enchiladas and there was barely any sauce on them. I ordered chimichanga and it was mostly cheese.
Had Salena’s for dinner with my husband. I ordered the Trio. The Salsa Fresca was had no seasoning. Only tomatoes and something green and it tasted like it was starting to spoil. Salsa Verde was not good either. I never expect a Mexican restaurant to have a poor rating on their salsa. The Salsa Chipotle was great. The chips were greasy and seemed like they were at the bottom of the cooker for a long time. I ordered the Super Combo Enchiladas. It was a very big serving, but really had no taste. My husband ordered the fish tacos and they were very good. Very disappointed with dinner and will probably not return.
You can almost forget about covid 19 here. You can only remove your mask at the table biu thats fine by me. The server was friendly and informed. Drinks are delicious but a bit dear for the size. I had the Mexican Flag, three burritos chicken, beef, and pork. HUGE portions. Plenty to take home. If you like heat try stuffed Jalapenos. 4 to a serving. I made it through 2. Very bright, airy and just crowded enough to feel comfy. IIl be back. Drinks, appetizers, and entrees, and tip, $120 for 3. Buena Noches.
Atmosphere was ok, but that was the most flavorless steak fajita I have ever had.Edit due to owners comments.I call them like I see them. The fajita was flavorless. I didnt even mention prior to this that it was luke warm. The owner talks about barely surviving due to covid, but on a Sunday night the place was packed. I had to wait for a table (not a complaint) and I did not see an empty table during my entire time there. Do not blame covid for the lack of quality in my meal.I had originally given Salinas 2 stars, but because of the owners whining and inability to accept criticism I have adjusted the rating down to one star.
Seriously disappointed. We waited 10 minutes after seating for our server to take a drink order. 10 minutes later came back to tell us they didnt have the tequila we asked for after telling us they had it. No biggie. We ordered a different tequila and app. 15 minutes later the margaritas came out, one with salt after asking for no salt. So, 45 minutes after being seated, no drink and no appetizer. We walked. I guess well never no if the food was good as I wont be going back after such abysmal service.
This is an amazingly cozy place to enjoy excellent Mexican food. Everything my husband and I had was just phenomenal ! From the start of friendly service, and chips and salsa. My blood orange margarita was great! The Mole and Verde enchiladas are to die for! The tacos, rice and beans were great to. To finish off an amazing meal , fried ice cream was also amazing! All around great place , with an amazing first impression! Definitely will be telling friends and family about this place , will be back very soon! Many compliments to the chef! He/she did a great job!
Went last night with some family who are visiting from out of state as it is one of their favorite places to come when they are in town. I got a mango frozen margarita and it was delightful. We started with the holy moly and the wings, both delicious and we weren’t done with the apps when our entrees came to the table, which I’m not a huge fan of, it makes dining feel rushed, and it wasn’t that busy when we came in. The meals were very good, as good as it always is, they are very consistent, which is good. The dining room seems a little updated from the last time we came in, and our waiter was pleasant. The bathroom was also very clean. We will keep coming back.
The service was great, and the food was flavorful & properly proportioned. Selinas has never been a super spicy Mexican place, but the flavor is always rich & authentic. If you want something spicy, ask them when you order, and they can kick most dishes up a notch pretty easily.Lots of restaurants are seeing complaints in reviews about food blandness. The past year has been a COVID pandemic. One of the major symptoms is loss of smell (lasting weeks to months after illness) , which highly impacts taste too. Interesting how every review that notes/ pictures mask wearing is 5 star & most of the ones complaining about masks also note food was bland. See a pattern? I sure do.
Edited because honest reviews are unwelcome and get backlash. Im so sorry I cannot find any flavor in this food and I truly wish it wasnt so, thats why Ive tried eating here so many times because I WANT to support local businesses. Ive tried multiple times but I cannot justify trying again based on the response from this business. Please do not bully those who leave honest feedback. What you say is public!
Took our son here for his birthday, loved the food and our waiter took the time to describe the food in detail, as it was my 1st time eating Mexican!**UPDATEDOur second visit here, and again for a birthday celebration - this time mine! The waiter was friendly and the staff were attentive. The food was delicious, just as it was the first time I was here. We will be back again, someday!
Really good margaritas but make sure to get one of the top shelf tequilas on special rather than the house silver. Food is not exceptional but it is solid. The location is fantastic - large outdoor bar with first come first served tall tables as well as normal restaurant seating. Chips and salsa seem homemade and are always a highlight.
Food was good. Great atmosphere too. My Margherita came in a low ball glass though. That was a little weird. Ive never seen that before. Ill go back but probably order a beer. They also have Squirt so that rules.Update- I wrote this review and when I told my wife she said, it said in the menu it came in a low-ball glass. I guess I was too focused on enjoying a Margarita to read that. Thanks to the owner for their reply. Well definitely be coming back. Looking forward to diving into a burrito.
We went for a late meal after theater for a business/personal meal with a small group on Sunday evening around 8 pm; place was loud and conversation was difficult.Food was pretty good, but took a long time to order and then get it.Service was slow and we had to keep asking for chips because we were hungry and the basket was small for a group. The waiter seemed surprised and bit put off by our requesting more. The 3rd basket didnt come until the good did, despite our trying to catch his attention several times after requesting it. Place seemed short staffed. The lines for the bathrooms were enormous, more like a club than a place to eat, and patrons were inebriated and snapping and arguing with each other because the wait was about 10 minutes. Very unpleasant. This place seems to cater more toward the drinking and partying crowd, and the bar folks and the party of 8 drinking and snacking folks at table next to ours seemed to get most of our waiters attention. Our waiters did apologize and thank us for being patient, so maybe it was a fluke. Would try it again if a group wanted to go-- probably a better place for a large party like a birthday, where focus is more celebrating and socializing with drinks & snacks--seems like an ideal atmosphere for that type of occasion.
My favorite Mexican restaurant by far. Whenever I am in the mood for an enchilada or burrito I think Salenas. We have always been seated quickly and the servers are very attentive and informative. The weekends however can be very busy so I recommend reservations. The food is very good and the portions are huge. You can easily make 2 meals out of any of their plates. An honorary mention goes for their wings as well. Im not at all sure wings are a Mexican specialty but they are some of the most flavorful wings Ive had. Ill be visiting Salenas for years to come.
I’ve grown up in Rochester hearing about this place for years. Had high expectations coming in. The food was average definitely nothing special. Probably wouldn’t recommend it to anybody. Environment is cool. Service was slow. We had wings they were great. Tacos were ok my friend said hers were dry. Margarita tasted watered down. Jose joes is better.
Solid service, even on busy nights. The food is good. I have been here many times with friends. Not my personal choice of food styles, so I am glad they have the BBQ wings. For the price, I thought the carafe of sangria could have been just one glass larger. Also a good choice for lunch. They get it when you say you have places to be.
Excellent authentic Mexican food. Chips and salsa are fresh and made in-house. I opted for beef in my tacos and it was tender and perfectly seasoned. They happened to be running a tequila tasting competition going last time I was there so we ended up participating. Really fun environment.
My favorite Mexican restaurant! Located in the revived Village Gate, Salenas is a Rochester staple. Friendly staff, abundant seating, and delicious food. I love the quesadillas supreme, my boyfriend loves the steak tacos. We go there for almost every celebratory occasion. This is a go-to restaurant for sure!
Authentic experience! I enjoyed an quesadilla supreme with beef and my hubby had the beef fajita. Both were wonderful and the servings were huge. We also enjoyed flan for dessert, however Im not a big cinnamon fan, so the sprinkling on top was too much for me. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Only complaint-it was chilly in the restaurant.
Ive been here twice in the last few weeks and both times they managed to get my order wrong somehow. The first time I didnt complain and just picked around the peppers that I requested be left out of my meal. Time number two I requested that shrimp be added to a dish for an additional fee. They did add the shrimp, they just forgot the chicken that was supposed to be in the dish. I did call and my money was refunded so they did try to fix the situation. I may try again one day; it will probably be when the craziness of Covid-19 dies down.
Salenas is a fun restaurant in the village gate. The restaurant is easy to get to, parking is plentiful, and they can accommodate large parties easily. Sitting outside in the summertime is nice, especially with a view of the main area in the village gate. All that being said, I have found that there is much more flavorful and authentic food at other Mexican restaurants in the area. Salenas is just okay in terms of the food quality, presentation and taste.
This place! We can always count on sitting down and instantly getting hot chips and salsa. Not open Monday nights though. The portions are a good size. I dont know how authentic anything is but its sure tasty. Weve always had great service. Only once was our order wrong but it might have been our miscommunication. Accidentally ordered an extra tomale or something which we just took home and ate the next day.
We were a little disappointed when coming in since I was on crutches and asked if I could get the food specials if I sat at a table. They said no and wouldnt budge on it saying the specials were only if sitting at the bar which I wasnt able to do. So reluctantly we took a table seat. The decor is nothing special, very diner style. Looks worn and dated. The waiter wasnt overly friendly but he did give us a discount when he heard our bar seating dilemma. I would only give it three stars but the food was amazing! The quesadilla I had was huge and nicely done with lots of fresh vegetables. My daughter had a delicious order of nachos and my boyfriend loved the huge burrito he ordered.
As always the food is amazing! Always packed and busy. It was hard to hear others at our table of 8, we were sitting in the middle of the floor area.If you plan to go and hang for a few hours I strongly recommend trying to sit in the out door seating area. The stuffed avocados are my favorite on the menu, but the supreme quesadilla is a very close second.
This place has become overrated. But you wouldnt have you visited some authentic Mexican restaurants. When I first went here I thought the food was good service is great and drinks were awesome. Now after having tried authentic Mexican food at various restaurants Ive come to find out that this food is just Bland boring and far from authentic. The service and drinks are still great and it has a great atmosphere if youre looking for the bar type scene. A great spot to hang out on the weekends have a drink on the patio and have some fun but the food is just very lackluster. Disappointed.
Youre looking for the Best Authentic Mexican Food & Margaritas, look no further!! Great Waitress, Waiters & Staff too!Dont forget to ask for their Loyalty card because I know you be coming back. Enjoy 😉😃☺
I had the fixed prix menu and everything from the amuse-bouche to the desert was absolutely delicious. On top of that all of the food was presented so beautifully. The apple dessert was a work of art.The pasta on the appetizer menu was a small portion but was actually perfect because it was so rich that you wouldnt want to eat a whole bowl of the pasta. It was kind of like a ravioli stuffed with a really rich cheese.
Many great times at Salenas! I come here mostly for dinner. Its a bit pricey for the amount that you get but the food and drinks are delicious! The lunch on the other hand... Cheap price for a bigger than normal lunch portion! Like I was ready for a nap after eating all that food.I only had one problem here before and it was a weekend night. I tried to get a table but the line was out the door. I didnt stay and I ended up going to another place. Its a local hot spot! The staff is great. The place is clean. Its nice to sit outside when the weather is warm. Parking is a hit or miss. I once parked next to the build, and then the next time I parked at the far end of back lot. Overall, great food and drinks!
After hearing nothing but great things had to try. As someone who lives Mexican, highly disappointed. Got the enchiladas with rice and refried beans. Somehow nothing had any flavor. Never had an enchilada without flavor before. Not sure I want to give it a second try.
Jennifer was our server tonight. She was attentive and knowledgeable. One of the best servers weve had the pleasure of meeting. The super enchilada combo was awesome! The vegetable fajita was generous in its portions and satisfying! Great local craft beer choices. Enjoyed Three Heads The Kind and Lost Borough Brewing 007 IPA.
I like Selinas. Its a great Mexican restaurant. Nice crowd. For large parties like our I suggest reservations. Not so happy with the hostess. Not very friendly. They wouldnt seat us until most of our party showed up. So our reservation was for 6pm, we got seated at about 6:15 or 20 😒. The waiting staff was very nice.
Sorry to say, but customer service is not a priority and the food is average. I have given this restaurant 3 chances, and each time I have been disappointed. The food is just so average. If you appreciate Mexican food, I cannot recommend this restaurant---very, very average. And dont order a Margarita on the rocks, because it is served in a small rocks glass, and they charge $7 for this very short drink. I nicely mentioned it to my server, but her reply was that they cant carry Margarita glasses to the table, Seriously?
Ive been here a few times and its always......meh. Chips and salsa were.......meh. If you like to drink and socialize in that area at a bar that serves Mexican and arent that picky about your Mexican, then this will be a good place for you. If you are in search of top notch Mexican food then I would keep searching. Our server was great and the place itself seemed like a nice bar/restaurant atmosphere, but the food fell short for us.
The custom service in this place is not good. We made a reservation two weeks ago and then made us wait 30 mins (they did give us some guac and free queso for making up for our wait which was nice). Every worker there seemed missable and was acting very rude. It was a busy night, but you shouldn’t be taking that out on paying customers. The margs were ok and the food was sub par. The salsa was very bad and bland. Overall, I don’t recommend this place. Also, the half my marg was spilled across the table by the waitress and me and my friends were soaked. I understand that mistakes happen but it could have been taken care of better than just a napkin. Thumbs down!
Ive been a patron here on and off over eight years (come here less and less with time), its on a decline. People that work here act as if they are joyless (some are downright rude, one of the worst customer service experiences of my life was here not long ago). The food is petty bland overall though I do like their Mexican mess and some of their desserts are good. Also the 1/2 price appetizer specials are good. Used to get chips and salsa automatically (love their chips) now you have to ask. Margaritas come in tiny glasses. Their frozen ones are good but their machine has not been working last two times I stopped by. Its only real saving grace is its location.
Selenas is a great place with a awesome food, friendly staff, and nice decor. Their tortilla chips and salsa made for an excellent appetizer. Moreover, their enchiladas are awesome and were some of the best that I have had. They offer a good selection of Mexican dishes on their menu from appetizers to entrées to desserts. Overall, Selenas is a great experience with even better food that I would highly recommend.
UPDATED: The owner was thoughtful and kind enough to respond to my email very thoroughly and discuss all of this with me. For that alone, Im adding a star to raise the review to 4/5.Giving more details here, but Ill email as well. TL;DR: not the flavors I was hoping for and lack of attentiveness from very busy server. We had made reservations there for Valentines Day and have been there before. The atmosphere is comfortable but not fancy, décor is bright and warm, the restaurant on that night was busy but not line-out-the-door busy. Our server was friendly but definitely overbooked and not very attentive. He took a while to bring any drinks (water included) and the food was slow arriving as well. The strawberry margarita I asked for was definitely rimmed with salt after I specified sugar, but I couldnt flag the server down before Id already decided to just drink it through a straw, so I simply mentioned it when I ordered a second drink. As for the food, well... we always go in hoping for the best and are always a bit disappointed. Theres nothing inherently wrong with it. Its just not very flavorful. Its as if the kitchen forgot how to make sauces and generally failed to include spice, even on the house-made chips (very little salt, mostly oil). Our meals - vegetarian Mexican Flag style enchiladas - were bland to say the least, and the dessert empanada was overcooked. I ended up taking home the leftovers and re-making them with more sauce and spices. 3/5 for atmosphere and willingness to vegetarianize the dinner special, and for getting my second margarita right.
The food was bland. Tacos were soggy and just had a dishwater aftertaste. Salsa had no taste at all. In a nutshell the food had zero seasoning. I love Mexican food but just wasnt hitting like I thought it would. The only saving grace was the friendly staff. Will not be returning.
It was bad . No flavor. Rice and beans were dry and old. Ordered a chimichonga and it was cold on insie. For somthing being deep fried it wasnt very crispy. There mexican pizza was just chesse on a tortilla. Very sad dont know how they are open. Kids meal cookies were hard as a rock. And i had a stomach ache after 5 bites of.food. pay 50 to get food poisoning.never going bacm
2.5 Great happy hour deals and specials but that seems to be the only great thing about this place. The tacos, borritos and nachos are all quite bland and pricey. Service is mediocre at best - very hit or miss. Feeling a Margarita? Well dont order it on the rocks, you might as well have asked for water with lime.Salenas leaves a bit to be desired.
Food was ok... staff was friendly and accommodating... overall nice vibe and atmosphere for all ages... they are in the process of adding or improving an outside patio area which I imagine will be a popular summer feature of this restaurant. We will definitely visit again.
Real deal Mexican food, and in my opinion the best in Rochester. I always get great service, the staff is always smiling, and the food is absolutely amazing. While there are a lot of newer Mexican restaurants in Rochester I dont think anyone has quite caught up to Salenas just yet.
Margarita was straight tequila with a pinch of margarita mix. Had the nachos which were good and plentiful but was weird cause the chips were like the base and all the toppings were on top which made the chips soggy. Lastly the location was hard to find. There was no sign at the entrance. Just signs for acupuncture. Had to ask a girl smoking outside if this was the right place
Visited for lunch with a friend yesterday. The ambiance was great—had a shaded outdoor table and it was lovely! The food was just okay. I ordered my meal with no cheese but when my vegetarian burrito came, it had cheese inside and more cheese atop the refried beans, which were very bland. Everything was under seasoned for my taste. I expect Mexican food to be full of flavor, but this just wasn’t. Iceberg lettuce on top of my my burrito, veggies inside we’re sautéed in maybe only oil. The chips and salsa were yummy though!!
Be prepared to get a lot of food. The margaritas and sangrias are really good, so definitely buy a drink. Theyre really nice about special requests and food allergy accomodations too (for example, I went with a friend who wanted more cilantro on the side and they put a lot of cilantro in a little cup for her). The waitstaff is pretty good, if you can, try to get Josh as your waiter, hes fantastic! I give it 4 stars because every time I go, what I order is never what I picture on the menu as described. I ordered nachos and I got a plate of....toppings? Beans, meat, cheese, but no tortilla chips that I could see(there were a few on the bottom) so I used the basket of chips they give you to help fill it out. Once I ordered a quesadilla, and although the menu says its topped with lettuce, when I got it, it had a MOUND of lettuce on top, which was weird, I thought it would be just a sprinkling or more. The food is good, just...in my opinion not what you expect when you get it. Everything else, the staff, drinks, ambience, is quite nice!
Always a good place to grab someMexican cusine. It gets very busy around typical dinner time but weve found if you are to go later in the evening they are usually able accommodate you immediately. If you do go early, the bar is a nice place to hang out while waiting for your seats. One of our top choices of places to go in Rochester for a good dinner.
Everything has changed! I was always a huge fan of Salenas. Recently I went and the food was not nearly as good of quality. Even the chicken was not cooked properly and I found bones in my enchilada. They have gone cheaper in the cooking of the food and havent changed the menu prices. I no longer feel like I am getting what I pay for. They have removed their Salenas signature sauces/salsa which loses all authenticity. Not worth it!
Selenas is always at the top of our list for Mexican. The food is always delicious, the staff is great, and the margaritas... Oh the margaritas! 👌 I was there a few weeks ago and was nine months pregnant at the time (no margaritas for me). Our waitress brought over a onsie that says Taco bout cute as a gift for our soon to be newborn. It was the nicest gesture. I cannot wait to go back with our little guy!
Waitress, Jennifer, was not pleasant or welcoming. My companion and I felt we would have gotten better service from the take out area of wegmans. The burrito was flavorless, even after we added whatever sauces were on the table, we still were disappointed. Selinas might have been the go to place years ago but certainly not any more. The only reason I didnt give it less stars was because the busser was a nice guy.
Never had a bad meal here, and as someone who typically never has to take food home from restaurants, the Alberto combo has been a bit much for me on occasion and Ive had leftovers. The food is always great the next day too. My only complaint is that they dont take reservations on parties fewer than 5 and this place is jamming on the weekends, for good reason.
Not your average Mex restaurant, Selenas food is always high quality and tasty. Servers are friendly, attentive and prompt. One of our favorite places for dinner, lunch or drinks with friends. We have also done some events at Selenas in their party room.Shrimp Tacos are amazing!!! But then again, everything is so fresh, flavorful and well presented. They also appear to have the widest selection of Tequila of any restaurant in the world, also amazing!
Abandon all hope ye Mexican food lovers who enter here. Not good Mexican food. There is no good Mexican food in the Rochester area. This restaurant is no exception. Chorizo is made in house and is disgusting. I love love love chorizo normally. It is not spicy and tastes like dog food. The pulled pork burrito is okay. All the food sits under heat lamps and dries out before making it to your table. The beans are dry and bland. The rice is pretty good. The chips are pretty good. Salsa is okay. The service is also good. Good staff. I will never return and never recommend. I should have listened to my friends that told me it is gross and too expensive. Man, I miss Mexican food..... :(
Worse Mexican place Ive ever been to. Food are very bland and they left out a few ingredients of our meals than what menu stated. We had to ask for it amd our server sort of rolled her eyes as she walked away. The service was very slow when there were 5 tables with 6 servers. Some servers been chatting around at the bar doing nothing for awhile and even the manager was with them. These servers look joyless.
I went to Salenas recently around happy hour time for a cocktail and a Mexican appetizer. It was rather crowded but the service was still very prompt the food tasted pretty good and the margarita was tasty, we got mango margaritas.its a lively spot where you likely wont be terribly disappointed in a popular location but not the best Mexican food around.
Ive been going to Selenas for at least ten years and the last three experiences were just awful. I will refer to the latest experience. The food is extremely overpriced and I was told prices went up. I ordered the fish tacos and what a disappointment. The dish was $18.00and it tasted like fish that had been fried, got cold and then got dipped in hot oil again. You get three and could literally only finish one. The slaw was dry and that was it folks-old fish and dry slaw for $18.00 bucks. I went home and hours later was woken out of my sleep with vomiting. Will NOT go back again.
I ordered sopes and the sopes were awful. I have never seen sopes like that in my entire life. The rice wasnt even well cooked and the beans werent that great. I am Mexican myself and my parents were so shocked by the food quality. Sorry but if you want to find a good Mexican place, I do not recommend.
The service is beyond poor, our waitress acted like she didnt want to be there, we didnt see much of her and we could barely hear her. The food isnt terrible, its just very bland. Its sad when the flavors at Chipotle out run those at this place. I had to season my leftovers at home the next day. The enchiladas were soggy and surrounded by water from someone using the wrong technique to steam melt the cheese. The tortilla chips, the rice and the dressing on the house salad were the only saving grace to my evening.
Their batch margaritas taste like Koolaid. I also use to love coming here for a the most delicious spicy Tequila Gimlet. It was made with fresh lime juice, tequila and jalapeno . I ordered one last night only to find that theyve changed it completely. Tastes like it was made with overly sweet Roses lime juice and big chunks of jalapeno and seeds which it did not have before. I asked the bartender if he could do it with out the seeds only for him to sarcastically respond that, jalapenos arent seedless. Theyve dropped the ball on their drinks. Will not be returning.
The margaritas are great which is the only reason I would consider two stars however there is too much to overlook. The food is standard for such high prices and the service is terrible. We spent 46 min waiting-which is not at all bad for a Friday night except we then spent almost an hour and a half at the table with only 30min being spent on us looking at the menu/eating. My boyfriends order was wrong despite clarifying with the waitress twice about what he wanted.we had to move the bench of the booth because my phone fell and it was filthy underneath with dirt, grime, old menus and spiderwebs. By the time we sat down the restaurant was not all that busy as most tables were finishing up or already into eating by the time we ordered so that cannot be an excuse for the slow service. The table behind us had two couples come through before our waitress came back with our check to leave. And to top it all off we got an attitude from our waitress at the end of the night when we asked the waitress to split the check. Definitely not worth it.
This restaurant keeps odd hours. They close at 7 if I remember correctly and I showed up just before closing. But they welcomed me in and didnt rush me. The food was very good although the portion was way too large. The service was excellent. If I ever have the opportunity Ill probably go back.
Not impressed with the early lunch service. Sitting at a table in the bar area, the bartender brought me the menu and told me to come over to the bar when I was ready order. I received soft tacos instead of the hard tacos I ordered, and for the 50 minutes I was there no one came over to check on me or to replenish my ginger ale. All while the bar was completely empty. Two guys behind the bar and the host sitting at her station. I finally asked one of the bartenders to please get my bill. Very disappointing. Will just need to take my lunch business somewhere else.
Very unimpressed with this place. I certainly wouldnt call their food authentic. The thing that irritated me the most was their fried ice cream. I wasnt impressed with my food but I was excited to have my favorite, fried ice cream! I ordered it and was sorely disappointed in what they brought back. It wasnt your usual fried ice cream which is ice cream inside of a crunchy fried shell, it seemed like they literally just took a scoop of ice cream and rolled it around in some cinnamon sugar. If I wanted an ice cream sundae Id go to any other non-Mexican restaurant and order that. The word authentic is terribly misleading at this place.
A bit pricy for the quality, $10 lunch special of Tostada & Cheese enchilada was pretty tasty though. Table salsa is very tomato-y and mild if thats your thing. Some more affordable lunch specials or a la carte options would make this an easier place to stop regularly.Coffee here is good though.
Really expensive and not that good. I love tacos and this place isnt good. If you order a few tacos at once, place a napkin under where you are eating to soak up the amount of liquid not drained in the prep of making the tacos. The last taco might have well been served in a glass if water or was that soggy. How can a Mexican place screw up a taco?
Went there twice, once for dinner and the other for Cinco de Mayo. Both times I was really unimpressed. The food is appalling! my beans were cold, the rice was hard and dry and tasted like the bagged knorr rice (gross) and the worst is the margarita- watered down horrible all I could taste was the Tequila. Awful place I will not go again.
We went last night, we have gone there for many years.. last night the food was horrible.. there were 6 of us, all of our food was cold, not warm, cold. The quality of the food was horrible... it turned me and my whole family off so much we all said we will NOT be going back there ever

2021-11-13Tasty straight forward Mexican food with good vegetarian options! Margarita was pretty good, but not particularly strong. Grilled tofu tacos were excellent, and guacamole was good and chunky.

2022-05-30The food was delicious. But really what made the evening for me was the service. I cant remember our servers name Im sorry to say, but he was quietly fantastic. He anticipated needs, reacted to a spilled drink with speed and a smile, he offered a replacement immediately, and just made it all seem effortless. Never once did he arrive to ask how things were just as we took a big bite; his timing was impeccable.

2022-03-17The food was terrific! It looked good and tasted even better. AND, it was served steaming hot. Our server was incredible! She worked at least 5 tables and didnt miss a beat. Checked on our food after she served it to make sure everything was good and to see if we needed anything.. If you can, as for Olivia. Im looking forward to our next trip into Rochester.

2022-03-29My boyfriend and I heard that this was a good local restaurant a while back so we decided to try somewhere new for a date night. We recently went and was completely disappointed! $7 for one empanda. Our food had no flavor and was kind of cold. I had fish tacos that were soggy. My boyfriend had the rice bowl burnt meat and all lettuce and tomatoes. Plus no one informed us about the prices of the alcohol. Paid $12 for 2 Coronas. Our meal ended up being over $50 for food we took home that we tossed out.

2022-07-01Cozy atmosphere, delicious food and excellent service. The nachos were truly loaded with food and flavor and the flan is phenomenal. First time here (celebrating our anniversary) and it wont be our last.

2022-06-23Service was excellent, food not so good. Were there at an off time, 3pm so it was very slow. Food took quite awhile, and came to table luke warm at best, with cold beans? Best item was the chips and salsa, so thats not great. Wouldnt return, meal was below average in presentation, temperature and taste, a dissapointment as this was our first visit.
