Love seeing exceptional coffee shops pop up near home and this one offers an exstensive collection of house made finger foods. i havent tried prepared dishes yet but if the empanada was any example of it im sure i would be impressed. love the corn flour usage for empanadas and the potatos complimented the chicken with a nice texture to balance out the chew from chicken and crust. also the iced coffee was strong and very delicious.
Salento is one of the best restaurants that could have opened in WH. We love their food specifically the bandeja paisa. They have a unique way of making the chicharron and morcilla which makes it authentic and unique! Regarding the pastries, everything is fresh and many items on the menu are gluten-free! The price would never be an issue for me because it’s well worth it.
Buñuelos were great , empanada was nice and crunchy but instead of 2 beef empanadas I got 2 potato ones ! Putting it that way to emphasize on the lack of protein in it , Colombians do mix potatoes in but please dont over do it . Service is pretty slow not your typical Colombian bakery pace , Pricey (knowing what these items sell for in other bakerys) , good spot it seems , yet to try the food but im sure with small adjustments can be better .
LOCALS BEWARE!!!ALL DAY BREAKFAST?? This place is a complete jokeThis place is run by scums, 5$ up charge “PER ITEM” for breakfast items at 3pm even though they advertise “ALL DAY BREAKFAST”. Refused to cough up the extra dough for “extra labor” instead got 2 small pastries and was charged 9$. This place is definitely ripping people off.if they want tip and extra money then steal from your owner, don’t steal from your own community.
Sorry to tell you this but today I am very disappointed with the Ensalada campesina with chicken. The chicken taste was really bad and I had to throw it in the garbage. The guanábana juice was good and the 2 aborrajado to much oil on it and the oil tasted really bad. I paid almost $28.00 too much.
Never in my life living in nyc have I’ve been told there’s going to be a charge of 5$ extra for an all day breakfast sandwich . Made me waste my time , when I explained if the sandwich costs 8 then it would cost me now 13$ ? They said yes a complete JOKE! How dumb is that ? Put that on your flyer then not just tell me once I get there most likely just made that up right there and then unethical and unprofessional. At that point I’ll much rather go to Soho not even there I get told an extra 5$ charge ridiculous , seriously who does that ?.
The nicest people! The outside and inside of this cute spot are beautiful. The mural of Colombia’s National tree outside! I used to have to travel all the way to Jackson Heights, Queens to get some Colombian snacks, but not anymore! The food here is delicious ! The pan de quesos (cheese bread) tastes better than the ones I’ve had in queens too. they have delicious coffee and pastries, for a great price given the homemade quality. During COVID they are offering takeout and delivery and are open until 8pm.
This spot is at the top of my list when I visit the city. The establishment itself has warm pastel colors and terrace vines as a welcome to the eyes. The staff offered my friends and I warm queso puff pastries before we could even look at the menu, they tasted heavenly. The food was fresh and the coffee didnt even need sugar. They have freshly made fruit drinks, my favorite is the Guava!! Such great food, such great service, such great establishment; you have to try it for your taste buds sake.
I would not recommend “La Bandeja Paisa”, after only getting home my beans were missing (which is clearly included in the description) the rice was very oily and the chicharron was not cooked correctly. Did not meet my expectations compared to other columbian restaurants.
I’m currently staying in Washington Heights as I search for a more permanent place in the city, and I wanted to find a great local spot to get coffee in the morning. After some quick Google searching, I decided to try this place since it looked really cute. I’m so glad I did!As someone who has traveled a fair bit and really misses the baking culture of other regions (specifically in Northern Europe), this has been such a pleasant surprise. The pastries are top notch, and the coffee is really good too. Not to mention, the prices are super reasonable and it’s a great value for what you get.You can really taste how fresh the food is, and it’s a welcome change from some of the more high street bakeries. On top of that, the service is very good too! I feel super welcome in the cafe, and everyone is very friendly. All in all, I love this place! And I never write reviews but felt the need to spread the word this time. ❤️
This is a really great coffee shop, coffee is great and food is great but the prices are super high for it being Washington heights. You can get a small latte and a piece of bread for $10 which is normal nyc pricing just not for Washington heights. And for it being everyday as much as I enjoy it is not super cost effective :( will have to get my coffee elsewhere :/
Salentos decor is nice and hip. It is a very clean establishment and they are COVID conscious. Their sweet corn arepa rellena and coffee are pretty good. What I 100% recommend are their pastries! I would order everything off their counter if I could! Their bunelos (plain and guayaba), pandebono, and pastel de platano are out of this world good.
Giving three stars for the location, beautiful colors and ambiance! As a Colombian who lives in Washington Heights, having a Colombian spot nearby is a dream come true and I want to love it! Sadly, I am not impressed with the food, prices are high, but considering it’s Manhattan, fine, but that means I expect the quality of food and dishes to be up to par and sadly it isn’t the case so far. There is SO MUCH POTENTIAL! Servers aren’t Colombian and I suspect person in the kitchen isn’t either. I’ve given this place several tries. I did love the hot chocolate and fresh juices. My beef empanada had mostly fatty meat, so either I had bad luck or the quality of meat used just isn’t there. Please improve so I don’t have to go to Queens or NJ for my empanadas and Colombian cravings.
I had the pleasure of trying Salento and being recognized by the staff on repeat visits. Laura and Melanie both made me feel like a guest and friend; this establishment is an important part of the community and I recommend it to anyone who likes good coffee and company to try it.
I am so happy I found Salento!Hands down, most authentic and yummiest Colombian food in NYC. Wether you’re just having coffee and pandebono or a whole meal, Salento is the place and they have plenty of outside sitting.Few highlights: calentado, morcilla, arepa de queso (so cheesy), empanada de carne (ask for a lime to squeeze on top), churrasco, agua de panela.Yum! Can’t wait to go back!
Needed coffee. After living with Colombians you know the taste. But Salento coffee flavor wasnt even close it was horrible. Threw the coffee out. Ordered bistek encebollado for a friend, she said it was horrible, disgusting. Money wasted. Place looks cozy and charming but the coffee has to be stepped up to actual Colombian coffee. Food needs to be made better. I will try it another time when I am around and dine in and see if there is a difference in the food. Good luck and welcome to the neighborhood.
Amazing place! Big variety of pastries, savory and sweet...the quintessential Colombian pan de Bono and some bigger plates such as la bandeja paisa small & large, it depends on your appetite...natural fruit juices as well; the only thing I would add is some alcoholic basic drinks...mojito, sangria etc.
This place is so good! I recently met their baker Jose who gave me some samples of his products.. They were out of this world delicious, he truly has a talent. I was convinced to try the restaurant and I was equally satisfied. If your looking for authentic Colombian food with pleasant service look no further!
Seemingly the only Colombian place in Manhattan (crazy, I know), but definitely worth trying out their whole menu. Baked goods are always fresh, and their takes on Colombian classics are amazing. The Bandeja Paisa is top notch and the chimichurri that comes with the Churrasco is heaven-sent. Their recently-expanded outdoor seating is super cute too. If I had to recommend one thing it would be the Pastel de Pollo y Queso (because it has a little bit of corn in it too). Great place to take indoor plant inspiration from too.
I came here for an espresso and a pastry and loved it. There is seating inside and outside and the vibe is great. But most importantly GET THE GUAVA GLORIA! It was so amazing. Flaky crust with I believe guava, dulce de leche and sweet cheese inside? Incredible. All their other pastries look amazing too.
I really like the food here. I just wish they had more options though, But what I have tired is so delicious. I love their pan de Bono and desserts. I have yet to try pastel Gloria. The employees are nice and accommodating. I’m glad that they finally opened a Colombian restaurant in Washington Heights.
Fantastic little Colombian spot, got an iced latte and a pastry similar to a banana bread. Both great, they have 5 or so milk options for coffee drinks and a wide range of pastries (they bake them all in-house from scratch). The people running this lovely spot were so kind and welcoming (and happy to explain the various pastries). Great addition to the neighborhood, excited to come back and try out some of their lunch offerings!
I have been here a few times. Wasnt gonna come back because this already happened once but I wanted a quick coffee not from the deli. So I just came in the main guy wants me to wear a mask which I have no problem doing. Meanwhile the guy asking me to wear a mask has his nose uncovered, there is a maskless man about 2 feet away from me sitting down and the kitchen guy is right behind him also maskless. Im fine following rules but this blatant stupidity is what makes me stop supporting small businesses like this one. Guy behind the counter also gave my coffee to another person. Took 10 minutes for a coffee.
Juancamilio has made the space super warm and inviting with great design features. All the pastries we tried were fresh and tasty, especially the pineapple turnover. It was so vibrantly pineapple-y! I am ordering the big breakfast today! Call ahead! Everyone speaks Spanish is such a plus. So happy this restaurant coffee place is a few blocks away from our apartment. The owners are wonderful people❤️❤️❤️
I Ordered a chicken and a meat empanada. Did not like the chicken empanada. The meat empanada was mostly potato. I like potato but I wanted a meat empanada. The shell of the empanada was on the stale side (very hard). The meat/Potatoe empanada a 3.2. If the empanada was made fresh(when ordered) it might taste better. I liked their green sauce, it was a bit spicy just the way I like it. The interior of the location is clean. They also offer free fresh water from a water jug without having to bother the cashier for a cup of water. That’s a big plus. I will give them another try midweek and attempt to order a fresh empanada instead of accepting one of the empanadas sitting in the clear glass warmer.
This reviews the 3 times I visited this place:1st Time: 5 StarsI went to this place during the first week of opening during the lockdown last year... It had so much potential. We felt welcomed by the owners, whom were still making the place look nice... Lots of construction going on... despite that fact, My wife at the time was pregnant, and they even let her use the bathroom...2nd Time: 3 StarsA few weeks later we went back, to get the Bandeja Paisa again, (my wife was still having cravings), and this time, the atmosphere was different... Although they let my wife use the bathroom, (still pregnant) it took us a lot of convincing in order for them to actually agreed. That is way 3 Stars = for bad customer service.3rd Time (this was supposed to be the charm)...Then, after a year I was in the area and I decided to swing by and get my wife the Bandeja Paisa that she loves so much. Tried calling the place to order and I could not get thru the line, the website didnt have an online order section, and I didnt want to use an app to place my order... After all, I was going to pick it up.I ended up going to the location; I placed my order and waited. To my surprise, I asked them to make sure they added Ají (a Colombian sauce that should come with the Bandeja Paisa)... And they told me that if wanted Ají, I should have told them before because it is charged extra ...REALLY??? (That would be like going to a Burger joint and pay for Ketchup for your fries...)When I told the staff I was there the week they opened and Aji was complementary... They made a face like So, this is a new restaurant policy...They lost me there... That is no the way to treat customers if you want them to come back...Absolutely ridiculous...Then, there is the price... Good flavours but it is way too pricey for a fried egg, rice & beans which takes most of the plater or Bandeja, a piece of Flank Skirt Steak, over-fried pork belly and a blood sausage...Unfortunately, this place lost valued customers yesterday. I do not think I will be coming back to Salento...
I ordered from them for the first time through Uber eats. It was horrible and extremely over priced. The only things that were good were the empanadas. Mainly the chicken one had flavor. Ive always eaten at Brownies in white plains Ny but decided to try this Columbias bakery for the first time. Never again!!! The pan de Bono was dense and oily, the buñuelo was not airy and light it was dense and extremely small for the price, lastly the arepa was the worst!!! The arepa was flavorless, falling apart, barely any cheese which was bland as well, and this was unbelievably $4. Definitely not worth the price at all!! It was a waste of money and I will never waste my money there again. Even the fresh spicy sauce they make was horrible. It was like they took it and seasoned it with water. NO FLAVOR AT ALL!! Do yourselves a favor and go to Brownies in White Plains, NY. You will not regret it at all.
When I visited my friend in the hospital, I brought her Salentos chicken soup. She loved it and then asked for more the next day I visited. Also, I was flustered and couldnt find my wallet. I thought I had left it at home. The cashier was so humane and offered to give me the soup and just let me call later and pay with my credit card over the phone. I ended up finding my wallet before I left, but I was so touched by her thoughtfulness.
The space is so cute! I havent had the chance to dine in, but the delivery was great. We ordered pan de bono, arepas, bandeja paisa, and pechuga de pollo. My roommates and I enjoyed it all! Everything was flavorful and prepared well. Our favorite was the pan de bono--so fluffy and cheesy. The portions are generous and there were plenty for leftovers. Im excited to order from Salento again! Follow them on Instagram too.
Living uptown means I have to commute somewhere to get something good to eat. It’s a luxury to have something literally on my block that I enjoy . Everyone is so nice at Salento, the vibe inside is intimate , and the food has yet to disappoint. The Pandebono is DANGEROUS and I’m so glad I have a gluten free option I can enjoy. The pollo a la plancha is a flavorful yet simple dish I can enjoy without feeling the guilt of calories but yet be satisfied. Overall good marks on my end.
The restaurant has a nice environment. It is very cozy. A nice place where you can sit to have a cup of coffee. I know some of the staff members and they are nice. However, the staff at the counter should be more trained. I have been there a couple of times and once the lady serving at the counter didn’t even know what a sweetener was. Also, I think the place should be pet friendly. I understand that restaurants have to be careful where pets are due to the food served, but as long as the pet is not in the kitchen or on a table where the food is served is fine. I have a very small dog, went there just to get coffee to go, and I made sure I held my dog, so it is not a disturbance to anybody; a little girl asked me to pet and hold the dog and I let her. My dog of course jumped out of her arms as she is not used to be with other people, so I quickly grabbed the dog and held it again. The person serving at the counter asked me if it was a service dog. I knew where this was going. I mean you see that I am holding the dog and i am getting coffee to go. Let it be, otherwise the place is going to lose customers. But, this doesn’t end here. He asked me to step out to wait for my coffee, which I didn’t mind. Once he brings out the coffee, he brings the sugar on the side. I am holding a dog. Where and how you want me to put the sugar in the coffee. Seriously!!! At least have the customer service manners to make things easier. I mean this is lack of customer service ethics. Lack of knowledge. This is a residential neighborhood, and you should expect dogs. If you want more clientele, you are going to have be pet friendly.
The pastries and empanadas are the best in the neighborhood. We had both the chicken and beef empanadas and they were delicious. Also, the pastries are very tasty, I would recommend the Gloria and Salento turnovers. The service is very friendly and fast. Everything is delicious here so just ask what is fresh out of the oven
🤩 Delicious food and excellent attention! My family and I feel very comfortable eating in Salento😊 we feel at home, the people who served us are very friendly.🤤 We ordered a Paisa tray, a Sancocho and some empanas, we couldnt miss the postobón apple and the malta pony 😆.The restaurant is clean, it is a family atmosphere, it has tables inside the business if you want with air conditioning or tables outside to enjoy the view!Thank you!💯% RECOMMENDED
Delicious Colombian food, the empanadas are good, especially the super crispy dough with its rich chili sauce, the buñuelos and the cambray are very divine. Carrot cake is very good too. For those who love a good espresso, you can also get one here. They offer a wide variety of products such as stuffed potatoes, cakes and the place is very nice and so is the attention.
I do not know how a place can provide an unbeatable experience on December 25 of this year where I asked for a paisa tray and they gave it to me on a plate, a very friendly lady attended and a cosinero with pure positive energy and today December 30 have made me feel sorry , any change, a supposed churrasco flooded with oil, some old potatoes or perhaps refritas, the attention or inattention of a rude cashier who demands a tip from customers who called by phone indicating that if they did not give tip they would not do the delivery, the same 25 they served me on plates and this time in a container as if it were a deli, my brothers face with anger at such an absurd dish.It is sad that I recommended this business to my friends and I will not be able to do it againI dont know how a place can provide an unbeatable experience on December 25th of this year where I asked for a pause tray and they gave it to me on a “traypaisa”, a very friendly lady attended and a cosinero with pure positive energy and today December 30 have made me feel sorry, any change, a supposed churrasco flooded with oil, some old potatoes or perhaps refried ones, the attention or inattention of a rude cashier who demands a tip from customers who called by phone indicating that if they did not give a tip they would not make the delivery, the same 25 they served me on plates and this time in a container as if it were a deli, my brothers face with anger at such an absurd dish.It is sad that I recommended this business to my friends and I will not be able to do it again
The Colombian restaurant, Salento, located at 2112 Amsterdam ave. in New York, it fell short with its slogan Colombian flavor, because its typical dishes exceed the originality that the Colombian culture has assigned to each one of them, to such an extent that their preparation, components, quality and service, even offered by its owner Misael, his collaborators Elvis and Melanie, they take us on a tour of each of the thermal floors that rise and fall from the slopes in each mountain range, and that fills us with national pride, which evokes truly sharing a morning , a Colombian afternoon or night in New York, thats why we love that Colombian embassy, which makes us proud and makes us HAPPY. We invite all Colombians who come to New York to come and try their exquisite dishes, a paisa tray, warming up among many more, and not to mention Colombian coffee and chocolate. 🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴Jose Ignacio Arias 💛💛💛🇨🇴💛🇨🇴🇨🇴

2022-06-05Found this place after walking across Highbridge. The food was amazing and authentic Colombian. It’s a small place but the service was warm and friendly. The portions were great. The place needs a bit of upkeep, but it was worth the visit.

2022-07-23This was an amazing breakfast experience! While theyre know for being a coffee/bakery place, they have a handful of signature breakfast items on the menu that I ordered. The restaurant was very clean, with plenty of outside seating. The barista/server was so incredibly friendly and accommodating. The staff was fluently Bilingual in Spanish and English.I ordered the Calentado, which is Columbian style stir fry of rice and beans, with pork rind, 2 eggs, and an arepa on the side. The rice and beans was so flavorful! The food came out hot. Couldnt recommend this lovely gem of a place more!

2021-10-03Just a word: scrumdiddlyumptious!!The best coffee shop in the Washington heights area. I had the chicken empanada, buñuelo guava/cheese and the glorious pastel Gloria a perfect pastry filled with guava, cheese and dulce de leche, absolutely gorgeous!! Also didn’t need to add sugar in my coffee, it had a really great taste by itself. The staff Melanie and Elvis were really helpful and nice. Highly recommend!!

2022-01-22Walking by, I saw the mural outside on the street (wax palm trees -Cocora Valley, Colombia) and felt familiarity with the place. There it was, Salento! Restaurants named after a beautiful town in Colombia, where the coffee is all about. Without hesitation, my partner and I decided to go in for lunch. Greeting was poor, the couple behind the counter made us decide for the dish we wanted, pay before hand and of course leave the 20% tip at front.I wondered were we were going to sit. They said, in the back if you like. So we paid $71.00 for 2 main dishes for lunch and 2 waters. A little bit pricey, I thought, but I was curious about the food. A bandeja paisa arrived, a puffy large portion, the protein part of the dish was more fat than meat. The churrasco was ok.My perception of Salento was that it had opened last week, upon seeing all new, clean and the lack of experience by the gentleman with the hat and the lady behind the counter.

2022-08-20I have been a frequent guest at this cafe. I love their coffee and pastries. They do offer other breakfast items. Is my favorite coffee shop in the neighborhood. The place is clean and the employees are very nice. I’ll give them 4 stars just because their service is slow . However , I do recommend this place .

2021-10-03I was waiting for a nice day out to finally try this place and the food is great. I asked for a Calentado which was the stir fried rice and beans and fried egg arepa combination. It was delicious and more than filling. My son had the Arepa burger and fries he loved it and My stir fried rice and beans. Elaine was so kind and descriptive with the food and pastries. We are taking to the park some cafecito, lemonade & the panbono and cake. :)

2022-08-14I was excited to try this place but it was really disappointing. Coffee was not good (pictures for reference) and breakfast was served in tinfoil, even though we got “service” charged.

2022-04-26A lovely addition to the neighborhood! I don’t live around here but I do work in the hospital just a few blocks down. There are no Colombian bakeries/coffee shop in this neighborhood so I’m so glad Salento opened up early this year.I’ve had their pan de bono (yum!), buñuelos, guava+cheese, chicken & cheese and mushrooms chicharrón, and they’re all delicious and satisfying. Their coffee is equally satisfying (def pricier than the average coffee in the neighborhood). Also, I love the interior design of this place. You walk into this inviting coffee shop with plants hanging on the wall and warm lights in the counter area.(Totally being picky, but if the owner reads this: the trash can is at such an awkward place, right in front of the counter; perhaps placing it to the side is better)Update: I do still appreciate this place but the service has gotten slower and sloooooower. It’s frustrating at times, so if you’re in a hurry, better go elsewhere, like Carrot Top on Broadway or elsewhere.

2021-07-07A friend of mine loves this place and took us there last Saturday for late lunch as she was craving for their bandeja paisa with steak. As it was my first time, I ordered the bistec encebollado since from the description, it seemed similar to other dishes Ive tried before, and I also got several pastries (mostly to go, but I might have eaten one or two while waiting for our lunch). The bistec was good, but I think I should have gone with the bandeja paisa like my friend. It is big enough to share with 1 or 2 other people (or you can take your leftover to go and you have food for 1 or 2 more meals). From what I remember, it had chicharron, chorizo, steak, I think a blood sausage, arepa, sweet plantains, rice, beans and a fried egg. I tried the chicharron and chorizo... they were delicious.I also got several pastries/snacks... aborrajado, salento, pastel de pollo con champinones, and a round pastry shaped like a donut with guava jelly inside (this might have been the bunuelos de queso y guayaba, but I dont recall if it had cheese or not). All were good, but my favorites were the salento and the aborrajado.
