Its often nerve-wracking to buy a nice guitar online, sight-unseen. However, spending a few minutes on the Savage Classical Guitar website quickly put those fears to rest. Rich Sayage describes each instrument in extensive detail, highlighting its unique qualities and strengths. He provides excellent sound clips usually around 10 or more minutes in length playing the very instrument in that particular listing, meaning you get plenty of time to listen as Rich moves all around the guitar, putting it through its paces in several tonal registers. The fact that Rich is an outstanding guitarist means you get an honest representation of how the instrument really sounds. As he plays, he provides periodic commentary telling us his first impressions, and he points out various aspects of that guitar in relation to its build quality, resonance, sustain, finish, neck details, etc. He really leaves no question unanswered, but is still more than happy to take phone calls (which he answers) or emails (which he returns quickly). I found Rich to be very friendly, a straight shooter, and extremely knowledgeable about his craft. I quickly decided that I would be buying a guitar from Rich that day. True to his word, Rich did a final inspection and polish on the guitar before packing, performed a setup that was done to perfection, professionally and thoroughly packed the guitar, and shipped it FedEx, arriving at my door two days later. The guitar was everything I was looking for both aesthetically and tonally. Plus, Rich includes a very nice accessory package with his guitars. I couldnt be happier with my sight-unseen purchase. Rich is a guy you can absolutely trust with your guitar purchase, and I am happy to give Rich and Savage Classical Guitars my highest recommendation and thanks for a great experience!
I’m not one to normally leave reviews. And even if I do, I normally don’t go beyond 4 stars because I feel there’s always room for improvement. Savage Classical Guitar is different though. I went in yesterday to buy a classical guitar and I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted. Rich was extremely accommodating, knowledgeable, and helpful. He didn’t point me to the most expensive guitar at the top of my price range. He pointed me to the one that fit me best. I highly recommend anyone interested in a classical guitar to go there. The experience was perfect and they’ve got 2 great guys who love music working there.
Excellent experience all around. From the customer service to the way the instrument was shipped, couldnt have asked for anything better. Looking forward to doing business with Savage Classical Guitar again in the future. If anyone has hesitations about ordering a guitar and having it shipped, dont hesitate. I am extremely happy with the guitar and the whole experience buying. I spent a couple of hours playing the f11 (still tuned down for a bit) and I love it. Rich was spot on in his on-line description - it is very warm, comfortable and easy to play. For my fatter fingers, the slightly wider nut dimension makes a difference too. In comparison to my other 2 flamenco guitars, the f11 has more depth and range of color - its even pretty powerful. I swapped back and forth between my Camps and Alhambra - then back to the f11 - it was like when Dorothy steps into Oz - technicolor. Well, maybe not so dramatic, but a definite sensation. It is a tremendous value for the money and generously offers so much for an intermediate player like me.I also really appreciated the way Rich packed it - as if I was buying the Daniel Friederich :-). Everything - the internal stabilization, Mylar, additional plastic and padding. The instrument arrived in perfect condition and at room temperature. And the extra care package took the experience over the top. I normally play La Bella 2001 Flamenco Light Tension strings, so his choice of strings was also eerily right on. Savage Classical Guitars strings sound great and are comfortable, I will start to buy from them.I am absolutely thrilled. Thank you so much. After years of playing guitar, I decided to start a serious study of classical guitar. While I had a nylon string, I really needed a traditional classical guitar. One name kept coming up in my searches of specific models - Savage Classical Guitar. Not being an expert on classical I sent number of questions. Each time Rich replied right away, always with great information. Also the pictures and especially the sound clips on the site were super helpful.After deciding on which model, Rich got it ordered, then set up and then shipped when ready. When I got it I was surprised to find a guitar ready to play, and some extra accessories thrown in. Earlier this summer, along with my wife, I paid a visit to Savage Guitars to purchase a new instrument. I wanted to share my experience of that visit.First, what drew me to the store was the website. It is very well organized and allowed me to search via price range as well as individual luthier. The amount of information available for each guitar is pretty impressive. The pictures are of very high quality. There is more information than you will ever need regarding measurements, materials, and craftsmanship. Each guitar also has an audio link that allows you to listen.We were very impressed when we entered the shop at how clean it was and how the rows and rows of guitars adorned the walls, all attached to tags clearly identifying each instrument.One thing that Richard does before he will let you demo a guitar is give clear and precise instructions on how to handle them. At first, you may think it a bit strict. But, consider this: he has stewardship of 100’s of guitars and cannot afford his instruments to be mishandled and marred up with scratches. So, take his advice and leave you bad handling guitar habits at the door.I had a list of close to 8 guitars I wanted to audition and he quickly pulled them down for me.As I narrowed down my selection to 3 or 4, he put them on stands and left the room and let me take my time to make a choice. Zero pressure.While there, we had the pleasure to observe Richard in the middle of taking measurements of his instruments while having the info entered into a computer file by his assistant. I asked him why he did this and he said it was to keep track of the instruments to make sure that everything remained stable (his room is humidity controlled). That was impressive, and a lot of work for all of his inventory.After narrowing down my selection, I finally made my decision on a custom made classical hybrid from a builder in San Diego. An instrument I will treasure for the rest of my life.My only problem with the whole experience was that I had too many good guitars to choose from!If you are looking to purchase a new, or used, guitar do not hesitate to make an appointment at this shop. I don’t think you’ll find more high end inventory anywhere on the East Coast. If you are looking to consign a guitar, then it couldn’t be in any better hands than Richard Savage.Highly recommended.

I couldnt be happier with my online purchase of a Hill New World Player guitar. All my questions were answered (quickly) and I felt like I was treated like I was Richs only customer. The ultimate guitar guitar experience. I was searching for a concert classical guitar and had visited a number of dealers, stores and private collectors however Savage Classical Guitar was above and beyond all of them in terms of inventory, quality of instruments and so much more. I was met by Rich and we sat and discussed what I was looking for, immediately it was a very comfortable environment and I could tell he wanted to find the right guitar for me. I played on about fifteen guitars I had made a list of from viewing his online store for several hours. Rich would provide detailed descriptions of the instruments and their makers and play for me if I wanted to take the role of the listener. The following day after narrowing down the choices, I cycled through the best instruments for me for a number of hours and came away with the perfect guitar for all of my needs. If you are looking to buy a guitar look no further, this is the place. Nothing matches it and the wonderful treatment you will receive. Seriously, go there, even if you have to fly, or drive for hours on end, every moment of the experience is worth it.

I recently purchased a vintage Ramirez 1a from Savage Classical Guitar.The entire process from initial emails to auditioning the guitar for as long as I wanted, was a positive experience, so I felt compelled to share my thoughts.Rich Sayage is a ‘straight shooter’. Honest and straightforward.There is no pressure. There’s no hype. I came across savage guitar looking for the right place to purchase my next high end classical guitar. I was ready to commit to a quality classical guitar, but living in rural Alaska means an online search. I kept going back to the Savage Guitar site, because of the thorough descriptions, excellent photos and, most of all, the sound bites of each guitar played by the owner, Rich Sayage. I had a phone conversation and exchanged several emails with Rich, who really personalized the entire experience for me. I selected my guitar on April 16, placed the order that night and the guitar was in my hands on April 19th. Now remember, I’m in Alaska! Before you buy a classical guitar, make an appointment and go to Savage Classical Guitar. It doesnt matter if you have to get on a plane to get there. It will be worth it.I wanted to buy a classical guitar and I visited all of the big name stores. I couldnt find what I wanted at the right price price. Then I dropped by Savage Classical Guitar. Rich sat down with me before doing anything else and learned about me. He didnt rush me. He wanted to know what I hoped to get out of a guitar, what kind of music I wanted to play, even what kind of person I was. After this, we went into his studio. As he went off to find a few guitars that would suit my needs, I looked at the tags on the rows of cases... vintage guitars, luthier built custom guitars... I was drooling. The selection is HUGE. I have not seen anywhere else with an inventory even approaching a fraction of what this guy has in stock. Just check out the website to see what I mean. Im pretty sure that everything on the website is in stock.Then the guitars selected specifically for me came out. I was given plenty of time to play each one. They were all very well cared for with clean new strings. I am really not a good guitar player, but I didnt get any sense that I didnt belong there. Rich even was kind enough to play each one for me so I could hear what they sound like, he is also a capable player.I was not immediately ready to make a purchase that day, but a month later, I returned and purchased the guitar that really made an impression on me. Rich made sure that the guitar was everything I hoped it would be, even going over every inch to make sure that if there were any issues that could be addressed, they would be fixed before I walked out the door.He provided me also with lots of information... what music books to buy, names of local teachers, how to care for the instrument, etc.Through the whole process, I didnt feel pressured at any moment. I also didnt feel that I was getting anything but the best deal that I could. I cant say enough good things about Savage Classical Guitar. Go there!!!

Had been looking for sometime for transcriptions with tablature of Bachs Cello Suites, and Rich has done an amazing job of transcribing and notation. With the quality of binding and paper stock the books exceeded my expectations. Richs friendly communications were icing on the cake. I have been aware of Savage Guitars web site for some time, so when it came time to purchase a new guitar (once every 2-3 years or so for me) I called Rich Sayage to make an appointment.Im a serious advanced player, and knew that I wanted a 640 (smaller scale length) guitar, and Rich had a wonderful selection of at least a dozen guitars that matched my criteria.I drove to Bay Shore this past Saturday ( a 3hr trip for me) and was not disappointed.Rich spent over 4 hours with me showing me 10 guitars by several well known luthiers. All were fine instruments in impeccable condition. I narrowed my selection down to three guitars and eventually chose a magnificent cedar double top Kenny Hill Signature.I spent a wonderful afternoon getting to know Rich. We talked about golf, our pet cats, the economy, the environment, politics, and of course we talked about (and played) guitars. I found Rich to very knowledgeable about his guitars and luthier art and craft, and I suspect that no where else on the east coast will you find a selection of fine guitars of this scope and magnitude.To summarize, I had a wonderful experience doing business with Rich, and more than that, I feel that I have made a new friend.Thank you, Rich Sayage! Having decided that my 650mm classical guitar did not quite fit me, I began a search to find a better fit. I was quite fortunate to stumble upon Savage Classical Guitars. Not the only place I contacted, Rich Sayage was the most focused on helping me find the perfect guitar for me. He was attentive to my wishes and in no time at all, suggested several smaller scale instruments that he thought would work for me. After narrowing down to 2 guitars, Rich recorded both instruments and sent me mp3 files. After comparing the specs of both instruments and listening to the sound bites, I selected a guitar and placed the order. The next day, BAM!, the guitar appeared. Its a match made in heaven, Im in love. Thank you Rich for your attentive response and assistance in my search.
My search for a particular flamenco guitar led me to the virtual doorstep of one Rich Sayage of Savage Classical Guitars. My location in the Midwest did not permit me to take advantage of a person to person appointment with Mr. Sayage (which is the best way to chose and audition a fine musical instrument of course and is recommended). My advantage in this instance was that I already possess a guitar by the luthier of the instrument which I sought and had great confidence in the acquisition of a similar model (of different woods and build). The photographs and audio examples( on his site) of the guitar were very helpful as well. I contacted Mr. Sayage by phone and explained in detail the exact specifications that I required in terms of string height and neck profile-I also sent a couple of audio files of my own for him to exam with regard to execution and touch. He personally inspected the instrument (a previously owned guitar) and assured me that the guitar was nearly flawless to begin with and that he could make the adjustments to the action as it were and we agreed on terms and shipping. Over the course of several phone calls and email exchanges, I found Mr. Sayage cordial and very responsive. When I received the instrument, I knew within minutes that I had found the exact guitar that I wanted and an individual who understood the instrument intimately and who responded professionally in all matters of this purchase.
Rich is knowledgeable and passionate about his work and is great to deal with! He gave me lots of time and was extremely helpful. I recommend his studio to any guitarist. The service is excellent. (The world class inventory speaks for itself!)
Googled music store near me and found this place. This was maybe two maybe even three years ago. It was completely unexpected, he sells out of his home and his collection of instruments is fantastic. Beautiful sound. Thats what its all about. Want a mass produced guitar? He might have one that he thought sounds better then their identical twins. What hes really about is instruments that meet his high standards of sound production. I truly believe he had personally played every single instrument in his inventory prior to deciding that it belonged there.

2021-10-10I recently ordered a Kenny Hill Player (World Series) 640 mm Spruce with elevated fretboard and ports. It arrived 3 weeks ago and I am very happy with this guitar. The scale is just right for my finger span. The sound is well balanced and transparent, sonorous in the lower and bright in the higher frequencies. 2021-11-01I recently purchased a lovely Beneteau 000c steel string guitar from Savage Classical Guitars. Having owned and played many high-end acoustic guitars over a lifetime of playing, I must say I was particularly impressed by Richards professionalism and his promptness in answering my questions and in providing supplemental info about the guitar. Moreover, having packed and shipped many guitars myself, I found Richards attention to detail in packing the instrument to simply be the best Ive ever seen, period! 2022-02-21Before I get too distracted by my new guitar and lose all interest in everything except playing, I want to get some thoughts down about my experience purchasing a new guitar from Savage Classical Guitar. I first contacted Savage about a year ago to do some set up on the guitar I was then playing. I was impressed with the quality and level of service and blown away by the inventory. I knew then that when the time came to improve my instrument, I would be back.I purchased the Maxwell Sipe #60. I am already finding it to be the guitar of my dreams. It is superbly balanced, the tone is stunning and holding it is like embracing an old friend. Rich Savage was the matchmaker who put the two of us together.I want to focus my comments on Rich’s matchmaking role. First off, the guitar was beautifully set up. It is a far better guitar than I am a player, but I felt no condescension on Rich’s part. I was able to spend the better part of a day playing different instruments within my price range. Rich exhibited patience and a willingness to continue showing me more instruments.Rich hit the right balance between attentiveness and simply leaving me alone with the guitars to experience each instrument in peace and quiet. Rich may be an opinionated guy (about all kinds of stuff), but he kept those opinions under wraps as I engaged in my own exploration of the many options he tendered for my consideration. Because of my limitations as a player, I was impressed by Rich’s willingness to accede to my request that he play the three finalists for my blind listening, giving me the opportunity to experience each instrument in the hands of a far better player.Don Lundberg

2022-01-25My experience with Rich and Savage Classical Guitar was excellent. I reached out to Rich to schedule a time to visit and try various guitars during a business trip to the US east coast. Rich was very accommodating in setting up an appointment that worked with my schedule. When I arrived Rich and his assistant were very supportive. I tried a variety of guitars. They allowed me to play as long as I wanted and Rich even played some of them as I began my down-selection. After over three hours in the store I chose Wilson Burnhams Elena. We quickly closed the sale and I left for my return home. My visit was on Friday and the guitar arrived on Monday. The packaging was excellent and the accessory pack that Rich included was a very nice extra. After letting the guitar equilibrate for 3 hours, I opened the box and began playing. Now the fun part begins! Thank you Rich.

2022-02-14I just received my new Kenny Hill Signature and was both amazed and completely pleased with the purchase. The guitar was even better than I expected. It’s the first classical that I’ve ever had with an elevated fretboard and I was amazed how much easier it played. And the sound from this beauty is just amazing. It even makes me sound good!! As you would expect from Kenny Hill, the workmanship is impeccable and the sound awesome. I have another luthier made guitar and the difference in quality is amazing. The Signature is everything I wanted and more. I couldn’t be more pleased with my purchase.Now let me talk a minute about Rich. 2022-03-29I had been playing my old Cordoba C7 for quite a while and figured it was time for a significant upgrade, so I contacted Savage. I wasnt familiar with the process of buying a classical guitar, but Rich took the time to help me find out what just I was looking for. I had the chance to play several guitars which Rich selected and set out for me, with as much time as I needed to try out each. As a result, I was able to find a guitar I absolutely love, a 2020 Manuel Adalid Hauser, of which I am now the proud owner! Rich went the extra mile to explain proper maintenance for the guitar, and even threw in some bonus care products. Top notch buying experience and service!

Not only am I extremely happy with the guitar, but my experience during the purchase of this fine instrument was most excellent. Richs website has many high quality pics of the guitars for sale along with detailed descriptions and specs and very often an mp3 track as well. I communicated with Rich about the guitar both by email and by phone. Rich answered all my questions in great detail. It was a pleasure speaking with him. The guitar I received arrived beautifully. It was as good and even better than described on the website. I would highly recommend Savage Classic Guitar as a great place to purchase a fine instrument. No matter if you are looking for a moderately priced guitar or concert level instrument of the highest caliber, Rich has a large inventory of guitars. There is something for every level of classical guitarist. Both amateur and professional alike. Besides receiving a guitar that was very well packed and shipped, there was some nice case candy too! 2021-10-30Rich really knows his stuff. I just received the guitar I ordered and it is beautiful. Not only does Rich answer all your questions knowledgeably, but the entire process from searching for a guitar to purchasing one is incredibly fun. I needed to have my guitar switched to left-handed, and it was done and shipped out very quickly. I cant say enough good things about Rich and his company. Im so glad I bought from Savage Classical Guitar!

2021-11-02Overall a great experience in buying the ported Cedar Kenny Hill New World Player. The price point is very good for what you get and I was surprised in how open and lively this guitar is since it is brand new.The guitar sounds like it is ready for recordings and performances which is something I didnt expect at this price. I had a higher-end Cordoba that took a long time to open up. Turned out to be a great instrument just needed some time.Rich was very responsive and had the guitar shipped asap and arrived safely packaged at my doorstep in mid-state Maine in just a few days.

2021-10-30Go Savage. An amazing experience. I went to Savage on the recommendation of my guitar teacher, as I was ready to dramatically upgrade my guitar. And it was a spectacular experience. I ended up with exactly the guitar (the baby) i wanted but didnt know I needed until I met her. And Rich is deeply knowledgeable, really helpful and quite the opposite of pushy. He made me feel at home - no small thing as an amateur classical guitarist at sea in a room filled with concert instruments, and helped me feel confident in my choice. Cant recommend Rich and Savage guitar highly enough. (I bought a beautiful, incredible sounding guitar from the Canadian luthier Jeremy Clark.) If youre looking for a classical guitar, go Savage.
