The Schenectady Public Library is a jewel in the City of Schenectady. There are a variety of services available for patrons- please check the website. The library has certainly seen its share of mixed uses since the pandemic started such as a voting place or COVID vaccine site, and this past weekend held the first book sale of the year! The staff at the library is more than willing to help all who enter or call. If you dont have a library card, get one to take advantage of the books and various services.( I am on the Board of the Friends of Schenectady Public Library).
The staff here has the usual civil service attitude -- arrogance without foundation. This is made worse by the impoverished collection. While understanding this is a library in country town absent metropolitan resources with a perhaps less demanding patronage, one expects more could be done. Less gifted staff could be replaced by fewer, better paid and more able people; such a staff might at once better gauge the present tastes of patrons while developing an acquisition strategy likely to encourage and develop greater sophistication.
Says they close at 5 on Fridays so I went to get a new library card and they said that I had to come back tomorrow because they stop doing that 15 minutes before closing. No where on the website does it say we stop everything 15 minutes early it says we close at 5 therefore I should be able to go there before 5 and get a new library card that takes 2 minutes to do
I have changed my review.due to the fact that the place has improved alot. And they have alot of good activities even free classical music .from the students of music from the locals colleges. The staff its helpful. And they will oder a movie or a book from another branch if you need it.
So i am a student in 9th Grade and since you guys have the I Survived series i have to do Questions why do you guys have to have the specific book is called i Survived Hurricane Katrina Book by Lauren Tarshis and you guys just ruined my Fun so thanks schenectady public Library i could have just Listened to the book on Sora and That would have been so much easier To just listen to the audio book on the internet and Playing my computer Game
Hostile, Venal & Vindictive - SCPL went out of their way to email my home library, untruthfully claiming I was rude during a phone call which took place on 23 Jan 2020. Luckily, the call was witnessed by a staff person at my home library who was able to refute the SCPL staff persons claim. Watch your backs. YIKES!!!
On March 13, 2019, Schenectady County Public Librarys Main Branch is now named after Karen Johnson, who became mayor of Schenectady back in 1983, 50 years after it was built in 1969. Her name appears just above the words: Schenectady County Public Library, and her name is right next to the word: HON., like what this computer rendering shows, in front of the building

2022-05-01Not sure how one of help desk assigned person, new one, got a job as IT specialist 1 in library but for sure he needs more training especially with the equipment, printer and how to release jammed pages. No clue how he got that job, apparently like entire others within City of Schenectady..Have a great the rest of your weekend, everyone.😍😍😍

2018-09-02I love this library. It is the example of a central library location. Staff are friendly and helpful. Knowledgeable too! There is always fun exhibits and stuff to do. Today they had a display of Star Wars toys. Too fun! Always a good stop. Highly recommend. If you found this review helpful please let me know byliking it. Thanks.

2021-10-07I usually go to the library just to use their computers. (My LG tablet wont let me read my older e-mails.)Its been quite a while since I have taken out a book...(Sorry book lovers!!!) Anyway, the only issue that I have is that you have to sign in at the entrance...with your name, phone number and e-mail. (I guess for contact tracing???) I dont mind that too much, but Im kinda leery about it being out in the open for just anyone to read. I just hope that some library person is watching the people that sign in.Other than that its a very good local library.

2021-12-03Library staff were very rude. Basically pushed my wife’s out the door because they wanted to “leave on time”. It was 4 minutes before closing. I’ll be stopping by to speak to a manager.

2021-08-10Made it back to the library today and got my card updated. Managed to find the latest Malcolm Gladwell book to keep me busy for the week. As always, I was well attended to and help was abundant. A good experience as always and a trip that was missed during Covid.

2021-01-14Not sure whats going on with the Niskayuna branch but I returned a book to them about 9 or 10 days ago by putting i in the return bid and was charged a $5.00 late fee even though I returned it several days before it was due. When I called the person I talked to acted like I was lying but took the fee off. Now I returned a couple books 5 days ago and they still havent been checked in. I cant believe Im the only one with this issue I just hope they dont scam some poor little old lady by tell her her return was late even though in reality it wasnt.
