School of Rock in other cities:
School of Rock continues to be a wonderful experience! I never thought that I would be able to play guitar as I am now. It has given me music in my life and wonderful new friendships, that I was not expecting. The 1st day I started I was able to play 3 chords. Yesterday I soloed on the song Soulshine by The Allman Brothers.
I did the SOR adult program and it was a great success. The instructors are all great musicians and really know how to strike a balance between teaching students song structure and being loose and having fun. Getting up on stage and performing was truly a memorable experience.
My 9 year old daughter has been in the school of Rock for about 2+ years. She had been taking 1-on-1 classes elsewhere. She had learned to play a couple basic songs. When I read about School of Rock I decided to give it a try. I was skeptical at first. Instead of learning to play songs as she had been doing before, she was practicing chords, and parts of songs, scales and so on. Then she performed at Nyack Farmers Market. She played guitar one song, bass one song, and sang one song. For me it was like being back stage for a U2 concert. Nothing can describe seeing your kid perform in a band. That was after less than a year with School of Rock. A year later, I get it. Now she is truly a musician. Not someone who can play a song or two, but a musician. One of those mysterious people who just understands music. She is rehearsing for a concert at the Pearl River Brew House. More complicated parts, more singing. Yes I am excited about that, and my wife and I are amazed at the sounds she can coax out of her guitar. But a few days ago I bought my 4 year old son a drum set. This is something my wife and I wouldnt have considered before SOC. We dont have a great place to put a drum set, and he is only 4. But now it is a different equation. I bought a guitar for Taylor when she was 5 and LOOK AT HER NOW. So, after Nathan bangs on his drums, Taylor sat down. She has never touched a drumstick. She starts playing recognizable beats. Just from observing the drummers at SOC - and from the understanding of music that has evidently become ingrained in her. There are the other ineffable benefits as well, such as confidence and work ethic - I no longer have to force her to practice, because as a part of a band, she WANTS to be good. And she has finally grasped the concept that she actually can get good at anything she sets her mind to, as long as she works hard at it. Yep, worth every penny. As a final note, from what I have seen, Shuman and his staff are amazing with the kids.
What a great experience! I participated in the adult summer program and learned great hits like Radar Love by Golden Earring, Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf, One Big Holiday by My Morning Jacket. The instructors were all true pros. Their emphasis on having fun and connecting with the music led to an accelerated learning experience. ... And performing for a live audience is a great life experience.
Overall an outstanding show. The only suggestion I have for next time is to have a set-list for parents, that includes which kids are playing which songs, so we know when our kids will be on stage. That way we can make room for other parents when our kids are not performing. Otherwise a really great afternoon! Thank you.

2022-03-02My daughter LOVES School Of Rock! It has become her home away from home. She feels so comfortable being herself there. She has made amazing friends and loves all the teachers there! The teachers are always there for her for when she has a question, needs a supporting pep talk, or advice. They have created a great balance of keeping things fun but also challenging to push her further. SOR is my daughter’s favorite place to be!

2022-03-03My son has been going to SOR in Orangeburg for about 1 year. He LOVES it. The lesson set up is great: He gets 45 mins weekly for 1:1 private lesson, then he gets a group practice (mini band) for 90 mins weekly. Don (CEO) does a great job on keeping us informed of changes during Covid, and they are very flexible in accommodating our schedule.

2022-03-02Our son has been at SOR Orangeburg for over 6 years now, and its such a huge part of his life. Now, as part of the House Band, he and his bandmates absolutely shred. The owner, Don, and his staff are amazing instructors, coaches, and mentors. I wish SOR was around when I was a kid... I would have had a much more rich and fulfilling music experience than what is offered at public schools.

2021-11-09My son is 11 years old, and had been taking private guitar lessons for 5 years. He had reached a point where he wanted to enhance his passion for playing. School of Rock(SOR)in Orangeburg gave him that opportunity. My son loves the rock group environment, as well as his private lessons with his teacher Alex Prol. Alex is very enthusiastic, motivational and has the expertise to correct and enhance guitar playing. The owner of the SOR, Don, is very communicative and very involved with his staff and students. When my son picks up his guitar and starts playing, I feel like I’m listening to a young professional. I look forward to watching my son play with his SOR band in a few months, and I thank all of the talented instructors for making this possible.Armen

2021-07-12My 11-yr-old daughter participated in a one-week summer rock camp and had a great time. I appreciated how communicative both the instructor and owner were about scheduling and overviews of daily activities. And the final day concert was impressive -- they were able to present 6 songs in such a short period of time! My daughter had no previous singing experience and she felt welcomed and included and hopes to participate again in the future!
