This used to be one of my favorite restaurants when it opened in 2017, with a creative menu that fused the best of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, excellent service, and transparent pricing.Unfortunately the two times I’ve been there in the last few months it seems to have gone downhill1. Service deterioration. We had to wait 20 mins for a reserved table. Quite understandable, but there was no apology and almost an indifference2. Huge increase in prices compared to other mid-level NYC restaurants. No entree below 40 and only one appetizer below 203. Double-tipping - they now embed a 20% service charge, and then give an unsuspecting customer a chance to add 18%, 20% or 22% on top of that. Your $48 entree could cost you almost $75 with tax
We had a wonderful time here with really incredible food. The starters were large and delicious. I got one of the cocktails which again was quite large and delicious.Mains we got sushi and nigiri which was delicious.Dessert we got a banana tart and the churros and they were both filling and amazing.Really there were no issues with the food. It was delicious and they were very accommodating for gluten free. One main issue which is a big one for us is that the staff refused to put any of our order in until we ordered our mains. We asked them to bring us our starters and then we would order our mains based on how large the starters were but they refused. They wanted us finished with ordering before they would bring any of it to the kitchen.
I came in early the bar was full and took the last empty seat. I’d been waiting to dine here, based on personal reviews and the menu. I could not have been more disappointed. There was a bartender who clearly needed help. For the 15 people in the restaurant total, 8 at the bar, it shouldn’t have been such a slow process, he took 15 min to take my order, and few more to get my drinks. I was ignored by the entire staff other than the host for the next 45 min. The other bartender who came on finally noticed I had my card out and closed my tab, offered me a drink for the inconvenience, but my experience has been ruined. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food, my suggestion is to get a table, and hope you have a better experience. Avoid the bar
Very interesting concept, and its a very special ambiance for kosher food. Apparently the owner is Jewish and converted it to Kosher back in August 2021. They have a very professional staff and a nice cocktail menu.In terms of drinks, I had the gingersnap, which is bourbon, dark rum, gingerbread syrup and amaretto. I also had the Negroni San, which is kinobi gin, fog liquor, sake, honey bitters. They were strong and balanced. Ideally they would stock themselves with some additional craft beer like IPAs or sours considering the location in midtown. Honestly we probably should have tried the sake because Im sure it was great. For starters, we had the dumplings, miso eggplant (really good texture and flavor), and a bunch of random sushi rolls. Im pretty picky about sushi and honestly for $27 I didnt find anything that special about these rolls. Each one seemingly had a random ingredient that felt like it threw the roll off. The bagel roll had something crunchy (asparagus?), and the Hamachi roll tasted like it had olives in it, and there was no integrated sauce or tempura. Also, the crunchy rice wasnt done right, wish it was split into 6 pieces with fish on top so people could share it - this one was two massive crunchy rice balls and the fish and sauce on the side, so it was awkward trying to split. After recently going to Lure fishbar and Catch, these rolls didnt impress me. However, everything was very fresh, and service was fast. In terms of apps, Id take a look at Wall Street Grills crunchy saucy chicken appetizers. For the mains, I tried the cheese burger which had some great sauces, but the burger itself felt dense. Same thing with the steak, but that was probably because it was ordered medium well. The other mains were pretty good. For dessert we got the carrot cake and the churros and both were excellent and came with some really good non dairy ice cream. All in all, there is tremendous potential here. The location is far better than Reserve and Wall St Grill downtown. However, stacked up against them, I wouldnt say the food is as good. Id say its comparable and potentially less expensive (we paid $150 per person versus $200 per person there), and note gratuity is included.
Prior to Covid Sen Sakana was one of my my go to client entertainment spots. Being a block away from my office the fantastic cocktails and highquality food made it perfect.I visited a few weeks back on a Monday and experienced something much different then prior times. I sat at the bar and order the omakase. Opposed to the usual bartender engagement and light banter I was used to, I had the privilege of listening to the bartender and one of the servers talk about how many bud lights they had shotgunned that weekend. Furthermore, the fish was not of high quality. To finish things off I noticed on the check that they are now charging a service charge and giving the opportunity to tip. Previously they were a no tip establishment and this approach feels like poor business practice.
If there would be a option of more then 5 stars I would give more, I don’t even have one bad thing to say, got the table within 1 minute, everything was beautiful and clean, the Atmosphere is great, the service is great and fast, the drinks are yummy, the food is yummy, each and everything we had was absolutely delicious, we had most of the things on the menu and didn’t have one bad thing to say, everything is plated beautifully, and the Manager Michal is a great man! The only thing I can say is that I give them a 👍
If you haven’t yet tried Sen Sakana, you have been missing out. It’s walking distance from Bryant Park and their ceviche and sea bass can rival some of the best native Central and South American restaurants. The appetizers are the feast for the senses: you won’t be able to put down your fork (or the chopsticks since it serves both Japanese and Peruvian dishes). The desert is equally enticing and delicious. Definitely deserves a Michelin star award for ingenuity, execution and delivery. Perfection!
Loved the food! The mushroom empanada and the croquette appetizers are delicious, the miso mango salmon was perhaps my favorite dish - so unbelievably delicious - and decently sized, the nigiri was good but nothing phenomenal, and the ice cream desert is simple but so satisfying. Their drinks are really delicious and unique. Service was good too! I was a bit surprised at how split the menu was as we were expecting more fusion dishes. Having said that, this is a great spot for Japanese and Peruvian food.
I loved this Nikkei ( Japanese - Peruvian) restaurant. The atmosphere and foods flavors were amazing. The portions were a little smaller than expected but not a big deal ( sorry, I just wanted a bigger ceviche!).the hot towel trick was great! No-tipping policy was something Ive never seen in the US before ( as they compensate their staff with fair wages), I think it was good too! Overall, a great experience and would definitely would like to go back there when in NYC!
Loved the whole experience, great and friendly service and amazing food for sure. The only thing is that it was my 25th birthday today & I started that on the reservation so honestly i thought Id get a candle with a scoop of ice cream or something but they just gave me a nice card. It was a really nice gesture but honestly I wish it was the candle. Really nice bathrooms by the way and clean!
This restaurant is conveniently located in Midtown. It is Japanese fusion with Peruvian influences. The sashimi and sushi selections here are amazing. The seafood is very fresh. The Maki rolls of combination bowls are not traditional Japanese and have more of a Peruvian twist to it, so flavor profiles are not what I’m used to but they were interesting. The staff is very friendly and the ambience is fun and welcoming.
Japanese-Peruvian fusion. It worths a try. Chirashi was cute but omakase was just mediocre. Rain drop dessert was pretty but just was a bland jello and did not taste good. Maybe it is a good place for drink but not really for food. A little overpriced. I don’t think I will go again.
Friggin dug the drinks. To be perfectly honest, i might not really go back for the food. The food, to be perfectly frank is on the cheaper side on regards to quality but not cost. That is not a slam, but we paid $7 for a mushroom and potato empanada. ALL respect to the establishment but this should be $4 at best. Howeber, the other corn staryer was good and overall, I enjoyed the small starters paired with....(drumroll...) the incredible $9 Happy Hour cocktails. I had a couple and loved every sip of it. Amazing.
A lovely Japanese - Peruvian restaurant with (1) hand towels that appear magically when warm water is poured on to them, (2) a very good menu, (3) beautiful seating area, (4) helpful staff and (5) lively music. Try Japanese - Peruvian fusion for a change, I think you would like it. We had shrimp gyoza, salmon with vegetables, egg sashimi, California rolls and motchi with ice cream.
Perfect blend of Peruvian and Japanese flavors. Appetizers are excellent for table sharing. Kushiyaki (meat on skewers) and Robata vegetables are delicious and fun to share. For main dish we had grilled whole market fish which is tender and very flavorful and amazing Omakase Nigiri. Staff are very professional and knowledgeable. No Tipping needed.
Fusion Japanese and Peruvian food. Sushi and caviar were fresh and they were able to easily accommodate a dairy free eating experience. The house tofu was served with eye droppers full of dashi extract and eating it was a novel experience. The only downside is the quality to price ratio is slightly skewed but they are non-tipping meaning that fair wages are paid which balances as well.
The food was good. However it took over an hour to come out. The waitress was really nice but two men in suits who seemed to be managers/owners were extremely rude. They jeered at a girl who didn’t say “thank you” as she was exiting the store, meanwhile she thanked her waitress and had no business thanking two random men in suits.
Everything was fantastic. Exceptional service, and ALL of the food was good. A little sweet coconut cream added to the poached pear dessert would make it even better. ;) But no complaints at all, and also very clean bathrooms.Bella was a fantastic waitress, and we hope she’ll be available to be our waitress next time we come back to NYC!
I came here for a nice lunch and drinks with clients earlier this week and had the best time. They have beautifully plated lunch sushi sets, complete with salad, soup, and a really good tofu in a small glass container. Everything was fresh and delicious, and the service was fantastic. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that its a non-tipping establishment, you dont see that too often in NYC, very classy.
I feel really disappointed with this restaurant, first of all because I am from Perú and I love Nikkei food, I really wanted to love this place and recommend it to all my US friends but unfortunately I cannot say the food is authentic... I can see the effort of trying and the service is very good but the food I had is definitely not as good as in Peru. If you are here you should try the tiradito instead of ceviche, maybe next time I should try the makis in orther to change my mind.
Sen Sakana means a thousand fish, referring to the many species found in the Peruvian seas and the origins of the cuisine.I had the root vegetable chips, salmon ceviche, the seafood yaki soba and the Nikkei nigiri omakase. I would recommend all of the above.Great decor, great food and great service.
Is there anything below 1 star?We were a group of 10. We all went over to a different Restaurant 2 blocks down to finish the meal.Never had such a bad experience in my 35 years!Food was not great at all.The wait for the table. The wait for the drinks!!!The wait for the bread.. Oh it actually never arrived!!The wait for the appetizers took 30-45 Minutes- with nothing on the table. The mains came only the short ribs was 8/10The rest was 2/10 and waiters forgot 2 of our mains and by that time the kitchen was closed already. We waited for a desert more then 10 minutes and we decided to go over 2 blocks down for mains and desert!Never again & I wont recommend!
Cool new high-end kosher restaurant in midtown. Meat and sushi. The sushis were okay but not great. Meat was tender and well cooked. Service is good. No water selection, like they have their filtered water but no other option (thats weird, knowing that water is a high profit product). Also they lack a vegan meal. I suggested the owner to have a vegan selection on the house burger. He thought it was a good idea. Ill revisit again soon. Price around $100/150 per person.
I picked up this place for anniversary dinner with my husband and food was amazing, place was quiet and enjoyable. Food was amazing. We ate a lot! My favorites were “ceviche carretillero”, octopus & shrimp grilled & sudado de mariscos; Very tasty dishes. Also they have a very good pisco sour and I also spent time on the bar trying the classic cocktails, my favorite cocktail was NY whiskey Sour, the happy hour on weekends is amazing.
The facility and service were good and thats all they have. The food was really bad, so consider the quality they served, its way overpriced. I had the fried pork loin, thick, dry and chewy, nothing like tonkatsu. My friend had the sirloin, also extremely chewy. The appetizers were a bit better than main. Dont know why they have such good reviews?
My best restaurant experience in all of NY. From start to finish everything was amazing. We got the Beef Skewers, Eggplant thingie, Beef dumplings, Crazy Sen Sekana Sushi Roll, and the Roasted Quinoa Chicken. Every item was drool worthy. The service was immaculate. All servers and staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Michael the manager pours his heart into this place, and it shows. The vibes were spectacular. Great ambiance, the music was loud enough to drown out the noise from other tables, yet quiet enough that I could easily hear and enjoy the company I was with.Overall, 10/10 experience. I loved Sen Sakana!
The chicken soup is highly recommended. Sleek entry, club like setting inside. plenty of seats on the night i went, a little over staffed (I watched two server hanging out at the station open to the customer most of the night chatting with each other, a bit weird). The sushi roll is okay and hot entree is a little lost on layer flavoring - it just ended up into a mesh of different taste. The grilled veggies were good. I will come back just for the soup though.
It says on the outside Japanese restaurant but it really is a one-of-a-kind place. It is Japanese Peruvian Fusion. Everything I had was fantastic including the One of a Kind drink I had. I dont normally like quinoa but the quinoa and arugala salad was out of this world fantastic. See photo.
Its a beautiful and well designed restaurant decor and very nice staff, but unfortunately the sushi is 26 dollars for literally fake crab thats terrible , and 18 dollars for an overly sugary cocktail . This is one of the few places I have no idea how it has a 4.5 on 500 reviews , its. 2.0 for a high price
Had high hopes. Very nice ambience. Had a drink at the bar. No snack (peanuts) offered. Sat at the table. No bread offered. Had the steak for 2. Bland. No seasoning. $155 and couldnt be more then 10 ounces. Steak was served with one side dish. We finished it and then the second side dish came out. Then the third persons main came out. Nice and friendly staff. Terrible service. Maybe its to new. Dont see myself going back. There are better options.
Sen Sakana was the perfect choice for our friend reunion this past week. We were so thrilled that Sen Sakana converted to Kosher! Classy with great vibes, the service was phenomenal, food delicious, and alcohol good quality. Would definitely recommend, and will be coming back!
My group and I had absolutely THE most amazing time here. The food was delicious, the ambiance was fun and swanky, the drinks were great (even the non-alcoholic ones). Everyone was extremely friendly and attentive to our needs - from the hostesses all the way up to the general managers. We were very much taken care of. What a great experience. Highly recommend!
My wife and I went there to celebrate an anniversary. Thanks to the Manager and our waitress for making it a memorable evening. We had amazing drinks, Sake flight, sushi and dessert. What a relaxing and enjoyable environment. If you are looking for Asian fusion or sushi in the theater district then this is your place. Also, most of the meals dont take long to prepare so they can get you in and out quickly if you need to make a show.
Wonderful spot! My fiance and I discover this place by mistake during our xmas shopping. I’m glad we found it! The food it’s delicious and the combination of Japan and Peru...simply exquisite. They have a very nice selection of drinks and cocktails. The service was also great, staff was very friendly. Everything was very clean and even though we didn’t have a reservation we were seated right away. This place has become one of our favorite spots and now that we know about it we definitely will be going more often. The blend from these two traditional cuisines is delightful. We highly recommend it.Oh and don’t leave without having dessert!
Had my birthday dinner with a group of 14 family& friends, and from start to finish, it was amazing. The wait staff were extremely poised and patient; the food was fantastic and the desert was divine. We had a wide selection- from vegetarian to sushi and every single person was happy. I definitely recommend.
Fun fusion food with a twistWe dinned here to try something new. After reading the reviews, we skipped the sushi (this place is not known for sushi) even though several diners appeared to enjoy their sushi. We ordered a selection of appetizers, veggies, skewers, entrees and a dessert. We were hungry.... The veggies were extremely good. Some of the best potatoes we have had. The skewers were good, not great. The entrees were only okay. This place is pretty reasonable, esp for New York City and the gratuity is in included. (nice touch)One should try new things.
First time here. This place was amazing. Great cocktails, delicious food and a very welcoming atmosphere.Definitely a nice place to bring friends and/or for a client lunch that more of a casual catch-up that formal business talk. Will be bringing others here, so they too can experience the awesomeness.Wont forget to mention the staff! They were on point; friendly, not in the way, and aware of our needs before we asked for things.
The ambiance is upscale. The Peruvian Japanese fusion is really interesting . Loved their chicken wings which was very different as well as the why they serve edamame is original from other restaurants. The choice of entrees are awesome. The prices are not bad for NYC but what makes it a great value is the no tipping policy whether at the bar or having dinner. As to the waiters they are informed, polite and helpful. Great crowd and the view of the kitchen makes it that much better.
This restaurant was within steps of our hotel. We were looking for a nice restaurant to have dinner for a birthday celebration. No reservations were required. We found a true gem in this restaurant. The service was great as were the food and cocktails. Tipping is not required, but with such great service, how could you not. I will definitely eat at this restaurant the next time I visit New York, as once is not enough.
Great place for an event! We held our wedding after party at the bar here a couple years ago and had such a good time that we just held our baby shower in their back room. Jaclyn, our point of contact, did a great job organizing, the staff was wonderful during the event, and the food and drinks were fantastic. We had a sushi chef for the first hour, which was really fun, and people loved it. You may wonder about a sushi restaurant for a baby shower, but it was great - the sushi chef made veggie sushi for me, and there were lots of excellent, pregnancy-safe, cooked food options. Highly recommend for events!
We had our wedding after party here and it was amazing! The front bar area is gorgeous, and the bartenders are awesome, churning out fantastic drinks for as long as our parry stayed. And the staff is really nice, too. The manager, Michael, was great leading up to the event and at the event itself. We had many more people than we estimated, and he and the bartenders handled it with aplomb. We have also eaten here and really enjoyed the food. Go to sensakana!
So lets just say I dont really leave reviews but omg! Food is amazing but doesnt even come close to the service.Tiffany was absolutely fantastic! Gave us amazing recommendations for appetizers and main course. She made us feel at home and I totally loved her! Ask for her and you wont be disappointed! Shes so great you will love her 😁
This was my first time getting anything from Sen Sakana. I ordered a 10-roll combo for a team lunch and was super impressed. The platter was absolutely beautiful, the delivery came exactly on time, and the sushi was by far the best Ive ordered in the area. The fish quality is clearly really good and the flavors were delicious. I will definitely be ordering again for lunch meetings and events!
I walked in and saw that this place was not professional they had 20 people waiting and arguing with hostess we could not even get to her so I went and sat on my Pel and the manager came over abd told us we need to leave the restaurant . Who does that ! The manager looked and spoke like he was a low class truck driver . When say I sunk into chair and almost fell off because it was broken and the table and chairs were dirty . Terrible experience
Just opened, but this place is already marvelous. The menu offers many choices - especially tasty small plates - and our server was great at helping us navigate it. The presentation was beautiful and the food outstanding! So many wonderful flavors and textures. We ordered a variety of dishes and shared. Service was included, which was nice. Will definitely go back.
Absolutely love this place!! I came here for my birthday and had such a great time with my family and friends! I was there with my 8 month old and they were very accommodating to us. The prices are high but keep in mind that this is a no tipping establishment. The subtle and sometimes not so subtle fusion between Peruvian and Japanese cuisine is a match made in heaven. I found my self very excited for the next dish that was coming our way. The amazing food was accompanied by great service which made the whole experience a 5 star experience. I will be back!
Went on a Friday afternoon for lunch with a friend - the food was knockout and the staff was extremely attentive. The owner of the restaurant and the executive chef even visited with us. In fact we were so impressed, we made reservations for the next night (Saturday evening) to return with a larger group. Again, food was outstanding (really opened my taste buds to fresh and new ingredient combinations and flavors) and the staff, yet again, was extremely accommodating and truly A+. And, we again had a further opportunity to interact with the owner/chef.I highly recommend this place not only for the food, but the experience as well. Enjoy!
Came here for dinner on a Saturday night - made the reservation for it just a few hours before on the same day, and were seated right away when we arrived. The place was packed and the overall atmosphere was quite trendy and lively. Would be a great place to come chill with friends, but probably not my first choice for a quiet intimate date night. The fusion Nikkei cuisine was creative and with the extensive menu offered it was hard to decide what to order. We ended up trying a good mix of apps and skewers and sushi, all of which were delicious, although the skewers were a little heavy handed on the salt. However, the nigiri sushi really stood out - the quality of the fish was fantastic and really surpassed our expectations. The cocktails that we ordered were also really great - I would recommend the egg cream mocktail in particular.
Love this place and the service is excellent! Attentive, without being intrusive. I dined here twice last week. On my first visit with friends, I was just mentioning to my friends (so I thought) that I wondered whether there was a gluten-free menu and suddenly upon someone else overhearing this the G-F menu appeared. everything I had on both visits was delectable. The waiters are very helpful in offering recommendations and ensuring that the diners have the best experience. Well keep this one on my list when Im in NY.
Stumbled across this place on the way to another japanese during a trip to NYC. It was cold and we liked the look of it so went in and what a great decision that was. Im not a big sushi fan but this was unbelievable!!The chicken wings and the Salmon Ceviche were some of the best food ive eaten. Great service too. Pricey but well worth the money and actually not as expensive as some other good restaurants in NYC
Delicious food and wonderful atmosphere! Great place to come with clients or after work for those who work in the midtown area (especially during their happy hour special!). On top of great food, there is an ever-changing cocktails menu full of unique cocktail options!
Im giving this place 5 stars for the excellent staff and decor and quality but to be honest the food wasnt for me. While I enjoyed Chinese Peruvian and other fusions in Peru I found this wasnt my cup of tea. If you are a fan of Japanese food though, youll likely love it.
First experience with Peruvian-Japanese cuisine. I’m a sushi purist but this place is exceptional. Staff is knowledgeable and pleasant, seating not too cramped (rare for NYC). Sexy Sen Sakana roll, hamachi with mango, mochi empanadas, chicken liver skewers, I can’t remember what else... we ate so much and all good!! Great Boulevardier cocktail. I want to eat here three times a week.
A go to restaurant if you like the Japanese food with a little bit of twist. Staff is very courteous and on toes to help you with your request. I wanted to tip our hostess and waiters but since its a Japenese rest. it is a non tipping rest. Cocktails are amazing as well. Worth trying everyone of them 😁
This place is great. The food was amazing and the service was top notch. The service staff was on point the entire duration from the time I walked in up until the time that I left. The food portions were just right and are great for sharing. This is a great place to take a good friend or family member that you want to impress. 5 star......😉😉
Ah, the food is sooo good! Quality, creativity, and taste perfectly fused. The staff provided a service that is incomparable— and the restaurant doesn’t even require tipping (either Peruvian or Japanese model). My family had such a great experience there we tipped anyway. Highly recommend!
Dropped into Sen Sakana with a friend for cocktails and sushi. Very happy that we did! The drinks were so creative and unique and the sushi was INCREDIBLE. Another high note, our server was extremely knowledgeable and definitely pointed us in the right direction with regard to our choices. Midtown gained a new winner!
Sen Sakana is more than a great restaurant, but an amazing dining experience! The fusion cuisine is unique and delicious. The staff is friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable about the menu. I love the root vegetable chips and the chicken nanban! I would recommend this restaurant to everyone and cant wait to go back!
Interesting food, good quality ingredients, small portions, very pricey even with tips included in price. $8 for one cucumber with a teaspoon of sesame oil ? Expensive. $40 chirashi ? Was good but ...Wine list starts at $60 , theres no draft beer and sake list has a few very expressive choices .It is hard to get used to included tips but after you factoring them in It is still overpriced. So food is good , service very good , nice interior but if not for Gilt voucher discount would be pretty disappointing.
This is a wonderful place with some great food. Sat at the sushi bar and had a nice conversation with the Sushi Chef Sang Hyun Lee. Let me tell you folks, he was very friendly and informative. His special roll was outstanding and he suggested some fish that I absolutely loved. I will definitely be returning and looking forward to his next creations.
We visited Sen Sakana on a Friday night before a visit to a Broadway show. We had a table in their large “middle section” which was perfect for us. The whole place reeked of classiness. The ambiance and volume were perfect where we were seated. Artem, our waiter, was super helpful and recommended a special for the day Ceviche dish appetizer that had Mussels and Scallops that was really awesome. We had the Charred Edamame which was prepared very differently than what you may be used to in a typical Asian restaurant but it was Sooo flavorful and delicious. Both my wife and I had various Sushi selections and all were delicious. I would be remiss in not mentioning the unique shape of the chopsticks (I know, right) which were somehow much easier to use than usual ones. The wait staff was very attentive and there seemed to be a very high staff to patron ratio and you could feel it. Overall, a really wonderful experience and we will [hopefully] quickly be back for more!!
Pad Thai is pretty difficult to mess up, however they managed to do that. Seemed to be refrozen version of a TV dinner that you get from frozen section in a Supermarket.Oh, and they charge you about twenty box for the roll with Crabstick that they call Real Crab in a menu!!!!
A unique eating experience at a restaurant with phenomenal food. Theres Peruvian sushi, but for those who arent fond of sushi or experimenting with food, they have kebabs and other items. The dishes are on the pricier side, particularly the sushi and some starters. Although for NYC it isnt that expensive and there are cheaper options. I was told I needed two rolls after having shared some appetizers, but that certainly wasnt necessary.
What a wonderful experience I had here last night! Everything from the decor, music, service and food was amazing!!! I could eat those shrimp gyoza for breakfast lunch and dinner!! Must have the ceviche as well!! Steak and sushi rolls were also delicious. Didnt have time for dessert so looks like I will have to go back soon. Great space in the back for group dinning.
One of my favorite dining experiences!! My boyfriend and I were looking for some delicious and out-of-the-ordinary Japanese food, and we couldnt have gotten it more right with a trip to Sen Sakana!! It was our first time dining there, although I knew they had quality sushi, having experienced the event catering in the past (via Carmen Bissell). We had a pre-fixe menu and had the joy of trying many different dishes. We enjoyed everything from the drinks to the dessert--highlights included the charred edamame, yucca/cheese croquettes, chicken nanban (breaded with quinoa), and lucuma ice cream. We will definitely be back to try more of the Nikkei part of the menu. I see they have a delightful-looking Valentines Day menu too!! Great date place with music and ambience to match the wonderful food.5 STARS!
First off our server Tiffany was really wonderful. She is why there is a 3 star rating. The food was mostly good, but some things were just plain bad. For example the Unagi was rubbery and the fish eggs did not taste fresh so they over powered otherwise good dishes. My biggest complaint is that my $40 main said to choose between 2 options Uni and something else. I chose the uni. No where on the menu did it say there is an up charge for either choice you make. So we were surprised when the $40 main became $51 on the bill. This should simply not be allowed, they should have to clearly state in the menu when this is the case. Or the server should have to notify you. Not to mention $11 for a few small bits of Uni is wayyy beyond Market pricing. Having your meal end on a sour note is never a good thing!
Celebrated my birthday dinner with my partner! Everything was amazing from the service to the food. They were very attentive to our needs and were always pleasant when talking to us. We started with appetizers and ordered an entree. The flavors were a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian which attracted us to the venue. When it came time for dessert they plated it with a happy birthday greeting and candle. For the first time in my life did I ever recieve a birthday card from a restaurant. I thought it was a very personal touch and made my night even more special. We will definetely be coming back. Thank you to Sen Sakana for a wonderful experience on my birthday!
I am not a fish or seafood person and find the options here to be more than enough and delicious. I am always happy with the cooked food (try the empanadas and salchipapas (Japanese Sausage and Potatoes)!), but both the vegan sushi as well as the Addictive Cucumber Salad are really some of my favorites. Service is also attentive and quick. Easy location. Will be back!
The serve their chriashi with a twist! I have to admit it was a delicious twist adding some fruit and some crunchy something to it. Its not what I wanted though so I feel a little bit cheated. But low points because the quality of the fish was pretty meh. I tried their teardrop dessert. The passion fruit sauce was delicious but the rest of it is fairly underwhelming. The sushi bar isnt really a sushi bar (I hate bars where its too high to see and the people behind the bar are too far to converse with you … its awkward. Rather just be seated facing a wall.)
Excellent service!!!!! Even tho this is a non-tipping restaurant (yes, you heard it right, non-tipping restaurant in nyc), you have a waiter that is very knowledgeable, attentive and with a sense of humor. The environment is nice a classy. Very comfortable seating. Now the food, they have excellent sushi!!! From sashimi to special rolls, everything was very fresh and delicious. We ordered the omakase and a few special rolls, they were all excellent. However, the hot food were terrible. We ordered the yakisoba and the steak. Both are terrible. The yakisoba has no flavor and the noodle itself it’s hard. The steak is like over cooked Chinese take out beef and pepper. The dessert were ok. They named it very special but it’s basic when it comes to the table. The only I would recommend if you really have to have dessert at the end is the mochi ice cream. Don’t get the chocolate tres leche, it’s basically ice cream on top of chocolate brownie.Bottom line: only back for the sushi.
Lucky me finding this restaurant. Crazy food combos (omakase sushi and chicken wings on the same menu) but boy is everything delicious! And the service is on point. We were in the neighborhood to see a show and am now looking forward to coming back to midtown just for the food. Who’dathunk?
I ate at Sen Sakana for the first time and I was blown away! From the way I was greeted at the door, to the beautiful decor and impeccable service I received from Carmen and the entire team! I even got to meet the owner who came over to introduce himself and see how my meal was. The food was to die for! The De La Sour to the vegetable chips and that dip!!! They have these amazing yucca queso croquettes and salmon cerviche which was the best I ever had! I could go on and on- the quinoa crusted chicken...honestly every bite was amazing. I already made another reservation to take one of my best clients out this week. I cant wait to go back! Also- there is a back room where we can put on speaking engagements/presentations that I am already speaking to my team about. You have to go here! Im hooked.
The avocado and quinoa salad is simply the best salad Ive ever had. Ten flavors masterfully mixed. Alex at the bar is a freaking artist at work. Ricardo is a great host. Mushroom empanada sucked but everything else Ive had the three times Ive been here is outstanding!!!
Had an amazing experience here! The sake sommelier helped us pick a couple great bottles for our dinner. We could not stop ordering food, the combinations are unbelievable. The YAMITSUKI “ADDICTIVE” CUCUMBER were surprisingly simple but amazing, and actually addicting.... We had several ceviches and 10 other plates I cant remember, all great. Dont miss this place.
Sen Sakana is a beautiful restaurant in a great location. The ambience is great and the lighting sets a great vibe. The staff is wonderful, friendly, and professional. The food is to die for. A few people in our group got the prix fixe - the options on it are incredible and is a great value. Here is some of the food we tried, highly recommend: pork belly miso soup, Japanese curry chicken empanadas, spicy tuna maki, salmon maki, negihama maki, nikkei ceviche, quinoa chaufa, and some type of chicken thigh bowl. Honestly, you can’t go wrong here. It’s delicious.
The restaurant decor is spot on and the atmosphere is perfect for a date night. However, the food fell short by a long shot. Bland, underwhelming, and just straight up confusing is the only way I can describe the menu and food. The Peruvian/Japanese fusion just did not work at all. If only the food was as good as the service and decor, this place would be a homerun.
Don’t order the Lomo Saltado. It was average at best except for the potatoes- they were so deep-fried they weren’t edible. Minus the potato, the rest was just ok. Our appitizer was some kind of teriyaki chicken wing and had too mich sauce, but the onions served with it saved it-they were excellent. Our drinks were good.
Contemporary decorations. Its not a Peru restaurant. Its Asian fusion restaurant. I dont recommend. The food is expensive, a few food. My plate came with big rock, yes big rock, three small langostino, two small pieces of tofu, and two almejas, and two clan. The most popular dessert is a regular ice cream with egor. The drinks are also expensive. A friend and the new recommend to me. I dont quear about the price. But I hope itll be good, the quantity okay, if you promotion the food belonged some country taste like country in this case Peru.
I had the most incredible dinner at Sen Sakana this weekend. I had VIP Clients in town that needed somewhere to go and they called me at the last minute. They wanted to take me out to dinner and I knew just where to go!The menu seems appears long and I was worried my clients would be frustrated, but the server Vivian really guided us through each section! The Nikkei Ceviche melts in your MOUTH! The Addictive Cucumber Salad is appropriately named! I almost ate the whole thing!Chicken Nan Ban and the Waygu Steak are to DIE FOR!!!Definitely made a lasting impression and Ill be back for Valentines Day!!!!
A mix of Japanese and Peruvian flavors, Sen Sakana hits that sweet spot of something excitingly new, in a day and age where thats very difficult. Super interesting and creative food, great atmosphere. The appetizers in particular are great, such as the Japanese curry empanada, raw tuna/yuzu-scallop in crispy shells, cheese wrapped in pork belly, etc. Also they have some really interesting and tasty spins on sushi rolls, and the green tea tres leches cake is great for dessert.
Having recently discovered narvelous Peruvian Japanese food in Lima, I was excited about dining here. Unfortunately well meaning, cheerful staff was almost laughably inept, which tainted the whole experience. Had the food been fabulous, the amateur service might not have been so annoying. But is was far from fabulous, ranging from inedible to only good.
Nothing like this in Manhattan!! Peruvian / Japanese kitchen putting out amazing platings loaded with flavor. The menu had offerings that we have never seen in the cityand we will be back again.Noticed they have a gorgeous private room and thinking about having our company holiday party here.
I understand it took years and about a zillion dollars to get this place open. So at the big opening party you waited 20 minutes for a drink and had to jostle for the trays of been-there-done-that cater-waiter hors doeuvre.Try a friends and family period, folks. This mess is a disaster. But dont worry ... people who think theyre cool will come! Once.
I had been waiting for Sensakana to open ever since I passed it on the street months ago on my way to work. Peruvian/Japanese? Okaaaay?A little digging shows its more than just an interesting fusion concept, but a representation of a long history of cultural exchange. Knowing that...I couldnt wait to go. I finally got that chance last night. The imagination and balance of each menu item I had was inspired. I had the nikkei style nigiri and maki, and did so without soy sauce and wasabi initially to preserve the chefs original concepts. Absolutely delicious, and even married beautifully with the soy and wasabi when I added it (Im a man of habit, haha!).The nikkei nigiri is a take on new style and its worth every penny. Its hard to describe, but the skill and thoughtfulness of the sushi chef comes through in ways that standard sushi just doesnt have. Dont be put off by the interesting combinations, youll be rewarded upon tasting. Delicacy, balance, thoughtfulness, and taste...I was thoroughly impressed. What Im trying to say is that their sushi chef is an artist. The chicken wings and Japanese curry empanada were similarly delicious, along with the causa onigiri served in a duo of flavors with what tasted like a smoked daikon palate cleanser (smoked daikon is a lovely touch, by the way).At first my qualm was the food was great but small and quite a touch expensive, but the taste and satisfaction that came from it solved that. Food can be a passing sensation or just something to fill you up. You can leave somewhere, belly aching with fullness but with no real remarkable sensual experience. Those times have their place. Ive surely ordered absurd amounts of comfort food before! You can also, though, engage in an exploration of thoughtful plates and leave not in excess nor in need. Just with a glorious sense of contented fulfillment. Thats Sensakana.
Over priced and over salted, that is how I would describe the food. Having traveled to Peru, I am always looking for Peruvian restaurants. Food in Peru is inexpensive and good anywhere you go. I also tried authentic Japanese food, in Japan. The food in Sen Sakana, just did not work for me, too salty and so expensive for what you get. A tiny empanada $8, grilled branzino with no sides $40. The waitress was totally clueless, and thought the eel was raw on the sushi roll, forgot to put in my sons order for fish, glad I did not have to tip her. My go to Peruvean Pio Pio is definitely better.

2022-05-19The ambience was really nice. Service was amazing too. The food I had ordered before everyone else failed to arrive & when I mentioned it to the server he was able to bring it out quickly. The food itself was presented well & absolutely delicious: between ourselves Im quite sure we tried most of the starters & mains & had nothing but praise for everything. However, I still felt it necessary to take off stars only due to the bathrooms. They were AWFUL. I dont think Ive ever felt the need to comment on the state of the bathrooms of any restaurant Ive been to before, thats how terrible it was. It didnt seem like it had been cleaned in forever. The floors were filthy & sticky, & the seats were definitely lava. I mentioned it to our server & another staff member about halfway through the meal. Nothing was done about it. I dont care if the entire cleaning crew called out sick, they still shouldve found someone to clean it...

2021-12-07Had a very interesting dinner with good sake. Ambience was good, a bit loud but not overwhelming. Service was good too, I had to keep reminding our waiter to pour more of the sake bottle we bought since they kept in a bucket for us (keep it nice and cold) but it wasnt a big deal since it wasnt dry for long. Overall was an enjoyable experience.

2022-04-07Excellent foods! Miso soup was a surprise on the menu at $10 but actually includes pickles and a side salad - so actually a good deal. Ceviche and beef tar tar were both excellent. Tasty little gem!

2022-07-25We had a group of 7 people and Sen Sakana took care of us! The food was delicious from the different sushi dishes to the burgers and even the quinoa fried egg. Dont miss the beef skewers they were terrific as well as the 2 deserts we got, both the soufflé and the churros got rave reviews. Shout out to the staff the service was top notch, just keep in mind its a pretty noisy place so dont know if Grandma would enjoy.

2021-10-29Fantastic experience all around. The food is excellent, fresh and flavorful. You can really tell they are using high quality ingredients. (the Otoro is out of this world) The server was friendly and knowledgeable without being over involved. He recommended a fantastic Soke that really enhanced our experience. Its not inexpensive, but you get what you pay for. Definitely recommend this place, and look forward to our next visit.

2022-01-17Went for a teenagers birthday. She really moved it. Really enjoyed our food. Portions are on smaller side but quality cannot be beat. Sushi was spectacular.Special thanks to our server Trio who graciously went out of his way to come outside and take a family photo for us in front of restaurant.
