A Wonderful Bookstore! I attended an event for Dr. Glory Van Scott and her book GLORY: A Life Among Legends. Jazz Impresario George Wein and Reknown Author Erica Jong Introduced Dr. Glory. Francoise, Director of Community Affairs for Shakespeare Books was accomodating and gracious.
Fantastic place that you probably wont want to leave. :-) Great selection - of books, gifts, and cards - a cafe and absolutely EXCELLENT STAFF! Fabulous service made it genuinely enjoyable to run an errand. A real treat in the UES - book buying (and printing!) made brilliant.
The staff made me feel as a customer I was being pushed around, and a bother. When I asked about hours the bookstore opened, the certain staff member didn’t know. But then the next customer asked the same question, they suddenly knew the hours? Either there’s a lack of communication, or they just didn’t want to deal with me. Regardless, it was disappointing.
I love books, I mean, the ACTUAL books, not those e-books and such. So, going to a bookstore alone was going to be a fun thing for me.The most impressive thing about this book store is that they have their own printing machine. The staff explained how it works. It was so cool to be able to see the printing process in action, as the machine is made with clear covers that you can see the inside mechanism. I really like their concept of being a bookstore and a print shop. Not only you can print any books, but be able to print your own masterpiece of any kind, that is really cool.I also enjoyed their drinks, I had iced Vanilla Latte and iced Mocha Latte, which was really good. The Vanilla one was really sweet, if you like sweet drink, it is awesome. The Mocha had the nice, dark chocolate flavor, which made it more on the bitter side. If you like not-so-sweet drink, try this one. Small little bites were nice too. They also have sandwiches and other snacks and drinks there. The manager and staffs there is really nice and helpful. That is always a plus.
Actually went in this bookstore to use their bathroom which is a very nice bathroom.Id like to have one point by a pastry from them but theyre very high-priced.The bookstore has a very wide selection of different books a lot of which are about current topics. I think a lot of people from the other side hang out there and have coffee and read their own books its a very nice and comfortable place to stay and drink coffee or tea!
I love wandering through this small, vibrant bookstore. The book selection is impressive given the size, and I especially like the greeting cards. Frequent events with authors and their own book club. Printing services, including consultations, available as well. The cafe has the best staff, so I always feel welcome. The coffee is delicious, and the vegan chocolate chip cookies actually melt in your mouth. Prices are consistent with other area coffee shops: coffee for 2.25, tea for 2.50, sandwiches ~9, legendary cookies 2.50.
This bookstore is very close to Hunter College and although it gets packed quite a bit, they do there best to make things go quicker. They remain friendly and get their job done! The coffee is great and they are very quick when giving you the coffee. I will miss it once i graduate!
The baristas are really nice. I walked into the story on a rainy afternoon, looking to bide time before a work commitment. The atmosphere is really cozy, there are a couple of tables and chairs to sit in either for reading/studying. The coffee bar has hot and cold drinks, in addition to light food (There were probably some pastries in the mix). While I did not look through the entire bookstore, there was a selection of recent book releases nicely set up at the front of the store. It didnt look like there was a lot of free seating, but then again it was a rainy day, and I was there in the middle of the afternoon.
Since the remodeling was complete, Shakespeare & Co is a gorgeous boutique bookstore with a full service cafe (with food, coffee, pastries) and a small but cozy table area. Its the perfect place to meet a friend for a coffee, to pass an hour waiting, or even to grab lunch or a sweet snack (they carry huge vibrant Dough donuts). The book selection is actually very good. They dont have every book youre looking for but theyve got a little of everything. Youll be buying them full price but its certainly preferable to Barnes & Noble, and the bookstore experience may be worth the extra few dollars youre spending over Amazon.
I was standing for for the cafe and two workers literally saw me and made eye contact and never bother to ask why I’m standing around for 15mins, when a group of white people walked in they spoke immediately mentioning that the cafe is closed. Like thanks for letting me know.
Its a tiny book store. Free WiFi.. but for the students at Hunter college to purchase necessary books for classes. I go with my son to pay for some of his books but I dont like having to walk up and down stairs. Not sure how the handicapped students get down, unless theres a hidden elevator.
Shakespeare & Co offered us a pleasant escape from the cold. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. A book signing was going on downstairs as we whiled away some time with a cup of tea.Its nice place to step inside to sit down, or browse some books.Side note: although I didnt use it, there was a book printing machine there where you could have thousands of titles printed on demand.
What has happened to this place? I came in all the time when they first added the cafe and everything from the food to the customer service was fantastic. I cam in this week and this place has changed for the worse. Furthermore, the book side seems a little odd. They have a poor selection, and when you ask for a book that they do not carry they check to see if they can print one in the store for you. While this may sound great, in reality it is terrible. First, the machine that they use looks as if it is straight from the 90s, second, it took them several attempts to get it right. In the process they wasted hundreds of pages of paper and about an hour of my time. I am not sure what has changed in the last two years but the owners/management need to pull their heads out and it needs to be changed back to what was working. Additionally, time to retire that glorified copy machine and move on.
Very cute bookstore across the street from hunter college. There is a small coffee shop inside that does discount for hunter students. It’s a quiet place, great for studying. I’ve been walking to the nearest Starbucks until I realized that this place has coffee! So far the staff is friendly.
Its not worth it to shop here. They didnt have any of the books that I needed for class, and some of the people working there were rude to me. When I first looked for my textbooks, they were fine, but when I went their later to buy a leisure book with my friends, they were extremely rude. It was near closing, and I was about to buy a book, but then a lady was like, Maam, were closed. It was weird to me, because Im a guy. I explained that my friends were in the basement getting their textbooks and I wanted to wait for them, but then she said that they werent, and she walked towards me menacingly, pushing me out of the shop and into the street. I waited for them outside the bookstore, and they rejoined me a few minutes later. They also said that the lady was rude to them, and they only had one textbook out of the five that they needed.
The people are literally so unhelpful here. They never have the books I need. They only had like 2/10 books I needed from my syllabus even though the professor told us theyd all be there, and then they never gave my syllabus back to me, and then the next day they told me they threw it away and that it was my problem to deal with even though I need it to see what other books I now have to order on my own are, and I have no way of accessing it because my class isnt even on Blackboard. I am never coming back here. I hate this store and everything is insanely overpriced anyway.
If your a student the Text book department closes around 5pm to 6pm not around the stores hours. I tried to make a complaint the guy ignored me. Refused to even listen and let me speak, Im trying to explain my frustration. then tells me have a nice day. This place does not care about you if you are a student.
What a terrible and overpriced store. If you need books for school buy them online or literally anywhere else unless you dont care about blowing your money away. Furthermore the service is terrible, they require you to have a debit or credit card regardless of you paying with cash. I had the unfortunate experience of having to order a course pack for my English class there and only two days after ordering did I find out that you have to pay first before they actually put your order in, something which the cashier did not tell me and let me walk out after telling me the order was put in place. This place sucks, dont waste your money there.
Small bookstore, easy to get turned around and confused in. Went in to pick up a book on a Friday as a birthday gift. It wasnt ready. Ok, even though there was one on the shelf behind the register but hey it was for someone else. They told me wait till I get my confirmation to come back Monday to pick up mine. Ok. Monday afternoon, still no confirmation! I call the bookstore only to have the guy on the phone say Oh, yeah we dont got it, we gotta give you a refund.
AVOID THIS STORE AT ALL COSTSI waited for hours to pick up overpriced copies of poor quality books and textbooks that I could have easily purchased much much cheaper elsewhere. On top of that I cant even return for the $100 text book that it turns out I dont need, supposedly they dont do returns. This store blatantly rips off college students who are told to get their books here. There is none of the expected service of a retail store, and the prices are astronomical. All locations of Shakespeare and co should be avoided, theyre all the same.I wont be going into this store again unless they have a going out of business sale.
Terrible customer service the baristas was so rude and disrespectful she didn’t let me use my laptop for 5 minutes bc she said that they don’t allow laptops in there , like huh ???? And than l was holding my laptop on my lap for two minutes and she came around to my table with nasty attitude telling me again “sir we don’t allow laptops in here” their coffee 2/10 super bitter and weird taste
I had been waiting for our 26th anniversary since I looked online at Shakespeare & Co.s menu when my sweetie had a business dinner there. I had decided then that I wanted to try the mixed grill or the fishermans catch because we love variety. (Sweetie had gotten the fishermans catch at the business dinner and said it was excellent.) But, alas, our anniversary falls in the middle of the Christmas party season and when it came down to it, I was in the mood for more casual fare. Fortunately Shakespeare and Co. still had me covered! We were greeted warmly by Sara(h?) upon our arrival, and were told we could choose our table. We selected comfy wing backs at a table with a super cool gear mechanism underneath for raising or lowering the table. That was fun!Our meal started with some saj which is described on the menu as mediterranean flat bread. We selected the Zaatar Labneh, really as a stab in the dark. We expected something like pizza crust with herbs and a yogurt sauce, but what we got was like an extra crispy, rich quesadilla. Ha! No matter - it was very tasty and interesting - and happily the bread basket and herb butter provided the flavors I was expecting from the flat bread. Those rolls were a dense, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside multi-grain with enough flavor to eat without butter (Im usually not that into butter on my bread - I know - Im weird) - but that butter! Brittney - our attentive server - referred to it as garlic butter, but there is a lot more going on in there than garlic! It was completely yum and refreshing!Next up, we split the Mediterranean salad. We had asked Brittney what halloumi is, and she informed us that it is a mild goat cheese. She assured us about the mild part, which was important to me since some goat cheese tastes like goats smell imo. Im not sure which was my favorite part of the salad - the grilled halloumi, or the fresh mint leaves. Either way, Im looking forward to ordering this flavorful concoction again - hopefully soon! The cheese actually reminded me of a combination of saganaki (Greek flamed cheese) and fresh Wisconsin cheese curds (we moved here from Wisconsin in July - and Ive been missing those tasty, squeaky tidbits!).

2021-09-04They have a good collection of books and gifts, including some lesser-known and/or sparsely-available graphic novels (which I loved poring over!). Pleasant staff. Lovely, unobtrusive ambient music (smooth jazz). The textbook section was closed when I visited, but Id love to explore the downstairs section next time.Worth a visit if youre in the area.

2022-02-25A pretty spot with some good company. Great music choice and good drinks.Did not appreciate staff very much- and was confronted about my original review without offering helpful suggestions. Berated for writing review and staying long even when we made serval purchases during our time. I understand it is policy but they are particularly relentless about vaccinations and mask mandates. Be prepared views are thrust in your face upon entering.

2022-03-01This review is for a while back (2021). After that experience, I never came back. I came in the cafe and ordered a salad and coffee plus pastry. Sat down and my book was in my iPad. Device wasn’t allowed on the table. There was very distracting staff who was policing all of us with our gadgets that I couldn’t eat in peace because she was calling out basically every person sitting for our gadgets.I felt bad for one customer who ordered coffee (this was summertime), and sat on one of the empty chairs in the dining area only to be called out by the same staff who’s probably a supervisor saying “That (referring to the drink) does not qualify you to be in the dining area.” Lady left. I just knew I won’t come back. They have good salads. Coffee is typical.

2022-07-02Its a great store but I was asking for Latín American and Spain writers and they didnt have any of them, And I mean One of them has a PhD, And a lot of them are really the best, but yeap you could try to expand your horizons and do better with more writers not Just American...

2022-02-01I’m only giving this four stars because they didn’t have the book I was looking for. But the shop is a typical bookstore, staff was friendly and offered to order the book for me. If you’re looking for a best seller or a newly released book this is your spot.

2022-03-27I spent $45 but they would not let my kids use the bathroom, which was obviously operational as I saw an associate use it. Another business still using COVID as an excuse to remove bathroom service for their costumers. This in March 2022 when we are finally seing the end of the COVID emergency and even indoor masks mandates have been lifted. I live in the area but will buy my coffee and my books elsewhere.

2020-01-08This is the sweetest, loveliest, most helpful bookstore ever. We spent a couple of hours here just browsing and enjoying before we made our selections. It is chock-full of delicious titles, nooks and crannies to sit in and a very very helpful staff. Plus they ooohed and ahhhed over my precious new granddaughter - which of course earned lots and lots of bonus points. Anyways if you are looking for a simply wonderful place to catch your next best read, definitely go to Shakespeare & Co. They are the best!

2022-04-19Food and ambiance is average for similar restaurants in the area. However, the service at the bar was great thanks to the friendly bartender who elevated the experience significantly
