Shalimar in other cities:
This place never disappoints!Ive tried several dishes, but the biryani chicken is truly excellent. Any of the vindaloo dishes, too!Appropriately spicy, they will happily and adeptly adjust the amount of heat in your meal. Want to sweat? No problem! The vegetable samosas are also very tasty, but they do tend to also be somewhat greasy. This is an acceptable downside to something so delicious. The provided sauces are also very nice. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Service is *fast* and everything was piping hot.I definitely recommend this place if youre looking for some stand-out food!
One of my favorite places! Typically I like to go for the buffet which is very reasonably priced. I like so many Indian dishes which is why I love the buffet so much. They put out a great variety of meat and vegetable dishes. ( I still chose to do the buffet when I was vegetarian and it was not limited in choices ) there is everything you need from naan, starters, entrees, and dessert. Staff is always very friendly. Also try the mango lassi!
Ordered take out from here, I recommend going in for the buffet to be more cost effective. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, cheese naan, garlic naan and onion chutney. Did not receive the chutney sadly. For the most part the part it was good but I did have to add some salt to it because the flavor is a bit bland. The cheese naan was slightly under cooked but the garlic naan was perfect. I’m very happy to have an Indian restaurant nearby. I do wish they offered butter chicken but I will be ordering more from here in the future.
Food is mediocre and customer service is terrible. The food was left on my doorstep and I was not notified by the driver. I called the restaurant and they really didnt seem to care. The food is kinda pricey for what you get and for it to sit outside my door to get cold did not make me very happy and again, the restaurant didnt care that the driver didnt notify me. I was pretty much hung up on. I wished there were more Indian restaurants in the area, if so, I would not order from them again.
Love Shalimar. They food is delicious and the price is right where it needs to be.The service is always good and this place is an easy overlook. Don’t be fooled though, this is a gem for Indian cuisine and the lunch buffet during the week is a STEAL.The food is always hot and fresh tasing, the service is great, and it’s true Indian cuisine. If you’re looking for a new favorite, this is that place.
I am obsessed with this place. You wouldn’t realize how much of a gem it is just by looking at it from the outside. We get the buffet often, but not often enough. The food is so good and never disappointing. I love that their dishes are not spicy and yet so full of flavor. I also really enjoy the music they play inside the restaurant . The staff have never been rude, maybe sometimes a little distant.Recently their buffet prices dropped a little, which I believe is due to competition moving in next door. If they didn’t drop the buffet prices, I would have actually left 4 stars. I still pay the price because it’s worth it, but I stopped going frequently because it was getting to be a bit much and added up fast.Take-out is a rare treat for us because the minimum cost for delivery and food prices are a bit higher. But the food it still worth it to us.
Excellent chicken over rice combo I got at Shalimar. The delivery guy said no tip necessary that to rate us & be sure to order again & try something new if you like your food this time. I will definitely be trying some other stuff out from Shalimar. Definitely gonna count right & be sure to tip next time as well.. 😆
Wow so delicious. Passing through we picked this restaurant for dinner. Everything was flavorful and well prepared. The staff was super friendly and suggested a few dishes. We enjoyed the Samosa Chat, and Lamb Kabobs. We asked for the food to be spicy and they added the right amount of heat. Wish we had a restaurant as good as this in our town. The owner chatted with us and was the highlight of the meal, with out discussion on cooking.
Their food is great, but if you order takeout be prepared to wait for a while before it arrives. I live less than a mile away and it took well over an hour. If this is your first time going, I recommend stopping by for their lunch buffet. All you can eat for about $7-8. Dont forget to save room for their rice pudding for dessert! (they have pistachios in the back to put on top, you just have to ask)
3.5 with an extra half point for consistency and service. Solid vindaloo and seems to be getting better. Theyve also learned to make the CTM with real spice when you order it hot. Great staff and wonderful food. Call it an upstate vindaloo, good and warms the heart but dosnt knock my socks off.
Ive only ever ordered Shalimar for delivery, so I cant comment on the location itself. I can comment on how good the food is and have never been disappointed. Great flavors and spice levels, very quick delivery times, food is hot, naan is good. Ive yet to find Indian takeout in Troy that even comes close.
This place makes me want to drive into a pool of tikka sauce and shower off with a bucket of korma. The best food whether you want quick take out / delivery or to sit in. The restaurant is so homey that you instantly feel comfortable and welcome. The staff is nice and the food is amazing. The buffet has a great selection!
Absolutely great food. The recipes seem to vary from night to night but theyre always good.Service is highly dependent on with whom you interact. The manager and one of the servers are extremely friendly and helpful but the some of the staff is apathetic. You do not get a clean plate between courses unless you specifically ask for it. The restaurant is cold enough in the winter that I cannot confidently say that the heat is turned on.
People told me that was better Indian food in the Capital District. So as a person who loves him so much and gone to them even the other shell Mars in the area. This one is very consistent the food is always the same the buffet is always full love it always come back I cant come to this without my wife thats how much she loves it she gets upset if she finds out that I went to this location great spot safe area good luck finding parking though
3rd time earing here. Every time I go Im never impressed by the food. I think this place only stays open because there is no competition. The restaurant is depressed in appearance. The food is greasy or watery flavors. I doubt the back is very clean, like the plates. Forget this spot. Theres a new Indian buffet spot just around the corner on 5th. Im going to try that spot instead next time.
Great little curry hut. It takes some convincing, but theyll satisfy your spice crave as well.Edit: Over the past 14 years Ive been in Troy I have gone from a Shalimar regular to a Shalimar occasional to a Shalimar never. It feels like as prices have gone up quantities and qualities have both gone down.
I have exclusively ordered delivery from Shalimar, but I must say that every time I am in the Troy area visiting friends, I try and order from here if Im in the mood for Indian cuisine (which is often). Their lamb vindaloo and biryani, chicken tikka masala and jalapeno naan are my go to items. Food is always brimming with flavor with a nice, medium spiciness. You can ask to have it on the mild side or the hotter side as well. Great service and food every time.
I called before I decided what I want to make sure the place is open, and that they deliver.A kind gentleman answered affirmatively on both counts. I explained I need to decide what Id like and Id call right back, he said no problem. After 5 minutes when I called, a different person told me NO DELIVERY.I asked how that can be when I just spoke with someone else, assuming his boss...He said I have no boss, I am his son.I still insisted that he delivers the food, and asked to speak to the father, the previous person who just told me they would do this, he said he had left. I asked if he just runs the business into the ground once his father is gone, he said yes sir. This sort of attitude does not deserve reward.I wouldnt sponsor this business again in the future, even if it was 5 star food, which having eaten it before, it actually is not. Maybe the good reviews are from when the fathers around, and I happened to eat there with the boy running the kitchen. Anyway.. Buyer beware.
This is not an Indian restaurant! None of what they serve taste like Indian and no Indians visit this place. I got biryani and samosa from the place and the biryani was just flavored rice and not biryani. Samosa was okay but there are places which serve better samosas nearby.
Fantastic Indian food — lamb korma was creamy and lucious. Pakora appetizers crisp with excellent flavor. Kashmiri naan was like a dessert— full of an almond/walnut/raisin paste! But best of all was the owner’s hospitality— he came to our table and insisted we try his rice pudding (kheer) on the House! Awesome... we will definitely be back.
The Chicken Tika Masala is very good and so is the Chicken Curry. The Naan is exceptional and even better when ordered with cheese. I have been to the daily buffet and it is quite good and the price is very reasonable, $6.95 I think. We always seem to be taking half of the meal home with us to eat later, so you know the portions are good. All in all Shalimar is a good restaurant especially for the price. I would definitely recommend Shalimar.
After reading all the other reviews for this resturant I expect to have some good Indian food. After going the for the lunch buffet I was completely let down. I dont even think you can call the Indian food actual Indian food. The food was so tasteless l, I couldnt even taste the normal Indian spices.
Located just a couple blocks west of RPI campus in downtown Troy. Good lunch buffet and good food all around. I like to go here to read my purchases from Aquonia Comics across the street and that the cooks will prepare your order to your desired spicyness. Theyll do mild to what happened to my sinuses? They deliver. Portions are perfect for sharing.
Usually I absolutely adore this place for the food. I was told tonight that I could not order for delivery in TROY because the restaurants delivery driver didnt know the area....the restaurant is located in TROY. Usually I wouldnt have a problem driving down to the restaurant to pick the food up but this excuse prompted further conversation. When I attempted to explain to the rude man talking on the other end of the phone that all the driver had to do was drive up a well known street and make one turn he refused to take my order continuing to assert that his driver was telling him he didnt know the area or how to get here. I went online to see if something was up and found that they were not taking orders at this time. So instead of just telling me that they werent taking orders he prefers to tell me that he and his troy driver are incompetent. Itll be awhile before I eat here again.

2021-09-19I enjoyed the food and the service. The prices were reasonable too. I would definitely consider going back for lunch or dinner. Parking can be difficult to find. You may need to park a block or so away.

2022-04-23Shalimar is one of those hidden gems people walk by everyday but never realized how good it actually is. Today was my first time, but it wont be my last, the food was delicious, filling and surprisingly affordable. Also, as if the food wasnt enough, the staff was very friendly and took the time to help us pick a dish that was vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free. I would highly recommend you stop by and give them a try.

2016-08-10Best buffet in the region, and some of my favorite Indian food. The Vegetable Korma is to die for!! Low priced buffet, but the full meals are more expensive. Delivery.... takes a while. Same for take out. Still well worth the wait. The buffet now runs every day, which is AWESOME. Not a buffet to miss. Very casual, quiet, sometimes hard to get drink refills though.

2021-10-13I have to give them 5 stars. They make amazing food. I ordered my meal thru grubhub, picked it up and took it home. They are fast and efficient.I got home and realized my baklava was missing so I went back to get it. And because of the error he gave me one more for having to come back .I appreciate the extra mile they went even though it was just missing baklava. Thanks Shalimar!-a much less hungry customer
