Shiro of Japan in other cities:
Has been our favorite restaurant since I was a little girl. Disappointed, prices seemed to go up drastically since covid. Food still is delicious, but meals are supposed to come with a white rice. We were now told if you order a fried rice (which costs completely extra) you loose your free white rice? We used to enjoy both. Little silly things like this that are so petty. Will be back but nearly not as often.
Been here few times over past four years. One of the better hibachi places that I know in Long Island. Very good food, well prepared not burned like in some other places that I went to that’s why I’m giving them five stars. The inside of the restaurant is nice, but nothing great.
Been coming here for years, either they changed owners or Covid hit them hard, but prices went up. They also made this new rule where if you order a fried rice, you lose the white rice that used to be included with every meal. So basically if you want fried rice and white rice, you have to pay extra for both of them now. Its a shame, but the food was still tasty
Its a very nice place. Its big and spacious. The severs are nice. The food is good the tricks and fun stuff are pretty much the same everywhere else. Its a regular hibachi place. The price, thats a whole different ball game. For two hibachi meals, one beer and some waters it was well over $100.00. Id think about going there again.
Came here today for my moms birthday for the first time. Very glad we did! Service was amazing, order was taken very quickly and food/drinks came out fast. Our server was attentive and overall great. Our chief, even better. While preparing/cooking our hibachi he was kind, funny and entertaining. This was also my moms first time having hibachi and you guys made it a memorable one. Thank you!!! We will return 5/5
Came here to celebrate sons birthday. Made reservations online and had to wait about 15 min upon arrival, which was not bad at all.Staff is very helpfull and attentive. The food came out fresh and the chef we had did a good job cooking the food. He was funny at times and made a few jokes. While cooking the food he did some tricks. Overall not a bad experience but what gets to me is this, we all ordered cokes and sprites. As the night went on, we got some more refills. I would say about 2 each. This place charges you per refill. I find that redicuals.
Excellent Hibachi/Sushi restaurant! I used to pass by here all the time and never thought twice about checking it out. Boy I was missing out. The food here is wayyy better than some well known Hibachi restaurants and the sushi is on point, fresh, delicious and presented well. The staff here were friendly and attentive and were very pleasant overall. Hibachi dishes are a bit pricy but not as expensive as other places but you are getting to notch quality food. I would definitely recommend making a reservation for a table to avoid a long wait. Overall, a fantastic place and a delight. Definitely will visit again in the future.
Its was fire. Staff are on point. Hibachi is great and the cook was very talkative and kept our attention; not annoying whatsoever. Its all live so you see the food status. The sake was nice and with different strengths of sake. Menu is super straight forward and the sides are plenty. The noodles taste so good from the hibachi. All in all great stuff
If a negative star was an option Shiro of Japan would have earned it. Have been a patron for years. Never again. Beef, poor quality and over cooked. Chicken, poor quality, and over cooked. Beef competed with the chicken for grizzle and tendons. Work for your money. Spend it elsewhere.
I LOVE THIS PLACE 😋 Great Fast & Friendly Service!!! I really like the fried shrimp & Scallop appetizers. The Sauces that come with the Shrimp are so good!!!The Mussels in my opinion were not a good choice 😕 everyone at my table agreed that they were extremely fishy & not in a good way. However, for dinner I had the Hibachi Triple Combination Chicken, Sirloin Steak but I asked for Filet Mignon instead of the Sirloin... why because its better & I had that cooked medium rare & Shrimp.... I got it with the Noodles, Vegetables & Fried Rice 🥰 It was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! Make sure they give you the 2 side dipping sauces with it because they are Amazing!!!!
Carlos made our evening so enjoyable. Miguel was very attentive and knowledgeable of menu items. We Have been going to Shiros for over 45 years with my family. It is because of people like Carlos and Miguel that we keep coming back. Thank you for making our night so special..
The food was so fresh and amazingly good. All of the stuff was so nice professional. Our chief was entertaining and handle our food with care. This was our first time dining at this restaurant and I must say it was one of the best restaurants I have been to by far.I highly recommend anyone who wants to enjoy good food ans really nice people to dine here.
So we came as a big group already and they were more then understanding. They sat us down at a griddle with one of the best Hibachi chefs ever. Hugo was amazing and actually cooked the most amount of rice the restaurant has ever cooked for one table. All delicious and affordable food. Love going and supporting good business.
We had my son’s rehearsal dinner at Shiro’s this past Thursday. I dealt with Sophia who was over the top helpful, cooperative and made wonderful suggestions to make our evening the very best it could be. (I also waitress so I know she put herself into our whole experience as did the wait staff). I am a secretary so I know how hard it is to reach out to someone and then continue calling a number of times before they call back. Not Sophia! From day one, she either called or emailed me immediately to answer my concerns. The chefs were so entertaining (the father of the bride nor the ring bearer had ever been to a hibachi place before). If I could, I would give her and Shiro’s a 10 STAR! Kuddos to Shiro’s for hiring Sophia!
I have been coming to Shiros for years. Almost 30 years. In the 1980’s and the 1990’s I worked on Stewart Avenue. We celebrated many birthdays here. Now that I’m retired, I come in for lunch with close friends and recently dined here with my husband for Valentine’s Day-which is also our Anniversary Day. The food is excellent. The Hibachi Chefs are talented. If you haven’t eaten here, plan your next special occasion. We love Shiros.
Consistently Good. Ive been coming here twice a year since the late 1980s. Theyve added a few new things to the menu this time - lamb and duck. They no longer give you the steamed napkins at the beginning of your meal. I miss that. Also, I had to ask for chopsticks this time. I removed one star for this. The food is always good. I had the salmon and shrimp combo with fried rice. It was perfect.Try the Plum Cosmo. I highly recommend it.
The service here is excellent. All the staff were very friendly. However, not the best vegetable tempura Ive had. The vegetables did not seem fresh and was a weird color. Also pretty small portion for the price. The server however got everything right and my boyfriend and I were a bit specific so I give them stars for that. He was fast as well.Comfortable ambience. Great for families. They have a small bar as well.
I had a good time here for hibachi despite being one of the first customers for dinner (so the place was very empty). The chef still tried to make things interactive even though my colleague and I were so tired from traveling that day. Props to him! Maybe this is a general complaint of hibachi in general but I felt the food was so mediocre. Everything is just seasoned with soy sauce...If youre into that, I can see how this would be a great culinary experience as the service was friendly/attentive. Otherwise, I went thinking the food would be great but maybe thats why I havent had hibachi for years.
Came from Queens, NY because they used to have a location near my house and we used to go at least once a week. The food is to die for and the service is always great. The best and freshest Japanese restaurant! I miss you guys so much in Queens but I’m glad you have this location. Food was excellent tonight, definitely recommend salmon teriyaki, garlic rice, popcorn shrimp & miso soup. ❤️😍
As usual a great Dinner experience and excellent time was had by all.Service was 5 plus stars, could not have asked for better or more professional staff! The Chef at the Hibachi table was excellent did a great job of entertaining the ladies while making an excellent meal. prepared all foods as requested, such as Meat asked for to be cooked medium were cooked medium. Sushi ordered for appetizers was very fresh, well presented and tasted excellent.I would have to give our overall time and food as excellent and will be going back soon to take some friends as well as a later time to take extended family!!!
Sushi bar is great, endless hot green tea & we had good hibachi, all to myself and my best friend. It was like a private show :) due to our allergies; we couldn’t eat with everyone else. But they took amazing care of us and were extremely considerate of our health concerns (dairy & egg allergies for example). We really appreciate them and recommend! We’ll definitely be back
Food was pretty good. Covid protocol horrible. No separation on tables if the family are separated, cheft permitting gest to handle the cooking utensils, no mask mandate when not eating. This place is a covid super spreader. We Dont need loud singing when there is covid. Save the singing after the pandemic. Again, food is good if you willing to dine in a super spreader restaurant.
Outstanding Japanese hibachi and sushi restaurant with a beautiful indoor garden. Establishments has been here many years and has been great for many years. Food quality was super fresh! Salad dressing is like no other! A must go if you havent yet indulged! Cant wait to go back
Although everybody was friendly, it was very disorganized trying to pick up a to-go order.I saw a my order was ready and sitting there on the table but I couldnt get ahold of anybody to be able to pay for it. This was my second time there in the last two weeks. The scallop dinner was good both times but the first time I got onion soup and miso. The Miso soup was very good but the onion soup was so salty I had to throw it away. So the second time I got it with two miso, this time they were so salty I had to throw both of them away. These are problems I could have rectified if I was eating in, I will not do take out again from this place but I may consider dining in next time. This place was just starting to do dine-in again since covid-19and the staff was wearing face masks and the guests were spaced apart at various tables. It looked like it would have been a fun night.
We just ordered $90 worth of food, and for the hibachi dinners . All we received was a bowl of chicken for both . We didn’t receive any rice! Just salad and soup! It’s my mothers birthday and she is really upset because we drove really far for this and paid a lot of money just to end up with half of what we ordered. Now we have no rice for our meal.
The sushi here is the best I eaten! Delicate, fresh, small pieces with the fresh ingredients. We also have pork (Tonsu), Shrimp Tempura and Beef tenderloin. All those dishes served hot, fresh and they tasted fantastic. If you like hibachi table you can do the dining that way, however there on the back of the restaurant is bar and few tables that you can talk with your guests and have fabulous meal, in a peaceful and comfortable manner.
We had sushi in the small back space of the restaurant. They are more authentic than any other place around here. Shari (sushi rice) is small so we can taste the fish more which we like it. The servers are friendly and helpful also. There is a large free parking lot in the back of the building.
Usually Good food and descent portions, comfortable atmosphere, dinner for two coupon is online. Love their salad dressing! Only bad thing is the flavor of their noodles which taste like they are heavily soaked in oil. Otherwise, you will probably enjoy your experience over there.
Yes...oh yes.The smiles that we had bringing a crowd of 12 late was disarming...Then the service and food ..Cant explain other than bring yourself and be yourself here. They make sure you are looked after and what fun.Kids adults workers millionaires all next to each other.Wow..and thankyou
Let me start by saying we go to shiros every year for new years dinner for the past 25 plus years. The food was good as usual the service was not it has be declining for the last couple of years. Now onto the portions i usually get the steak and shrimp the steak was very thin they cut the thinkness almost in half but the prices went up. Value for the money not really worth it. But to keep a tradition going what can you do but go there.
The food and service was mediocre at best. We waited for about 5 minutes before anyone greeted us and the hostess was somewhat unprofessional. The food was underwhelming and unseasoned. The hibachi noodles were awful and the mango martini tasted nothing like mango and purely like alcohol.
I have been there many times and have not had any issues. Most of the time the food is good. The sushi is great. However, I went this past Mothers Day and was shocked that they raised the prices by a minimum of 25% for the day. Also the show that the hibachi chef put on was nonexistent. He did nothing but cook the food. I will not go back here again because of the price gouging.
Hadnt been to this place in a long while, and ended up here when the Benihana nearby said I had to wait 1.5 hours for a dining table at 7 PM. Food here is fantastic and their menu is much more varied than Benihana. They have a delicious Chilean Sea Bass thats absolutely sublime, along with their Filet Mignon, Lobster Tails and Wagyu/Kobe Steaks. Miso Soup & their Garden Salad with Ginger Dressing is wonderfully savory. My dining companions and I had no complaints about the quality or taste of the food. My visit here has reminded how really good this place still is and will be my 1st go-to destination when I crave delicious Japanese. Our server was excellent and I really like the layout of the dining room. Its not as frenzied and noisy as the Benihana. Highly recommended!
I really like this place. Sometimes the chef isnt very animated and I get that, youve been doing the same thing for the 3 years Ive been going there... The food is very good. I like that its not salty as many other hibachi places around. The sushi is also really good. The service is always solid. It is a little expensive though.
This is a fun Hibachi style restaurant. The sushi is always fresh and delicious. The bartenders are the best - friendly and helpful. One of their signature drinks, the Genji is awesome if you like a rum and fruity juice type of drink. The staff always greets you with a great reception and get you seated quickly. Fridays and Saturdays are usually packed but worth the wait. Make sure to check out the menu for overlooked items like the Hibachi calamari and the sauteed asparagus.
One of my favorite places to eat with my family. Sushi is delicious the food is great (with variety for the pickiest eaters in the family) and the restaurant is clean and well kept. The staff is always attentive and very polite (helpful when in doubt about your menu choices). The chefs put on great presentation especially for kids.
My family has been going to Shiro of Japan for quite some time now. It is an absolute favorite for my youngest child and very enjoyable for each of us as well. The service is very entertaining and the food delicious and consistent. Theres never any resistance when the opportunity presents itself.
Extremely disappointed with this particular restaurant after years of going here receiving a traditional Japanese experience this was very disappointing especially since there was not one Japanese employee working there, the hibachi Grill was dirty and the portions were smaller as they were trying to feed more people with less. The food was not seasoned well the only plus was our chef had a personality
Just had a terrible experience there. Food was ok at best. Hibachi show ok at best. i would never write a review about that though. I found a black curly hair in my food. Ok it happens. Not one person apologized. They took the hair back and my food. No offer to make me new food. They removed a portion of the meal off the bill. I have had better service at McDonalds. The manager only said sorry after i told him to. I will never be back. A little customer service goes a long way. Unfortunately they have no customer service.
Unfortunately the food I was eating was very bland from the popcorn shrimp appetizers to the salmon grilled entree. Other people in my party experienced the same thing with their dishes along side me. The waiters were pretty fast in delivering our food to the table downstairs along with the drinks. The fried ice cream dessert everyone thought was good but not the best theyve ever had.
The quality of the ingedients and size of the portion have declined over the years. Last nights waiter came by 3x total ( once when seated, once because we werent ready to order and once for drinks.. Never asked if we wanted more) until i had my bill. Then he came back every 2 seconds are we ready yet? . chef Alex was excellent as always. The score is a reflection of the business side of the house cheapening the product. The ginger sauce is weak and cut with onion and lemon flavors. The salad dressing was sour compared to traditional. Not rancid but sour like they cut it with vinegar . . the carrot pieces were so large they couldnt cook thru in sync with the other parts of the vegetable medley. Very disappointing and likely my last visit.
I wanted to have hibachi and coming here was a mistake. This restaurant is not run traditional and the non- Japanese chefs are not trained in Japanese cooking. The food was over cooked and unseasoned. We were not offered drinks or water after the initial one. To top it off the place is filthy. There were bugs in the ladies room as big as small mice. I had to step on one to make sure it was dead. A disgusting disgraceful establishment. I cannot believe they are permitted to serve food. Gross!!
One of the better hibachi places and it has been around forever. The wait can be long - especially on weekends. Plan on waiting (and having a few of the powerhouse exotic cocktails!).Standard hibachi side-show - if youve seen it once, youve seen it all. Can be interesting if you get some cool people at your table. The food is usually very good and fresh. The trick to beating the long wait is to skip the hibachi thing and grab the regular table service seating - you can still order the hibachi stuff without the show and it arrives pretty quick.
Made a reservation a week in advance. They took my information, but they never entered it in the computer. Never gave a wait time estimate, my friends and I waited almost an hour after my reservation time to get seats. Ordered sushi and a drink that never showed up and asked about them twice.
Still dont know how my husband was able to find a reservation on Valentines Day.. our cool was FABIAN.. very nice sweet and funny. In fact he was the only one out of all of them making their table fun.. will deft go balck again and for sure ask for him to serve us!!!
Shiros is not as good as it used to be back in the day. The restaurant could definitely use a remodel. Everything looks too old and dingy. Even the hibachi cooking area looks dated. The food quality is not as good either. I would not recommend to others. There are too many other hibachi restaurants to settle for mediocre.
Shiro of Japan what a great place been coming here for nearly 40 years. The staff does an excellent job and the chefs are very entertaining and put on a good show with the way they handle their knife doing a few little tricks. The food is always cooked to perfection, so grab your wife or girlfriend or a date or just some friends you will enjoy the experience and the food. And FYI sometimes on special occasions you may need to make reservations for the wait at times can be well more than a hour call ahead.
Have been coming here for more years than I can remember and always had a good experience. Recently, however, place seems to have gone downhill. Portions are way smaller despite the fact that prices have gone up! Service is less than stellar, with the waitresses having a bad attitude. Hibachi is also hit it miss....depends on what chef you get to cook the food. Not consistent by any means. Planning on going back to Benihana.
Good for the hibachi experience and plenty of food, but the food was just ok. Plenty of tables but best to make reservations. After dinner my friend and i sat at the bar for a drink- a rum and coke in a small glass was $9 and her leichi (sp?) Martini was $13. I guess were just out of the bar scene way too long because I thought that was pricey.
Good food, good atmosphere, an all around good time.- My finance and I went to shiro on Valentines day. We used some reservation app to get a table with ease. Got there @ 6:30 and our table was ready to go, staff was super welcoming and friendly. I had to wait for a 7pm business call, so I asked the host if he would mind just giving us a few mins. No problem he said with a smile. So as I waited for my call, my lady and I got a drink at the bar. The bartender who at 1st seemed very snobby actually gave me two double shot drinks but only charged me for singles! After that we sat down with a Very diverse group of people all celebrating Valentines day. Menu choices were made, apps were served, and then our personal habachi chef Fabian arrived. He def. Made a show of it. Spinning and throwing his knives and cooking utensils, making volcanos and trains that smoked and flamed up with ease. Everyone at the table was given the opportunity to have rice thrown at them by chef and caught in their mouths. Out of eight people at the table only one caught it ! Everything was stupendous! the only downfall of the entire dinner service was at the end of the night when the check came. Because of the language barrier between the waitress and I my debit cardwas declined in front of the entire table.(Which she proceeded to yell at me from the other side of the table DECLINE DECLINE!) Which was very embarrassing and unnecessary, since all the waitress needed to do was push debit instead of credit. I grabbed another card payed without a problem, and despite being embarrassed in front of a room full of total strangers still tipped my normal 20%. For me this is a great restaurant and I will go again. The only thing I would do differently is bring a group of my own friends and family to share the table with. even though people can be courteous and jovial at the table between total strangers it just seems to me that this is more of a family and friend restaurant where youd want to bring your people instead of eating with strangers. But good none the less 😁
Went here for a nice dinner and drinks. We sit down and try to order beers.. turns out they lost their license and currently couldnt serve alcohol. Okay moving on, we ordered white rice, at the place by our house whether you get white or fried they put it on the stove top to heat it up. Ours came out cold in bowls. We were sitting with another family and when handing out the veggies they started on their side. By the time they got to us the guy didnt proportion correctly so we got half the serving and he didnt even offer to get more. By the time you got all your food the first things that came out were cold. Idk if it was just a new person or bad day but will not be coming back.
HibachiVery bad quality of meat, rice, seafood.Rice: white rice is like rock. They probably make it hard enough for the fried rice with lots of liquid mix to prevent sticking.Chicken: thin slice and harden after cook.Salmon: not fresh to begin with. Smell bad first bite. The chef played with his instruments at the beginning, and way to noisy and unpleasant.Onion soup is awful. The waitress is very unprofessional, open her hand and ask you to bring her used bowls.Overall experience: price is fine, but service is awful. Tables are oily and sticky, serving slowly. Foods are not acceptable.
Went for my sons birthday place was extremely crowded a lot of fast food containers and paper bags and the floor was dirty was sat in the back by the kitchen where our table was infested with fruit flies waitress was overworked and kept making mistakes was my go-to place now Ill never go there again too dirty you pay for services you did not receive
Always like this place, but went last week. They ran out of Sapporo cans - ok. So they offered us Sapporo tap. That worked just fine. They came back after about 5 mins and informed us they are out. It was 6:30pm - a restaurant should not run out of anything yet. Especially a staple beer of theirs. That added on top of the fish not looking fresh, we walked out. Hopefully they shape up a bit there.
Benihana?? Is commercial franchise & the quality of service & food match he commercial low cost, low quality.Shiro of Japan is top shelf. Quality of food is unmatched. Steak melts away in your mouth, the fish & sushi swim on to your plate for freshness. The habachi chefs are skilled, interactive & chefs. Knife handling & showmanship are a class above. For 30+ years I have come to Shiro of Japan. It is a great restaurant for entertaining out of town guests, date nights, family dinners & first choice for celebrating birthdays. Restaurant has plenty of parking & is located on a busy section of Old County Road across from numerous major shopping stores & minutes from Roosevelt Field shopping mall.Always my first & only choice of where to go for entertaining, delicious Habachi Style Japanese food. Happy to have enjoyed 30years of great unmatched service & food. Looking forward to an additional 30years!!!
Ate at Shiro while visiting Long Island. Friendly staff greeted us and made us feel comfortable. The preparation of the food was a show! The chef determined how much of a show it was. Flaming onion volcanos seemed like a standard for Shiro. I had chicken but liked my wifes steak better. I will eat here again if in the area.
Shiro of Japan is the best Hibachi place in NY.I go to the one in Westbury which is great. The Shrimp dishes and Fried Rice are amazing.I like the fact they give you the opinion of Bean Sprouts or noodles. Most Hibachi places dont have the Bean Sprouts like BenihanaI like the Bean Sprouts better then the noodles.

2022-04-19Shiro of Japan was my favorite restaurant growing up so I was very excited to see it is still there on my recent business trip to Long Island. It was everything I remember and I am so glad I drove out to Old Country Road for dinner. The chef was entertaining and the food was delicious. I had the chicken with noodles and there was plenty of leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

2022-03-17I Love sushi and order it often from multiple places. Ordering from Shiro today was a major disappointment! I Don’t mind shelling out a few extra bucks for a good, quality dish. In this case spending nearly $34 on one roll and one small Kani salad was a little bit crazy. And to top it off both were below average when it came to taste and quality. Definitely will not be returning to this restaurant. 👎👎

2022-03-20Weve been here a few times! Their Gamera, Godzilla, and Miro Roll were our favorites! Their best hibachi was the filet mignon! Weve also tried the seafood trio which was okay. Please go and try their plum wine which was super delicious!

2021-10-30Great place for a late lunch. Food was really good and the service amazing -very short wait for table and service. Really enjoyed the Shiro fish and chips - tuna and salmon on sweet potato chips. There were a couple of big parties but overall a nice relaxing lunch experience.

2022-05-29We went for my daughters 21st birthday. My husband and I have been going there for nearly three decades. The waiter was attentive and knowledgeable, the bartender was great as usual, however, the chef paid little or no attention to our table. We were a party of 6, thats going to be a large bill. Roberto, our chef, was more interested in the couple seated with us. He was completely distracted and constantly looking around at the other tables. He didnt split up the shrimp appetizers correctly, the filet mignon was fatty and he was downright lazy.***************************I have changed my rating...It is August, 3 months later, and I would like to update my review. My family and I went this evening and we had a great time! I posted pictures from that meal. Our waiter, Anuel, was amazing and our Chef, Leonel was fantastic! He was completely engaged with the entire table. He was fun and playful. The food was superb. Im glad we went back and gave it another chance. Going there for 30 years could not have been a total mistake.*************************May 2022Still a fun experience. The menu has expanded!More seafood options and the sushi has improved. They also have a salad menu and a broader appetizer section.Adding me pics...
