I am grateful to have met Julian before starting my career in aviation, he has explained to me what many have not been able to do. He is a mentor to me. And having him in Manhattan is a great plus, he is an excellent instructor. The flight simulator available is very useful to practice communications with ATC, different maneuvers and especially instruments saving you time and gives you the confidence you need when youre right in the cockpit.
I have been very impressed with the quality of instruction I have received at Simtech. The instructors are all airline trained CFII’s which makes a world of difference in terms of the depth of their knowledge and their ability to train effectively. I am currently utilizing Simtech to supplement my training in the airplane in pursuit of my instrument rating. My current approach has been to spend two hours in the simulator each week rehearsing the upcoming lesson in the plane. It has been an incredible learning experience as the plane is a terrible place to learn. The ability to pause the simulation in order to brief (or debrief mistakes) is invaluable. I would say I accomplish 2-3x more learning from my simulator training days vs. my time in the plane. HIGHLY recommend this approach to pursuing both private and instrument ratings.
Julian is a great instructor. I am a CFI that utilized him for my Cirrus G6 TXi transition and his standards are very high. His teaching methods are at airline level and, as a 777 pilot he is also quite proficient at teaching high altitude operations to 121/135 standards.
I bought a package for my husband to brush up a bit. It’s been over a year since he last flew. Overall it was a good experience but the price is definitely not worth it. They charge $100 an hour for the instructor. Mind you it’s just a simulator and that’s an additional fee. Most flight schools in the NY/NJ area charge $50-$60 an hour for the flight instructor. I would have saved a lot of money had I taken that route. I wish I would have done my research but it’s a little too late now. I would definitely look into a flight school and save money in your pocket.
I always have our daughters (14 and 16) experienced something new when the opportunity arises. This time we were in vacation in NYC, and I came across with Simtech Aviation. Booking was very easy, and accurate and the instructor, Julian was incredible. They had a great time using the simulator, so much that now they want to become pilots when they get older. Highly recommended!
Back in 2019 I decided to take my first step towards learning to fly. I wasn’t quite ready to get into a real airplane just yet. I knew there were concepts, procedures, and general aviation knowledge I could learn in a simulator, at my own pace, and for a fraction of the cost. After doing a little research I discovered Simtech aviation based out of NYC —I took an introductory 2 hour lesson with Julian. I must say I was skeptical about how realistic the sim would be but after my intro lesson I was reassured how much value I could get out of it.Within the first couple of hours I leaned basic flight theory (four forces of flight), flying attitudes, basic comms, and how to taxi to runway. I walked away with a great experience and I was eager to learn more.Don’t get me wrong, a sim is a sim, and eventually nothing will be like the real thing and while I’m not looking to simulate what flying feels like, instead, I’m interested in learning things that are pretty much the same and make no difference if I’m sitting in a real plane or a sim cockpit. Things like radio communication, understanding flight controls, creating flight plans, learning how to use the g1000, interacting with ground or air traffic control — real deal concepts I can learn safely without being flustered in the air. I rather spend time learning how to actually fly once I’m in a real plane, bringing all the general knowledge I’ve learned in the sim.Truthfully, I’m a believer this is the right way to learn how to fly. Perhaps technology has caught up and is now more accessible. What was once only available to really expensive rigs for commercial pilots is now available to the every day consumer, and even home gaming enthusiasts. It’s been a few months since my last sim lesson; covid is to blame for that. Now that businesses are opening and NYC has reached phase 4, I am eager to get back on schedule with training. If all the right measures are taken (sanitizing equipment between lessons, speakers instead of headsets, fixed mic away from face, plexiglass between teacher and student) I would feel comfortable with getting back in the sim. I would even be open to remote lessons since I have a basic sim at home to practice. In summary, I’m really happy I discovered SimTech. Everything from the experience, the staff, the technology, and the knowledge makes it a no brainer for me to continue my training.
Julian is the ACE flight instructor. He is patient, passionate, and professional. The three most important things everyone need to master in flight and in life. Personally, Julian has been my flight instructor for almost 5 years. In between I have had some instruction from others, (simply because of scheduling issues) I must say the difference is night and day. If you dont believe me, give me a try, and youll know Im right.
Training with Julian was very valuable. Much more efficient to practice IFR work in the sim rather than the airplane. Julian could pause the approaches to point out issues, recommend corrections, then I would go back to re-do just those phases that were giving me trouble. Unlike many instructors, Julian is an experienced, active airline pilot. I learned a lot from his real world experience!
Maintaining proficiency not just currency should be the goal of any instrument rated pilot. Julián and his team provide one of the most time efficient ways to do so for Manhattan residents. The use of multiple situations across the country and in different flight conditions combined with Pilot Edge that creates live ATC interaction, is highly effective. Add Julian’s enthusiasm and knowledge transmission from his day job as United Express pilot and you have training that can’t be beat for any private pilot. I really recommend this training for any pilot looking to materially improve safety margins in their day to day live flying.
Julian is very professional, learning from a career pilot is the only way in my opinion. I’ve used the Redbird full motion and touchscreen G1000 simulators in the past, but I’ve found they don’t have the same features as the real one does. Simtech’s G1000 simulator offers all the features the real one has, and allowed me to learn the platform at a fraction of the cost!I’m a pilot that can’t always find the time to fly, so when I’m going to fly IFR I’ll use the simulator to sharpen my skills before I go out in the real world. I highly suggest checking it out and going for a quick flight!
Went to the Madison Avenue location for a Meet Up unsure of what to expect and was very pleasantly surprised. I had an initial appointment to brush up on my instrument procedures with flight instructor Julian where he worked to familiarize me with the system.Julian was very patient even though I was terribly rusty at the time. I booked the system to train solo and Julian was there to answer any questions I had on the system. This space is great for when you just want a quite space to focus. When you live in the city getting to a flight school can be tough. KFRG and KHPN-it takes something to get out there. If you want something convenient to help keep your skills fresh try training at this facility and ask for Julian. It helps keeps the rust off and more! I highly recommend it.
Ive trained with JD Aero on a few occasions - not just to stay IFR current, but also to be challenged and maintain proficiency. As an active airline pilot, Julian brings a wealth of experience and teaches the type of thinking pilots do on the flight deck of a commercial jet. JD Aero/Julian is top notch instruction.
Great experience. Went for instrument currency, and got an excellent workout. Julian made it challenging and fun. Beyond the basics, he covered descent planning in the G1000, rules of thumb calculations, and gotchas with the G1000. Very professional and has a wealth of knowledge to share.
Julian and his team provide a time efficient way to pilot training right in Manhattan. Multiple locations, flight conditions, combined with Pilot Edge that is a “live” ATC is both highly effective and convenient. I highly recommend this training for any student pilot who wants to practice in manhattan without the hassles of getting out to an airport. I have learned a lot from Julian which I am incorporating into my flight studies.
Julian was My flight instructor. I can not emphasize enough his level of expertise, professionalism and class. If anyone is lucky enough to do business with Julian you’ll find it a pleasure. I trust Julian with my life. Come to think of it I have. Many times. Easily 5 Stars plus.
Excellent instrument training. Latest glass avionics with G1000 and multiengine options (swap out the throttles). Effective curriculums and experienced instructors - all active airline pilots. You get the basics plus real world application. Great, easy to get to location in NYC. Can’t say enough about this operation! Check them out no matter what your experience level.
Great service from Julian, awesome setup with interactive intelligent ATC that accurately mimics the pilot read back whilst flying the approach on the Garmin G1000, exact same setup as in the cockpit, great G1000 prep, refresher, training... proficiency check, etc...various aircraft setup available, I was most impressed.

2021-12-22Our 8 year old son has been obsessed with aviation for nearly 2 years now. It started with some exciting international travel in 2019 which lead to non-stop drawings of planes along with incessant book reading and online videos, many visits to Intrepid and also LI Air & Space and a rapidly building collection of various scale models. All of this eventually lead to explorations with app-based flight simulators which piqued his interest even further, but ultimately seemed a bit complicated to manage without some real instruction (YouTube tutorials were only somewhat helpful and us parents know nothing about flying!). For his 8th birthday, we were looking for a way to level-up his aviation interest and thought about a professional-grade flight simulator lesson, but honestly did not think we would find an instructor willing to work with such a young kid. We also figured it might be too complicated for his age, so we pursued it thinking at least it could be a fun birthday experience. We found Simtech online and booked a 1 hour lesson online with Julian who was in touch with me immediately regarding lesson details and maintained clear dialogue in the days leading up the lesson. When we arrived at Simtech, we were impressed with the high-tech, well-organized space ...and the lesson was even more impressive. Julian was incredibly kind and patient with our young child and provided excellent, inspiring instruction. We were blown-away that our son actually gained a reasonable chunk of technical knowledge in just 1 hour ...and he was immediately asking for another lesson! We booked another 1 hour lesson recently and our son amazingly recalled much of what was taught in the 1st lesson which (in my estimation) was largely due to Julians teaching style...and we are now ready to book a student lesson bundle. So, what started as a casual birthday gift is now a more serious skill-building pursuit thanks to the stellar instruction by Julian. I would highly recommend to anyone who thinks their young child might be interested in learning how to fly.

2022-01-26I came across aviator.nyc on the web while looking for training options ahead of a prolonged stay in New York. Commuting to a nearby airport was not feasible with the small amount of free time I had, so this was the perfect fit.My partner bought me a gift certificate for the initial session, and I knew immediately that I was in the right place.Julian has a solid background both as an instructor and as an airline pilot. This knowledge is conveyed during the sessions by working through real-world scenarios together with the ability to pause and discuss the situations we are presented with. For me, this training was a valuable way to log time toward an FAA instrument rating as well as a solid refresher with the skills and confidence I needed to pass a proficiency check for multi-engine and instrument ratings associated with an EASA license soon after. The flexibility of the sim allows for sessions to be fully-automated with the latest technology, or to use basic instrument radio navigation This breadth of experience was valuable to me in not being geared toward a certain aircraft or avionics package, with skills that are transferable across platforms.Additionally the review of instrument rules and procedures helped solidify the knowledge needed to pass the written exams for instrument rating and instrument ground instructor during my stay.I would highly recommend considering this as a training option.

2021-03-22I trained with Julian for both my private pilots license and instrument rating. Hes professional, knowledgeable and is overall enjoyable to work with. His office and simulator are state of the art and perfectly emulate what it feels like to be in a plane. The simulator is perfect for refreshing your skills, getting current with instrument procedures or practicing your radio skills. It is also great for when the weather doesnt cooperate and you still want to get a few hours in. I highly recommend SimTech Aviation to both beginners and experienced alike.

2021-12-18I was given a flight simulator gift certificate for Christmas 2019. Then you all know what happened in 2020 so I didn’t have a chance to use it, but how happy I was to know that it has been extended. So, finally in mid 2021 I had my instrument lesson and it’s been just amazing!Using the flight simulator is a great way to stay current with an instrument rating, plus I got to know so much useful information from the real airline pilot. Thanks Julian!

2019-12-17Simtech Aviation is a Certified Flight Simulator in midtown Manhattan. It’s the closes thing to a flight school in the NYC area. Simtech is designed for people who love aviation and want to learn how to fly. Their clients range from kids who are just shy of starting their flight training to professional pilots getting ready to go to the airlines. Here you learn to fly with a state-of-the-art Flight Simulator (AATD) taught by industry-leading, active airline pilots. My 12 year old son has been taking private flight lessons with them and they are EXCELLENT. After each lesson, the certified flight instructor makes an entry in my son’s pilot logbook. After only three months using the flight simulator my son took his first flight in a real plane and was completely comfortable and did well in the controls. SimTech Aviation also hold once a month group event for kids who love aviation. Is a great alternative if you son or daughter loves flying, but they are too young to fly.

2022-01-27Absolutely amazing setup, very timely email communications, I cant wait to go back! It is so special to have talented flight instructors right in Manhattan where its tough to find that great place to learn. I used a coupon received from a family event and knew I needed to get my hours in as soon as I could!

2021-10-07I restarted flying in the Bay Area after a 30 year hiatus. I initially got my (VFR) flight review after which I decided to also get instrument current (I had my instrument rating from my previous flying stint). My wife and I landed up going to NYC for 2 weeks during which I contacted Julian/SimTech. I landed up doing my initial instrument currency training with him in the sim which worked out great! I did seven 3-hour sessions over 8 days during which Julian worked with me on a variety of instrument related procedures on the G1000 equipped sim. Julian is an excellent instructor and he was very flexible on timings (including the weekends). At the end of my stint with him, I felt very comfortable jumping into a 182 with my regular instructor and after 6 flights, he signed off my Instrument Proficiency Check! The sim was awesome with the latest version of the G1000 (NXi). Julian keeps all the databases current which is very helpful too. Beyond that, once I got home, I was having some challenges with my X-Plane and Garmin PC Trainer setup and he was able to help me resolve the issues with both. In addition to being an excellent instructor, Julian is very technically savvy from a perspective of teaching me to use a variety of different tools (both in the G1000 and outside) in instrument flying which is a big change from when I last flew IFR 30 years ago! All in all, a fantastic experience and I would recommend Julian and SimTech very highly.

2021-12-06I was finishing up my instrument rating when I started attending sessions at Simtech Aviation. All my training had been done on steam gauges and I wanted to round out my education by tightening up my procedures and becoming familiar with a G1000 in a safe environment without shelling out the money that it would cost to figure it out in the air in an actual aircraft with an instructor. Julian was very thorough and knowledgeable. He filled in holes that I had in my training during our sessions to ensure I was checkride proficient. I’m confident in my training with him as he is an actual airline pilot with a legacy carrier, a place where I want to be. The panel of the sim is very realistic with actual buttons and knobs to utilize as opposed to home sims where you’re clicking with a mouse. I should also add that the sim is a FAA approved AATD and the hours can be logged in your logbook… a double win! As I transitioned back into an actual aircraft, flying with a G1000 for the first time, I was confident and could focus on my actual procedures with peace of mind. Simtech Aviation is highly recommended to strengthen your aviation skills and knowledge in a safe environment.

2020-09-08It was a great experience to go to Julian’s office and see the simulator. He was very excited to welcome my daughter and myself to take a lesson. He office was prepared to a safety environmental with a cool temperature, hand sanitizer and we all wore our mask at all times, with glass between then instructor and student, with a pointer, to show where the controls are. So the student and instructor will be separated. We found out about this program by a student at Simtech, who was talking about it. Our goal is to get my daughter more motivated to get her Private Pilots license in a near future. She was so happy taking this lesson because she love to explore and learn different activities to be challenged. Thank you Julian!

2021-04-11I came for an instrument currency session and thought it was going to be a routine experience but Julian took it to the next level. He provided insight into everything, big and small, and I walked out after three hours with another six months on my currency. More importantly, I left with a higher level of instrument proficiency that I didn’t imagine I would gain while using the sim.As an airline pilot, Julian comes with knowledge that I wouldn’t get on my own. I’ll be going back for more than just instrument currency. This is the place to go if you are an NYC-based GA pilot looking to stay proficient/current while not having to go out to the airport!
