I waited on a fairly long line and ended up with a hot coffee that wasnt actually that hot. So that was disappointing. My sister was with me and her drink wasnt hotter than mine but not hot hot either. It was a tasty cup though so Id still go back if Im in the area again.
I wish I had discovered this coffee shop sooner as Im in Bronxville every week for the past 1.5 yrs. I was greeted and helped by friendly staff who recommended I try my matcha latte with oat milk. It was delicious and now my go to drink when I return. Im gluten sensitive, so I was happy to see more gluten free variety than most coffee shops offer. There is plenty of seats to enjoy your drink or work, but like that day, itll understandably be taken. Its a great establishment. Thank you all for your excellent service.
I first got a mocha with almond milk. Very good, but could have been hotter. The next day I wanted to try something different, so I got the matcha with almond milk. I think the guy put too much matcha. I got sick from it. I did go back yesterday for another mocha with almond milk, which was very good, but, again, could have been hotter. Still, a well needed change from Starbucks. Ill come back. Not for matcha, though. PS the cranberry, pumpkin muffin was delish, but when asked where/who baked them, the barista had no clue.....1/11/22, okay I have edited this review and deducted 2 stars. I was trying to find an alternative from Starbucks, so I thought Id come here. You know, support a small business. Sorry to say that yesterday was my last visit: I ordered my regular: small mocha , almond milk, extra shot. the guy poured half whole milk when I mentioned I ordered almond milk. He then proceeded to pour almond milk on top of the whole milk. I asked him to make a new one. He charged me $5.75. I paid $4.00 one time, $5.12 another, now $5.75 for the same drink! Hmm?
I’ve come to Bronxville for years, and for whatever reason I haven’t visited Slave to the Grind until now. The coffee is absolutely delicious. They always have different flavors. The shop has a ton of character and the staff is great. Definitely my new favorite coffee shop. I’ll be coming here from now on.
A great local coffee shop. When I’m in the area I always make a stop. They have a great selection of flavored ice coffees, alternative milk and syrups. They provide great service . Parking on busy days can be a challenge and wait time or a line may not be a quick in and out trip.
None of the coffee shops in Bronxville are particularly good, and this place gets too much credit for simply not being Starbucks. The service is so incompetent and clueless it’s laughable, almost offensive. The espresso drinks are weak, burnt, and stale too. I’m going to have to assume that no one is training the staff how to pull a shot or the basic principles of customer service. What I will give this place is that it’s comfier to hang out at if you don’t feel like going to a restaurant or bar, and it’s definitely a meeting place for locals. If you’re passing through town though, don’t bother.
Coffee was decent . Cheese Danish was very good. They rush to complete your order before asking you if you are finished giving the complete order. They should also ask if customers want their snacks heated as well. Lastly, they have music playing right where customers place order, which makes it tough for the cashier to hear the order.
This is a really great local coffee shop! It was very busy when we went, but every barista was still super nice, attentive, and fast. Even with everything going on, they were also still aware of keeping the covid capacity in check and politely telling people to queue outside when it got to be to many. Also the mocha I had was a damn fine cup of coffee! Loved it and definitely returning!
The coffee here is amazing and such a cute environment, but the customer service is obnoxious. I understand that they remember and attend to their regular customers but they should wait on line to receive their orders like the rest of us. Now that we have mask on, and Im not there everyday like their regular coffee drinkers, they get my order wrong. I think their customer service needs to improve by treating their customers the same or just have another line for their regulars. I tip every time Im there but if I see someone behind me getting their order before mine, I dont tip at all. Its called waiting. I hope they figure out some sort of system.
If youve never been here before, know that there is a $10 minimum for credit/debit cards which is pretty annoying. There wasnt too much seating space indoors and the flow of the shop made it awkward to order. Aside from their beverages, theres no prices on anything so you have to guess how much things are which is annoying. I ordered a vegan brownie (it was ehh) and an almond croissant (which was pretty good) and my friend had orange, cranberry scone which taste good but was dry. The coffee is nothing special but it did its job in giving me my caffeine fix.
The coffee here is usually great. But the last time I went , my latte was bitter tasting and awful. They exchanged it but the second one was the same. They need to clean the espresso machines. The rugs and floors also look dirty and overall the entire place needs a deep cleaning.
One star is too generous but it’s the only way I’ll be allowed to post. I was disappointed today when two out of three baristas were not covering their nose and mouth—one had no mask AT ALL and the second was wearing her mask below her mouth. When I voiced my concern, I was responded to in a dismissive manner. Taking my business elsewhere. So much for trying to support a favorite local business.
Awesome place. It is one of favorite Bronxville coffee shops. This is by far a more established than the other shops, from my current experiences (will update if incorrect). Good flow and service. They have a particular system. Not big franchise feel.Unique.It might become your spot.
One of the best places in Westchester. Have been coming here since I was a toddler. I remember playing games in the back with my babysitters, frequenting as a teen, and now occasionally working remotely here as an adult. Slave is a huge part of any local’s life and will continue to be. It is unfortunate they’re renovating, though. There was something so special about their old school charm and quirky interior.
I have so many stories about this place, but Ill tell the most risky one:Some time around 2008-2010 I noticed a Starbucks set up around the corner from them. This is was right when starbucks started doing free wifi (before that it was u paid 4 dollars for internet lul). Slave had no wifi. At the time I was 15-17 years old and learning offensive security from online tutorials. Back then people had WEP key security for wifi. I booted up my backtrack linux distro and cracked into a local network(to this day, I still have no clue whos network it was). Slipped the baristas the net ID and password and Im pretty sure they used that for several years without issue. I wanted them to have a even playing field in the coffee wars.Today I live in Boston, but stopped by and bought a zip up hoodie to support Slave in the Pandemic because it was such a integral spot to my teenage years. The best part about the hoodie is it smells like the same place I remember back then. Chess games, cracking wifi passwords, and working on college papers.
Im a loyal customer because of the variety of coffees they have here but yesterday was probably one of the worst (covid) services Ive experienced. First of all, the barista was more focused on talking to seated customers rather than the line forming. I saw she was hiding a vape in her hand, but not that well obviously, and she was using it as she was speaking to the other customers. Also, she had on plaid pajama bottoms, which I found very unprofessional and strange. I find that their vibe is relaxed and chill but pajamas is kind of taking it too far. Moreover, after taking my order, she kept lowering her mask to tell stuff to other coworkers. That seemed unnecessary especially during covid times. Plus she wasnt telling them anything important, of which I would understand. All in all, gave them a 4-star because of their coffee and typical customer service is good.
No glitz or pretense here. This throwback coffee house is a consistant performer. S to the G has been around forever turning out great coffee and tea, plus all the drinks that pretend coffee and tea drinkers drink without the whistles and buzzers that the national brand deals...except for the bell that is rung to salute tippers. In closing, if a great caffeine fix is what youre after, Slave to the Grind is your place.
Not the best coffee, it always smells amazing in here though and it’s not too pricey. I loved the iced chai lattes but stopped getting them after I asked to see the tea they use. It’s an instant tea mix with milk powder and some weird preservatives and dried hydrogenated oils. The staff is usually pretty inappropriate. They’re nice to customers but always on their phones (not a huge deal, they still pay attention to customers) and they have conversations that are inappropriate to have in front of customers, ie about getting drunk on the weekend and gossip about their friends. Really odd.3 stars for the charm of this small town coffee shop but 2 stars for what your paying for.
The best coffee in Bronxville. The prices are reasonable. BEWARE OF THE FEES. Where I would say they are going wrong is with the 50 cent fee on credit cards. Come on! Really that is way more than what anyone pays. 4% is the traditional number for service fees. So I would recommend using cash at this place. A large coffee is $2.75 which is a great deal. It is not a great deal when they add another 50 cents. Slave to the Grind though makes a great cup of coffee. And in the end that is what really matters.
Great local coffee shop in the heart of Bronxville. They have so many beans to choose from to bring home and brew yourself, but if thats not your cup then you can grab one there! I love it when they keep their doors open letting you smell the coffee before even going inside!
SttG is about as homey and cozy as a Westchester County coffee shop can afford to be. Youll see Sarah Lawrence students engrossed in coursework, the regular smoking crowd at night, and a semi-rotating staff of generally wonderful baristas. Dont count on finding a table (such is the price of coziness) but about six exist between the front and back ends of the main counter with about eight seats along the walls accompanied by long, bar-style countertops. Definitely adequate room to place a laptop, open a book, and place a VERY well-made coffee-bean brew. Free and fast Wi-Fi, outlets for electronics, and a wide variety of coffee flavors and treats. The only improvement, if even possible, would be the addition of a second room for seating. A second-story study of Holmesian design would be a dream. Bookshelves and all. But I ask too much. The owner is a huge supporter of those in recoverry programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, and gives hefty discounts to those who served in uniform, including RNs, EMTs, Police, and Firefighters! Not only a staple of Bronxville culture, Slave to the Grind is a truly unique exemplar of what it means to be a community business; it seeks not only to serve its clientele, but endeavors to heal and empower its neighbors, too.P.S. The smokers out front are non-hostile, feel free to greet these wonderful people- if not start a conversation!
Great place, I enjoy having a properly tamped espresso. However, sometimes the baristas hand me luke warm, watery drinks, signaling to me that they didnt steam my milk long enough. They have an assortment of different syrup flavors, but the bottles are off to the side and are difficult to read; I have looked for a list and there is none. I think this would really help them and potentially speed up the process of ordering. Lastly, there is no sign that says when youre ordering milk other than whole (like skim or soy) they charge you extra/how much extra, and no sign letting me know that if I use a credit/debit card they charge .25 cents extra. Not that I mind but some people do and it would be nice for a heads up.Overall nice place and Im glad theres a fresh coffee place in lower Westchester.
I dont write reviews after a single visit anywhere. Ive gone to Slave to the Grind several times, and this place is the epitome of hit or miss, depending on the barista. The last time I was there the I ordered an Iced Soy Latte and it was a disaster. I probably would have been better off going to Starbucks, which pains me to say.Im not familiar with any of the other coffee houses in lower westchester, but Slave to the Grind is a distant third when compared to quality roasters like Coffee Labs (Tarrytown) and Black Cow (Pleasantville).
I showed up with 5min until closing time and the staff had already locked the door and didn’t even acknowledge that I was at the door, in scrubs, heading to work all night. They could easily have poured a cup of drip coffee that I watched them pour down the sink before their closing time.
This place initially gave off a good impression, but then I bought a coffee from here & there was a gnat in my coffee. The employee there didn’t apologize for the inconvenience of it, nor did he react in a shocked manner as if this wasn’t the first time it may have happened.
God Bless you Andy. RIP. 2022-01-20Hands down one of the best coffees in the town. We were going to have a long day at work so decided to grab two and loved it. There is a place to sit and do some work as well but it does get busy. I have to admit that the staff was really quick and with few mins the line disappeared and we had the cafe to ourselves. Orange cranberry scone was delicious as well.

2022-01-10This is a nice spot. The staff is friendly. There is a great selection of coffee. Prices are fair in my opinion. I am very particular about cappuccinos. I have been craving one ever since I left work as a barista. But this place looked like they could make a good one. So I ordered a medium, vanilla cappuccino and I was not disappointed. It was really, really good. If you like bone dry capps, you will need to specify. Mine was not as light as I would have made it, but it was delicious. My boyfriend ordered a toasted almond cream, drip coffee. He did not care for that one. However, there are so many options here, I will gladly come back to try their other offerings.

2021-09-04This place is really cool! They have a lot of variety of coffee beans which they can grind for you. Interesting flavors like red velvet. They have a large variety of iced coffee flavors as well! Their oat milk latte tasted fantastic! Staff is friendly and there’s plenty of seating inside and outside. I liked how the staff had lots of regulars come by. It just shows how great this place is. I found the music to be really great here too. They also have apparel. Thank you for your hospitality Slave to the Grind.

2022-04-18Famous coffee shop (with Wi-fi), $2.25 regular coffee (12 oz), nice selection of sweet and savory pastries + good selection of cookies, multiple flavored syrups (+$1), alternate milks etc. They also have tea, chai, 6 special in-house drinks and sell coffee beans (17-20 per pound). There is a $5 minimum for card payments.I had the smores hot chocolate which was a fun idea but poorly executed as the graham crackers were on the hot chocolate instead of the marshmallows on top. Thus the graham crackers were soggy and not enjoyable. The hot chocolate part was good though.

2022-01-23AMAZING!! the line was long but thats how you know its good!! The customer service was excellent and they did not drag out the wait time. Walking into the shop and seeing the line can intimidate you but DO NOT LEAVE! IT IS WORTH THE WAIT.I ordered a caramel latte and it was brewed to perfection. It was my first cup of coffee for the day, so we all know it matters most. They did not fail and I will be coming back again!Thank you for the speedy service and gifting us with delicious coffee and treats.

2022-01-23Delicious hot cocoas and good espresso. Got the s’mores hot cocoa here twice and loved it both times, along with a lovely hot mocha. Espresso is smooth and strong when ordering a dry cappuccino here as well. Very happy to return and come again! Always busy though so be prepared to wait a few minutes on line.

2022-04-29I drive over 20 minutes, everyday during the week (and even sometimes on weekends) to get my coffee from Slave to the Grind! The men and women who take care of the customers there are nothing shy of PHENOMENAL.The coffee is astounding - I have legitimately never have a bad anything from here, ever. EVERYTHING IS CONSISTENTLY A++This is a business that clearly cares about their community, that is dedicated to its loyal (and new) customers, and that takes pride in the products they serve on the daily - and it shows!

2022-06-29Horrible coffeshop, manager obviously treats workers poorly because it all looks like they hate their job and hate dealing with any customer interactions, they are blatantly on their phones and have no shame and have done it on numerous occasions. Coffee prices have increased drastically. They have also ignored me on multiple occasions. They lost a once loyal customer. One of the tall young men who worked there is extremely unfriendly and has poor communication skills. The music is also always too loud and the workers can never hear me and vice versa. Do not support this small business.

2021-07-04Store-bought, soggy, burned croissant! I asked for 2 toasted croissant. First, they gave me two (store-bought) croissant that’s totally cold and soggy without toasting it. Since I had to take a bite on one of them to find out, I only took back one of them to be toasted. I was treated as a nuisance even if it is them who forgot to toast the croissants in the first place. They unwillingly took the croissant and BURNED it. For one, I expected the local bakery to bake their own croissant. If you have to buy them from Costco, at least be willing to toast it and NOT BURN it.
