Found this pet store on google and went for the first time today got my hamster there I’m really pleased with the attention received really professional and willing to help really happy with the experience today my hamster is super sweet and love to be carried and most importantly doesn’t bite that was exactly what I was looking for ..
The people there were friendly and very knowledgeable about the animals in the store.
Great little place, parking in the rear. They have a really nice selection of freshwater, saltwater fish, invertebrates, and plants. Selection and health of the animals puts big box pet stores to shame. They have a great selection of products for all other animals as well. I was actually surprised by the pricing too, very reasonable! Will definitely be going back!
Fish tanks are very clean. Owner/ manager is super friendly and knowledgeable. I would visit this store any time Im in that area. Would recommend to any hobbyist. Not only did he have some pretty rare fish, he also has nice plants. The birds are very pretty also but Im not a bird guy.
Always nice. Never smells like Petco or petsmart. They interact with their in store animals which is great. Always helpful. Also they have an extra perk If you have a huge fish tank that needs to be cleaned they come and do it.
We found this place from word of mouth we figured we would give it a try for our Aquarium needs. Jake was very pleasant and informative, he was able to answer all our questions and suggest some things to us that we were unaware of. It’s hard to find an aquarium that you can trust. I think we found one now. Lastly there tanks are clean and all the fish look healthy. We bought fish they are all happy and healthy in there new homes. We will be back.
Today was the first time going to this store. Called first they were extremely helpful over the phone. Store was packed but not chaotic. They have an enormous selection of fish, all healthy. Prices are comparable to a chain store but the selection was 100 times better and so was the stock. Was helped by a man named Joe, very informative and professional. Will be going back thats for sure.
I bought 3 coreys from them and 3 loaches which all died within 4 hour of being in my tank. I’ve had fish for over 6 years and have only lost 3-5 fish ever!!! To have 6 fish like that die that quickly shows pour quality in fish. Was told to bring I a water sample but explained that I live over a hour away and was told I can’t get a credit unless I had the water. Unbelievable. Have been to many other local fish stores which honor your word ..... won’t be going back here again
Love this place the owners know their business. What I like in the aquariums you see dont a bunch of dead fish in the tanks. Which means fish could be infected
Went to South Shore Tropicals a few weeks ago for the first time. I was looking for a porcupine puffer.They had the puffer I was searching for and she is doing amazing.Very helpful staff and it’s now my favorite pet store to shop at.Timothy
I am a newbie aquarium owner who had it thrust on him by an overzealous grandparent, lol. I can say that the advice provided during my fish buying experience was worthwhile at this location more than the others. Heck I had a leporninous who was attacking my plecos and they without question were willing to give me credit to find a fish better suited to my tank. Turns out the yellow parrot is a big hit now in my aquarium and is simpatico with the rest of the fish.I appreciate the family environment there and the knowledgeable advice provided. I would recommend them to anyone looking to add new quality fish to their tank.
Birds are poorly cared for. Filthy water, poor diet, overgrown beaks, large birds in small cages, no toys for the small birds. It was heart breaking.
Awesome place, awesome people. Prices on live plants cant be beat, neither can the quality of them. A huge selection of fish as well makes south shore one of the best. Gotta appreciate small businesses, especially during covid.
First time visiting, James welcomed me and shared knowledge. I purchased an electric blue Acura. Store and tanks are clean and organized. we. Fish look very healthy, will go back again.
I think the people who work here think Im insane because I come here A LOT. Ive been here like 30 times in the last 3 months. Every time I come, I see something cool and Im not new to aquariums. They have so many fish to choose from and they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. If I ask for a fish they dont have they try to get them in or let me know when the next shipment comes. Definitely my favorite place to get aquascaping supplies as well and Ive been to almost every fish store within a 20 mile radius. They have everything from substrate and anchored driftwood, to dragonstone and live plants. Lots to choose from.

I have personally gone here to buy food, toys, hides for my small pet mouse, Bubs. I have loved the selection, the fact that there are wheels in stock that are made to fit a variety of sizes of rodents, & the price for fresh products! I have purchased a grass hide for only 3$ that my mouse absolutely LOVES and I love it too because of the natural product & limited packaging. My boyfriends mom convinced me to go here (as I am someone whod rather research & buy online) as she uses products from here to care for her three dogs, two birds (parrot & west african grey), sugar gliders, and lizards. Really awesome place- thank you!
I worked with James after setting up my first aquarium. He supplied me with knowledge on literally everything from setting up the tank, to cleaning, lighting, heating and what fish go well together. He had almost every product I needed at very competitive prices and ordered me any products that he didnt have in store. Would highly recommend to anyone who values service and industry knowledge from a great local shop. I wouldnt have this aquarium without them.
Every employee is friendly, knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. Their fish tanks are kept immaculately, everytime I visit I never see a dead fish in their tanks. Their saltwater section is small but the quality is amazing. Their corals are all healthy and they usually have exotic fish that are hard to come by.
Everyone was friendly but not quick to help a wandering customer. Thankfully James stepped up and was very helpful and polite. Beautiful store with great looking tanks. Very clean, fish look happy and healthy. Would definitely go back.

Small tropical fish store.One of my bi monthly rotations. Staffs here generally are helpful and knowledgeable. Price wise livestock is definitely cheaper than long island average. Some of the items are so cheap that I get serious temptation to buy. Selectionwise it is pretty okay for average fish keeper. Convenient parking at the back when side parking is full.
An amazing array of different kinds of exotic pets and they all seem so happy! I love the parrot that you can visit and it just crawls onto your shoulder its so cute. The customer service is amazing. The guys that work here are so friendly and knowledgeable. The prices are great too. One of the best places Ive ever been to!!
Ive been a customer for over 10 years and I have yet to be disappointed. Their stock is always healthy from plants to fish and there is always a great variety. I also find their volunteers to be very knowledgable and helpful. These guys know what theyre doing and Id definitely recommend this store for anyone interested in their pets.
John, James and Anthony run the best aquarium and small animal store on Long Island. Bar None. South Shore Tropicals is well stocked with everything and anyone you need or want in your aquarium. In addition to those beautifully presented aquatics, they offer all manner of bird, reptile and even cat and dog supplies for their customers convenience. Their combined knowledge of all that they stock and sell is extremely impressive and pretty hard to find. All of this, of course, offered at excellent prices and with sincere, friendly service. Growing a business and a steadfast customer following in an ever shrinking environment of neighborhood aquarium and pet stores is no mean feat. Running a store like theirs, requires constant cleaning, feeding, monitoring and stocking. You will never find them sitting around chatting. Instead, you will see them in constant motion taking care of this beautiful store. This is a jewel of a store in a sea of corporate run warehouses-where even finding a kid at the cash register is a challenge; no less someone who knows their stuff! I would never go anywhere else,
Amazing service! Wanted to get two baby cockatiels for my wife, and they were more than helpful in getting the birds in time for her birthday, as well as providing me with everything that we needed to get started. The staff is very friendly, always well stocked with items and very free with their advice...buy local and you will be satisfied every time.

My fish all died from there. With in 3 to 10 days. Tried them 3x. They checked my water, nothing wrong. They do not warranty their fish. Been going to Petco, no problems with my new fish. Its been a little over 8 months now.
Anthony has been helping me take care of a gecko and a bearded dragon for almost a decade. Knowledgeable, organized. Clean shop, animals in good health. Solid helpful crew. I wouldnt go anywhere else.

The guys are extremely helpful. They are obviously more interested in the care of aquatic life than selling you anything. Thats why its more than just a business! If youre looking to get an aquarium or other small pets or birds, I highly recommend.

Ive gone here 3 times and got ich in my tank twice from their fish. I even asked the associate if there was ich in one of their tanks because I thought I saw it and he assured me there wasnt. I came home with a puffer fish from that tank only to have it die 3 days later covered in ich. The time before that, I purchased 2 gauramis, 1 giant pleco, and 1 shark about 10 inches long. The giant pleco and shark died within a week, also covered in ich. Ive purchased fish from other places and never had this problem. Its not the condition of my tank because Ive got a few fish in there that have been alive for years. Luckily, Ive been able to stop the spread of the ich that Ive gotten from this store both times and preserve the lives of my other fish. They seem knowledgeable in this store but ultimately, theyre in it to make a sale. Definitely wont ever be going back here.

You will not find a better aquarium shop on Long Island. Extremely friendly, helpful and go the extra mile to help a customer. The staff here is the reason why I got into the aquarium hobby going from one tank to 7 tanks. They will get you what you need. I truly cant say enough about the overall experience at South Shore Tropicals.
Not only the best pet store on Long Island but the best staff. All have been in the business for 20+ years and know everything and anything you would ever need to know. Stay away from. Chain stores where some 15 year old that has no idea is working. This is the only place you need to go. Well worth the drive.

I discovered this shop about a month ago, and i got to say, by far this is the friendliest and most helpful petstore ive been to ever. Definetly not the largest shop but they have a very nice variety of fish and plants, excellent quality.
They have the most helpful and knowledgeable staff. Great selection of pets and supplies.. If they dont have what you are looking for theyll recommend something better or order it for you. Fish live stock - has gone from the best ever. To shall we say - I should have stayed away. What a mistake! Ick like I have never witnessed before. Internal as well as external parasites. And some with issues I never have seen before. I guess they sell you fish.... Then fish treatments to get them well. What a racket. My God what were they thinking. Better yet what was I thinking.I guess as always. Caveat Emptor! Buyer Beware!

2022-02-10(Cassidy’s husband writing this) since I got into the Hobby of fish a few months ago I’ve been going to this is great Place and find myself here atleast once a day or a couple times a week. Everyone here is honest and knows so much about the hobby and will always lead you in right direction and talk to you endlessly about anything you have questions on. There fish are always in great condition and I’ve yet to have an issue with anything I’ve bought(fish wise/anything) and will continue to make this my fish store of choice. Thanks guys and I’ll be back soon !

2022-05-05Very limited selection of hamsters. I like to support small businesses though so I bought a dwarf hamster from them even though I wanted a regular one because they didnt have any standard size available. Nice little store seems like its mostly aquarium supplies.

2021-12-22Anthony sold me two corals and since Im new at starting corals Anthony told me that there was nothing wrong with them but after a week of having them in my tank all my fish caught ich so I called Anthony and explaining to him and also bringing to his attention what he had mentioned reminding him that he stated that there was nothing wrong with them wholesale letting him know that I didnt have any Coral dip hes still insisted that there was nothing wrong so after several minutes of talking to him he didnt even suggest trying to replace the fish that I lost due to taking his word for face value Im so heartbroken these pets are part of my family and had a long life to live and they were cut short due to the negligence of Anthony I dont believe that they care about the animals theyre only in this business for the money I feel that when he speaks to me well he sees his dollar signs and not the welfare of the animal so due to the fact that I got no sympathy or consideration from this individual I am no longer going to purchase not one thing from his business he lost me as a customer and Im very disappointed in him... This was a very special French angel that I had purchased from Anthony for $85 and due to his negligence he has passed away along with several others but I wanted it to be known that he did not offer any thing concerning my loss so so disappointed in this establishment
