Very good food and ambiance. Me and my husband had very good time. Food was very delicious. It was south Indian restaurant with proper authentic taste and this place was fully packed but still we got a nice corner. Owner was very nice and helped us so much to decide on menu. Love it. Will definitely go again.
I was there with my husband for the first time even though my husband was there couple of times with his colleagues. Happy that found it and Best authentic South Indian Restaurant which I have come across from last 3 years in Longisland. I felt like the price is little extravagant compared to other restaurants, but taste is worth the price!! And sure, Will not get disappointed!!
Chicken kothu porota: loved the spice level and flavor. It tasted like pasta. It was hard to differentiate the chicken and porota while eating since everything looked the same.Chicken dhum biriyani: It had a ton of whole garam masalas! I wish it was a bit spicier but now Im aware of their spice levels for future. The flavor was not bad and not the best. However, its not the worst either. Im going to attempt their lamb biriyani next time. The owner was nice enough to give me some chettinad curry to try it with the biriyani. I loved the curry sauce! I liked the biriyani after mixing it with that sauce. Im going to try the chettinad curry next time.Chettinad curry: on point! The spice level and the mixture of the garam masalas was blended really well.Almond halwa: I have never tried this one so it was my first. I was expecting it to be like barfi but it obviously wasnt. It tasted pretty good. A very different taste and not bombarded with a ton of sugar which was the best part. The almond mixture was really smushed so that was a new taste and experience in my mouth.Cucumber raita: this was the only part of my experience that I disliked. I think it truly lacked salt, cumin, and the greens. I have definetly tasted better raita unless raita recipe is made differently in south India then Im not sure.On good note, I will definetly go back to try other dishes. Next will be their dosas and chettinad curries. I will be recommended others about this place.
We ordered a veg dum biriyani and gobi manchurian. The owner also gave us a complimentary gobi 65. The biriyani and machurian were really good, spicy and flavorful. Gobi 75 was average, it lacked salt and was a bit bland. The owner was very friendly and the service was good.
Listen this is the BEST Indian food I had! My wife always gets the FRESH fish and I get the chicken masala ( mild ) I’m a white boy I can’t hang! I moved to Huntington and nothing I mean nothing compares to this place. The owner and staff are amazing people. Go try it out you never know, this might be your new favorite spot.Joe
I ordered SS chicken biryani, SS chicken appetizer & Goat palav biryani. Great taste & delicious . During driving & when we open the dishes at home biryani & palav smell was awesome. Usually my wife doesn’t like outside biryani but she liked a lot and we ordered second time within two days.
Southern Spice is one of my favorite restaurants around this area. I have never been disappointed from the food I have had from from Southern Spice. The food is fresh, spicy, flavorful and aromatic as authentic Chettinad Cuisine. My favorites are chicken Chettinadu, Prawns Varuval and chicken Kuruma.I have eaten in and taken out. While eating in the food arrives with little delay, The chef does a good job, waiters are pleasant and the owner is a polite gentleman. I have also ordered on phone and online both were good experience.Tip: Have the food spicy, try not to measure the spice level on a scale of 5, instead let the chef prepare it as it’s prepared in South India.
Worst food, very spicy ordered medium spice got very spicy we could not eat and worst part is that 15 percent tip that was forced in bill where food was terrible. This was for a table of 3 and nowhere mentioned in menu while ordering..would not mind if food was good. Personally there are other options in Hicksville that have good South Indian flavor without overwhelming spice.
Okay so for starters ... I decided to give southern spice a try since I was recently turned off to Indian cuisine. Sri is Super friendly, patient and very helpful as I can be a bit picky. The cauliflower 65 is hands down my super favorite thing to eat here. The king fish is awesome especially when I dipped it in the manchrian cauliflower with chili sauce. Omg then they have this extra spicy chili chutney that is so delish on everything if you love spicy like me! Another thing Ive had ( since I been here back to back like 4x ) was the chickpea and spinach! If your looking for a great Indian restaurant to try this one is hands down worth the stop! I feel like I found an under ground gem 😁! A new thing Ive been ordering is the bhindi fry, its fried okra with onions and spices. I come here especially for that and the cauliflower 65, yum!
The food was good, we got the chicken biryani and chicken tikka masala, and they both tasted authentic enough. With that said, we felt the spice was lacking for both dishes compared to homestyle Indian cooking (it may just be that the food is catered more towards American taste buds though)
Friendly owner, happy waiters, and food that make you smile!I and my wife have always been craving for Indian food ever since we met in Boston (there were many India restaurants right outside MIT campus) years ago. Now with a young son we do not have much time to eat out. Looking for best restaurants that satisfy our taste bubs for each different cuisine has became a never ended quest.Southern Spice is definitely our holy grail of Indian cuisine. The fusion cooking made from the most authentic and FRESH (yeah, that fresh) ingredients exceed our expectation after 20 years and hundred different Indian restaurants in different countries.Favorite dishes: ALL.
The food is fantastic. Its a little different and tastier than the usual Indian fare. Favorites are the Chicken-65, but ask for it old-fashioned before they made it more mild, and the Dosai. This weekend we previewed a Paneer dish from the upcoming menu - it was cheesy and minty and flavorful. The decor and service are adequate but noting to write home about. But the prices are low, so Im not expecting 5 star service.Caveats as of May 2012: The photo on Google maps is out of date. It shows some other restaurant. They dont have a liquor license yet, so BYOB from home - or go across the street to the Indian market and pick up a few Kingfishers.
What spices you want public to taste when ur chef even did not put salt in a dish. Yes this is their reality did not even put salt! Guess what dish was like boiled in water and oil on top!! Don’t ever do with who belong to spices. Would be worst restaurant in my list!
The points are for ambience and service. Food was not nice. Chettinad curry and dosa did not qualify to be called Chettinad. Samosa chat was nice and fresh. Chicken dum biryani was not a bum biryani as to be called dum biryani there need to be layers of different flavors in a biryani.
Authentic South Indian deliciousness.Hyderabad mutton biriyani (5/5) : flavorful, filing, good portion of meat.Masala dosa (4/5) : filing and tasty, though missed out on the crispness.Masala tea (2/5) : goes well with masala dosa but lacks the masala flavor.Service (5/5) : friendlyAtmosphere (5/5) : currently (Nov 2020) Southern Spice is doing takeout only due to COVID but I have had the pleasure of visiting this establishment multiple times before and it was pleasing with a touch of Indian flavor without overdoing it. Background Indian music was a nice touch. To sum it up, slightly pricey compared to other Indian restaurants around but definitely worth checking out if you are into Indian food, more specifically South Indian (on the more spicy side of the name didnt give out away). I will definitely be back.
Outstanding southern Indian cooking! Highlights of our visit included: Chicken 65, samosa chaat, Chicken Chettinad, vegetable dosa, a delicious spinach/chickpea/tomato mash and Tandoori chicken. The owner is very friendly and even gave us a wonderful introduction to Classical Indian music! VERY REASONSABLE and, BYOB!!!! This restaurant is a Long Island gem and a very nice departure from so many hum-drum Northern Indian restaurants. WE WILL BE BACK!
Best chettinadu food. I always order from here for our family functions. There chettinadu curry, chicken tikka, chicken 65, briyani and fish moli. Wow best of the best. What I really like is fresh ingredients and fresh food. I know the owner and he is humble and very down to earth person.
No surprise why this restaurant is unoccupied - food is awful , chicken is atleast 3 days old ( I believe). And the worst part, the dude with spectacles was forcing me for tip ?? What on earth made him think I’m gonna tip him for such awful experience. I wish I could rate ZERO
Food is ok but one old man I think he is main manager look tall .he act only manners.he is gready.he looks people for more tips.today I go there and eat food .all food serve and take my plate all 2 young boys .last bill pay with my discover card.i going to out that time old tall man (looks manager of waiters) came and ask me 15%tips must in newyork .next time you came no 15% tips he kick out from there restaurant.

2022-06-02We stopped in for a late lunch. Ordered butter chicken, malai kofta, and alu gobi, and paratha. I’m in a bit of a food coma following our feast but wow was it delicious. Each dish had such care into the preparation of all components, and such freshness in the curries. The malai kofta may be the best I’ve ever had, so tender and delicious and the curry was phenomenal. We always order alu gobi and somehow this was also an especially delicious preparation. Will definitely stop by again when we’re in the area.

2022-06-03I have a lot of experience with Southeast Asian food given that my background and heritage is from there. The quality of the food at Southern Spice is among the best that I have ever had. The owner is very considerate and professional, you will not find better service elsewhere. If you are in the area, this is the place to go to fulfill your Indian cuisine cravings.

2022-04-27Never have I been so disappointed with my online order. I had to give one star because I cannot give zero or negative stars. I ordered goat dum biryani for lunch and picked it up around 12 PM. I strongly believe they gave me the overnight leftover biryani because the rice was so dry, They were pieces of clumped dried rice with the biryani. I had to drink water with every few bites, they were like five pieces of meat. It is highly overpriced and the taste is subpar. I would never be ordering anything from this restaurant ever again.

2017-11-08This is a very special place for true Southern Indian cuisine! You will not see any typical Indian art or statues, no paintings of gods either. This place is actually Indian owner and run! Let the colorful walls and the sound of classic jazz keep you company as you await some of the best Indian food in the entire area, if not the entire country. Made to order, dairy free and vegan available. Great personalized service!!

2019-06-21Ive gone to southern spice various times for lunch but didnt get a chance and this time being for a birthday party and a small group, it was perfect. ( masala dosa, veg biryani, uptthapam, veg thali, egg curry) the food was super delicious as pictures show empty plates lol. The lunch menu when brought to table is rather large so you can get the dishes and everyone can taste the variety.

2019-04-01The biryani is not for a connoisseur .. it is pretty basic, paneer chetinnad was very bland nothing chettinad style .. the three stars are for samosa chat and dosa.Paneer chettinad was also not up to the mark.Malai cofta was too mushy. Review 2- it was good. I mixed all the food together and then ate it. It tasted really good. Service was excellent as well.

2021-12-18Listen this place is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! The owner is a stand up guy, and when I call he knows my wife and I off the bat. When we ask for fish he will make it for us, and he’s honest saying if the fish is good or not. Come on what place would actually tell you that? I guarantee when you leave this place your taste buds are singing and your belly is full!! GO GIVE IT A TRY!

2022-01-10I bought three items like chicken-65, nabaratna Corma and chicken beriyani.I dislike this restaurant very much. My whole family are super disappointed. Very bad taste of chicken beriyani and nabaratna corma. No taste at all. Vegetables are raw. Got old smell of chicken that means its not properly marinated.Chicken-65 is okay but less quantity. But very expensive in comparison to other restaurants around here.I will never go there. Just put one star because of chicken-65.
