Stopped in on a rainy Friday night. Atmosphere was welcoming, not too loud but still lively.Service was great. My mule was perfect and my boyfriends black and tan was beautifully poured!Fried mushrooms come with a delicious garlic sauce. The Sheppards pie and spinach salad were very tasty. The salad was first brought out with craisins that were not on the menu/description but the waitress quickly brought me another without them.Would definitely go back. There is a nice loft area that looked perfect for a group dinner.
There are about a half dozen Irish (or Irish-themed) pubs in the area. I liked St James Gate best, just has a nice pub feel, good service, relaxed vibe and somewhat affable clientele. Plus over the weekend of St Patricks day (Sunday) I could always find a spot to slide into even though there was always a pretty good crowd. Nice pint of Guinness.
I want to express my absolute gratitude to the staff. Dan, Lisa, Kevin and Emily. They were professional, courteous and just a real pleasure . These folks are a tremendous attribute to your establishment. I will definitely be back… they made my week in James Island, Folly Beach an absolutely joy ☘️☘️☘️ Thank you , MarkP
Waking around the city and our daughter feel asleep so we decided to grab a bite to eat. I left the decision up to my wife and she picked this place. We sat outside and service was excellent. I wish I knew his name because he was on top of everything.I decided to get the wings and nachos and my wife got the fish and chips, Needless to say we left full and happy. My biggest dissatisfaction was that they did not have Irish nachos st a Irish pub. I would be back again.
I really wanna like this place but every time I go, it just doesnt cut it. Great vibe, great location, but you really need to up your game, food-wise. I ordered a turkey burger tonight - hard to screw up? Was so over cooked it was inedible. Last time it was the chicken tenders. Im running out of simple foods to try.
Didnt expect much, but was disappointed with the drinks: dark and stormy was ok, the negroni tasted like I never tasted before as did the aperol spritz. The brussel sprouts were soggy with oil and too sweet and the mozzarella and tomato salad was also subpar to the many other times I order such at a restaurant. So... I wouldnt go there again
Had a great time at St. James Gate! The Bangers and Mash plate was the best I’d ever had! Staff were friendly and captivated us with their Irish accents. I do feel their prices were quite high, so not a place I could frequent regularly. But for the occasional go out and splurge, this place won’t disappoint.
A really top class Irish pub. The Guinness is always as it should be (a result of the volume they pour every day!) and the fish and chips I ate was generously proportioned and quite delicious.A great atmosphere for watching sports or having an informal night out. Super staff, always welcoming and friendly... genuine Irish charm!
Food isnt bad at all especially for the price.I went here with some friends for dinner and drinks and ordered the meatloaf. Gotta say it was quite tasty. And Im not really a fan of meatloaf. They serve a really solid Guinness which says alot for pubs in the states. Nothing beats Irish pubs in Ireland for Guinness but this place is good.Place is owned by a cool blond lady in her 40s I believe and she runs this place amazingly. Boss lady is no joke. Makes all her guests feel at home. But we had the best waistress Leah. Her knowledge of liquors, wines, and the intricacies of their menu is spot on. She wasnt annoying at all, made sure she was always attentive without being overbearing and was completely cool with how all 8 of us wanted to handle the bill at the end.Im definitely coming back here. If you want a good spot to watch sports, and drink a pint of good Guinness, then come to St James Gate...
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!! STAFF WAS FRIENDLY, WELCOMING, REALLY MADE ME FEEL COMFORTABLE. I WAS THE ONLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN IN THE BAR THAT NIGHT AND I FELT VERY WELCOMED. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. THANK YOU TO THAT WONDERFUL STAFF. FOOD WAS GREAT ALSO. 10 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This place is obviously one of the most attractive place in the neighborhood. Whenever I come to this place I am truly pleased. They manage their very high level service and the highest level of dishes they give. You surely will enjoy this this restaurant. Warmly recommended.
Nice local Irish pub, we received the greeting we should have, two foreigners from Long Island, stumbling around from pub to pub encountering only people half our age. Paul, owner/bartender, was quippy, lively, and friendly. one of the best Guinness pints Ive had. We meshed right into this regular haunt and were, for better or for worse, chatted up by the locals. Paul, beyond being charming and funny, took very good care of us. We will be back, Paul! Thank you!
I really enjoyed St. James Gate mainly because of the awesome bartender Paul. He made my few drinks there very enjoyable with some entertaining stories and genuine interest in his customers and entertaining them with conversation. I would recommend this spot for anyone looking for an authentic Irish pub feel in the upper west side.
A pub like all the rest, the food is meh and theyve got drinks. There is nothing to set it apart...except for poor service. I apologize that I have inconvenienced you, coming in here and now ordering drinks. I felt like saying in response to the servers apparent annoyance when I quickly ordered a pint of Guiness and a ginger ale. I asked politely for a separate check after he took my order, not having cash and having to leave earlier than everyone else. I thought this was the easiest solution. He quickly responded with no, explaining that if he gave me a separate check then everyone would ask for a separate check. Is he my grade school teacher? After my friend told him that, surely, he could do 1 separate check, the server relented. After 30 minutes or so, when it was time for my husband and I to leave, my husband offered to pay with a credit card. Again, no cash. The server said that there was a $15 minimum on credit cards. My husband asked him to charge $15, rather than the $11 bill. The server said no and pointed my husband in the direction of the ATM. One additional inconvenience and an ATM fee later, my husband paid the server $15 cash and we left. In the broad scheme of things, a rude server who refused to do a few simple things that would make the customers night a little more convenient (on a night when the pub wasnt crowded) isnt the end of the world. It wasnt a horrific experience. Perhaps the server was having an off night, maybe dealing with some personal issues. Fact remains that there are plenty of pubs in the vicinity, where I will choose to go to next time because, lets face it, why deal with these minor annoyances and a servers attitude when you dont have to, and this is the one night that you have had away from the kids in awhile? Id rather not stress it and Ill go somewhere else.
Probably my 4th time in UWS, an unfamiliar domain I have yet to explore, we searched for a cafe to study on a Sunday afternoon and ended up here at this restaurant/bar converted to cafe in the daytime. We sat down at one of the three open tables outdoors and ordered coffee which was just fine. The server did not push us to order food. The weather was absolutely gorgeous at a mild 75 degrees with the sun glazing, the tree providing sufficient shade and unnecessary droppings of pollen and mite size yellow bugs on the table, couples spending quality time on a stroll, dogs of all sizes and breeds pouncing back and forth, cars slowly passing by tailing a gentle breeze- a perfect picture of happiness in the pleasant Manhattan suburb. This is how Sunday is suppose to be spent. As time went by the sun slowly creeped into the table, on my legs, and to my arms and face, and I with the temperament and skin tone of a vampire, dashed away indoors and ended up studying next to a bunch of alcoholics drinking at 2pm Sunday afternoon. I cannot comment on the food, but the service and coffee (cream and sugar) were excellent.

2022-03-17St Patricks Day busy and a LIMITED menu. Corned beef on rye, no cabbage, no cheese. Just corned beef with a side of Ruffles chips. The corned beef was unseasoned and a bit tough. Im wishing that Id cancelled my to-go. Ill be cooking tonight, anyway.

2022-08-14I’ve been to this place twice and had the turkey sandwich both times, it’s incredible. I would never normally order something so boring but it’s excellent.

2022-06-18We all know that Irish pubs are a dime a dozen in Manhattan but this one stands out for the quality of the food and the service. We have eaten here several times and have always been welcomed with good timely service. There is a standard menu but also a chalkboard of specials every day. The craft beer selection is small but provides enough selection to find something youd like. The ambience is pretty typical for an Irish pub.

2022-04-05Plenty of Irish pubs in the city, but only one place to get this quality of fish and chips and beef stew! It’s so right! Outdoor / indoor excellent Guinness and great service!
