The FOOD here is exceptional! Its obviously a great restaurant - and has several years of a proven track record on delivering amazing Italian cuisine. I have been here quite a few times, but mostly for private parties. there is a lot of charm in this restaurant! My favorite dishes are start with the burrata MOZZARELLA DI BUFALA (similar to mozzarella, but more dense and flavorful) and then get one of their amazing pasta dishes! The great news is that you can now order online! the menu changes daily, so check the website for details. they also have outdoor dining
We hosted my daughters bridal shower brunch here and it was fantastic! Carol and Francesca made the planning of the event, including decorations and menu design, a pleasure. They also made sure that the food allergy of one of our guests was taken into account. On the day of, our guests were thrilled at how delicious the food and drinks were and how kind the servers were as the staff easily accommodated my guests requests. We went a bit over the scheduled time as the grooms surprise appearance was delayed by traffic. This was a non-issue as the staff allowed our guests to stay an extra hour. We would happily host other events at Supper and cannot wait to return to try their dinner menu.
One of the most authentic Northern Italian restaurant I’ve been to, love the Mozzarella di Bufala with prosciutto di parma super clean in taste and texture, also ordered the spaghetti al limone, the sauce is super creamy and flavorful, the lemon is very predominant which I love ! I recommend anybody who’s in for authentic Italian food in NYC !
The restaurant is in a great old building with lots of character, but the service was pretty slow and there is no protein included in most dishes. Prices are reasonsble for the City. The neighborhood is a bit rundown. The food was OK. Portions were OK. The bread was very good.
My husband and I had one date night while in NYC and we chose Supper. I had not been in 10 years but the memory of the food stayed with me. We ordered the burrata (divine!) and two pasta dishes, a bottle of wine and the tiramisu. We loved the pay for what you drink option, even though we drank the whole bottle :-) The outdoor seating was lovely and the service was fast, friendly and knowledgeable.
Loved the service, and right now has great options for both outside and indoor dining. The burrata tasted more like plain greek yogurt than the creamy goodness of a burrata.Chicken parm was delicious and a massive portion. The best at our table was the supper special which is Osso Bucco on Saturday night.
As for real Italian food, I think this one is actually authentic!!! Loved the menu and the range of food they offered. The service was good too. Please remember that the restaurant accepts ONLY CASH! I didnt know about this until I got there but the food made it up for it! Definitely will be going there again! I really liked the environment too which brings in old authentic lazy Italian summer days even in the middle of winter! Lastly, I loved their song selections!
If you’re in for some great Italian dinner, this place is Def the spot. Affordable pricing, with an authentic taste. Only thing, make sure you bring cash, hence the 4 out of 5 stars. highly recommend any of the offered pastas from the menu & ask for David who was such a wonderful server & host!
“Northern” maybe refers to north of Houston; “Italian” maybe in the way Tex-Mex is “Mexican”. The food is OK if you want kale gnocchi and caesar salad (which comes from Mexico, btw). It’s kind of the NY equivalent of a Basque restaurant from Nevada, more about the experience than the food.
Good quality of service and the heat lamps were good. However, they pack everyone so tightly that your shoulder is only 3ft away from the next person which makes it feel unsafe during the pandemic. The menu is also limited and entrees are about $25+. The drinks are watered down with a lot of ice which was disappointing. Their gluten free pasta was good though and when a friend had a problem with her dish, they were gracious and accommodating. This is a cash-only restaurant! Their receipt was confusing and old-fashioned so if you’re splitting up the bill, you’ll need to triple check your math.
Frank Prisinzano is a legend. Do yourself a favor...follow him on Instagram. Do yourself another favor...come to Supper. I love everything about this place. Nothing better than the rustic old school atmosphere at Frank’s restaurants. The roasted garlic and Asparagus Parm were mind blowing apps. If you find yourself here on a Saturday, get the Osso Buco and don’t look back. Trust me. If you’re in the mood for pasta, “The Timely Priest Stranglers” is absolutely perfect. The Hazelnut Panna Cotta was heavenly—please don’t skip it. This place just really does it for me. Will eat here in 25° weather outdoors. Frank, thank you.
The food was very good however, the burrata was overly “milky” and at $27 left a bad taste in my mouth (both literally and figuratively). Would have given this place a 4 but you lose a point for being cash only (get with it!)... Revised rating to a 1 due to arrogant owner. I’ve been to Italy, I know what good burrata tastes like. Maybe if you made it on premise instead of flying it in it’d taste better.
Cozy Italian place with an outdoor and indoor seating area. Tried a few different dishes now and most of them are tasty and have good sized portions. The drinks are just average though. Remember to get some cash when you dine here since they don’t accept credit cards.
We came here right before they closed on a week night and they still sat us. They gave us bread and a bean dip as a complimentary starter which was yummy. We ordered the Lasagna alla Bolognese and spaghetti aglio olio e peperoncino. Both pastas were delicious! The spaghetti was on the spicy side but the flavor was great. The service was really good and we certainly plan on being back to try more of their dishes!
I had my birthday dinner here last weekend and it was great. The entrees were unfortunately about 2 hrs late but we didnt even notice because the servers brought us an additional round of drinks, a round of shots, a round of appetizers, and dessert all on the house. It was so kind of them to do that!! They went above and beyond with customer service. There was no time limit on our table so we were there all night long and had the best time. THANK YOU for your hospitality and kindness!!! :)
Came in on what was supposed to be a dead Monday night to celebrate a friend being in town.We were a table of four and we arrived prompt at 6:30 when we made a reservation. We ordered two bottles of wine and four entrees (2x chicken, one salmon, one pesto gnocchi). We placed our food order at 7:15 since they were busy and our entrees did not arrive till 8:30. We asked our waiter several times if they could check on our food. They said they were too busy filling all of the Seamless orders they had placed instead. While I understand they were busy, but a bit rude that they said they had to prioritize the delivery services rather than us coming in to dine with them. I think we counted 15+ orders go out before our food came in. Lovely couple at the Table next us to also had the same experience. Worst part after all of that was that our food was over cooked.By the time we got our food, we just asked for the check since it would take forever based on the experience. $250+ that we could have spent on Seamless.Love Frank and follow him religiously on IG but not a great showing tonight. I wouldn’t be coming back anytime soon.
First our party of 6 got cramped all the way in the back, but after we asked they slowly moved us to a round table. We had outstanding food, but after we finish paying, our inattentive server required us to give at least 30$ tip. He said he was too busy with other tables to let us know its a minimum of 30 for 6 people on our check. Hopefully lil Frankies is better.
Ive eaten here a few times now and as someone who grew up with an Italian grandma Ill say the food is pretty exceptional. Ive had the veal parmesan twice and it is delicious, its a pretty decent sized piece of veal and is cooked to perfection. Ive also had the cacio e pepe which was very good. Other notables are the burrata and youre started with some nice bread with oil and beans. I obviously have had no issues repeating and will likely continue to do so. My only complaint is that its cash only, which is a minor inconvenience.
Burrata = expensive but worth itKale gnocchi (not pictured) = some of the best gnocchi Ive hadGrilled salmon = YES DO IT AMAZINGShortrib tortelloni = last and least favorite. Was Good!! but a bit heavier than expectedGreat service as well, the big man was a sweetheart and gave great advice. Will be back!!
Not one to leave reviews but i felt like this was necessary. I ordered from the place randomly last night after a late flight back from California and hands down one of the best Italian places I think I’ve had in Manhattan. The spaghetti bolognese was delicious and had so much flavor. Will definitely I have to try in person next time I’m craving Italian food.
Sat at empty dinner bar for 10 minutes waiting for someone ANYONE to acknowledge us as cooks behind the counter played on their phones…no one seems to need our busine$$ and we had 10 more people meeting up so $500 bill, tip 0 on a dead night. We are former servers & bartenders who were always looking to make a buck! Oh well…we went to Boulton & Watt across the street!!! Killer apps & vibe!
Wonderful experience in superb dining in a classic Italian atmosphere with excellent service and most importantly tast delicious food. From the Capri salad to the incredible gnocchi to basked salmon and the most incredible lemon pepper pasta with cheese. If you have nothing else, dont miss the pasta. We were 15 people with a private room and ore fun menu. Im sure we missed other great offerings.Skip the desserts.
What an amazing brunch. We sat outdoors and enjoyed dinner amazing music and a wonderful mix of foods. We went for brunch but ended up ordering a number of great dinner type dishes too. The zucchini tagliatelle with lemon was delicious and simple and light. What an impressive dish! We also had some incredibly gnocchi, risotto, and some french toast.Cant recommend Supper enough for a tasty relaxed meal with a great energy and relaxed feel.
One of our favorite Italian restaurants in the city and in my opinion the best out of Frank’s restaurants! Food is consistently excellent - if you spot the prosciutto tagliatelle on the specials definitely go for it. Other favorites are the short rib tortellini (sauce is unbelievable) and of course can’t go wrong with the chicken parmigiana. I love the wine menu - there are some really great affordable grapes you don’t see too often. The waiters are kind and definitely top notch. Always enjoy the service and the guys there are the best.I do think the hostess could be nicer. Have never felt particularly welcome.
Used to LOVE this place but it’s gone downhill. Food quality is my only serious complaint. Service was OK if a little frantic. We were seated right on time. However, once we were seated we waited over 45 minutes for the main dish and did not order any apps. The roasted chicken was a huge disappointment. It was completely over cooked, dried out and tasteless.I wondered if they forgot to season it. Hard to figure this out as the roast chicken from Frank, their sister restaurant is actually delicious. The company knows how to do chicken but not here. My partner thought the tortellini pasta was fine. I was less impressed. I want to come back and give it another chance but it will have to be as good as it used to be or I’m done. P.S. they took the chicken off the bill when I explained my problem. Excellent customer service. I’ll try again!
Unfortunately, I did not have a good meal here. The quality of the food was very poor for the price. The mashed potatoes under my pasta tasted like boxed potatoes, and the short rib inside of my tortelloni tasted like really poor quality meat. For a $30 dish, I wasn’t impressed. The service was OK, but not great. No one was wearing masks while preparing the food either, and they were playing on their phones and then touching food without wearing gloves or washing their hands.
Lovely authentic Italian with indoor and outdoor seating. We sat inside, which was calmer than outside but also a very small room. Our waiter was a true Italian which made the experience and his recommendations stand out! The food was excellent and would gladly return again.
Honestly some of the best Italian food I’ve had outside of Italy. Service is 3/5, no major complaints just not amazing.Just…cash only?! I mean it’s 2021, this is ridiculous. Nonetheless, I’d make the trip to the ATM and come here again…I imagine most of the other guests feel the same way which is why they haven’t moved to accept credit cards.
A GREAT dining experience! This restaurant is a must try! We had a large group and we sampled almost every appetizer. All were delicious!! We also split several entrees. The pasta is fresh and homemade. All of the wait staff were friendly and attentive. I will definitely go back!
Very delicious food, pro service. Supper does a great job at delivering a fine dining experience without all the fluff - you can come as you are but youll be treated very well.My only issue are the prices - over the years its been getting up there. Not the cheapest experience but a good date spot. Outdoor seating is done well and feels safe.
Frank became so important to our family during covid as he started releasing cooking techniques and videos. As my dad started to decline due to stomach cancer food because medicine and we looked for inspiration everywhere. Frank became a muse and inspired so many family meals before he passed. Now that we can finally travel coming to supper was a bit of a pilgrimage. We feasted on the daily risotto blooming with fragrant saffron, short rib ravioli stuffed with succulent meat and pesto gnocchi which brighten the palate with bright fresh flavors. I asked for a wine recommendation which suited our meal beautifully and was I wine I never would have picked for myself (Chianti by consumption, as recommended). They were extremely responsive for for are drop silverware and glasses of empty water. I absolutely love supper and we go back at any time. 😍😍😍
We were looking for something classic with a modern take when it came to having an Italian dinner. Sometimes I struggle to try new things when it comes to Italian, especially when a reputable Chicken Parm is on the menu but I did also try the Spaghetti al limone which was fantastic.Great service, very interesting dining set up where they have at least 4 time the amount of tables outside as they do in. The inside is very busy and hectic but not for me, it was fun to watch the servers and expo line, really cool actually. The two top inside is a fun place to sit.Even going to the bathroom is an experience because you have to cross really close to the expo line which for me isnt an issue Im comfortable in that environment but I could see how accidents could happen with guests and staff very easily.Great food and service. I always wanted someones revered Italian grandmother to make me Chicken Parm and I feel like I got that at Supper, very good ingredients and textures on of the best dishes ever created by man.
Alright, nothing too special.Service was the highlight. The pastas were good, but they’re very aggressive with cheese/oil/butter so it’s not hard to see why things are tasty.I had the Anolini and was pretty let down by the dish compared to what my friends had - small portion and the pasta had an odd texture to it.The prices are a tad aggressive for the quality I just described. $17.00 for a Caesar salad. $25.00 for the pastas across the board (all had 0 meat). There’s better Italian places at the same price level and better Italian places that are cheaper. Given the crowd that was there, it’s clear the fact it is expensive is a draw.
Had to wait a very long time for my food. The workers were really apologetic and sent over an appetizer and wine on the house. I would come back due to the service and the fact they acknowledged it was taking a while. Then, once the food came I did not like my meal, the waiters were also very accommodating and understood that I wanted a different dish and didn’t charge me, as they should. Very good food too, it ended up being worth the wait.
Really enjoyed our dinner at Supper tonight. We were a party of 4 and one of our party was nearly 30 mins late and they said nothing, continued providing good service and then when she finally turned up they were perfectly genial.Food was excellent, drinks were even better (Get the ginger Bourbon Cocktail its great) and finally if you have room for dessert get the Tiramisu its excellent. We had a great night
This is now one of my favourite Italian places in the city. The servers were so kind and welcoming. The atmosphere was so great and the food was even better. Honestly, my only complaint was that they served us too much really good food and we went home in food comas, feeling like we were about to explode! They started us with complimentary bread and beans in a spicy oil which we mistakenly filled up on. We shared the mozzarella di buffala to start and it looked really simple but the flavours were amazing. I got the cacio e Pepe and my boyfriend got the pappardelle with wild mushrooms off the specials list. They were both so good. We also got wine and a chocolate cake. I will definitely be coming back here again.
The food was okay. They only take cash. And i didnt notice it until after i ate and my date pointed it out, but the entire kitchen had no masks on, wasnt washing their hands and kept touching their phones in between cooking. This was verified waiting for our check as the bar literally watches the kitchen
Oh. My. Goodness. BEST Italian Ive had in the city, period. I come from an Italian family, so my standards have been high when dining in this cuisine, and this blew them out of the water. The pasta was al dente to a level of perfection, the open flame dining experience was just beautiful. The lasagna, which my dining companion ordered, was INCREDIBLE. It came out so hot and fresh. The staff were so warm, kind and attentive. Ill be returning ASAP!
Can’t judge the food. We had a reservation for 2, they had us seat at the tiniest table ever, squeezed between two plastic walls, in the most crowded dark room imaginable. And of course it’s cash only. So we left before ordering anything. At least have the decency to give your customers a proper table, or just say you’re at capacity.
I’m a big fan of Supper, as well as all it’s sister restaurants. It’s just so good and always an awesome time. You can tell that Frank, the superstar chef that owns and runs these restaurants, has a deep passion for the food he serves. For example, Frank goes out of his way to source grass fed and raw milk burrata from a farm directly out of Puglia, Italy. He’s also a top notch dude. I’ve spoken to him once and you could tell how excited he gets just speaking about food.
Since our last visit, the prices have increased significantly, and seem a bit high for the serving size. The appetizer bread and bean/olive oil spread is wonderful. No matter which supper I choose, I have never been disappointed, ever. The food is fresh and served hot. Each time I have dined here a friend and I dont need to make one choice, we each order a meal then share both.Service is friendly and attentive. The private room is outstanding for large groups.
Very disappointed since Supper was highly recommended. The food was terrible from beginning to end. The polenta was absurdly salty from the mushroom sauce. The salmone marinato was a pile of dry basil leaves wrapped in thinly sliced, virtually flavorless salmon. The mozzarella bufala was another disappointment, with the tomatoes being massive, GMO & non-ripened tomatoes. The zucchini tagliatelle was the lowest point, we literally spat the food out. It was essentially flavorless zucchini seeping in lukewarm water with a sparse amount of almond bits. No taste of salt or garlic whatsoever. The worst school cafeteria would scoff at this dish. The homemade lemonade did not taste an ounce like lemons. It tasted like watered down ice tea water, with a bare essence of tea taste, like someone dunked a tea bag in it and immediately removed it. Being cash only isn’t a huge deal, but it’s certainly not convenient. The only positive was our server. He comped the zucchini and was very polite. We only glanced at the dessert menu, already ready to run out of the restaurant from the previous dishes, but the $10 vanilla pushed us out the door.
Mistaken for cutesy by the cartoonish menu, the real feel here is heartwarming and home-made. The shaved mushroom salad echoed of mom--those painstaking dishes she made that required such careful attention to detail, a struggle which you only realized when you became an adult and tried to imitate those recipes. The wonderful confluence of lemony acidity reservoirs within the crispy celery chunks wrapped in silky mushrooms and levied by enormous slices of thin parmesan. The grilled tuna was respectably fresh and seasonably spiced, resting on a bed of fresh pesto. The pasta in my friends bolognese was soft (not mushy), and marks of fennel influenced its subtle sauce. My only tip when visiting Supper may be to try to visit on a weekday so you can enjoy the care they take for each dish and avoid the rush. Cash only, but honestly take my cash and keep it.
We were seated directly in front of the host and it took 20 minutes to just get water- after we asked for it. I had to ask the bus boy to send a waiter over to take our order, who was unconcerned and said “sorry. It’s busy”. A restaurant as well known as Supper, which prides itself on great food, should be prepared to serve all their tables. After placing our order it took another 20 minutes to get our bottle of wine. Our waiter never came back to check on us, and after we finished our water it was never refilled. All in all worst experience I have had at any Frank owned restaurant.
A few friends went for dinner (pre Covid February 2020) and had a reservation. We arrived on time however, we were kept outside in the cold until our table was ready. Never received an apology for having to wait in the bitter temperature. Food was good but overpriced. Beware - this place only takes cash.
Very warm and lively atmosphere coupled with a delicious, traditional Italian menu and a deep wine selection make for an excellent dining experience. Whether youre a table of two or a table or twelve (we were the latter), its reliably great. In particular, try the lemon pasta or their daily rotation of risotto.
Food was great for the most part with some real winning dishes! The ambiance is awesome and despite how loud it is inside it still feels cozy and intimate. We had a large group and the service could have been better. It started off rocky but improved over dinner. Overall a pretty good dining experience!
While spending time with our daughter, she took us to Supper for dinner. We each ordered a different meal. Together we ate one dish at a time to experience all 3 dishes. I would recommend doing this since I loved all three dishes. Each one very different from the other. Food was amazing. Seating is tight and on our second visit we shared a large table with another group. That was not a problem for either party. I am not an experimental food consumer but, loved them all. My wife, whos heritage is mostly Sicilian, liked the dishes as well but, we cant compare to Sunday at Gradmas. (that would be sacrilegious). Our first visit we sat in view of the kitchen prep area and I was very impressed with the freshness of the food. Wait staff is what it is, smile and they will smile back. Yes, we will be returning.
This incredible meal started with the bread and white beans in olive oil they put on every table, a fabulous start. We had the buratta mozzarella and garlic bread as appetizers which were delicious. For dinner Veal Parmigiana and Veal Milanese, again both amazing. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
I went with my bf for dinner as we just loved to the neighborhood. Staff was not very friendly to us and I don’t want to assume why. We sat inside in the corner beside a furnace. We ordered food and it never came. Like ever. No one said anything and people that came after us received their food. 30 min later we decided to leave. The staff said nothing. It’s like we weren’t ever there. That was disappointing.
Awful service and extremely bland food. If youre going to be cash only and provide a group of 11 a single receipt thats impossible to read, you need to provide an excellent dining experience. Unfortunately, thats not what we experienced here. Not once did anybody ask us if we wanted anything else. My friend had to get up and refill her own water. The (unmarked - so stupid) bathroom paper towel dispenser was broken. And its really obnoxious to bring out our food and have absolutely no idea who ordered what.I had the Tuesday gnocchi and the veal meatballs and tried a couple of the other dishes (e g. chicken parmesan). If you go here (oh my God, why?), then get the meatballs, because everything else will leave you disappointed.
When we arrived at Supper restaurant in East Village we were greeted and immediately seated. This old-style restaurant with its mismatched table and chairs, vintage drapery and simple setting, is a perfect place to have a home cooked Italian meal. We ordered a bottle of Italian wine and chose our food off the specials menu. We ordered a Caesar salad, short rib tortellini and the pesto gnocchi.
Such a nice and lively place, got bar seating and watched the kitchen in action as they prepared plate after plate. Appreciated the mini show, hope the cooks get better ventilation tho because some of them were sweating. I got pappardelle (or some other flat pasta shape) with bolognese sauce. It was so great, so rich without feeling heavy. And for dessert a fantastic tiramisu. Staff was nice and the seating was clean. Would love to come here again and try out the chicken cutlet alla parmigiana. Those were the plates I saw flying out the kitchen.
A little disappointing this time. I remember the food being very good last time we went. Except for the excellent prociutto and melon appetizer and the excellent mozzarella with tomato and basil app, the other dishes were just ok. In particular, my chicken was dry and the meat was bland (the skin was delicious, though), and my husband ordered the priest strangler pasta, a specialty, and was unimpressed. The in-laws ordered more basics pasta dishes, and were happy enough, but I dont think we will go back. Its expensive for the quality.
I had never been in a restaurant with a huge mirror with the top tipped outward so you can see everything behind you! Fun! The service was great, and the food OMG. I am not a huge fan of Italian, because I think I know what it tastes like. No I did not. The veggie side dish of tomatoes and eggplant, was so bright I felt like I could hear it. The lemon pasta, when I returned home I attempted to make it, and although it wasnt as good, I think I have the idea. Also the the tiramisu, the creme/mascarpone ratio was different, with I believe more whipped creme than usual, and it was wonderful. How could it not be? There were 2 loud parties of people having a really good time, which made it seem even more fun, that plus our server who cheerfully put up with my machinations trying to pay the bill without our host noticing. That when I found out they dont take credit cards, but money always works.
The place has a good reputation from franks little franjs and supper the only thing I didnt like is you have in the menu short rib pasta I want rib on the bone with pasta not pasta with beef for that just say beef with pasta!!!! Is a bit over priced cause is cash only !
My favorite Italian spot in all of the city. I find myself craving their spaghetti a limone at random times of the day. I have gone out of my way just to eat here and love every minute of it. It’s a dark & cozy nook of East Village that’ll want you coming back for more. The food is amazing. I’ve never had a bad meal here. You must get the burrata—it is life changing.
Small and quaint. The kitchen runs like a machine pumping out fresh pasta dishes like Ive never seen before. I would highly recommend the lemone pasta and the smoked salmon roll with sea salt is fantastic. Very unassuming from the outside but tastes like youre eating at your Italian grandmothers house.
Amazingly fresh Italian food! Highly recommend -- but definitely come ON TIME (no more than 5 min late!) if you are hoping to honor a reservation. Our entire party did not show up right on time, so we had to wait over an hour to get seated... I understand that timeliness helps turn tables over more quickly.. but if one person out of a party of 6 is running 10 min late.. I was hoping wed get some slack.Nonetheless, I really loved the food and cannot wait to come back (with more punctual company)
My favorite restaurant in New York! When I come here I feel like family - lived in the East Village for 3 years and will travel from anywhere in the city for their spaghetti and chicken parm. The waitstaff is always so kind and knowledgeable - especially Davide who has been there forever! Tell him what youre in the mood for and hell choose the perfect dish! Cash only but honestly, its worth a quick trip to the ATM. Its a home away from home!
Dont get seated too close to the open kitchen as it gets insane during peak times. The best part of our meal was the mozzarella and tomato appetizer. The mozzarella was very fresh and creamy. The vegetarian entrées we ordered werent that great. The gnocchi with potato in pesto was a bit salty and the pasta in the Priest Stranglers was very undercooked.
Theyll try to make you sit at the bar even if you have a reservation and the place is pretty empty. If you want a table, keep asking and theyll take you to their back room -- prettier and more tables. My server was kind but he smelled like cigarettes and the service was ridiculously slow (on a Tuesday night). It took us 35+ minutes to get our food. My friend and I ordered the spaghetti al limon and the bolognese. They were both okay, just okay. We knew the place only accepts cash so that wasnt a problem. But they should really consider listing prices on one of their menus.
The atmosphere was great, great lighting and easy going music. The food was excellent and always came out at the right time, so nothing was ever cold and the table was never a mess. The portions were perfect my girlfriend and I ordered the burata, the priest stranglers with sausage, veal milanesa and the tiramisu and left the right kind of full. Not the bad kind where you need the bathroom and a nap. The only downside is its cash only but we made a reservation and were aware of this and obviously hit the atm beforehand.
Delicious!! Tasted like I was eating in Italy. Located in a sweet, quaint building with lots of charm. Service was spot on. I had the Kale Gnocchi and my mouth is still watering thinking about it, the mozzarella burrata should not be missed and the ragu is to die for. If you are looking for authentic Italian, this is the place. PS try the Tiramisu, you will not be disappointed.
Pluses: Amazing food; highly recommend the chicken parm and crostinis. The beans and bread is also incredible. Fairly affordable (for NYC). Great wine selection. Great service.Minus: We made a reservation for our anniversary, and due to low space and wanting to save bigger tables for others, I spent my anniversary sitting family style with four strangers. Its not an intimate experience when you can literally eat off your neighbors plate. For a walk in, Id get it, but not for a reservation.
Amazing pastas and crostinis. You can tell the vegetables and cheeses used are fresh and high quality. A little cramped and dark inside but its a bit cozy. Our waiter did an admirable job translating the menu for us and explaining all the different types of noodles, and he paid attention all night long. I dont think my water glass ever went empty but i barely ever noticed him refilling it.The weakest part was probably dessert, which was good, but not outstanding like the rest of the meal.Theres a number of great restaurant options in the area but if you want a reasonably priced, top notch date restaurant, this is it.
One of my absolute favorite neighborhood Italian restaurants. Delicious Italian comfort food, its cash only so come prepared. Most of the pastas are homemade. Very rustic atmosphere. Has a big enough space for birthday parties and at the same time feels very intimate. They also serve a great brunch with pasta and egg dishes. Delizioso! Al Dente!
We came for brunch on our last day before heading out of dodge. This was a great meal! The complimentary bread with white beans could easily be a meal itself. They are ridiculously good.Started with the black kale panzanella salad. Crisp black kale, fresh tomato, Sicilian capers and Tuscan bread. The flavor combination is fantastic. Since we were traveling, we decided to get a couple of pastas - the two specials were spot on. Slim handkerchiefs with pesto - sheets of pasta with a delicious pesto that wasn’t in the least bit oily. And the pappardelle with fresh peas. It was like summer in a bowl. The homemade fior di latte gelato fizzled with ages balsamic and the fresh fruit was the perfect ending. Great wine list, awesome service. Looking forward to visiting again on our next trip!
Never go to this restaurant.I was mislead by the (surprising) good reviews, and I ended up in the worst Italian restaurant Ive been to in my whole life.I ordered pasta with prosciutto (I think they mixed up prosciutto with bacon) and my plate was so disgusting I couldnt finish it.The most outrageous part is that I ended up with a $70 dollars bill + tip for this crap (that I couldnt pay by card! ...)Do yourself a favor and go eat somewhere else.
The food was really excellent and the service was kind, but the 2 star rating is a result of eating the chicken parm last night, and then spending the better part of this afternoon and this evening being sick in the bathroom. I wouldnt be so quick to point the finger here, but my friend and I who both had he chicken parm are currently in the same state, while my girlfriend and his wife had two pasta dishes and they are doing just fine. Go here if you want, just be wary of any meat dishes!
I love this group of restaurants (frank, lil Frankies, supper). The burrata is the best burrata Ive ever had. The pasta dishes are amazing. The tables are a little small, but it builds the cozy atmosphere. I usually try to make a reservation but you can usually do a walk-in as well.
My husband and I had them cater our wedding if that tells you how much I like this place. When I lived in the east village I ordered from here at least once a week. It’s my go to when I want really yummy Italian food. They are cash only, so make sure you come prepared!
Supper is one of the best restaurants you can find. The cacio e pepe is my favorite pasta dish in entire city. It’s made perfectly every time and I often think about how I would want it to be served at my wedding one day. The service is always excellent and they are especially accommodating and honest when it comes to dietary restrictions and what they can offer. You can expect a wait if you do not plan ahead and make reservations, but it’s definitely worth it. The wine and desserts (especially panna cotta) are also very good.
We went here for a friends birthday. We had a reservation for a large party, so they knew we were coming. Yet after two hours they said they needed to turn the tables and rushed us out (I should point out we were spending a lot of money and continuing to buy drinks through all courses). They pointed out we could go to their bar next door, but they didnt offer a round on the house for rushing us through the end of the meal. Even if the food was good, I wouldnt consider going back here because of the rude treatment.
Supper has amazing Italian food. I was able to fit 7 people here for a birthday party, without an advance reservation. Everyone had a really great time - I was especially impressed that they were able to create a unique dessert for the birthday guest, since they do not have any cakes in the restaurant. In terms of reservations, you need to arrive early and sign your name because they do not take reservations for parties under a certain number.
You know me, Im the value guy. I talk about it a lot, as its often on my mind. This was the case before the economy went in the toilet, but now its heard from a lot of people besides myself. So Ill get down to the crux: How much value do you get from risotto?Risotto is basically a glorified rice dish. Its creamy and delicious and not easy to make. And a good risotto can make the person eating it very happy. But its hard to feel like youre getting good value from your meal if youre spending in the neighborhood of twenty bucks for a rice dish.My suggestion, try to disassociate rice from risotto. Risotto takes a long time to cook and is special. Rice is rice. And when you come to Supper, get some risotto. They have a bunch of different varieties, including a risotto of the day. Ive not tried them all, though I would enjoy doing so.Related: It seems like they take pride in their tomatoes. This is important and not to be forgotten.
Saw the good reviews and the fact that it has an open kitchen, and was excited. However, it ended up being highly disappointing. We werent seated in the open kitchen dining room, but a dimly lit and crowded one. We started with the salsa cruda crostini and the bread was soggy, but the tomatoes were flavorful. The tomatoes were very large, however, so they seemed under prepared. We ordered that before we knew that bread is served, which would have been nice to know beforehand. We got the osso buco daily supper and silk handkerchiefs with pesto. The suppers dont have prices with them, which i guess should have been a red flag. Both dishes were missing a lot of flavor. The osso buco wasnt particularly tender, the risotto that came with it was considerably more than al dente, and the sauce tasted a bit burnt. The pesto pasta wasnt bad, but didnt stand out. We had planned to stay for dessert, but elected not to. All in all quite disappointing and lackluster on all fronts.
The food was very good (4 stars) but the service was absolutely terrible bringing my rating down. The waiter required 15 minutes to acknowledge our presence with a short welcome and a what do you want? We were a large table and the waiter was guaranteed 20% tip no matter how bad the service was that night. Usually restaraunts will require a 15% tip and you can add more which is fine by me but supper automatically adds 20% for a large group. There was no service to begin with. He never asked how the food was. Never stopped by to say anything other than what do you want. The most annoying part is that the the waiter wasnt busy. He ignored our table the entire meal by spending the evening fifteen feet from us socializing with what appeared to be regulars at the bar. Food was good but its frustrating when the service is non existent.
This place is too large and too busy to have amazing food. There is no way to serve that many people with a kitchen that small and pay the necessary attention to detail needed for a quality restaurant. Chicken was dry and overcooked. Couldnt eat it. They make them by the dozens.
Really great food but fairly expensive. The seafood risotto (Friday special) was $30ish. In the end, a party of 4 we paid around $225. Service was shaky at first when we tried to order liver pate for an appetizer, waiter told us everything had to be ordered at the same time. To our surprise the same waiter gave us a plate of live pate a few minutes later.... ON THE HOUSE. The service continued to pick up and our water cup was never empty :)
Everything from the meatballs in sugo to my amaro and espresso at dessert was executed fantastically. We had the cacio pepper amount other pasta entrees and were more than satisfied. My girlfriend and I have parents from south Italy who are fantastic cooks so we say none of this lightly. We cant wait to go back for more great italian cooking with a homey feel and of course amaro for dessert
This is one of the few bars I go to and dont order alcohol. I get the ice tea and pretty much anything on the menu taste good. Its a quaint place to put it excellent and impressive and I appreciate the service as well as the food quality and recipes they have. Definitely Order ahead if youre not going to eat here because the wait can be crazy.
Our party of five was led down long narrow stairs to a deep basement room, dimly lit and decorated with Catholic religious images. I loved it - very romantic, great place to take a date, I think. We found the service perfunctory -- no smiles but no disappearing act either. This I also liked. I ordered Perfection Carbonara as it was the special and receives freshly shaved (at the table) black truffles when served. The truffles must have been those Chinese cheapies, as they had no taste or aroma whatsoever. I even put one in my mouth separately to try and get a hint of the taste, and it was not there. Later I went online and learned that this Chinese fungus that looks like black truffles is making its way into American restaurants. That was a big disappointment, and the dish itself was good but not outstanding. We were out-of-towners and did not know this place is cash only. They really should mention this beyond the tiny printed notice on the menu. We folks from the provinces are used to paying everything with plastic. I had to run out and find an ATM, and the limit it would give me ($200) was not enough, so I had to use another card and get more money from a different machine, since I had emptied the first one I used. One machine I tried was out of order. I worked up a pretty good sweat by the time I got back to the restaurant and the little basement room where my party waited patiently. Prices at Supper are very reasonable, so they do get points for not trying to soak you.
I have to admit I was slightly disappointed with the experience. Went with a group of 5 people and we wound up paying $40 per person after ordering only entrees, a few appetizers and no drinks. The food was good, but not worth $40 per person - for that price I could get much better Italian food elsewhere in NYC.
Food was decent- unfortunately the service wasnt. Upon walking in this past Saturday evening, there was no hostess in the front. I walked up to a waitress at the bar and let her know that I was looking for my group of friends as I did not want to just walk into the back. Without even looking up at me, she told me I needed to go talk to the hostess in the front. I went back up to the front to the hostess station- surely there was no hostess. I went back to the waitress and informed her of this. She curtly told me I needed to go wait in the front for a hostess because that wasnt her job. I wouldnt ever consider coming back here as theres plenty of better dining in the area with better customer service.
Their iced coffee hits the mark, the rest of the brunch fare is so-so but its an amazing, accommodating location for big groups. We sat in the wine cellar and were able to DJ our own afternoon. It is a cozy spot and I will have to come back for Dinner perhaps, but the brunch food is nothing to die for.
Tasty food although a little pricey. Very good vibe. They have a back room which was great. Really good atmosphere the place was bustling. They only accept cash so be ready. For the specials they had an amazing caprese with burrata that I really recommend. That was my favorite by far.
Burrata MozzarellaOff the specials menu, an uncut ball of fresh mozzarella served on top of sliced tomatoes. The cheese is firm on the outside, rich, and creamy on the inside. As fresh as it gets.Veal Scallopine alla Parmigiana with SpaghettiThe tagliatelle will always be there, next time get a little more adventurous. I mean, when was the last time you ate veal scallopine anyway? Probably never. You won’t be disappointed.Tagliatelle al Ragu bologneseEh. I’d take Max’s bolognese over this one any day of the week. The pasta is good but there are a couple strong spices in the sauce that dominate the flavors and not in a good way.Spinach Gnocchi All Aglio D’OratoGotta love big fat pieces of fresh green gnocchi in tomato sauce. This gnocchi is all that and more. We could have easily taken down a whole other serving.
Menu choices were great. We had the famous main menu Ragu pasta dish, short rib stuffed pasta (special) with a light veal stock sauce and veal scallopine. The hit of the meal was the Burrata Mozzarella appetizer. The cheese was warn and soft in side over thick sliced beef steak tomatoes and basil. The complementary bread was served with a white bean garlic infused spread - awesome within itself. Wait staff outstanding. This place is now the go to Italian restaurant in the East Village.
So Ive been here many more times and its been consistently good. Lemon pasta is simple and good. For appetizers burrata was delicious as well as the crispy polenta. Ive also had the veal and that was decent as well. As for the pastas, my least favorite was the mushroom parpadelle, but none of the other pasta dishes disappoint, especially the tagliatelle in ragu. The most memorable part of this meal was the amazing coffee dessert! Im not a big sweets or dessert person, but I still dream about it!Also, the last time I came here we sat in the back room and it was really dark. Like we could barely see our menus. We used our phones to look at the menu and one friend was actually using his phone to look at the online menu cause it was so dark. I felt like we were in the haunted mansion in Disneyland or something.
Cozy Italian spot in the East Village. Its so popular youd be waiting quite awhile for a table. They will redirect you next door to the wine bar for a drink and to chill out. Its dim and romantic. The food at Supper is very good. they have some specialty items like lemon pasta and osso buco. Prices can get steep. Bring your cash.
Supper is the higher-end sister restaurant of Frank Prisinzanos Italian food empire. Cash-only, but so worth it. If you can, snag the seat at the bar to watch your food be prepared (great for dates).Frank is an increasingly popular brunch option, offering 3-for-1 drinks and spectacular food! If you havent been, it should be high on your list.I recommend the polenta with fennel and the strozzapreti!
Mothers and WivesLast night I had dinner at Supper. It was delicious and nice, and all the things an end-of-summer East-Village-Italian cash-only 6:30-dinner should be -Al fresco and paid for by my mother. It began with two salads starring summer tomatoes, “tomato salad” and “avocado salad.” The less you do to a tomato at this time of year the better, and Supper displayed the restraint one might hope for. Salad 1: A drizzle of oil and drop of balsamic, salt, pepper, fresh basil, all made for that delightful moment when you mind’s fantasy matches reality. The avocado salad, an exercise in deconstruction, exceeded. The well ripened slices of avocado, deep red perspiring tomato slices, a golden pile of fleetingly seasoned sweet corn, and some crunchy shavings of pale romaine, were presented as elements to be ratioed and consumed. A fennel salad accompanied but failed to achieve the almost-transcendence of its salad course mates, at least for me. My wife, with whom I shared a chicken parm and spaghetti- quite good-, and my mother, spaghetti limone (did not taste but is her Supper go to for whatever that’s worth), raved about it, exclaiming “I just love fennel, don’t you?” to which I answered silently. No.All was well in the land of Supper, until I asked for a re-up on the bread so that I could sop up my chicken parm plate trails. I was throw into a quiet despair when- instead of the crusty fluffy Filone which inhabited the first bread basket- I found myself staring at some rather unattractive poorly sliced pieces of baguette, whose relative staleness would not relent even after coming into contact with the oily reddish streams of flavor left over from the chicken parm. After a brief moment of panic- where I thought my tote, “has been lost forever!”- that was mercifully relieved when I discovered it hiding beneath my mother’s sweater on the back of her chair, the meal took a turn for the better when we ordered 2 espressos, “none for me Daniel, I’ll be up all night” and a slice of tiramisu. The tiramisu, a presence across Frank Prisinzano’s East Village empire, is a brush with consistent perfection. Each bite of this ethereal cloud of sugar cream, espresso, cake, and cocoa powder is of the great pleasure, no matter how full one might be. It is a bite I would not forgo even if a real or perceived, lactose intolerance would inevitably force me to pay the porcelain price. Upsetting, but not devastating, was the delayed arrival of our espressos until after the Tiramisu had been ravaged, my wife lacking the self-control to wait until the coffee had arrived, triggered another panic where I was convinced that if I hesitated to consume even for a moment, I would be left with a crumb of cream and cocoa dust to which she would direct my attention and proclaim that in a true act of altruism she had saved the last bite for me. Panics and the mediocre service aside, the meal was more than fine, with nice flavors and company and atmosphere, Supper is a consistently good meal for anyone who carries cash and enjoys the interpretation of American Italian cuisine through fresh ingredients, and a minimalist touch.
Good food, horrible service. Hostess could not seem less interested in her job. Took 4 people 5 min to clear 1 table. Waiters seemed annoyed by questions and requests for more drinks. We sat down to filthy silverware (as in chunks of food, not just water spots - how can you miss that?). I would give 0 stars if my brunch wasnt so damn good (polenta and poached eggs). Others got the blt (8), pancakes (7 because there should be 3in the order), two eggs (7). Overall not a bad brunch, but front house staff could really hold place back.

2022-03-03I lived in NYC when Supper opened nearly 20 years ago, and it became a favorite back then. The neighborhood was very different, but this restaurant has survived. That does not surprise me, because their food is simple, yet delicious. The prices are higher today, of course, but my go-to dish is still on the (Specials) menu--the Veal Milanese--and it is worth every penny. I remember when it was on the original menu, and it read something like served with a nice little salad, and it still is. The veal is lightly breaded, quickly fried in butter in a pan on the stove (I sat at the bar and watched them make it). It is plated next to the salad, which is indeed simple but a perfect accompaniment, along with half a lemon to squeeze over everything. Its fun to do, and I tend to use every drop. This dish could be a last meal dish for me, I love it that much, even well over a decade since I first had it. Also see the photo of the bread with the white beans in oil. Not enough places start with a thoughtful complimentary starter (or anything complementary at all), but they do. And its tasty. As long as Supper is still around, its worth me trekking there whenever I visit New York. And one other thing to mention, considering so many places have gone to card-only, this place has stuck to the CASH ONLY format (they have their own ATM in the back).

2022-08-18Our meal was pretty good, but not outstanding. Best part was the ginger bourbon cocktail and the complementary bread with white beans in olive oil. My veal Milanese was kind of plain, and the salad that it came with was very sharp and bitter. Chicken Parmesan was relatively good. Both meat cutlets were extremely thin, almost too thin (never thought I’d say that). Even though I was not blown away, the meal was still pretty good, and I would eat here again to explore their pasta options.

2022-05-27Supper is a really cute northern Italian restaurant. They’re known for their lemon pasta and chicken parm. The staff are super friendly. It’s a big restaurant that can host large parties and has outdoor seating. Make sure to bring lots of cash because it’s cash only, they have an atm in the back too. It’s kind of on the pricey side for Italian food and drinks but still yummy and a good time.

2022-01-16What an amazing experience. Starting with the staff. Everyone is lovely, warm, hospitable. Service is 10/10 - unmatched. Turns out they are more than just coworkers, most of the staff has been here >10 years and are truly a family. Onto the food. Delicious. So good. The pasta tasted so fresh and was seasoned perfectly. Great wine menu and lovely ambiance. Overall wonderful night. Would highly recommend!!

2022-01-01The best fresh pasta and burrata we’ve ever had. The food is exceptionally good- but one of my favorite things is everything is perfectly seasoned, we didn’t have to ask for salt or cheese. The wine we ordered was delicious, interesting, and reasonably priced. We ordered the burrata skeptically, at $30. Amazingly, IT WAS WORTH IT. Very good service too. We’ll be back.

2022-02-16After a long day on being in Central Park, a few of my friends and I was looking for a spot near one of my friends house to have a nice outdoor dinner, one of my friends make the recommendation of Super because he was there not too long ago and mention that food was delicious and had great service. We arrived at the restaurant went the kitchen was almost closing we thought they were not going to sit us but they did which was a nice gesture of then.Super is a restaurant that is based on Italian food, which has a great variety on their menu; you can scan the menu using your phone is pretty cool to do it.I order the chicken Parmesan. The Chicken Parmesan is a fried breaded chicken breast topped with marinara sauce and melted cheese, and with spaghetti pasta. The dish was super delicious adding cheeses give that Italian touch the chicken was super juicy and crunchy, the pasta had a great taste and the portion was super big.The services were great they did not rush us, not even because they were almost closing, they were fast and super attentive. The only bad thing about the place that is cash only, but they have an ATM inside.

2022-04-01Good Italian restaurant with good flavor.Had a lot of Italian food around town and this place to me is personally better some popular a little more upscale places like Olio di Piu.Food - for the bolognese and lemon pasta. Both had good flavor and devoured. Their serving bread with beans is unique and pretty good as well.Service - our server was so nice which made the dining experience that much betterPrice - a little pricy for what you get. Average portion and the lemon pasta is just a lemon pasta but it’s almost $30. Expect to pay around $30 per person just for a dish.Vibe - good vibe in the back. There’s outdoor seating, bar seating, front seating, patio seating, and back room seating. We sat in the back which had the best vibe.Cleanliness - average. It didn’t feel too clean as it was dark and people have to pass the serving section/kitchen hub when passing in and out the front - back. Water was already served on the table which I didn’t like. I like being served water after being seated. Took half a star off for this. But rounded it up to 5 because the server was so great.

2022-08-03Went again 4 more times. Wonderful each time. Best pasta and mussels in town. 3-2-2022 UPDATE: ONCE AGAIN SIMPLY THE BEST. MUSSELS IN GREAT TOMATO SAUCE, TOASTED BREAD WITH WHOLE GARLICS ROASTED ON TOP, BEST PASTA AND TOMATO SAUCE WE HAVE EVER HAD AND FUN CHOCOLATE SUNDAY (SEE VIDEO ATTACHED). ALWAYS WONDERFUL --- WOW One of the best Italian meals we have had since being in Italy. The pasta is fantastic. Firm and the tomato sauce is very bright and yummy. We highly recommend the Pomodoro E Basitico sauce and be sure to get it with the Stracciatella Mozzarella on top. This is an excellent combination of flavors. We like a thicker pasta so we substituted in the pasta from the Priest Stranglers dish instead of spaghetti noodles. The noodles from the Priest Stranglers are long thick tubes about 4 inches each and they are a great texture with lots of pasta flavor. That was a great choice. All pasta is made fresh daily. We sat in a booth back by the kitchen and could see how it is all made and set up to be served. They have a great attention to detail and it came out perfect. For apps we had the buffalo cheese and tomatoes which was very creamy and good. Also had the bread with cooked garlic on it. Very good. We had an order of clams as well which was awesome. Be sure to use your bread to dip in the clam drippings. One of the best flavors you will find. Desserts are all homemade. We were so full we had to spilt a chocolate hazelnut panna cotta. They served it with drizzled chocolate. Super Yummy. This place has no sign so be sure you know the address. You need to email them to get a reservation and it is CASH ONLY. This is a spectacular place, loud and lots of fun. It has our highest recommendation. UPDATE ON 9-30 SATURDAY BRUNCH WAS AWESOME. BEST PANCAKES WE HAVE EVER HAD, THIN BUT CRUNCH AND SWEET. VERY GOOD MAPLE SYRUP AS WELL. WE HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THE BEST PANCAKES IN NYC AND THIS IS #1 FOR SURE!!!! Check out all of our reviews. 2022-05-06This place went above and beyond every expectation. The staff are incredibly friendly. Food is exceptional by being minimal and delicious, just what you would expect from grandmas house.
