Cozy, simple, with great food and a pleasant dining experience.Old Japanese posters line the walls and quirky art decorates the space, even making it onto the lantern lights. This gives of a warm feeling of home.Dining while trains rattle by outside complete a Japanese diner aesthetic. The sushi is great. The ramen is probably the only ramen Ive ever had with seared sashimi as an option over seared pork. The whole ramen and sushi set is less than just a bowl of ramen in many places in the city.Happy hour gets you two fried chicken drumsticks with a drink order. And the fried chicken is great. To make it all better everything is served politely and enthusiastically. What a great find.
I always pass by this place. For the first time, I tried it. I ordered the food, it was very disappointing. The food was nasty, the sauce smelled very bad and we couldn’t eat the food. As for the price, it was very very expensive and when I called to let them know, the lady was very rude. I preferred to talk to her to let her know instead of writing a bad review and she hung up on me several times so now I decided to write this review. I don’t recommend anyone to go to this place.
I just flew in for work and was walking around looking for somewhere to eat.Suzuki Shokudo was busy and always a sign. The salad given at the start is fresh, crispy, and fabulous ginger dressing.Ordered the ramen and sushi, what a fantastic combination.Sushi 🍣 was fresh and fabulous cleaned my pallet with the pickled ginger slices and onto the Ramen. The ramen 🍜 was hot tasty, and before I knew it, it was all gone.It is highly recommended.
Went here for dinner on a late Wednesday night. No wait, but resto was pretty full. We had the gyoza, grilled octopus, salad, and miso soup to start. Then the dragon roll and the ramen sushi combo. The sushi was good, preferred it over the ramen. Wed probably go with the all sushi entree option next time. The combo was a reasonable price for dinner ($14.75), but I see myself enjoying this place way more as a lunch spot. Try it out. I dont think its out of this world, but a convenient and reasonably priced spot for LIC folks.
I am so happy to have found this authentic Japanese restaurant!! I almost felt like I was in Japan, just like my home town. Everyone who work there are so friendly and the service is wonderful. The bento box and sushi everything I’ve had were very fresh and delicious. I can’t wait to go back to try other foods on the menu. Highly recommend!!
Modest, authentically Japanese, FRESH, well curated variety of menu, and absolutely delicious! Talk about a truly local gem to good measure! In the city limits, while, still, brilliantly tucked away in Astoria, ever so, from all the hustle and bustle of Astoria itself, and especially Manhattan. Totally understand why so many local reviews love this excellent mom & pop shop so much. Wonderful! Bravo! I shall return!
A very nice old Japanese couple runs this restaurant. Popular among Astoria locals. Simple menu. Sushi and ramen. Reasonable price. Very clean. You can call me a racist but nowadays any nationality can make sushi and I still prefer sushi made by someone who spent some years training in Tokyo. I will definitely go back there again.
Really nice Japanese restaurant. I went with my wife yesterday and got the Chef’s omakase chirashi and my wife got a tempura entree. Both were very good. The fish in my chirashi were all really nice. The tempura also was very good. Portions were very generous and I was quite full well into the night.Another fun thing was that the staff heard my wife and I speak Japanese and the staff also started speaking to us in Japanese. At one point the chef came out and started talking about the different fish in the chirashi I ordered. Will definitely go again.
This is my go-to lunch spot when Im at work. Their lunch special is amazing! The ramen is so light yet flavorful. I love the fact that you can get seared tuna ramen! The grilled squid is superb. The staff is so friendly and remembers me every time I come in. Definitely going to continue frequenting them!
Good place. Service was great, sushi is above average, and ramen is average to meh. The ramen is the only reason I didnt give it a 5/5. The noodles and broth were lacking salt and flavor. I had to jazz mine up with a lot of soy sauce and chili oil to make it good. This place is a great value and I will definitely be returning here as my local sushi spot.
Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had - the quality was up there with omakase that I’ve paid $150-200 pp for. I kept thinking about the price tag ($35 for 10pc omakase) and saying “this is crazy, how is this sushi so good?” It felt like I was back in Japan. Every single piece was incredibly tender. I’m on the verge of tears (of joy) just remembering this meal. I will come back and back and back again until they’re tired of me!Other notes: Staff were really nice. Apps and dessert were on point. Also tried the Ikezo sake which was maybe the most fun I’ve had opening a drink ever.
Have traveled to this area the last 8 and a half years on and off for work. Over that time I have tried countless places to eat within a 10 block radius or more of where the hotel I stay at is. This is not only my favorite, but IMHO the best place Ive eaten. As of this review writing, i agree 100% with some of the other reviews in that their lunch / dinner deal are super affordable, especially when taking into account the area and proximity to NYC. They have a Ramen + sushi roll deal that is super filling at the price, alot of options within the deal to mix and match to choose from, and is delicous. You also get a small salad as well. Ramen they do there is top notch. Always get mine veggie. ATM I believe it is around 13 bucks during dinner and 11.50? During lunch. To put a full meal at this price in perspective to the area, if you walk across the street to the convience store and buy an 8 oz red bull its $4.00. Thats closer to what static price is for the area. So again the 13 bucks is a bargain and an even bigger bargain when you take into account how delicious the food is. The staff here is SUPER FRIENDLY. You get greated immediately with excited positivity when you walk in, and happy thank yous when you leave, as if EVERYONE on the staff was glad you came, and, really appreciate you coming into the establishment to eat. Just a super place to catch a meal. Place itself is small, casual and i like the intamite feel of it. Really has Authentic Japanese style food and atmosphere at a great price that cant be beat. Highly recommended!
Definitely among the best sushi Ive had in the States. The wait for our food was a little long, but it was worth it. I got the omakase sushi/sashimi combo and had expected to order a few more pieces a la carte, but as it turned out the chef provided a very filling spread. Going for the omakase option is a little pricey, but worth it if youre a sushi lover!
As a sushi lover, I am so happy this place just opened. I moved to the LIC/Astoria area from Park Slope, where quality sushi was easy to find. Until Suzuki, I have been disappointed with the Japanese food in the area. This place is delicious, fresh, authentic and has a great atmosphere too. Big fan. Will be eating there regularly.
Great local atmosphere with delicious home style cooking at very reasonable prices. This is a place where my Japanese friends call home and they come here at least once or twice weekly. Husband is the chef (see attached pic) and his wife manages the front of the house.
Small place and I totally didnt expect the food to be as good as it was! Nice ramen and well done, simple sushi and the owners are actually Japanese! But dont just focus on the sushi. They have some cooked specials (rotating) that I really like - such as beef curry and stir fry dishes. Prices are also incredibly affordable for a sushi place. So reasonable in fact that its usually an easy decision to get a piece of fatty tuna nigiri.All-in-all this place is simple and honest. Its not meant to be haute cuisine or comparable to Masa. But if you want an enjoyable, healthy, and authentic Japanese meal, come here
Great price if you come for lunch bento with sushi and teriyaki. Don’t get the noodle it is not the regular. The sushi is not wrap well neither.Oh and sometimes they offer daily special. I would say some special is quite good. Last but not least, I love their miso soup.
I am so sad! A friend suggested this place to me. I grabbed pork ramen+ sushi combo for takeout, and i must say- it was nearly inedible:(The broth for the ramen tasted like soap. It looked like water and soy sauce mixed together. It was so incredibly salty- I couldn’t eat it. The noodles were more like pasta noodles than anything. The pork was bone dry.The bamboo shoots tasted canned and like they were turning.Sushi was not horrid- but was not super fresh or tasty. The service was SO LOVELY though! And it’s a shame because I wish the food were better! I was hoping to make this my local go to :(
I thought the sushi was quite good but the ramen was a major disappointment. The noodles were either very low quality or seriously over cooked. However, I appreciated the friendly service and nice decor. I would not make a special effort to go here again, but I might go if I were in the area.
My family and I were dining and ordered entrees and a pitcher of beer. When we were done eating we were still finishing the beer and we were asked to leave so they could use the table. It was very awkward and quite rude. We kindly agreed and chugged the beers. As we were walking out the door she was right up on my tail pushing us out the door saying happy new year. We all won’t be back. Ever.
MAKING GOOD FOOD AND MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY...I love the friendly, warm welcome and delicious food every time I visit for lunch or dinner at the bar...the seafood and draft beer are always fresh...and a great happy hour too. My first choice for local Japanese food and hospitality.
On a scale of 1-10 how upset would you be if when you were eating your meal and toward the end of it the waitress or owner comes to your table and says can you please finish up we need the table.... WHAT A BUZZ KILL to our evening. We were still drinking our beverages! How do you have the NERVE to say that to paying customers? Thats just shows you that all this business cares about is youre money. Eat, pay and leave. We will NEVER be back. Plenty of other Japanese restaurants to eat at in NYC.
Mr. Suzuki is a pioneer of Japanese restaurant in New York. He was a chef at Edo Garden restaurant in early 70s and later established his own restaurant called Shabu Shabu 70 in Manhattan featuring Shabu Shabu and Sushi. He now came to hip LIC with Sushi and Ramen!! You can be sure you areenjoying a authentic Japanese cuisine. I am one of his fans for a long time!!
It’s like a local restaurant in Japan. It really looks like a Japanese neighborhood restaurant. It is run by an elderly couple, and they are friendly and have a variety of menus. It is not a restaurant worthy of Michelin or other food reviews. There are also menus that use commercially available products as they are.The line for a restaurant in Japan is too long and annoying to find, so it seems like a local restaurant that I accidentally stopped by.I really enjoyed the meal.

2021-09-13I love their reservation system by Google Duplex. Also the price for the food was very reasonable for such portion. Convenience location right next to the subway station. Sushi was good! Ramen broth was lack of umami.

2022-05-16In a word delicious!! My first time eating here but definitely not my last. Just moved in across the street from Suzuki Shokudo and so happy to have their food at my disposal so conveniently. Excellent service from the dining room attendants, super speedy food out of the kitchen and sushi bar and a very nice conversation with Chef Suzuki! Oh yes and also very fairly priced with excellent quality. Without question my new go to spot!!

2021-10-22Tried out this place as it had great reviews. The food was pretty solid. Not amazing but still above/average good. The sushi was fresh and tasty. Also had some karaage, tempura, and ramen which was all pretty decent. Was worth a try. Would come again to try different things. A good number of Japanese people eat here and to me, that must mean the food must be pretty solid haha

2020-12-22Excellent! Its always the places that are hidden that are the gems! This place is in a corner storefront, next to an auto body shop, under an elevated N train track in a part of Queens that I grew up knowing only as an industrial hub. Dishes are designed with care and the wait staff is usually quite helpful when it comes to pairing particular kinds of sake, shochu or wine with your order. I mean, the freshest fish and vegetables one could imagine, a fried chicken appetizer that always tastes clean and never greasy and even the garnishes are arranged with care. Look at what the chest did for my sons birthday with that fruit platter and the bear shaped orange peel! Im no chef, I just like to eat the food so Im giving this chef a diners kiss: mwah!

2022-04-26The best vegetable ramen I’ve ever had is here to stay! Stay with me my ramen! I’ve yet to try other ramens. The house salad with ginger dressing was awesome. Sushi plate was incredible too. That homemade ginger dressing has dressed me up! We loved this sushi place! Will come back for more! Highly recommended! 🙂👍

2021-03-25Excellent customer service. Excellent food. Great environment. Im not a Japanese so I asked few questions before I ate and they were so helpful. Adviced me on what to eat based on my questions. The old lady working there was very nice and rest of the staff were super friendly.

2022-05-07Very reasonably priced little sushi spot, felt very authentic, local, and similar to the spots I ate at in Japan. Good variety of sushi opions, but only one ramen option (for a place that has ramen in the name, I find that odd) I did try the ramen though, and for a simple chicken broth ramen it was quite good. Keep in mind that if you only love thick, salty, pork broth ramen then this will obviously not be the ramen for you. It tasted light and fresh with great flavor and had thinner noodles. My friend got a 3 set of all spicy sushi rolls and really enjoyed it.
