So wonderful to have this special bookstore in our neighborhood. Great selection and staff! It is the perfect place to find a Babel book, a best seller, a gift for a child etc. Talking Leaves has beautiful calendars and a unique collection of cards for all occasions. It is a favorite place to shop in the Elmwood village.
Ive written this 5-star review because I couldnt make it 6 stars. I ordered online and the processing company pulled the funds from my bank. This was despite my statement, please do not use the card if the gift card number doesnt work. During this time, Im on a limited budget. I called frantic and upset because I had been clear not to use the card.I was half-way into leaving a message when someone answered the phone. Ive never heard a more eager and empathetic voice. She explained the error; I soon realized it was a hold not a charge. Why it was not on the hold section of my bank account, I did not know. Anyways, to appease the problem, she assured me she would process the order next.I dont believe that great businesses never make mistakes. Great businesses know when they make a mistake. Then, they do their best to care for and fix the problem.
I was recently here to attend a book signing for a book that was newly released by a local Author Amber Smith, her new book is called - Somthing like gravity- she has been able to host a few other book signings at this local book store and the owner and all the attendees are very nice and welcoming! I will definitely be back and will recommend this store to everyone.
Good bookstore. I went looking for something specific and i had to ask for help finding it. I did end up finding it and there was only one type of that book in the store in general. At first I was a tad bummed at lack of selection and wishing for more, but I started reading through it and it was exactly what I was looking for; it was a really good book. I bought that book and another really cool one that I found. Its a small store but they do have really good books! I will be back (also it helps that the coffee shop attached next door serves delicious pastries)
A splendid and truly endangered species, stepping into this store is like going back in time before people couldnt function without a smart phone in their hand or asking Alexa to do their bidding. Other reviewers have pointed out the finely curated selection which I cannot agree with more. Its fantastic to see the efforts of human minds determining what fills these shelves rather than algorithms hellbent on sales alone. .
In an era of Amazon discounts and used bookstores, Talking Leaves seems to exist by tugging the heartstrings of only a handful devotees and the wayward tourist willing (read: privileged) to pay full price (for titles conveniently available elsewhere for 30%-50% off).Being in a very small space they are extremely physically limited with what they can offer, offering titles which dont seem essential but the revolving door of bestsellers and pretty cookbooks. For a fee, you can save on tax (10%), but instead you can discover a great selection at Rust Belt Books, Second Reader, and West Side Stories.
I was offended that I needed to take off my (small) backpack in the bookshop. You guys arent selling diamond rings here.... none of the other places on Elmwood require such a thing. Not 7-11, or the Co-op, the boutique shopping stores, or anywhere else that I frequent. Be more welcoming to the community that surrounds you. Also, the books are poorly arranged and browsing is nearly impossible.
HORRIBLE COMMUNICATIONS . Since no feed back ever, verbal or written, I wonder if written contracts with author are honored. Still waiting after last telephone call 2 weeks ago. All copies of my book sold out at both store locations many months ago , yet have never received any money for these sales or even acknowledgement of book status. Advise new authors to steer clear of this place. This is total antithesis of such High quality places like the Burchfield - Penny Art Museum gift shop where my book BIPOLAR BUFFALO- a Mosaic of Minds Journey continues to be offered with integrity & professionalism.
They discriminate racially when it comes to enforcing their bag check policy. The clerk asked my daughter to check her bag, but failed to ask white customers to do so. A white customer noticed, pointed out to my daughter that she wasnt asked to check her bag, and then confronted the clerk about the discrimination. Theyre one of the things keeping America from being great.
If youre a reader, or someone you know is, you MUST shop at Talking Leaves. Not just because their local and its the smart and responsible thing to do, but theyre VERY helpful and knowledgeable, support the WNY community and have a tremendous selection. Talking Leaves is a Buffalo treasure!!
Talking Leaves is a WONDERFUL independent bookseller: a business well worth supporting. If they dont have it in-house, in the moment, they can order it for you lickety-split. They are a helpful, well-read crew! Lots of parking on Bidwell, if you need it...or a bike rack.

2022-06-16This is a great little local bookshop. They have a good selection that runs a wide gamut of subjects. I usually go to find books on math to give as awards to my students. While this location isnt as large as the old Main Street location, its still an enjoyable shopping experience.

2022-07-11Update: the little bookstore that could (and did) get me through the worst of the last two pandemic years: huge thank you!I love this little, local bookstore. They don’t always have what I want in stock, but can get whatever I need post haste. The staff is friendly, and the prices are the same or just about comprable to amazon.I picked up my most recent order today, and depending on how long this pandemic lasts, they’ll continue to be my go-to source of entertainment :)

2022-04-05Such a fantastic bookstore. I moved from a place that didnt even have a chain bookstore, and to find one that is local, inclusive, and well-stocked is just mindblowing.

2019-09-10Best independent bookstore in Buffalo New York. Welcoming, quiet, quaint and very Perfect. Staff is friendly, professional and assisted me with research. Children, patrons and local artist visited, in and out and the door is not only revolving but always open. Additionally, the books are perfectly categorized, alphabetized and organized. If you are in need of a physical book, an array of genres, magazines, book flair and overall possess. This is definitely the place #PerfectBookstore

2021-05-20Wonderful independent book store. Stacked with books, both popular titles and some hidden gems. Staff has always been helpful, in person, by email and on the phone. They provided exemplary service during COVID, helping us get the books we wanted to make our daughters Christmas and birthday special, while making sure their customers and staff were as safe as possible. They make it a pleasure to shop local!

2021-09-12A beloved Buffalo institution. Great service and a cozy setting. They can order any book that is not on the shelves already and are happy to do so. Weve been customers for many years and will continue to be.

2020-12-01Buffalos best bookshop! Its a joy and an experience to shop here. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful without being pushy or judgmental. They are always happy to order books that are not in stock and have a really great selection of books in stock in all sorts of genres. I have been shopping here for almost 20 years!
