I came to this same place in 2017, nice experience and attention. Today I came again happy, but I got the bad surprise that the person who attended me was very unpleasant, without any interest in helping, and to overflow the glass, he tried to swindle me with 50 dollars in change, he was very nervous since I confronted him and he didnt know what to tell me... I got a terrible experience this time. I hope foreigners have an eye when they come to this store.
Was my first visit to Tannen’s. I was looking for magic tricks as a Christmas gift for a young magician. Im a neophyte when it comes to magic. The service provided was super. Suggestions and explanations and demos of magic tricks based on my description of the magic tricks I have seen this person do. I was completely satisfied with the advice and kindness of the gentleman who assisted me. Walked out and cant wait to see this friend execute these tricks during the holidays!
I just received my Tannens Mystery Box today and I can’t be happier. It is well worth the $35 price tag. I’ve ordered several things from Tannens and I’m always completely satisfied with both price and delivery time. Thank you so much Tannens, you have a lifelong customer here. I look forward to visiting the shop in person on my next trip to NY.
Went for the after hours magic show. Would have been more fun if I could have seen the show. Not sure if Id recommend. Three rows is too far for tricks that are done at a non elevated table. Debated buying these tickets for months and now I wish I didnt. :(Edit: They did reach out to try and revise our experience. It didnt work out but I really appreciated the effort and would try to go back.
Tannen’s magic shop in New York City is legendary and historic - an exquisitely curated dream palace that takes many of us back to our childhoods! I love to visit and experience glittering curio cabinets and wall upon wall filled with mysterious discoveries. Besides the fact that this is a gorgeous store, they are known for carrying exclusive & unique props & manuscripts that you won’t find anywhere else.A special big **thank you** to LEE at the shop, who yesterday took time via Zoom to personally help me with a question about something unique I purchased recently. I never felt rushed, he was endlessly patient, and all my questions were answered. Now THAT is how service is done, and you’ve earned my continued business!Tannen’s is a just very special place - a Willy Wonka throwback to a time when magic was real, and a classy mystery store could ignite dreams that anything is possible.
I absolutely love this store. This was the first magic shop I ever had the opportunity to go to, and Im so glad it was Tannens. These guys know their stuff and are able to make all kinds of recommendations based on what you like to do. The prices are pretty competitive, although I will admit some things may be cheaper online. HOWEVER, be that as it may, by going in person you get to actually talk to someone and make sure its something you truly want before purchasing. On top of that they can help you with your routines while you are there and you can just talk and jam with the employees and other magicians. If you are new to magic, they have plenty of beginner based things to get you started and they are more than willing to help you out. I would highly recommend going here if you are even remotely interested in magic.
If youve always found magic amazing youll love this place! Its the oldest magic shop in New York. you can imagine the history in this place. They are welcoming and very helpful. They have summer camps for young magicians which maybe something your child would be interested in doing. Its worth a visit to see how magicians come to be great at their craft!
Saw the After Hours magic show and it was very disappointing. I like the idea of an intimate magic show with the magician right in front of you instead of on a stage. But there were just too many people packed into the small shop. The early tricks were good, but the entire second half switched to a low table, and because we were in the back, it was very difficult to see. For the price of the ticket, I at least expected to be able to see what card was turned over at the end of a trick, rather than having to rely on the reactions of the people in the front.
Novice at magic but they really welcomed me in the shop. There was a group of experienced customers all showing each other tricks and then two workers willing to show off tricks or explain any of the many items in the store. This is the best magic shop environment Ive been in with a great selection.
Excellent customer service and the staff demonstrates, with theatrics, all of that magic gear for anyone who comes into the store, basically constant free magic shows.Much of the store is taken up by a huge very interesting exhibit of Houdini relics. If your kid is interested in magic, this place will fill them with wonder. Its in the upper floors of a older midtown office building, back in the maze of the hallways, so even the location has an Old New York magical quality.
The magic after hours show by Nick was absolutely amazing. He provided a history of magic while performing his show and made it very interactive with the guests. Its an intimate show with very limited ticket availability so you get up close with the magic and truly feel a part of the show. As a college student, I have to take budgeting very seriously... Im SO glad I took a chance on this show and you can bet Ill be saving to do it every time I visit the city!
I saw the after hours magic show here and it was great. The are always a few magicians jamming out taking real magic. Its wonderful if youre just starting out, but even better if youre really into magic. They stick wonderful books and props here. Noahs show was super tight. Its a magical landmark, and its still going strong!
Helpful service if youre a magic person (my friend) but if your not good luck. I was talked down too & made to feel like an outsider. Hint, if you want to keep magic from dying completely be a little more open to newbies. They do have lots of books! Cool history, my friend enjoyed it, me not so much.
How can there be a better magic store than this?I know we all buy online, but there’s no substitute for the real thing. If you’re in the city or passing through, you owe it to yourself to stop in and pick up something fun.Great selections of books and cards. Staff knows literally everything about everything.
Ok this is funny. Magic (the gentleman) is so good at magic that I thought he was lying about the actual product. I think he got offended but I swear it was a compliment. I get it, it came off as offensive, but best magic I have ever seen in person. I started sweating. I was freaking out. Such a cool place, he was such a great help! I wanted less serious magic tricks for a beginner. He knew exactly what to show me. AMAZING. Highly recommend this place.
Although its a hole in the wall, they know magic, the employees were very friendly and more than happy to exchange tricks with me. It was good to have a good talk with people who work in the industry and they really know what every kind of magician needs. I got my very first legitimate set of cups and balls there, and I simply cannot wait until I return. If youre a magician (whether hobbyist or professional) and youre in NYC, this place is a MUST VISIT.
One cannot go by the title of magician without visiting this iconic shoppe. The staff is knowledgeable and courteous, and you can always find other magicians hanging out and sharing magic. Great for magicans of all levels and even those who have never ventured into the art of magic.
Great magic store catering to professional magicians. Lots of illusions available. However if you have younger budding magicians youd be better to chose Fantasma on 35th street. They have many more tricks for younger people and are very patient teaching how to perform them.
Terrible service. The products are the same you can find in any magic shop but here are overpriced. But the worst thing is the service. The guy that was with me was a young kind amateur magician, but he didnt know when you asked for specific magic tricks and all the time he had to ask the man in change who was ignoring him and the customers as well. The manager was all the time making card flourishes and talking with a friend of him in the center table and didnt want to be bothered with silly questions or help providing a good service to any customers or give advice or support. Because of his attitude I think Tannen only have history, but not any special products, is overpriced and they dont have any good customer service. I recommend that you buy on shops like penguin, alakazam, ellusionist, etc before losing your money and patience at Tannens. Even tricks I watch in advanced on Tannens website and I asked for were not available (but the website showed it were available), and the manager said. Yeah, the website is not updated, but we dont care. Buy what you see in the shelves...As a professional magician I definitely I wont come back or recommend this place to anyone Its a shame !!!
Tannens is the best magic shop I have ever been too. As we walked in the kind gentleman, Magick welcomed us. He asked me what sort of magic I liked and what sort I perform (as I am a magician). He then showed me all of these amazing tricks that would suit my repertoire and My father and I were mind blown! Magick gave us an 1 hour performance and we had the time of our lives! He was very kind and was so helpful. He hadnt had breakfast and it was sitting at the back of the shop and he was still so happy to help us! Magick made sure all these tricks we bought would suite my small hands and be perfect for me! Amazing shop interior with so many tricks. We had a 1 hour show, bought so many absolutely amazing tricks that suit my repertoire and we just had this amazing adventure we will never forget. Go here to see a variety of Magic suited for every age and size, to have great customer service and you will also have a awesome time! Thank you so much Tannens Magic Shop and Magick!
45 West, next to Levis. Sixth floor. Wonderfully historic feel, friendly and helpful staff. One or two magic holy relics framed in there as well, totally worth the pilgrimage even if Im too cack-handed to execute the trick I bought as a memento! Lack of time meant no time for a demonstration, but Kevin offered some interesting thoughts and insights on the trick while serving me.
Ive been shopping at Tannens for over 30 years. The staff is always helpful, the products are always excellent, the atmosphere is always warm and friendly. Frequently I meet well-know professional magicians there as fellow customers. When I travel I try to visit local magic shops. Nothing compares to Tannens.
I am an amateur magician and even I remember going there when I was 6 years old and that started my adventure. I now am an (OK) magician all because of Tannens. Also they are very nice and willing to help you out and show you everything even if you arent going to buy.
NYCs oldest magic shop is a legend for a reason. If you can, go on a weekday when the place is relatively empty, and if youre lucky, Magic Balay will be working. The staff are all established or up-and-coming magicians wholl gladly perform all sorts of seeming miracles for you.
Magic is supposed to be a secret, so DO NOT TELL ANYONE about this world famous store. Serving everyone from seasoned professionals to rank beginners for almost 90 years, Tannens is a New York institution. Walk in, hang around, watch and learn. Bring money because you will spend it. Located across the street from the Empire State Building on 34th Street. A safe enclave where you can learn a lot from the knowledgable and talented staff and customers. Many great magical careers started and continue to blossom at Tannens.
The service was great, they were all friendly, answered all my questions, very helpful. I dont know why others are saying their service sucks, probably different staff on duty at the time. Store is quite small, but what they carry makes up for it. They have a HUGE selection of cards, Theory 11, Ellusionist, etc. I loved my experience there and will definitely return!
I visited Tannens for the first time just recently while visiting NYC. The guys behind the counter were very friendly and extremely helpful. I was suprised to be greeted by Magick Balay from the t.v. show Close Up Kings. A great experience with some great guys.If you are a magician and are fortunate enough to be in the greatest city in the world, I suggest that you visit Tannens Magic shop @ 45 W. 34th. You wont forget it.
Cool shop with an interesting variety of tricks, one of the guys was giving a demo to some young magicians when I went in and was clearly pretty knowledgeable 😎 The shop is a little on the hidden side at the back of the 6th floor but that kind of adds to the mystique.
Sadly I was only helped by one gentleman who was extremely awkward and didnt seem like he wanted to help me. The service was horrible. The man in the beanie wasnt helping anyone, rather doing having a conversation with other customers and not helping sell anything. I expected more out of a place with such history. I will not be returning. They had a pretty good selection but the customer service just was not there.
Tendons magic is a great Store With so many things that you get lost there is so many tricks cards coins and many more illusionsThere are employees who talk to you and explain every little step in they are very very funny and talentedIf you are a professional or a beginner in magic this is a great store to go toBut the prices are a little bit too high

2022-06-23I went to an after hours magic show here and it was INCREDIBLE!! Not only was the magic impressive, but it was a great atmosphere. A small place tucked away in the corner of a building, but it has a life of its own. The Magician was awesome and all of the staff were kind and helpful. It really was worth the money and was a great experience that I definetly cant get at home. A great addition to my NYC trip!!!

2022-07-03A great shop for magicians of all ages and aptitudes. My daughter is 9 and likes magic. The young man working was patient as he kept showing her different tricks that matched her skill level so she could decide which trick to purchase. They also have a bathtub that belonged to Houdini.Check out their Magic After Hours events if you get a chance - I know I will be in the future.

2020-02-08Stopped by here on our latest trip because my fiance knows I love magic and wanted me to indulge. And Im so glad she added it to our schedule!Once you open the door, youre just hit by this magic secret den kind of feeling. The shelves are lined with magic artifacts from antique magic times. Not only that some are from famous magicians. If youre into magic you can definitely figure out who they belong to (I mean that mask definitely has to be Jeff McBride). When we stopped in there were just a few people, I assumed regulars or at least someone who is also into the hobby but able to contain themselves. They were just chatting away at some of the latest tricks to come out. One of the other patrons asked if the person behind the counter could demo one of the items he was thinking of buying. The magician behind the counter, Kevin, happily obliged. It was just one trick but he knew how to perform it perfectly. And then as my lady and I were taking all the spectacle of it all in, Kevin asked if wed like to see a trick. Naturally we said yes and he did one for her and shes been talking about it since! It eventually got a little steady with a few people coming in. Some just stopping in. Others also in the hobby. My favorite thing about the store was how you could tell Kevin was passionate about magic. I couldnt help listening to another customer talk to him about certain magicians and tricks and the way Kevin responded was so knowledgeable and so excited. And then when I got to ask about certain items I was looking for he got out something that was an off shoot of the method I was looking for and performed it for me and I was floored and sold. The best part was he knew that I was also in the hobby after talking a bit and he knew what holes I would have poked in theorizing how the trick was done while he was doing it and while he was doing the trick he told me to do what I thought was a possible way to mess up the trick. Like I was afraid I would mess up the trick by shuffling a certain way and he was like go for it and completely threw the cards around haphazardly and messily shuffled it and let me follow suit. It was so fair. I wont reveal what happened but it was beautiful to see that Kevin knew how to help me in a way only a person who is in the hobby would know.Reading low reviews, I dont think those reviewers understood this place. Maybe its just a magician thing. All I know is that if youre into the hobby of sleight of hand magic, this is a stop you absolutely have to make the new time youre in New York. Oh and they have an awesome and intimate magic show they do a few times a week after the store has closed. That is an ABSOLUTE recommend!

2020-02-13Its one of the oldest and most interesting magic shops in the States... Ive been a magician for 14 years and I have been coming here for every single one of those years. Its a great place for tourists, magic enthusiasts, magicians... or really just about anyone. Youll find people who are nothing short of talented and passionate about their work, and who are also very willing to have a conversation and share their craft.

2022-02-17Fantastic experience just going into this shop. You must make it an attraction on your next trip to NYC. I only bought two $18 card trick decks and received a $1000 of service & magic show. Told him I cant do any tricks but want to show off for my 6&8 yro grandsons. He took the time to show me easy trick decks that an absolute rookie can do. But then a real pro comes in and this place can handle ANY level of magician youre ready for. Hard to believe this kind of place & service still exists. Like no other will be your thoughts when you leave.

2019-03-06The place alone, apart from any tricks, is a magical, historic, wonderful experience. And if you get there at the right moment (which is almost every moment at Tannens), youll be thrilled, amazed, entertained...and might even walk away with a few things up your own sleeve.

2022-01-10I can’t say enough good things about this shop. The location will surprise you since it’s on the 6th floor of an apartment high rise. If your looking for a Harry Potter like street and store front, it is neither BUT, as you come out of the elevator and into the store, it feels that way.Greeted by friendly staff that allows you to roam and look around at tricks, artifacts, and books. I usually go in with a particular trick in mind That I want to buy and they will perform it for me. If I’m ready to buy after that, they show me how to do it.They are straightforward with the pricing. I have also purchased through the website without any issues. Videos are great. There are not many magic shops like this one so do not be timid going there. Tell them what you are willing to spend and what type of magic. You will not regret it.
