I went to an after hours magic show here and it was INCREDIBLE!! Not only was the magic impressive, but it was a great atmosphere. A small place tucked away in the corner of a building, but it has a life of its own. The Magician was awesome and all of the staff were kind and helpful. It really was worth the money and was a great experience that I definetly cant get at home. A great addition to my NYC trip!!!

Difficult to find? yes. Worth it? Absolutely! Last Magic shop in the big apple but the customer service is still one on one. Make that trip.

A great shop for magicians of all ages and aptitudes. My daughter is 9 and likes magic. The young man working was patient as he kept showing her different tricks that matched her skill level so she could decide which trick to purchase. They also have a bathtub that belonged to Houdini.Check out their Magic After Hours events if you get a chance - I know I will be in the future.

Stopped by here on our latest trip because my fiance knows I love magic and wanted me to indulge. And Im so glad she added it to our schedule!Once you open the door, youre just hit by this magic secret den kind of feeling. The shelves are lined with magic artifacts from antique magic times. Not only that some are from famous magicians. If youre into magic you can definitely figure out who they belong to (I mean that mask definitely has to be Jeff McBride). When we stopped in there were just a few people, I assumed regulars or at least someone who is also into the hobby but able to contain themselves. They were just chatting away at some of the latest tricks to come out. One of the other patrons asked if the person behind the counter could demo one of the items he was thinking of buying. The magician behind the counter, Kevin, happily obliged. It was just one trick but he knew how to perform it perfectly. And then as my lady and I were taking all the spectacle of it all in, Kevin asked if wed like to see a trick. Naturally we said yes and he did one for her and shes been talking about it since! It eventually got a little steady with a few people coming in. Some just stopping in. Others also in the hobby. My favorite thing about the store was how you could tell Kevin was passionate about magic. I couldnt help listening to another customer talk to him about certain magicians and tricks and the way Kevin responded was so knowledgeable and so excited. And then when I got to ask about certain items I was looking for he got out something that was an off shoot of the method I was looking for and performed it for me and I was floored and sold. The best part was he knew that I was also in the hobby after talking a bit and he knew what holes I would have poked in theorizing how the trick was done while he was doing it and while he was doing the trick he told me to do what I thought was a possible way to mess up the trick. Like I was afraid I would mess up the trick by shuffling a certain way and he was like go for it and completely threw the cards around haphazardly and messily shuffled it and let me follow suit. It was so fair. I wont reveal what happened but it was beautiful to see that Kevin knew how to help me in a way only a person who is in the hobby would know.Reading low reviews, I dont think those reviewers understood this place. Maybe its just a magician thing. All I know is that if youre into the hobby of sleight of hand magic, this is a stop you absolutely have to make the new time youre in New York. Oh and they have an awesome and intimate magic show they do a few times a week after the store has closed. That is an ABSOLUTE recommend!

Its one of the oldest and most interesting magic shops in the States... Ive been a magician for 14 years and I have been coming here for every single one of those years. Its a great place for tourists, magic enthusiasts, magicians... or really just about anyone. Youll find people who are nothing short of talented and passionate about their work, and who are also very willing to have a conversation and share their craft.

Fantastic experience just going into this shop. You must make it an attraction on your next trip to NYC. I only bought two $18 card trick decks and received a $1000 of service & magic show. Told him I cant do any tricks but want to show off for my 6&8 yro grandsons. He took the time to show me easy trick decks that an absolute rookie can do. But then a real pro comes in and this place can handle ANY level of magician youre ready for. Hard to believe this kind of place & service still exists. Like no other will be your thoughts when you leave.

The place alone, apart from any tricks, is a magical, historic, wonderful experience. And if you get there at the right moment (which is almost every moment at Tannens), youll be thrilled, amazed, entertained...and might even walk away with a few things up your own sleeve.

I can’t say enough good things about this shop. The location will surprise you since it’s on the 6th floor of an apartment high rise. If your looking for a Harry Potter like street and store front, it is neither BUT, as you come out of the elevator and into the store, it feels that way.Greeted by friendly staff that allows you to roam and look around at tricks, artifacts, and books. I usually go in with a particular trick in mind That I want to buy and they will perform it for me. If I’m ready to buy after that, they show me how to do it.They are straightforward with the pricing. I have also purchased through the website without any issues. Videos are great. There are not many magic shops like this one so do not be timid going there. Tell them what you are willing to spend and what type of magic. You will not regret it.
