The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection in New York

There were so many things to like about the hotel. The lobby is beautiful (it has its own house cat). It is timelessly decorated and a beautiful site to behold. The room we had was small, but it met our needs. The bathroom is tiny, but worked. Everything was clean. The beds at all Marriott hotels are a little hard for my tastes. The breakfast was pricy but good. You pay a daily site fee, but breakfast is mostly included in that fee. There are definitely better places to eat, but this was fine for our last day. The bar is too expensive. We each drink a glass of overpriced wine one night. The room was a little warm. The window AC unit did not cool the room sufficiently. There is also a lot of street noise, but you get used to it after the first night. The location is very close to Times Square and the Broadway Theaters. Im not a fan of Times Square, but it was far enough off to be no problem. Overall it was a good stay.
Marriott Members, even higher loyalty status, aren’t given much of their privileges here. Without being disclosed at the time of booking, I found that the restaurant at this hotel is not open. Even though larger rooms were available online, the hotel declined to upgrade the room on the grounds that they are “fully committed.” Rooms are ok. prices aren’t bad.
A landmark for literature lovers over the world, Algonquin-The Autograph Collection is the finest luxury hotel in Times Square, New York running right from 1902!The Algonquin Round Table is what its famous for considered as a place where a lot of slang, phrases and attitudes were shaped. Its also the first prominent hotel in the New York allowing women to stay there alone. So, book a room there to experience the elegance and comfort.
A true hidden gem in NYC! A flair of old time NYC with a contemporary flare. Great location to all the Broadway shows. Staff were extremely warm and welcoming, especially Hamlet! Thank you to all the staff for going and above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. We cannot wait to return soon.
We recently stayed here (weekend of November 12th) after the hotel recently re-opened on November 1st. It is an older boutique hotel that has a luxury historic feeling inside. The location is perfect to see the various sites in NYC!However, there are a few things to be aware of before arriving.-There are no amenities offered here for guests. You are purely paying for a room. Being a Titanium elite member, we were given points, late check-out and an upgrade to a suite on 1 of 3 nights.-We were given a suite on our last night so my partner could work from the room comfortably, which was very much appreciated. The suite was gorgeous and huge for a New York hotel room. However, we had to keep calling everyday about possibly switching and we couldn’t get an answer until a few hours before that we could move rooms.-At the moment they are not selling food or drinks of any kind to their guests and no room service. It is quite disappointing they don’t have, at the minimum, tea or coffee in the rooms or in the lobby to offer in the meantime.Overall impression: when the hotel is fully running, I think it will be a nice and cute place to stay. However, with nothing being open and no amenities offered for its guests, the price should reflect that. At the moment it is not worth the price for what you get.
The Algonquin, as we knew it, is no more. Of course the staff is still great but, it just doesn’t have the same feel. The ambiance is gone. During COVID shutdown the hotel went through a remodeling. The wallpaper is gone, the dining area is all but eliminated, Blue Bar is being used as a meeting room with the bar (not yet open) being moved into what was the dining area. You won’t recognize the reception desk. The lobby and dining are just ugly. It looks like any other chain Marriott. I used to think that it was the ambiance that made it worth the price but no more.
The suite was much smaller than Websites pictures and the bathroom was the smallest I have ever seen in a hotel of any caliber. We had to request a refrigerator because there wasnt one in the suite. The morning we left, we had to take our own bags down because it was too early for a bellman. I understood the historic age of this establishment but for the price I paid for this stay, it did not meet my expectations. This is probably my first and last stay there.
I did not actually stay there but I came in because my phone died and I couldnt get my car out of the garage across the street because I needed my phone. The front desk staff let me use her personal phone charger and made sure I was all right. I will definitely stay here in the future. She saved me.
A mixed experience. Beautifully renovated hotel lobby, bar and restaurant, however, the sleeping rooms are small and a bit tired, but well appointed. My first night I got in after a very late flight and although I have status with Marriott was given a room on the second floor, right near the elevator and the gym, even though my profile specifically requests room assignment away from elevators... Upon opening the room, I noticed immediately that the bed had been used, so had to go back downstairs to secure another room (this time on the 4th floor). My second night, in advance of a huge presentation at work, at around 1 AM, the fire alarm in the adjacent building started going off -- for approximately 5 minutes, before stopping and then restarting again in 25 minute intervals making it impossible to get any sleep – after this had occurred 3 times, I asked to be changed to another room, which was expeditiously done – I was given another room right next to the elevator. From a culinary perspective, I had a great quiche for breakfast one morning and also really enjoyed the edamame hummus (delish) as a snack prior to dinner outside the hotel. Upon checking out, the associate at the front desk confirmed that Id been given 10,000 extra points for my various inconveniences, which I very much appreciated. I asked for a copy of my folio to be emailed to me and this was never done. So after returning home, I called the hotel to again request that my folio be emailed. I spoke to the same associate whod helped me with check out and she assured me shed send it over. I was in the middle of preparing my expenses and 15 min later, still had nothing, so I called back to check if perhaps it had been sent to the wrong address and was chided by another associate who answered the phone indicating that they indeed had my information, but were busy with check-ins and that I would need to be patient – fair enough, but would not have been necessary if the folio had been sent upon checkout in the first place.... 2 hours later, still no folio in my inbox… Must be a heck of lot of check-ins?
Heartbreaking decision by Marriott to paint the entire lobby bright white and go for a “neon nail salon” vibe. They have ruined a historically significant gem and made it into a banal could-be-anywhere Marriott. Fortunately the excellent service survived the traumatic overhaul.
Steps from the theater district and shopping on 5th Avenue. Nice to have the hotel back open and running. The staff were excited to be back and extremely helpful and friendly to the guests. Quiet rooms and actually a fairly quiet block for NYC. All the convenience of location to the heart of mid town without the crowds.
I wish I can give a higher mark, considering the historic building, atmosphere, and friendly cheerful service, from GM and reception. The main issues are around the fact that they simply dont have bar or restaurant open, and renovations stripped off the character of the place. No Blue Bar, Round table and nothing but the room. The room itself was small, but rather tasteful. The bathroom was way too small, and showed its age... It was quite noisy at night, despite the fact that the room was on a quiet side. Not as good of noise isolation as Sofitel next door. I shouldnt complain, since it was comp stay, but I am simply trying to be objective. Location is quite good BTW, away from low class Times Square and even lower class Penn Station and Port Authority bus terminal. Will give it another try, if the opportunity arises, to check on updated amenities.
This hotel is but a shell of its former self. We, as well as other hotel guests, werent advised that there was no food or beverage service until we checked in. Had to go next door to a diner for coffee and breakfasts, as well as lunch. The recent renovation has robbed the hotel of much of its historical character. The photos on the website depict the way it was, not as it is. Gone is the iconic painting over the round table. On the plus side, the staff was friendly and efficient.
Let me start with the room. Oh, WAIT, I cant start with the room because I never saw it, despite the reservation being made 6 months prior. We were told not only wasnt the booked suite available; but, that NO rooms were available. They kept us waiting in the lobby over 45 minutes leading us to believe they were about to take us to our room when, in fact, they were scrambling to relocate us. The renovations to the lobby are horrible! All the charm is gone. It is so sterile and bright, that I could have been in a hospital operating room.
The location is perfect, and you could argue that alone is worth most of the $700/night we paid. The room however was a bit small and there was only a shower in the bathroom, no bath, and both the bar & restaurant were closed at the time. Its a nice old hotel, but not $700 nice.
We stayed here one night on our honeymoon. It was very nice. We’re not fancy people and the room was a gift. We enjoyed our stay. My only complaint is that since hotel is historic, there was no sound proofing in the room. They did tell us this when we arrived. We could hear everything going on outside, which made it difficult to sleep for someone who isn’t used to NYC noise. Otherwise, the service and included breakfast were great.
The hotel website is severely misrepresented. The hotel is under new management and was renovated. The lobby looks nothing like what is currently shown on website snd no longer has the original charm nor the original round table which made the hotel famous. In addition, the restaurant and bar remain closed with no planned date to reopen. Many floors are not available due to staff shortage.
My wife and I love the Algonquin Hotel. It is a lovely gem of historic New York City that evokes romance and leisure. I am immediately more relaxed when I visit this location. It is an oasis of serenity in the business of the city. We love it as a home away from home when we come to take in the many cultural wonders of the city. How great for us to have a glass of wine and a light dinner before a show. We can be in our room and then in our theater seats in just a matter of minutes. We hope Marriott will work to update this hotel to better meet modern heating and cooling needs. But do not change the look, decor and atmosphere of this wonderful gem. The staff at this hotel are some of the nicest, most talented people in the business. They always make us feel like royalty when we visit.
What We Liked: The staff, and we’d like to especially acknowledge Franny from Housekeeping for her exceptional servicing of our room; Yvette who staffed phone requests because her voice and manner conveyed warmth, friendliness, and helpfulness; and also Tyrone, from the hotel’s Round Table Restaurant, who exuded friendliness, helpfulness, and sincerity with all guests. They exemplified excellence in the hospitality industry. The historical significance. It is the oldest hotel in NYC and has a literary pedigree with its association with Dorothy Parker and others. The Blue Bar (My husband was impressed with one of the personable bartenders, the blue light, and the absolutely wonderful caricatures on the walls.)The hotel’s $30 daily Resort Fee could be used in the restaurant and bar.Despite being small the room was attractive and clean roomWhat To Know:I am a Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Member, and at check-in I was disappointed that no upgrade was available. Only suites were available. Sigh.If the view from the window is important, you may not want to stayin #509. Outside the window, the only view was of massive equipment. The Round Table, the restaurant in the hotel, has wonderful service, the decor is lovely, and we loved the music from the American Songbook. The quality of the food varies from one to dish to another. We enjoyed the excellent Caesar Salad, the Calamari, perfectly prepared Negroni cocktail (my husband said it was better than the one he makes, and that is saying something), and the very fresh bread. We recommend skipping the cheesecake (pitiful) and the ribeye (mediocre).
Booked a room in May 2021 for the first weekend of November 2021. Once we arrived we waited 45 minutes in the lobby until the manager came out and told me no rooms were available and we were being relocated. It was incredibly disappointing and frustrating that I was not notified ahead of time so I could have made other arrangements. This was not a good start for the new management and I will not be returning.
The Algonquin is an elegant, historic hotel in the heart of Midtown and easily accessible to all parts of Manhattan. The staff was attentive and helpful, and eager to share details of the hotels history. My room was elegant and comfortable and I appreciated the complementary water and internet. The toiletries were great. I also enjoyed meeting Hamlet VIII, the resident cat, who was handsome and sweet. I also enjoyed a lovely cocktail at the Blue Bar before bed, which the bartender invented for me as an alternative to a Manhattan. A great place to stay and I hope to visit again soon.
My husband and I treated ourselves to a stay at the Algonquin and a trip to NYC for Christmas. We were not disappointed. The hotel has a wonderful classic atmosphere, perfect for lovers of literature. Our room was small but very comfortable. Highest ratings go to the hotel staff, who were all friendly, polite, and very helpful in making our stay enjoyable. Also, the location is perfect and within easy walking distance of Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Theater District, and several museums. We will be back!
The Algonquin is a legendary hotel that lives up to its reputation. Elegant lobby where you can have a coffee, and the Blue Bar for drinks was great. I did not go the Round Table on this visit but will next time. My room was small but well-appointed and immaculate. Very comfortable bed with excellent linens. Internet service was excellent. No room service but there is an excellent diner next door and you are surrounded by great NYC restaurants.m I can’t say enough about the friendly & helpful staff in every area of the property. Stepping through the doors of the Algonquin, you leave the hustle & bustle of the city behind and walk into a civilized & elegant bit of the past. I loved it.
It’s a halfway decent hotel if you want to be located close to Times Square. Rooms are exceptionally small. Prices are jumping all over the place (from $250 to $600 for the same type of room) on booking sites. Rooms are dated, but are relatively clean. There is a bar downstairs. Members of the staff are excellent. You are expected to tip a lot, so add it to your expenses. We chose the hotel because of its association with the literati. Four stars for its historicity and location. We lucked out and there was no garbage pickup during our stay. Otherwise, there would be no sleep. We had to keep our window open, as AC was not working properly. On the downside, we had to walk on the streets where bags of noxious garbage were piled up.
The rooms are extremely small (the room door hits the bed upon opening) and the room had a musty smell. The common corridors are dated in design and are tight and noisy with what seems to be minimal sound proofing. We ended up changing hotels to one down the street. Aside from these issues, the staff were welcoming, helpful, and courteous. The hotel is well located in the theatre district and the lobby bar areas seemed lively and well maintained.
We come back to the Algonquin every year in December - we wouldnt stay anywhere else! First and foremost is your staff. The dining room staff have become people whom we look forward to seeing every year, especially Otto in the evenings and Chuck at breakfast! They remember us and take very good care of us - they really make eating in the dining room a pleasure. The food is great, too! Our room is always lovely and well cleaned. Finally - we love Hamlet! (As we loved Mathilda) The front desk staff and doormen are super nice and very helpful - they really make you feel welcome. The Algonquins location is great - you cant beat it if you want to go to the theater. There are a lot of hotels in the area, but the Algonquin has a unique blend of charm and comfort that make staying there a pleasure.
The staff is excellent at this property and very helpful. It is located right in the theater district so there is easy access to that and Times Square. I was upgraded to the James Thurber Suite room 606 which was very nice and includes a sitting area but no views. Hot water did not work when I checked in and that night but was the next morning. This property has a great lobby area and a really good band there are night. Even with the water issues I would stay again.
Great location and beautiful lobby setting and nice service by most staff. One attendant not so friendly. The Manager made accommodations to give us a better bed and larger room after I shared the bed was so uncomfortable. I ask had he ever slept on his beds. He did go beyond to make our stay nice. I am a travel agent and stayed at other hotels on my stay and for the normal price in high season I would never pay that amount for the historical significance. If you want to be away from noise and more private it was a good location and atmosphere.
This was the greatest hotel I will never stay at again. The comfort of the bed is the second most important to me (the first is cleanliness). The bed at the Algonquin was THE WORST of any Marriott bed I have ever experienced. For the price of what you pay at this hotel (and I was upgraded to a suite with suite night rewards), it should be a bed you feel like youre sleeping on a cloud. I loved everything else about the hotel: the staff, the cat, the location, the nostalgia, the restaurant (I did get a free breakfast with my Titanium Status), the bar and the suite itself. Its just a shame you pay so much per night to not be able to get a good nights sleep. Im one and done at the Algonquin.
This hotel was only slightly more expensive than the chain hotels in the city. It had classic wood panels in the lobby and had beautiful decor. The hotel is rich in history and it felt quite cozy and personal. We did not have to get into a line to enter the elevator like many other big hotels in New York. The staff was friendly and helpful at all times. We were celebrating my 50th birthday and the front desk offered free breakfast to honor my special day.
Great experience! The hotel is gorgeous and full of history, the rooms are a bit small but cozy and fancy, and the staff is incredibly friendly. The hotel is just under two city blocks from Time Square, so its very convenient. The bar and restaurant are quite upscale and decently priced for a historic and beautiful place.Hamlet the cat is adorable and quite friendly, and our concierge Peter was a great guy with a good sense of humor and very welcoming.Only weird note is I kept getting static shocks everywhere, but it made my wife and I laugh.
What a nice Hotel! The lobby is great and the staff is just the best. We spend just two nights there and were really happy. So, why 3 stars? The room!! The bed was really bad, old I would say. The bathroom was small, very small. But other than that the hotel was really nice.
We have stayed at this hotel numerous times before since it is close to the theaters but not in the middle of Times Square. We received un upgrade due to status and had a really nice one bedroom suite. Bed was really comfortable. We had drinks in the lobby bar after the show and enjoyed the comfortable old-time charm of that space. Just a great location.
Ive been to NYC many times and stayed in a number of overpriced Manhattan hotels, but the Algonquin was worth every penny. Very nice updated interior in this historic building. The room was spotless as youd expect from an Autograph Collection hotel. Everyone on staff was more than helpful with any questions or recommendations, even helping us arrange black car service to the airport on check-out. I highly recommend this hotel. As always, if you found my review helpful please take a second to hit the 👍, thanks!
This hotel is absolutely everything one could ask for—awesome location, safe area, beautiful lobby and rooms, great food, excellent service. The added benefit of staying here is walking into an amazing piece of history. The hotel maintains its historic charm while being completely stylishly updated. Even though it’s in Times Square and close to all the theaters, the hotel’s location is private and quiet. We stayed in a one bedroom suite which was extremely spacious by any standard and definitely a fair price for the space. Super comfy beds, immaculately clean, easy to control the temp in the rooms. In the lobby or Round Table Restaurant we enjoyed late night snacks and drinks after a show each night and the food was delicious. Next door there’s a good diner for breakfast and anything else you might need is in quick walking distance. Easy to get a cab at the entrance or end of the block. I travel with my two teenage daughters and always try to stay at an historic hotel wherever we go—this one is definitely special! We loved it.
Was going to see a Broadway show in NYC and wanted to stay overnight to make the evening more pleasant. Chose the Algonquin, since I had stayed at another Autograph Collection hotel by Marriott and enjoyed it. As this is an old classic hotel, the rooms are on the small side, but that is to be expected in an older hotel. Also one of the elevators was being renovated, which they mentioned, but that didnt create an issue for me. However, the hotel is well cared for with an attentive and staff that genuinely seemed interested in me enjoying my stay. I visited the Blue Bar for drinks before and after the Show and then had breakfast the following morning and had a great experience at both places. Also when making reservation, advised that my wife is allergic to pets, since the hotel was Pet Friendly. We were assured theyd take care to clean well and confirmed that they had done so when we checked in. We had no issues regarding allergies, so they apparently did what they promised. I travel for business and can say that this was a very enjoyable stay and will certainly be back!
We stayed here last weekend and it quickly became one of our favorite spots in the City. The way they have tried to preserve the hotels literary tradition and give it an artistic taste is brilliant. Yes, the rooms are as small as any Times Square hotel (and as noisy), but it is a stay you will remember. They were very open to a late check-out, which can be a lifesaver if you stayed up late the night before. There is a destination fee, and although it forces you to spend some money in the hotels super expensive bar or restaurant, it is not too bad. We had an issue with our bill though: the receptionist misinformed us about the breakfast being included in the rate. Then they not only charged us for it, but somehow over charged (almost double) for a breakfast for 2. The manager, however, was very helpful in settling this and refunding the charges. The bottomline: hotel ambience and its managers are nice, but make sure to know exactly how much they are going to charge you and double check what is included. Also: the restaurant and the bar are too expensive. Finally, dont forget to see the resident cat!
We chose this hotel for three reasons: 1) its central location; 2) its history; 3) its not-outrageous price. I read the reviews & the worst anyone had to say was that the rooms were small, which wasnt a deal-breaker for us. The reality was far & above what I expected. Along w/ the elegant lobby/dining room came friendly staff! Genuinely friendly, not forced-friendly--so important. Chuck & his breakfast staff, for example, knew us by our second day. Our room was so classy & not small at all, plus it was in the back, so it was quiet. Throughout our stay we noticed & delighted in the small things--the worn marble steps on the stairways, the humor on the service/quiet please cards for the housekeepers, the framed New Yorker covers & cartoons from long ago, and of course, Hamlet the cat. I wish maybe that the elevators could be bigger or that someone would play the glossy grand piano in the lobby, but thats about it. Also, we didnt go into the Blue Bar because the lighting was hard on our senior eyes. The overall commitment to quality made coming home after an exciting NYC day just that much more pleasurable.
A favorite for my wife and I. We love the historic traditional style lobby and Round Table restaurant. Great, convenient location. Hamlet, the hotel cat, is a nice added touch. Rooms are small but well appointed. Beds very comfortable. Small, slow elevators. But overall we highly recommend this property for a great visit to Midtown and the Theater district with the convenience to 5th Avenue, Bryant Park and the NYC Library, Rockefeller Center and Times Square.
The Algonquin is a wonderful charming place to stay while in NYC. Located just blocks from Rockefeller Center, it is a great location for a business or personal trip. The historical significance is and atmosphere is easily appreciated and there is a sense of coziness in the entire place. The staff is very accommodating and friendly, and overall attentive. The room itself is comfortable, with an amazing bed and pillows you can fall into at the end of a busy day. The place is very clean and the bathrooms are modernized - everything is simply beautiful.
This was our first experience staying at the Algonquin and we are so glad we did. The hotel has the look and feel of the classic, old-style New York hotels but with updated rooms and amenities. You can practically feel the ghosts of the famous Broadway stars and great writers who gathered here. We loved that they had Hirschfeld drawings up in the Blue Bar. Our room was very comfortable and roomy compared to most NYC rooms. The bed and bedding were great. Plenty of closet space and the bathroom was great. The perfect spot for a get-away weekend. And the location is perfect for getting to shows, great restaurants or other attractions you might want to see.
This hotel made my first time in NYC that much better! All of the staff were beyond friendly. Every one of them had smiles on from the front desk to housekeeping. The room was very clean, and the bed very comfortable. The bathroom was clean, but quite small (pretty normal for NYC). On my birthday they sent up a chocolate birthday cake with a nice card from the manager to our room, which I thought was so sweet. They also gave me a book to read with a card about keeping up the literary tradition of the hotel. The bartenders are all very friendly and make delicious cocktails. Everyone at the hotel really went above and beyond to make it a trip of a lifetime. It’s also in a great location. A short walk from the middle of Times Square, but far enough to not be kept up at night from noise and lights.
This is a very clean hotel and the rooms are stylish and nicely decorated. The shower was terrific, good water pressure and good shower head. And the mirror in bathroom was excellent, that is always one of my pet peeves about hotels, but the bathroom and bedroom had plenty of mirrors and there was also a lighted magnifying mirror for makeup. The toiletries were fabulous goat milk products from upstate NY. Loved them! All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. My sister and I enjoyed our stay at the Algonquin and would stay there again. I also think the location is great for walking around NYC. But if you need a taxi, the staff are very willing to get one for you.
Charming Hotel that upholds it’s cultural reputation! Enjoyed the lobby , the atmosphere was warm, wonderfully inviting, and festive. Great jazz band and delicious food. Bedroom was also very nice, clean and comfortable. It’s an older more conservative hotel but it was very clean I would highly recommend it! Wonderful location in midtown!
I thoroughly enjoyed staying at this hotel. The staff were friendly and went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable and had a good stay. The fitness center was clean and exactly what I was looking for. The restaurant had delicious food and good wine and a jazz band with live music. Overall I had a fantastic stay and will definitely be back!
Starting at check-in, not once did we receive a “Thank you for being a Marriott rewards member”. The rooms are small which is expected in the city however the mattress was worn out. Every time you lie down, you roll to the middle. The water temperature never gets beyond Luke warm which means taking a shower is uninviting. As an older hotel, it has a window air unit. Fine but at least keep this up to date... it was definitely older and noisy. At check out, we never received “Thank you for your stay”, “How was your stay”, etc. Nothing. Just a here’s your bill. Two positives. It was quiet at night. The second, the doorman. Very pleasant. Always smiling.I would not stay here again. Quite frankly, I receive better care and appreciation when traveling to small towns, with only a Fairfield Inn or Courtyard.
What an amazing hotel!!! We had the standard room and it was very cozy and the bathroom was huge. Walking into the hotel is almost like traveling back in time to a more elegant era. The lobby was truly remarkable and the food served at breakfast was fantastic. We really enjoyed have a nightcap at the Blue Room as well... This historic hotel is a great value when you compare others that are one block away in Times Square. Excellent location and very quiet outside the hotel at night, which makes for a nice nights sleep. We were extremely pleased with our stay at the Algonquin and plan to stay there the next time we are in NYC.
We have stayed here many times while visiting NYC, for leisure and NYU appointments. it is central and relatively more quiet than other hotels in the Times Square area. The staff talks to you, makes you feel like you are family, and are genuinely concerned about your needs and stay. The bed is one of the most comfortable we have slept in, in NYC. The rooms are clean and well maintained. The restaurant staff and food are top notch, and make you feel like you’re the only customer there. My wife has stayed here many times alone when I was in the hospital, for extended periods. This is her favorite hotel because she feels safe, secure and appreciated here.
The staff at the Algonquin was great. The doormen were pleasant and smiling and the front desk staff was on point. They are the reason Ive decided to only stay at the Algonquin for my NYC work travel. The hotel is in good shape too, and properly straddles the old vs. new line that is ever so hard to do in NYC....and stay in business.Well done and thanks. See you guys in February.Andrew
The Algonquin Hotel is warm and charming; the staff, down to earth and welcoming. Hamlet the Hotel Cat is reason enough to stay there. I love everything about the place; it’s New York City at its best. I get a thrill every timeI come through the revolving door and enter the lobby. It feels like a home away from home. If you’re looking to stay at a place with no history, charm, warmth, or uniqueness, this isn’t it.
A literary landmark! Now run by Marriott, so pay with points if you have them, I suppose. Convenient to all midtown, Broadway and Times Square attractions. Excellent service at the front desk, restaurant and doormen. Room, or the Vanity Fair suite, where I stayed, was super comfortable and clean. Excellent shower. My new favorite place to stay in NYC.
The Algonquin is terrifically convenient to Times Square and the theater district, and so attracts a fair number of tourists. However, it is also a very business-friendly hotel, with great internet and ease of getting to mid-town meetings. I stay there for almost all of my NYC business trips (probably 9 out of 10 of them in the past few years) and highly recommend it to business travelers. I will note, however, that the rooms -- while modernized -- are small, in keeping with the architectural style back then. As such, dont expect there to be much room for more than two people, and those two people need to be very friendly!
While trying to sell our house in Philly, we knew we had to “keep it close” to celebrate out 35th anniversary. Not a fan of New York, but my wife wanted to see Wicked on Broadway. To make it special, and as a Marriott loyalist, I chose this “autograph” level hotel. First, we enjoyed that it was a historical hotel. Second, the staff was fabulous. Third, the location (between Central Park and Times Square) was perfect for the activities we planned. It was Marriott quality on steriods. We’re happy with the value, the service, and everything else about our stay. Highly recommended for business or personal travel to New York.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! The Algonquin is a lovely and intimate spot that is centrally located - easy walking distance to Times Square and the Theater District. The bellman, Manny and the front desk staff all very friendly and attentive, especially Edwin, upon checking out took charge in settling a small problem we encountered. Hamlet, the Algonquin cat, was asleep in his treetop perch when we checked in, but we saw him a couple more times guarding the front desk. Rooms are small but clean, quiet, and lovely. Plenty of hot water for your shower and the towels are oh so fluffy! We never left the hotel for dinner as they have a restaurant right in the lobby. Service was very good and ambiance was very nice. Food was excellent especially the Pork Chop with mashed Yukon gold potatoes. We took advantage of waking up early to their breakfast which did not disappoint. I ordered a cheese, ham and asparagus omelette and potatoes which proved to be a good decision. The potatoes were savory and the omelette left me feeling satisfied. Would definitely stay here again!
I always stay at the Algonquin when in New York City. I love staying at an iconic hotel that has had so much history and tradition. Those that say it needs a complete modernization are missing the point and should just stay somewhere that meets their minimalist needs. The Algonquin has blended the travelers needs and historic ambiance perfectly. This was the first hotel in NY to allow women unaccompanied by a male to stay here, Lerner and Lowe wrote My Fair Lady here in one of their suites, Dorothy Parker and her literary friends had daily lunches here, the predecessor to The New Yorker, they always have a Hotel Cat, Harry Connick jr., Diana Krall got their musical starts here, and the attentive staff is amazing. There is no reason not to treat yourself to be part of its legacy and great location!
This classic New York hotel has been revitalized under the Marriott umbrella. The staff is super friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the area. Only a block or two from many theaters. And, it even has a lobby cat. As a native New Yorker, it does sadden my a bit that Marriott choose to close the Oak Room, which was a great, intimate setting for cabaret. The rooms, although small, are stylish and comfortable. My only quibble it that the prices in the restaurant are somewhat inflated. But, there are plenty of dining and drinking options nearby that the staff is willing to recommend.
The service was fantastic, from the front desk to the folks that handled my bags to the doorman. I really appreciated the personal touch relative to most hotels I’ve stayed in; folks remembers who I was, explained the history of the hotel, etc. some of the amenities were a little old (not in a charming way). The shower tile was a little worse for wear, and the reading lamp above my corner of the bed didn’t work. But those were minor issues, it was a fantastic stay!
We stayed at the Algonquin for a week to celebrate my birthday in late February. From the moment we walked in the door until we had to go home, we felt like valued friends – – even more than just guests. The staff was warm, friendly, and tasty oh, so accommodating. When they discovered we were celebrating my birthday, they sent some extra treats to our room. And on the day itself, a lovely card, a book and a delicious cheesecake showed up. We try to stay at the Algonquin whenever we go to New York, and the staff has come to know us as much as the hotel staff can know guests. We always feel appreciated, and enjoy coming back time after time.
This hotel was the perfect place for us, offering proximity to shops and attractions, and excellent public transport links. The staff were uniformly helpful and friendly. The lobby, restaurant and bar areas were elegant and welcoming. The hotel made things easy for us on our last day by offering an extremely professional free baggage storage service and having a computer and free printer available in the second floor Business Center for checking into our fight. The room was larger than expected, elegant, comfortable and clean. The bed was extremely comfortable. We would recommend the Algonquin Hotel, and we will try to stay there again when we return to New York.
We stayed here for 4 nights and loved everything about this hotel. Location was perfect for our needs. The staff, comfort and cleanliness of the room was excellent as was the decor. We ate in the bar and lounge and the food was perfect along with quality service. Wifi worked well, staff pleasant and we enjoyed the class feel of this hotel. The Algonquin is different from mainstream hotels in a really good way and it felt like an Oasis every time we stepped back in from the buzz of NYC. Loved it and will be back.
This hotel is nothing like Marriott. Its unique and cozy. Pretty much all Manhattan hotel rooms are small so you might as well stay at a hotel that is one of the oldest in the city with a cat that hangs out on the check in counter. The staffs were friendly and as a platinum member I got free breakfast at the restaurant. But theres no breakfast service during the weekend and they give you 750 Marriott points instead. They have a gym on the 2nd floor which is not too bad. Overall a nice stay hotel in NYC.
Being a fan of Dorothy Parker and the rest of the Vicious Circle, Ive been wanting to stay at this hotel for years. Sometimes you can build something up in your head so much that when you actually experience it you are let down. This was NOT the case. I love this hotel. The staff outdid themselves. Everyone was friendly and very helpful. The hotel was beautiful and well kept. We didnt eat much at the hotel but the few things we did order were expertly prepared. If I were a local the Blue Bar would definitely become my usual hang out. The next time I visit New York I will be staying at The Algonquin again.
This hotel is elegant, classic and a beautiful place to stay. The décor is timeless, the atmosphere old world. The suite was more than expected, large, clean and comfortable. The pull out sofa bed was comfortable and the stay was extremely positive. The hotel is a three block walk from Grand Central so an easy maneuver to get there. The food was delicious and the staff very friendly and positive. It was not noisy as stated in other reviews. If one desires a change from the chain atmosphere this is definitely the place to stay. After staying here I would never stay in any other hotel in NYC. And Hamlet the cat is an extra perk of this timeless hotel.
Wonderful hotel. Full of history, well maintained. Rooms are cozy with high standard and newly refurbished bathrooms. The staff was extraordinary friendly. We travelled with two children (6 and 7) and were very well taken care off. We will highly recommend this hotel in NY, also for families with children.
We have stayed here four or five times and always enjoy the ambiance at the hotel - it’s connection to the writers who gathered at the roundtable, the hotel cat and the wonderful lobby/lounge. Some of the staff, who have worked there for years, are terrific. Yes, the rooms are a bit small, but that’s New York. The rooms are well appointed and the bathroom, though small, is nice. The location very near Times Square and the theaters is ideal.
Two to three times a year, I travel to NYC to attend the theater. I only stay at the Algonquin. All theaters in the main theater district are within walking distance. Good food is available at the hotel and close by. Staff is helpful in arranging transportation if it is necessary. Subways are also close by.I am woman with a disability who travels alone. I feel safe and cared for in this hotel. I cant say enough about the friendliness and responsiveness of the staff. Even the new cat, Hamlet, is friendly! The rooms are small but certainly adequate in size. They are clean. If more space is needed to read or sit and talk, the lobby is the place to go anyway. It is like sitting in a well-appointed living room or library. There is nothing better than reading the hotel-provided New York Times, Wall Street Journal, or book In the lobby wlth coffee, a cocktail, or desert.Because the hotel building is old things are sometimes quirky. This part of this historic buildings charms. On my multiple trips, little things have cropped up. Last time, the dresser was out of level, and drawers kept opening on there own. If reported, issues are resolved promptly. Remodeling of the rooms has modernized them without altering the historic character of the building. The food is good. Try the veggie burger from the Blue Bar!I think you get it. I LOVE staying at the Algonquin and will never stray!
Wow, beautiful place. Rooms are well appointed and comfortable. Plugs on both niteside tables. The people were very friendly. Eddie took us to our room and told us some of the history. Note: it was the first hotel to allow single women to rent rooms. The architecture in the hotel is stunning. The bed seems comfortable (just got checked in). More notes after an evening in the Blue Bar and Breakfast. Oh, of spectacular note is that the hotel has a hotel cat named Hamlet. Ok. Update the next morning. Breakfast us great. The corned beef hash us made from deli corned beef. You can taste the spices used. Poached eggs on the corned beef and the Benedict were perfect. Chuck has been here 40 years and was amazing. Great stories and fantastic service. 10/10 we will not stay anywhere else in NYC.
My recent stay at the Algonquin was memorable. The hotel is a step back in time. The drink menu is inspired. The rooms are cozy and offer sanctuary after a busy day and evening in NYC. But perhaps the most memorable part of our stay was the staff at the Algonquin. They seemed to genuinely care for the guests and for one another. Their warmth and hospitality toward the guests and pride in the hotel made us feel a part of the NYC experience. And of course Hamlet, the Algonquin cat, was on duty as well. I look forward to returning to the city and to the Algonquin.
If you dont mind spending a little extra for the sake of extra comfort and service, a great mid-town location, immersion in NYC literary & theater history, and feeling like you are somewhere very special, the Algonquin Hotel is for you. Whether youre a business or vacation traveler, this is a fine example of what a unique NYC hotel can be. The Blue Bar, food and lobby services were great. Our room was very clean and comfortable. Im sure well come again.
I had a couple of issues in my stay. First, the bedding and mattress was lumpy and not comfortable. It was dated and needs a refresh. Was not able to obtain a restful night sleep on that mattress, had a dip or crease in the middle of it (just plain old).Second, I politely requested for towels / etc. via the Marriott app and there was no response from Housekeeping at your hotel for an undue period. It took them awhile to respond and when they did come, they forgot half of what they were supposed to bring.Third, as a Marriott Bonvoy Elite member, I am typically comped breakfast ... and while I ordered a $25 egg and toast combo ... versus the $24 free continental option, I was billed an up charge of $10 per person ... does not make sense based on the pricing that was listed on the menu. I could see a fee of $1 (difference in price, $25 minus $24), but not what I was charged. I paid it as I did not frankly have time to argue this point with the waiter. Ridiculous upcharge without any information anywhere on the menu. All in all, I would say that your Hotel did not live up to the Bonvoy Brand promise. I am less than pleased with my stay.
My daughter and I came for a Mother/Daughter getaway. We loved the staff. All were welcoming, accommodating and kind. The bed and room were perfect for us. We loved having control of the thermostat! The espresso provided in the lobby was very good. We loved Hamlet. Each time we returned to the hotel we would look for him. The live music at night in the lobby was fantastic and fun to listen to. It was like stepping back in time and reliving a part of history. Christian at the Blue Bar is truly fascinating and everyone should go say hello to him. We loved the history and stories about the hotel. The workout facility is very nice. The location was fantastic. So easy to get everywhere we wanted to go. We will definitely come back and stay at the Algonquin... and we will bring friends.
My wife and I spent a weekend at the Algonqun Hotel in New York City. The best thing about this hotel is the staff. They made us feel welcome. From the housekeeper to the front desk to the staff in the Blue Bar, we were treated with courtesy and an apparent desire to provide us whatever we might need. As a property with a history, it would be easy to be pretentious and maybe a little snooty. It was not. We have stayed at more expensive and perhaps prestigious hotels but had a better stay here. As an older property, the rooms are on the small side, but then there are new properties that are even more compact. There is an annoying destination fee but that was offset by a generous food and beverage credit. Oh and then there is Hamlet, the Algonquins lobby cat and plenipotentiary of the hotel.
Rooms are small and clean. Where this hotel shines is its staff, location and the lobby. The staff is always helpful with recommendations, tickets, etc. The location is within walking distance too so many NYC sites! And the lobby... pull up a chair, order a cocktail and enjoy the pianist playing during happy hour. Such a relaxing place to be after battling the crowds of NYC.
The room we had was the Barrymore Suite and that was pretty awesome and amazing. The room itself had lots of space and was set up nicely. The bathroom has one of my favorite bathtub setups ever. The unfortunate part is that there isnt any room service for food but thats not really too much of a problem as the location is great. The service was ok. We were not often greeted so if you need someone to open doors and welcome you back, then you may be disappointed. The location is fantastic. Walking distance of so much shopping and food! There are quite a few amazing restaurants here so this hotel is very centrally located.
When you walk into the lobby of the Algonquin, just a block from the middle of Time Square, you realize that you are not going to have a cookie-cutter experience. My family of 6 (wife + kids 13 to 19yr) LOVED the feel of this hotel -- and I was immediately the hero for selecting such a cool home-base for our couple days in the city. We learned that its the oldest operating hotel in the city, with a TON of history, and just dripping with a vibe -- the lobby, the Algonquin Cat, the Blue Bar, did I mention the lobby? We grabbed a suite and an adjoining queen room and were very comfortable, but understand that (a) this is NYC, and (b) this is the hotel was built in the eary-1900s -- so the standard (queen) rooms are appropriately sized but not exactly spacious, although the suite was surprisingly very roomy. The rooms are VERY updated but true to the nostalgic feel of the hotel. The service was great. Very responsive, very helpful, while not smothering. Definitely take a few minutes to soak in the Blue Bar for one of their cocktails, or perk up before going out on the town with one of the best espressos I ever tasted. (Or follow my lead and do both!)Summary: We will be back for a longer stay next time so we can spend more time hanging out and enjoying the hotel.
The hotel was unique and old school. We loved Hamlet. Our Yorkie was well received. Staff was great when we checked, especially Peter! However, every encounter with front desk was rude thereafter. Even when we asked a simple question about where the coffee was or show info we were treated as if we were bothering people and like we were stupid. Location was great. Easy walk to Time Square and Broadway.
Of course, it’s an historic hotel – – and the location is fabulous for anything you might want to do in Manhattan. That said, it surprised us that the staff could not give us accurate rates for parking – – which is available across the street for about $55 a day (staff said $44 a day – – you think they could get that right?). Our room was clean with a beautiful nice bed, but very small – someways typical of old New York hotel rooms. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant, which was disappointing – – in attentive service, hotel level pricing for food that would have been better at the deli next door. The lobby is wonderful and is still a gathering place for lots of New York theater types, so that’s fun.
This has to be by far one of the best Autographs Ive been to. Traveling 160+ nights a year, sometimes the expectations end up diminishing. The Algonquin is now my go-to Midtown spot. The rooms maintain the cultural / historical vibe but have all been updated to provide top-notch amenities. The restaurant was great for breakfast and very reasonable. The lobby area has full service in the evenings and nights which is a HUGE bonus. The area has tons of seating all in unique arrangements giving it a very personal feel. The food and beverage service was astoundingly on-point.
The Algonquin is a delightful, small hotel in a quiet neighborhood, just two blocks off the southern tip of Times Square, and therefore within a short stroll of most theaters, the NY Public Library, the Diamond District, Restaurant Row and 5th Avenue Shopping. What a great location! The hotel has been recently updated, the rooms are cozy and the atmosphere is peaceful. My wife and I like staying there whether in town for business or shopping. Oh, and getting a cab there is no problem, which it can be at other locales. The staff is excellent, ready and willing to help with any concern. The lobby area with food service is a plus. The unique history and the house cat, Matilda, give the hotel a feeling of warmth, almost like going home to Aunt Beas. When friends ask which hotels we like in New York, we always tell them, Stay at the A.
The Algonquin gave us a beautiful experience for an overnight stay in Times Square. This hotel is best described as Classic Luxury... Sure it has modern touches, but it was also like traveling through time, fully expecting to come into a smoke filled lobby with men in suits, speaking in that New York accent, arguing over the Yankees game. The staff was phenomenal in helping us since we arrived a little too early (whoops!). The bell service was more than accomodating before we received our room and after check out.I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Our kids loved it! We dont stay in luxury hotels very often, if ever, but this is one we will gladly stay in again!
The oldest hotel in New York but worth every penny of our stay! Characterised by the squeaky lifts, narrow corridors and homely wooden staircase rails, we certainly will be returning to this hotel in future. Not really child friendly but was quite impressionable that most of the staff were elderly like the hotel and quite chirpy too. The spatial use of the not so big rooms and bathrooms was quite ingenious just like the hotel lobby and the back lit picture frame over the bed head. The sound proofing was very very good just as the food and drinks served were quite exquisite and tasty: no wonder why the bar stays open till very very late . A really nice autograph hotel.
A historical hotel now owned by Marriott Group. Service is very friendly and the lobby is very nice. Rooms are on the small side which is normal for NYC, not the newest but quite cozy. They have a resident feline in the lobby. Look out for Hamlet the orange tabby who tends to hang out near the front desk. Excellent location near Bryant park and on a relatively quiet block away from the Time Square craziness.
I cant say enough nice things about this hotel. My husband and I chose to stay here for 3 nights before we departed for a cruise. The location cant be beat as you are within walking distance or the subway to everything. I picked this hotel because it has a resident cat, which I found unique. It also has amazing literary / drama history with The Algonquin Round Table from the 1920s who met here daily. The rooms were well appointed and the hotel had a touch of old world charm to it. Service was outstanding from check in to check out. A gorgeous piece of history and a great place to stay!
Stayed 3 nights for a girls weekend, location was perfect, easy access to various activities and transportation. Hotel includes meal credit and site-seeing options for the destination fee which is nice. Food at the local restaurant was delicious. Room was small, bathroom is tiny but clean and updated. But dont come to NYC to stay in the room. Will definitely stay here again.
Wow, this hotel is not like most hotels. First of all, theres this beautiful cat prowling around. Im highly allergic to cats but I didnt have any issues as they keep it clean and I just made sure to not touch or go near the cat - it just hung out around the front desk. Now - the room is tiny, the beer and cocktails are expensive, but the burger is amazing! The burger was well made and the fries were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside but soft and warm on the inside. The blue steak burger was a perfectly cooked medium (as I asked for) and was amazing as I quickly devoured it. The burger is normally not available for dinner but I asked politely send the wait staff had no issues accommodating my request.
Lobby was very nice. Rooms were OK, nice decor but very small with equally small bathroom, tiny shower. Very close to neighboring building so not able to open the blinds. Yes this is NYC but I would rather stay at the Marriott Marquis around the corner with a nicer room, a view and modern conveniences like ample working elevators. Several guests waited 15+ minutes for the elevator upon departure. Not an option to walk 8 flights down the stairs with suitcases. Overall i wouldnt stay here again.
Overall a pleasant stay, with many staff presenting as polite and helpful. The building itself is a star, well preserved and maintained, representative of an earlier time... Rooms were small but clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Dinner & drinks at the Blue Bar and breakfast next day were expensive but filling and prepared well. Uncharacteristically, the front desk staff were alternately businesslike bordering on rude, frazzled (with one unceremoniously and roughly removing the hotel cat from the front desk), or unknowledgeable (specifically with regard to multiple reports Ive read that a complimentary copy of the New Yorker is provided to guests). Unfortunately because of those experiences I can only make a half-hearted recommendation.
I stayed at the Algonquin two weeks ago on a quick, overnight trip for work. Beautiful, historic hotel in an absolutely perfect and central location. As reviewers suggested, the bathrooms are small, but it’s NYC and the charm of the hotel more than make up for it! It was a bit loud, but again, NYC... Staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable making this hotel a repeat for future NYC trips
My boyfriend and I came here for our 7th anniversary and it was marvellous! The staff were all friendly and full of character. They were all an absolute pleasure to deal with. Anything we needed (including meeting the now-retired Matilda) they provided. The cost was reasonable for the absolutely gorgeous hotel. The room was impeccably clean and the hotel was maintained beautifully with pride. We only had one complaint- no mini fridge!!! To be fair the rooms are fairly small, so there may not be a way to store that practically. It would have been nice to have had the mini fridge as we were here for four days, but that was our only complaint.Anyways, this hotel comes highly recommended. If you love charming hotels, clean rooms, a central location, great price, and a great staff this is the ideal hotel!
Wonderful stay at this throw back in time hotel that will make you feel like youre experiencing a great old movie. Rooms are small so we reserved a suite, the Dorothy Parker suite. Amazing detail in the décor and some of her hand written notes are framed. Definitely a boutique hotel with small elevators which add to its character. Good food, slow service but you can tell that the staff has been there for years and are very gracious. Great breakfast, great cocktails. The Blue Bar was not quite what we expected but was entertaining none the less. The lobby is the best to have a cocktail or nightcap or to read a good book. Make sure to go to Bryant Park if you stay this summer, AMAZING café areas and restaurants.
Clean, convenient and charming, this place is staffed with professional service people who know how to make someone happy. Our room was clean and comfortable. The lobby was old NY with paneling and comfortable seating. The $30 per day extra fee was a bit of an inconvenience, but other than that this place was great.
Our stay at the Algonquin was an amazing way to spend my birthday weekend. The historic features were wonderful and well showcased. The lobby was beautiful and welcoming. We had a wonderful cheese plate while taking in the great beauty of the lobby. Our room was clean and cozy. The view was nice and the area around the hotel was great to walk around in. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone staying in Midtown.
The Algonquin Hotel is my favorite hotel in NYC and I stay at this property 3-4 times a year. The lobby is stunning, the Blue Bar and RoundTable serve delicious food and sensational cocktails, the staff are friendly, accommodating and always go the extra mile to make sure that my stay is perfect. The rooms are beautiful and they have a beautiful cat named Hamlet that greets the guests upon check in. I highly recommend this hotel when visiting NYC. The hotel is within walking distance to Times Square and Rockefeller Center which is an added bonus.
This is a unique boutique hotel with an extraordinary literary history, and Marriott has been smart enough to let its individuality shine. Rooms have quotes on the door from notables like Edna Ferber and Dorothy Parker, while reproductions of covers from The New Yorker are in the halls. Staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms are small, of course, but nicely modernized with upscale toiletries. Think of it as human scale. Elite Marriott members get complimentary continental breakfast, which can include oatmeal and an awesome bagel and lox. Otherwise: $22 for pastries, juice and coffee is a bit steep without an expense account. I was there with my wife for vacation; we met in NYC and had a great time.
My go-to for theater trips to the City. The rooms are smallish (even by NY standards) but if you pay a little extra for the king rooms, its noticeably more space. Theres no room service, but those are the only two downsides to this great hotel. Its in easy walking distance to most Broadway houses and its close to Times Square, but being that one block removed means its not quite so chaotic in the immediate surrounding area. The beds are super-comfortable and they really pay attention to Marriott Bonvoy status. The staff has always been great and the Blue Bar is a cool hangout. Sen Sakana is a terrific Japanese-Peruvian fusion on the same block and the Lambs Club just across Sixth Avenue is a great place for Sunday brunch with a nice trio playing live music. All this plus the sheer history of this building (Round Table met here, much of My Fair Lady was written and/or rewritten here, the bar used to be the entrance to the stables, etc.) make it a great choice.
A good character hotel in a great location.Attentive staff, a great bar and Matilda the cat were the highlights.Rooms are comfortable but a bit limited for the price. No tea/coffee in the room. This is far from your normal Marriott (which has good and bad bits).Be prepared for New York noise, each room is equipped with ear plugs! I think the noise reduction could be improved at the hotel, especially with better windows. But we had a great time overall and the hotel contributed to this.
Since I stay hotel more than 100 nights/yr, I can compare the value of stay. This hotel is much cleaner than any hotel where I stayed as an old facility. I felt so comfortable every day. Good size (12 stories) in NY, no waiting for elevators, very quiet location off from major streets.
My wife and I have always wanted to stay at this historic landmark hotel and everything exceeded our expectations! The entire staff -- management, front desk, concierge, and cleaning crew -- were very professional, personable, and very helpful! The hotel was immaculate, from the incredibly beautiful lobby, Round Table restaurant, Blue Bar lounge to the lovely guest room and bathroom. If we could have only one more wish for this wonderful place, it would be to bring back the cabaret style entertainment that was featured at the former Oak Room (we certainly understand, however, that this type entertainment doesnt attract patronage like it had in years ago). A stay at the Algonquin Hotel is a truly memorable experience!
Id like to give the Algonquin 1 star for the first night I spent there, and 4 for the second - but Google Reviews is all or nothing so Im giving the first 2 star review of my life. I arrived in NYC after a long delayed flight - and was told that I had room 217 with the nice big bathroom. The room itself was miniature, like many NYC hotel rooms - but what I noticed was that it was also very hot. I used the remote on the wall to turn on the air conditioner. It seemed to be stuck at 64 degrees but seemed much warmer in the room. I was so exhausted I passed out anyway at 10pm, only to wake up at 1 pm in a sweaty heap. It was smoking hot in the room - almost like a sauna, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldnt get the air conditioner on the wall to fire up. After an hour of sweating and messing around with the remote, I was unable to cool the room and went to the front desk. The woman at the front desk insinuated that I just didnt know how to work the air conditioner remote, and when I assured her that I had tried everything she said Well, this IS the oldest hotel in New York. The engineer came up at 2am to try to fix it but could not. At 2:45, exhausted and sweating from every pore, I went back down to the reception to ask them to please move me. I dont have any rooms for you, she said. By then it was so steaming hot in there, there was no way I was sleeping, so I just got up and had a cold shower. They moved me to a MUCH more comfortable room the next night (double the size and with a working thermostat) - but I was surprised when I got the bill at checkout that they hadnt even discounted for the first evening when I basically got zero sleep.
Kind:From the moment I stepped in from the pouring snow/rain that cancelled my flight home, I was well received by the front desk staff and made to feel welcomed as well as valued as a member who gives preference whenever possible to the Marriott Brand. Generous:It was explained to me that the City had recently required a $25/night tax be added to the total bill. I was informed that the hotel was making an effort to create value for that tax and that I had several options to take advantage of each day. I was impressed, to say the least, at this approach and found it very generous of the property. Clean:At the end of the day this is top of mind when you stay at a hotel. The room that I was given was extremely clean and the bathroom especially spotless. This is important to me at any hotel I stay at and even the small details make you realize the care with which the hotel gives its facility. This property has a lot of history (oldest operating hotel in New York) and the property has managed to keep the character in the hotel while making relevant updates that make it a comfortable stay.
My husband and I came to NYC for our Babymoon and decided to stay at this property due to the great location of the hotel and good reviews online. We requested an early check-in and arrived to the hotel at 10 am. Although our room was not available that early, the hotel was able to let us check-in by 12 pm, which we appreciated as check-in is not until 4:00 pm. I mentioned on the reservation we were celebrating our Babymoon and upon check-in no one acknowledged the reason for our trip nor were we upgraded. As an Event Planner and Marriott Rewards Member, I travel often for work and have received more welcoming/warmer greetings from the front desk on business trips than I did at this hotel. Our room was very small, but worked for two guests. The bathroom had hair leftover from a previous guest, which was pretty disgusting, but otherwise the room appeared clean. My husband had cocktails at Blue Bar and said it was one of the best drinks he had in NYC. The service at Blue Bar was subpar, however. The server forgot to ring up my husbands second round, so we had to wait nearly 15-20 minutes for another drink. Overall, our hotel stay was average and the staff provided average service. However, my husband and I would most likely not stay at this hotel again.
I love this hotel. It has that quintessential old New York feel. Room have been updated and bed is very comfortable. Like anywhere in Times Square area, the rooms themselves are quite small - so you must expect that. The breakfast is fabulous and staff very friendly. They even have a cat that hangs out in the lobby
This is the first time staying here. I enjoy historical places, so that aspect is appealing. The rooms are tight even for NYC standards and I could see with two adults, the bathroom is challenging to share. Also, if you are a warm sleeper like I am, request a top sheet for the bed. As a whole though, I have enjoyed my stay.
The charm, history and warmth of the Algonquin Hotel made it the perfect choice for my wife and I on a business trip for 5 days in NYC. Location is great near subway and Grand Central. Lobby is most comfortable, interesting and charming lobby I have enjoyed. While the hotel is older, it has been updated very nicely. Bonvoy recognition is excellent!
A unique and charming hotel with very accommodating staff. I was particularly impressed with housekeeping, who responded to my urgent call from a taxi minutes after checking out. I was missing a diamond stud earring, which had apparently fallen off while I was preparing to vacate the room. Housekeeping checked the room and discovered the earring back on the floor in the room, then traced my steps to outside the elevator, where the earring itself was found. Security then sent it to me by fed ex on the same day, and I am now in possession of my complete set of lovely diamond earrings again. The hotel lobby is very small, and competes with the restaurant and drinks area for space, but that did not pose a problem for us. We enjoyed drinks in that area every evening, and felt comfortable there. Our room was small, including a very small bathroom, but was overall clean and comfortable. All the staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive to any needs. The concierge assisted us with dinner reservations and even arranged for complimentary proseco at the restaurant. They also gave us travel advice regarding the subway, walking directions or taxi recommendations to local destinations. We found nothing of fault at this hotel.
We had a wonderful 4 day stay at the Algonquin hotel. We have stayed at over 20 various hotels in the city, and the Algonquin definitely ranks as one of our favorites. First, the location is perfect. You can easily walk to Times Square, Broadway, 5th Avenue, Grand Central, Rockefeller Center, Macy’s, Bryant Park, and many other popular attractions. It is central, but also on a quieter, not too busy street. Additionally, the hotel lobby and rooms are beautiful. It is a smaller, historic hotel that is very quaint. The staff is very friendly and helpful every step of the way from booking to departure. Finally, we so greatly appreciate your kindness to pets. Our dog has travelled with us to many very upscale locations and the Algonquin gets 10 plus stars for their pet friendliness. We also loved visiting with Hamlet in the lobby...such a wonderful member of the Algonquin team. The Algonquin played a big role in making our visit to NYC one of the best ones yet! We are looking forward to visiting again soon!
Nice staff. The rooms are extremely sketchy though. Not only was the room extremely small but the Window AC units are as loud as a semi truck barreling down the highway. Because of the window AC unit, the seal around the window was insufficient and as such I would be getting wind drafts and leaking around the AC unit all night long. The room smelled very similar to body oder probably because of the gross carpet that likely has not been changed since the hotel was built in the 1920s.But again, staff is very courteous and the resident cat was cute.
The Algonquin Hotel is well appointed with up-scale amenities. Our two-room suite was very comfortable and provided a nice place for relaxing and reading. The recent remodel kept the charm of this iconic hotel but added modern conveniences. No problem finding a place to charge all our devices. My only gripe is that the bathroom -nicely renovated and well appointed - had a bad smell of musty drain. Nothing I tried got rid of it. Overall, I would recommend this hotel to my friends and will consider a return stay.
Very warm and inviting downtown hotel offering a personal touch and attentive staff. No need to leave for food or drink - both are very good on the main level. Relaxing in the lobby is very pleasant. Rooms are small but nicely appointed. And use the hotel black car service - it’s a cut above.
This is my New York home-away-from-home. It is the perfect location for seeing Broadway shows - close enough to walk to theaters but just far enough East to be quiet. My only suggestion is that they solve the room service situation (there is none), and at least offer 24-hour coffee service (without making one use the self-service machine in the lobby). The staff could not be more accommodating - they are like family! Once of the only Times Square hotels that still feels like New York. I dont and will not stay elsewhere.
An icon with long history, an island of tranquility in the midst of Manhattan.Comfortable bar, attentive service, welcoming and competent front desk, cozy, super clean rooms with most comfortable beds.Tip: request a king size room on the top floors as the queen sized ones tend to be on the small side.As a long-term patron I wouldnt dream of staying anywhere else when in the City.Im rating the Algonquin a strong 10.
We have stayed at the Algonquin many times, and it is always a great experience! The location is perfect for what we like to do in NYC. Close to theatre, shopping, great restaurants. The hotel is historic, unique and charming, and also is very comfortable. The rooms are always really clean and have nice comfy beds. The staff is very welcoming and helpful, and we love to sit in the lobby for a beverage or two. The Algonquin is also the home of the famous Matilda-- Queen of Cats and she knows it! Im already looking forward to my next trip to NYC as I will be staying at the Algonquin-- my fav!
Warm, friendly hotel that feels both old and new. Lobby charming, not stuffy. Quiet rooms. Quick access to coffee and dining, with excellent wait staff. Hamlet the attentive cat is a nice touch. Literary ghosts did not make appearance, but seemingly could have. Unbeatable location. Another great Algonquin stay.
I have been staying at The Algonquin Hotel 3-4 times yearly since 2011 and I feel like I am home when I stay there. The hotel is quaint, cozy, beautifully decorated, the staff is friendly and accommodating, the rooms are comfortable, impressed and interested with the historic importance of the property and I love Hamlet the Cat. Looking forward to checking in again for the night on Saturday, March 3rd. FYI, I live 30 miles away from the hotel(45 minute drive either by car or train) which would be convenient enough to commute back and forth for a day/night visit but I always love staying at the hotel. Also, I travelled regularly for business for 15 years and was a diamond level Hyatt member, and because of the extensive travel long that I did I amassed many perks when traveling for leisure, and with all of the beautiful hotels that I have stayed at in the past, whether it was in Europe, Caribbean or in the US, the Algonquin is my favorite.
If you want to visit NYC and do not want to be in a typical cookie cutter hotel, The Algonquin is your perfect choice. The hotel itself is unique and has the feel of a 1940s high end establishment while the room are modern and efficiently laid out and had all the necessary conveniences. Since this was our first trip to the city, we wanted to stay somewhere where we would be centrally located. The Algonquin fit our needs perfectly. The room surprised by because of the size and I should have realized this going in. This is NYC after all. I was slso concerned since I am highly allergic to cats. I had no problem and my husband made a friend. The cat is so cool. . .just like he belonged there. This is probably an odd comment to make but you need to forego the elevator, and take the steps in the hotel. The wrought iron and marble steps take you back to when hotels had class. I have recommended The Algonquin to everyone who has asked us about our trip. We are planning our next visit.
I am stayed in many hotels in NYC over the years. I recently discovered this hotel and I intend to use this hotel exclusively on future trips to NYC. It is a old historic hotel with a great deal of charm. They did a great job in preserving the historic beauty of the hotel while making the hotel comfortable for the guests. The staff was exceptionally friendly. My impression was the staff truly enjoyed working at this unique hotel. In addition, we ate breakfast twice and dinner once at this hotel. Each time, we thought the quality of the food was very good. My wife, daughter and I truly loved this hotel.
My fiance and I absolutely loved the Algonquin Hotel. Its small, personal, historic and friendly and so was its staff and management. We found and the property overall to be spotlessly clean and extremely well maintained and the same could be said for our room. We found the bed to be very comfortable and the neighborhood to very quiet overall. And we even got to meet Hamlet, the Hotels cat. Well definitely be making return visits to the Algonquin...
All in all it was a lovely stay. This is a unique property with a rich history.2 small complaints- I requested extra shampoo and conditioner twice but never received them. The food at lunch was disappointing and overpriced.I would still encourage anyone to stay at this beautiful hotel . Have a drink in the lobby to enjoy the ambience but eat somewhere else.
Return guest that feels like this hotel is home. Have stayed various times over 30 years and have seen subtle changes for good under Marriott manageship. The staff is the number one reason we return. Lobby and restaurant/rooms are updated, well appointed historic architecture not fallen under the need to streamline into a cold modern look. Cozy, historic and class is the ambience. Just one of my favorite hotels that feels like you are coming home. Oh yes and the glamorous Matilda.
We love the Algonquin and no matter how much they modernize it (like the Blue Bar) or make upgrades as long as the lobby, front desk and old elevator remains we will stay there. It is also located next to everything one might need for a NYC visit. While not a fan of the blue bar ambiance the staff takes time to make a cocktail and allow the patrons enjoy a cocktail. The fitness area is a plus and the history which is dotted in New Yorker cartoons throughout the hotel is a special touch. Even though the renovations took place a few years ago, current staff and the Marriott company are still working out the bugs ,therefore it does not receive an excellent rating form us.
A truly exceptional hotel. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The restaurant food is excellent. The decor is beautiful. The location is convenient. The room/bed is comfortable. We make it a point to stay twice per year, and are looking forward to future stays.
Spectacularly elegant and refined, this historic hotel still retains many of the original interior and exterior architectural details. This adds to the feeling of stepping back into a more civilized era, the era of Dorothy Parker and her round table companions. Both the Oak room restaurant and the adjoining blue bar have original and creative entrees and starters- we had an opportunity to speak with Henderson Catlyn, the executive chef who designs and plans menus for both rooms, and every single meal we enjoyed there was incredible. Great cocktails, too.Lovely, tastefully appointed rooms and huge deco style bathrooms did not disappoint, and the original marble stairs and the multitude of mosaic tile detail in the lobby are gorgeous! If youre a cat person, you wont want to miss meeting and petting Hamlet, the resident marmalade cat. He was most definitely a highlight of our stay.Definitely looking forward to a return trip!
I have been traveling for both business and pleasure throughout the US, North and South America and Europe for 30 years and I highly recommend The Algonquin Hotel when visiting NYC. The Algonquin Hotel is a boutique hotel located in the heart of midtown Manhattan(but not in the middle of the frenetic activity-the property is on the quieter part of the neighborhood). The rooms are clean and beautifully decorated, the restaurant and bar are fun with delicious food and beverage choices and the staff is outstanding in every aspect and will meet every need of the most discerning traveler. And finally, if you are a cat lover you will have the honor of meeting Hamlet, the most gracious 4 legged host.
The room was comfortable, elegant, and spotless. The bed was made up with high quality linen. The en-suite was spotless, and delightfully designed. Internet connectivity was excellent. The staff were unfailingly helpful throughout my stay. Breakfast was good, and the free coffee and newspapers in the main lounge a surprise bonus. My only issue was the high weekday cost of rooms, but even so, it is similar to other establishments in the area.I mentioned to one of the bellhop/doorman that the central light in my room was not working. It was fixed by the time I returned to the room after breakfast. The lady Concierge was very helpful with directions to local amenities.I was there for two days. I wish I could have stayed longer.
This an attractive boutique hotel located in mid town Manhattan! Convenient to just about anything you want see or do. Rooms are typical in size in the city, yet nicely appointed, clean and well maintained. The employees at check in were unprofessional, did not meet our special request we made when making our reservation online. We were celebrating our anniversary in NYC and made no mention or acknowledgement though we mentioned it when making our reservation. We requested early check in also and weren’t able to check in till an hour after normal check in time of 3pm, even though we arrived at 11:30am to check in. They didn’t review our Plantinum benefits at check in and were simply handed our keys and told our room number. Other than that experience the hotel was fine.
If you are looking for an exceptional experience stay here. The hotel is full of character and the staff went above and beyond. They continuously worked to make sure our stay was perfect. Any request was handled immediately without question. This is refreshing. The history of the hotel also adds to the ambiance. This is the only place I will stay in NY from now on.
This is my second time staying at the Algonquin and it has become as much of a must for me while in the city as seeing a Broadway show.I have been to New York numerous times, so my trips to the city now are beyond tourist-oriented and more in line with exploring the city on a more personal level. As a Broadway fan, theater is my main purpose for visiting the city usually. But the shopping and dining in New York are beyond compare. The Algonquin is the perfect hotel for me, in the perfect location. It is within close proximity to everything, be it the theater district, world class shopping and dining, or a subway/metro system that can take you anywhere you want to go, in and out of the city. The hotel is a blending of classic charm, infused with modern amenities. A stay here transports you back into the annals of New York history, but does so with elements of the contemporary as well. Its theatrical and literary heritage are an inherent part of the experience. The lobby immediately provides a warm and quiet place to come back to after a day out in the city, and the room that you retire to is equally comfortable and well-appointed.The staff has always been most helpful and accommodating. From the front desk to the bellmen. From the waiters in the restaurant and bar to the room-cleaning staff. They have always been very attentive to their duties.I highly recommend a stay at this historic hotel. And I, too, will be back.
The hotel suite we were in was cute and quaint (and the history lends an unmistakeable charm), but the lack of customer service, uncomfortable beds (unusual for Marriott, in our experience), lack of hot water for a shower, and lack of in-suite amenities such as coffee and a small fridge are deal breakers. For the price, even in the heart of Manhattan, one would expect much better. We have stayed at a number of hotels in Midtown for both work and play, and we have never felt strongly enough to leave a review. Before booking, please read the online reviews. We made the mistake of not reading them before we booked because we loved the history of the hotel and have been wanting to experience it for ourselves; we wanted to love it. Overall, however, we found that the negative reviews were not exaggerated. To be fair, though, the hotel is really cute, and could make a good addition to Marriotts many properties, but it needs some attention - in terms of customer service type training, additions of small, inexpensive amenities, and maintenance (especially plumbing).
We are Marriott Platinum members and continue to feel as though being Platinum is just not appreciated by Marriott. Our stay at the Algonquin was certainly not a positive experience. The air conditioning cut off around 2AM each morning and did not come back on until we requested it be turned back on. On the second evening, we called and demanded maintenance come up immediately and correct the situation which he did. He explained that it cuts off so it does not overheat and catch fire. This hotel surely needs to rethink their AC situation! Comfortable guests should be a requirement. The other thing to know if you stay at this hotel is the bed has a fitted sheet and a duvet cover with no flat sheet. This absolutely grossed us out as we could imagine the duvets are not washed or replaced after each guest. We slept in our clothes the first night so not to have our bodies touch the covers! When we asked the next morning at the front desk, we were told that flat sheets were only provided upon request. This seems absolutely unsanitary and is certainly not something we have experienced at any other Marriott or any hotel chain for that matter. There were a few other minor issues, but they were corrected very quickly. I will say the staff at this hotel were some of the friendliest staff that we have encountered in our travels. The staff at the Round Table restaurant recognized us the second morning and were excited to see us again. They spent time asking us about our plans for the day and were genuinely interested.
My wife, daughter and I were pleasantly surprised by the small intimate quality of the hotel, staff, quiet, and excellent location to all typical tourist needs. We had a small suite and we were left feeling welcome and would return again. We liked the fact there was no room service and void of noisy trays and deliveries late at night to other people. The hotel has charm and history.
I had been wanting to stay at The Algonquin for many years and it did not disappoint. From the moment we entered the hotel, we were treated with amazing service by the staff. We loved Hamlet, the cat, who wouldn’t. We even took the book about him home with us. Our room was perfect and each night we slept soundly on comfy bed. The location of the hotel put us in the center of everything - 5th Avenue, Times Square and the theater district. When we return to NYC, I can’t think of staying any where but The Algonquin. Thank you!
Great hotel and fantastic service from everyone (as usual). Feels like coming home every time I arrive - great welcoming .The only possible fault is the price if breakfast food in the restaurant. $50 for a yoghurt parfait and 2 slices of toast plus orange juice and coffee is very expensive, but this is my only criticism.Otherwise the hotel is really the one to say I’m in Manhattan
Unlike chain hotels, The Algonquin breathes authenticity and history. It’s a time machine. You walk in and are transported to a city that no longer exists and is way more charming than the current one. It feels like Dorothy Parker will walk in anytime. I couldn’t have felt better at this hotel! And it’s not only the vibe. Staff and accommodations were great and the bar, lobby and restaurant were also excellent. Live music of great quality and most of all not too loud!! The Algonquin is a haven in heaven!
Gorgeous hotel with amazing staff! I loved that even through renovations, they have kept the old time feel and decor of the place. We arrived too early to check in so they stored our bags in the bell closet and took down my phone number to call me when our room was ready. Everyone was so friendly and helpful, they even stored our bags again after we checked out so we could see some more sights before we left the city. The location was perfect, while I expected some city noise at night, it was very quiet and I had no problems sleeping. The room was a little small, or cozy, but being in NYC you shouldnt be spending much time in your hotel room aside from sleeping and showering anyhow! I highly recommend The Algonquin Hotel to anyone visiting New York.
My first impressions of the Algonquin are great. The hotel is located in the heart of uptown Manhattan, but is on a relatively quiet portion of 44th West that is right around the corner from Time Square, 30 Rock, and a number of other attractions. The hotel is very quaint, but well appointed and has a great historical feel that starts in the lobby and continues to the rooms. The room was surprisingly large for New York, and was very comfortable. The washroom was a but cramped, but not awful. My one complaint would.be the $50 per-day held on my card for incidentals should I use them (room service, extras, etc). I understand the intention, but Id prefer to be charged at the end in the event I incur extra costs.
I loved returning to the Algonquin post-renovation. It has kept the original lobby and rooms, and the overall FEEL of the old hotel, but with more comfort and modern amenities. The room, bed, bathroom and all amenities were top-notch. We had snacks and drinks in the lobby the afternoon of our stay, and a full breakfast the next morning, both of which were delicious, uniquely homey comfort food, while still being gourmet. Everyone we met from the minute we arrived was very warm and welcoming, informative and efficient. I cant say enough good things about our stay!
I had an overnight in NYC. The hotel was an interesting mix of old and new. Excellent front desk staff and baggage man, Peter. The small rooms were very tight when two persons needed to move around. Close enough to Grand Central Station to pick up dinner to enjoy in our room. That idea was what the front desk suggested to us. Excellent location. The cat was lying above the front desk when I tried to photograph it. The cat didnt want to be potographerd and started to walk around. The bell man moved it back into the corner which is where he/she lives. Wish the price vs value was better aligned.
If you like charming, service-oriented hotels that strive to make your stay as enjoyable as possible stay here.It was a joy to return to the Algonquin each night after a long day at a conference. The hotel staff was accommodating, warm and efficient. They were truly the best part of my visit.I can’t wait to stay there again.
I stayed in this hotel many years ago before it was owned by Marriott. Back then it was so tired, but the history (and location) kept it kicking. Marriott has transformed this property back to its rightful grandeur. The rooms have all the modern luxuries but retain the charm of yesteryear. Keep in mind that this is an old NYC hotel -- the rooms are small. But the King we stayed in was larger than many (e.g., base rooms in Bostons Marriott Long Wharf or Londons Marriott County House). The suite we stayed in was generously sized. The lobby area is simply beautiful and a cozy place to hang out between activities. The charm is accentuated by Matildas successor, Hamlet the house cat. This former feral kitty now lives in the lap of luxury and will sometimes let you pet him. The location, for tourist purposes, is ideal. What sets this hotel above the rest is the staff. Everybody was friendly and helpful. We truly felt like welcomed guests. From housekeeping, to the lobby to the bar, the doormen and reception we were greeted by smiles and friendly words and assistance. Service is this hotels greatest commodity. If youre looking to stay in an oasis in bustling midtown, I highly recommend the Algonquin. I cant wait to return.
Off on and on through the years I have had drinks in the lobby and met friends so I was excited that on this last trip I would be staying at this historic hotel. When we arrived there was water dripping into the lobby by the elevator because the ice maker had broken on the 2nd floor. Seems to me had the staff been paying attention they would have known before it got to that point. There was only one elevator in operation which made for long waits and close quarters with other guests. On Saturday morning when I went down for coffee the elevator now was not operating either. Climbed up the 8 flights with my coffee and when we left a couple of hours later was still not working. A courteous thing to do would have been to post on each floor that the elevator was out of order since as we came downstairs we saw many people waiting. The room was standard NYC, small but expensive. The water pressure for the sink was not much more than a trickle. Location is great and the history impressive but the staffs attention to detail sorely lacking even to not cleaning up a big puddle by the front entrance. I will be back for drinks some time but certainly not to stay.
Went to NYC to see the Outlander windows at Saks, the Tartan Day parade and Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser on Outlander). I was fortunate enough to get a reservation at the Algonquin. Havent stayed there in years but always loved the ambiance of the hotel. The lobby decor has been beautifully updated whilst retaining its original charm. However the rooms and bathrooms have been updated to a very high standard. Sleek, modern with first class toiletries and fluffy towels, my room was as far removed from a chain hotel as an orangutan is from Sam. The staff was extremely accommodating and professional. Cant say enough nice things about my stay and look forward to staying again soon.
The Algonquin Hotel was charming! We loved the personal service we received from the front desk staff and the concierge,Tara. Tara spent lots of time with us, recommended fantastic restaurants (we would have never known about Frankie and Johnnys!), obtained great seats for us for a play, and explained how to ride the subway to the West Village. The decor of the lobby and our room was classic and beautiful, and the comfort and cleanliness of our room was outstanding. We especially loved meeting Matilda and seeing her each day; her magnificent cat tree and house are perfectly integrated into the decor of the front desk. Finally, the hotel location was ideal, with easy access to restaurants, shows, and shopping, and we were impressed and amused by the illustrious history of the hotel as well.
The hotel is beautiful, the staff is great, the suites are spacious and the restaurant is wonderful. The location of the hotel, in midtown, is ideal. The only complaint is that the elevators were being replaced. Only one was functioning the entire stay, and the other was either slow or not functioning at times. Try to stay on a lower floor in case you need to take the stairs. We would definitely stay here again in anticipation of the elevator issues being resolved.
The Algonquin is a first class act from start to finish! Perfect location for going to Broadway shows, or mid-town dining along restaurant row or at theater restaurants like Sardis before your show. The beds are serenely comfortable, the Beekman soaps aromatic and charming, the high quality towels and bed linens reassuring and sublime, and the drinks in the Blue Bar perfectly mixed and presented. Great Manhattan, or try the Dorothy Parker, and then go and gossip with someone. The banana bread waffles for breakfast are also not to be missed. The staff throughout the hotel are friendly, welcoming, knowledgable, and all about service, right down to the house cat Mathilda the Third who reigns in the lobby. There is a real sense of 20th century history here, decorated as it is with New Yorker cartoons everywhere, and Dorothy Parker quotes on every door. The round table still has pride of place in the lobby restaurant too, as a reminder of the hotels legendary literary contribution. For my money and my tastes the Algonquin is the perfect New York hotel.
I visited NYC for the Tartan Day parade and the Algonquin was recommended by the parade website. The location was perfect as the parade started right in front of the hotel. The staff, from the reception desk to the porters to the doormen, was very courteous, respectful, and outgoing. My room was small (expected in NYC) but I never felt confined as I have in other NYC hotels. The fitness center was very nice and I could tell it was not put together haphazardly. The hotel itself is the oldest, continually working hotel in NYC and the ambiance of the hotel exudes this fact. And, if you know anything about this years parade, the Grand Marshall, Sam Heughan from Outlander, was at the hotel along with many of his adoring fans!
We loved staying at The Algonquin Hotel because of its rich history, beautiful lobby, and comfortable rooms. One thing that really stood out to me was how good it smelled inside. The lobby, the hallways and the rooms all had a rich smell that I will never forget. The service was excellent, as well as the food which we thoroughly enjoyed. Great location to everything we wanted to do. We would love to stay there again.
I love it here. It is so cozy and historic. I have been coming back for the last ten years for my birthday weekend. The staff is wonderful. The rooms are a tad small but dont spend time in your room, enjoy the wonderful lobby! And if you are lucky you can see the resident cat!
Special anniversary weekend stay. Booked suite which was ok. Basic problem was lack of staff and poor service. Our children had gift basket with wine sent to suite. Hotel did not acknowledge that it was from our children. Card said from Algonquin staff. No wine opener to open wine. Called front desk for one and was told I would have to go to Blue Bar to borrow one. Went to bar and bartender said I could use it for a few minutes but had to bring it back down to the bar. Was this the only wine opener in the hotel???. No one offered to either bring it to our room or retrieve it. No concierge at hotel to assist with bookings. That evening in Blue Bar could not get waited on at table. Had to go to bar to order drink. Served warm martini in a sherbert glass. Not good.I am a loyal Marriott customer and always stay at Marriott properties when possible. This experience was not what I had hoped for our 50th anniversary weekend.
Our 3 Grandaughters loved the Hotel Pet Cat. His presence gave a sense of being at home. The Hotel Ambiance gave the comfy, cozy feeling of home. An experience of home from the past which was a great experience for our granddaughters and grandson. Contemporary is their world however renaissance decor kept at its excellence, is hard to find! This Hotel is a diamond in the rough of NYC.
No more room service at the Algonquin. Bedroom temperature 60 degrees and Bathroom temperature 90. No service elevator made elevator service for patrons extremely slow and often crowed. One trip had me and two other guests in the elevator with supplies for the kitchen and in another trip it was myself and two other guests with two large laundry baskets of linens being dropped off on various floors. There has to be a better way. Internet service was weak at best in our 807 room. The cheese platter in the Blue bar was good but simple for the $30 price tag. Normally a waiter would explain to you what the cheeses and items are on the board. Ours did not, but it really wasnt necessary because none of the cheeses were unique at all. Finally, after using the Valet when we arrived, upon our departure we were told that we needed to walk to the garage with our luggage because the NYCPD had closed the roads. No one at the front desk seemed overly concerned and a bit disinterested. The Valet Captain was the only one carrying all this burden. My concern was that I had paid for Valet service but was not receiving the full service promised by the hotel. I suggested that some credit should be applied to my bill but the front desk simply shrugged and said they were not responsible for the road closure.
Its special to simply know youre at The Algonquin and part of the history of that hotel. Dont miss the cat - shes pretty snooty, but she has a right to be.Its nice to simply spend a few minutes relaxing in the lobby area. Theres a staff person close by if youd like to order something, but everyone is invited to just sit and enjoy. Lots of cozy seating areas, with tables, make the lobby a good place for a quiet semi-private business meeting as well. The location is wonderful - so handy to everything.
This hotel is very clean, in a great location and has wonderful staff. The hotel is clean..everywhere! This is very important to me because I have stayed in many hotels that appear clean on the surface but you find dust and other signs of negligence in corners or under beds. Not here. The Algonquin is not on beautiful, its been very well kept. The staff are all very friendly, helpful and kind. I would definitely stay again. The rooms are small but all of the hotels in NYC have small rooms so I did not expect anything more (unless you rent a presidential suite). I highly recommend. This is 2 blocks from Times Square, 1 block from 5th Avenue Shopping, steps away from Rockefeller Plaza and loads of other fun activities. Overall great hotel!
Overall a disappointing stay. When I checked in I had to wait until my room was ready. That was okay (I was early) except that they then forgot to tell me when it was ready! Only when, frustrated, I approached the desk and ask what happened did they remember me. The room had been ready for a while. The room (a suite) smelled of disinfectant and that smell never left across my three nights. I wanted to put a bottle of wine, some water and some fruit in the fridge...but there was no fridge. First suite I have ever stayed in without a fridge. There was no corkscrew to open my wine, no wine glass t drink it and no coffee maker. No amenities at all. Not really a suite. And the final bill was lacking. Apparently I got a daily credit for each night. This was set against some Blue Room (bar) charges I incurred. But the final bill showed neither the credits nor the charges that were set against it. The front desk person basically said trust us that you had $100+ of charges that we deducted against your credits! I have never seen that before. The bill really should show all the credits and all the charges for my say and a final amount or balance. A final bill should not involve a trust us! Nothing should be hidden. The suite was otherwise fine, staff were pleasant and the property has character (and history) but there were too many negatives. I am a Marriott Ambassador level traveler (I travel a lot), so I do have a sense of what is an appropriate standard. The Algonquin did not meet that standard. I would not recommend this hotel. Sorry.
Always an Excellent Experience, We Love this Hotel and the Staff is among the Finest In the industry!!! We stay there every time we visit as we travel with our 2 cats of which 1 has special needs .Our arrival and departure is always Flawless with the Very Best bellmen, valet’s,and front desk staff ever taking very good care of us and of Course not to forget the Ultimate Host ...Hamlet !!! John S., Rodrigo and Tyrone in the dining room gets your day off to the Best start with Impeccable breakfast service that you can’t help but have a Great day! Very helpful and caring housekeeping staff making you comfortable. Peter,Kevin,Scott,Fresia,Edwin among others went out of their way to make made sure we had a Great city excursion and the Best 5 day stay.... Thanks one and all for a job Well Done!
Location is always huge in choosing a hotel in NYC and this will never disappoint. If you want to be close to Times square, the theatres, sites, fine dining and shopping you can hardly do better than this iconic hotel that stands as part of the history of NY. I stay here because as one who attends musicals, Lerner and Lowe wrote the classic My Fair Lady here. As a woman who frequently travels solo, The Algonquin was the first to allow women to stay here unaccompanied by a male. Pretty groundbreaking. As a musician and lover of music it is special to walk into the hotel where Harry Connick Jr. and Diana Krall got a start. The mayor would lunch here regularly, the staff has been here for years and knows this hotel and you can tell also cherishes it. They have a Hotel cat and have had one since the 1930s. Matilda has her annual birthday party and cat fashion show in early August each year and raises thousands of dollars for local Pet charities. So just choosing this hotel adds you to the tapestry of its history. The Lobby takes you back in time but is present day beautiful. The rooms are tastefully furnished and comfortable. It is truly my favorite.
I loved the history and uniqueness of this hotel. I loved that a cat named Hamlet hangs out in the lobby. The cat also sent a gift to my room, which was unexpected. My room was well-decorated and delightful. My only criticism is that I experienced very loud construction noise all night during my stay in January 2018. It wasn’t really the hotel’s fault, because the construction was not in the hotel. I would just recommend that you ask someone at check-in which rooms are furthest from the construction noise.
This place is perfect for a trip to NYC! Conveniently located near Times Square, Theater District, shopping, dining, Bryant Park. Its a cool, non-chain hotel with the charm of yesteryear but updated to the standards of today. The lobby is beautiful and inviting, and the rooms are also very attractive, very clean, and very comfortable. I love stopping in the lobby for a cocktail or a coffee! The staff is gracious and accommodating, and we return as often as we can to stay. We will be back to stay again at the Algonquin as soon as we can! This hotel always meets my expectations!
Our stay at the Algonquin was incredible. From the friendly staff at check-in and throughout our stay, we were met with smiling faces and willingness to help that was so welcoming. The property is also beautiful with cozy rooms and a warm, inviting lobby. The location was perfect, close to many of the sites everyone wants to experience. From site seeing to shopping, it was an awesome experience and we will definitely stay here again when in NYC.
This beautiful quaint hotel is only 12 stories. I love that. I get a street view room so I can absorb the whole NYC experience. I love the 114 year old marble steps that lead from the lobby to the rest rooms on the basement level. You should see the black painted handrails of the staircases on the guest rooms floors. The carpets are black, gold and red. Stunning as you walk to your room. Old doors, crown mouldings, sophistication. Meticulously maintained. We know that hotel so well that we recognized the Blue Bar in a recent Tom Hanks movie. They filmed a scene there. Outstanding hotel. If I could live there, I would
The location is great — close to Broadway shows, subway, and loads of restaurants. It has an old-school charm that definitely feels like Old New York. That said, the rooms (while well appointed) are exceptionally tiny. The bathrooms are similarly sized like a cough-drop box; the toilet paper roll hung just over the seat which is...uncomfortable. If I need another hotel in Midtown, I may consider it again, but it’s definitely NOT my first choice.
A truly historic property with a legendary literary pedigree. Great Lobby in which to conduct business discussions. The Blue Bar is excellent as well. Rooms are small but comfortable. Great updated bathroom / shower, with the best water pressure! Proximity to Bryant Park, 5th Ave, Times Square and the subway is excellent. They need to bring back the original Blue Bar from years ago... which was tiny, but a true NY gem.
So far very disappointed. Hotel was highly recommended by a few friends and family members. We arrived last night and I’m very unimpressed. The walls are extremely thin and we have very noisy neighbors, the whole night we heard doors slamming from the hallway and people playing what sounded like basketball in the room above us. The windows don’t crack open if you want a little fresh air and the air conditioner is just as noisy as everything else in the hotel. We attempted to sit down and have a few drinks at the bar before bed. The bar here closes at 1:00 am on Saturdays we walked in at 12:00 and every time I asked the bar tender if we could order he said hang on 2 minutes then walked away. When he finally approached us 20 minutes later he said “okay what do you want it’s last call” tried to charge us over 60$ for a house vodka and soda water and a glass of white wine so we just left. Without letting us see a drink menu I’m not sure if those prices were just made up in his head or if that’s standard here. The lady at the front desk was very nice when we checked in and that’s about the only reason I’m giving this place two stars instead of one. Hopefully tonight will be a little quieter and the staff a little friendlier, but at a first glance this place is not what’s it’s cracked up to be.
This hotel is unique in that it is an old hotel with a lot of character. It is my understanding that it may be the oldest hotel in the city. Service from check in through departure was excellent. The food in both restaurants was excellent as was the service. The rooms are a bit small but comfortable and clean. In some areas the hotel is dated. They are currently going through an elevator renewal project however I enjoyed walking up and down the stairs as the stairwell is actually an open staircase like you would find in a large home. A very different and comfortable experience. Something you should try at least once. Close to 5th avenue in the heart of times square.
Wonderful stay at the hotel. Oldest in the city and it is very charming. Unfortunately one of the elevators was out of service which was a little tricky Aust certain times during the day. Also, if youre looking for a regular size hotel room, this one may not be your first choice. The rooms are small, but thats what I expect for a boutique hotel. Very nicely decorated and very new bathrooms. Overall great stay with location close to Broadway and times square

2022-06-22Hotel staff was awesome! Particularly Nick, Maria, the bellman, and another front desk person but I cant remember his name. Nearly everyone we interacted with was so pleasant. My husband and I had just gone through a disaster of a trip for what was meant to be our honeymoon and ended up stuck in NY. We booked this hotel randomly on the Marriott app because it was near times square and looked nice. I briefly explained the situation on the chat service and they gave us a complimentary upgrade to a king room. After experiencing a terrible 48 hours with the JFK airport, that simple act of kindness felt so nice. We also received breakfast vouchers and I am so happy because they served some awesome food in the restaurant. I had no idea the story behind the cat at this hotel but this made it all the better because I absolutely love cats. The staff also gave us great tips and suggestions for things to do on our impromptu visit to the city. I would definitely recommend this location to anyone looking to stay near times square and I would definitely want to stay again.

2022-01-08This is a cute boutique hotel. The rooms are clean and the entire place smells great. Rooms are small but cozy. The bathrooms are pretty good, with all the standard vanity products. You get complementary water every day and the rooms are being cleaned every day. The lobby is beautiful, the staff is professional and helpful. However I have to rate it with 3 stars because the hotel is (at the time of our visit) not serving any food and drinks. This is temporary, because the ownership has changed and the hotel is waiting for the liquor license. However, this was never mentioned on the website and we are paying the full price. My stay is significantly less enjoyable due to this. Also, theres no gym available. If the lobby wasnt as beautiful, I wouldnt be so sad that I cant get a drink/ breakfast in the hotel.

2022-04-14Oh my I just love this hotel in the heart of New York City right off Times square. I was lucky enough to be upgraded to the Dorothy Parker suite it was quite luxurious but also extremely vintage and authentic. While I was there, the hotel bar was not open for business, however the staff had no problem with us sitting there with our own booze and having a lovely party, not too loud of course. Plus there is a very handsome hotel cat. Truly I dont know what else you can expect out of a New York City hotel. I was charmed.

2022-02-20Great location and best hotel staff around. The check in agent was welcoming, quick and friendly. Especially for us arriving at 2am. The lobby has had a makeover. New furniture and paint while keeping the classic boutique aesthetic. Rooms are cozy and showers are modern. Bonus points for having a cat at the front desk.

2022-06-06Our stay was amazing. Clean. Beautiful. Historically significant. This is a superb option in a city that gives you an overwhelming number of choices. The staff was fantastic. The food and drinks were some of the best we experienced in the city. And of course, Hamlet made an appearance that made my day.

2022-04-12We had an amazing stay here! Due to a flight cancellation, we arrived 24 hours later than expected. We contacted the hotel and they let us cancel one night without penalty. Our bags were also sent to a different airport. They arrived at the hotel before we did, and they sent it up to our room so they would be waiting. This made a stressful travel delay that much easier for us.The staff at the hotel were very warm and welcoming. They were always ready to give us tips on where to go, had umbrellas waiting for us, would call a cab if we needed, anything. I would go back just do to how nice the staff were!Fun facts - the hotel is known for having a cat, currently Hamlet the VIII, who is always ready for love and attention.

2022-06-22Service, staff, the entire experience was spectacular. The amenities were over the top. The staff went out of their way to make me happy. The bed was so comfortable, best nights sleep I’ve had in a hotel. The restaurant menu was amazing. Loved the fish tacos, and the burger was beyond great. And the fully stocked bar is incomparable. They had everything you can imagine.I can’t rave enough about Rodney, the bartender. He really made me feel like I was being treated special, although I’m sure he treats all of his customers that way. What a great person. He made me feel like I was in his living room. The Algonquin is lucky to have him,as well as they are to have Anthony, Jason and Alana! The general manager ,Willis Loughead is the consummate professional on every level. What a team this is!

2022-05-02Really sad about whats happened here. All character of this once charming hotel is gone. Now just tired with no soul. The staff are excellent but that where it ended. No in room coffee making, only horrible from concentrate (folders yuck) coffee machine in lobby. No food or bar service. At $400+ a night could at least provide decent coffee. The room is dreary, smelly and bed very uncomfortable. We will not stay here again. There are too many other choices to put up with this level of contempt of paying customers.

2021-12-21Back in NYC. This time, for the most perfect Christmas in New York - thanks to the Algonquin. From the time you arrive, you are greeted with courtesy, care, and a CAT. My goodness - the attention to detail at this hotel is second to none. The front desk is organized, attentive, and friendly. We were treated like celebrities from the moment we entered the building. Our room was clean, well-appointed, and extremely comfortable. And the hotel and the location... just a dream come true. Weve always wanted to stay at the legendary Algonquin - and now that were here, we have no regrets. This legendary place is living up to its everything it is known for. Come for the cat, stay for the excellence. Thank you Algonquin! We will be back!
