The Avalon Hotel in New York
Stayed at the Avalon hotel during the holidays. The room was quite pricey, but that was expected since it was the busy season. Unfortunately, we had a really bad experience with this hotel. It took a few hours for the front desk staff to have our room ready. When we got to the room, it wasn’t what was shown on their website. We attempted to get a different room, but nothing was available. The attitude of the staff there was quite upsetting. As a business owner, I expect my employees to operate in a way that makes the customer feel appreciated and if there are concerns, those concerns should be addressed by the staff without being disrespectful. This was not the case at the Avalon hotel. The continental breakfast was a joke. Literally a few pieces of fruit, stale bread, and cereal. Even the holiday inn offers waffles or pancakes or even eggs- not this place. They charge almost $20/pp for VERY limited snacks. There is no restaurant or bar. No real close restaurants unless you like cheap, fast, no so great Korean food.Having your luggage tagged or retrieving your luggage takes a good 30-45 minutes. Forget about getting your car from valet in a timely fashion. This hotel also seems to charge extra for just about everything. My bill was nearly doubled because of “hidden fees”. Normally I’m good with finding these things, but this trip was a little last minute and I just didn’t have the time to really investigate. Bad move by me.Overall, this place was a huge disappointment. I’ve stayed in everything from a Quality Inn to the Mandarin Oriental in NYC. Avalon hotel was one of the worse stays I’ve had.
I get the feeling that the hotel business is highly competitive in midtown Manhattan. And, to be fair, Ive never stayed overnight in NYC until this weekend so I have nothing to compare it to, but The Avalon is a five star hotel in my book. The property is very clean and luxurious, but the friendliness of the staff makes it non-intimidating for country rubes like us.My only trouble with it was from some noisy neighbors at 3am, (city that never sleeps, right?) but that is outside the hotels control.Next time we travel to New York well look to stay in this little piece of the Big Apple first.
We stayed at junior suite. The room was very spacious which is hard to find in Manhattan. The water pressure was good and the A/C worked so well. The sofa bed is big enough to sleep two people but it is not that comfortable. Better to reserve a room with two queen beds. The hotel is close to the Korean town , empire state building and the Macy so plenty of foot traffic at late night as well. Overall I am very satisfied.
The check in process was quick and easy. The staff was very helpful and professional. The room was clean and quite spacious considering the location. The included breakfast is nice but lacks a wide range of warm options. Perfect fit for a long weekend visiting the city.
While the pictures of the hotel rooms look nice on the website, the reality is the only rooms that look like that are the king suites, and the rooms are very run down. The hotel overall is very dated, and the standard double bed rooms are extensively worn down, and dirty. The furniture, mirrors, floors and all wood work are very beat up and chipping and a few pieces are broken. The headboard literally fell off of the wall in the middle of the night while I was sleeping during my prior stay. The entire room needs a thorough cleaning and new coat of paint. The curtains in my room were brown and showed stains of dark spots throughout each panel. While the lobby area is nice, and the room is very large, I would prefer little conveniences like in-room coffee, a hairdryer that works, and a clean feeling space instead. It is an inexpensive hotel, so its certainly an option if youre looking for something on a tight budget, however Ive stayed at other hotels in midtown for a similar rate and would prefer them.
Wonderful stay in a clean and well thought out room. The staff was thoughtful and customer oriented. Maressa at the front was even spot on with directions and ideas. My favorite? The toilet paper was mounted next to the facility and not on the sink vanity like so many places want to do. Clean and updated. Worth a look for NY.
Excellent hotel with an excellent location. Going off season, my girlfriend and I paid $130/night for a junior suite which was way more than we needed. Two double beds, a living area and a huge bathroom. The rooms were clean and the staff were very friendly. We were able to store our luggage before and after our stay with no issue. Free coffee and hot chocolate in the lobby were an added benefit.Location was excellent, a short walk to many interesting places to see. Located in Korea town, make sure you try some of the local bakeries for tasty desserts!
Nice atmosphere. Really close to herald square but pretty quiet once you get in. Theres a library seating area and the same classy look throughout the hotel. Elevators are a little small and take a while to go between the floors during primary check in and out times but overall not bad.
Compared to the Hotel Pennsylvania this place is a palace! I had a lovely stay here and the room was clean and spacious. Food was good and staff friendly. I would certainly book again. Some minor wear was noticed but I would rather give them 5 starts than 4. Well done and thanks for saving my holiday after spending one night in the Hotel Pennsylvania.
This was the third time staying at this hotel and we were again pleased with it. The location is great about a 5 minute walk from the Empire State Building. It is clean and the staff were very friendly and polite giving excellent directions and recommendations. This is our preferred hotel in NYC.
We booked a Junior Suite in November last year for our February stay through TravelZoo. The room was very big (for NYC) with two beds and a little sitting area. Everything was clean, the beds were reasonably comfortable, and it was very quiet. The service was friendly, and professional. Apparently, there is a resort fee thats being charged as of January 2017, but when we asked about it, stating it wasnt in any of the fine print off our prepaid booking, they took it off since we booked in November 2016. We were only there for one night, but it was a good experience.
The location was very nice. Close to k-twon and a lot of restaurants nearby. The rooms were very big for a Manhattan hotel. Very big bed, decent sized closet, huge bathroom and tub big enough to fit 2 people without it feeling too cramped. Tv has a decent size and had a little desk to work on. Free hot chocolate and coffee in the lobby and overall a very nice night.
I was looking for a reasonable hotel with a reasonable price for a weekend in Manhattan, nothing special - until I found this place. This hotel exceeded all my expectations, and turned out to be more special than I could believe. (this is going to be a long post of compliments)In short : more than amazing, careful and friendly staff that will help you with *everything*, beautiful hotel, spacious and comfortable rooms and add to that the great location. Not in short :It all started when we appeared 8 hours before the check in (7 oclock) and after a little thought - the clurk just gave us an early check in and saved us (and cost him) 75$ because we arrived early in the morning after a long flight. After that, I came back to my room welcomed by a surprise birthday cake and balloons, that my boyfriend managed to arrange only with the hotels staffs help before we arrived. And the final story - we didnt reserve a room for the night because we were supposed to fly to LA and we thought we could made it awake until the end of the night. But we were sleepwalking around 9pm so we thought to reserve a room and get a little sleep before we leave. Not only the clurk recommended us not to because of the high prices (fashion week) he helped us find better options! How kind can you be??Thats all from me, I really hope my recommendation will help you to understand that this is the best hotel in NYC (:
For the price we paid, we were not impressed with the room. We asked for a room facing the street of Manhattan and didnt get it. They said they were full. Which we knew they werent. The hard wood floors of the room were broken. They charged 16.95 per person to eat breakfast! For the price you pay to stay here you should accommodate your visitors and give them breakfast! The staff not helpful at all. Dont book with them.
Wonderful Stay We had a great room, extremely clean and beds very comfortable. Highly recommendable to anyone. However, Don’t get the breakfast price cause it’s not worth it. Save the money and go out to one of the great small restaurants around the city that offer very good food for decent prices.
Attention Smokers: This hotel has smoking rooms. This is an excellent hotel in a quiet location but close to Times Square and the Empire State Building. Above average service and cleanliness, too. Rooms are large and mattresses are not old. Book this hotel for a great NYC experience, it is worth it.
This hotel is amazing. The staff was very friendly and were helpful with all of our questions. The room was big especially for NYC. For my wife and I it was perfect because it wasnt too big of a hotel and the location was perfect. We will stay here every time we visit because of how wonderful of time we had here.
We visited NYC July 15 and stayed at the AvalonIt was the first time I used an online booking. I cannot say enough great things about this place. Perfect setting location and staff. The staff were above average and treated my kids (7 and 12) like princesses. We cant wait to return. It was worth every penny. The rooms were exactly like the website. Thank you for making our vacation great
My wife and I are currently staying here for our honeymoon. We don’t have much time so a quick getaway to the city is our chance to enjoy or post nuptuals. We arrive to our suite ready and excited only to find a repair man fixing the tv. The manager Chris is very nice and accommodated us to an even better room and a bottle of bubbly (that’s why it’s 2 stars not 1). We have a kitchen in this room, it happened to be filled with the last people’s food. The room has no ac and the room temp is a staggering 80 degrees. We have windows open and old school fans blowing air around. We were told that house keeping with come before 3pm, but when we got back from shopping at 2:40 they had not been here. After some complaining they finally arrived now at 3:30. This is our only full day at the hotel. We had a whole day planned which has now been put on hold. We are sitting here feeling very awkward with the maid is cleaning. Nice place to look at, but definitely not the place for special occasions if you’re looking for vip treatment. Hec at this point we’d settle for basic treatment.
Two thumb down for this place. Five of us stayed at this Hotel a few weeks ago and had a horrible experience. First we were put in a room that had roaches. When we complained, they upgraded our room and to be honest, the roach room was better than the upgrade. The tile in our room was coming up causing me to trip over it. This place doesnt have their own parking. We paid $45 per night for a third party parking garage. When we got home we noticed an additional $20 charge Avalon gave us for who knows what! This place will nickel and dime you and when you complain about it, they will pull out the old well you signed the contract. Horrible! horrible! horrible place! We will not be back

2018-09-22Wonderful experience!Management and staff are very friendly and accommodating.Rooms are very nice and inviting considering the size. Come on, how many other hotels do you know of that have two TVs?... In the same room!We had a blast. I did take exception of the elevators as you have to just be patient and wait. Other than that, thumbs up. Thanks everyone.

2019-07-28Room, location and service were great. Comfy beds. The family suite was spacious with great large bathroom. The gym was sufficient. However, breakfast left much to be desired. You had to search hard to find a clean bowl. Not a lot of food options, mediocre fruit and coffee, and only one type of milk. Also, elevators were painfully slow.

2020-03-04The location is perfect because central of Manhattan and close to several metro stations. Beside this the service is amazing. The workers were really attentive and reactive to our feedbacks. Definitively a plus. However some rooms are not yet renewed (still a bit old fashion) and the facilities within the renewed room should be better look after.

2019-08-15We are very pleased with the hotel staff. The reception staff are very polite and helpful with special mention to Mr Sergio n Mr Abby. They are very friendly and my son loves them both for attending to his silly demands. God bless them. Also the location of the hotel is excellent with great eating and shopping places nearby while being close to subways too. Rooms are quite spacious. The only complain is very small breakfast spread. Sparing that... Our stay at Avalon was memorable.

2019-06-08When youre upgraded to their largest suite, its really hard to say anything bad. The room was fabulous, and this makes it very hard to stay at other hotels in NYC and not compare it to the Avalon. The huge bathtub was amazing to soak in after a long day spent around the city. The bed was super comfortable. And the staff were so friendly, polite, and helpful.

2018-10-01At first they gave us a room on the 3rd floor (which I wouldn’t recommend, because being so close to the street, it can sometimes be noisy), and we had some issues with the sofa bed and with the restaurant next to us in which when they were cooking, literally the smell came directly into the room. That’s why we asked, if possible, to be moved to an upper level. One of the managers heard our complaint and very kindly arranged a room at the 12th floor, with an awesome street view and 2 king size beds, a living area, and a bathroom third times the size as the old one. We didn’t pay for breakfast, but I think that in the price there are 2 included, and we were 3. It’s located very central, 2 minutes away from the Empire State Building, very close to the metro station and good restaurants. Everyone there was very helpful with everything and they tried their best to make our holiday a perfect experience.

2017-12-26The location was fantastic, do close to the Empire State building and all subway stations, making it an extremely convenient location. At night the Korean restaurants around the hotel are a delicious, inviting smell. The rooms and bathrooms are aged but very clean and function perfectly fine. We were delighted by the free hot cocoa/tea/coffee as we had a winter stay and it was chilly outside. We were welcomed each time we entered the lobby by friendly and awesome employees. Overall I would give this hotel an 11/10 stars. Magnificent all around.

2017-12-06From the moment we checked-in we knew we were on the receiving end of world-class service. The check-in process was smooth and efficient and they were able to store our luggage early so we could explore NYC. The room was clean, spacious and very well decorated. The attendant, when called, was always very helpful and provided exemplary customer service. The location of the hotel allowed us to explore much of the surrounding area by foot and cab, which was a huge benefit for our trip. We would not hesitant to stay at the Avalon again or recommend this hotel to anyone looking to travel to NYC. Thank you for the outstanding service and the wonderful hospitality.

2019-01-13I first came to this hotel Christmas 2016, loved the hotel but had a few issues which were resolved, as I loved the hotel and so did my children I decided to stay here again Christmas 2018. Initially I was booked with another hotel for the 1st nights and then here. I cancelled the hotel and came straight to the Avalon for the full duration. I was very very disappointed. The lift worked for 2 days and then did not work for 7 days, lifts already small so it was chaos. I was on 9th floor and have a disability so could not walk up. The lifts still did not work!!! It was almost no one cared. Then the coffee machine did not work for the duration of my stay!!! The breakfast was OK very European, the staff (man with bald head) I found him very rude towards me. My children were ill so I asked front desk if I could take breakfast to my room and they advised absolutely. So I went to get the breakfast for 3 people. Asked the staff if I could borrow the tray to put food including hot drinks in tray. He smirked and said absolutely not and to take it all in my hands. As only 1 lift worked it was awful to get lift and when in cane it was full. I had no choice and took breakfast as much I could bearing in mind my right arm has nerve damage so already weak, the lift came and was full but I could get in, the woman did not hold it open so I had to put my arm to allow me to get in, I scolded my hand with hot coffee. Then my TV REMOTE was not working, engineer looked and agreed issues but did not know what to do. Also the sofa bed was terrible and could feel it was worn out when sleeping, again I brought this to staffs attention and asked if they could change or add a layer of something however nothing was done t was done With all this the hotel did absolutely nothing apart from give me a few days tax back. I had a nightmare with the hotel and unsure if I would like to go back. The positive is in a great location. I did bring all the issues to hotels front desk and was let down. There are other hotels in this area which I feel would be better like the MARTINIQUE NEW YORK. I feel the hotel could have done a lot more to rectify this, they were aware of my health issues as I went to see a consultant at the hospital but she hotel did nothing to accommodate. Such a shame!!!!

2019-03-07They were excellent. Very good customer service. Clean and spacious. I am only giving 4 stars cause we got the only suite with a kitchen and did that for a reason. But there was no dishes, utensils, cookware, nothing but empty cabinets. Other than that, it was fantastic and reasonably priced for NY.
