The Big Cheese in other cities:
So grateful this place is 5 mins from my house. The food is so tasty and beautiful. I usually get a platter of things from the deli case and they serve it with a delicious salad and slices of focaccia bread drizzled in olive oil I believe. The people are friendly and very helpful and it’s fun to poke around the clothing and shoes for sale in the back while the food is prepared. Always a perfect stop!
Great place to eat and shop. There is a menu of sandwiches, wraps, create your own salad, a deli display of various foods you can choose from. Refrigerated local cheeses and other single items for purchase. Clothing, shoes and other interesting things for sale as well. Friendly and attentive service from staff. Definitely check out The Big Cheese.
I dont know if this place has recently changed ownership, or just overhauled their business model. But my recent visit left me shocked.Until recently, the big cheese has been a go-to for previously owned and vintage clothing, as well as a well curated selection of cheese and other Delectables.Imagine my surprise, when visiting recently and discovering that the familiar clutter of clothing was gone, and that the business was now offering a selection of hot dishes and sandwiches. To be fair, The baklava looked delicious. The staff was friendly and courteous. I did not simple any of their dishes while I was there, because I had it only stopped in to browse their vintage clothes.Clearly that didnt work out.I checked their website, and it states that they were closed for renovations. I can only assume they were were referring to the transition in business models.Im hopeful that in coming days their website will be updated to reflect their new offerings, and maybe a brief explanation of the recent changes.Overall, it looks like the new business its going to be an asset to the rosendale community, but I think they need to work on their communication and marketing a bit to re-establish themselves with the greater public.
First time checking this place out. I guess its newly remodeled on the inside I thought it was cute. There was all sorts of food out. The spanakopita and the big chocolate peanut cookies looked so good! I just got a breakfast sandwich to go. 2 eggs and cheese and I added avocado. I got it pretty quickly, it was very good. I really liked the bread it was on. I gave 4 stars because I felt it was a little over priced for an egg sandwich.. especially without any meat on it.. but overall it was very good and Id get the sandwich again but its not going to be my go to breakfast sandwich place.
A great comfy spot, especially on a Sunday fall morning. They are very dog friendly. If there is no water outside for dogs, they want you to let them know. They bring it right out. The food is delicious and great coffee. My fiance always has a blast looking at the thrift items in the back.
Not so friendly woman who I believe is the owner along with her male counterpart. He, who was kind enough to reheat my cold coffee served from a thermos was a tad nicer. Food took forever...luckily it was a #sundayfunday. Great atmosphere tho. Country store vibe with the usual over priced jams & cheeses.
Our experience at the big cheese wasn’t awesome :( it took a VERY long time to get a cup of coffee (about 20 minutes) because there was a couple in front of us who ordered sandwiches. I’m not sure why it dragged the entire staff, the order didn’t seem big- but it would have been overlooked if the coffee I got wasn’t cold and extremely bitter. The cheese selection and pastry options looked amazing. Just a bit slow and a bad cup of joe.
I used to frequent the Big Cheese on a regular basis. I especially loved the Israeli Eggs. Then I got a different job and didnt drive by there anymore. I happened to be in the area recently and stopped for the Israeli Eggs. Big disappointment. They no longer serve it with olives and eggplant and that was part of what I really enjoyed. A lot of variety on my plate that I didnt get anywhere else. If they went back to the original dish I would go out of my way to stop there and spend time in the shops in Rosendale now that Im retired.
What really killed it for me was the use of styrofoam plates and bowls. I am strongly against the use of styfroam in reguardss to the planet and they used styrofoam and disposable plastic ware , which was completely unnecessary for a sit down, eat in experience. The food was rather simple and bland and the service was a bit lack luster, but for a quick bite it was a pleasant experience.
Theres nothing like ordering some excellent food and then shopping for vintage clothes in the back of the store while you wait. Its a great, casual meeting place in the center of town with WiFi, and many laptoppers appreciate the opportunity to leave their home offices for awhile.
They have a vintage section in the back I highly recommend perusing this area while awaiting your cheese etc. There is also the Soiled Dove down the street if your vintage need extends past the selection here its a little less...... organized and you best be in the mood for a conversation.

2021-09-10This place is a supported by a mixed new age, spiritual, vintage clothes, health food, hippie and local hangout market and it works. Nice staff tend to a warm and welcome space. Industrial and artsy back seating area with shade umbrellas. Good kombucha, lots of cheese and homemade halvah. Very sweet ginger turmeric lattes and good capuccinos and cookies! Definitely a Rosendale landmark.

2022-01-09This is one of our family’s favorite places to eat. I’ve been coming here for over a decade and the falafel wrap is unmatched to anything in this area. If you are reading this review to decide whether or not to come here, I have one message for you. Come.

2021-10-17Excellent food , fresh , warm and with a nice presentation. Gluten free and vegan options were quality hearty choices. Staff was in constant motion making maximum use of limited space for so many products, services and customers flowing in from two directions. I went on a Sunday. Will return mid week to linger and enjoy vintage items on offer while having tea.
