The Bishop in other cities:
We have eaten here twice and each time the food and service exceeded our expectations. The menu is unique and does not disappoint. It gets really boring to go to so many different places that offer the same menu options. The entrees were fantastic but all the little details from the Moms spaghetti to the homemade red pepper ketchup made our experience amazing from start to finish.
The Bishop reopened with an all new menu recently and its AMAZING! Ive been there several times and have multiple different starters, entrees and desserts and havent been let down any of them. They also serve brunch though I havent had the opportunity to try that out just yet.
Pretty place! Went for brunch. Cold and burnt hashbrowns, hard to figure that out. I got the chicken fried steak, it too was just a hair shy of the coating being burnt as well. The gravy that accompanied was delicious! Eggs were cooked over medium, as I requested. Very good. The bloody Mary was good too, I felt it didnt pack the punch that a brunch bloody Mary should. Bit weak for 13 bucks. The people working couldnt have been more friendly, I like that.
The food was outstanding! When a place touts that they’re known for bourbon and beef, you expect those things to deliver. And they did! We both enjoyed our steaks and the bourbon drinks were great too. If you’re a fan of French onion soup, this was one of the best I have ever had!
I am not sure if the chef was having an off night or someone hide the spices, but things were lacking flavor. If you have rosemary chicken, you should taste the rosemary, but nope, not even a hint and 2 of us ordered it at the table. The bread was burnt and so was a couple pieces of the chicken. The french onion soup was pretty much a bowl of onions, maybe 2 spoon fulls of broth and a slight sprinkle of cheese. The service was just ok, waited a while for things, not even once were we asked how things were. Very disappointed.
Was my 1st time here. Service was very good. The server was polite and very helpful. The dining area was nice and clean. Very nice looking bar that you could sit at. The food was very good that I had. I had the smash burger. Others in the party said the food was very good as well. The Bish-up looked very good.
The service was terrible we waited well over 2 hours for our food, our water was room temperature, the waitress was clearly incapable of keeping up w service, we were a party of 7 2 of the 7 people were served 20 minutes before the rest of the party, we will not be returning
After to try make a reservation through the website that was rejected by email, we called and get a table for 4.We expend 30 minutes waiting for 2 appetizers and them 1 more hour for the food to be served. We are talking about a menu with 4 options, and takes an hour for the food to be served.... in general, the food was good, but the waiting time was crazy.
Can’t say enough about this incredible treasure in downtown Albany! The service was top notch, all of the servers were personable, most accommodating and very knowledgeable about the menu. The appetizers were large in portion and beyond delicious. Our table ordered 4 different entrees and we shared a little of everything! The scallop plate and the lamb chops entrees were well beyond 5 stars as well as the salmon. It really is a wonderful opportunity to experience fine dining in a casual and comfortable environment. Great job Scott!
So, Ive been let down by the bishop.Their staff is amazing.. they did apologize over and over again for the wait, the manager even took the incentive to talk w me and my company about it. That in its self is very very rare.BUT... the food! I was so disappointed by the french onion soup! Ive been waiting for so long to try their soup and it was just.. not the worst, but it just wasnt the best either. Also, sadly.. the burger.. 16 bucks for it and it just was greasy. They were out of half the menu too. I just, I was let down from the overall experience.Great staff though, that really impressed me
I was super excited to finally try The Bishop. I was happy I read reviews before I made a reservation because previous reviews said that it took awhile to get food was very accurate. And I would highly recommend reservations since this is a very small place. My friend and I quickly put in our drink order in, but it took awhile to get our beers - I saw them sitting at the bar for a little while. Both my friend and I ordered the french onion soup since we heard that it was pretty amazing. I thought the soup was pretty good although my friend said that her soup wasnt really warm. We had to wait about 30 minutes for the soup. I also ordered the smash burger which was very disappointing. The two patties werent as smashed as one would expect and honestly, it was very bland, seemed to be no seasoning. Also, our waiter never checked in on us the whole night. I had to get his attention in order to get the check. The whole experience was a bit disappointing. I did go on a night when there was a show at the TU so I can understand that service might not have been the best, so I would try the place again on maybe a quieter night. However, there arent many places to eat in downtown before a show so I feel like The Bishop still needs to deliver on quality.
The food was good and so was the customer service. It got pretty busy after my group walked in, and our waitress never forgot about us. We also needed menu modifications due to dietary restrictions and it wasnt a problem at all. Ill definitely go back next time Im in the area.
5 stars all around! Came in for lunch, we split the clams casino appetizer—amazing. I had the southern fried chicken sandwich (which is HUGE) hubby had the smoke duck breast. Food was outstanding, ambience and service was A+! Great job guys, can’t wait to go back again :)
Great place! We had the French onion soup to start. I had the smash Burger which was awesome!! My wife had the southern country fried chicken sandwich which she said was delicious. Shoestring fries were fantastic as well. Huge selection of bourbon and beer. Superb service to boot!
They are definitely off to a good start. When we were there, it was incredibly busy and the service was slow, but they were still working out the kinks. The menu is exiting and creative, the food was delicious. The renovation of the space was fantastic; it looks wonderful in there.
I think this may be my new favorite place to go on a Friday after work. The staff was friendly and accommodating. My girlfriend I had the duck breast, it was tender and Delicious. The Dessert More Please! 😋. Great place, wonderful environment and atmosphere. I will definitely be back. Thank you for the great service and food😊
Brunch was good and decently priced. The egg sandwich was greasy, but delicious. The chicken and waffles were also very good, but we wished they had pure maple syrup. Our server was kind and friendly, but we waited for our food for about an hour and were disappointed to hear that they ran out of mimosa ingredients on a Sunday afternoon. Overall, we would return to the Bishop-but there are still some opening kinks to work out.
Everything we ate was fresh and delicious. The medium hot wings were really good but the homemade Maytag blue cheese dip was amazing. The duck fat fries were on point, crispy and salty on the outside, mushy on the inside. The burger was great. The tri tip steak salad is one of the best deals in Albany. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and the fingerling potatoes were a nice touch. I have to admit, I dipped my steak in the leftover blue cheese dip and was richly rewarded.
To be fair I didn’t want to give a specific star rating. Tonight was a rough night for The Bishop - it was really busy because there was a concert downtown at the TU. We arrived at 5 - waitress/hostess were extremely nice and attentive. She took our drink orders and the cocktails were amazing. We waited about 45 mins and then our waitress came back to check on us and said she was going to go check on our food. The oven apparently broke and they were really behind on orders. Things happen and for the most part they handled it as well as they could. Our drinks were comped and the waitress was extremely apologetic. It wasn’t her fault however. The only thing I didn’t understand was why they contributed to seat people or why the manager didn’t come out and make an announcement. A lot of people left angry and I think a statement from manage my wound have gone a long way. Instead the poor waitresses were left to deal with having to make explanations and irate customers.I’m looking forward to giving them another chance as the menu looks amazing and I was really looking forward to my meal.
The food here was amazing, as I would expect from their head chef. For me, it was the duck breast that came out perfectly done with amazingly rich flavors. My friend had the clams and pasta, that worked beautifully with the corn and mushroom that were included. Overall, the food was what I expected and more.My only real complaint is with how slow it took for the food to come after ordering. I cant really fault a restaurant that is new for this though as Im sure they are still working out the kinks in their service, especially when arriving just when it started to get busy. I hope that gets figured out soon, and I plan to visit many more times in the future. My new favorite restaurant in downtown Albany.
Had high expectations for this place. It came highly recommended, decor is beautiful, and hostess was friendly. But the server was awful and rude. The table was placed in a location right in the path of bar traffic so it kept getting bumped and having things fall off it. And the food came out missing multiple ingredients from the dish. I told the server and he didn’t care, instead bringing out a cup of mayo for some reason. Definitely would not go back and do not recommend.
I dont leave many reviews, but I felt this newer restaurant deserved one.The food we ordered was great. The service was great. The hostesses and waitress were attentive and kind. I enjoyed the atmosphere and overall feel of The Bishop. The prices were standard for the area. I would reccomend to a friend and I will be returning to try their new winter menu.
The place has potential but major service issues to work out. First, we were told to seat ourselves. Not a problem but a restaurant of this caliber should have a hostess to handle this. Our first interaction with a waitress was to tell us that they were out of OJ and Champagne...at brunch. I was looking forward to one or two $3 mimosas and definitely not looking forward to a $13 Bloody Mary. The next interaction was to tell us that the food would be delayed due to a party of 7 ordering right before us. The restaurant was only 1/3 full so clearly the kitchen is understaffed. It ended up taking 45 minutes to get our food. When we got our food, it was ok. The chicken and waffles was hot but a little soggy. The “maple syrup” was the fake stuff. For a restaurant of this caliber, I expect real maple syrup. My wife’s sandwich was good but the home fries were soggy and reheated. The people at the table next to us arrived and ordered before us but got up and left after an hour of waiting for food. The large party next to us commented loudly that they were “douchebags” for leaving...they knew the owner so had a clear bias but it certainly takes away from the ambiance of a restaurant when things like this happen. Again, I’d come back once they work out their kitchen wait times and have OJ/champagne in stock for brunch!
We went to The Bishop for the first time this evening. It was a very quiet post-Covid dining night. For drinks I had the Bishop Blossom and the Mi Amiga Picante, both delicious and refreshing, and and my husband was impressed by their craft beer selection. We were given something called Moms Spaghetti ( Eminem reference I assume) which was deep fried spaghetti with garlic and parmesan, weird concept but shockingly tasty, compliments of the chef. We started with the fried brussel sprouts with bacon (delicious), then ordered the strip steak, with Au Poivre sauce, and beats along with the seared Scallops. Both the scallops and steak were cooked to perfection and accompanied by delicious and complimentary sauces. We were given some blueberry slushie again compliments of the chef at the end and that was perfect for a hot evening. Overall it was very well done and quality food!
So sorry to write this review. We must have been there on a bad night. The food wasnt what we expected. My husbands steak was full of fat with a huge bone and pungent tasting. The steak was on top of shoestring fries with peppercorn sauce(the sauce was excellent!). The fries were hard as a rock.French onion soup was sweet and spicey which is fine but dont call it French onion because it wasnt. Shrimp and chicken scampi, full of lemon. The chicken in it was tasteless and had no color. The shoe string fries served with my beat burger were cold. My beatburger was okay, nothing great. Completely fell out of my bun on the first bite. Our server was very nice but waited a very long time for service. The inside of the restaurant is really nice. I just hope it was a super bad night. Its always nice to have a new place to go. I wish them luck!
Where do I start?! The Bishop is amazing, from ambience to dessert! Everyone in our group is stuffed! We tried so many things! Such a delectable array of tasty drinks! The appetizers, presentation and taste, perfect! I got the Lion’s Den, just the right blend of sweet and sour. Delicious clams, sauces that are awesome, shrimp and grits, beef tartare... each taste was better than the taste before! We barely had room for the meal, but we had to try more! Clams with mushroom pasta and polenta with scallops! Yum! And we were plenty happy stopping there, but you guessed it, we had to try dessert! Lemon creme brûlée cooked to perfection! The Bishop is amazing! Can’t wait to go back!
Went on a Saturday night, it was busy took about 50 mins to get our food service came once or twice. The burger was very over cooked and I had asked for some things not on it and they were on it. I was overall disappointed with the hype instagram was about this place. I would not return for the fact that it took 50 mins to make 4 burgers. Better luck at 5 guys
This place is going to be the new “It” place in town. Definitely stands to the promise of reviews I had read before. Went there last evening. To start with I would recommend making reservations before hand if party of 4 or more is planning for a dinner because it gets busy fast just coz it’s “good”. The staff was courteous/very friendly/welcoming with smiles on their faces. They were super accommodating to postpone our reservation by 30 mins upon request. Place has a very nice mix of formal/casual decor. Very modern. Great ambience. Didn’t sit at the bar but looks very well organized and inviting to try drinks at the bar.Now the food—— to start with drinks. I’m a whiskey/bourbon/scotch kinda guy. Love making and trying cocktails. I got bourbon based cocktail. It was to the point. Loved it. Great mix of perfection. My friend got vodka peach based cocktail and she loved it too. They have tons of options for whiskeys. Whiskey/Bourbon lovers delight. Not a beer drinker but the menu had many options of craft/tap/sour/bottled beers.FOOD- albany downtown needed this place. Everything we got we devoured. Size of appetizers is slightly on smaller side but perfect for the price. I don’t eat clams but my friends are huge clams eaters and they were raving about the clams they had here. Beef tartare with egg yolk- “heaven”.Entree - again size of entrees is in the smaller side but perfect for the price. I got “scallop and nut”, my friends got “salmon and radish” and “roasted duck breast”. I loved my dish. Polenta was perfectly creamy and scallops were pan roasted to perfection. I love duck and have tried at many places. It’s so easy to overcook and mess up the duck. It was Cooked to perfection here. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Didn’t try the salmon but my friend said “it was ok”.Presentation of all the food items and even drinks was at par with high end/fine dining restaurants.Things to improve- I think the service of actually entree was little slower but won’t hold it against them. The place was busy and we ordered different kinds of entrees. Cooking them to perfection and delivering all at the same time would be a challenge for any experienced chef/staff in a busy and booming restaurant. Service for the drinks/appetizers was fast.Would definitely go back for drinks at the bar, to try their brunch menu and dinners again. Thankful to have have great option in the city!!!

2022-07-10My wife & I were in town for a wedding and The Bishop was highly recommended by the hotel we stayed at. They have an incredulous whiskey selection and their crafted libations are just as noteworthy (spicy margarita was great). We ordered the Brussels sprouts & chicken fried steak fingers to start. Followed that up with the smashed burger & my wife had the beet salad. Matt & the staff were very hospitable & provided a great dining experience. Consider it a must stop!

2022-01-30The Bishop, firstly, is a great local spot with an interesting menu that is sure to satisfy your palate. It just so happens to be Bourbon themed with a great list of them! The staff is always friendly, the atmosphere is always relaxed and it is well spaced.

2020-08-30My fiance and I went here for drinks and food last night. I ordered the crab cake appetizer and he got the pork appetizer special. The flavor of my crab cakes was amazing, and the way they were made was very different (but in a good way). They were sandwiched between these crunchy wafery biscuit things. And the plating was gorgeous. Only thing I think is that they could have been a little bigger for $13. My fiance said his appetizer was delicious and it was a good size too (it was $9). Cocktails were amazing and some of the best in the Albany area I think and were accurately priced ($11-$13). Their dessert was out of this world. Rice pudding was made with aroborio rice which was very good and their bread pudding was in a skillet and the best Ive had in a while. Waitstaff is extremely friendly and good, and the chef came out to our table which is a huge plus in my book.We will definitely be back!

2022-02-25Came into Albany on a Sunday and this was one of the only places open. Lucky for us it had excellent food, waitstaff, and overall vibe. Bottomless mimosas and Cheladas were on deck to accompany the great food. We brought our 3 kids and the owner made a point to come talk to them. Great experience and we will make a return trip to Albany just to go here.

2022-05-10If I could negative stars I would and only because of misinformation. Me and my husband were looking for a nice place to eat. We called the bishop to ask if reservation was needed. She asked us for when we said we will be there in less than 10 mins. The lady replied no and that we can come in. We get there and immediately asked if we had a reservation. And then turned away for no reservation. So if your gonna go there make sure you have a reservation

2022-04-16The owner is awesome and makes up for whatever you think is lacking. The best Manhattan in Albany! Amazing truffle fries and cheesecakes.

2022-03-19Over 45 minutes to receive appetizer (singular)... eventually the antres came out after nearly 2 hour wait. We were literally just about to flag down the wait staff and leave when they finally did come out. Horrible service all around, but the food and cocktails were good when they finally did come out. Absolutely will not come back again.
