Love the hour and fifteen minutes ride on the waters from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson, especially during sunset. Service is usually on time, but this last time they were ten minutes late, which they made of for it by going faster. Go to the top level for a nice breeze and spectacular views.
I appreciate that this ferry service exists, but it could use some real improvement. Primarily the prices are too steep. I drive a subcompact vehicle and it costs me, another passenger and my vehicle nearly $200 total for a same day round trip voyage. That’s seriously expensive. Furthermore, when attempting to book for the following month, you can’t until the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry staff update their system & website. Even if you call you’re still unable to book a May 1st trip on April 18th like I attempted today.
Well this was a non-starter.I went to the website to get a ticket. The website navigation was bad to begin with. Then, they didnt have the option to select motorcycle tickets, even though they have them listed as an option on a separate page. Then I tried to call the 888 number they have, and all I got on that call was a bunch of ads for senior citizens. So I guess Im not taking the ferry because apparently the company doesnt want me to buy a ticket.
I use them for business purposes. After a long day delivering to Long Island, it is very nice to put my big rig on the boat to get back to CT so I can rest instead of dealing with the traffic on the way back. The staff and crew are always very accommodating to me. They go out of their way to fit my very large truck on their boat. I always appreciate the effort.
We love taking the ferry from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson. Its a beautiful ride and quick way to travel. The staff are helpful. Would be nice if they offered healthier food on the ferry but you can bring your own. Often, you can find a table and play card games or other activities with your kids to pass the time.
Dingy, dirty, dated. Get some vendors on there selling flowers, and other gifts, high quality sunglasses, branded fleeces, hats and gloves with the ferry company logo would be one idea. Most people travel for vacation to see friends and family. Lots of people who want to make last-minute purchases, especially when its cold and we need to be out of our cars. Instead of being faced with high quality options like what you would get in Port Jefferson, you instead are faced with a dated bar with an ornery bartender. Everythings covered in a layer of grime. Nothing has been serviced in years, or at least it looks that way certainly nothing has been updated and there are stains and broken things. The womens bathrooms are an embarrassment. For the price of a round trip ticket and the amount of money that this company is raking in, the vendors should be top quality. The food should be top quality. The bartender should look and act like they care. The food service staff should look and act like they care. The ferry can be a destination experience all its own. Instead its like a metal prison that reeks of weeks old fryer oil.
It was a beautiful day just to take a ride. It was my grandchildrens 1st time. They loved it. The prices for snacks a little over the top. Bottle water $3.10 French Fries $5.00. We stopped at McDonalds before we got on. All and all it was something to do on a Saturday kids 12 and under ride for free.
I recently had a trying experience.Waiting on line at the ferry terminal and I could not get my car out of park. Multiple employees tried to help. Finally a police officer was able to temporarily fix the issue. Got on the next ferry and staff could not be more accommodating .Horrible experience was rectified by the kind staff. Five stars!
I really hate doing this but I have to give a negative review here. We have taken this ferry multiple times, in excess of forty by a fast count, and its usually uneventful. Over the last few years however, the service has really gone downhill. From a hit or miss of whether the onboard concession staff will be completely obnoxious, to a few of the deck crew guiding vehicles being downright verbally abusive, past the point of confrontational. I understand that dealing with the public can be challenging, and that covid has made it more difficult, however: If you have employees that are incapable of handling those stress factors they should work elsewhere. Now dont get me wrong, there are still some really nice people working there, but they are becoming scarce and it shouldnt be a roll of the dice as to whether or not a ferry trip will be tolerable. There is more than one ferry from Long Island to New England and in the future we will take Orient Point as often as we can. Its a shame that the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat Company seems to have little interest, or control, over how its employees treat the customer.
Dont think Ill ever drive from Stamford/ Greenwich area around the I-95 loop into Long Island, or take the bridge from Conn. into LI, ever again, when I need to go anywhere from Garden City east to Montauk.Havent taken the Bridgeport Connecticut, to Port Jefferson, L.I., NY, Ferry in about 31 years, so was pleasantly surprised at how easy, safe, comfortable, inexpensive, and pleasant crossing the sound in about 45 minutes is, compared to the alternative drives or train rides. Car and driver with passengers very moderately priced given the alternatives. Makes a day trip or biz meeting achievable for mid-LI to East LI locations from Conn.If you havent taken it recently, go do it.So great to be 30 to 60 minutes from 70% of the population of LI east of the 5 Boroughs, from Port Jefferson, and 20 to 60 minutes from 60% of the most modern and active business and shopping districts in central and western Connecticut, from Bridgeport, with a 45 avg. minutes relaxing crossing the sound sanity break for your soul, in between.
The service was fast even tho I was 2 minutes late . A group of old retired army looking dudes in the lot guide you into the right parking spot with absolute precision. Every detail it’s well thought through . You feel like you are going on a Long trip cross the ocean because of the details.the bathrooms are very clean . Way cleaner than many restaurants. The staff in the boat is very friendly.the temperature is confortable even tho it was very cold outside.the whole boat is clean even the Parking spaces.the food was good, warm and fresh.the staff at the food court was very attentive and friendly. It’s definitely the best way to head back to CT . You avoid mayor traffic time wise it might be better also. But I did find it expensive. They need to work on the price . Would highly recommend. If you are going back and forth to CT that’s definitely the best option.
This was my 1st time taking the ferry to Port Jefferson. The price was $60 for me and my car. The trip took an hour and then another 15 minutes to get off the ferry. It was a really nice Sunny warm day and I did enjoy sitting on the top deck overlooking the view as I returned to Long Island.
Sometimes all you can do is wonder why the large SUV with car top carrier was squeezed under ramp while the car behind it, a small crossover, was loaded down the middle. The ferry was only about half full -- it wasnt a space issue on a busy weekend. This picture was taken after Thursday 12:45 ferry left Port Jefferson.Other than that, I find the ferry to be an ideal way to cross the Sound as opposed to driving west to Queens to cross the Throgs Neck in order to travel north east to New England.
They company needs to work on a better plan with the stand by cars instead of not putting in order of when they purchase their tickets. We were told to park in the last row to be the second car when we noticed they had cars come in after us park in the row before us and of course they got on and we didn’t and was told sorry I wasn’t here when you came and the guy that directed you left.
Always efficient and easy. However, next time, be sure to post on your website about detouring due to parade on Main Street. Also phone staff should not be argumentative about that information being on the website, when it clearly was not. Then they hung up on us when they went to check website. Despite being one block from terminal, we were detoured over 30 minutes and missed our ferry. Staff allowed us onto next one. Phone staff did however tell us we would be charged $25 change fee. We were not. They did hold our original ferry for 8 minutes but wasnt sufficient for us to make it.
My nice peaceful ferry ride is no longer. You are now forced to get out of your car and go up to the deck. I used to use this car time to nap or do some work. No more. No peace for the weary with anything to do with Long Island. I love people banging on my windows and forcing me to share Covid germs with all on board. The crossing fee keeps going up and up. The concession bar and alcohol bar is off the charts expensive. You need to claim bankruptcy by the time the crossing is over. If you have sick kids or a sleeping baby you can forget staying in your car and relaxing. You have to drag everyone to the upper deck. It just doesnt pay any more to take this ferry with all its hassles. I live in Nassau County and the traffic getting to Port Jeff has gotten worse. On a cold winters day I would rather be in my car sitting in traffic on 95 than being forced to roam the boat. When its crowded and cold or rainy there will be no place to sit. Just standing and Covid virus to breath in. Done with the Port Jeff Ferry.
Took the ferry from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson with wife and daughter as walk-ons. Only negative was no onsite parking available. Had to park on street a quarter-mile away. They said a shuttle to pick us up but didnt happen. Walked to ferry. Loved the trip over L.I. Sound, there and back. Good but expensive meal at Danfords, then cruised the shops. Port Jeff is very nice, Bridgeport terminal area is ugly with no shops or restaurants.
Yesterday my mother and my niece went to take the ferry, my niece is 12 years old and because my niece is a well-developed child this lady that works for the ferry was yelling at my mother urging her to get out of her vehicle and buy my niece a ticket for an adult even though my mom told her that she was 12. We Already purchased a child ticket and we were already asked how old that child was and we told them 12 going to turn 13 in December they did not have a problem with it but this one lady just kept coming back to my mothers car slamming her hands on her vehicle urging her to get out of the vehicle or she will kick her out if she did not buy a ticket for an adult for this child my mother was so embarrassed it brought my mother to tears this behavior is unacceptable no employees should be treating any customer like this Especially when the customer is a senior and a child shame on you guys for allowing this behavior to continue
So let me get this straight... passengers can no longer stay in their cars while traveling on the ferry. We are forced to go upstairs no matter how crowded it is (the 10am ferry was sold out this morning) and try to find a seat while attempting to stay 6’ apart from one another (signage is everywhere in the seating area). There are not enough seats to do that! Parents with small children couldn’t find seats. They had to ask people if it was “ok” to break the rules and sit next to them. The staff told us we only had to wear masks while standing. Sitting shoulder to shoulder we were permitted to take off our masks! Do you see the irony in this? Your “rules” are impossible to uphold and make no sense! Allowing people to stay in their cars would allow the passengers in the seating cabin to remain socially distant. I’m a regular passenger. I ride almost every weekend but these new rules are making me rethink that. They make an announcement every ride that “our comfort and safety are your #1 priority”. That is ringing hollow at this point.
When you want to go from LI to CT..its the best..no bridge traffic..Sea voyage..A cocktail..Get off and youre right at route 8 or 95..Very convenient for me.. Might take SLIGHTLY longer or the same time but well worth the cost..when you consider bridge is $15.00 its a no brainer..
This place might be the most beautiful scene in Suffolk county. You can see the sunset from here and it’s a vision to die for. Over the summer, the palm trees of Danfords make the place look majestic. The string lights right next to the ferry docking station is another beautiful scene.
What a GREAT way to get to/from Connecticut ! Trips take just over an hour , and save you from using gas , complaining about road conditions, and theres a galley on board if you get hungry . In nice weather , theres plenty of outdoor seating on the upper deck behind the wheelhouse .The crew is fully trained to get your vehicle on board safely and securely , and then you get to enjoy the trip .
From Pt. Jeff to Bpt 3PM June 30. 5 seniors in our group. At least 6 place booths being occupied by one person. One woman spread out over 3 seat reading. A man alone pecking at his cell phone entire trip. Three more of the same. Plenty of single and 2 person places available. I think this behavior is rude, selfish and inconsiderate. I asked a crew person in the Authorized Only room to address this situation. He did not. No crew people in the passenger area.
Great ferry service. Did not need to make reservations which was a huge plus as it was last minute decision to get back to CT. Cost more than bridge but time saving for me was worth it. Ride was quick.Weather being better would have loved to sit outside. Will definitely take again
One of our favorite place to hang out. The Danfords pier is always with live music and lots of people. Makes it very festive. Nice to just relax under the gazebo and watch the ferry come in and leave. If youd like to go to Bridgeport for a ride and come back you only pay one way because you dont get off. The bar is open and you can get food. Nice relaxing place to be.
I take the ferry every week and purchase a vehicle ticket for the sole purpose of not having to be around people during covid and now this delta variant but now due to regulation changes everyone must get out of their vehicles. The cabin was packed and hot and to my surprise the outdoor section had even more people in the pitch black dark of night. Why are there no lights on the top of the ship? Also- the port Jeff crew is not very pleasant. No complaints about the Bridgeport side of things. However, I will save myself the money and no longer drive on if I have to get out anyways. Bummed
The ferry service is fun, especially during the summer when you could go up on the deck. Great bar you can sit and have a drink, or eat at the cafeteria which serves standard burgers and fries. Even bagels and coffee for breakfast during the morning hours. I use them less frequently these days since they now charge a fee if you dont have a reservation in advance which is annoying. I used to just spontaneously take it on a whim if traffic to Connecticut was horrendous. Also, the price has significantly gone up for a car plus driver over the past few years. If you just want to walk on its still affordable, 18 bucks I think. They do offer a senior citizen discount. If you do have a reservation you have to arrive 30 minutes before, and the ferry time is about 1 hour 15 minutes. Then you got to wait to get off the ferry, which can take up to 15 minutes while you wait for them to direct all the cars in front of you off the ferry. Add up the time, and it actually takes longer to get across the sound if there is no traffic driving around. So great option if you feel too lazy to drive around, but if the traffic is reasonable on 95 it is both cheaper and faster to make the drive.
I love this ferry. They are always on time, and service is great. You drive right on the boat and youre allowed to stay in the car on this ferry. The boat is clean and pet friendly. You just cant bring your pet into the food areas. Bathrooms are fairly clean. Dont leave your lights on in the boat, the ferry service doesnt have a jump box or jumper cables. I give it 4 stars due to the price gouging in their food. The food quality is cheap and not worth the price you pay for it. I always recommend you bring your own food. They do have a bar, which Im sure the price if alcohol jumps there too only cause youre on a boat. The ferry Transit time is 1 hour from port to port and is a very scenic and enjoyable ride.
We r not to run r cars when you r on the ferry. Well about 5 to 6 cars were running with ac going. The fumes were crazy. I called reservations they said the would email the manager. For 1.5 hrs not 1 deck hand showed up down there to check on our safety!!!! Otherwise it was a really nice voyage. I kept my face in the window fumes were bad!!!!
In the past I have used the ferry often, but this was the first time since the start of covid 19. I was very upset to see that there was no enforcement of mask wearing inside the cabin. I spent most of my ride outside, but it got cold and I went to sit inside. There were many passengers without masks including a group of 5 men talking loudly, another man sleeping, snoring across many seats without a mask. There was also an employee behind the food bar who was not wearing a mask without regard to the several elderly people sitting inside! I was hoping to be feel safe to continue taking the ferry across to visit my son because of the convenience, but will now chose to take the ride around to CT. I was very disappointed!!
Who ever runs this is living in the Stone Age , why aren’t people able to just swipe a card and get on, it’s ridiculous. Also everyone’s concerned about COVID but yet they make you get out of your car and force you to mingle upstairs with a bunch of people without masks . They say the coast guard rules “people can’t sit in their car “ why? It’s so dumb!
I had to make a trip to Long Island and this day I chose to take the Ferry instead of the long drive around on the LIE. I arrived early and was pretty much first in line, as the shore team guides you where to park so you can drive upon the ferry. Once boarding time came, they work like a finely honed machine to get all the cars aboard efficiently and safely. Once parked you can stay inside your car, or go upstairs where they have a restaurant, bar, restrooms, TVs, and other amenities. Or you can go to the top deck and just enjoy the view and the boat-ride. The whole process might take a bit longer than the actual drive around, (depending upon traffic) but the stress level is IMMENSELY better as youre relaxing on a boat, and not a white-knuckled drive in bumper to bumper traffic. This is definitely the most preferred way to get to Eastern Long Island and back.
Recent developments have changed the service and made things much more difficult. I am a walk-on passenger. The ferry service has ended their lease on the only parking lot for the ferry. Currently they are doing construction and many of the parking spots on the street that are normally available are now and not available. Honestly Im not sure how walk on passengers are even being accommodated. Something needs to change.
Make reservations for a car- it is expensive, but convenient. Walk on are easy. Senior citizen discount, efficiently run, sometimes delays due to Sunday driving water traffic. I like to walk on, there is a parking lot there. Staff are helpful and efficient. I enjoy the one hour fifteen minute ride in summer. Theres a top deck which is open, and a middle deck enclosed. The deck below is for cars. If you are traveling across in a car, you may get out and stretch your legs, and even enjoy the top deck on a sunny day. Its an excellent service.
Ive been taking this ferry for many many years. originally from LI now living in CT. Very convenient and always a relaxing ride across the sound, better than driving around. Its getting more expensive to ride this ferry though. Clean, professional staff, always on time
Well we drove to Long Island in the morning there was so much traffic. Had the L I E closed at many on ramps. So we took the ferry back from Port Jeff & it was so much better. Port Jeff is a cool place to hang out at. The ride was perfect . The sun was starting to set it was warm out it & only took an hour. Would definitely recommend taking it instead of driving.
Since going digital with the tickets for a while now its made such a big difference in making it an easier experience. Easy to buy ahead and scan or on the spot. Staff is efficient. Food is not great but youre on a transportation ferry after all so you eat on it more out of desperation than choice. Definitely a great way to get to Port Jefferson.
6/13/20 crossing: I really would like to see the crew who determines where we park to take into consideration drivers needing to get out during the crossing when they jam your driver side just inches from the walls. Not everyone can or should have to climb over seats to get out.11/31/20: once again jammed up against the wall struggling to get out of the car. With less than 15 cars on the ferry for this crossing, why the need to put cars so close to the wall it makes it difficult for the driver to get out? I even told the guy I needed to get out of the car. Didnt matter. Not everyone is as agile as the crew. Please remember, the ferry is a convenience, not a necessity.
I used the ferry to go to CT. for my annual fall trek. The porters were wonderful, helping me the 2 suitcases. They were kinda surprised, I tipped them. W arrived 1.5 hours. Both Ports safe, clean, & efficient. I worked in Bpt , many years ago. Nice to see a great comeback.
Of course there is no competition, but still there are a few things that could be improved: cars are squeezed in so close people have to really squeeze by; solo passengers take up booths for 4 with no Captain’s mate to suggest they move to a singles table; rest rooms mostly clean with hot water, but no seat covers or sanitizers; unclear rates on website—we weren’t sure whether charges for cars allowed more than one occupant for the fee. Otherwise a pleasant, efficient hour and a half sail.
I love this Ferry as I’ve been coming here for years. Hands down great service and great people! One thing that does bother me, is that every table on the side with four seats always has only ONE person sitting in them. I think there should be a rule that you have to have 2+ people in a group to sit in one. If not, they shouldn’t be permitted to sit there. I’m only saying this because I am in a family with 3+ people, and we’re always forced to sit in the middle where there aren’t big tables, or much room. So my recommendation is that there should be a rule that there has to be 2+ people in a group to sit at a side table.
Make reservations in advance. Can do express first on first off for extra money. My local friend told me to get there an hour early for the 5:15 ferry. I got there at 4:05 and got on the 4:15 ferry, excellent! Ride about an hour and 10 minutes. Excellent to take a car ferry to avoid Queens and NYC traffic. Easy on tointerstate 9 when exiting at Bridgeport. No rush hour traffic.
Love taking the ferry! Each time i come on the ferries i purchase my tickets online drive up an hour before and drive right onto the ferry. Food is surprisingly good and a great and relaxing way to travel the LI sound. Every time i go up to New England i always take this ferry, can be a little expensive depending on how many people in your car, although right now kids under age 12 ride free :) beats driving through the boroughs of NYC.

2022-03-25Nice to ride in the summertime. Some of the other reviews by frequent ferry goers have a good perspective. I don’t always have the best experience on the ferry, and some of the evening staff are rude. But, for better or worse that hasn’t stopped me from using it. Sunset and sunrise rides are especially enjoyable.

2021-09-08Had a beautiful, sunny day for a ride across the sound. $33.00 for round-trip. Not a bad price, at all. Also, when you park in their lot, they have a shuttle that takes you to the boat and will take you back to the car when you come back - free of charge. We only went about a block & a half, but we did tip. It is, after all, a free service and everyone is working for a living.

2022-06-06Very tasty shrimp, lobster roll and fish and chips. My wife said the fish was very light and sweet. She loved it. The lobster roll is served cold with mayo, or butter or both.

2021-09-25Great alternative to driving back and forth to Long Island. The ferry provides a relaxing one hour ride across the sound. It has a cocktail bar, food and snacks.

2021-09-11Nice experience. Food and drinks kind of high. The boats have a bar for alcohol and they have a nice selection but its also kind of pricey. They have booths with outlets that are cleaned after every trip. Many people also bring their pets.

2022-05-17I was very impressed with the efficiency of the ferry. Cars were directed to various lanes, told when to drive onto the ferry, and then directed to drive off. Being able to sit either on top with a gorgeous view or inside one of the restaurant areas was just a great experience. The cost in 2022 is $66 for a car and driver; an extra $21 for each passenger over 12. Rates and times vary, so you must check the website for times and reservations. Plan on getting there 30-45 minutes before sailing in order to get a good spot in line.

2022-03-28I love the ferry! The boats run on schedule all the time, the crew does a great job directing drivers during loading and unloading, and its comfortable with tables, power outlets, food and drinks. When the weather permits you are afforded a great view of Long Island while relaxing topside. Safe, affordable, comfortable.

2022-03-19Love this Ferry! I take it all the time! One of my favorite parts of this ferry is you used to be able to remain in your car for the duration of ride. But then they stopped this practice. They brought it back during COVID and I am hoping they bring it back completely. 1hr 15min across between Port Jefferson Long island and Bridgeport CT. No better way to travel.

2022-06-20Had the best experience on PTBarnum 6:00 ferry last night from Bridgeport. Your Parking Engineers are amazing. I was the next to last car on and am so appreciative of your skilled maneuvering. First in fitting my car on, and then helping me to maneuver it , after parked, so I could open door and get out. THANKS again for your thoughtfulness and smiles.
