The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel in New York
We were so fortunate to get to stay here during my recovery time from surgery at lenox hill hospital. So close to the hospital lovely daily eating and shopping near bye and I cant say enough good about the hotel staff! You get treated like royalty regardless of who you are. If you can make the effort and stay at the carlyle!carlyle
I stayed at the Carlyle for about a month and a half and Ricardo T was so helpful and wonderful. He greeted me every morning When I would come downstairs and he would bring me up anything I needed. This hotel made me feel so appreciative and made me feel like I was the only guest I would recommend this hotel to everybody I love the staff the location and the amenities.
I might claim to be a bit of a connoisseur of hotels. For business, and for pleasure, I have stayed in quite a number of them, over the years and around the world. The Carlyle is unparalleled.Service, quality of the staff, and the general ambiance are reflective of a spirit of old New York that has virtually disappeared from the rest of the city. On any given night, a visit to Bemelmans Bar Will give you the opportunity to, if your wits do not desert you, have a conversation with broad ranges of world travelers who also find the ambiance of both the bar, and the hotel itself, entirely congenial. If I could recommend it more highly I would do so. Long story short - run dont walk. A glorious evening may await.
We recently stayed at The Carlyle for three nights and had a wonderful experience. The hotel was extremely busy with the holiday season, but the entire staff were all so professional and courteous. This hotel truly embodies all the best of New York from the past. We have traveled extensively and have stayed at many 5-star hotels around the world, but every detail of The Carlyle is perfection. Lovely and personalized hotel rooms, room service, concierge service, bellman, elevator operators, front desk team - all excellent. For those who appreciate the arts, you will love The Carlyle. From the wall murals at Bemelmans Bar to the wonderful art collection in Dowlings dining room, and even the carefully selected art for each suite will be much appreciated. We have stayed at The Peninsula, The Lowell, and other very fine hotels in New York in the past, but The Carlyle will be our go to henceforth. We also greatly appreciated the COVID safety measures The Carlyle has put in place. By requiring a vaccine card with ID for each guest, once you are in the hotel you can feel very safe and just relax and enjoy. We also appreciate that room service hasnt been compromised due to COVID. Thank you.
I decided to spend a relaxing evening at the Carlyle watching TV.for nearly $700/night. But the TV didnt work (faulty remote which the engineer decided not to replace until his second visit).. When the TV was made workable, the TV was were blurry. I never saw that blurry effect on any other TV. Finally I called the front desk and asked the supervisor, Ms Lorena Olizandesa, for a reduction in my room rate and she responded with stony silence, No help there. .So my advice is no tot be fooled because this is an iconic hotel (JFK and Truman slept here; Woody Allen played the clarinet here, Once I saw Tony Bennet in Bemelmans Bar, Bill Murray made a TV special here). Make sure the TV and thermostat work before you let the bell-person leave, It was for me a sad experience as I always idealized this hotel which is only a few blocks from home where I live and use the same TV server (Spectrum) which always delivered working TV service,
This review is for the online gift card option. The MOST RIDICULOUS experience I’ve had trying to purchase a gift for someone. I ordered the card on September 20 at 5am. Was charged $30 for fed-ex shipping. By 9/24, my friends hadn’t received it, so I called the gift card helpline and was told it was “in transit” but there was no tracking number . Called 09/26, was told it was “sent via regular mail” even though I was charged $30 for shipping, but “should be received by 09/27”. I called the evening of 09/27 because they still hadn’t received it…and was then told that it hadn’t “left the fulfillment center.”Between calling the help line and Rosewood hotels, I had to make 10 phone calls before someone actually helped and refunded my purchase. Absolute worst experience. Would never stay at Rosewood Hotel or visit Bemelman’s after this experience.Such a massive disappointment
Every employee here is so polite, well mannered and majestic. The room service food is not the best, but the service provided by the workers are. I didnt hesitate to get familiar with them because they have great recommendations. The hotel is only a short distance from Central Park for a great walk and peace and quiet. Overall a great stay at a fabulous hotel.
We were looking forward to the re-opening of Bemelmans. They require reservations through their website, but when you go to the website, there is only the option to reserve for Earl Roses virtual concerts. We called the reservation line, and they said we needed to use Tock. Installed Tock, looked up Bemelmans, and the app says, Bemelmans is not booking reservations through Tock. But when you call and tell them, they direct you to Tock. We decided to go and see if we could be seated, but the doorman said please use Tock. Clearly some other people had not had an issue, as they were steaming by. Oh well. They will work these things out eventually. It felt great knowing that they were finally open. Soon the restaurant might open (we hope), and thank God the former President lost the election by a landslide and at least the country is getting back to normal!
Wonderful amazing staff. Waldo was such a superb concierge. He was very interested in getting to know exactly what we had in mind for our stay and helping us find the best places to mingle in the evenings. Room was HUGE, very clean and quiet. The hotel even offered a babysitting service!Awesome. Total 5 stars.
We stayed here on our wedding night and the following night and, not surprisingly, The Carlyle Hotel was a special and personal experience. Our room was decorated and there were treats waiting for us inside to celebrate the wedding. All of the staff from the concierge, to the elevator operators, to the wait staff at the cafe and Bemelmans Bar made us feel taken care of to a legendary degree. There is a magic here that is unlike anywhere else. To top it off, we were driven home to Brooklyn by the hotels driver. What a touch for our wedding weekend!
Staff was very accommodating and nice, and place has an interesting history. Although I was surprised how uncomfortable the bed was to me and my fellow guest. The furniture in our room was in poor condition and in need of cleaning and repairs, probably beautiful pieces in their day. I found the sofa to be stained, the upholstery was tattering and the filling in the cushions was lumpy and uncomfortable to sit in. The staff did their best to make our stay pleasant and tried to make the bed more comfortable by changing the mattress and inserting a board under the mattress to give more support. A really gorgeous hotel with wonderful staff, very unfortunate that the furniture in the room was so uncomfortable.
Upper crust restaurant. Treated like royaltyService impeccable. Food a culinary delight. Ambience spectacular. On the list during NYC Resysirant Week. $26 for lunch add dessert and wine paring for a nominal CostDefinitely a restaurant for an experience of a lifetime. Walking distance from the MET.
Thank you for the most amazing stay. The rooms are going to be generally clean. Excellent room - especially for the price. There are plenty of elevators for the amount of guests. Restaurant, Cafe, and Bar were excellent and Molly Ringwald was terrific. You truly get what you pay for here.
Our experience here was like a dream. Very clean during the whole stay. Very near to the metro subway. There certainly cater to a wide variety of tastes. Bemmel***s Bar is ideal spot to meet. The staff are very good and cannot do enough for you. All the facilities are top notch.
Great place to visit for evening because of live music. Pricing is a bit overpriced at bar. Charge 25 dollars for first person and 10 dollars for additional person to have a seat at the table before you order anything. I felt misled as it sounded as 25 dollars minimum per person. So two entrees 3 alcohol drinks and a several teas came out to about 240 with tip because we were charged 65 just to sit on chairs. Good thing is that they bring you this little snack platter with bar nuts free. Nice they have live music at the bAr.
Finally went to Bemelmans Bar. Had one of their signature drinks, it was delicious. b Note that there is a dress code, but thats why its one of the last of the great piano bars in the city. The murals alone are worth it. Be prepared to overspend, suck it up and enjoy while you can.
We were celebrating our 60th birthdays this year and they gave us some extra special treatment, which was greatly appreciated. THE LOCATION simply cant be beat. Staff were courteous and helpful throughout. The elevator service is a nice touch but certainly feels like it is in the wrong era.
Well, what can one truly expound on, when all amenities, staff, and non-expectations were truly surpassed -- to a veteran world traveler, and a frequenter of legendary luxury hotels spanning the globe.I am one of the lucky ones, who back in the day, was greeted upon arrival by the G.M. and his dedicated staff. The owner himself, Mr. Peter Jay Sharp, a leading Manhattan hotelier and real-estate developer, (I wont go into trivia details to bore you to death), had left me a personal , hand written note. However, just to say, the view from my two bedroom suite (yes, I had two guests in tow), welcome frivolities, and the warm feeling that pervaded inside of me, that I had indeed had arrived home. The late Bobby Short held forth back then nightly in his saloon cabaret. We feasted on supper after his performance, and the ambiance transported us back in time. And why in the whirled would I have had a clue to pack black-tie, back then, is beyond me.The doormen always took great care to make sure we were always looked after; oncewe stepped out into the real world, one always had the underlying feeling welling up inside, that we could not wait until we were back, home, and safely ensconced in our apartment suite.Room service was sublime and superlative! Housekeeping even hand washeda shirt that I needed for the next day that needed laundering. When we went to check out, the doormen had our car and driver waiting, ready to the ride to the aerodrome. We truly were nostalgic in looking forward to our next stay, with unbridled relish! Kudos to a one of a kind hotel, and a one of a kind dedicated staff. A legendary hotel, that truly will spoil you, above all others!SGM
I was greeted and naturally I asked a lot of questions. Yes I was allowed to photograph without flash as long as I did not take photos of the hotel guests. Sounded reasonable to me.I particularly enjoyed the photos of the famous guests. President Kennedys and Jackies photos across from each other. The concierge told me they were taken at different times. Not the same visit to the hotel. It appears to be a popular hotel for politicians. Theres a photo of Bill and Hillary in their young days. Also Nancy and Ronald Reagan in their glory!!
Fall from grace. Note that on trip advisor or here the better reviews are from 2008, 2009 - when i felt it was the best in NYC as well. My recent experience here was awful. Rooms have not been renovated in 30 years and are no longer charming - just dirty. Old staff is still as charming and helpful as ever, but the newer staff and managers are downright inconsiderate and unhelpful. They are faster to lecture you than assist you. The gym is appalling, The bright spot is the Cafe and breakfast - but that is one of the few holdovers from a far grander age.Unfortunate there are so many better options in the $500-1000 a night price range that there is simply no justification for staying there.
The restaurant and café/club are really nice and cool as you would imagine in New YorkThe hotel on the other side is not good. Actually its not Palace equivalent. Its not worth the price. You do not feel at home like in a PalaceI had a personnal issue during my stay that required the police comingI am shocked how the director handle it and not cared at all about itDo not recommand
Classic New York luxury. This hotel is truly timeless. I had the pleasure of enjoying drinks with friends in the lobby a few days ago. Live music played in the background as perfect cocktails were poured and enjoyed. We were sitting in the back, away from the windows. I turned my phone off, closed my eyes, and for a minute, felt like I was sitting in 1940s New York. A very cool feeling few hotels can actually achieve.
Ancient history: Had my Bar Mitzvah reception here in 1972, when Mr. Chris was the banquet manager, as well as, my Grandparents 50th Anniversary celebration, at the Regency Room, in 1970. Why do I bring this up ? Here is THE highest caliber New York venue, even to this very day. Presidents, Monarchs, international business leaders, and other very decent sorts, each had the most dignified stay and catering to. Have been to Bemelmans Bar and Cafe Carlyle (saw Herb Alpert and others) in the past few years. The glorious feeling here is totally memorable and unparalleled.
Quintessential New York extravagance. The personnel are 100% committed to excellence in service. They will accommodate your every reasonable request. Historically accredited, globally respected, and always there when you need a home like place for a break in the madness of business. Chef is dishing out the flavors, piano bar, always a taxi waiting.
I grew up in this building, my family splitting time between our home in Georgetown and the Upper East Side. The Carlyle is the ultimate expression of what the Upper East Side is about. I suggest that if you dont like it here, theres a Holiday Inn located near Times Square. One last thing, rest in peace Mr. Short, you are truly missed...
Wonderful space and a great show (Chita Rivera!). They pack the space, but it really only adds to the experience. Wait staff treats everyone like royalty, and the food was delicious. Spring risotto is creamy and loaded with truffle, and the opera cake should not be missed.
The hotel is well situated in UES very close to Central Park and has a nice classical charm about it however does feel a touch dated. Service was top-notch and there was always someone around to ask if we had questions. I can only imagine the view of Central Park from the rooms that were higher above us. I love this place.
Joined a close friend for his birthday out at the Carlyle and was summarily impressed. Despite being slightly underdressed, the atmosphere made me feel about twice as classy as I had any right to. There was live jazz music the entire evening courtesy of the Loston Harris Trio, which was wonderful in itself but made the experience greater than the sum of its parts. Drinks were fairly pricey, but mostly within the expected range; the selection was stellar and they carried a wide swath of liquors, so whether you want a standard vodka rocks or an ultra-smooth $245 glass of single-malt, theres probably something for you at the Carlyle.
I decided to spend a relaxing evening at the Carlyle watching TV.or nearly $700/night. But the TV didnt work (faulty remote which the engineer decided not to replace until his second visit). But when thee TV worked the channels were blurry. We recently stayed at the Carlyle. As beautiful as the hotel is all three rooms that we rented for four nights had many issues. a running toilet that leaked on the floor, no hot water in the powder room,I had to sleep with my head at the foot of the bed because the mattress was so broken down plus more. We mentioned the issues three times to no avail. We asked for an adjustment on the bill (a complementary drink or breakfast would have been nice while there) and the response was an upgrade the next time we visit. Thats unacceptable and impossible as we will not return.
My first and only time that I actually received a room upgrade with my premium card membership was when my wife and I spent the weekend at The Carlyle. Was not expecting anything extraordinary, but when our room had a foyer, powder room, kitchenette, living room with grand piano, dining room and separate master bedroom with full en suite bathroom, it was a pleasant surprise with all updated amenities. There alone the annual card member fee paid for itself! Beautiful lobby in this art deco building with old world charm. Very efficient front desk staff. Not sure how true it is but the hotel had direct lines to Sothebys auction gallery, when they were located on Madison Avenue. The Carlyle Restaurant, Café Carlyle, Bemelmans Bar with murals painted by Ludwig Bemelmans, depicting the famous childrens book character, Madeline in Central Park. Toronto stole the Bemelmans name for a similar establishment years ago, whats new wannabe. A bit further north on the upper eastside for most people but its a nice quiet building near the park with lots of restaurants, galleries including the Met Breuer, shops and museums nearby with convenient access to the upper westside between the 72nd & 79th Street Transverses.
I am a small town native that was visiting NYC with my daughter. I felt very safe and secure at the Casablanca, while still being in the heart of Times Square. Excellent location and very accommodating staff. Great breaksast in the morning as well. Very close to subway station and broadway shows.
I should have known something was up when we checked in and they said, So, this is your first stay with us. Ah NO...this WAS our go-to hotel when in NYC and weve stayed there many, many times. Something has really changed for the bad at the historic and stately Carlyle. Elevator buttons that dont work (which would be OK if they just posted a sign), shower light bulbs that are burned out and need to be changed, a request for Ladies shower cap instead of one in the room and 53 minutes to get coffee and 2 bagels. UGH ! Well try the Pierre next time.
By far the worst experience I have ever had. We had our group stay 2 weeks at the Carlyle hotel in NYC. During our stay several members of our group were moved numerous times into different rooms just so they could accommodate other guest, very unorganized. The building is also under construction and you can hear the constant banging, hammering and drilling. Horrible place to stay.
We parked in their garage while doing business at the nearby French consulate. My husband had to use the restroom so one of their kind attendants suggested we go inside the hotel. That was the night of the Met Gala in the City, and Bella Hadid was arriving at the hotel. The red carpet was laid out, paparazzi capturing her image. We waited. Once she was inside and the carpet was rolled up again, we continued on our mission to find the mens room. It wasnt easy to find behind the dark velour curtains at the entrance of the Café. Neither were the three steps leading up to the landing. On my way down the steps in the dark, I missed the last one, rolled my left foot and tore a muscle. That was May 7. Im still limping. Ill always remember the Carlyle.
Set off Madison Avenue, this luxe, art deco-inspired hotel is a block from Central Park, a 9-minute walk from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a 4-minute walk from the 77 Street Station subway. The plush rooms feature flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, along with iPod docks and minibars. Upgraded rooms add skyline views, sitting areas, and/or soaking tubs and rainfall showers. Sleek suites offer separate living rooms; some have pianos, full kitchens and art collections. Room service is available 24/7.Dining options include an upscale restaurant, a vibrant bar, and the storied Cafe Carlyle. Theres also an elegant spa, a hair salon and a gym.
Just stayed here this past Monday-Wednesday, September 24-26.AWESOMEBeautiful Room- it was a premier room. Totally cool. Awesome Art. Great shower. awesome bed. great chairs! great lounge room!Lobby- Incredible. The staff is awesome. Very very cool and nice. This place is as good as it gets. Very classy and OLD SCHOOL!The bar is unbelievable! AWESOME!ELEVATOR BELLMAN to guide you to your floor!Best hotel ive ever been to!5 stars all the way! Expensive but worth it. Talk to Ellis at the bar! He will crack you up. The Piano Bar at Bemelmans is hands down the coolest bar Ive ever been to. They played puttin on the ritz by fred Astaire for me!!!! Only place Id go back to in New York.Very HISTORIC place!!! Go here!
Just recently I stayed at the Carlyle Hotel in NYC. Let me tell you it was phenominal! Excellent service, Great Food, and it is in the perfect location on the Upper East Side. The showers are my favorite, its like a mix between a shower and a massage. I Definitely 100% recommend it. Go to the Carlyle this Summer! :) Hope this Helps.
I have enjoyed the Cafe twice and the restaurant once and enjoyed the experience. But on May 13, 2014 I used a Travelzoo coupon for the prix fixe dinner and was ignored by the wait staff. I did complain to the hostess who took it upon herself to serve my wife and I. I felt humiliated.I have used Travelzoo coupons at the Four Seasons and LeMeridien and Sofitel with excellent results.I did email the hotel and called the hotel manager but have not received a response!Needless to say, we will not return.
Still a lovely room for music, but not the jewel it once was - a little frayed and unloved here and there, service pretending to but falling short of French tourist hotel levels, food good, but overpriced, uninspired and safe. This used to be a room kitchen and wait staff aspired to work. Now it has the feel of noses to grindstones.

2022-06-13We had an exceptional stay at the Carlyle. Our two-bedroom suite with its courtyard view, was extremely quiet and peaceful. The suite itself was luxuriously appointed, the bar/restaurant was amazing as we enjoyed the jazz music, as well as the special champagne bar. The lobby was beautiful, providing for the perfect welcome each time we entered the property. We are especially grateful to the staff as their attentive service made our stay extra special.

2022-06-27We had a wonderful stay from the moment that our car door was opened until we departed. The entire staff was attentive and proactive. We brought our three young children and I highly recommend the two bedroom suite for families. they were absolutely fantastic.

2022-06-14Service was superb. Love the rooms have chrome cast. Fruit and snacks upon arrival were such a nice touch. Walk in closet was a wonderful surprise. Walking out the front door and shopping on Madison so convenient. Thank you!

2022-02-16My husband and I stayed at the Carlyle in October. The room was lovely but the service was pretty bad. First, they wouldn’t let my husband check in at 3pm for about an hour after arrival and didn’t offer him anything in the meantime, aside from showing him where he could buy a drink at the bar.I also asked for a late checkout and received a 30 minute extension. In that 30 minutes, we got calls from the front desk twice asking us when we would be ready to leave. The worst incident, however, was when a bellhop entered our room without knocking to get the room service table. He walked in as if nothing was the matter and it was extremely rude.I noted these incidents in the checkout survey and Melissa reached out to ask if I wanted to discuss it, but when I wrote back to say yes, she never responded. I followed up twice with no response.I will never stay at the Carlyle again, and if anyone expects 5 star service for everyone, they should think again.

2022-04-03Had a great time until we were leaving and the guys at the door were INCREDIBLY rude and told us to leave as if we were not just in there and spent money on drinks. The show was great but the way we were treated leaving changed the entire night. I dont know if they thought we were someone else but it was terrible.

2022-05-25I was treated with kindness by two of your representatives this evening on May 25t. I felt welcome. I was greeted with a smile. A little kindness goes a long way so 5 stars for you!

2022-06-13Absolutely terrific staff - we were made to feel incredibly welcome wherever we went - from the front door and the front desk, from the lifts to the bar, the club cafe and the fantastic housekeeping team, everyone we met was friendly, warm and professional - it made our week a wonderful and positive experience

2022-05-12In the upper east the market is well priced. There is a good reason why the Loews is significantly cheaper and the mark is just a little better. I much rather get a suit at The Carlyle then a room at the Mark.

2022-06-22We had one of the most amazing meals Ive ever had in NYC there. The Steak Diane is a must and it has to be followed with the ice cream sundae.
