*EDIT* after being a patient mom, with a grown bearded dragon family, for a few years now with the CAEM I just want to say it again : Dr. CLEARY AND THE STAFF are a DREAM COME TRUE in veterinary care. I cant express my deepest gratitude for them and the amazing work they do. This team is the BEST!!!I would give more stars if it was possible! I love the caem and so do my bearded dragons! Dr. Cleary and the staff are just AMAZING, after saving my females life with surgery the excellent care didnt stop. They spoiled her during her stay, understood and were more than patient with me, a crazy worried dragon mom. My dragons always get perfect treatment, no matter what we come in for, never get spooked, never black beard and seem to enjoy our trips there. Every question is always answered and all treatment options explained. I CANT THANK DR. CLEARY and THE AMAZING TEAM ENOUGH for the wonderful job they are doing.
Its really hard to find a good exotic vet... like REALLY hard. I have visited a couple of times for my bearded dragon and have been so happy with everyone there, especially Dr. Cleary. He noticed some issues/adjustments needed that my previous vet never mentioned. I am confident in their knowledge and excited to see improvements with my rescued beardie under their care.
So Thankful to Avian , great staff , professionals, my baby bunny Bella is so healthy after she got spayed, they will answer all your questions whenever you need them , thanks !Another little detail about Avian that I’m not sure they have , is the flexibility of bilingual front desk staff for customer who one services
Beautiful place to bring your beautiful exotic babies too. Its also nice and clean, make sure your baby is in a carrier when you bring your exotic animal in. Also make sure you call to let someone know you are outside for appointment, walk-in, or just to ask question. ONLY EXOTIC ANIMALS NO CATS NO DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES Rabbit, Birds, Reptiles
They were not there for me when I needed them most. On Wednesday my bird Benito suddenly fell I’ll as I rushed him to here I was informed they aren’t taking any birds in, even emergency services. I drove around frantically in nyc being told no everywhere I go because they weren’t a bird vet. I will cross this place off my list indefinitely. Benito was fine next day. The thought that next time this may happen to me again… already making sure I have a new avian vet.Unreliable
Dr. Cleary is by far the best veterinarian in the tri-state area for our rescue rabbit. We travel from Bergen County New Jersey to be in his care. He is patient, professional and treats Charlotte like she was his own.Thank goodness COVID is relaxed enough to be able to accompany her into the exam room to alleviate the anxiety on all of us.Thank you for all you do.Diane S.
I am disabled and I had to cancel an appointment the same day. Unfortunately, I am not in control of my chronic illness and often have day of flares--I dont get the courtesy of knowing when I will be sick, and certainly not a 24-hour notice from my diseases. The receptionist was not compassionate and insisted on charging me for the visit. I dont think it is fair to have a no exceptions policy, especially when this means that disabled people will carry the brunt of these fees--very ableist.
I brought my rabbit Eeyore here and I am so glad I did! I had a bad experience with a different vet clinic—however THIS place is wonderful! They know how to care for rabbits. When they discharged Eeyore to me they had cleaned around his eyes, and I could tell he was taken very good care of. I asked a million questions, and they were very kind.I know it can be hard to find people who see rabbits, much less people who truly know about rabbits, and so I highly recommend this place. I am so appreciative of this team, the doctors and the nurses are very knowledgeable. Thank you!!!
My rabbit was spayed recently here and I was expecting her to be a little sad or just down. She seemed like she was well treated there and she is recovering wonderfully, I am very happy with the place! I was also given a pain reliever for her which she takes willingly and was given information about it. I recommend this place
Im very thankful for Dr. Cleary and the staff for taking care of my 3 month old bunny. Unbeknownst to us, we got him from a breeder in NJ that is breeding and selling sick bunnies. After a thorough exam, antibiotics, and tips from the doctor hes doing much better. I highly recommend this place as they seem to genuinely care about their patients.
Our bunny donut was an adorable 2.5 year old holland lop, with the cutest small round head, he was our first and only pet.On feb 28, 2020 I took him to this place for a health exam, and 3-day boarding program. the vaccines were up to date, and the doctor said donut was very healthy and good for boarding, then I just left for vacation, not knowing this goodbye was going to be bitter forever. On march 2, 2020, like a bolt from the blue, we were told donut passed away, reasons unknown. The doctor who called explained some other bunni(es) already died unexpectedly earlier, they had to move donut to a different room to avoid potential rabbit virus. Although donut was acting fine Sunday (food was eaten), it was found died Monday morning. We were so shock, and angry that we were not warned of other bunnies illness when brought donut for exam, and frankly, I doubt what really happened, as two doctors described the details differently.my wife and I have always argued whose turn to clean up his area, today we cleaned up his empty cage the last time, now we are along.rip donut my buddy, thanks for the memory
We had a very positive experience; The entire staff was courteous, professional and had a fun-caring flair. Handing over our feathery baby was extremely difficult; Reception was very patient and comforting. Dr. Rodrigues was amazing at explaining the situation, details and our medical options with X-rays. He’s very engaging and we really appreciated that. Everyone we encountered was awesome. We look forward to coming back under healthier circumstances. Thank you 🙏
I have had nothing but great experiences bringing my (many) pet rats here for the last 3 years. The veterinarians and attendants are incredibly kind and helpful, the ladies at the front desk are wonderful & genius, and the office is full of boarding bunnies and birds which is fun to be around. The office is clean, Ive never had to wait past my scheduled time, and they always seem to be able to fit me in last minute when necessary. After each appointment Ive had there I have received a follow up call to check in on the progress of my pet, even if such a call was not really warranted. I am grateful to have such kind and attentive people available to help me care for my beloved furry friends.Even in the sad case of having a pet put down, I found the staff and veterinarian involved were collected and soothing, empathetic, and very willing to accommodate my emotions. My highest recommendations.
My guinea pig is a new patient here, we were attended by dr Rivera. It was a great experience. He was kind to me and my guinea pig, thorough and happy to answer any questions. The staff is nice too. I think pricing is reasonable, vets are never cheap but i know I’m paying for a specialized vet who knows how to properly treat small animals so it’s worth it. I got a quote for a teeth trimming and it didn’t make me gasp.
This veterinary office was a great experience and would recommend to anyone with a small or exotic animal. My guinea pig was sick with a respiratory infection. I never experienced going to the vet for a small animal. I was anxious when I called the office but I was greeted exuberantly by Tracy, I can’t image how many stressed out calls they get a day but I was made to feel very at ease. Tracy guided me patiently and efficiently in filling out forms I needed online. The online forms went directly to the office and I was set for a walk-in appointment the same day, first come first serve, very fast and convenient. When I arrived I was impressed with their efficient system for handling pets and transactions during the COVID19 pandemic. In our era of social distancing, there was a table outside (right by their door) where you sign in and leave your pet, you call the front desk and they come out to get the pet to the doctor. (I didn’t have to call, they were observant in just watching through the window whether or not I came). They text you a confirmation and an approximate time. You wait outside and the vet gives you a call. I was helped by Dr. Cleary, who was very informative about my Guinea pig’s condition and variables in the household that cause ailments my guinea pig was suffering from. He gave me a bunch of information on the maintenance of my pet, things I haven’t come across or mentioned on the internet regarding my small animal as that I am a voracious googler of information. This is why we have professionals!! They bring your pet back outside to the table and you do your transaction. I was very impressed by how streamlined everything was. The whole experience made me feel comfortable and at ease. These people have dedicated their lives to Animals, they clearly love them and care. I am definitely coming back here if anything happens to my little loved one again.
This place showed so much concern for my baby sun conure Bino. Dr. Rivera is amazing and attentive. Holly and the lady’s at the front desk are always very helpful and knowledgeable. Any time I call they are always 100% professional and caring. I couldn’t ask for a better avian vet to bring my baby bino too.
Staff at CAEM have a ton of attitude. The receptionists appear to get joy from telling customers theyre too full to board your pet, because, in a word, they market themselves as the only game in town for boarding exotic pets. They like to claim they book their boarding facilities months in advance. With all that in mind, they charge close to $40/day for small animal boarding, and when they are full, they recommend vet techs to home-sit who charge close to $50 per day for small animals. Some of these techs also have serious attitude issues.Ive taken one of my small animals here, and he died as a result of vet negligence. The vet largely ignored the medical issues that the small animal was having. He was unresponsive, replying as much as a week later. When he did take things seriously, it was too late. Beware! In addition, they charge a ton (we paid close to $500 for care that ultimately didnt help at all), and vets could care less about exotic small animals. Their expertise is no better for exotic small pets than a standard vet, but because theyve marketed themselves as an outpost for exotic pets, they have cornered the market and charge much more than anyone else in NYC. In summary, the staff here are arrogant beyond belief, with a confrontational attitude!
Had my first visit last week and was happy with how kind and professional everyone was. I got a new rabbit owner folder with information and treats/toys. The vet seemed to really enjoy my rabbit and treated him quickly and was patient with how wiggly he can be. The office is super responsive via email and so far Ive had a great experience there!
Ive been here twice with hamsters and theyve always treated them perfectly no matter the outcome. They do their best to care for the animals and always have more than 1 plan for your liking. The staff is also incredibly kind and keeps you updated on your pets well being. Definitely recommend!
Went here for my bearded dragon. They took me in right away and took really good care of him. The vet explained everything to me, the steps we were going to do to make my little guy better. He put me at ease, since before I got there I was highly worried and stressed. Would absolutely recommend coming here!
Very happy with this hospital! My baby bird had a blood feather and needed medical help. The staff, nurses, and the doctor that saw my bird couldn’t have been nicer. The nurse and doctor took the time to answer all of my questions and were very gentle and sweet toward my bird. For what could have been a very stressful situation I knew that my baby was in good hands. The prices for all tests were very transparent and provided before any tests were done.
I have three Quaker Parrots and we only go to The Center. Luckily, they are in good health, but we do check in and get a wing trim and a pedicure, at least once a year. The doctors, nurses, and aides are all wonderful to Rafi, Galileo, and Ariel. But, they all love nurse Lorelei the best!
I’ve only taken my rabbit in for neutering and checkups so can’t speak to emergencies (and pray I never have to). Every time I’ve gone, the staff have been super sweet and knowledgeable. I wish there were more of them in NYC area! I have a bit of a hike from Queens and pay $$$ for Ubers but this is the only place I trust with my rabbit’s care.
Both appointments weve had so far have been emergency visits for our little budgie. The nurses and doctors have always been kind and took the time to make sure she was ok, even when they were overbooked. Its so reassuring to know we have a place to bring her that respects our little girl, rather than saying she is just too small to treat.
We first took our sick guinea pig here in mid October. We got a good first impression because the communication from the staff is always really professional and polite. They definitely understand exotic pets and their owners really well. Theyre super competent.First we got to speak with a nurse that looked over our animal husbandry and gave us tips and advice. Afterwards, we got a vet to look over our guinea pig.The examination fee isnt too bad ($150ish?) but the prices for the other services are definitely costly. We spent like $200 for blood work, $300 for an x-ray, and then we had to pay for the guinea pigs teeth to be filed down (all together added up to about $1,000). Felt a bit overpriced. The only fault is that we never received a call from the actual vet that performed the procedure on how it went, their thoughts, etc. We only got follow up calls from the front desk staff.Although our piggy did not get better, we definitely dont blame them. He was an old pig, his time was coming. We couldnt afford to take him back for additional testing, and nothing in the blood work or x-ray showed signs of other issues. So we continued the care plan until he passed suddenly (he was not in pain, nor was he suffering). We went back for the cremation services. The process was swift and smooth. Im always glad that every time we call theyre always professional. Waaayyy better than other vets in our area, which is why we come here all the way from NJ.I plan to keep coming back for my other guinea pigs 👍🏻
The first and only vet Ive loved in a lifetime of owning exotics. Highly recommended if anyone is looking for a great vet. Everyone there is super nice, the office always has cute animals to adopt and supplies you can purchase at the desk, and the staff is incredibly friendly. They are also able to get you an appointment in a reasonable window of a few days.
Felt a bit rushed by nurses, but the Doc was very nice.Facility did not use the appointment deposit fee towards my visit, which was a bit inconvenient. Refund was promptly issued. RX refill process is such a pain. After filling out the form and receiving a confirmation email stating Rx was ready to be picked up, I receive a call from a nurse saying they are out of stock and cannot help me AFTER I pay the GWB toll omw to their facility.Nurse doesnt have time to call other pharmacies to have my prescription sent there, so now Im at the discretion of whichever online pharmacy they are partnered with and their fees.Dr. Renna was very helpful and amazing over the phone, every other aspect of this facility is just a huge inconvenience.Update: I got a bill from the online vet for the Rx, and it costs 3x more than the price I paid at the facility. Im set to pay exactly $100 for an abundant amount of medication that she needs. Their chosen online pharmacy cannot give me less than 10ml of antibiotics, conveniently for them. Im defeated and essentially forced to pay this insane extra fee due to a mix up the facility had that they are unwilling to correct as shown by the reply below. Dont blame COVID for an issue that began with miscommunication from team to client. I dont expect them to pull the medicine out of thin air, but for them to be calling human pharmacies and not know of ANY vet or compounding pharmacies in my area or theirs and consider that help is surprising.
They definitely are looking to get you pay at the maximum possible. They pressure you to do some more tests of what you had in mind. They take their time on the expense of the stressful pet. I need a whole chapter to discribe my situation. Shortly, I don’t even believe they truly care for your pet. They want you back there again. They used no gloves, no protection, dirty stained towels… I hope my bird will be fine after this check up. Sorry to disappoint you buy our pets deserve care!
This vet came highly recommended from my rabbits rescue organization and did not disappoint. Clear communication throughout from the friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff. There arent a lot of options for rabbit healthcare in the city so Im glad this practice is here and offers such high-quality care--I came in from south Brooklyn and it was totally worth it.
I have been a client for years and have brought all of my exotic pets there for different medical issues. I also bring them there for wellness visits. The staff is never too busy to make an appointment or answer a question. The attention that Dr Wilson gives her clients and patients is extremely caring and professional. My birds feel very comfortable with Dr Wilson. She has a very soft touch.I highly recommend Dr Wilson and her staff.
A wonderful visit to the vets office! They showed great care toward my precious pet, and were sensitive to my concerns. They showed me estimates before taking any action, so I knew of the potential costs, and they got my pet back in my hands and on the road to recovery ASAP…which is what every pet owner truly desires, right?!
The Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine has saved my bearded dragon’s life more than once! They are communicative, easy to book appointments with, invested in making sure you’re not overcharged, and warm friendly people — your pet is in good hands. Dr. Cleary is a saint. Thank you so much for all your help!
There are very few Avian Specialist in NYC in fact I think there are only 3. Some Veterinarians have lied and said they were Avian Specialists when in fact they are not trained in Avian medicine or treatment. That is why I only trust The Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine with my precious Orange Winged Amazon. They are #1 in service and care.
Amazing exotic vet!!! My rabbit has some very complex health issues that has left previous vets stumped, and Dr. Wilson and the entire staff are giving him excellent expert care. Cannot recommend enough if you have an exotic! It is worth is to go to a specialized vet, and these are the people!
My cockatiel needed an emergency visit after being caught by a dog and this place thankfully has an em room for exotic pets. The trip altogether cost me around 300.00usd and 2 hours including travel time/ waiting time/ visit and medication. There is a higher (understandably) charge for walk-in vs. Appointments. He was treated with care and the reception staff is awesome at helping you figure out what information you need and will help you gather things together to make sure your pet is given the care he/she deserves. Highly recommend.
So happy with the service they provided. My bunnys scar is healing nicely and rapidly, and I know she was well cared for during and after surgery. The covid-related precautions of outdoor drop-off/pick up made it super easy and safe to bring her there. Their rabbit neuter/spay clinic is affordable and high-quality care, and I love that there is no added stress (for bunnies) of dogs and cats. I definitely recommend!
UPDATE: Lorelei called me to follow up and find out what happened during this visit. She was extremely professional and understanding and talked to all those who were involved in my visit. Hopefully things are better now and communication has improved!ORIGINAL: I had a scheduled appointment for 3:30 pm yesterday and it took more than 2 hours while we waited outside in the cold. Considering that they charge $50 if youre over 20 minutes late, youd expect them not to be late themselves and make you wait so long. They didnt notify me at all that they were running behind and had 3 surgeries and 1 emergent visit and I only later found out through the call from the vet. I called after an hour because it was so long already and the front desk told me the doctor would call me soon. Half an hour later, still no call. I had to call back again to ask for an update. Its not the doctors fault to tend to the patients but there is a severe lack of communication to the front desk and to the clients. If Im paying so much, there should be some respect to the client. Giving me a call takes less than a minute. There were plenty of staff available to give me a call. When I picked up my pet, I was very nice and told the staff that I wouldve appreciated a heads up if I had to wait so long and she brushed it off, walked away from me while still talking with an attitude. You cant expect your clients to stay outside for 2+ hours in the cold with no update.
I took my cockatiel Piku here as she broke her nail. Dr. Julian A. Rivera was very nice and kind to my bird. It is hard to find good avian vets in NYC because most places are specialized with cats and dogs. The atmosphere is good and they are very professional so I will go back again!
I just got off the phone with a desk receptionist for an appointment to spay my bunny. When I asked for an appointment, they responded by informing me that they were going to have to charge more than the estimated invoice since my rabbit needed to be seen before the procedure. I was put on hold as they calculated pricing. When they got back to me on the price, they dropped a procedure called Antech Fecal O&P Centrifugation to reduce the inflation on the price difference. Of course Im concerned, why are they dropping something they invoiced me initially? When asked about it, the women said it wasnt necessary since it was a lab check for worms. Not once had anyone ever mentioned worms during my first visit. From that interaction it is now my understanding that they were trying to charge me for something I didnt need. The spay procedure is already exorbitant, costing 550.00+ Im seeking out other options.Edit: I will be calling in tomorrow to get a full invoice for clarification since bloodwork wasnt mentioned in the call either. Once again, something else is not disclosed.
The vets and the staff are so caring and kind! My parrot is always relaxed when we go there, and relaxed when we leave — other vets have left her traumatized, so that is saying a lot about the care she receives at The Center for Avian & Exotic Vets. Ive trusted them with my parrots health and well being for many years, and have even boarded her there for a few weeks at a time on several occasions when I have had to leave town. She always seems to enjoy herself, and the staff dotes on her. When I board her, they send me photos and updates, so I dont worry. If youre looking for a board-certified avian vet, I especially recommend Dr. Grodio—though all the vets there are terrific. Theyve instituted very strong Covid precautions, so you can trust that both you and your pets will be safe.
I went to the vet yesterday for my rabbit’s annual check up. The receptionist are kind and friendly, they listen to your questions even if it’s a lot they’ll answer with the best ability they can. My rabbit’s doctor was nice and very informative With the pandemic going on I spoke with the doctor through the phone and it was simple. I’ll be coming back next month and I feel less nervous then I did about her upcoming surgery. It was my second time coming here and I highly recommend, they love the animal so much I very much appreciate that while it was hot outside instead of giving me my rabbit back the guy said “ I’ll keep her inside since it’s really hot out” while I had to wait for the paperwork outside, that really showed me they cared so much about my bun and I loveee it 💝
Everyone was very courteous, knowledgeable, and informative. They made me feel comfortable leaving my bunny in their care. The visit was timely the vet called me after the examination and answered all my questions. Everything ran smoothly and in accordance to Covid guidelines. My bunny will definitely will be going back.Update* Had my bunny spayed here a few days ago and I am so happy with the level of care she was given . Staff was so understanding informed me of every step of the process. Answered every time I called to check in thoughtfully and politely. Toga came home from surgery and is recovering quickly. She was given pain meds to take home for pain management. I would recommend this place to anyone especially if you have a bunny.
I recently bought my parakeet here for an emergency visit and upon arrival she expired. The vet called me and told me but I had already knew of my budgies demise. One of the staff members brought her out so I could say my final goodbyes and she was very gracious. The other staff member, particularly a black woman was not the most pleasant person as when I arrived and called she had me wait until her food delivery came then and no sooner did she assist me. My husband even noticed she was very abrasive. Im having my baby cremated through them and I hope this process is done with integrity and I can bring my bird home.
If I could give 0 star, I would. I had the worst experience today taking my bird for an exam to get a USDA Export paper. If I didnt have previous experience with this kind of paperwork, I wouldnt be so surprised by the unbelievable charges for literally replicating pre-existing copies of the documents. Two years ago we were charged for the same documents $180. Today, I paid $400. How is it even possible? This year we got two additional charges: one for research, we didnt ask for, which was explained to me as a charge for a consultation before the visit. This phone consultation was a mandatory procedure to make an appointment. Two years ago, we didnt need to speak to a doctor before making an appointment. I am not sure what kind of research was done, but the doctor on the phone didnt say anything about her research. She just made an appointment. We were later charged $136 for 5 min, 2 of those min, we were on hold. This time we were charged for two USDA export papers and we only got one. When I asked why we were charged 3 times more than 2 years ago, the woman at the front desk said that she didnt set the prices. Such a scam!
In short I feel this business was more like a cash grab. I understand the overhead in NYC, however the upsell here unquestionably seemed over the top to me. Also ,if you are prompted to leave your pet here overnight, ask yourself is this really necessary? I went to see a AVBP after this visit and got very different advice without the need to take out a new line of credit (literally), I was not trusting of this place as soon as I felt the pressure to spend spend spend! The place is very nice cute and cozy with the pets on display if youre into that, its very clean and well kept as well. Id never go back, they seemed much more concerned with how much I was willing to spend then my pet IMO, and that was only round #1.
Everything has been fantastic and the location is great for Manhattan. They were very invested in making sure my bird was taken care of, and keeping me updated on his status while staying with them.Bit expensive, but 100% worth it for having a dedicated, round-the-clock bird-first facility.
Ive been here twice. Once one of my guinea pigs was doing poorly. He developed a respiratory infection and stopped eating and pooping. They were so kind to him and treated him well. With the antibiotics, critical care, and intestinal mobility medication, he got better within two weeks. About 6 months later my other guinea pig got the same thing and they were so good to him. I just love how they treat each patient like they matter and are not just another number. The vets are amazing and spend the time they need with you to answer all your questions. The front desk staff always made us comfortable and at ease. The wait time was short even in the evening. Prices are reasonable. Highly recommend!!
The doctors and nurses are always kind and considerate; they’re great at explaining everything about your pet’s condition and are very empathetic when a pet must be sent over the rainbow bridge. I have moved around and had exotic vets closer to my home, but always go to CAEM because of their professionalism and care for the pets they see.
I brought our African Grey in on Saturday 9/18/21, which I hadn’t realized my actual appointment was for the 25th however they kindly accommodated me.Zak saw Dr. Rena, she wanted to do bloodwork amd an X-ray since she felt something off in his belly. She told me he’d need toStay overnight for supportive care, gave me the low and high end of an estimate that was quite reasonable. Unfortunately by Sunday mornings Zak took a turn for the worse, Dr Rena immediately called us and asked us to come down to see Zak and we could speak with her. When we got there we discovered the news was terrible it looked like he may have had a huge tumor because there was so much soft tissue, it was very difficult to even see where his organs began and ended. She was honest he wouldn’t survive, but my husband wanted him home so our son had his chance to say goodbye. By yesterday morning I knew he was in his dying stages, we all took turns holding him, loving him and talking to him. He passed away peacefully in my husband’s arms late yesterday afternoon. We want to thank Dr. Rena for her honestly and compassion and being supportive of our decision and we’d like to thank the staff for accommodating me even though I had the wrong date. They all truly made a horrible experience somewhat easier to handle because they explained what to expect and I can’t thank you all enough. Zak is now happily flying over the rainbow bridge but will always be in our hearts
God where do I even begin...I brought my chameleon calypso in, she was lethargic, sunken eyes, pale in color, loss of appetite, just overall not looking well. After looking for an exotic vet for 2 hours I stumbled across this place and immediately called to place an emergency appointment. The girls at the front desk were fantastic, directed me to the correct area to fill out forms so I could have her seen immediately. Took her within a minute of me arriving to drop her off.The vet informed me Chameleons that are usually in the state she was in don’t make it and after talking for a bit I made the decision to put her down. The compassion shown was beyond what I’ve ever seen at a vets office, I lost the light of my life and the staff truly made the process so much easier. I appreciate every single one of you for what you do, I loved her with alL my heart and you were all so kind and caring.Thank youI highly recommend Coming here, they truly do care for the animals they see, even the scaly ones 💚
Very experienced staff n helpers, took my girlfriends cockatiel here n they doing thier very best to help our 26yrs cocktail bird named Chu Cho.Im hoping to have him live with us for 2 more yrs,Hopefully so Ill keep ya posted, very clean, lovely staff, great doctors, free coffee of any kind.Update my bird is doing great hes off the meds hes 27, I hope he makes it to 30. Lol old manUpdate: Chu Cho is doing great and hes 28 still strong :)Update: Sadly our Chu Cho Pass away with lung failure he couldnt breathe enough. He was 29 in a half :( (8,8,2020)
Dr and staff were super informative, knowledgeable, and patient. Ive never had such a pleasant vet experience and my baby (turtle) is doing so much better now. Im so glad I found them. Besides the impeccable bedside manner, the Dr. actually knows and tells you the price range of the service they want to perform *before* following thru with your pet (not an all too common idk the price one of the girls up front will be able to tell you at the end🙄). An exotic vet bill is going to be pricey no matter what but at least you dont have to wait til the end for a receptionist/tech to hand you the bill rundown before you know how much everything will cost and you have agency in the treatment plan
I rushed in, same day, with my bunny who was displaying early signs of head tilt. They got us in right away. They were the only clinic anywhere that could take us. They made sure he was cared for, fed, soothed, and that all of his needs were taken care of. They were also excellent with following up with us afterwards several times. We also needed refills on an antibiotic and they worked very quickly to ensure that we rcvd it promptly when we came in. All of the staff were super friendly and caring. This would be a place Id recommend always.
My bird Max the budgie got scratch by my cat. It can be fatal. They took in me in emergency and were absolutely wonderful. They took care of Max with so much love. We were given the best attention and the best services. They even checked my other bird who came for the ride. Their pricing are very reasonable.I highly recommend them.
Weve been going to The Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine for 5 1/2 or so years. Ever since we got our Black Headed Caique. When he was a baby we went to another vet closer to home, but one day we had an emergency and we were referred to the The Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine. The doctors there took amazing care of our bird through this crisis and walked us through everything step by step. After our bird recovered, we couldnt fathom going anywhere else for his continued care. We have leaned on The Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine for regular check ups, beak and nail trims and boarding and were very satisfied every time. When we boarded our bird, they sent us pictures of him every day, which we loved. The doctors, techs, and front desk staff are all very knowledgable and friendly. No avian vet in NYC comes close!
I used to love and recommend this practice. Ive had countless exotics treated here over the years. Unfortunately the level of care has dropped significantly over the past year. When I took in 5 pets recently I asked in advance if a vaccine was in stock and was told if it was not they would let me know in advance. When we got there they didnt have the vaccine. Now they expect me to make a second trip in, not only causing stress to my animals, but they also want to charge $40 for an mini exam before vaccinating them.Following the original check up a few weeks ago, I called three times and asked that Dr. Wilson call me because I had a question about one of my rabbits eyes. She never called.Today I made a trip in to pick up medication for one of my pets. They provide the correct medication but prescribed it to the wrong pet... who is a different species.Multiple problems and poor communication seems to be the new norm. Fortunately none of my pets have been harmed by this, but I have no confidence in their ability to provide quality care.Update:Its one day later, The read my review - result they discharged my pets and canceled our next appointment. They are refusing to treat my pets saying I dont feel its safe for me to allow my vets to treat your pets, And they did this over social media. Since when does a professional clinic use social media to fire patents?
Thanks to Lorelei and the doctor my parakeet is feeling much better after a broken blood feather. Lorelei is SO sweet and kind and explained so much about how to beat care for my budgies. Speaking to Lorelei reassured me that this is a great place to get care for my budgies. I have been to another again vet with a friend for their bird, but the care is a worlds difference. Will definitely be returning even though it is a long drive.
These Ruthless Vets only care if you have money, I highly doubt they’re in this profession because they care about animals. I had a sick boy who I had already brought to the Animal Emergency (they gave me critical care food) I fed him with a syringe & did all I could. Things weren’t getting any better so I called this place asking to change my follow up appointment with them to a sooner date because I felt my bunny was going to die! I told them I wouldn’t have the money until two days later (TWO DAYS) and that I really needed to save my boy. I even asked if they had any tips on what I should do (crying on the phone) and the lady said “No I don’t have any tips for you” so I did my best & sure enough the day I got paid (two days later) He passed away in the morning. My baby. I wish nothing but the worst for this business. Sending negative vibes ~
I absolutely love The Center for Avian & Exotic Medicine! I have been a loyal customer for over a year and I could not be happier with the services that I have received there. I adopted a blind pigeon Oct of 2014 and I took him here to give him a check up and to make sure that I was doing the right things as far as feeding and caring for my Stevie. I have never had a bird or a pet before and I was concerned because Stevie had been pretty roughed up before I got him so I needed to be sure that the care he was receiving from me was adequate and not harming him in anyway. Once I got there, I knew I was in the right place! They took the time to give him a complete and thorough examination and they gave me excellent advice on how to properly care for Stevie. I have followed their advice and my bird is happy and as healthy as he could possibly be. I have also used them to board Stevie whenever I go away and I am always satisfied with the care that they provide. The first time I left him there to board, I was like a sick mama and I called to make sure he was alright and they were so nice about giving me an update on how he was doing which made my trip less stressful since I was nervous about leaving him. Since that first time, I have boarded Stevie three times and I feel Great about it. No more worries or care for me because I know that he will be taken care of by professional and caring people. Now lets talk price, They are very reasonably priced for the services that they provide and lets be honest, Are our pets not worth any price to make sure that they are healthy and well taken care of. As I said, I use to think that Vets in general were super expensive but to my surprise this place is reasonable. Also keep in mind that this place is always spotless and the staff is super professional and so friendly that they make you feel right at home. Appointment times are awesome, I have never ever waited for any real significant amount of time to be seen or taken care of so no worries there. As I said, they really are professional and its a pleasure to have a safe environment with people that know what they are doing take care of my most precious possession! Stevie and I are very happy to have found this place and we would never go anywhere else!
This place is a bit expensive, but absolutely awesome people work here. Treats the animals with utmost care. When my girls bunny was about die, they called her, allowed her to into the room next door to say goodbye and allowed us as much time as we wanted, even after she passed away.
The Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine is THE place to bring your bird, reptile, or other exotic pet. The care provided is, in my opinion, impeccable. One can tell that working at the Center is more than just a job for the staff; it is a calling. The dedication to both pet, and pet caretaker is clear is the superior service that is provided.
Weve been going here for years to get veterinary care for our rats and love it. The facility is very clean and modern, and the staff expertly knowledgeable. Even in our most difficult emergencies, theyve been sympathetic and honest. Theyve never pushed us to get unnecessary tests for our animals, and always support whatever decision we make. Frankly, we feel lucky to have them in the city. The greatest testimony to our appreciation for this place is that we used to travel well over an hour from Queens. Thats how good they are.
Had our two male rabbits neutered at thier monthly clinic this past week. Staff was friendly & knowledgeable. We felt very comfortable leaving our bunnies. They sent us home with clear directions on housing & medication. They also called the next day to check up. Highly recommend!
CAEM has taken exceptional care of both of my bunnies over the last 2.5 years! They have provided well check-ups, nail trims, spay procedure, boarding services and (fortunately just once) sick care. All of the staff are kind, helpful and care deeply about all of the pets in their care. They make me and my rabbits feel so welcome any time we come in. CAEM has also adapted really well to COVID requirements, continuing all of their services but with safety measures and new procedures in place. I continue to be so grateful for all of the support CAEM provides!
I brought my bunny here for a late emergency one day several years ago (when my vet was not available) and I have not gone anywhere else since. They identified the issue my other vet should have caught and treated my baby with such love and urgency. The doctors and staff here are talented, thorough and caring. My buns do not even mind going for their check ups here.
I came with my sick little dwarf hamster Oatmeal, the staff was amazing. I was a bit overwhelmed being there with him and having another person with their bird not in a carrier, being that my little guy is a rodent. But nonetheless they made me feel welcomed and eventually put me in another room away from all the birds, which of course helped with the stress of my hammie. They were very thorough and really talked to me about my options for his treatment. I will say be prepared to spend some money, this is an exotic vet center. But you get what you paid for, which is nothing but outstanding service.
I can’t say enough good things about Avian. I always bring my guinea pigs to Avian Exotics. They are very thorough and are very attentive to your questions and concerns. Dr. Cleary is so amazing. He’s always checking up on his patients. He’s very thorough and so wonderful. I only trust Avian Exotics to perform surgeries on my babies. Dr. Grodio is awesome as well. And I can’t forget the staff, the staff is so amazing and reassuring.
If you own an avian or exotic animal this is the place for you and your pet.I have been taking my Red Eared Slider to The Center for Avian & Exotic Medicine for her annual examinations for the past seventeen years, and she boards at the center at least once per year. All the doctors and staff are professional, loving, caring, and experts in maintaining the health of your pet. If you are like me I want only the best of care for my turtle, so try The Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine for your pets next check-up.
I had horrible experience with many avian doctors ( not going to say places, because I don’t want to deal with the drama from them ) and my last place was terrible, but here!! They are amazing in my opinion, they know what they talking about, they are friendly and very knowledgeable of the topic, sadly they don’t have emergency at night, that’s the only thing I would said is sad, but i understand since from what I see, there’s not avian vets that works a night
They took very good care of my rat Sadie here. I took her in to get spayed and have a mammary tumor removed. Dr. Wilson was very knowledgeable and helpful, and was experienced with rats and had performed both surgeries before, which helped to ease my fears. They did the surgery and fixed her right up, she healthy incredibly well and is very healthy now. I did have to shell out quite a bit of money for the surgery, but they gave me an accurate estimate of the cost beforehand and took very good care of her. The staff were all friendly and nice and I never had to wait very long to be seen.
Firstly, Id like to say the women at the front desk are so lovely, professional, knowledgeable, and helpful! So far my experience has been a solid one. My society finch broke her leg, and the nurse and doctor who assisted me were vigilant in providing the care she needed. They gave me clear, concise directions in the steps of the treatment process. She got a cast/splint the first appointment as well as pain medicine to be administered 2x a day for 10 days. After this I took her in to be checked and after two weeks her cast was off and her leg is healing well! They very obviously knew how to handle a society finch correctly (which is not easy task seeing how tiny and feisty she is!) And I was fully satisfied with the experience. Just a note, however, unfortunately this kind of care is quite expensive, especially the x-rays and medication. Of course any animal is worth this no matter what, but I understand not everyone is in the position of being able to afford such costly care. I did not inquire if such services are available but if they are not- it would be amazing to have resources for those in tough economic situations so that every animal can get the care they need regardless of the owners monetary standings! Much love and gratitude x
100% recommended! We brought our rattie in for respiratory issues. The nurse was absolutely amazing - she went over his history, showed us how to administer the antibiotics, etc. The doctor was very thorough and caring. I really appreciated that she gave us several options for treatment, and that she went out of her way to give us tons of information. They brought us back right on time, and the office is sparkling clean and welcoming. Our rattie baby is feeling right as rain today! Highly recommended.
I traveled very far here after previously following with LIBEVC who refused to start my guinea pig on a different antibiotic when her URI would not go away. Some background info on my previous vet which drove me to come to CAEM: I could not afford x-rays, nasal swabs, or a CT scan to rule out a mass so I asked if we could try a second antibiotic (or any other alternatives within that price range), but my old vet refused because there was no guarantee that a different one would work, and I ended up paying for a follow-up visit to only be given a 1 week extension of the same antibiotic which wasnt helping! I understand that they truly wanted to do the best work-up, but I could not shell out any more money after having already spent so much money on other tests. When I went to CAEM, they were so understanding and helpful despite only being able to communicate via phone. The wonderful vet (I am so sorry, I cant remember her name) was very honest with me about whether or not a nasal swab would be worth the price as my guinea pig was coughing but did not have enough nasal discharge. They prescribed her Bactrim which, as expected, took a toll on her system, but they were very forward with recommending probiotics and all the necessary steps. So much better than my previous vet, and I really appreciate the honesty and being willing to work within my budget to the best care. I wish more vets understood that sometimes you have to pick the somewhat less perfect solution if the alternative (not being able to afford the best) is to literally let the pet continue to suffer. They are very far from where I live but I would 100% make the trip all the way here for quality care. Also, they have higher prices than LIEBVC but this is well worth it. My guinea pig is also doing great now. :)
Ive taken my pet to this place twice and I got to say the service is great. Its organization online and flexibility of making an appointment is on point. As well as the attention to detail that is needed to take care of exotic pets. The veterinarian that attended to my pet had a great follow up call a few days after the visit and gave recommendations to me. They are honest about the prices and can help you know what you can do to pay.
DO NOT BRING YOUR PET TO THIS PLACE. My rabbit died after contracting a virus (rabbit hemorrhagic disease) from this facility. While they did perform the necropsy, their response afterward was absolutely unacceptable. I had to deal with the trauma of watching my rabbit have a seizure in front of me, suffered ptsd after she died, sleepless nights, couldn’t be in my own apartment, and all I asked for was a refund since my rabbit died in their care. The owner was very rude and refused to refund me and told me that this was just the risk I took when I took my rabbit out of the house. Not a sorry, not a shred of empathy or sympathy. I can’t even have a new rabbit because apparently my apt is contaminated by the virus. I think the least this establishment could do is refund me my money, but instead they’ve just added insult to injury. Stay far far far away from this place if you value your pets. I hope the trauma I’ve been through doesn’t happen to anyone else.
This place was incredible! I was hesitant to get my rabbit spayed because of the cost, so when i found out they did a value spay/neutering clinic for cheap, I jumped on board. They did an amazing job, and my rabbit fully recovered in 3 days. They gave us medicine for our rabbits and the instructions on how to care for them post-op. They even called me the next day to make sure my rabbit was doing well after the surgery. I highly recommend this place!!
I just adopted a rabbit and brought him in for a well checkup. It was a great experience. The nurse and doctor were very friendly and answered all my questions. They came highly recommended by the adoption people and close friends with exotic pets. I highly recommend them as well.
Everyone here is super informative and helpful. Before even starting the appointment the vet sat down with us and asked us about daily care of our rabbit to make sure we had all the knowledge we needed and were doing right by our pet. They explained everything they did and were super patience with our baby.
My son unlike my daughter wanted to have a turtle and a gecko as pets. The good thing is they live a long time. The turtle has always been healthy but the gecko has always had problems in the winter with shedding the skin no matter how warm and moist her humidity is kept. Come spring time she was always at the doctors due to skin in her eye. She would get an infections, and this clinic has always been very good on giving her the right treatment for it. One thing though, make sure to have a savings account for your exotic pets they can be very costly. The doctors love what they do and they take care of them like their own pets. One thing I got to say is, only pet lovers work at this place.
The Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine has always offered excellent service for my Red Eared Slider. We have been going there for wellness check-ups, medical emergencies, and boarding for the past seventeen years. The Veterinarians and Staff are all extremely knowledgeable and caring for the health of my turtle. I highly recommend The Center for Avian & Exotic Medicine for the care of your pet.
Amazing!!! After seeing 4 aviain specialists Dr Grodio took this extremely complex case and was willing to reach out to other colleagues and find the right diagnosis and treatment of my bird. Wish they werent in the city (distance and price) but they are worth it. And the staff are friendly and accommodating!
Ive used CAEM whenever my bunny needed an annual review or dental treatments. In fact, I adopted my Motley Chue (PKA Mae) from them 8 years ago! Even when I moved out of state, I went back to CAEM - especially after one vet claimed to treat rabbits but couldnt do a dental exam, and the other exotics hospital near me charged outrageously high rates (to the point that I freaked out about what might happen to my senior girl). I only wish on the last visit thered been a full exam and not just dental ... it turned out that my girl had only a few weeks to live because of lung issues, and instead of dental surgery I wouldve preferred getting supportive/palliative care for her. I still recommend CAEM as one of the best places in the NYC region for small animals/birds, because Motley was treated so well otherwise during her 8 years with me.
Ive had several experiences here. Some were routine and some were more serious, but all were always handled with compassion and professionalism. The veterinarians and staff are the best! I have birds and its so difficult to find avian certified vets with experience as well! This center is gem! Highly reccomend for avian and exotic care.
Dr. Pliny and Dr. Wilson have both treated my mice. They were knowledgeable, caring and took the time to explain all the options for treatment with all the pros and cons. I never felt rushed in any appointment and always left their office feeling confident in their diagnosis and treatment plans. The staff, including the vet techs and receptionists are equally outstanding. They are friendly and helpful in every way. Exotic vets are rare, even in NYC. So to not only find one, but one as exceptional as The Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine is a lucky find indeed.
I first brought my guinea pig, Bashful, here on Christmas Eve for an emergency vet visit. They were incredibly accommodating in squeezing us in for an appointment, especially at such an inconvenient time--and the care we received was top notch. Bash was treated and had a full recovery, and the advice I received for further pet care has enhanced my boys life tenfold. The nurses are warm and highly competent, and the vet we see, Dr. Cleary, is extremely knowledgeable, patient, kind, and helpful. I now come here to treat both of my guinea pigs. Im amazed at how affordable they are for such specialized services. I trust CAEM with my precious pets lives, and feel privileged to do so.For anyone looking for an exotics vet, look no further: youve found it.
Great first visit but not perfect due to unfortunate COVID regulations. You cant really have a one on one visit with the veterinarian which is important in taking your pet for medical reasons so you can get a effective conversation on whats really wrong with your animal. Veterinarian was caring and curious of my pet keeping so they can find out what I may be doing wrong, expect to talk to the vet on the phone nonetheless it was a good visit.
This is the BEST place to take your birds in Manhattan. The Center is clean and cheerful. The staff is responsive, kind and they have great senses of humor. The doctors are experts -- we always feel in good hands taking our two parakeets here. We are so grateful that CAEM exists!
This is the best place. theyre so knowledgeable about rats (probably all avian and exotic animals) and they not only know and help, but they genuinely care so much. they make it super easy to book appointments and even keep in touch to see how your pets doing, whens convenient for you, and give pet lifestyle/health advice too if you ask them. we live about an hour away by subway but we still go because theyre the best and our rats feel most comfortable there (compared to other vets). cannot endorse this place enough
I have been bringing my parrots here for over ten years. I have also boarded my Sennie here. Wonderful office staff, vet techs and doctors. Very, very flexible for avian emergency appointments. These folks know what they are doing and really take an interest in your companions well being. My only regret is that several of the doctors have left over the years. Still, they are extremely competent docs and techs. I used to bring my birds to NYCs Animal Medical Center (20 yrs ago) - they were amazing; and because it is a teaching hospital, my vets would come and go. However, I always felt like my parrots and I were just numbers and that no one knew me. It is a very large hospital but it was missing something with some staff. That is at least my experience. When recession was rough - they closed the Exotics Dept and I had to find out about it from a parrot group online after the fact. Very bad and inconsiderate. Im very happy to have nestled in to The Center for my babies well being. I always know they are un good hands.
Have brought my guinea pig Joey here multiple times! They have treated us with so much care, and have taken care of Joey when he had Upper Respiratory Infections, needed to be boarded, and when he needed his nails clipped. The center is a bit pricey, but not anymore than you would expect to pay at a vet in New York City, and they are so knowledgeable on care of exotics, especially small animals. They are 100% worth it.
Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine is the most caring group of people. I came to them a few years ago with a late emergency and they took care of my baby right away. I have stayed with them ever since. They are thorough, professional and incredibly knowledgeable. AND - they do it all with heart. I would not trust my fur babies (bunnies) with anyone else. CAEM has really been there for me.
Lack of compassion and bedside manner. I brought my 6 year old pet to be euthanized and waited outside (COVID regulations) for over an hour. I was nervous, hoping the euthanasia went smoothly and my pet didnt suffer. I got a call that it was ready to pick up at the table outside as if I ordered a pastrami sandwich. They handed us the pet and went back inside. No condolences, no bedside manner, total lack of professionalism. I even called back to ask if the vet was going to call me to tell me about the procedure, left two messages, never received a callback. I called the next day as well and told them how I felt saddened about this lack of communication. Guess what, STILL wasnt given their condolences. Stay away from this place. Cant image what response they will have to this comment that will justify their lack of empathy.
The staff is great and friendly, when I took my rabbit here they all showed him just as much love as I did. I wish they did better with medicating the animals though and getting a more in depth diagnosis. About 2 years ago I took in my rabbit to regular check ups and the last time to treat a rash I noticed on him, I followed all the procedure on how to medicate my rabbit exactly as they told me to and even bought a plastic cone to prevent him from picking at it.I wanted to bring him back in to follow up and couldnt get service because the office was flooded somehow and they couldnt take any patients for a week or so. The medication didnt really help, it healed the rash my rabbit had but he stopped eating and drinking water suddenly after the medication. I even missed school a few days to make sure I was looking after him and trying to get him to eat and drink but he went from taking minimal food and drink to nothing at all and was just lethargic.I still couldnt bring him to the office so I had to take him on emergency to an animal hospital, there they told me that he was very dehydrated and had bowel issues. The animal hospital told me that I could leave him hospitalized there but that it didnt guarantee that he would get better. It would be over over 1,000 to had have him treated just to hydrate him and not necessarily to find out what was wrong with him, they just said rabbits develop digestive problems easily and it would be hard to come back from it, because of that I had to make one of the most heartbreaking decisions and he was put down all of this within 5 days time.I think maybe if the center had been working at the time I could have gotten him treated earlier for whatever issues he had internally but ultimately I really dont know what the cause of this was because to me it was just the rash and thats what the antibiotics and medicated ointment was for. My rabbit just had a rash when I took him in and then from there it turned to the worst experience ever.Regardless, I would recommend the center for regular check ups, for more in depth animal health analyses I suggest go elsewhere. I dont know of any other places though and to this day I chose not to have any exotic pets because I do not want to have to go through something like that again.
I had a lovely time here! The staff were amazing and adorable with their enthusiasm. All the animals in the office looked extremely healthy and looked after. When it was my turn, I was taken into a room and the nurse and doctor helped to explain for every question I had. They made sure to be thorough and afterwards I was even sent articles to read for extra info. Great service and I will definitely come back here again!!
This place has been treating my rabbit for many years. The care is great, I never question that, he went through a lot there and was helped through. My only reason for not giving a five is that the bedside manner can be a little cold. Whilst I fully admit there was a time I was very rude, and they helped me out, I will say that the bedside manner can leave a lot to be desired as can the wait time even for emergency appointments. I’ve also had the wrong medication, for a different species. But again, having said that, the care given was always good and one tech delivered meds to my door after they forgot to send me home with them. That’s truly appreciated and he went out of his way.The last day was tragic, not being with my boy, he quickly passed, and being made to sit in the street with his body. I’d hoped to have heard from the office with condolences after so many year, and a little more compassion for those in this position, dignity for the pets, but Covid has changed the world.Ten years fighting together and thanks to CAEM who tried.
Truly one of the best animal care facilities in New York. Everyone is so professional but also kind and compassionate. They make each visit as stress free as possible. Dr. Pilny in particular is exceptional and we actually look forward to each visit with him. Not only are they outstanding medical professionals but they also provide shelter and care for creatures that need a home until they are adopted. Our bunny was one of their rescues and he has continually received expert care since. AAA+++
I absolutely love this place. They took care of my guinea pig Rogue who I bought from a pet shop. Turned out she was pregnant! They checked her for everything and gave me the information I needed to care for her and her babies. Next door to them is a dog and cat vet which is like their sister company. I fully plan to take my beagle there next month.Yes they are expensive, but when you buy an animal you expect there to be costs that are unplanned. I had no problem paying them for their services. They even called a week later to be sure Rogue was alright! My own doctor doesnt even do that!
I love this place. I have a rescued cockatiel that is physically challenged. I have been taking him here annually for his yearly checkup. One time He flew into a wall and seemed to crack his bill. I call the Center and spoke to a nurse who told me what I should do under this circumstance. It really helped. Two days later they called me back to see how he was doing... I really loved their followup. and concern.
I went in recently because my guinea pig had developed a tumor. I have been to other vets before and I would describe the care here at slightly below standard, the interactions with staff to be poor and the price point to be about 3 to 4 that of other vets. When we came in for the appointment the office seemed nice. We showed up 10 minutes early but were not seen by a vet tech until about 15 minutes after our appointment (25 minutes after we arrived). The tech was friendly and went about his business quickly. The doctor then came in and spent less than 10 minutes with us. He was somewhat standoffish. I understand that as a vet (much like being a pediatrician) that the goal is to please me and not the animal. But he never once greeted or talked to the pig. Other vets I have gone to always greet me and then greet the animal. And talk to the animal to sooth them while examing them. I felt my pig was being treated like a farm animal, not a beloved pet.I asked for an estimate for the suggested surgery and the vet said he would be back shortly with an estimate. About 10 minutes later the tech came back with the paperwork. It seems strange to me that the vet would not do this himself. When I had questions about the estimate the tech had to relay messages back and forth between the vet and me. At this price point, I expect better service.I would recommend going to the exotics team at the Animal Medical Center. Not only are their vets consistent (not random subs like here) they actually care about the animals they are treating.
Ten stars! They were so amazing with my love Bellini, the while lop-eared bunny. They give first-class service and the staff is amazing! They go above and beyond. Even the towel they wrapped my bunny in was so soft and smelled so good! The care they gave him in his last days is a forever comfort to my heart. I am especially grateful to Dr. Pilny and the entire team!
The care that my very sick parrot received was excellent. Although they were never able to tell why she had a terrible seizure, after treatment she bounced back . I had another emergency soon after (her toe) and she was very well taken cared of for that as well. Dr. Brown is excellent, very caring and very generous with her knowledge and time. The only reason I did not give CAEM a review of five stars was the cost (ooph) but I have to remind myself this is a very specialized field and these doctors have studied for years and years. The support staff is fantastic, the ladies in reception are very sweet and attentive and the wonderful crew of vet techs are superb. Best place in town for you bird in need.
This was my first time to the center. I could not have been more impressed, from the front desk to the tech to the vet herself. The procedures were well done in the time of COVID, and the doctor was very thorough when she phoned me and answered all of my questions. I had some concerns about administering eyedrops and oral meds to my hamster, and a wonderful tech came out (all while deftly turning away curious children on the street) to show me exactly what to do. They also devised a new method of administering eyedrops for me when I expressed concern about how large the drops were vs. the little hamster eyes! Ive seen several exotics specialists at suburban vets, but I cannot emphasize the difference of going somewhere with a team of caring, experienced specialists. I wish I had known about this place earlier. Thank you to all of the amazing staff!
London , and Leo (my male rabbits) and I love Avian and Exotic Medicine! The staff is super friendly and the doctors are fantastic. I have brought both in over the last 6 years for multiple issues and all have been solved. Notably, London was sick with snuffles that would not go away when he was a baby! Dr. Wilson and I communicated about multiple solutions to help him, and finally we were able to cure him of it. Not only did she respond quickly to calls, but e-mails as well. I know this isnt always the case with bunnies, and their health is very fragile at times, but the thorough care has prevented further problems with my lovely boys. I would highly recommend CAEM to anyone in NYC who wants excellent care for their exotic pets.
I found The Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine through Google since Sydney, my 16 year old cockatiel was very lethargic and not eating. As a first-time client/ patient with a very sick bird, the receptionist booked an immediate appointment. Dr. Grodio initially took Sydneys vitals, explained symptoms and recommended a step-by-step work-up to see what findings are revealed to diagnose, along with an up-front estimate (low-high costs) for full disclosure of costs. Sydney stayed under Dr. Wilsons care for two nights, with the Drs daily updates on Sydneys progress. Everyone in the office was very professional and compassionate to both Sydney and me. I am very grateful for all they did for Sydney. I highly recommend this office and lifelong medical check-ups and care for your bird, small animals.
Took my ferret here a while ago to check out something, didnt take too long till they could see me. They certainly love what they do there and are very passionate about the animals. It was my first time at the vet and It made me feel so much more comfortable and confident in their service just how they handled my fur baby alone.
Friendly and professional. Brought both my chinchilla and ferret here and have been extremely happy with the doctors, techs and all the support staff. Reasonably priced.Extremely patient, caring and gentle with my animals, even my ferret, who can be a handful. Cannot recommend enough.
I am not sure where all these wonderful reviews are coming from, or they simply have the staff write them. I had 2 guinea pigs within a months time die after surgery at this place. The second pig I NEVER saw the doctor. A staff member took my pig in the back and the next day when I picked him up another tech brought him out.I called the morning I was to pick him up three times and was told I would receive a call back about his status. Ninety minutes later and NO CALL!Finally after carrying on and demanding to speak to someone I was told pick your pig up by 2 we are having an event here today! Upon arrival the front office was full of boxes and set ups for a Teach Your Bird how to Play exhibit, while my pig was who knows where. Again, I picked him up and NEVER SPOKE TO NOR SAW A DOCTOR. They made sure to charge my credit card asap. That they know how to do.How do you do surgery and not call the owner? How do you charge 700 for surgery and not once see nor speak to a doctor?Ohhh thats right, I was told they were understaffed because another doctor was on maternity leave too long and this doctor was over burdened.Every time I called to state my pig didnt look good, was losing weight, etc and tried to get an appointment I was told the earliest was next week! Both my pigs are dead. I called last week for an appointment and was given this coming Sunday. I explained he was losing weight. He didnt look good and nothing.Do yourself a favor and do not bring your sick Guinea Pig to this office, or they will be dead within two weeks.
Ive had parrots for 24 years and lived in different parts of NYC, so Ive been to 3 different Avian practices in this time. Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine is my favorite so far. Their vets and techs are compassionate, knowledgeable, and happy to answer my questions. Their staff is friendly and welcoming. They asked me to make an appointment (this was not an emergency) and took me and my bird on time! I didnt feel like I was in a factory.
I brought my guinea pig here instead of to the local vet because the CAEM specializes in small mammals -- sadly, the local vet doesnt treat cavies with as much care as dogs or cats.im grateful to everyone at CAEM for excellent communication throughout the whole process. they took time to go over my piggys condition (a URI causing his runny nose) and discuss his general living conditions, addressed all costs up front, and followed up the next day; dr. grodio has been extremely attentive and quick to address any questions.i was nervous because my pig is extremely anxious when around strangers and hates being handled, AND (during this pandemic) i would have to leave him on a desk outside the center for someone to retrieve while i stood away. but there was no problem. he wasnt left out in the cold (he was taken in immediately), and he was clucking happily when i picked him up.im happy to have found a vet i can trust. thanks, CAEM staff, for taking good care of my little dude!
I’m so glad that this center exists!! My Fur baby Navi who is a Holland lop has been taking care of by the avian center and I’m beyond amazed by the care and generosity we receive each time we have a visit. Not to long ago my baby developed a cyst on his right cheek and the teams skills and fast action was able to treat him with no complications at all. Always a phone call away. Over all ever since I got my Navi (2years ago) This is always my #1 go to place. The staff is beyond friendly and helpful, I feel secure knowing that my Navi will Always have great care here because the Doctor’s are specialized in his or any exotic pet’s care. Thank you everyone at the The Center For Avian & Exotic Medicine for all your help.
First - I’m going to talk about the good. Aeri was probably the only saving grace of this place. So thank you to her for making my horrible experience a little less horrible. High level overview - some rude staff, bad bedside manner, high costs, and read more below.PLEASE READ BELOW FOR SPECIFICS1. Dr. Cleary finally calls us 1.5 hrs into her appt and tells us that they had a little accident while my turtle was waiting to be seen. My turtle got out of her carrier and fell off a table and broke her shell. When I dropped her off - I mentioned that she was an escape artist and that she tried to escape in the car. He went through all the information and honestly made it seem pretty bad. He started telling us all the things that could happen but made it seem as if it would happen. If you went into the hospital with chest pain - the doctor wouldn’t tell you that you’re going to have a heart attack and die. You take it step by step and go from there. He said there is a high chance that the turtles shell will completely fall off (which it didn’t). He told me he didn’t want me to feel slighted so they’re going to cover the portion of the fracture (I mean this is obvious though right?)2. Inconsistencies: At first, they told us we can take her home and do the injections ourselves but then they came back said she needed to be hospitalized. Dr. Clearly told us that most turtles in her state are likely to go south fast - yes, our turtle was sick but she was VERY lively and eating VERY well. On her discharge papers, they wrote that she had anemia but when they first told me the results of the blood test, they didn’t mention anemia. In fact they told me that her bloodwork was normal (I have the email). They also wrote in the discharge papers that she may never grow again but she has gained considerable weight since. During her follow up they said she gained 30g.3. We decided to forego some of the tests since they were going to start on her treatments regardless of the diagnostics that we would get from the tests. The prices were also pretty steep and we didn’t exactly want to come back here but kind of felt like we had no choice but to leave her here. After our follow up, we’ve decided to bring her elsewhere to do the tests and we probably will never ever come back here again. BEWARE OF THIS.4. This is probably the main reason we won’t come back. Lorelei. She was rude, condescending, dismissive and also patronized me. She gave us a really sad apology for dropping my turtle and made it seem like it wasn’t a big deal at all. She is honestly unprofessional and really needs to learn a little something from Aeri.Anyways, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. I am writing this review because I want you to be cautious. Read the other bad reviews, everyone pretty much feels the same. They day we came to pick up our turtle, there was another family there and they said “I don’t like them. They’re rude”Also, Lorelei will probably respond to this and argue otherwise but oh wells.
Dr Renna makes recommendations but she doesn’t upsell me. I’m way too vulnerable with my little guy when it comes to his care. I like that she doesn’t take advantage of that and I trust her judgment. Also, I can tell if Mello is stressed after coming back from a place. He never runs under the bed when we get home from CAEM so I trust the staff’s integrity to take good care of him when I’m not there.
Ive been going to this place since 2016. Was referred to them by a Vet in Westchester, NY where I live as my Guinea Pig Snowys condition required an exotics Vet. Have taken my other two Guinea Pigs here since then as well. They are very professional, polite but above all, highly trained in treating exotic animals. While it is a long trip to go into Manhattan, I make the trip whenever needed as I trust them with my babies who mean the world to me! They are also great with providing comfort and exceptional service as you prepare to say goodbye to your fur babies which Ive had to do.
Ive had two guinea pigs and a rabbit in to this location. Each time has been amazingly easy. They took very good care of my guinea pig during his nurturing (Which was cheaper for their monthly promotion-look into it, its a great deal!). When I need a vet this is where I go!
The IDEA of any person giving less than a perfect score and rave reviews could only be given by those folks who are never happy with anything, or ever owned a pet. They must have been expecting free pedicures or silk pillows in the waiting room.Ive studied and owned exotic animals for 35 YEARS. Ive had MANY Vets and Ive never experienced from SEVERAL Vets the high quality service and knowledge from just this one office. These people are ASTOUNDING! To find polite, connected with your pet and WELL informed people at such an AMAZINGLY low cost, especially in NYC is so reassuring! You KNOW youre in good hands and your pet literally is. Youll no longer worry about emergencies or apathy or financially wishing you had no pets at all. These people improve the lives of exotic pet owners and lovers in this City, just by BEING there! The Drs are published and Dr. Pilny is a professor, so they dont just practice out of love or interest. I dont know about you, but I want the smartest and best medical care giver there is. For my pets exams, blood work or diagnostic tests to be done by these people makes me feel like Ive given my beloved pets the best care I could provide them. The calm, professional and knowledgeable staff makes you feel like youre in the right place before you even take a seat in the waiting room. ....but, no silk pillows.
Ive been going to the Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine for my pet geckos for over a year. They are very helpful and informed about caring for my pets. Its easy to schedule an appointment, especially if its an emergency and the doctors are also accessible via email. I have a great experience every time I see them.
The entire team at CAEM is top notch! They were so amazing, caring and loving not only towards my Ollie Bear (ferret) but towards me as well. Unfortunately, Ollie is no longer with us due to congestive heart failure, however Dr. Cleary and the rest of the team we’re absolutely amazing and gave him the best clinical care I could of asked for. Not only did Dr. Cleary make himself available after hours but the nurses and front desk receptionist talked me off the edge multiple times after I’d call crying and worried about Ollie’s clinical signs. Big shoutout to Tracy too!
When I moved to the UWS, I was thrilled to be in such close proximity to CAEM. As the owner of two guinea pigs, having a vet close by was a boon. The staff here took excellent care of Farley, and were kind and communicative , and very supportive when he passed over while fighting illness. I will be forever grateful for their compassion to us both. Dr. Wilson was extremely honest and upfront with me about the care Farley needed both times I brought him in, and Im very grateful to Dr. Cleary for doing his best to save him.
I do not own birds, or reptiles, so I cannot review the vets that partake in those specialties. I do own 3 rabbits though, 2 of which were spayed and nuetered, and recieved the best care with good instructions. The vet kept contact throughout their stay, and both made an excellent recovery. The 3rd rabbit got his checkup, and for his surgery I will be taking him here. When it comes to rabbits, they really know what theyre doing.
The staff is always efficient, accommodating when possible my schedule for the grooming care of my Senegal parrot Urby Bird. Dr. Wilson, who does the annual checkups lately is thoughtful and helpful. Urby bird, at 28, has always been healthy, thank heavens, though she has cataracts now and is slightly less active as a result.
I unfortunately had a very unpleasant experience in seeking care for my rabbit. Dr. Wilson was rude, condescending, and offensive suggesting that because my bunny in her care had dental disease, I wasnt able to properly care for my other animals, referencing rabbit rescues I should reach out to for help. She additionally mentioned other clients only groom their long-hair breeds every 2-3 months, which is very dangerous behavior to condone due to potentially life-threatening issues that can arise from such behavior.Adding further insult to injury, when I reached out with feedback the practice owner said she was sure I misunderstood and thought it best I not come back for services. If Dr. Wilson routinely suggests clients give their other animals to local rescue groups then sure, I misunderstood but if not... her behavior was wildly unprofessional and disturbing, especially given my rabbits have more space, interaction, cuddles and exercise time than those displayed in the front window of their own office. And lastly, the review the practice *requested* I leave on their site was deleted, so Im posting it here as well.I wont be trusting them with my pets again and am exceptionally disappointed not only in the attitude of the doctor, but of the practice manager as well.EDIT: To your comment on this review:1. My initial review, nor any since, have contained ANY abusive language, cursing, or personal insults. I simply outlined the intensely offensive tone your staff took during our visit. The tone of this review is the exact same as the original, and if its offensive its because of the comments made by your employees.2. You and your staff are sadly lying that I expressed ANY concern over an ability to take care of my animals. That was a preconceived notion the doctor had walking into the appointment, talking about my other rabbits for at least 15 minutes before even acknowledging the rabbit that was in front of her for care. Ive had these beautiful animals for years and have happily provided excellent care for them that entire time —evidenced by my long history with other veterinary clinics and my $2k + commitment to the rabbit in your care.3. The other rabbits I have are not large- you also just made that up. They are small English angoras.4. Your claims that the doctor only mentioned rabbit rescues because I asked are not only A. completely false but B. erroneous in logic. Question: what excuse will you offer for her discussing a snake hoarding client? That perhaps I somehow asked for an anecdotal tale about a snake hoarder? Answer: No such questions or concerns were asked; the doctor walked into the appointment with a baseless, wildly inaccurate agenda.5. They are not in a basement dwelling- they are in an insulated, heated, cooled building again with enclosures that are larger than those rabbits on display in your office.6. Your comments on this review, and your comments on many other reviews from disappointed customers, clearly show your strategy is to attack and villianze any customer who publicly vocalizes unpleasant experiences. And your public disclosure of any animals medical history on the internet *without consent* is shameful, if not much more.
I took my cockatiel Ripley here today after he was not feeling well for a fewdays. The desk staff was extremely friendly! We got in early in the morning for our appointment at 10 and were seen right away! The doctor and nurse were very professional with Ripley and even gave him a free wing trim to even out his wings. He had a fecal smear done and an x-ray to make sure that nothing was wrong. Turns out he had eaten something that was stuck in his gullet. Dr. Pilny said everything looked fine otherwise so to try a little peanut butter since unnecessary medication might stress him out. All in all great medical attention, you could tell they really cared about my bird and they didnt break my wallet. I only paid $202 for the visit. If you want amazing care for your birds with people who love your pets as much as you do, go here! You wont regret it!
I take my blue fronted amazon here. They are amazing with him and really know what they are doing. They answer my questions very thoroughly. Ive brought him here twice so far. Once for a check up and again for a sick visit. They really care about the animals and dont want to nickel and dime you. I know my Floyd is in good hands.
Center for Avian and Exotic Medicine has taken excellent care of my pets. They are very knowledgeable and provide an extensive array of services for exotic animals (reptiles in my case). Dr. Wilson has been wonderful with my iguana and she is incredibly knowledgeable about them.
This is literally the number 1 place that I trust with my furry rabbit children. In comparison to other exotic vet offices in New Jersey in what--not it is considered pricey. That being said, this office is the home of some extraordinary doctors who are arguably at the top of their fields in exotic treatment. They are caring. Very personable! They definitely care about every single client they see. When I wanted a second bunny for my bun, they referred me to All About Rabbits Rescue. That agency was awesome at meeting my needs (and I am very needy), being flexible, testing their bunnies for coccidia, so I was really happy with CAEM for the referral. CAEM is overall such an amazing haven for exotics. They have amazing vets, friendly reception, clean offices, my buns absolutely love CAEM.
Dr Wilson saved my African grey Rustys life. Shes an excellent vet!Lorelei Tibbitts, the facility manager & veterinary technician is unfailingly helpful & professional. My 28 year old asthmatic greenwing macaw, Mojo, gets excellent ongoing care.I refer people & their parrot friends there always. As the former owner of Urban Bird, which was NYCs only State licensed parrot breeding facility & parrots only retail store, Urban Bird, Im very knowledgable about parrots,I can categorically applaud Center for Avian & Exotics. The staff is helpful & patient & the atmosphere is friendly & always calm & welcoming.I highly recommend CAEM for all your exotic pet veterinary encounters. You can trust them!
The Center for Avian & Exotic Medicine is a first-rate veterinary medical center, and a labor of love. All the staff are caring and empathic to animals and their humans. Dr. Lyle Cleary, who saw my blue and gold macaw Harold for digestive issues, is a smart critical-thinker with a nuanced and holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment (and he generously provided thoughtful, detailed replies to my many obsessive emails after the visit). Lorelei the Bird Whisperer was brought in to groom Harold’s beak and nails, and she charmed him. All in all a great place that I will use for all Harold’s future health care needs.
I have a rabbit that Ive taken here twice urgently when she was sick and not eating. Both times they saw her quickly, given that I didnt have an appointment. I saw Dr. Wilson today and she was wonderful with my rabbit and explained everything that was going on with her, the treatment options, and what the next step would be if she got worse. They were on a short list of excellent vets recommended by The House Rabbit Society and theyve completely lived up to their recommendation. The services are a little expensive, but you are seeing a doctor/surgeon for medical treatment!! I would definitely pay the extra fee to see a vet that is experienced with rabbits rather than a generalist that mostly sees cats and dogs. That being said, you can get spay/neuter at the Humane Society on 59th street for much less, but the rabbit doctor is only there a few days a week and not afterhours. This is definitely the place I will go for all of my urgent care needs.
Sorry to say, my granddaughter had no luck with this Vet care. She took her pet Gecko last week, for treatment due to an abscess on his hind leg, and not moving his bowls or eating, they drain the abscess, and gave medications. But a week later her beloved pet passed away. The 2nd Gecko that passed away within weeks after being taken to this vet place. My granddaughter is heart broken. No more pets for her. Can’t say this place helped at all, and don’t recommend either. Very sad! 😥
The Best care for my Red Earred Slider!!! If you have an exotic pet use THIS exotics vet. Very professional, nice support staff! After wasting money on a vet that knew nothing about turtles I stayed away from them for a few years. I am so glad I took a chance on this practice. I highly recommend The Center for Avian And Exotic Medicine.
I had 2 good experiences here. Yesterday I was scared my finch was sick & I thought she wasnt going to make it. they took my finch in right away. Found out she just couldnt lay her egg but they were very helpful & informative. My finch is so much better now, shes back to normal& 2 weeks ago I brought my bearded dragon for the 1st time everyone here was pretty nice & helped me out with my concerns. I will definitely be coming back here!
Extremely happy with the Center for Avian & Exotic Medicine!!! I brought my lovebird to them who was really sick and they nursed him back to health and treated him with the utmost care!!!!! The doctors were fabulous!!!! My lovebird was seen by Dr. Cleary and Dr. Grodio!! They are awesome!!!! The staff was amazing!!!!So glad I found them!!!!
11/2019: First time seeking a consultation/second opinion for my bird and we appreciate these guys so much. The staff made us feel comfortable, answered all of our questions, gave us suggestions/choices which did not feel forced. My bird is doing much better but not completely out of the woods as yet. They actually took the time out to call and follow up with us yesterday and that call meant so much. Thank you all a lot from Kiwi’s family!UPDATE : Kiwi is doing great. Talking up a storm and very active. He wouldnt have been here if it werent for CAEM.
My budgerigar Goldie (7.5 years old) suddenly produced an egg she couldnt pass, thus threatening her little life. Thanks to the CAEM I was able to take her home in good apparent health. I felt that I was in good hands the entire time. This is a particularly stressful time and a particularly sensitive area of life (ones home companions), and I will state that CAEM made things better for me, with great thanks.
Many years ago. My African Grey was attacked from our Cockatoo. She had a deep wound under her foot that required stitches and her beak was fractured to the point where the top beak was split in two bleeding profusely. When we rushed her to a Vet in N.J there was nothing they could do and put in a call to this Center. It was around 7 pm or so and were about to close soon. They remained open especially for us and an avian vet was called in to see our bird! It took us about 45 min to travel there. They immediately gave her medical attention and kept her over night. I learned later that Rosie, my Grey began bleeding profusely during the middle of the night and again, the Vet rushed back to the office to take care of her. This weekend, we are taking in another parrot due to illness....this place , staff and Vets do an amazing job and we highly reccomend them
Great avian vet! The waiting room is not crowded and since they are avian/exotic specialists, there are no dogs and cats in the waiting room, which can easily stress a bird. Very caring and attentive to the animals, intuitive to their feelings and potential anxiety. Not inexpensive, but competitive with other specialty vets.
Through the years, Ive brought many birds to the Center to treat a wide range of disorders. Ive always been pleased with the care taken to diagnosis a variety of conditions. On occasion follow -up surgeries have been necessary. My animals have always been well tended to.
They may have wonderful vets but the girl who answered the phone just now was extremely rude..... $120 for an annual exam is a requirement to get a nail trim which you then have to pay for. When I questioned the receptionist about the policy, she acted annoyed. Not everyone can afford all prices. Answering questions is the job!
I have gone to CAEM for years for the care of my rabbits. Going to a rabbit specialist is imperative as a bun owner. The care they offer is superb. Dr. Pilny is the perfect mix of clinical expertise and practical knowledge. I have also boarded my pets there when I travel. I have never encountered a staff member who wasnt kind and compassionate. As long as CAEM is in business they will be my preferred choice of pet care provider.
My pet bunny, Ivy, recently decided to get very, very sick several times in two months. Avian and Exotics took excellent care of us. Ivy often went in as an ER and was always seen quickly. The staff are friendly and genuinely care. They were upfront with diagnosis and treatment options, cost estimates, and never made me feel as if I were over reacting. Katie-Jo and Dr. Brown even stayed late one night so I could bring Ivy in. Ivy and I would like to say a special thanks to Dr. Brown, Katie-Jo, and Anita.
I have been using Center for Avian and Exotics for three years + . They are amazing and extremely knowledgable about exotics. We have used them for exotic snakes, turtles and ferrets. There is no one I trust more with my exotics. Thank You for caring for our animals.
The Center is an amazing place! Since it opened I have been bringing my sun conure in for events as simple as a regular nail trim or as complex as a medical emergency, The staff is amazing -- thoughtful -- professional. The medical attention could not be better. My sun is a chronic egg-layer and on more than one occasion, this has presented serious problems. I honestly do not know how I would have handled some of these situations without the care and expertise I find at the Center. It is an extraordinary place and I am so lucky and relieved to know it is always there for me and for my bird.
Dr. Grodio is a wonderful, caring Vet. I would highly recommend seeing her for your pet health needs. She always makes me and my turtles comfortable. Always highly informative and shows care to your pet. She always interacts with my mikey (box turtle) and not just me which is a plus. I hope she never leaves :)
The best service and care for my 20 year old young African Grey parrot. The staff is kind and clear about proper care for my bird. Dr. Pilny is world class and for sure just a little Dr. Doolittle with my bird. Incredible to have a world class Avian vet a hop, skip and a fly away! Thanks CAEM!!
We have been to this place for years and really liked the doctors and staff up till last week when we had a very bad experience. My husband took our guinea pig in last Thursday to see Dr. Maidhof. Dr. Maidhof is a new doctor that we did not know of and we did not see his bio on the website. Our guinea pig ate and drank less, continued gaining weight and had blood in her stool. After examining her briefly, Dr. Maidhof informed my husband that he needed to do an ultrasound to get more information. He did not tell him what he might be able to find and what solutions that we could get. He suggested that we give her pain medication to reduce her pain caused by urethra stone (old issue that was seen by Dr. Kramer in early February). He also mentioned that medication could only make her feel better temporarily. Dr. Maidhof was not able to answer questions regard to her current issues. He kept saying its up to you and urged my husband to make the decision. He then told my husband the prices of medication and procedure. How could we make any decision without getting any answers from the doctor? Feeling lost and uncertain, we decided to bring our pig home and maybe search for other choices.Right after the appointment, I called and mentioned that we did not receive quality service as before with Dr. Pily. We came home feeling lost. I asked to speak to the manager and was told she was on vacation. Rachel, the receptionist, told me she will report to the front desk manager and maybe get us in to see Dr. Wilson. She said she will get back to me soon.No phone call at all. Friday morning, our guinea pig looked very weak. So my husband called and asked for medication. Dr. Wilson simply approved the medication that Dr. Maidhof suggested and was not able to discuss further. She said take the medication and meet with her in two weeks to follow up. The front desk called my husband and told him the medication are ready to be picked up after 2:30. I got to the center around 4:30. Medication was not ready. How could it take so long to prepare two small tubes of medication? If the medication is not ready, why would you call and say it would be ready by 2:30!!?? No one could explain the medication to me or answer any questions because they were busy and they said I already knew how to use it from the past experiences. I mentioned to the front desk I would still like to speak to the manager about the poor service. She said she would take a note and have the manager call me back.We gave one dose of medication to our beloved guinea pig on Friday night and she passed away early Saturday morning. We were heart broken and shocked. Still not knowing what the problem was. It seems like the doctors kept thinking it was her cyst/tumor/urethra stone that we needed to fix but never thought about URI because they never made a complete exam. We noticed she made clicking sounds when she exhaled after she came home from the vet. It was our bad that we did not notice it sooner and had no knowledge about it at that time. But wouldnt a doctor notice it if he did a full exam? Or try to think all of the possible reasons that make a pig ill?We know nothing would have changed anyway and also knew that her time with us would have been very short given to her past medical history. What disappointed us the most was the poor service we got, 1) doctors did not seem to understand guinea pigs well and did not do a full examination (we know what it is like because we went there so often in the past when we saw Dr. Pilny), 2) the manager never called back at all, or maybe she is still on vacation, 3) medication was not ready and no nurses could explain medication or answer questions. It is really sad to see a place we loved became like this. I am not sure about how they treated other pets but we would consider other vet for our guinea pig. We would also remind people who want to go there to make sure which doctors you will see before you go in and do a full research about your pets illness beforehand. And think twice if you want to bring your guinea pigs there!
My experience with Center For Avian& Exotic Medicine been excellent staff and veterinarian doctors are amazing. They provide information on daily basis about pet condition and treatments .Thank you to Doctor Lyle Cleary and Alix Wilson they the best they are extremely professional and provide world class client service.
Never use this vet, they do unnecessary tests, xrays, and procedures to rack up the bills, then if something goes wrong you will never hear from them, from personal experience and 2 friends who have lost 3 rabbits at this place. how do rabbits get sick from boarding, and checking out sore hocks. not only did they get rabbits killed, they would ignore you after and demand to bill you after your rabbit die from that place

2021-08-26This has been my vet for Ollie since he was a baby and he turned 12 over the summer. I can’t imagine going anywhere else. I’ve seen many interns and students pass through here before and during vet school who have helped care for Ollie during check-in and boarding. The front desk staff is awesome - I love Tracy! This is really his extended family and I place a lot of confidence and trust in them to care for Ollie! If you have a bird or any exotic animal that is out of the norm, or you find an exotic bird or animal that is loose, contact them immediately. You and the animal(s) couldn’t be in better hands!

2022-03-03My bird had issues with egg laying and a prolapsed cloacea. The animal medical center said that i should consider euthanasia if she did not lay her eggs in 48 hrs. I brought her here for a second opinion and they said that she was not at the point of euthanasia. They were able to remove 2 eggs and send her home with meds. This is her when i brought her home! The staff was great and the vets were caring and amazing at what they do!

2022-04-10Lets me start of by saying I have never been here. Unfortunately I had an medical emergency with my Rabbit. Trying to find a facility that wasnt slammed by reviews calling them money goblins I was recommended this center. After reading the reviews this was the only place that had mostly positive reviews. I scheduled an appointment immediately and paid the non refundable pet registration free for new clients. They told me over the phone that this price would go towards my emergency visits fee which I thought was great I wasnt getting doubled charged.Getting my Rabbit in the cage and then in the car deemed to stressful for her and she passed away on the way there. When I contacted this center the person on the phone seemed to actually feel sorry unlike other centers. She provided me with information about what to do next. After the phone call I also noticed they refunded me the money I paid for the registration which I was assumed was lost since it was labeled non refundable. Not only that they sent my GF a wonderful card to her house giving their condolences.I just want to thank everyone that works at this center because they showed our family amazing support and care even though we never technically visited the place. I hope this place nothing but the best and for other centers to learn from them.

2022-08-25I took my Guinea Pig due to he was sneezing, coughing and lost of appetite. The doctor didn’t even take more than 10 minutes when he had diagnosed him with URI. It has been almost 2 weeks and he’s still sick even when drinking the antibiotics he had prescribed. I called him a few times and he still hasn’t returned my called. He had an emailed that address is not found. I don’t have anyway of communicating with him. I thought my Guinea Pig was in the perfect care due to the reviews I saw. I live in Far Rockaway and no Exotic Vets near me. I took him on the trip to Manhattan. The doctor prescribed the medication for 2 weeks I only got a small bottle 10 days. Calling for refills no one has return my call. The representative always tell me a nurse is going to return my call. I’m still waiting . My en voice said he got his nails trimmed. This picture says a lot, no one trimmed his nails.

2022-03-03This is my go to vet for my furry potatoes needs. Warning though...they are VERY expensive. But the way I see it, its better to not have pets at all if you cant afford to take care of them. Even though theyre pricey, I know my pets are always well taken care of when I bring them there. I also really appreciate them checking up on my pets after theyve left the facility. I like their level of customer service. I recommend them just be ready to take out a loan or use your credit card.

2022-08-11Had a great experience with this exotic animal vet clinic! You can tell that the front counter employees, nurses, and doctors really care for their furry patients and are passionate at what they do. I booked an emergency appointment for my guinea pig as he was developing a respiratory infection. It’s not cheap by any means ($400+ for a nasal swab test, emergency visit fees, antibiotics, and critical care foods) but you get what you pay for.

2022-08-22Its a beautiful place and location inside. Made us feel welcomed and did a great job on our bunny. However, after hearing some prices of some of the simple procedures just by people walking in and asking how much. I was a bit put of. They are the only exotic animal place in Manhattan, since theres no competition they can charge an arm and leg and no one bats an eye. The whole we have Credit to help pay that. Ahh no thanks, not everyone has the means to pay $900 bucks at a whim like one guy did while I was there. For those who can afford it , by all means go and have top service but for those that cant go to New Jersey by train or even Long Island & that would much cheaper overall. The vet for the bunnies is very nice and informative.

2022-08-23They helped my daughters ( guinea pigs) so much. My poor babies had a life threatening illness. They are a bit expensive but they gave so much help, care, wonderful customer service. It like a dream come true. They saved my daughters lives. We love them and so thankful they take our questions with care and patience. We trust them so much i would recommend any to seek them for help.

2022-06-21Caveat : I’m a former exotic animal vet tech and trained wild bird rehabber.Place is clean, friendly and conveniently located. Appreciated being able to book an appt quickly for our little parrot to get a health check and various tests. We saw Dr Lyle - he and his tech were terribly thorough, compassionate and competent - fantastic job taking blood sample painlessly with zero bruising. Very communicative. Caring when it came to understanding our bird’s history and thinking about any needed improvements in husbandry. I’m very impressed. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars ? The price for services. Admittedly, I am new to NYC, and maybe these prices are just the norm in this insanely expensive city (and that might be the bitter pill to swallow with regard to many things). But it is very concerning to imagine what would happen if our bird actually had health issues (fortunately he is very healthy). I will look into pet insurance because I don’t think I could afford major treatments.

2022-04-19I have brought my bunny here for almost two years now, for services such as vaccinations, annual check-ups and boarding while I was on holiday. The employees are very nice and professional, and it is noticeable how much they care about the animals. I have always been very satisfied with the service received.
