The Custom House in other cities:
Custom House recently opened and they will be starting the full menu next week, but we had a few of their selections and they were all excellent! The beer selection is substantial and diverse. I had a Sloop East Coast IPA, which is cloudy and really good! We had the American burger and the Luau Burger, with bacon and pineapple, and nearly licked the plate clean. Loved this place, an easy recommendation.
Found this place while visiting family in NY. Loved the location (right on the canal) Our food was great and I loved how we could charge our phones right at the bar! Our server was prompt and I even saw the owner helping the staff bus tables and bring out orders. We didnt have time to go back for brunch, but it is definitely on our list for our next visit!
This is my first time going to the custom House I ordered mild chicken wings and the American burger I made sure I told the waiter well done but it came back rare it’s OK That didn’t make it a dealbreaker that much the waiter offered to refund me or make me another burger which was great and it was a great atmosphere it has outdoor seating by the canal which offer wonderful views of the canal bridge.
We went there for lunch to celebrate my husbands Birthday. We sat at the table for 5 min. It was not busy at all maybe 4 other people at the bar.Two other people came in and sat down and the waitress walked right by us and gave them menus and took their drink order. She came back with our menu and walked away.Another 5 min went by and asked us what we wanted to drink. We ordered draft blue and blue light we watched her poor canned beer into glasses brought them to our table and took our order. The other two customers recieved their food right after that with more drinks. Our glasses by that time were empty and off to the side so she could see them but walked by. 15 min later she walked by us and asked the other two customers if they wanted another drink and finally asked if I wanted a refill. I got my refill and then brought us our food. She forgot my blu cheese and brought me some no lid , blu cheese spilling out and put it on the table. She never came back to ask if everything was fine. My husband at that time needed another drink to have with his meal but she never came back so I shared mine with him. We watched an employee walk by and saw him pick up a piece of toilet paper that was in front of the bathroom he never washed his hands an went to the cooler and brought out some limes right after that. Our waitress was Heather L. We will not be going back. They dont even wash off the tables after customers.
Amazing food, great beer selection. Vegetarian and gluten free options as well. The staff was incredibly attentive and the owner even stopped by our table to ask us how our meal tasted. The patio by the canal is nice and they even have phone chargers and purse hooks at the bar. I love the remodel and will definitely be back!
Great atmosphere by the canal. Amazing service, very attentive despite understaffed issues.Food was phenomenal, some of the best Ive had in recent memory. I had the California tacos. Meat was cooked to perfection and each ingredient melted together toward a blissful serenade that even Gordon Ramsey would be proud of.
Great atmosphere with views of the canal with outdoor seating available. Food is well priced with generous servings and enticing flavor combinations. Friendly, busy waitresses were short staffed, but who isnt at the moment, and certainly hustled to make up for it.Arnold Schwarzenegger said it best, get to the chopper.....oops, I mean, Ill be back [again].
Odd service, by nice ladies. Maybe they were very new - the table wasnt wiped, had to ask utensils and napkins. Shrimp taco was fantastic! No sugarless ice tea. No hot tea. Canal side tables were good, but very noisy with lift bridge bump sound with traffic. I may go back for the outdoor atmosphere.
I gave it 2 stars because the staff was mostly friendly and seemed to be trying to do their jobs and the bourbon selection is awesome. Unfortunately things were running pretty poorly. We tried to go the night before and stood around for 15 minutes without even being acknowledged, the next night we tried again. We shouldnt have.It was sort of busy but with empty tables and the wait to be seated was an hour. Ok, short staffed, I get it. Then it was over 90 minutes to get served after we ordered. We didnt get what was ordered and what we got wasnt good. Really, who fills a veggie taco with bread crumbs and cole slaw? Another woman got tacos filled with french fries.Theres no excuse for that. I might go back for more bourbon but not for dinner.
The overall experience was good. Wait staff were good, the drink I had was well made, and the food I had was amazing! I had the Godfather... I was speechless. I mean, other than repeatedly telling everyone in my family omg, this is soooo good, seriously... over and over. One of the best sandwiches I have ever had, the roll was very fresh, and the ingredients (minus the 2 stems from tomatoes/peppers) were spot on and super fresh as well.
Cant say I enjoyed the place for a dinner on the Erie canal. Likely they are also affected by the staffing shortage of 2021, but it took over an hour to get a meal for three people. Food was fairly unremarkable with small portions to boot. Its likely this place is really just a college bar with food as an afterthought.
2nd time coming here. First time food was only ok (tacos and hamburgers) but took approximately 30 minutes to get food after orders were placed. It was a little busy so we decided to try again. Big mistake, place wasn’t busy, upstairs was completely empty and again after ordering took 30 minutes again. My meal (corned beef) was dry coleslaw was warm. People next to us left after about 15 minutes because nobody came back to take their order. Never again will I spend my hard earned money in this place.
Well seated my own self at my table and watch the bartender and the waitress chat for a good 5-10 minutes or so before anybody even approached me. Since it was Saturday afternoon at 4:00 and they only had four other customers you would have think they wanted to help me a little quicker. Food was okay but $14 for a burger and fries its a little expensive
Very disappointed in this restaurant. We had a party of four people. We sat at a inside table. We ordered two sodas and two ice water. We then ordered our meal which consisted of two burgers and two sandwiches. After a 45 minute wait, the waitress said that they were backed up, and it should not be much longer. The waitress offered the table next to us complementary drinks because there order was so long, they came in 10 minutes after we had sat down. After 1hour and ten minutes we decided to leave. I told the waitress , that I had had enough waiting. The reply I received was, sorry. I will never go back or ever recommend this place to anyone.
Credit card user beware. If you decide to use to your credit card to pay for your food here, you will receive a paper receipt that does *not* display a 3% credit card charge. My receipt said a different number than my capitol one statement did, so I called them up and asked. They were very nice about explaining that they charge 3% if you use a credit card, but seriously, that needs to be either verbally explained before usage, or on the receipt. I considered this fairly illegal because of how sneaky it was. Nice staff, nice place, food wasnt my favorite, not ok with hiding charges from me.
Rob F: Thanks for your review...you spared us from this place. We had a similar experience. When we arrived I asked the bartender if it was ok to grab a table outside. With much disinterest & a long pause she said someone would be with us in a bit. We waited at a table for 20 minutes, watched 2 waitresses come out to the patio a few times and never acknowledged us (there were only 5 tables). I tried pulling up the menu on my phone since they never brought us one, saw your review, and decided to leave. We went across the street to Barbers instead and had a great sandwich and cold beer. Thanks again.
I’m going to start by saying our waitress was amazing but the food and hospitality was terrible. There owner tried to bribe us with some free drink chips after we all lost our appetites from the horrible smell that was coming from the chicken tacos. The place was so understaffed that some guy that isn’t even an employee cleaned our table off and brought us drinks.
The service was completely unacceptable. The restaurant was not very busy, waited 35 minutes for the waitress to come to the table, had to ask for menus and silverware. 30 minutes after ordering food we were told they were out of a menu item we had ordered, we chose a replacement but then waited 35 more minutes till the food arrived (got food over 90 minutes after being seated). I understand they may have been short staffed (even with a half full restaurant), but not bothering to let us know of the delay is not acceptable. Food was mediocre.
Really like the atmosphere of this restaurant the servers and bartenders work their back sides off here there were only 2 with a packed house when we were here the food was great well worth the wait, duck wontons, California tacos yesssir. The owners of this place need to give their staff on a busy Saturday night something special because they rocked it for how limited the staff was we as consumers appreciate that type of hard work and dedication. Would deff return.
Cozy in size, but with a beautiful bar and additional seating upstairs and outside on the Erie Canal they can handle any size group. The food is really good from their menu and there are daily specials as well. Sounds like an ad but thats my description and whole hearted recommendation!
Came in for the Valentine’s Day special. Food was fantastic and the service was as well. The waitress was also bartending and doing a million things all at once. Very impressive. Wish i remembered her name to give her credit. she was great. Really enjoyed it. Thank you.
Went for the fish fry. Heard it was good. However, they were out of mash potatoes and the fries were extremly over cooked and hard. I had to send the fries back.2nd batch really wasnt any better. The fish was ok, good flavor but also over cooked the ends were so hard couldnt cut with a knife.
Honestly probably the worst restaurant in Brockport. You better block out 4 hours of your day. Be prepared to wait an hour to be asked what you want to drink, another hour to be asked what you want to eat, and another hour to get it. It is incredibly understaffed and you can tell the employees are trying their hardest. Unless you are cool with waiting for ever this is not the spot to be.
Have been here multiple times now. The waitresses weve had have been nice, and fun to talk with on one occasion where we were the only ones in the upstairs section. Recently had a $2 mimosa event going on, and even then, they didnt seem to skimp out on the quality of champagne (within reason anyway). Good selection of whisk(e)y and spirits. Cozy place with a great location and lovely outdoor seating.
My wife and I decided to have a fish fry. But by the time we buy it and get home it would be mushy. She said lets try the Custom House and order it to go. So we did. Ate in the truck on Main Street. We had a blast eating in the truck and the fish fries we excellant ! The service ( at six feet ) was great. We will be back. Next time she will drive so I can have the draft beers with the fish !
Went there two times for lunch. The first time was great. Service was fast and the food was delicious. The second time it took ~20 minutes to get our orders taken then from there over an hour to get our food. Thats just an unreasonable amount of time especially since the server didnt even offer an apology or explanation on why it took so long. Granted we were eight people vs. the four from my first visit, but almost a two hour lunch with not apology is crazy.
The food was delicious and plated beautifully. The only reason I am giving 4 stars rather than 5 is the temperature of the appetizers. We ordered 4 appetizers. The first 2 came out cold, sorta like they were waiting for the other 2 to be done. The next two came out warm. However, despite the food being cold, it still tasted amazing. If it were warm I am sure I would have been blown away. Whoever the chef is obviously knows how to cook and takes care in doing so. Maybe they were having a rough day or maybe they are still getting the hang of timing? At any rate, I will be going back and look forward to trying new things.
Staff was very friendly and had the customers best interest. The food is your typical bar and grill type of food. The fish is what we got and was fairly good but for some reason my wifes fish fry underneath was saturated in water making the bottom soggy. Hopefully this was just a one off thing because the top was nice and crispy. Cole slaw was served with my fish (broiled) and I dont like Cole slaw but the Custom House was different and I thought it was rather good. The appearance of the slaw caught my eye so I knew it was different from your typical Cole Slaw. They have an excellent selection of drinks weather you are a beer or wine drinker. I had a brown beer that Ive never had before and was very good. I was too full for desert but it was offered by our server. Bottom line if you are looking for quick service, bar food and a decent drink this is a good place to go.
Arrived Friday evening a little after 7pm after standing in the entrance for almost 10 minutes with several other groups and had not even been acknowledged by the hostess we left. They did seat 2small groups in the time and the hostess looked at us multiple times and walked by a couple times. but if you cant even acknowledge people waiting how good is the rest of the service
Super good tacos!! The Big Mac tacos are an occasional Tuesday special. I wish they were on the menu full time because they are the BEST.The drinks are decent, most food items are very good. Service is okay, my order has been messed up a few times but they fix the issues for the most part. They typically dont write down your order, which causes them to forget specific things you may have asked for.
Tried to come here with a friend. First floor was empty with no staff, went downstairs and found that it was busy with servers and customers filling every table. We waited patiently, no one acknowledged us or gave us any instructions. We went back upstairs to see if we missed something, like a sign, but no. So then went back downstairs to see if anyone would say anything to us, they didnt. We wanted to try this place after hearing great things, but left after feeling frustrated and un-welcome.
Not impressed at all. tried for the first and last time last night for dinner. not much of a dinner selection, especially if you dont like burgers. waitress was not at all friendly, seemed rather annoyed that we were there. she did come back once after serving our meals to check on us but never again. never offered to refill drinks, 4 out of 6 of us were empty. maybe that was because we had water and iced tea not alcohol. food was okay, nothing special. Ordered mozzarella sticks for appetizer, for $8 I kind of expected more that 3 small square mozzarella pieces. or maybe she could have let us know, that it clearly wasnt enough for our party of 5 (plus 1 baby) so we could have ordered another . I dont know, just wasnt impressed at all. will not be going back. Jimmy Zs up the street is 100x better!!!!!! despite crappy service my husband still left her a generous $25 tip. but that will be the last one from us.
Wouldve given more stars if it wasnt for the owner. Bar staff was excellent. The owner was here tonight drinking at the bar and totally belittled the female bartender. Have some humility and respect. He called her a retard behind her back to the woman he was hitting on. That lady later sneaked away Haha! The only reason youre successful is because of the people that work for you. I listened to him hitting on another women who was from the brockport chamber of commerce... it was embarrassing. Come on man!
Went here for lunch just me and my daughter. Food took almost 30 mins, they would not sub a chicken breast for a burger, had no healthy options for sides. My side choices were fries, fries or fries. My daughter ordered chicken tenders and they came out burnt and hard as a rock. Worse resturant in brockport. I enjoyed my chicken sandwhich and left my fries on the plate to throw out.

2022-06-21Cute little spot right next to the canal. Not a very extensive menu but what we did get was very good. Crab cakes were awesome! Bartender was super friendly. Our server was great as well. Will definitely be back.

2021-07-17I was really looking forward to trying their tacos because I read a good review about it . I tried it on tacos Tuesday, it was $3 per tacos I went all on abs got many true meat ones they have because I was excited. I took a bite of all four and I was far from impressed , the meats were tender but I couldn’t tell if it was well seasoned , it was like I was eat a well tendered meat but with no taste.

2021-06-16Nice location next to one of the drawbridges on the Erie Canal. Friendly staff. The meatloaf, salad and the peanut butter pie were really good. The mashed potatoes were average but the brussel sprouts were really uninspired. They showed to be slightly grilled but were mushy without much taste. Im kind of a B/S fanatic, however. I also wasnt thrilled with the waitress petting a guests dog in the course of her work.

2022-03-25We are typically very happy with our experience at Custom House. On March 25, 2022 around 5:00pm we arrived to order some drinks and food. We chose our table near the bar, but it was busy so we went to the bar to order drinks in order to keep the waiting staff from feeling rushed. The bartender was standing right near us talking to a couple and shut us down immediately and told us to get a table. Our waitress was very nice and helpful, but clearly busy. We later went to the bar to ask for a refill on our cocktails when we noticed the bartender was seemingly not doing anything, and she would not help us and called over the busy waitress to make the drink. She then went to the people next to us while we were still standing theres stating I dont help people who are at table and laughed. I found this incredibly rude that she not only went to another customer stating this, but also refusing to help someone who was trying to ease the burden of our waitress. On top of this, my burger was over cooked and we did not receive a side salad we ordered and was still charged for it. This made us reconsider our weekly outings to to Custom House.

2022-04-03Usually this place has a long wait which we typically handle well. It was over an hour until we got food, no problem. The problem was the medium well burger I ordered was extremely pink. I didnt ask for a new one since it took over an hr to get anything to begin with. My husband did not have the sautéed onions on his steak. The fries were seasoned well and we did get refunded for the burger. The server has to go up and down the stairs to get food and drinks for people seated upstairs. This sets up an environment where we didnt want to ask for drink refills which should have been done automatically anyhow. Anytime we have gone here the staff appears limited as we wait for seating, food, and general service. We can be understanding to short staff especially in these hard times I just would rather go somewhere with better food, service, and an environment where they are more attentive to customer needs (refill drinks, check in, etc).

2022-04-16Used to be my go-to bar, but things seem to be on the decline. They recently cut down the menu, cut portion sizes, added a service fee for card payments (so if you go, bring cash, I guess), and cut the cider provider I loved.Going to be on the lookout for a replacement bar.

2022-04-08I asked for a fork and I got one that was dirty.Service was good and the food was good.Obviously the review would be drastically higher if it werent for the fork.Being a coward, I just used the darn thing and then shattered about it for the next week.

2022-03-19Never again. Service is absolutely awful. Sat there for so long just two of us. Waiting for a server to come to us took Forever waiting for drinks took FOREVER ,Waiting for the meal took forever. Then waiting for the bill took beyond forever. Almost walked out. Couldnt even hear our server speak. Oh and cant forget the food was so awful. Just do not go here is my only suggestion.
