The Dakota in other cities:
Constructed between October 25, 1880, and October 27, 1884.Β Henry Janeway Hardenberghs architectural firm was commissioned to create the design forΒ Edward Cabot Clark, head of theΒ Singer Manufacturing Company. The building purportedly was named The Dakota because at the time of its construction, the area was sparsely inhabited and considered remote from the inhabited area of Manhattan, just as theΒ Dakota TerritoryΒ was considered remote.
Unassuming but historic building, The Dakota was very much the place for many celebrities to live during the 1970s and 1980s. Most famously, of course, was The Beatles John Lennon, who lived there from 1973 for or 7 years until his murder under the buildings archway in 1980. Across the road, in Central Park, the mosaic Strawberry Fields, just a short walk away lays in tribute to Lennon.
The Dakotaβ An up-scale apartment building in Upper West Side in NYC. One of the landmarks of the city. Designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh in 1880 and fully completed in 1884. It is located at Central Park West and 72nd Street.β Hardenbergh left a remarkable imprint on the face of the city. Most of his legacy has been demolished, however, he is mostly famous for block of flats and hotel buildings.β There are 65 flats in the Dakota. Each is unique. Inly residents are let in. The building is of German Renaissance Architectural style.β Among the Dakota dwellers were the famous Oko and John Lennon, and even Rudolf Nuriyev, a Russian ballet dancer.β *They say there is a ghost vagabonding about the apartments.
Not far from the John Lennon memorial and it still took me a minute to realize where it was. I look up to this place a lot as it is where John spent his last days. I would love to go inside, and maybe spend more time to admire these apartments but I was just excited to take a few pictures of this historic landmark. I recommend stopping by if you want a feeling of nostalgia.
Historically famous apartment building; think Roman Polanskis Rosemarys Baby and the last residence of John Lennon. Its very easy to find even if its the first time you visit as its listed as a must visit in most guides of NYC. Theres street parking and theres public transportation to this area. This is of course framed by the stunning Central Park. This place is like a pilgrimage site for fans and curious visitors. A landmark worth exploring.
The building where Roman Polanski shot the amazing movie Rosemarys Baby. One of the most iconic and best horror movies ever made. It is understandable why Roman Polanski chose this building for the satanic cult as it has a nice sinister vibe to it. The building is also famous as John Lennon used to live here before he got shot on the street outside.
Oldest apartment building in New York City with incredible views of Central Park. Home of many wonderful celebrities through the years. The entrance to Central Park across the street has a memorial for John Lennon who lived in The Dakota for many years and was tragically shot at the entrance in the 80s. Beautiful example of the architecture of a bygone era and a must-see when touring NYC.
I love it here. Mainly went because Im a huge Beatle buff, but it was absolutely beautiful. Across the street is Strawberry Fields in Central Park, a field with a shrine for John Lennon - also in the shape of a teardrop. Id love to go back! And the architecture of the Dakota is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous.
I was born in Liverpool and when I visited NYC one of the first things I wanted to visit was Central Park, Strawberry Fields and The Dakota.Loved the park but when I went to the Dakota Building it was entirely covered in scaffolding and netting!I could imagine John laughing at a fellow Merseysider who had come all this way to see his NYC home!

The Dakota Building is located at the corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West, in Manhattan, NYC, built between 1880 and 1884, has an Art Nouveau style, with niches, balustrades and balconies in French style, the Dakota works in a cooperative style and for a person to live in it, the name must be approved by most residents. In 1968, the building served as location for the film The Baby of Rosemary, directed by Roman Polanski and starring Mia Farrow. The building became known worldwide for being John Lennons residence and also for being the place where he was murdered in 1980, in 1972 the building was declared a building of the National Register of Historic Places and in 1976 as a National Historic Landmark.
December 8, 1980 The place where John Lennon fell to a bomb.Without it, many tourists would have been one of the luxury apartments built along Central Park without knowing the name of this building, βDakota Houseβ.I was watching from the Strawberry Fields side with a complicated feeling.
John Lennon, Roman Polanski ... A building full of history and stories. Architecturally interesting, look at the side black railings with their figures. And less than 200 meters in Central Park is Strawberry Fields, a place in honor of the murdered Beatle a short distance from there.
Building more or less beautiful, depends on the tastes, the visit serves only to remember John Lennon, what happened there and little else, unless someone tells you the story of other well-known artists and personalities who lived in the building, etc. There is no sign or sign indicating or mentioning the exact location where John Lennon was killed. Except for the murder of John Lennon, the building itself is not a building that stands out in the sense that it can be considered a must-see, in addition its porters / employees do not stand out for their kindness precisely.
It is totally crushing to think that John Lennon died there. There is a sign that warns that only hotel people can stand in front of that door ... potentially relevant place for the history of music. There is a special vibe throughout that area; right across is Strawberry Fields
Beautiful building, landscaped surroundings. We rented bikes for a ride through Central Park and on the way we also stopped here, at the house where J. Lennon lived and was shot. Dont miss the Imagine mosaic on the sidewalk in Central Park (not far from Dakota), where they enjoyed sitting with Y.O., who financed the construction of the mosaic.
It is a French-style building of the late nineteenth century of which you do not see much in the city. It occupies an entire apple, is bigger than one imagines before going. While you cant even access the hall, its a must-see for John Lennon fans. In addition, across the street you enter Central Park right to the Strawberry Fields Mosaic.
Another place only for Jon Lennon fans - the building where he lived and was shot. The building itself is currently distinguished by its architecture, however, there is no trace of the historical value of the place on the building itself. The building is in use, it is still an apartment building and it is closed to visitors, so only real cool people will find something for themselves.
(Summer vacation, lower grades of elementary school)Speaking of Dakota House, John Lennon! ! I think, but it doesnt matter for children. And it was about to end with βOh, thats rightβ for the parent generation of the Beatles. It comes out in movies and the old Manhattan atmosphere can be left on the street, but thats it. Those who are interested in art or architecture are good, but for those who are not interested in that, it ends with John Lennon was shot.I dont bother to go to see it, but I think it would be good if I thought βOh !!β when a bus or taxi passed by.I think that it is good to watch carefully because there is an atmosphere, but since it is an active building, there is something like a doorman, so how about watching too much Girojiro as a tourist?
The famous Dakota building in New York where British musician John Lennon lived and died with a shot at the door of the building. Since that day the building consortium does not let any celebrities live within it, only wealthy people and high-society New York can have the fortune to live in such a place.
This is the real apartment. The wall pressure is 15 inches, and the floor height is as high as the usual second floor. There is a tableware room in the apartment with 17 rooms. There is also a private butoh room on the upper floor. All rooms are sunny, thanks to the courtyard with its bronze fountain. At the time of construction in the 1890s, the name comes from the fact that the surrounding area was completely rural with fields and livestock, and it was said that it was like Dakota.
Knowing where John Lennon died was a dream for me to go to know that place and walk central park as he did the thousands of times it was a unique feeling because I felt his presence so spent many years ago highly recommended if you go to NY visit this building and central park

2021-10-11The Dakota was a beautiful buildingβ¦it was sad to know this was the last place that John Lennon was at and that he was assassinated. I went on his bday and people were singing his songs in Central Park so it was a beautiful moment. Happy I went.

2020-06-01The classy, timeless home of FBI Special Agent Aloysius Xingu Leng Pendergast. Iβve always wanted to visit here after being engrossed in Preston and Childβs thrilling, 20+ book series that follows the adventures of Special Agent Pendergast, Lt. Vincent DβAgosta, Constance Greene, & Proctor. I was glad to finally see this magnificent building in person and to have a friendly chat with the doorman. He encouraged a reading of Jack Finneyβs βTime and Againβ to get transported back in time and get a look at what itβs like inside The Dakota. Life goal: living here!

2019-06-21This is quite a building with lovely architecture. Iβve seen it many times in photos and documentaries on John Lennon. But it is really something to see it in real life and a lot larger than it looks on TV. It is very large and majestic, plus it is the place where John Lennon lived in the 1970s and place where he was unfortunately murdered in December 1980.Make sure to go into central park and see the Strawberry Fields forever monument to John Lennon. the entrance to this is across from the Dakota building and is very easy to find.

2019-03-03Amazing place, I am a huge fan of The Dakota for two reason Rosemarys Baby by Roman Polanski and John Lennon . The architecture of this building is beyond amazing and there are many details to the building itself. I would recommend taking a picture from across the street and in the middle. Also dont be afraid to ask for more information on regards to the building.

2022-06-15Apparently theyβll let you in if you wear a yellow vest and carry a ladder. I thought I was in the clear, until once I got inside, I needed a key to enter the floor.I hate 21st century securityβ¦
