The Dead Poet is an awesome place to grab a low key beer (probably make it a Guinness, keep reading) on the UWS. The walls are adorned with, well, dead poets and prose, but theres a poetry to the bar itself too. An entire wall is set up backward so that it looks forward through the massive mirror youll face when you sit at the bar. What can I say Im a fan of subtlety. Also, the more Guinness you drink the closer youll get to having your name on the wall. Some folks have had 500, 1000, even over 5000 Guinness pints here. I understand why.
Ive been to a good number of places in New York. Granted, a neighborhood bar is not the place where you would typically expect the most sophisticated form of hospitality. However, the service at this place is absolutely out of line. The server intentionally ignored to take our order. Even when he seemed to be bored while constantly looking at his phone, he never came to our table or made any gesture for over 15 minutes. We had no choice but just to leave. It’s okay when food is cold or music is lame or whatever. But this, is unacceptable.
I dont understand why every male bartender i interact with seem to be rude or standoffish at times, but that is not the case here. They have a small selection but the staff are happy to serve you each time, invite you to come again, work fast and evenly between each customer even on busy nights. Id recommend this bar to anyone for good vibes, nice atmosphere, and friendly bartenders. 10/10 becoming my go to bar.
Had a quick pint in there, spent around 20 min in the place, tops. Its nice neighborhood pub, charming and cozy, the opposite of the gaudy tourist trap ones that plague Manhattan. The staff was friendly, the Guinness was cold and served correctly, and the price was OK for a pub so close to the Central Park ($6 a pint).
Very nice bar! It’s got a kind of old school bar feel, like one I’d picture in an old movie scene with someone having a conversation with the bartender at a single old wooden bar.Lots of beer selections and a nice winter cocktail selection. I preferred the drink with the peppermint candy rim - I want to say it was called “Winter is coming” or something similar.Regardless, a nice spot to stop in for beer or a cocktail depending on your preference. Nice service while we were there as well and reasonably (typically) priced.#thedeadpoet #newyork #ny #bar #cocktails #nyc
It’s ok. Drinks are similar to every bar in the neighborhood. Prices also. 8.75$ for a glass of an IPA. I think you’re paying for the hole in the wall vibe. All of Amsterdam is grossly overpriced. Suggestion, drink at home , then when you’re buzzing , go to any of these bars and get a comfortable neighborhood feel.
I’d give this place 0 stars if that were an option. The co owner John who is 6’5 and 500 lbs has no problem manhandling women. He’s the most disgusting human on earth. Since John and KC bought the bar, it’s gone way downhill. There are way better and bigger bars in the neighborhood with much better staff. Please spend your money someplace else.
Not a big fan of themed anything but this place is totally worth it. Its small and cozy but not overcrowded. I love the quotes all over the bar and the themed drink menu. Went here with a few friends and we all sampled different drinks, each one was awesome. I ordered mozzarella sticks which were served fast and the overall service was great. Loved it and will be returning.
Fun space but so so expensive! They dont have happy hour and the crowd is pretty homogeneous (read: tech) but we were able to find a table. Orders are taken at the register and brought to the table. Cocktails were tasty though pricey and food was good but portions a bit small. Location is perfect but the cost makes it an occasional treat only.
Amazing place to be. The drinks are great and the food is fantastic! Had the Boneless Bourbon BBQ wings with a side of fries and those are the best wings Ive ever had in my entire life. Not only that but the portions are huge if its just for one person. I definitely recommend checking it out.
A cozy little Irish bar with good beer and excellent food. The staff are friendly and the prices are reasonable. Their creative, literary themed cocktails are delicious, and their daily drink specials are often a good deal. Also if you really like Guinness you can drink a lot of it and join their wall of fame.
I recently visited this place to try something new, and I loved it! I dont drink but the environment was really nice, the people who work there are really good at there job and making you feel comfortable. There was this one man who really stuck out to me, he was very sweet and was very thorough with his Job, I believe his name was Freddy, he was great to talk to. Overall this place was great. Definitely coming back !
Nice atmosphere attentive staff. the mix drinks are nothing to speak of, in fact the Moscow mule was horrible and the only mix drink liked was the gin and tonic. good for beer and long term chillen. their seats are uncomfortable at best. the bar has a overall hipster vibe in a bad way. go with good people and you wont have a bad time as long as you stick to beer.
I found this cute chic place on yelp and it was a great find. When you arrive the outside is not that appealing. You walk up a lot of stairs to reach a cute rooftop lounge/restaurant. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. They have self serve water on a table when you walk in. You can sit where you like and when your ready to order you walk up and order.
If you need a place to post up at the bar and have a good drink in a very casual atmosphere, The Dead Poet is hard to beat. Love going there and watching a game and chatting with the bartenders. Everyone is very friendly. The place is small and in very peak hours can get a little cramped, but it adds to the charm. One of our favorite places to get a drink and hang out.
Good neighborhood bar with a divey feel but super friendly bartenders and regulars. This is a Guinness bar but they have a few other beers on tap and also have a nice whiskey selection and a few potent cocktails. Only order the dead poet if you consider a long island ice tea to be light on alcohol. Drink enough Guinness and you can get your name on the wall. Free popcorn and decent bar food ordered from surrounding restaurants. Reasonable prices.
Get the introduction if your looking for a surprise (plus a sweet free glass)! Delightful, fruity, and all things juicy, this drink will wet your whistle when your not sure what your in the mood for. They also have many other drinks to choose from, far too many for my current travel budget to allow me to sample. Friendly and fun staff that wants you to enjoy yourself. Go ang get inspired.
A small, but great bar. Definitely a half-half locals and randos split. Look in, evaluate if its too crowded, and if its not, have a drink. If youre having a shot, buy the bartender one. You know how it works! Food here is good, but still bar fare, so set your expectations accordingly.
A really cool place to stop in for a quick bite or a drink. The only issue we had was with the strange juxtaposition of the library-esque decor combined with multiple flat screens playing sports combined with the food served in plastic red trays, which gave off very different vibes. Otherwise, a really cool and cozy place to stop.
This bar has cocktails based off authors and pieces of literature. All of them are delicious. They have free popcorn and delicious sweet potato tots. Overall bar food is above average, but not the reason to come here. The place itself is a little small, but to be expected of New York.
This is a very loud, very narrow bar and I came here for a friends birthday once. At night it gets really loud and crowded, but theres a jukebox and it can be lots of fun. Lots of really great comfort food and drinks. The service is great and theres a quick turn around. I would recommend it for small birthday gatherings.
Love the Dead Poet for casual gatherings with friends. Its not a huge space, but the drink specials are great and the food is pretty good too! I definitely recommend this place for Sunday football if you get there early enough to snag a seat at the bar -- or one of the tables in back to share with friends.
Readers digest: small, great beer selection, free popcorn, good cocktails.Picture yourself as a stereotypical writer. You drink, you brood, you drink some more. This place has a similar ambiance in that its dark, narrow, and almost a whole in the wall. Dont let that bring you down as you guzzle pints of Guinness and shovel in free popcorn. The atmosphere is more relaxed than surrounding bars and can be a great place to catch up with friends.
Had a very disappointing and racist experience at this establishment. A friend and I came for happy hour and food on a Monday evening. It was Memorial Day so the bar wasn’t too busy and we grabbed a table inside. However, the waitress refused to acknowledge my friend and I. She walked past us THREE times to help the table behind, and even when we tried to grab her attention she deliberately looked away. It doesn’t help that we were the only black women in the restaurant at that time. We ended up just leaving to go somewhere else. In the future I hope this restaurant will do better to ensure that employees acknowledge all customers and treat all customers respectfully.
Love the Poet. It gets pretty packed on the weekends or even during a game night, but it doesnt stop the bartender from being friendly and getting you a cold drink quickly. No judgments for poor decision shots, either, which is also good. The bathrooms are tiny and at the way back, so be ready to elbow your way through, though the crowd is very nice.
Trendy-ish but eclectic college bar where all the drinks are named after ... you guessed it. Dead poets. That aside, they do have a good variety of interesting and tasty drinks. The food is typical for a bar and good to soak up the alcohol.Table service is mixed, it’s usually easier to just order at the bar and take it to your table.Just wait till people are drunk and start loudly (and badly) quoting poetry. Oh the drunken nights...! I’ll decline to post the video out of respect for those who were celebrating their 21st bday. Hahaha! If you found this review helpful, please give a thumbs-up :)
This bar was so cool ! our friends were at the beacon for a show, and we didnt have tickets so we went to a few bars. this place is tiny and it was packed with people. the drinks are all poet themed which was fun, and they were very well done too. next time i go to the beacon i want to go here again !
Absolutely love this place for drinks and bites! The place is kinda small, but if you can get a seat and time to really enjoy the ambience youre in for a good time! All the drinks are delicious and the fact that they have drinks named after dead poets is Soo cool! Check this place out if youre in the upper west side area because you wouldnt wanna miss this. Also ask for The Dead Poet, you can keep the Mason Jar afterwards!!!
Best bar on the Upper West Side. Stands out starkly from all the other bars along blackout alley as less of a frat house and more of a neighborhood spot. Think less Jager and more Guinness, fewer popped collars and more regulars. The signature cocktails are fantastic, especially the Dead Poet cocktail. The burgers are delicious but the bacon cheeseburger and the Frikadelle burger both top the list. Oh, and the bartenders are the coolest of the cool. No better place to grab a drink in the 10024.
We went here because google said they were open until 4am and that they served food until late. Unfortunately the two people working behind the bar ignored us for 15 min after we sat down. When we tried to go to the bar to ask about ordering food, the young woman said she would be right over after she finished making the cocktails she was working on. When she came to the back where we were, she walked past our table to the juke box and started picking music to play. The young man who was there working also passed us twice without asking if we had ordered or how he could help. Finally he came back over and He sat down at the table with us and then asked what we wanted to order. When we said what we wanted to order from the kitchen he shared “that we have bad luck, the kitchen just closed.” It was 12:06 am. This was after the young woman had already said she would be over to take our order. When we arrived it was 11:40pm. Would have loved to try this place but never will now.
I heart the Poet. Friendly bartenders, very reasonably priced, the crowd is fantastic and the food isnt bad either. Order their signature Dead Poet drink and take the mason jar home with you! If your cell phone is dying and you think you have to leave, fear not! Ask nicely and theyll charge it for you behind the bar. Oh, and dont forget to have some of their free, freshly-popped popcorn.
Dead Poets is where you go when you dont want to think where you want to go, when you simply want to sit among other people and chill and drink your beer and not bother the world, neither be bothered by it. A bibliophile would love their punny menu of drinks. Food is generally ok and yet irresistible after all that liquor, so.
Limited amount of menus available, because they come inside vintage book covers. This doubles the time it takes to place an order. Chose a gin & tonic, 9/10ths of the glass was ice chips. For a 2nd round, asked for it to be easy on the ice, it came with 1/4 ice, which is a little more like it. Had a bite of my friends burger: overcooked. Fries were soggy. Both suggest food is frozen, which isnt unheard of at a bar, but some out there do it fresh
Gotta love a theme bar where the name is more than a gimmick. The Dead Poet serves up some mean cocktails, and the namesake drink is one to remember. The well-protected recipe manages to taste uncannily like a good grape juice and hits you like a Mack truck when you stop looking. Evenings are a great time to catch undergraduates attempt the foolhardy on Amsterdam Ave., adding to the whole atmosphere.
Horrendous! Shame to the name of Irish bar... our food arrived to the bar wrapped in tin foil which they didnt even try to hide from us.. they served me reheated chicken which wasnt reheated to the correct temperature .. sure who doesnt want food poisoning on their holidays...!? Chicken was just rubber and uneatable.. I asked the server flat out was this chicken reheated? The answer I got was... oh the foods from our sister bar... he knew rightly and couldnt give me a straight answer just passing blame! Massive let down!!
Its a bold claim, but the Dead Poet is my absolute favorite bar in Manhattan. Something about the combination of cozy space, friendly bar staff, innovative theme (deceased poets!), and creative cocktails is unbeatable. Try the Dead Poet - dangerously delicious, but you get to keep the glass.

2022-04-10Great Irish pub! Super cozy, great atmosphere, many TVs if you’re looking for a place to watch sports and great beer selection! If you get hungry, they have popcorns or hot dogs for $2! Definitely coming back.

2022-04-07Second time visiting, this time we came a little earlier because we were in the area and loved it so much our first visit. The drinks are really creative and everyone on the staff is always friendly, later visits are perfect for a bar night, however maybe because of the time we were visiting this occasion the food selection wasnt much.

2021-07-15Favorite bar in NYC. While it’s definitely small, all the staff have huge personalities and are always happy to talk. Great cocktail menu, but even better house beer. Hard to find a seat, which is a good thing as it’s always crowded in here. They even have some small bites to help keep you going.

2022-02-04Have always enjoyed visiting The Dead Poet. There is always a good collection of beers (bottle and on tap) and a very nice vibe. Last time I tried putting songs on the jukebox with the app. It was fun. One recommendation: just make couple of pop corns every now and then even if no one has ordered. When we were there someone ordered and the smell was so tempting that many followed up. Im sure your sales will go up, that smell was irresistible.

2022-03-17The name of the bar along with the cocktail names are so creative! The drinks are delicious, they have like a juke box app you can use to choose your own music— the staff loved everything we choose! Everyone was so laid back and very open minded. Such a cool bar

2022-07-04Liked this place a lot but the service can be awful. Went with friends the other day and they gave me a beer in a glass which had a horrible smell. Moreover, the beer tasted awfully. We respectfully told the waiter if he could change it for another one and for the check. He got agitated and started saying the glass was fine and he did not believed us (many in my group tried it). He immediately brought a new one and the check, which, weirdly, was charging us for both beers. We asked him why this was happening and he said that the glass was clean and it was our imagination that it was not, and that he was going to charge us for both. We asked him for the manager and he arrogantly said he was (which we did not believe). We were asking for the check since more people was coming and we wanted to start a new check. After that, we obviously left.

2021-06-20Really cool cocktail bar, love the decor and name of the drinks. We always wanted to come here but it would always be packed. The place is small inside as well l, but definitely worth coming here.
