The Door in other cities:
I understand that they do a lot of good for the community -- but they could hire more intelligent staff. It says serving ages 16-24 very clearly on their website. When I came, after hour of commute as a 24 year old, they refused my service.I had to argue with their, presumably educated staff, the literal definition of 16-24. My goodness, they still didnt understand.
When I was 17 this program helped me so much! I learned a great skill that turned into a career, gave me free medical care, great food, and also valuable free legal guidance. I dont know what I would have done without this program living on my own at such a young age. I wish every city had something this amazing! This place and all the contributors / have a very special place in my heart. I went from feeling all alone and hopeless to motivated and cared about. Love you guys, please dont ever stop this program :-)
Sadly, if you go here to try and get your GED.. Dont ! I was a student here just trying to better myself and further my education, but yet was punished for it. I passed all my classes came in did what I had to do and leave. While I was there I was mocked by the supervisor she was disrespectful and gave me a hard time when I needed help and at times it was like I was not even allowed to have a bad day or I was threatened to be kicked out of the program. I got along well with my teacher the students and a counselor who wasnt even mine cause the counselor I had was rude as hell anyways it was a horrible experience but I stuck through it. I had to leave because I moved and found out I was pregnant. When I tried to reach out a few months later I didnt get so much as a text back from the supervisor she didnt acknowledge my effort to try and do the right things only when I did something she did not like. This place is supposed to have people who want to help not turn their backs when you need help but its okay Im enrolled now into a ged class and almost ready to take my test . I will never come here for anything ever again
In my personal experience, and with information provided by those close to me, they do not have staff entirely equipped to handle LGBT issues, sexual harassment, stalking, and especially if the predator is a minor and the victim is an adult. They do not notify transgender people that there is a transgender bathroom. They are not size friendly with their clothing closet and do not have anything actually concrete to help homeless individuals.
I worked at The Door for a few weeks before I decided to place my 2 weeks notice I refuse to be under the leadership of a CEO that does not truly care about the mission of this organization. The employees are not happy. The CEO walks around calling employees kid instead of addressing them by their name. How could we care about the children of tomorrow when you do not even engage with them. His main focus has been to collect donations.Truly saddens me.
I use to go to The Door when I was 12 years old and older with my brother and our friends. When I was their I always had a blast of a time. The counselors at that time were excellent. They really cared about people. The Door had great activities like pottery & art shows medical and programs like manpower and other programs for women too. When I was Their I became the store girl I sold snacks on the main level.I enjoyed playing basketball their on basement level, medical was excellent and private loved it!And mind you this was in the early 90s! Lol,smh the good ol days!At that time they also help people get there G.E.D diploma but......I have my High school diploma. Im just grateful to have experienced the door in my life and wouldnt mind my children going in the near future God bless all!
They need to have CLEAN BATHROOMS FOR ALL THOSE YOUTH THAT COME THEIR IS BASICALLY ONE BATHROOM ON THE FIRST FLOOR IS HIDIUS AND DISGUSTING THEY NEED TO FIRE MAINTENCE GUY THY NEED TO RENOVATE this place the place needs to be renovated with bathrooms they lunch people are cheap they dont even offer juices at lunch they should have ice machines and various snacks and drinks they need to look into who is budgeting the money

2022-05-11I went to The Door from 16-18 years old, and they helped me with every aspect of my life. I could get a fresh meal, counseling, free medical care (Melvin was my doctor for years) and housing assistance. I recommend them highly.

2022-04-18From what I noticed about this company is that most of the higher ups are white racist who only want to hire white individuals for the high paying jobs and give the minorities the less paying jobs with no chance of ever moving up in the company. They rather give positions to unequipped ppl outside of the company than give the position to minorities that are able to inside the company. Ive applied more than a handful of times only to be told they hired a white person instead.

2022-01-28Its a great organization that gives you the help you need, they have friendly staff who put in every effort to help you reach your goals. I personally received help with college counseling and everybody I met in that department have been wonderful and very helpful, shout out to Miss Anjie, although she no longer works there, she was an amazing counselor to me and I enjoyed my time working with her.

2022-04-09The door helped me a lot. At the time I was a wild 21 year old in the process of trying to get my life together with the need of knowledge and guidance. I went to the Ged program eager to get my ged and the teachers went above and beyond. They taught real facts and were so real , unlike a lot of teachers of today. They also answered questions and were so patient. I went to school right before summer break and the teacher allowed me and whoever to learn during the summer break. I was the only one thst really showed up and she was so cool and printed me worksheets and worked with me one on one. I was without a home and always hungry and they served actually nutritious and good food that was cooked so good for breakfast , lunch , and dinner. Alot of drop in centers dont have good food. There was even a homeless drop in center open everyday to shower , nap only for 2 hours on chairs but it was something , do laundry , a case worker , and you could have access to a small locker for belongings. On Saturdays they were open and had amazing like Cafe upper class food so good. During the day staff would make cookies too sometimes. There was open space for games such as air hockey and ping pong. So cool. They even had little art classes , dance classes, music class ,and so much more to entertain and the opportunity to make new friends. Its really an outlet to get ones needs met , get them to work on their goals , and to entertain away from lifes problems. They even had a gynecologist on the site and free glasses. Even if no insurance they helped. They gave free condoms and stuff and that helped me a lot because I was during tricks at the time and Noone judged me but helped me have peace of mind by keeping me safe and testing me for hiv and other diseases so i knew I was safe. The staff always was there to talk and listen and make me feel connected to someone that cared at a time where I lost with who I was and what humanity was. It was all love. Now I am 25 years old and if I was of age I would Def wanna go to a program like that again. The peers were very nice and non-judgmental too. It was all love honestly and so amazing. At the time I was shy so engaged a little. But I still loved it. Im now in my hometown reading pa and my dream is to make a place like the door out where Im at to help people the way the door helped me

2021-09-09A very poor choice of a foundation to start off from... the honest truth is this organization is a great place to come visit or see a friend but its very under-maintenance is the support prospectivehow can your support be so effective if you consistently change up the staffing for the ones who genuinely came to work.its frustrating seeing the diminishing program go down the toiletbut the issues just dont stop there but youd have see it too believe itYou be the judge... this establishment is to support disconnected youthfor them to have created a better and brighter path to successbut I truly find it almost insulting to i, myselfto compile myself to come out of my shell because I am a introvertand share personal information about myself and my family and or friends to a complete stranger who is certified by law to handle my s.s.i #and Identity card if the person who originally sat down with me and told me I can trust them, now disappears and now Im stuck re-informing another stranger the same informationits tricky, its a bit scary.but than again this is from my P.O.V

2022-02-08Nobody in the Bronx Youth center department wants to answer their emails. They’re good to post on Instagram but not to emails.

2019-01-27The door is a decent place and it all depends on which staff member you work with. I had a horrible experience with one of the receptionist, she would be very rude towards me. The dentist straight up lied to me about not having any cavities. However, my primary doctor here is great at what she does. The therapist wasn’t too bad either.

2018-12-10If I could give a lower review, I would. This place is only good for the money they throw for their Christmas party. Theyre not organized, knowledgeable, or courteous. Do not go here if you value your time, because they do not provide the actual services they state. The staff are not educated on the matters of the homeless and lgbtq communities, and furthermore, you are constantly monitored in the facility.
