The Duplex in other cities:
Omg I sang a song. A love story and I was only half bad lol.I was literally shy the 1st time I went and the second time I tried it. So fun.Check.it out. The village spot light on the back room of the second floor felt so underground and cool just getting to it and then is a piano genius named Darius playing almost any song u wanna sing on stage.Light camera action 🎬When it start you are nothing a star in the constellation. Shine baby shine!
Worst bartender experience ever. The bar was not even packed Sunday night for pride and I waited over 15 minutes for a frumpy looking white girl to serve me who didn’t even serve my drink at all. Stop inviting people behind the bar and pay attention to your customers. Do your job!
Sing along upstairs and downstairs on open Mike. If you are an artist who want 2b close to broadeay go enjoy a night on stage during open mic. I went yesterday. A thursday night and really was impressed by some really good singers. So much I was shy to perform my song I composed and created when I was 7. Lol . I thought it was the day to come sing and pretend but God damn. All that talent. Its like a musical that wasnt released yet produced by @thevillagespot. One made me think of Aguilera/Grande. Not so much in style but for having a voice that s of a big woman but are tiny cute Lil dolls :)...Cant wait to sing my song there soon.3 bars in one place. 2 stages top and bottom with a middle bar lounge on the second floor. Its a village town house 🏠.
A classic venue in New York for musical and comical Cabaret. Venue upstairs seats 72 and events and performances are ever-changing and incredibly unique one-of-a-kind consider yourself very lucky to go in and see any kind of show that’s been on here they’re all innovative all authentic and all for the love of art. Don’t be surprised if you see a famous Fais are stil don’t be surprised if you see a famous face or two. ;)
What a fun place! Paddy is such a TALENT on the piano and singing...kept the place going, with the best smile, all night! And the singing bartenders! Wow!!! Joseph, Ryan, and Abby are all POWERFUL performers!! They were so much fun! And the customers were encouraged to sing, too! I didnt want to leave!
After dinner friends took us to this place for a few beers. After the outside space closed we went inside for the piano night. Apparently they do this almost every night and the bartenders are the ones singing to the piano. And let me tell you, these guys were seriously talented! We had a massive blast. Would recommend any day.
Wish I could give this place 10 stars. Randomly walked by quite late on a Wednesday night and heard delightful cabaret/theatre style music played on a piano so I had to stop by. Entertainer did a lovely job of singing, playing piano and welcoming everyone in at once. So talented. They even let several customers get up and sing songs! Bartender Maria was incredible. She took care of multiple guests yet made everyone feel like the most special person in the room. On a personal note: I was having a rough day after traveling back home for a brief visit to NYC. She somehow made time to ask questions and make me feel better while running around and doing the same for other customers. If I still lived in the city I would be there every Wednesday.
Definitely a good time! Its is one of the oldest LGBT lounges and Sheridan square. Downstairs is the piano lounge a lot of Broadway and show tunes are some air. Upstairs usually there is weekly drag shows Tuesday night you can catch Miss Sherry pie turning it out of stairs. Drinks are a little pricey but theyre strong and the bartenders are very cute and very nice. Friendly atmosphere but also lots of tourists. Iive in this area so to me stopping there Im supporting local queens performing or Something like that. But if you are a tourist stopping in NYC check out this place!
Music and drinks were good, and the service was quick. I saw on the menu that gratuity of 20% was included in the tab on parties of all sizes. When I closed out, the price seemed a little high, but I went along with it. I didnt know the price of one of the drinks ordered, so I just shrugged it off and paid. The server handed me the payment device, and I noticed that on the tip section, 20% was pre-highlighted, as if that was the lowest option I had. However, I found out after I received the receipt that the original higher price was already including the tip, and I had double tipped 20%. It wasnt a huge deal since the server was nice, but make sure you review the tab closely before adding additional tip if you want.
Definitely a must if youre in town. Located in the heart of West Greenwich Village, The Duplex is not a just bar but a heavenly atmosphere. The whole staff is quite nice and friendly and you can always make your way downstairs to the piano bar if you feel like singing your heart out. Its true that prices go a bit higher than in other places in the area but hey, worth it.
Was actually a great evening until the end. Decent service and great music. But then abruptly our patio table was deemed closed with absolutely no warning whatsoever. We were forced to pay our tab out and not allowed inside the bar even though it was still open for business. We were told “that’s how we do things here”. Quote intended. If you can’t have a patio table after a certain time, then give a heads up instead of just shutting it down without notice. Horrible way to end the visit.
Well theyve done as well as can be expected through the pandemic, but automatically adding a 20% gratuity without informing the patron is bad for business and worse for the server. As someone who spent many years behind the bar making drinks and serving food, I wouldve tipped more. But this hubris guarantees I wont be back, pandemic or not.
This had been our watering hole for years over two decades. It’s our Friday sanctuary. It’s where we’ve met out most dearest of friends. It’s a safe place full of love and tons laughter. The one team there is family, and so worth the trip. These times are absolutely challenging but you won’t be disappointed if ya swing by with the accommodations made to keep everyone safe. So pop in and tell ‘em Lanie sent ya!
Had an absolutely fabulous time here. They host excellent cabaret performances. Be prepared to pay for drinks (which are a little hit or miss) and 25% gratuity during performances, potentially. Otherwise, really great atmosphere for all the frollicking, flamboyant men out there. Id see a show there again.
I did the stand up open mic here and it was great. The host and crowd were all very friendly and supportive. The audience itself was a mix of other performers and people there to watch, so it was a good mix. The beer was good too, I got a nice stout on tap.The only downside is that there isnt a stage and the comics had to do their routine in the front of the bar, so not every seat was a good seat to see the comics in. But not a huge deal.
Saw a friend, Chrissy Albanese, do a cabaret show tunes kind of performance. There was a two drink minimum, I stuck to the cocktails, some were certainly better then others, but you can always stick to simpler drink options and not need to worry about that. At the end, I think the best drink I tried was probably the Stormy (if I remember that correctly) off the specialty cocktail list. The show was in a smaller, more intimate space upstairs and in the back, which really lent to the vibes of the show, we were all very engaged and it was a wonderful show. Had a good time here.
My daughter, who lives in the area, suggested Duplex when I visited from Portland, Oregon last week. We were downstairs in the piano bar, where the music was awesome and the crowd was singing along and having a great time. The night we went the pianist was Will; hes SO good: he played and sang an astonishing variety of pieces, took requests, and accompanied some amazingly talented vocalists including the bartender, the waiter, the general manager, and several guests. I would have gladly stayed until closing, but had an early flight home the next morning; made it until nearly 2am then had to call it a night. Definitely hope to go back on my next visit -- Duplex was one of the highlights of the trip. Highly recommend!!
Amazing piano bar with great songs any night. I especially love Friday and Saturday nights though. Bartenders are amazing and join in the singing. Really great place. It gets packed so if you want to get in try to show up early on a Friday or Saturday around 10 or else you might not be able to really get in.
Love this place! The music is great, the bartenders are super friendly. This is my go to place when I want to have a good laugh. However, I feel like the price might have gone up a little or our server overcharged me and my friend. I had 4 Coronas and 2 shots of lemon drop... The bill was $71 + Tip... you be the judge. Maybe pre-game beforehand. But if you don’t mind spending money, you’ll enjoy the experience. :)
We had a great time celebrate rating my brother in laws birthday. The music upstairs is really good. but their drinks were not so great. I had 2 cosmos and they tasted like they were made with a mix. Very powdery and almost metallic tasting. I wouldnt order them there again.
This place was incredible! If I could give it 10 stars I would! The pianist that night was Brian I believe. He was so incredibly hilarious as well as mind-blowingly good with the piano. His people skills were great and I laughed the entire time I was there with just enough time in between jokes and songs to catch my breath and take a sip of my drink.
Great cabaret venue, I went on both an open mic night and a night with a singing pianist - personally I preferred the open mic night, had more of a fun vibe that included the audience more. The venue is a little small and the drinks werent the cheapest, but it was great fun.
Really sweet bar with great people running it! Nice vibe too. I usually come to the stand up shows that take place upstairs and around. You need to purchase two drinks. Always makes me feel uncomfortable but what are you going to do.Ground level is the piano bar and Ive never participated yet but its definitely on my to do list.
Visited this establishment last night with friends for the first time. I was taking a friend from out of town to some gay bars in Manhattan. The bouncer was surprisingly friendly. We went upstairs to get drinks and the bartender blatantly ignored my friends and me when we wanted to order drinks. He acted like he didnt see us...I dont know if it was because we were queer women, but I was very turned off by that. The music and the atmosphere was definitely nothing to write home about. The crowd was pretty boring as well. I gave this place two stars because it has potential with its set up, but they certainly need to invest in improving the atmosphere and professionalism among staff.
Whenever Brent is playing downstairs in the Piano bar on a Tuesday, you have to GO! Hes amazing! Hilarious sense of humor and the bar staff are incredible singers. Different piano players on different nights, Will is an absolute babe on a Wednesday and Darius on a Thursday for singer spotlight is fantastic. All of my best nights living in NYC have been spent here! Staff are super friendly and great fun. Drag shows upstairs get pretty packed out too!
I visited The Duplex for a friends birthday, with a group of about 10 people and we had the best time.We got there early and sat in the front near the piano, which was great, we got to interact a lot during the performances.Every member of the staff that I encountered was kind, funny and great at their job. I have been raving about this place since I left and I will continue to do so.I cannot wait to go back to see an awesome show full of extremely talented and wonderful people.Special thanks to Adam (MAC award winner!!), for being so good to us!
Best piano bar in the city and old school gay bar. So much fun and awesome staff. Ive had so many great experiences there over the years and have met friends Ive had for years. I used to know all the staff but I dont go out aa much any more. But when I go its always a good time and the upstairs bar in a nice hangout.
The food is ok but there are some hit dishes, like the Catalan toast and humus. But you come for the atmosphere and the wine. Its a fun place, loud at times, but feels like a community spot with basic eats. They also have gluten free pizza which is a plus. We went for a friends performance and it was packed!
A friend performed here for her birthday upstairs and it was lovely (note it required a two drink minimum). I cannot say much about the downstairs portion since we were not there, but overall I had a good time. Im not sure how difficult it is to acquire the space here to perform, but it seemed that all the guests had a great time.
Ive been upstairs several times and enjoyed each visit. The drinks are always strong and reasonably priced for this part of Manhattan. The staff if friendly. As a very short person I dont like the fact that there is no foot rest at the bar. Not only does it make it hard to sit in the seats for an extended period of time, but it also makes it difficult to climb up onto the stools.
I have never been to a place that is as understaffed as they were last night. I am posting on here because they are not comparable to other bars in the city for prices or they don’t know what price they are charging. Down stairs bar $23 for a drink up stairs $9 so how are they comparable when it’s the same bar? I went to 3 other bars and all cheaper then this one. Save your time and your money go somewhere where they won’t try to price inflate you.
I love love love this place. An intimate dive piano bar gem with an incredibly talented staff. They also invite audience members to sing with the piano player, but you better have the pipes to back up your request, this isnt your local karaoke bar. They do encourage audience sing-alongs.
Absolute favorite home style bar. Reminds me of our bars in England. The staff rarely change up which gives a lot of familiarity. You end up knowing everyones name by the time you leave and end up singing along with every song which are always performed by absolutely AMAZING singers.Must go if you like down to earth places with real down to earth people.
I had a terrible experience here with some friends. The live music was disappointing to say the least. We were hoping for fun upbeat music, but were instead subjected to depressing dirges that really killed the mood. In addition, the bartender tried to pressure me and another friend to have drinks. He wouldn’t relent and I ultimately felt incredibly uncomfortable and unsafe in this environment. Avoid Duplex at all costs.
This place is a party!Singing, dancing, the piano never stops and neither does the fun.On regular nights, you can feel free to ask the person on the piano for a request - or sing something yourself, they dont mind if you arent very good.Singer Spotlight nights, they carefully curate a playlist of pop songs and show tunes for local artists to perform. In between, they have events, shows, drag performances...This place has it all!Cocktails were a bit expensive, though
Since 2007, I have visited this place maybe 50 times. I always make a beeline for it any time Im in Manhattan and I love the area in general. I met many nice people here including Kate, Poppy, Brian and several others who worked in the bar and I always have a great night out in the area in and around Christopher Street. Monster club is good, but Duplex is where its at!
Cool shows. Happy hour doesnt exist in the showroom and drinks in the showroom are meh and overpriced, but thats to be expected. Saw a variety show that was quite good with a mix of comedy, mimes and interpretive dance but was supposed to include burlesque, which it did not. Enjoyed my time there overall though
Meh! Very crowded always, good if you want a very lowkey night with karaoke and piano playing. Its a gay bar but its mostly older gay men and straight women screaming and singing. Nothing wrong with that but not for younger crowds. They also ask for money for the piano player and kind of criticize you if you give $5, humilliate you if you give $1 and if you give $10 you get 3 sec of acknowledgement.
Very fun piano bar with a different show every night. Come for a fun time singing showtunes with a live piano player and occasional talented singer. Upstairs is more of a normal bar with a fun trivia game. Good mix of gay and straight clientele but it classifies itself as a gay bar.
The first floor had live music but gets really packed. Performance started at 9pm on a Friday I went. You have to get there at least before 10pm. If youre too late and cant get into the first floor, theres a DJ with a standard bar on the second floor. But the vibe between the two are totally different.
Not interesting enough to actually be bad. We came here on an all-piano-bar crawl one night, and it was one of the lowlights of the evening. Pretty average all around-- feels like the crowd is mainly tourists. Service leaves something to be desired, entertainers are competent, but I wasnt very interested in what they were doing. Overall, this place lacks much in the way of uniqueness or sophistication.
Some of the things I heard when I went to the piano bar for happy hour: Watch out people, the floor is drunk!, and Heres to single living, double seeing and triple sleeping!I had a couple of drinks and some good laughs to the beats of pop and Broadway songs. Very popular with the LGBT crowd.
I used to love this place, but last week I’ve been truly disappointed, there was a waitress that I didn’t saw before, we were taking drinks at a table outside and we changed the table to her zone next to the piano, we had 6 cocktails each of us before changing the table, but we took another one next to the piano. Then we wanted to leave but this waitress said that the minimum was 2 drinks, I said that we took 6 drinks before each of us at the other table outside, I had the receipt. She gave me attitude, I tolk with the doorman, but he didn’t solve anything, the waitress was rude with me screaming and doing that thing with the hand next to my face. Disgusting.I payed for that last drink and they force me to give a tip. I was scared and I payed.I’m a singer, I have an upcoming show performing there and I’m not doing it because of that.Very disappointed.
This is one of my favorite places in the city and cant recommend it highly enough for atmosphere (though dont want to let everyone in on it so maybe Im shooting myself in the foot for writing this review).I do feel the need, however, to warn people that when it is busy here, the table service tabs can get completely confused. Many times other peoples drinks end up on one tab, and none on another and then the staff can get quite annoyed at the confusion at the end of the night (which, lets face it, is through no fault of the - now pretty drunk - guest).Just something to take into consideration for both the staff and patrons. It really is the only way I can fault this great place, but it is definitely something that needs to be addressed.
I went here this past week for a friends cabaret in the theater upstairs. Its a great little theater with little tables and such. Theres a two drink min. which is per usual at this type of place. I am not sure how you could get a performance there but if a friend of yours is performing, go! It will be an intimate affair!
This is my favorite bar on the PLANET! Everyone could sing so well. Showtunes were playing all night. In this small room full of men singing their hearts out to Les Miserables, I definitely cried. I’m pretty sure I cried to a Rent song too. I would return to NYC just to go to this bar!
Incredibly rude staff. There is also a ridiculous rule that you need to have purchased two drinks to sit at a table. This is not advertised anywhere within the bar. Even after purchasing my second drink, I sat at a table and was asked to vacate it despite the second drink. I was also told by the bar tender that I didnt tip enough. I have never been so belittled in a bar. And for a venue in such an accepting neighbourhood, I am appalled.
This was one of the first places I went to when landing in NYC in 2011. I love the Duplex for the clientele and the fact that it is a piano bar. Certain nights, upstairs, they are having cabaret shows with a two drink minimum as the price of admission. Very great place to be. Check it out.-blasianFMA
Great two-level space with (seasonal) outdoor seating right off the Christopher Street subway station. I mostly go for open mics with live piano accompaniment either downstairs with their baby grand or in their little cabaret theatre upstairs. The crowd is very diverse--gay, straight, asexual, confused, tourists, locals, etc. The drinks are good and reasonably priced, and the bar staff is excellent and they sing, too.
Last night I was at the Duplex with a friend honoring the 1st year passing of a good friend, who often frequented your establishment. I purchased one drink and a bottle of water upstairs and then moved downstairs. When I walked into the downstairs area, I smiled at the short blonde female server and sat down. Once I sat down, that same female server then rudely expressed to my friend that she would not serve me because I seemed drunk. I overheard what the server, confronted her and explained that I was not “drunk and found it incredibly presumptions for her to treat me that way. I put my newly purchased drink down in front of her and left. Honestly, it’s 12 hours later and I am still upset about the way I was treated. Never in my life has anyone refused to let me sit at a table or serve me a drink. I’m a professional with a child and was in NYC for a sad reason. I won’t be back and will never forget this experience.
Sat in the lower level -- microphone for singers was way too loud. Really difficult to talk with and hear someone youre sitting with -- not a good place for conversation (at least the evening I was there?). The tables are so small and rickety that the first bar table my friends and I were at sent our drinks flying with a light sober bump.
Stopped in for literally two drinks, one for my partner and one for myself. After one drink each we decided to leave(not only the server did not offer water or menus he did not even ask us how we were) when we received the bill they charge tip. I have never heard of this and will never return to this place. Sorry for the bad review but you guys deserve this maybe have more friendly staff and not just charge a tip for guest that are only having TWO drinks.
Go for whatever show you want to see. then its worth it. this place hasnt spent a penny in over a decade cleaning it up, renovating, fixing things and it looks it. wear and tear you see everywhere. that too me is a turn off, but they have some interesting cabaret acts and its worth going for if you want to see someone in an intimate setting.
This was my 2nd time going to this bar and I absolutely loved it both times.i love the atmosphere!the pianist and workers(who all can sing really well) .if you get tired of the downstairs vibe or dont care for the song they are singing you can head upstairs to the gay bar for a clubby dance vibe.
Bartender made the assumption I was underage without checking my ID (I’m well above the drinking age) and refused to serve me. He also charged ALL of my friends’ drinks to my credit card in order to retaliate against me for calling him out on his discriminatory attitude. To top this off, the stand-up comedian was terrible, and that is the biggest understatement of this new decade.
Great piano player but the bartenders were completely intoxicated the whole time we were there and the male bartender upstairs was extremely rude. I see Im not the first person who says the bartender upstairs was extremely rude. Rude, and very unprofessional bartender.
Was kicked out with my friend because we didnt buy a drink despite the bartender confirming that we bought two drinks and would gladly buy more! The woman who was apparently the manager was very rude with the whole process even when I was speaking cordially to her. Its unfortunate that this happened because I really liked the place.
One of the things I love about NYC is that you can live here forever and still stumble upon great new places that you never even knew existed! This was the case with Duplex in the West Village! I had walked by it a dozen times but never knew that within its walls, I might find a cabaret space, a piano bar and karaoke spot!Luckily, I found this out when my choir (The Gotham Rock Choir) held our cycles cabaret performance here this past month! Truly a diamond in the rough for those who are craving something a little bit more outside the box, this is definitely the spot to take out a music lover for an adventurous night out!
I always have an amazing time when I go here. The music is your top 40, and current music dreams. Dancing can go down a little upstairs at the bar. They obviously have the piano bar down stairs which is awesome (gets real crowded) and then upstairs next to the bar/dance area they also have a cabaret room where my friends performed and created a cabaret recently which was super fun.
The Duplex is a must stop on Friday Nights for Simply Sondheim! The host is fun, can sing any song better than any AI dreamer and has been in Broadway shows. The piano player does a fantastic rendition of Le Miz from beginning to end and sings all the parts. In addition, one can ask to sing for open mic if they can really belt a song! Drinks, fun and open until 4:00 AM; I love The Duplex and you will too.
Never ever I will come here!! It was one of my places I go to. Rude bartender upstairs and manager or owner called cops on me and my wife! Bartender told her - you are confused and why are you here( while she was waiting for me to comeback from the bathroom ) she was holding flowers in her hand because it was our anywersary.

2022-02-03Masks and proof of vaccination including boosters are required and checked at the door. The cabaret was small and intimate holding about 50 people. The music of Jessie and Michael was absolutely fabulous. The only thing was that it took an hour to leave because of all the checks were payed after the program was over. There was also a mix up with my friends credit card and he had to search for the waitress to retrieve it. In spite of the issues I would definitely return.

2022-03-07Saw a really cool 2 person show here called 100 days. Really nice performance space for some an intimate play. Hung around and had drinks after. Decent prices and good energy. Little crowded (but where isnt on a Saturday.Wait staff was very friendly. Only critique is signage for the performance couldve been a little better. Would love to see the other shows put on here. The programs were done with a QR code. It wouldve been nice to have paper programs, but thats just my taste. Mixed drinks looked dangerously interesting.

2022-02-27Cozy space in the upstairs Cabaret. Bathroom for the upstairs & downstairs bars, and cabaret are up at the top of the stairs and as one who needs a cane for supportv this isnt an ideal reality. Nevertheless, the show David Colemans CD release party was OffvThe Hook. He killed it. Buy his CD Let the Music Take Control.

2022-06-30Pay for overpriced drinks if you wish!I ordered the Bees Knees drink off of their menu that was listed as a $17 drink. I paid with my credit card. After receiving the drink I looked at the receipt and the drink total was $33.00 ! The price breakdown was listed as follows.... $17 drink, $11 Beefeater Gin (which I didnt ask for)Gratuity $5And on that receipt was a suggestion for an additional tip gratuity? I think i paid more than enough. What an insult!I come out to have a good time. Not to be taken advantage of by these ridiculous rates. Two thumbs down!

2021-12-13I work security at the Duplex, this is a Piano bar/lounge. This is a fun place to be, the bar and drinks are great. The Duplex has been around for about 70 years, its a legendary place. Everytime I work there I usually have fun.

2022-06-16We learned, after heading to the bathrooms upstairs, there is two very separate vibes upstairs and down. The upstairs is cabaret, and night club-esque, while the downstairs is a piano bar and more chit-chat with your counterparts and sing along. We stayed on the bottom floor.... for many many hours (had we known about the cabaret earlier, we may have started there and migrated down). We bellied up to the bar about 10pm, started making friends around 11pm, and headed out around 2am.The bartenders were attentive, fun to joke around with, and INCREDIBLE singers. Not living in NYC, this bar came as a recommendation I am so grateful for the recommendation. We will be back!

2022-03-24This place was so much fun. I went on Friday night with my sister because, she got invited by her friend. We thought it would be a minimum of two drinks stated on the flier but we realized its just like any bar. The location was small but, we got seats right away as we entered. The karoke was fun because we had a choice of picking a song to sing our selves, have anyone sing it or one of the servers or bartender would sing. The bartender there had such a beautiful voice. They had a club upstairs as well. I would visit again to have another fun night.

2022-03-25The outdoor seating is perfect for a sunny day and people watching in the West Village. Inside is great for those that love to sing along. And the upstairs bar and cabaret theater are always fun when there’s something going on up there. Check it out in the heart of the West Village.

2022-01-30The atmosphere is great. Bartenders are the greatest. He listen and is up to date on the area event. If you get tickets to the Cabaret then you start with drinks and end with a really good show..
