The Egg at the Empire State Plazas Center for the Performing Arts in Albany, NY is an excellent venue for music. The Hart Theatre at the Egg seats 982 people and are graduated so that seats in front of us were unobstructed... Not a bad seat in the house. We sat center and we could see very well. Just a great night!
Love shows at the Egg. From the helpfull lobby greeters to the kind elevator operators and friendly ushers, a class act overall. The only complaint would be the ridiculous cost of beer and wine in the lobby. $8 a bottle of beer and/or small glass of wine is excessive especially given that they are not permitted in the theatre.
There was a concert going with a multitude of food vendors. It was loud and vibrating. It was also quite an experience. We enjoyed being able to walk the kids around and listening to music. If youre going for the music sit in front of the stage. The quality of the music is very echoey by the Egg. The Egg itself is quite an epic building. Underneath is a museum we have yet to enjoy ,but it looks very interesting what plaques have been placed around. The structure is surrounded by fountains and art sculptures. Its an incredible feel. Lots of picnic table and stone bench seating.
Took me a few times coming here to not get lost. Love the retro modern concrete buildings and lights. Staff is helpful getting you where you need be and the shows are intimate with pretty good sound. Short walk to good eats and beer at City Beer Hall and coffee at Stacks Espresso Bar make it a great night out in Albany.
I would never go to another show here! What an awful setup! Do not arrive too early for your show because they do not let you in. There is absolutely nothing to do while you wait. Oh sure, you can walk to the local spots in Albany but even using the “walkway” it’s still a hike! I am honestly floored they do not have any restaurants or food vendors right in The Egg. It has not kept up with the times and is a thing of the past. The ushers are absolutely clueless, the place is not well lit so it is very easy to fall trying to find your seat. Even though the ushers have flashlights - they obviously don’t grasp they are supposed to shine them so the patron can see. Parking is a colossal pain the as*! How about some signs directing people to The Egg parking? Then you pull into park and are greeted with sign that let you know your vehicle is subject to search by NYS police. Where the heck are we??? This is supposed to be an event at The Egg not a visit at one of the correctional facilities. Never again! We saw the same show at a different location and enjoyed it so much more. The Egg really ruined the experience for us. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Went to see a hard rock show here (Nightwish). The building is beautiful, the staff is very kind, the lighting rig is very nice with tons of conventional fixtures, and the venue has great acoustics. That is where my praise ends. The sound system in the room is absolutely awful. I am a event sound and lights professional and it was clear throughout the night that this was not enough rig for the gig.The subs were tubby and not clear and the tops were clearly being driven to their max and the room was not even all that loud. There were many times the vocals couldnt carry above the instrumentation.I didnt take measurements, but, my best guess is it was hovering around 95dba where I was (not loud at all for a metal show).
Musician friends got tickets for Adrian Belew, so I drove up from Philly for the show. This is such an amazing venue. Big enough to hold a good crowd and small enough to still be really intimate. The show, sound and seats were astounding. I wish I lived closer. Seriously, this is a phenomenal place to see anything.
Another example of an attractive building, constructed from extorted tax funds, and administered by an eleven-member board hand-picked in sweetheart back-scratching cronyist deals by NYs legislators and governor. The edifice itself contains two theatres which stage haute culture in the form of ballets and plays.
A very nice experience, aside from the parking garage it is fairly refined. Theaters are clean and well designed. Sound is great. Too bad no drinks are allowed in the theater itself (aside from bottled water) - it would be nice to have a glass of wine while enjoying the show.
The show was puddles pity party and the opening act was a man from Canada who I found to be familiar in a way, talented both in comedy and playing the guitar. Maybe also in scripting music. One opening cord that I noticed he like to play over and over during his pick up line routine, reminded me of an unfinished song that I once got to hear from two unknown local artist. Wonder if they ever got to finish it? Anyhow Puddles at first to me was hard to comprehend, due to the performances I researched on line. Then realized his dry simple comedic Andy Kaufman style genius was misunderstood by me, and I was expecting more of the outstanding musically inclined vocals that I saw online. But I got the sense that he was maybe for some reason really more relaxed in this beautifully artistically designed performing complex. My only complaint about the night was the fact that I was unable to get back on the elevator on the same floor I got off at to catch a smoke. Instead I had to go down to the blue colored floor which took longer for me to get back. But reminded me just now of a MEETING that I have long been overdue to and, should have started by now!
The Egg is known for the performances that have been there, but for me its Kevin Smith premiering Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, or Sal Vulcano from Impractical Jokers, or a live Q&A with explorer Josh Gates. Seating is perfect. No matter where you sit, its a perfect view.
Great small venue. Loved the projector screen for the far side. We had L orchestra seats, last seats in the row...part of the stage is blocked off by the speakers, but the screens take care of that! Just have. I had a hard time not dancing... thats the only real downside to this venue in my humble opinion.
Great Space to see a Show....Colossal Pain in the A*s to get to and to find the underground parking thats actually not gated and closed. Folks very helpful when they take your ticket, and direct you to your Section/seat.However, after the Show there is NO ONE to help direct you out of there, the couple of folks standing around have no idea which way to Madison Ave, Washington Ave, which elevator etc.....Took us a very long time to get out of there....
It looks like a relic of an older time, but I can assure you that this venu has still got it. Nestled in the incredible Empire Plaza, the two listening rooms at the egg are incredible venues with excellent sound, and no bad seats in the house. If there is a band there you would like to see, id recommend going.
A great performing arts and cultural events center, that is also a renowned architectural landmark of the City, this venue is nestled in the heart of downtown Albany NY. The Center is conveniently connected to the underground Concourse, with shopping, dining, banks, public parking and handicap access available. This is a photo of a fabulous performance at the annual Festival of Nations event that takes place on the last Sunday of October. Thank you for the wonderful experiences, The Egg.
Great place, Ive been bringing my family and friends here for years, from ballet, to mermaid theater, to the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Always a great show. Wish there was a bit of signage on which side was left vs right side of Hart theater. But always a great experience.
Saw Kenny Wayne Shepard with front row seats! The box office could not have been more helpful! I always prefer to buy directly from the venue whenever possible instead of paying the inflated prices from other resellers. The show was wonderful and you could tell people were just really glad to be there. Masks were required.
The theatre inside the Egg is a fantastic place to see! & hear a concert! The acoustics are wonderful! It is a small, intimate place to see a show! (It seats about 500 people!). I would highly recommend it for a show! (We saw Ann Wilson of Heart!, and she put on a terrific show!)
The venue is a nice place to see a show. However, went skeptically last night & was very disappointed in lack of Covid protocol. No temp checks & many in audience had removed masks. A very loud and obnoxious woman (sitting behind me) who screamed to the band throughout the show, was one of them. Although Im fully vaccinated & wear a mask, I was uncomfortable in the close unmasked surrounding. Last show for me until ???
Both theaters in the egg have great acoustics, but when busier events happen, be prepared for a bit of a wait (especially for the women’s restroom) as there is limited capacity. Pro tip: Use the restrooms on the concourse level prior to entry - no te that they usually don’t open until about an hour before showtime.
The two venues here are superb. 450 or 950 seats and the sound quality is great. My favorite Capital District venue. Highly recommended. Still the best in 2022, with rational pricing, too. Performers enjoy it and often return. Aoife ODonovan has been here 15 times, as of last night.
We saw Almost Queen and the sound was excellent. The theater is really nice and we had plenty of leg room. They have free parking. You can park and walk to any restaurant before the show or just check out Albany. We ate at Jacks Oyster House before the show and the food was great. I am looking forward to seeing other shows there.
This place is awesome. There is not a bad seat in the house. The exterior is striking but the shape matches the interior which is covered with beautiful would acoustical paneling. The sound quality is outstanding. We travelled from Rochester to see a favorite performer and were so impressed by the show in this special place. Its worth the trip to see a show at the Egg.
Been going here many years and this place has amazing sound and great seating no matter where you are . I was there to hear a band called the Suffers. I think the sound was just amazing but wish there was a little more promotion of the band. Small venues are great like this because you can interact more with the artist. Will be going here again.
Excellent venue that doesnt seem to have a bad seat in the house. The process to get up to the theater from main concourse is a little bit of a burden and time consuming especially after waiting to get into visitor parking lot. Would park on Street and walk into when but hard to manage with 2 little ones and temps in the teens. The venue is worth the wait in line and provides a great overall experience, just factor in extra time for parking and to get into theater.
This is an amazing venue to see shows, comidians, etc. Its almost intimate, only seating about 1000, and there is no bad seat. Parking is easy and abundant, and only $5. Easy walk to the elevators, then an easy walk to your seat. Handicap friendly. I will eagerly go back to see a show.
I went to a comedy show held at the egg for 10pm showing. Free parking at the museum, then you can walk in at the entrance to the plaza near there. You can pick up tickets at the ticket booth there. The line to get in can get long, and everyone is ushered upstairs by elevator which can take a while. Theres a candy/drink bar upstairs, but theres not really food allowed inside of the venue. Seating is pretty in any spot. Inside is pretty clean and beautiful with a decent amount of room. No pictures are allowed inside. I would definitely go again.
The unique architecture is appealing though it does lead to a little confusion. Ive had many friendly and enjoyable experiences here for concerts, comedy, and childrens programming. Parking can be difficult and /or expensive, but thats downtown Albany. Very friendly staff, from ushers to elevator operators and at the box office.
Saw Railroad Earth on Valentines day 2019. Awesome show. Always great acoustics. Intimate feel. Hassle free. Line for drinks was long... Not a concert bar setting like you often get with RRE. Not as much dancing. But much easier to see the show than at the theaters that dont have seating.
The Egg is such a fabulous venue for entertainment! It is located in downtown Albany and is recognized by its shape: egg-like. My husband and I have seen many groups perform and gave always been delighted by the variety and musical excellence of the performers. Tonight we heard Marty Stuart and his band. We saw Marty Stuart on the PBS series Country Music and were impressed by Martys contributions to the documentary. The show was very well-done. Marty and his band were well-rehearsed, played brilliantly, and sang with excellent harmonies. I am not a country music fan, but the music and stories were more than country; they were engaging and impressive. If Marty Stuart is coming to your town, but a ticket and enjoy the show!
The Egg is my favorite concert venue of all time. Acoustics are great. There are two concert halls. The Swyer theater is the smaller of the two, and although it seats several hundred people, it feels very intimate. I only have two complaints: 1. I long for the old days when ushers would only let people in between songs, not during a song. That complaint applies to pretty much every venue nowadays. 2. Getting out of the theater and back to your car can be confusing, with stairs that dont lead where you think they might and elevators that are jam- packed. But the concerts are top- notch, and the setting in the capital plaza is awe- inspiring.
Whats not to love? From the fascinating architecture to the comfortable seats, tasty concessions, fantastic sight lines, excellent acoustics, intimate setting, personable volunteers...Oh yeah. You also get tons of great artists because of an outstanding booking staff. Enjoy!
Fantastic venue with great sound (sometimes the bands turn it up too loud, due to their experince in poorer rooms). Seats are comfortable. Bathrooms are limited as is beverage/beer service. You can park in the parking garage underneath for $5-10 and never have to walk outside - this is great in the winter as you can leave the bulky coat in the car. Not sure, but I do believe the bar is cash only. Note that there is not always a bar.
Great seats...lots of leg room, ushers to help . Dont think there is a bad seat in the heart theater. Found easy peeling but website didnt tell you much about the parking availability. Will only go to the egg. Will never spend another penny going to the times union center againTU seats are narrow and you kiss your knees the whole time. The egg had comfortable seating with great leg room.
Great quirky venue as youre quite literally in a giant cement egg. Ive seen two shows there now and each time finding parking was a breeze ($5 for events), the staff are friendly and helpful and there isnt a bad seat for either stage (the big stage or smaller stage). Do be mindful of what elevator you take though as getting back to your car can be a little confusing.
I just want to make it clear this is for the Eggs staff and not the show.. We had VIP tickets to our show, and when i got to the booth i had my ID ready and the women there said no need and just have me my collectable ticket and lanyard 😬.. So you gave out two $120 tickets without id? Nice.. When we entered the show we where asked what our ticket numbers where and were just directed wear the seats where, again no one ever looked at my tickets. Most of the staff seemed uninterested in being there . Then durring the show the performer had to give the lighting controller direcyions on how the spots where supposed to be set; 1 not 2 and tighter. She even mentioned why did we even have a sound check. Overall the theater staff just seemed to not care about anything. Seats are great, all of them have a good view of the stage and the sound in the building is wonderful.. The staff are just sub-par.
Beautiful center from the outside. With its unique shape it really stands out with the classic architecture accross the street with the capital. The whole open mall is wonderful to view and enjoy the reflection pond with the Egg as a backdrop as well as the buildings on the other side. It is really worth the walk from the capital even if you cant get inside. So many great reviews makes me wish that I could have gotten a tour or seen a performance there.
Great concert hall. Best acoustics Ive ever heard. Good place to see touring artists in an intimate setting, 300-500 seats. Acts like Boz Scaggs, The Byrds, Marty Stuart, Robin Trower, NRBQ, JMo and Deebs, etc. Beer and wine available in lobby but only drink allowed in Hall is water. Comfortable theater seating.
Show I saw here was phenomenal. To quote the person on stage the worst present you can get for someone who just got an abortion is a to go box. Its a nice small space and all seats are fairly close to the stage. I drove two hours to get here and was not disappointed.
I was fortunate enough to see The Cotton Club which is a motion picture at the egg. At first I thought the screen would be too small and that the experience was not going to be immersive however I found it to be quite immersive and wonderful the surround sound system was epic! Not to mention the descending seats which were very spacious and gave you plenty of visibility
Beautiful place! A smaller more intimate setting. We saw the Chris DElia comedy show (as you can see from the picture, we got to meet him!!!!!) and it was great! We sat in the pit about 5 rows back from the stage and it was amazing seats! However it seemed like all the seats would be ol considering it is a smaller venue. The only negative part is how they get you to the correct floor of the Egg, we had to wait in this huge line to be put on an elevator packed with way too many people to get to the correct floor. Rumor had it there was an escalator somewhere that you could use, If so definitely use that. Also the very small Bar there only serves a small selection of beer and wine, as well as a few candy treats. The bar is cash only so use an ATM..... they dont check anything so bring in your own alcohol.... nips!!!
Saw Mike Gordon here. The sound was INCREDIBLE. General Admission is not a good idea here though. Oh yeah, the concert was sold out when I went to buy tickets, but the ticket booth attendant worked some magic and somehow found me a couple tickets. It took a couple of hours but he pulled through. He went even as far as taking my phone number and contacting me back after getting with his manager. Totally awesome. Wanted to throw him some extra dollars for his efforts and he totally declined the tip. Customer service at its finest.
I saw a great group, Darlingside with a youth group orchestra. Cant recommend them highly enough. I found the Eggs sound bright for my taste. Individual voices got lost in the mix. I feel they should analyze the room and make sound corrections. I was in the small theater.
I luv this place it small & intimate u have a great view from any angle & it feels like there singing just 2u i have heard great music, dance u name it and the ticket prices fantastic. This is mel-e-mel aka melissa take yourself, a date or a friend and the shape of the building is soooo cool. The spacecraft has landed u will understand when u c it lol lol
We saw comedian Chris Hardwick there. Its a very nice venue. The only problem I had was that the seats in front of us were empty. Almost 3 whole rows in the center were empty. If those seats were available when I purchased my tickets, I would have got two of them. Im not sure why they werent available, but it annoyed me.
Egg is not a good place for a free show ,no that is wrong .Music was good but ,i was kindly ask to leave because i needed to sit ,no chairs .so i asked ogs gave chair securty would not let me sit or have chair in egg . so was painstakingly had to go .i am dis able ,bad feet ,bad legs ,much pain .must sit . Owell that is my egg or wall flower show ,great music ,BAD EGG,all good ,life goes on.
If you want to spend time in a dirty & ugly place come to Albany. it wont disappoint you. they Empire State Plaza we built right in the middle of the community kill what charm was left. so the the capitol of the great state of TAXES is just another trash bin. they are taking a beautiful state and killing its beauty and history.
The Egg is the vantage point of Albany. The terrace offers great views of all the prominent places to see in Albany.I visited the place on a day when there were no shows and reconstruction was going on in the lower level. The underground concourses leading to the Egg are good and something that I havent seen in any other American city.(PS - An edit/addition will be in place once I see plays or concerts here!)
I purchased tickets for go see Burt Kreischer for 1/23, it was icey out that night, multiple winter weather advisories, and completely unsafe to drive, they refused to switch my tickets to the next day or issue me a refund. I will never let these people take my money again, 80$ down the drain.

2022-04-11Excellent concert venue. Friendly staff. All seating is excellent in an indoor amphitheater where you never seem too far from the stage. We were able to purchase tickets at the box office the day of the concert. Great concert experience!

2022-05-10Often have good performances here, including a dance series. Saw Pilobolus dance and quite enjoyed it. Main theater is comfortable with good sight lines from almost all seats. Convenient but $10 parking under plaza.

2022-06-18Nice intimate venue. All seats give a great view of stage and performances. Parking is painful to get out of so stay in your seats and take your time on departure.

2021-12-13We visited in October 2021, but only from the outside. Such a unique building, it begs you to take its photograph. Very nice urban park and water setting just across the street from the State Capitol.

2022-02-23Great venue! Bit off an odd entrance, you go down an escalator just to walk through check point to go back up an elevator, but I imagine its for crowd control. The seats are a bit snug (and Im a pretty small lady) but the layout is very nice. Very small concession options but thats to be expected given how unexpectedly small the venue is once you get in.
