Classic local spot! Ironically called the Expat.Vietnamese Pork chop (com thit nuong) is legit and the bevvie program is fire. “Putin on the Schvitz” is a revelation of a cocktail and goes down too smooth. Today I got the comfort chicken noodle galangal soup. Hit the spot.Hattip to Ally and Eric Van Hannon for holding this place down with heart and soul. The staff are all living In love. Bravo and run it back!
The Expat presents itself as a very appealing night out with interesting food choices. However, the staff was fine and the food wasn’t much better, fine. I expected there to be a bit more flavor in the stir fry I ordered but it just came out bland. Prices are a bit high. I definitely wouldn’t say avoid this place but there’s definitely better options around.
Tucked away on a quiet side street between the 125th train entrance and riverside park. They have a rustic interior (wooden beams & booths, concrete floor) with a central bar and plenty of outdoor seating as well. They also have a projector that plays on a wall in back (Im unsure about special events like screenings, etc.). I really like the feel of this place as its quiet, has delicious food and their drinks are on par with a dedicated cocktail bar in my opinion. You have to try one of their types of cauliflower wings, they are just so so good.
One of the top places ive been to in manhattan, easily. The staff is bright and charming. The outdoor seating is well spaced. The drinks are strong. I was debating with my friend if the firecracker wings here were among the best of manhattan, they were that good. But honestly so was everything else. Lemongrass porkchop was a big portion. Didnt love the fried chicken sandwich.
The Expat is a great pub to go for after work. They have a super nice place, that gives a nice vibe of an Irish pub with Asian influences. They have a variety of unique cocktails which you should try. Otherwise they offer a good beer selection. When I went there they had 4 beers on tap and several bottles. The food is amazing! We started with the cauliflower wings and tofu appetizer. The sauce of both dishes is delicious, you have to try it.The entre was the beyond meat burger. Great made with a lot of fries. You will definitely be satisfied. The dessert was the lava cake. Amazing! A great Finale for a wonderful time. The service was all the time great. All people are friendly and ensure that you have a great time. When you have the chance, go here it is a great experience!
This is one of the local places that you don’t want to write a review about because you don’t want to share it with more people …When ever I came here me and my friends had amazing food. They offer a wide variety of drinks and if that is not enough for you they also make you a customized drink.Decorations are thoughtful and create an interesting vibe
Wish I had known about this place pre covid.. we got a peak of the interior and love the retro vibe. Clueless was playing in a projector in the back. Currently have open outdoor seating on both sides of the corner block. Staff was super sweet and let us use the bathroom.
Really awesome place... they decorated the place with a home-ish feel. We had our company xmas party and it was great. The food was great they ordered appetizers and had drink tickets for us. Bathrooms are clean and fresh... lots of Instagram moments. Entrance is handicap accessible and steps. Overall cool place... Id definitely go with friends..
I really like this place for drinks and food, especially in the location it’s at, it’s a great part of the neighborhood. However, my issue is the way they label things as gluten free when they’re not. I have celiac disease and it’s very important the waitstaff know things are not cross contaminated. For example, if, say, the wings are gluten free however they’re fried in the same oil as gluten containing foods, they’re cross contaminated and no longer gluten free. I have been cross contaminated more than once at this place, I gave them the benefit of the doubt the first time but the next time I realized they label things gluten free for people who eat GF for the trend of it.But I’m not gluten free for the “trend” of it, I have a real condition, similar to if you carelessly gave somebody an allergen, if they label things as gluten free they should not contain any gluten whatsoever it is all or nothing.
Wow. Hidden gem off the beaten path. Weve been here a few times. First when it had just opened for drinks. Craft cocktails done very well, and very consistent. There is a cocktail for everyone it seems.Food was great too. The nachos werent typical. We also had the Singapore noodles and beef curry. Curry was amazing as was the noddles as recommended by the bar.Service was great too. Bartenders friendly and make you feel very welcome.Definitely adding this place into the regular rotation.
Bar food was pretty good.. the oink from the naughty section was good but the flavor made me think chinese spare ribs..not bad but different for pork..the amount of melted cheese balanced to the food. The drinks were on point..Id come back just for the drinks especially the freakie tiki
Really good food at good prices for the portion. Their bar food is yum, their thai is pretty authentic compared to others locally and delicious. Love the veggie pickles and the curries and chicken sandwich! Eating in pre covid was fun and lively but now we do delivery, order directly from their website for the best prices and good service.
Its rare in NYC that you see a place thats good for single people on tinder dates, group brunch and older families with kids. One of the best restaurants uptown, Ive been going here for months now and the food/staff never disappoint. The menu has a few seasonal changes so I can try new things and the cocktails are very creative and different. Music and vibe is also on point, highly recommend.
Everything on the menu is so good. Too recommendations are:1) Chicken and mochi waffles - chicken was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The waffles might be the best Ive ever tasted2) vegatarian Singaporean street noodles - definitely very Americanized, but I liked how the tofu was minced and not over powering.
Im rooting for this place based on proximity, styling, friendliness of the staff and drink quality. Really enjoyed the prosecco and cocktails Ive had so far at The Expat. But, the food menu. Welllll, Id hold out a while until the full menu is presented and the kinks worked out. The Caesar salad is overpriced for some iceberg lettuce. The shrimp dumplings were passable. The pork sliders were satisfying on an unexpectedly tasty and function English muffin.Update: many moons later the menu has expanded and been refined. Its delicious. The pork nachos -- all day, every day. That poor lettuce wedge still exists tho.
Truly outstanding food! So happy to have this place just around the corner from Columbia...they have plenty of outside sitting currently which is super nice. The server was so nice and knowledgeable and recommended just the drink that I needed :-) Will be visiting more often once the university fully reopens!
Came for happy hour. Arrived a little before opening and they were very kind and let me order early while waiting for my colleagues. Friendly staff . Reasonably priced. Drinks and apps were tasty. Ambiance slightly louder than I would have liked. But overall positive experience. Will go back .
Great atmosphere. I love how the bar is right below street level. It means that inside the windows are just a bit elevated from your table, which has a well like feel. The staff was helpful, although they mixed up our tabs. All in all I like the bar and will come back. Its conveniently located a few minutes away from the 125th St 1 train stop.
Went with a friend yesterday for happy hour and stayed until nearly 10 p.m. This new addition to Morningside Heights has a comfortable, homey atmosphere. We sat in a roomy booth near the front door and watched all the dog walkers and families go by while we sipped our Kumquat Spritzers (a great refreshing summer vodka cocktail) and yummy Vietnamese summer rolls and Thai sausages.
This was my first time ordering from this restaurant. I can’t speak for the deco, service, or ambience but the food was horrible. I ordered a simple basil chicken fried rice and the firecracker wings which claimed to be spicy sweet and sour. Well the food wasn’t warm, the fried rice was soggy and tasted bland. The chicken wings were just your regular bbq wings that you could get for $5 (if I am going by taste and presentation) at any bbq fast food. Let’s just say, next time I’ll be taking that $34 dollars spent to my local restaurant where I can get the same for $20 (without the soggy rice and bland tasteless bbq wings).
This is the very first time that I’m writing a review for anything, but this is a must. First, I personally would like to have a conversation with whoever thought that putting a BAR in a RESIDENTIAL neighborhood is a good idea. Claremont Avenue was a relatively quiet and peaceful place to live in. Notice that I use WAS. This bar has changed everything. Whenever I open the window at night, all I hear is noise and music playing way too loud than it should. I understand that I live in nyc and I should expect noise, but Claremont Avenue is a residential neighborhood and secluded from broadway. And it’s not like we don’t have enough bars in the area. There’s two across the street! And all I hear while I’m trying to sleep is drunk people talking loudly as they leave the bar. Ever since the bar came, I repeatedly hear fights and presumably drunk people coming out of the bar fighting and cursing at each other. How disrespectful, inappropriate, and rude that is when you take the elderly and young children living in the area into account. I live on the fifth floor of a building in the area, but can still hear the noise. It’s disruptive when you’re trying to work and simply inconvenient and annoying. I don’t mind the bar if it keeps the noise down and if people don’t stumble out drunk and fight and curse at each other while the bar closes and I’m trying to sleep. Unfortunately fans not the way that it is and this bar needs to go! It’s a huge inconvenience and annoyance for everyone living in the neighborhood!

2022-06-18Really cute place. Staff was very accommodating. They can make mocktails from the cocktails they have. We had brunch and it was delicious!

2022-03-27I really like The Expat for what they offer, a decent beer and drinks selection and good Asian food. However, they seem to be extremely disingenuous when serving vegans and vegetarians. My girlfriend is a born and raised vegetarian. On numerous occasions, she has asked the staff specifically to make sure the cooks don’t add any fish or oyster sauce. And just about every time (3 out of 5), her food has a slight odor and taste of fish and she gets seriously ill because she’s allergic to seafood. This is both seriously frustrating and maddening. And I feel awful for my girlfriend who gets sick in the process.

2022-01-09Great little spot I stumbled upon with Asian fusion food and other goodies. Looks like it could be a great date spot but it was perfect for me solo at the bar. Will def be back to try some of their cocktails

2022-03-30I love this place. They have a great selection of drinks to fit anyones needs and the food is on point. Be sure to check out their new late night menu. The atmosphere is fantastic anytime of day or year. It’s the perfect post(or pre) concert/rehearsal hang. The staff is fantastic, friendly, and inventive. They really value their customers. Cheers!

2022-06-27We had the firecracker wings, shrimp dimsums, chicken nachos, chicken burger, and Singapore Noodles. For drinks we ordered 2 LIITs (The Blue Drink) and 1 house lager.Everything was great except the Singapore Noodles - will not recommend that. Giving a 5* rating despite the really dry noodles because the wings, nachos and dimsums were outright winners! The Blue Drinks are restricted to 2 per person for a good reason and the staff was really friendly too :)

2022-02-15The pad thai was flavorful, and we got some loaded tater tots which was great! My only complaint is the drinks are a bit expensive. Will definitely go back to try some more dishes!

2022-01-29I really like this place. Fun environment, nice decor. Great happy hour deals until 6. Food is pretty good, a bit on the oily side but lots of nice options. Chicken curry is great. The wings are good. Pad Thai and fried rice pretty standard

2021-09-09A great local bar with amazing food, cocktails, and a fun atmosphere. Their cauliflower wings are other-worldly, and they have a great happy hour menu. The staff is always lovely and they decorate beautifully for the seasons. Try the hard kombucha!

2022-04-20We love the ExPat and visit every time we are in NY. The food is so thoughtfully prepared and delicious. And the drinks are great too! My kids favorite is the Curried Lemon Pepper Tofu Bites - and they dont even like tofu! I love everything Ive ever eaten here, but on our last visit I devoured the Vietnamese Papaya Salad. There are lots of veggies in all of the dishes which is really nice. Ive only eaten in, but I think this food would also work great as take-out. The servers and bar tenders were all really nice and attentive, and the decor is wonderful!
