The Farmers Museum in other cities:
Great experience for kids and adults. Lots of history to soak up along with real life examples of life in the 1840s. With live animals to see, working exhibits, era games, and a carousel, there’s enough to keep everyone entertained for a couple of hours. Definitely a place to visit when in or around Cooperstown.
Highly recommend a visit to this unique museum. There is so much to experience and the staff really bring to life what it was like living in an old country town. The buildings are fun to explore, and the staff are extremely knowledgeable and interactive. Everytime I visit I learn something new and exciting.
There is more to see than just farming. Really interesting and informative for the casual history lover. Some of the buildings have traditional museum displays and some of them have historical guides doing specific activities like weaving or blacksmithing. The wallpaper expert was so friendly and amazing. I strongly suggest that you bring plenty of drinks and snacks because we did not see a single vending machine, water fountain, etc. The water cooler at the front entrance was empty and they had some bottled drinks but the ice had run out so they were warm. I’m really surprised they don’t sell drinks like fresh lemonade, considering that they have not one but two gift shops… I enjoyed going here as a kid and it was really fun to revisit as an adult, I think this is a great place for all ages.
It’s almost liking stepping back to the 1840s. The Farmers Museum includes a preindustrial village that has been painstakingly recreated on this spot right outside Cooperstown. Visitors can meander through the village and speak to costumed employees about the various goings on. Hopefully the New York State Carosel will be able to accept riders soon. In any case The Farmers Museum is a fun place to spend an afternoon.
Would have given them 5 stars. But do to COVID most houses were closed. I think since NY Gov. Has relaxed mask rulings around May 25/26, still some houses closed. You can see the Merry Goround in motion, but cannot ride it. Blacksmith shop is open and inside of building where you pay your entry fee.
Great historic site to visit with the family and kids of all ages! Informative and fun, super clean & well kept. All staff very knowledgeable and pleasant. Allow at least 2hrs minimal if you go thru this fast, or 4hrs or more if your pace is slower. Restaurant on site. Bathrooms and museum gift shop in site. Highly recommended. Also, 1$ carousel rides!
If you have ever been fascinated by the world as it once was, people as they once were and life in general before modernity, then this is the place for you! This is a living breathing little village, animals and all, preserved as it was before electricity, during the golden age of machinery and hard work. There is so much to see and to do,Just about anyone of any age will be able to find something that they enjoy.
Super fun and engaging museum which recreates what living in a rural farm town in the 1800’s is like. Ride the carousel, watch a blacksmith in action, see how food was traditionally prepared, get up close to horses/pigs/sheep/chickens/turkeys, and enjoy the beautiful green slopes of the golf course across the road and Lake Otesaga. Also very close to the Fenimore Art Museum.
Beautiful place and very interesting for the whole family. It reproduces a 1845 town. In the stores around town you will find the pharmacist or blacksmith in full costume who will explain how things worked at the time and they will answer all your questions or your childrens questions, demos in situ. The farm and the animals are very cute, we were fortunate to meet the new additions, the 2 month old baby cow and the little chicks. We had a great time.
Ride the old fashioned carousel. The little village houses and out buildings take you back in time. Some of these buildings have been moved from other places in NY to be preserved. Incredible. Kids can enjoy looking at animals and a horse-drawn wagon ride for the family is a must. Plan to spend about half a day. Everything is within walking distance.
We enjoyed seeing the demonstration that were presented. The carousel was amazing. There was so much history in it. The woman who talked about the carousel had so much knowledge about it. It was very interesting hearing about making medication from plants back in the day. I would recommend this place for everyone.
A must visit if you are out in Cooperstown. Staff amazing, the demonstrations were really cool and the kids loved the animals. My only negative critique would be the cafes food and menu, it lacks the same pizaz of the rest of the facility. Overall a fantastic family day ❤
Very disappointing they were supposed to have wagon rides and didnt have them. Boring, I have gone to Harvest fest in past and enjoyed our families time there. Autumn celebration was boring. I will never go to farmers museum again. They were not going to let us in because my grandson who just turned two days before and has never worn or had to wear a mask before would not put one on. Security made a big scene we finally asked if he went around admission building with his father instead of in it could we go in. Se said she had to call supervisor and after he agreed she let the rest of the family through with the understanding the 2 year old had to remain outside at all times
This was a lot of fun! Staff were so informative and friendly! Its easy to navigate and everything is at your own pace. The old houses and buildings are kept up nicely without ruining the structure and feel of being from another century. The goats are super social and were accepting of ALL the scritches!Definitely try the chili dog from the cafe, the chili had big ol chunks of peppers in it I dont care if it comes in a big tub frozen man it was good! Id love to come back in a few years!
Right in downtown Cooperstown, this place is an absolute gem. This is a great fun and hands-on educational opportunity for children and of great interest for adults who take interest in nineteenth century colonial life. There are reenactors in several locations: Printing Press, Blacksmith, Pharmacy, etc, as well as live performances in the square next to the cafe. There are crops, gardens and livestock to interact with. Draught horses and a carriage ride available. The facilities are clean and renovated/updated, many recently.
Weve been to the museum a few times over the years. The best time to visit and see it come to life is on a weekend in season or for one of their special events. where you learn from those who spend time in the roles of those from the past. We visited for their event this passed weekend Thanksgiving at the Farmers Museum. We watched the blacksmith make a spatula, learned to stencil, learned about what students were learning from a school teacher, as well as about printmaking and how to created a throat drop from the apothecary. Wed highly recommend coming in the colder months when they are open for special events as well as in the warmer months to experience life in the past. Such a fun outing for a family where history really does come alive.
It was an fantastic experience for us and our children! The childrens program led by Michelle was especially educational and fun! We learned and saw a lot of things from 1800 and animals, the merry-go-round at the end was a highlight for the kids. We went across the street, behind the Fenimore Art Museum, and had a delightful picnic by the lake. Strongly recommend it to everyone!
I was at the Farmers Museum today, what a disappointment! There was no one to tell us any information on the building, the plants, the medicinal plants! I went there to learn, but it was just a site seeing wasted trip. I couldnt even go upstairs in the barn to see the old tools and equipment! One could run around in the lower level of barn but not in the top ? where the history was? WTH? I will never go back, very disappointing. If they werent going to have the things or the people to tell you the history they should have said something before I paid my money!
So I drove a LONG way to get there and found them all set up with a COVID line - masks NOT optional, hand sanitizer lined up and COVID security ready to take you down if you werent a sheep and wearing a mask. I told them I will NEVER put a mask back on my face and would not be visiting. Ended up finding a nice cruise down the lake instead. Boycotting the overzealous Marxists demanding compliance at the Farmers Museum.
Wow what a wonderful place. The workers are unbelievably wonderful. We were the only visitors to some buildings and we were treated like there was a full house going through every routine and giving us a personable experience. The workers truly want you to have a good time and will explain anything for you. Free parking was also nice. The Carousel is an amazing piece of art. Rides are just $1. Its an educational piece because with parts representing various parts of the area. Its a must when you go there.
19th Century Comes Alive! The Farmers Museum demonstrates life in the 19th century and shows some of the jobs and occupations of the time. The staff are very knowledgeable and willing to share their excitement. Its a beautiful place to get outdoors for a while and enjoy a little piece of history.
We have been here repeatedly and always had a fantastic time, even on rainy days. Educational, beautiful, great little details like shady places to eat and clean bathrooms, fun events, rotating exhibits, very very kid friendly but fun and interesting for the adults as well. The highlight is the carousel for the toddler, and events like Hopsego and the special things they did for Mothers Day make it worth the repeated trips. Affordable admission but worth membership for people who love nearby.
Excellent experience. The interpreters (actors/employees) are patient and informative. My 8-year old got to set type and personalize a printing. The blacksmith was excellent and made nails for the kids. The buildings and grounds are well maintained. Overall a wonderful time.
What an absolutely wonderful place to take your family. There is so much to do and see at the Farmers Museum! Coming here is really like taking a step back in time. There are so many wonderful exhibits, a re-created village with authentic old buildings, a real old-fashioned working carousel to ride, horse-drawn wagon rides, live demonstrations, live farm animals, and so much more! Make sure that you plan to spend all day here so that you can have time to properly see everything 🙂 There are also picnic tables scattered throughout the site, so you can sit down and eat a picnic lunch if you choose. Theres also a snack shop that serves refreshments, and easily accessible restrooms throughout. All in all it is a very gorgeous, carefully-maintained interactive museum, and well worth your time. I highly recommend!
We were there just after they finally opened following the quarantine. Even though you cant walk inside the many old farm houses on display here at this time, one can still look into them from door step, good enough for now. The staff kept the grounds pristine and the live animals still roam around the grounds. Baseball hall of fame was still closed so this is pretty much it for Cooperstown at this time.
This place exceeded my expectations. The folks working there really seemed to enjoy their roles and we really enjoyed learning some of the things we did. The only unfortunate part is because of the pandemic most of the buildings were closed to entrance but you could see inside most of them.
Awesome place to visit with little ones. It has a blacksmith where you can learn to make a ring out of a nail. It has an area for young children to play and learn whats on a farm. It has farm animals. It has a cute carousel. It even has a little cafe. We spent 5 hours with the kids there and they enjoyed it the entire time. I definitely recommend this place!
The farmers museum is a really neat place to visit, especially if youre a bit of a history buff! Very nice to walk through and see all the neat buildings. Interpreters dress in period clothing, often do demonstrations of what people who lived back in the mid to late 1800s did in their day to day lives, and are always happy to talk with you and answer any questions you may have! There are also a good few farm animals to see, and maybe pet as well. As of the writing of this review: certain restrictions are in place due to ongoing covid-19 concerns. As of this time, you cannot walkthrough any buildings (except for the main one that you enter through), but you can look into them, and may have an interpreter nearby who can give you more information. Overall the farmers museum is certainly worth a visit if youre in the area!
Great look back at life about 150- 200 yrs ago or so......If you take your time and enjoy it, it takes about 2hrs to go through it. (2 adults w/2 kids). If you wanted to rush....you could certainly go faster (or slower). It is very similar to Old Sturbridge Village in Mass, but only about 1/3 the size. My wife thought it was a little nicer/cleaner/better kept. My daughter loved the old schoolhouse. The towns folk are very knowledgeable and enjoy the conversation.
This is a must every time we go to Cooperstown.. My family first went when I was 8 years old in 1966. I fell in love at first sight. It has changed a lot over the decades and has become more authentic to the time period. We live a long ways away now but we try to visit whenever we are in the area. I recommend taking your time to enjoy this living, breathing museum.
I very much enjoy this living museum. They have assembled an entire farm village, circa 1840, of various period buildings, a cemetery, crops, and livestock to educate the public and give a taste of the bygone rural life of New York State. The staff, in appropriate period dress, demonstrate aspects of life in those times. They are knowledgeable and welcome questions. They also feature exhibits of antique farm tools, printing presses, pharmaceutical herb gardens, musical instruments, workshops, and the like. In addition exhibits focus on the history and contemporary farm contributions to our lives; like a current exhibit on craft beer making. There is a small theater on the site, where I saw a production of A Christmas Carol last winter. There is a good gift shop as well, where such treats as maple sugar candy can be found, along with books, handicrafts, and the like.Just across the street is the Fennimore Art Museum, with a fine collection of Native American and Folk Art. Immediately behind that museum, one can take in views of Lake Ostego. This museum is well worth a visit, especially if visiting the area with children.
A very interesting museum. Very nice exhibits. Really liked seeing all the old tools used by crafts people of the era. Also the enjoyed seeing theevolution of farm implements. The docents in the historical village were great and very informative. I highly recommend a visit to the Farmer Museum.
What an incredible place. You have am amazing experience, and learn a lot. The docents and reenactors are so knowledgeable. Plus it is very interactive, all you have to do is talk and you can touch or try. Cute and interesting animals and plants. Its a real farm. Food is interesting on feast and event days. Cafe food could be a little better and beer every day would be nice additions. It is really magical, so we love it. Proud members.
We had a great time at the harvest festival. There was so much to do. Food, vendors, animals, a carousel. Its really pretty there and pleasant to walk around. There are people there doing demonstrations wearing period clothing so you feel like youre stepping back in time.
This is a great museum for the whole family. It has lots of interesting exhibits, fun things for the kids to see and do, and enough to keep everyone entertained for hours. We love the NYS themed carousel! I would not recommend eating here, though, there was one cafe but it was small with limited choices, there was a tavern on the map but we never found that. There are plenty of places in town to eat or pack a lunch and picnic at Glimmerglass State Park. The trolley is also a wonderful convenience; park in one of the free lots and take the trolley all over town all day!
It always seems like its the facility staffs first time on the job when we are there and the food has become much less of late at the cafes Ever since the herders cottage was made into just a gift shop.Still its the farmers museum! The displays of equipment are very nice and the living history village along with the animals are fantastic. If you want or need to learn how something was done in the past its a great place for research and the historic interpreters are always eager to share what they know.
Had such a wonderful time w/ my children & grandchildren @ the March pancake breakfast Sunday, everything was delicious! The walk thru the village, carousel, & syrup&snow as a real treat! Highly recommend this event! My husband & I became members & we r actually thinking of going 1 more time, just the 2 of us, b4 the event is over!
The place provides a great history of the region and the locals dressed in historic garb were willing to spend time with us; describing where the buildings came from and about their owners. Very well maintained property. Unfortunately access to the interior of the various properties was limited due to covid precautions put in place.
🎠 The Carousel wad a fun experience for my Daughter AND her Gramma! We got to pet a large horse, saw a two-day-old baby lamb with its Mommy, some large gobbling turkeys, pigs, chickens and a rooster. Nice gift shop too. I would recommend kids be at least 2 years old to really enjoy the animals (my daughter is 1 1/2 and her favorite part was stomping in the the puddles 😄).Theres an educational aspect as well with an old-time blacksmith shop, doctors office, lawyers office, etc.Wear boots for the mud! 👢
Today we came for the Sugaring Off Sunday. The food was DELICIOUS, the horse-drawn wagon ride was fun, several buildings were open to explore and we had the tom Turkey gobbling! My kids had fun exploring the different ways of extracting and boiling sap into syrup. We even took a ride on the carousel! We will surely be back again!
The Farmers Museum is always a good time, and if you live anywhere near it, the annual membership is well worth getting. They have a very dedicated and knowledgable living history staff and tons of seasonal events. If you get the annual membership to the Farmers Museum, it also gets you into the Fenimore museum across the street.
This is a great museum to go to, especially when its as nice a day out as we had. There are knowledgeable people all throughout the grounds who can convey a real sense of place when theyre describing the way things used to be. There are tours and events all throughout the day to keep anyone interested. I would definitely recommend the Box & Cox play if you have the time to see it.The only negative part was the cafe. Its a very thrown together set up and I would recommend having lunch somewhere in town if youre planning on being there in the middle of the day.
The farmers museum is a neat place to visit, especially if you like learning about history! Theres a whole village to walk through, with historic buildings, and houses. They also have employees who are dressed in clothing that fits the time theyre portraying, and doing various things that people did back in the 19th century. Theyre great about giving neat information about what life was like, and the things people did back then! Its almost like youve actually gone back in time! Gotta check this place out!
Really cool seeing alot of the old ways to do things like at the blacksmith shop or the printing press. The place was exceptionally clean and well kept up. Also the prices were very very reasonable for how much time each person takes explaining things to you and answering questions
Definitely a good spot for young kids. Probably would be boring for older kids or adults on their own. The best value is if you combine this with a ticket to the Hall of Fame or the Fenimore Arts Museum (adults are $20 for one vs. $27 for two. Kids under 7 are free in both places). The staff was very nice, and the architecture was really beautiful. The local farmer had our kids chase the goats out of the pen and into the barn... would definitely recommend for young families.
What a great place. Very authentic and quaint. We went for a one act play and a farm to table dinner. The play was finny and entertaining. The food was okay but was not great nor did it seem to be from local farms. Looking forward to going back on another occasion to see more.
My family and I went for the Sugaring Off event where they make their own maple syrup and hold an all you can eat pancake breakfast. You can also go around to different buildings and see what it looked like to live in the 1800s. My kids had fun learning about the different things they did back in the old days. There was a couple of different things for kids to make and partake in. They do a demonstration on how syrup was made and is still made. The people who were running the carousal seemed really stressed out and kind of gave the parents an attitude when it came to their kids. They are older and it seems they need to retire from it and figure out where else they can work at the museum if that is what they want to do.
We were disappointed that nothing was happening at The Farmers Museum. It looked like it might rain as we paid our admission but were assured that activities would not be restricted. We had one ride on the Carousel and NOTHING ELSE to do. Every worker had left their post.

2022-07-01Quaint history museum focused on mid-1800s farming implements, tools, life style, and specialty trades of the time. Set as a small town with several well restored buildings each highlighting a specific trade. The blacksmith, printing, barns, farmhouse, and tavern were very well presented each with a staff person in period authentic costume answering questions and demonstrating their craft. The second floor of the main building has an extensive display of trade-specific old tools and farming equipment. This is a very worthwhile exhibit to see if youre a tool aficionado. There are some farm animals such as pigs, goats, sheep, cows, horses, chickens, and turkeys. Most are in fenced areas and some can be petted though the fence. Theres a restored carousel with a $1 per person charge to ride. A very nice nostalgic exhibit. Light food, soft drinks and snacks are available in a cafe building. Theres an admission to enter the main museum property. Kids will like the visit and it can be enjoyed in a few relaxed hours. When in the Cooperstown area this is a good place to visit with the family.

2022-06-09Fun for all ages! Great tourist location for kids to see, learn, and interact with farm animals and farm workers. We thoroughly enjoyed this museum and would definitely return when in the area again. I believe this museum can apparently be rented as a venue for weddings and held in the old church on site after operating hours as there was a wedding that was just beginning around their closing time of 5p on a Saturday.

2022-05-31What a wonderful stroll back in time. All of the buildings have been restored to their original state. The workers are all in authentic period clothing and very informative about their duties in this restoration. Everywhere that there are animals there is some form of hand sanitation. The grounds are meticulously groomed and everything is very clean.

2022-04-07Went to Cooperstown for work meetings all week. Decided to go to the Farmers Museum to support the local museum. The staff there was very nice and took the time to explain details about the way of life of years ago. I really enjoyed the explanation of the way they used to make garments and the blacksmith took time to explain about making the tools and other things they used to hand forge.

2021-10-10Very interesting and educational place. The people at each station were very nice and very knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this for families, kids or even by yourself like I did.
