The Gravity Vault in other cities:
This is a pretty nice gym to climb at when I’m home on LI and away from my home gym. I am going to take a star off because of the lack of autobelays- I wish there were a few more for climbers that come solo but don’t like bouldering. if I was coming to the gym with a partner I bet I’d really enjoy it, there are a wide variety of tope rope routes everywhere at all grades of difficulty!I do wish they would do more to debrief partygoers regarding safety in a climbing gym. they need to make it clear that there will be climbing happening even though they’re having a party, and make it clear to partygoers that they need to respect that. there was a birthday party this afternoon and multiple people were standing right below me when I was on the top of an autobelay route about to come down. I had to yell at these families and children from the top of the wall to get away from the autobelay. the staff took this seriously when I mentioned this to them, but I recommend they add rules about safety to their party bookings in the future. I left shortly after this event because I was so shaken up and I don’t feel that I got the full value of my day pass.
This has the potential to be a fantastic gym with its numerous ropes, extensive square footage of walls, large bouldering area, cracks, and additional training equipment. Unfortunately the setters create some very bizarre routes, and the grades are often plain wrong. Not to mention some routes stay up for 4+ months. Skilled, rational route setters could make this into a five star gym. Also, the climate control seems non-existent: it can feel at least 10 degrees warmer at the top of a route. Ill keep coming back, because itd be quite easy for management to make some positive changes and I hope one day they do.Edit: Maybe you can add a form somewhere where we can provide direct feedback on routes; of course there would need to be a way to uniquely identify each route. Regarding the fans, I totally agree they would help with the climate however they werent running the last few times I visited.
Absolutely awesome. Its massive and pretty friendly to beginners like myself but keep in mind that almost everything is hard to do and it takes a lot of energy. Its more about the process than finishing the routes and Im sure you get better with time. They have great deals on Monday and Friday.Great activity to do with larger groups.100% worth trying at the very least. I fell in love with it after the first time there and its gotten universally good reviews from my friends.
We bring our kids to first visit this gravity vault yesterday, The whole new 2017 opened long island Melville(I-495 exit 49), it’s very worthy of praise, convenient transportation, parking lot in front of door, although the environment is not super huge, but not many people, super clean, Staffs are nice, ambient light is bright, the price is about 20% less than NYC’s indoor climbing gym (day pass $21 / child $18).There are gym room, shower, slackline available on Wednesdays. Bouldering routes is interesting, rope routes about 5.8 ~ 5.13 evenly (feeling 5.10 the most), there are auto belay, top rope and lead, ropes are new, protection devices is included grigri2.Children / novice area has two zones, A area on the second floor about 7 to 8 rope / 13 ~ 14 routes, about 25 feet high, two lines with small angle overhung; B area in the first floor next to stair, about 7 rope / 10 route, a little higher about 30 feet, a lot of funny holds, animal / letter / balls / heart / star… # ×% $ ¥ ¢ * … etc.About the belay test, theoretically, you need to pass three times from three visits; lead belay test request to donate $5 to Access Fund (or AAC I forget), top rope belay test is free.
My daughter and I had an amazing time here. The staff was very friendly, and kept trying to keep my daughter going higher. While the room was a little warm for me, there was a great breeze at the top. 😉I would definitely recommend this for a quick day out if they have an opening.
High walls and few crowds (sometimes a lot of kids but they don’t climb where we climb usually) At times the bouldering seems to lack the ‘sophistication’ or creativity that brooklyn boulders has (but brooklyn boulders is world renowned and each gym has its own style). What do I know?(I am pretty new at climbing)- go see for yourself! There is a nice atmosphere and the staff is super upbeat and willing to learn and do more and improve all the time so any ideas you have can be put in a suggestion box...It’s worth a trip from the city if you were wondering.
The place absolutely rocks! (No pun)I had a gift certificate that had expired by a few months and I was unable to attend due to personal reasons. When I was able to climb and do activities again we called and they honored the gift certificate, now they have acquired a new lifetime member because I absolutely love the sport and the facility. The staff and members are extremely friendly, accommodating and very knowledgeable.Ive been climbing here for about 3 months and it feels more like three years due to the comfort level.Highly recommended!!!
This is our first time at this facility and our second time bouldering altogether. Four stars because the facility is clean, staff is extremely friendly, and prices were reasonable. However, for bouldering specifically we felt like the walls were limited and they were hard for beginners. We liked the challenge, but at the same time, the level of difficulty just seemed a bit too high for beginners.
Very fun and positive experience. Justin was our instructor, he was very patient and friendly. Id never climbed before, but I had a wonderful time. Very clean establishment, bathrooms/locker room especially. The snacks offered were reasonably priced and, to my personal delight, quite vegan friendly. The staff all seem happy as well. Glad I ended up here for my first time climbing.
My children 7 and 8 years old went for the first time during the winter break. There was no wait, and started climbing right away. Started to get a little busy but they still had plenty to room to climb. The staff was kind and patient with the little ones. I liked that. Great place for kids and adults. We will definitely be back. The price was great we paid $12 each for a day pass.. Wednesdays deal.. got lucky, loved it. I absolutely recommend
Had my daughterss birthday party here. It was awesome. The place is very clean and the staff is friendly. Ariel and Casie were excellent with our climbers. They were so encouraging and helpful. Adam, the manager, came over and checked in on us numerous times. The girls had a wonderful time. Stress free party. Very affordable and highly recommended.
I really love this gym, the routes and the staff however I am giving a rating of 3 stars. When I first started going to this gym they always played a wide selection of music. Every song would be a different genre which I thought was great. Two of the experiences Ive had there recently have not been like this. I went on a Monday and for over 2 hours the only music played was Korean Pop Music. I chose not to say anything because I figured maybe this would be a one time occurrence. Yesterday I went to the gym and for 2 hours they were playing very anxiety inducing drum and bass music. 2 HOURA. After about an hour and half my friend went up to the desk and explained she was having a hard time focusing on climbing and felt very anxious. It was very intense music. She was told they dont take song requests and she said no im just requesting you change the music. It fell upon deaf ears. About a half hour goes by and I can feel myself getting like angry for no reason and frustrated really easily, the music was driving me insane. If you like drum and bass I guess it would be a good day for you but it is not a popular music genre at all. Look it up and listen and think about if you want to climb for 2 plus hours listening to what sounds like a song that never ends. I approach the front desk myself asking if the same song is playing because I think Im going insane. I am told oh its just the genre of music and I expressed that it was making me feel real anxious. It fell upon deaf ears again as the music was not changed for at least another 45 minutes. During that period multiple staff numbers from the front desk were very visibly pointing at my friends and I. I usually feel super welcome here but this experience left me with a bad taste In my mouth. Anxiety is a very real and intense thing to experience and to have that be disregarded like that did not make me welcome or valued as a customer/climber. I can understand if you want to throw a few drum and bass songs in the mix .. but over 2 hours with no breaks .. give ME a break!!
I really like all the routes the vault offers. Staff is nice and friendly and the facility itself is large, spacious, and impressive. My one gripe is that its super corporate. Everything from the waiver you have to sign every time you check in, to the red, white, blue, and black color scheme on every wall. If you can get past that though, its a great place to practice climbing.
This place was awesome! There were a plethora of different ways to challenge my climbing skills. I went with my girlfriend and my two friends and we both had fun. The staff there was also great! They were there to answer any questions that we had and help us out. I would highly recommend Gravity to anybody who loves to climb, and have a good time!
Everyone here is very friendly, knowledgeable, and just amazing. We are planning a birthday party and wanted something unique and high energy, and this is perfect. We worked with Evan and Liam. They were both patient and very responsive to our needs and questions. Liam went above and beyond to help ease our concerns. The pricing is reasonable and the space is great. The people who work here are just phenomenal!!!!
I used to be a member of this gym (moved away now) the staff are super friendly, the routes are cycled fairly quickly, plenty of lead climbing and bouldering including a relatively new floating boulder. Their new exercise equipment is great and includes pull-up bars, a dip station, and some other body weight oriented equipment. They also have a small weight room with dumbbells, a multi-use cable machine, and exercise balls etc. Overall a great community of people.
Great climbing gym but they have traditional bole style ropes which means you have to be paired with an instructor. Other climbing gyms out west have auto bole systems. Most walls not built for kids. Easy to get hurt on the bouldering section for kids under 10. Tons of walls but under staffed so you have to make reservations.
This was so much fun! The staff was very supportive and knew what they were doing, so my friend and I felt confident and safe enough to do it. They also offer certification classes so that you can handle to ropes and stuff on your own. I didnt get to do them, but I definitely think thats an awesome attribute! On top of that, they offer a discount for college students and fairly cheap group prices so you can get a bunch of your friends and go.
We visited the Gravity vault today, our family of 4 had a great time. We have 2 children, girl 15, boy 9. We called ahead (I strongly recommend this if it is your first time as you need a staff belayed climb). All 4 of us had a great time. Our staff belayer was Sammi. She was awesome - extremely experienced, helpful and supportive not to mention fun to hang with. I am so glad we made the trip here for the spring break. I know we will be back. This is a great place to learn rock climbing, challenge yourself and conquer any fears you may have of heights. The staff was super friendly, well managed the facility was extremely clean and even on spring break.
This place is tons of fun and aggravation haha. Its fun in that your mind has to workout the puzzle of where to put your feet and hands next and aggravating because it indeed takes skill.Very cleanFriendly staffBathroom clean as well4 stars because no one gives you an intro or quick summary of what or how best to climb. You just get giving your shoes and go for it.Definitely be back now that we know what to expectExpect to be extremely sore and have a ridiculous forearm pump!
We went to the gravity vault for the first time today. It was a great experience. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable and answered any questions we asked of them. 2 if the kids had rock climbed before and 2 had not. They explained everything and were very encouraging. I would definitely go back again!!
Took my date here and had the greatest experience. Kyle gave us a private class and even stayed after his shift was over, just so we’d be certified to belay and do other climbs besides just bouldering. Can’t say enough about the kid. He really went the extra mile for us and was an awesome instructor. Had the knots down pat in no time! Thanks again, Kyle!
The new Gravity Vault that opened in Melville, NY is such a great addition to making life on Long Island better. It is easily accessible off the 495, the parking lot is in great condition with plenty of parking, and the building is large, spacious, comfortable, bright, and clean! So far attendance has been primarily members and regular climbers and I do hope it will continue to grow its membership/climbing community over birthday parties. So far we have only lead climbed and top-roped and the routes were very enjoyable, interesting, technical, with a lot of variety. We will be trying out the boulder routes in the coming week. The bouldering area is separate from lead and top-rope which makes for a much more relaxed and spacious climbing environment all around. Soon they will be offering yoga classes and have a training room too! Maybe one day one of those birthday party rooms will even be converted to a climbers lounge/hang out area….here’s for hoping!Great job Gravity Vault! We are happy to have you here ;)
Whether you are looking for a place to learn or to improve this gym has it all. To start, you are always greeted on the way in by very friendly staff who can answer any question you have. To the meat of it, there are countless routes to climb on which are changed often enough that getting bored is impossible. The facility is bright, clean and airy. Even their prices on gear are reasonable. Highly recommended.
Such an awesome place to climb. They offer classes, special pricing options, and have a storefront where you can buy your climbing essentials. They also offer rental equipment. The best part about this place is the community of climbers that meet here and interact. 5 star establishment for sure.
The facility is awesome, they keep raising the bar every week. The setters keep developing and are open minded to suggestions. They have recreated several of my favorite climbs from Bishop and Yosemite valley for me when asked. The staff are rock stars, who are exstemely helpful. I can’t forget to mention the yoga classes iare fun and challenging. If your going to pick up a new sport to get into or if you love to climb I would highly recommend this gym. Waiting for them to build a cave, hint, hint!!!
My 6 year old sons first experience was terrible. A staff member recommended the playground area without a harness and suggested I spot him. We were briefly informed if we wanted a harness we would have to make a reservation and only a 4 pm was available. My son was unable to climb any part and was not confident without a harness. After less than ten minutes I left with a very upset boy.
Honestly, I have tried this gym numerous times. Time and time again I pray I have a better experience. Sadly, I don’t. The crew are nice. Its mainly the climbing I have a problem with. I think it has some of the worst routesetting I have seen. Now; before I continue, I have never tried Lead or Top Rope there. I am a boulderer. The boulders sometimes do not have grades on them, which in hinde sight isnt a huge problem for me, more so, I just want to track my progress. There setting is unbearable to me. It takes a portion of a week to set a small part of their bouldering wall with staff and in my opinion takes way to long for the set we do eventually get. When I want to come down I think I would rather prefer falling face down onto the floor because their mats might as well be concrete. I do not feel comfortable falling at any point, which makes me not try certain climbs with the way they are set. The set themselves make me contort my body in ways I probably should not, along with the climb feeling as if every move is desperate and has little to know flow. Now why do I still climb here even though I wrote harsh review? i come from the city to climb because it is the only indoor gym within NY that is currently open during the pandemic. I dont write this to be mean, but more critical. I will set for you guys for free.
There is no workout gym. The routes are not that good. The gym is also pricey. However I was most pleased with one of the employees named John. He was extremely professional, helpful and polite. He give a great over view of the gym. Additionally he did an excellent job of giving me my belay test.
This was so much fun!! Its extremely difficult. The staff is friendly, but they dont provide much instruction. We did the 60 minutes w a staff member, bec weve never done this before. I would love to go again, now that a climber friend of mine gave me tips on how to do it without exhausting myself (read: use ur abs).
Nice place with a lot of parking. If youre going just for bouldering, youll go through the courses pretty quick. They just dont have as much bouldering space as other places Ive been to. Youll also have to move the extra mats yourself under the bouldering areas, which can be interesting.
We love this place - my son (age 11.5) has been climbing here for a little over a year - the super-supportive staff and great facility have helped him fall in love with the sport of climbing and helped him grow and improve continuously. Even his decrepit, middle-aged old man (thats me) has taken up this challenging and rewarding sport, with lots of support from the staff there. I cant recommend GV Melville highly enough!
My 8 year old son has just started taking climbing classes at The Gravity Vault in Melville and I couldnt be happier with his experience there. The facility is bright and clean and the staff is great. LIAM, IN PARTICULAR, IS FABULOUS! Hes got a wonderful way with children. Not only was he able to put my son at ease during his first class, but hes played an integral part in my sons developing love for rock wall climbing. As a mom, all I want is for my kids to be happy - my son is so excited about going to The Gravity Vault every week that he routinely wakes up in the middle of the night asking how many more days until he can climb again! THANKS LIAM and thanks Gravity Vault!!
The climbing was good, the poor review is for the customer service. Having to cancel 30 days before the next months subscription, or else it will go through anyways is seedy, and would be frustrating for anyone going through a financial bind. They’ve been giving me trouble about freezing my account due to personal injury, as if I’d lie about a car accident. I had intended to return once my now fractured thumb was healed, however it’s now unlikely.
We signed up for a 2 hour camp today which was a complete waste of money. After getting set up the group of 8 kids did a few climbs and then sat in a conference room, ate snacks (Not provided) and played hangman. Due to a miscommunication, the instructors thought the camp was going for another hour but instead were told that the camp was done and NO more climbing. The manager just kept making excuses and never apologized for the mistake. She did not even offer to let the kids stay to climb more or even a voucher to come back. POOR CUSTOMER service!!! Well, we are NEVER going back. For a fairly new business, why not make the customer happy. The place is clean but not run well.
Started coming to this gym July 2017. I have been to Brooklyn Boulders and Island Rock as well. The routes at this GV location keep getting better every month, and its a relaxing atmosphere with a friendly staff and good community. Its my go to gym for when Im done with work and want to tackle problems on the wall.
As a parent I love seeing my child enjoy classes with Justin. He makes kids program fun, engaging and leads by example. He changes it up using hoops, ball and other equipment. Previous instructor was literally just standing there belaying looking so bored. I wish other staff would teach the way Justin teaches because I would not continue this unless he was the teacher! At around $35 a class for an hour with 3-4 other kids, I wish it was cheaper like $20 or bring back the groupon deal!
Awesome 4 Adults & KidsMy son has been training to be a Corrections Officer & graduating the Academy in 2018. He has been solidly Kickboxing 6days week- sometimes double classes- since 4/2017 & has lost 40+lbs..I had the chance to visit and checkout GV and will happily give my son some free classes for his 33rd Bday this April. I know he will enjoy the challenge of mastering a new skill . Cant wait to surprise him! They offer classes, special pricing options and a store where you can purchase or rent your climbing essentials. There is a great interaction within the climber community that supports GV and wish I had opportunity to scale the walls & boulders when I cross trained. If you are up for varying challenges every month- this place is for you!!
Gravity Vault has outdone itself with this location. 40 ft walls make me dizzy looking up while belaying. Staff are great. Only issue is, as a new gym with Rock Candy Holds, the holds are like sand paper - really rough on the hands. This gets better over time and wont be an issue 6 months from now.

2022-01-17This was our first time climbing and it was such a great experience. John was GREAT!!!! I felt safe with him belaying for us and he helped us build up the confidence to do some more difficult climbs. It’s a really nice/clean gym and the staff members were so nice, they genuinely care about helping everyone and making sure they’re having fun. John and Sal were amazing, we’ll definitely be coming back, thanks everyone!

2021-08-29I truly love this place. Been going here for years. Lots of room to climb for everyone since there are so many walls. You can lead climb, top rope or boulder. I personally exclusively boulder nowadays, but have done top rope in the past. The routes are well set and the people at the front desk are quick and helpful.

2022-02-25Love this place. Went today for the second time. First time I brought a group of teens from my job. They had never climbed before and the staff was very patient and helpful. Today I brought my 7 year old son. He was hesitant at first but his instructor (TJ) was awesome! He encouraged him and by the end of the hour he was confident and excited to come back. Looking forward to returning.

2022-02-12Had such a great time here. I did the Friday night belay certification course, then climbed until close. My instructor Josh was great, and the gym has a great selection of routes. I was there by myself, so I had to stick to the auto-belays and bouldering; I cant wait to go back with someone and try some of the other routes.
