The Helm in other cities:
Small hole in the wall that you’d miss if you weren’t looking for it. Walked in to a warm atmosphere with friendly staff. The entire restaurant was packed so we had a short wait. Seating was comfortable and had a nice view of the lake. Food order was taken promptly and served quickly and correctly. Everything we ordered was delicious and so plentiful that we both took home doggie bags. Will definitely be back!!! The menu is locally sourced and changes daily-weekly.
Went there based on the recommendation of some Orange County, NY folks and it did not disappoint. We didnt think wed have to be there right at 11:00 for Sunday brunch, but we were wrong as there was already a line out the door of people trying to get in. Tables were pretty much filled up but we had seats at the bar which was OK for the two of us, so we didnt wind up waiting very along to sit. Exceptional selection of beer on tap including Aslin, Interboro, Weldwerks, and Sloop. For food, I had the Lobster Benedict and my girlfriend had the Smokehouse Benedict. Great taste and presentation on both, and came out surprisingly quick. The owner, Mark, was behind the bar and was super nice, engaging, and attentive. He definitely gave off owner vibes before we confirmed it was in fact, his joint. He advised us when we got there to try and get our order in because there was a couple of large parties that were just about to get their orders taken. We really appreciated that. All in all, a great experience and a place I would definitely hit up again if were in the Greenwood Lake area. Would love to try some more of those beers and sample a few more things from the menu
Stopped by on Saturday eve. I can say The Helm has a nice view of the lake and the ambiance inside was kind of welcoming.. However the food was plain and flavorless. We order the Panzanella appetizer, dressing was plainly said out of a bottle. Chicken wings, Parmesan were flavorless , and definitely not Parmesan included .. (some other cheese) Buffalo burger was ok , with iced cold sliced potatoes. Waiter was friendly and prompt .. Not a place I would come back anytime soon.
Hands down one of the greatest Diamond in the Ruff finds in the Tri-State area. We came up from Sussex NJ after hearing about this Narnia like environment, with a phenomenal beer selection and cuisine that one would expect to find throughout Manhattans hot spots. That said, this place has exceeded all expectations and has become our new go-to favorite. Hats off to The Helm, its executive chef, staff, and wonderful patrons!🖖🏼🇺🇸
I went to The Helm for the first time based on reviews and personal recommendations expecting a great meal, instead I walked away disappointed. The drinks were OK, we ordered chicken wing appetizers, they were burnt, dry and tasteless despite the garlic and Parmesan cheese on top. The $30 cheesesteak was small (6 in sub), Ingredients listed on the menu for the cheesesteak sandwich were not in the sandwich, no onions and no peppers. It was tasteless. The steak was tender and tasteless. The accompaniment of burnt chips tasted like they were fried in old oil. I ordered the fish and chips, the fish was tasteless and the batter was too thick and bready, overwhelming the fish. The french fries were the same, tasted like they were cooked in old oil and burnt. The waiter never came to the table to find out if we wanted some more drinks or how the food taste it. Will not be going back. luckily those wings were taken off the bill.
The food is really good, cant argue with that. Except for the last time I was there my chicken sandwich was undercooked. They took it back and apologized. Unfortunately I have given this place too many chances. The service is hit or miss, but mostly miss. More than once I have waited over an hour for my food because the servers forgot to put the order in. On more than one occasion the servers were more pre-occupied with taking shots at the bar and blasting the music so loudly you couldnt hear the person next to you. The staff are extremely young and unprofessional treating the restaurant more like their personal hang out than a business. I kept coming back for the food but this last time was the last straw with raw undercooked chicken and after I again waited an hour for my food. Im over this place.
I kept hearing nothing but good things about The Helm. I finally got a chance to go and it certainly doesnt disappoint. All the food was top notch. They definitely pay attention to quality here. Their beer list is local and large. Something for everybody. The daily specials are fun and creative. The food is hearty and very flavorful. Its a quintessential American tavern-type restaurant. Guaranteed to leave full and happy :)
Best spot to fill up your tummy after getting in a good kayak workout at the nearby Green Wood Lake. This place has both indoor and outdoor seating. Brace yourself for atleast a 15 min wait because this place is busy. The food was amazing - very well presented (in spite of the plastic dinnerware thanks to Covid) and yummy. Above all, the customer service was excellent. Smiling faces all around will make anyone feel very welcome.
Sports bar tavern, relaxed feel and very nice owners. Great place and great ambiance. Not cheap, spent over $240 for 5 of us. Highly recommended. The brie was amazing. Chicken wings were meh. My wife got the salmon salad, I got the Atlantic sandwich. Bloody Mary is like a meal with pork belly, a chicken wing and more! Very kid friendly. While we were there another group had an accident where on of the kids broke a window. Poor family was mortified. Owner came over, told them not to worry, everything was back to normal. That’s 5 star behavior in my book. Parking is tight so leave your gas guzzling beast at home. Take your wife’s car.
The food was great. Very large portions service needed management. Entres were served before appetizers were even half done. The glasses and cutlery were cloudy with water spots, I hope. All in all a great culinary experience. I cant wait to try the rest of the menu. Frankie
Coming back to the Helm was wonderful today , first our adorable server was delightful and informative on the special board . Well the pork belly banh mi sandwich was to die for ! Perfect blend of hear ,crunch abd the pork belly marinade pulled it all together ! Thank you for being such a wonderful restaurant ! Next week can’t wait to come back
Really solid spot for beer and for food. They have some very good craft beers including brand new local beers. I was impressed. Because I was so focused on the beer, I kind of forgot about the food, so when it arrived at the table I was very psyched because it was really good.
Went there for Sunday brunch and they had amazing food. It was a BBQ breakfast platter called The Mayday. A lot of food but so tasty. As for the looks of the place, its not much to look at on the outside but the inside is a completely different story. Very nice and has a great view of the lake.
Outstanding food and service. What appears to be a more pub like atmosphere, really delivered the goods with regard to flavorful dishes, along with a solid wine and draft beer selection. The young ladies serving the tables were super pleasant and very attentive. Dont sleep on this place and get there early, as the small parking lot fills quickly.
Hands down one of the best Bloody Marys Ive ever had. It was my meal. It included thick cuts of pork belly, a chicken wing, pepperoni, and cheese curds among some other BM staples. Fun atmosphere right on the lake. The food was served in very large portions and my table left very happy and full!
Everything about the Helm was a very pleasant surprise. The service is friendly and welcoming. The drink selection is large, but inviting. The food is probably the biggest surprise. The Helm easily stands above your typical bar food. The presentation is impressive, and the varied options are a fun departure from the expected.Vegetarians must try the Masala burger.
Theres only 2 negative things I can say about this place. The parking lot and size of the restaurant are too small. Everything else about this place was fantastic. Im convinced its the best Cuban sandwich Ive ever had and the tap list was amazing. It has nice views of the lake and a comfortable laid back atmosphere with food that was really well presented and tasty. Im really intrigued to try the brunch, but I dont think it could get much better than the dinner.
Came with a party of twelve for our fellow teachers retirement. Started with appetizers that were amazing. The cheeseboards and wings were delicious. The entrees were huge and very tasty. Dessert featured a tray of cookies and cakes. The staff was phenomenal! It was my first time here and its already one of my favorite places! Oh by the way, theres also the beautiful Greenwood Lake in front of you while youre enjoying your fantastic food!
We stopped at the Helm for a big dinner after a day of apple picking nearby and we were not disappointed. Each persons dish could have been family style for the size. While I was able to clean my plate, everyone else had plenty to take home and save for another day.If youre worried that means this is a quantity over quality joint, dont. I had delicious fish and chips while several of my companions had perfectly rare, melt in your mouth steak. For the vegetarians in the crowd, a bowl of al dente pasta or a colorful veggie burger would definitely sate your appetite. On top of that the staff was friendly and attentive, the drinks good, and the prices very affordable compared to our city sensibilities. Next time Im in the area, Ill be dropping by.P.S. on your way out or in, dont forget to take a gander at the Brown Pearl the restaurants pirate ship moored just across the street.
I usually love this place. Have been several times before and was really excited for the 4hr drive from MA-NY to come back for some unique, authentic food. Unfortunately the menu has been cut drastically. Only 3 entree items, everything else was just apps, burgers and salads. On top of the short list of choices the prices were drastically raised. It was really disappointing. Hoping the menu will be revamped, so that we can enjoy this place again, with the great fabulous entrees, and not just pup food.
Great food, great vibe and great beers. The place is a little small for the amount of clientele so be prepared to wait on a Friday or Saturday night. But dont fret order a drink and an app, talk to your date and some locals and relax. Picture of ridiculous Bloody Mary.
After hearing all the good things from our friends we finally made it to The Helm. It was around 830pm on a week day, they were slowly winding down. It was all good vibes and the food was delicious. We’ll certainly be back. As a jewel of a restaurant in our community, I feel obliged to also talk about what could have been a bit better about our visit, as constructive feed back. We wanted to sit outside, outside was full when we arrived so we sat inside with the promise of moving outside when a table became available. After ordering our drinks we saw a table open and came out, the hostess said yes come right out, and as we were doing so some other person stopped us and said at that time they were no longer serving food outside at that time. We said okay no problem and went back to our seats inside. 20 minutes or so passed and still no trace of that glass of wine and the margarita we ordered. Finally someone just brought the margarita. Still no wine. Another 5 minutes still no wine, I had to signal our server, to remind him, he said “I got you man...” and walked outside. Finally the wine arrived. We were all good, waiting for our food, and our appetizer arrives. We figured in a few minutes the shared main dish will also arrive, but after a good 10-15 minutes, I thought may be the main was also forgotten and knowing the kitchen is closing soon, I tried to find our server, he was not around that moment, someone else came by and we kindly asked her to please check on the main dish. In a few minutes our server came with the dish and lectured us on how appetizers and main dishes work. We were too hungry to be bothered with it, so instead of telling him “well you never asked us if we wanted them together or separately...” we just dove into that awesome fish and chips. As mentioned above, we’ll certainly return, may be it was just one of those days, but still felt the urge to mention this experience.
My only issue with the Helm is that the wait is so long on Friday and Saturday nights because everyone else knows how good the Helm is. The food is a little pricey, but it is delicious and on par with any craft American restaurant in NYC. The service is friendly. Last time I got the steak salad, which was so memorable and delicious- Ill definitely be back.
Amazing scenic place to grab bruch, lunch or breakfast!!The outdoor seating is so fun..the view to the lake and all the activities happening in there makes ur meal eating a delight. The service was fast, quick and wuite good. Waffle chicken, fish n chips and the atlantic really yummy. They dont take reservation,so try it out. We were 8 of us and we got a table..we drove 30mins to get there..totally worth it. The black mural on the building add the punk. What a great place to visit!!!!
The Helm is an excellent place to go to eat phenomenal food in a great atmosphere! Eating at the Helm is like eating at home with your family! The staff is excellent and they treat you like members of their own family! 5 stars is not a good enough review...I’d give it 10+ stars!Great food, great atmosphere, great staff!
The helm has great food and great staff with a view of the lake--what more could you want?? We sat outside bc with the pandemic we r still not comfortable with indoor dining. The staff is really good about taking the face mask requirement seriously--even when hustling outside--and the tables are spread pretty far apart so you really feel safe. A great place to go when you are at the lake--pandemic or not!
My first visit. I had a light lunch of a wedge salad and the chefs charcuterie/cheese board. It was a hard choice. All of the menu showed imagination. My choice was attractively presented and delicious. The salad was based on Bibb lettuce, not the usual iceberg, with chunks of pork belly amd slices of orange and blood orange. The board was enormous, piled with camembert, sausage, ham, two other nice cheeses, grapes and chewy fresh bread. And ample - I took home probably two-thirds and had it for dinner. The staff was friendly and attentive. This is not a cheap place. But you get what you pay for. I have owned several good restaurants. None could have produced the quality of todays lunch so quickly.
The craft beer selection is awesome and the food is great too - a spin on the usual favorites. The onion rings and the chicken & waffles are great. Intriguing daily specials as well. However, the reason I only gave 4-stars is... the service is always very slow (at the table and at the bar) so keep in mind ahead of your visit.
We arrived midday on a Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. The restaurant is small and all the tables were full. I expected to be met by agitated staff when I requested a table for 9 adults and 2 children without any advance notice. They quickly accommodated us. We were sitting within 5 minutes of arriving. The staff was courteous and attentive. Every dish was delicious. We ordered several appetizers and entrees. The portions are generous and prices are fair. Not one of us was disappointed. We are already planning our next visit.
I was there for brunch. The brunch menu is wonderful. I should have walked out when we were informed they had no coffee. But I stayed. The ice water was yellow and they had no bottled alternatives. The food took almost an hour to come out. While we waited a group of 4 flies decided to buzz around our table making the hour wait for food almost intolerable. By the time the food came out I was annoyed, thirsty and no longer hungry. The wait staff was very nice and professional.
First time there. Went with another couple who had been many times before. My H and I only had burgers but they were huge and very good. All staff was very friendly. Service was excellent. If you can get past the parking hassle, its well worth it. To be fair, they were busy as it was a very nice Sunday and EVERYONE seemed to be out that day.
The Helm is just one of those feel good spots you can’t wait to return too. Weather it be Friday night, or Sunday am the Helm always has you covered with banging food, amazing drinks, and better people ! Marky and the team go above and beyond to make sure each individual experience is top notch. Best spot on Greenwood lake hands down. Go get a bloody helm you won’t regret it !!!
Very nice restaurant bar. Almost everything we ordered was very good to exceptional. The salmon and burger were very good, tasted fresh and prepared to order. Smocked wings were also very good. The smocked brisket sandwich was excellent. Juicy, smoky served on brioche bun with fresh coleslaw. It was stuffed with allot of brisket very big plate of food for the price. The only thing we did not like were onion rings. Rings were over fried to the point of not edible. They do not take reservations. The places is always packed. So come early or be prepared for waiting Oh and one more thing the fresh cut fries was also excellent.
Love this place, always great food. Went today for the first time since Covid and it was good. The waiters were great and very attentive. The food was mostly great with the exception of the very well done burgers. I had the Cubano sandwich which was as excellent and we also shared wings and the poutine fries which were both delicious. Definitely will be going back and highly recommend this restaurant, the best in Greenwood Lake area!
The Helm has always and still never fails at providing the best of the food and the craft beer game. We went back yesterday after their re-opening (yes they’re back! As of 3/17/21) and slammed food and beers with the same familiar faces who always brought us back in the first place. Attention to detail is key here with their dishes and beer/cider/cocktail selections. Glad they’re back and you should be too! #takethehelm
I had such high hopes for this place. It had an excellent reputation so I decided to try it. The food itself is good. But the service is exceptionally bad. A world class kind of bad, it should have an award for that. Waiters were drunk, openly swigging liquor between going to tables. It was impossible to get a hold of anyone for an order, and food took almost an hour to come out and it was cold. No one ever checked in or apologized for the terrible atmosphere or service. While the food is pretty good, it’s definitely not good enough to justify sitting there trying to eat it.
Ive been here a few times and its turning into one of my favorites. The food portions are huge and the food is phenomenal. The chef is consistently switching things up, which gives you plenty to pick from. They also have great specialty cocktails and the wait staff is nice. Definitely recommend.
My son and I recently had Sunday brunch at The Helm. We ate outside which was right next to a fairly busy road (even on a late Sunday morning). The food was average, although my son (26 years old) enjoyed his dish, The Linda....smoked salmon, egg avocado on brioche.I ordered the pastrami hash which was average at best (the over cooked egg on top of the plate was cold when our food finally arrived after nearly 40 minutes....and we some of the first patrons when the restaurant opened at 11.00).Fortunately the chance to spend time and have a meal with our son negated the average food, the proximity to the road and what appeared to be an all male wait staff that seemed a bit confused (maybe they were hungover...LOL).
One of the best restaurants in the area. Huge portions, unique flavors, and fresh ingredients with almost everything made on premises. Place is small and gets crowded but the food is well worth it. Good rotating beer selection too and the specials are always fantastic.
This is the best restaurant on the lake. First time visitors should definitely get the chicken and waffles. Chef Jenn never disappoints with her specials. I dont drink but they make some interesting cocktails, really innovative drinks that Mark masterminds. Check it out. I know you wont be disappointed or hungry.
Amazing staff, amazing food. They dont sacrifice quality for anything. The service is a little relaxed, but thats whats kind of nice about it. Its like being at a friends house, rather than a restaurant. The cocktails are very good, they have a fantastic selection. Its the closest youll get to the ambiance and quality of a metropolitian restaurant. Go for brunch and then go back over and over again.
I’ve known about the place for a while however I haven’t had the opportunity to get there until recently. We arrived on a busy Saturday afternoon and the rather small parking lot was packed. Since I really want to try that place out we decided to wait a bit for a spot.Once inside I can see that the place is rather small. A massive bar takes up most of the space, and there are about maybe 10 or 12 tables at the most. We did have to wait for a table, which was not a problem although, there really isn’t much of a waiting area. The menu has a nice selection of sandwiches and platters, and as I understand is farm to table when available. It’s a quite a while for our meal to come out, which was fine with me I don’t like being rushed. I’m not sure if it was because how busy it was that day or if they just take their time and preparation. We ordered the poutine for an appetizer, I wasn’t quite sure what it was, as it turned out it’s fries with gravy and cheese curd. At $15 I don’t think I’d order it again although it did also give me three additional side dishes at home. I ordered a steak salad which was actually enough for three meals. My husband ordered a Cuban sandwich, which was “the best he ever had” We both ordered a specialty drink each and a pint each of beer. The total came to over $100 however, it was a special occasion.Oh no the food was great, the service was great and I definitely go back again.
The helm is the place to be! The staff is always bright eyed and welcoming:) The food is spectacular. My mouth waters just watching the waiters and waitresses carrying dishes out to customers! The bartenders are extremely charming and the drinks are always delicious! I come here with my friends often and always have an enjoyable experience. And we’ll be coming back over and over again!
Nice, quaint little place. It was 17° out and the heat wasnt working correctly so it was a little cold inside. I ordered a medium-rare burger which was served well done and ruined it for me but swapped it with a family member who had the country Cuban and I must say that was delicious! Fries could be cooked a little longer as they were not crunchy but Im willing to give them another try when Im back in town
I read all reviews and did not see any complaints about 3%+ convenience fee -I assume for using a credit card. We did not notice this until we left. It would be nice if the waiter informed the customer of the fee before they ran the card. Otherwise, the food was decent with an excellent view of the Lake. Try the fondue, its very good.
Food is worth the wait. Went on a Saturday at 6pm - be prepared to wait an hour. Its a cozy spot, so it gets crowded. But its sooo worth the wait. My boyfriend and I ordered beer and waited on the side of the bar. Once we were seated, the service was very quick. We ordered the Poutine right away and it came out fast and was so good. I ordered the chicken and waffles which was perfectly portioned, crispy and a wonderful combo of sweet and savory. My boyfriend ordered the hanger steak and it was so tender and flavorful. Chef Jenn is a genius.
Very unique menu with lots of great drink and craft beer options! The owners are super friendly and hard working people as well as their employees. They truly care about their guests and providing each patron with quality service and quality food and beverage. Always something nee on the specials board so give it a try! You will not be disappointed.
This place was truly awful. We arrived 45 min after they opened for brunch and they said the wait would be at least 45 minutes because no one had even gotten their food yet. That should have been a red flag. We sat at the bar and waited 45 to an hour for the food to come. The menu descriptions did not accurately portray what we received and the food was mediocre at best. I think the hype is about the novelty of the food and not quality. I am a lover of brunch this was such a disappointment and waste of money as everything was absurdly overpriced.
Amazing beer selection, always rotating in more beer. Outstanding smoked wings with a bunch of different sauces, as well as a special with bleu cheese and pickled onions which was excellent. The building itself is a little cozy but always filled with people having a good time drinking craft beer and some of the helms original cocktails. 10/10 will visit again.
Hands down best place for brunch Ive ever been. Lunch menu was great brunch menu was great. Portion sizes are huge. Staff is excellent. Food tasted perfect. I drove from three and a half hours away and somebody turned me on to this place and I would gladly make the trip back here to have their food and experience again. Rob from Massachusetts
Always an excellent time. Plenty of beer options to choose from. Dont go expecting to drink bud light or other common beers, you pick from many different types of smaller breweries around the country. The food is always amazing and the specials are unique and delicious. The bartenders are very friendly and the owner, Mark, is one of the nicest guys. I have recommended this place to many people and I stand by my word. 11/10 recommend.
Awesome meat oriented gastro pub. Always about 15 taps of unusual and often outstanding beers, plus tons of bottles and great cocktails. The food is mostly fantastic, but probably not so healthy to eat all the time. Very friendly, energetic and always crowded. Come early if you want a table.
I enjoyed the food and atmosphere here. It is also worth mentioning the all Male eye candy working as waiters and bar tenders while we could glimpse women hard at work in the kitchen. It was a real role reversal and I loved it. Portion size was large and well priced.
This restaurant is the one I like best. I go to many restaurants but to this restaurant I go the most. The crew is very receptive and the cuisine they place on your table is so appetizing. I never decline to have a good meal in this place. I highly recommend this place.
Cant speak on the food because the hostess kept changing the wait time. First it was 30-45 min, 3 minutes later, it was over an hour with no explanation. We still left a phone number with them but they never called to tell us a table was ready. Also overheard the hostess tell a co-worker that she kicked them out and told them there were no tables available when we asked about wait times for a table. If you arent white, you arent welcome here. Would give zero stars if possible.
Went to have an early Christmas dinner with another couple Dec.21st. Decided to try The Helm which we were told by other friends was a good place, good food. The Helm doesn’t take reservation so we went early -6pm. Stormy night, heavy rains. The place was packed, noise level high. Diners were enjoying themselves. We arrived before our friends and the hostess was told we were just waiting for our friends. She went and started to clear a table for four. She wouldn’t seat us until our friends arrived. At 6:05 our friends were not there - another group of 4 came in and was given what was to be our table. At 6:06 our friends arrived - they had been trying to park in the lot. We We’re then told that the wait for a table was 30-45 minutes.Great policy - deserves a ZERO star. We won’t try The Helm again.
Best restaurant and bar in the area with a welcoming atmosphere. Had our daughters wedding reception at The Helm and everything was perfect, top notch food, specialty beers, and great service. Well go again when we visit New Jersey. Owners are great people! Try The Helm, you will not be disappointed.
Best brunch ever! What an amazing bar and brunch spot. I loved the nautical theme right off the bat. Then the large window overlooking the water was another bonus.Came here with the boys after a morning bachelor range shooting and we ordered basically everything. Out of everything, nothing was bad.Chicken wings deliciously smoked!Onion rings more like Saturns rings!(Truffle) Poutine, better then Canada’s!What came first (chicken and waffles with a chorizo patty). Juicy chicken and not overly greasy coupled with a really really good moist waffle. Easily one of the best chicken and waffles I ever had.My table also had the fish and chips, lox board and one humongous banana foster pancake. No one complained about anything. But the banana foster pancake though, we were full to the brim and we managed to finished it all. Also great selection of beer, had to get a pumpkin beer with the cinnamon sugar rim. Did not regret anything.
By far the best beer selection and food on the lake. Unassuming store front but obviously not a secret... always packed! The noise level makes you feel like you’re eating in an airplane hanger (I would prefer it just little quieter so didn’t have to yell to be heard) but if you don’t mind screaming to talk and you want amazing craft beer and NYC-type food then this is the spot. Wish it was open all week!
Really great food selection. Food is fresh and from the farm. .They smoke all their own Meats and they have a signature hot sauce called the helm sauce. Great selections of beers and you have to try them Bloody Mary. , I am obsessed with the wake-up poutine and the Banana Pancakes and chicken and waffles
Amazing food, fantastic craft beer selection. A gem in the area. If you havent been here yet, do yourself a favor and plan a dinner here.Update 1/29/2019: while I still like the place, and the beer selection, sorry to say that the food wasn’t as good on my past two visits.
Our last-minute decision visit to The Helm was yet another example of where COVID restrictions derailed other plans but Im not even mad about it! They have huge portions and really fresh ingredients. We were luckily able to get seated right away outside (table for 6) on a Sunday afternoon for brunch.Look at the giant avocado toast I got! Though you cant really tell the size of it from the photo, take my word for it that it was the size of my head! Especially with all of that arugula on top, it was so filling! My husband got the Panzanella; name a better combination than burrata and juicy, ripe tomatoes. Ill wait.Though everything was pretty tasty, I would say that they could probably make the portions a little smaller to reduce the food waste. Most of our group was not able to finish their meals unfortunately.
Food was good. We had hamburger and brisket sandwich. Salad was good as well but the huge chunk of lettuce was very hard to manipulate. Should hAve been cut up for easier hAndling. Thumbs down on not having the chicken with cornbread available for late lunch/early dinner. Waiter said not available until 5:30! That info should be noted on website menu. Disappointing .
Not being greeted because the hostess had her nose in a book kicked off our visit. We were expecting magic on the chef charcuterie plate but felt in the end it lacked flavor and diversity. Fondue pot had flavor but was so overwhelming in the pre-soaked bread it underwhelmed. Fish and chips were terrible as my dining companion told me. The fish itself was cooked well, but the amount of breading made it impossible to taste. I had the fish special. It was flavorful and actually something Id like again.
I really wanted to give 5 star as it’s a total foodie place but i think head chef had called out that day. Our onion rings were awesome but on the menu it says it’s served with their homemade buttermilk ranch. It was presented with 2 ketchups. I didn’t have a second to ask for ranch and he was gone. When i finally got the waiter (he was mia most of the time while serving and it wasn’t busy)...!Thurs lunch time and school is still in. Best I’ve ever had. I wish i could buy in bulk. Burger was told to be prepared medium when asked. I got the most over cooked burger it was sooooo dry and I’m not a thick burger girl. The menu said the burger i got cane with pickled onion, there were no onions on the burger....got s margarita mimosa that was amazing. Just wish the entrees and derail was on point. My husband got a burger and same thing, over cooked. Loved the bun. I’m so conflicted
I dont get it. People rave about this place. I went twice both times disappointment. It can certainly do with interior remodeling. My last visit I ordered a hamburger. I was the only guy in the place. The burger came and was loaded with salt. I picked up the check and the money went up to the bar inform the bartender to tell the cook and should lighten up on the salt. he took the $20 bill give me two dollars change and never said a word. Not even I will a mention to the cook. He acted like I was looking for a free meal. I will not be going back.
What a great place to eat. Great service, interesting and flavorful food selections, great beer. It doesnt get any better. The Tuna ahi sashami was a total adventure in eating... and really, really good. Such a refreshing change from the typical restaurant fare available here in GWL. We will definitely be coming back for another wonderful meal.
This is an ok place staff gets 5 stars plus food on the other hand not so much. Fish and chips over season batter the chips way too salty and they sprinkle paprika on the plate. Good place to watch a game and have a beer or two. Food stick to burgers or something simple.
The problem with the restaurant business is you dont know who you are serving. You have here a bunch of amateurs who cater to the locals who clearly dont eat out much. And if this place is one of the best in town then the bar is set really low. Or there are no standards at all. The worst part is that walking ORANGE pretending to be a hostess. Obviously I wont be coming back because this is a flyover town in a part of New York that really doesnt matter.
I ride out from manhattan to come to the helm sometimes when I want to blow away the cobwebs and enjoy the views and the excellent biking roads. The Helm is now my default stopping place for brunch or lunch due to the quality of the food, as well as the excellent selection or craft beers on tap. The service is good and the staff are friendly, but the burgers and sandwiches are the real highlight. This is one of those places that knows how to server a properly cooked burger that is juicy, flavorful, and has just the right amount of fixins to the burger so as not to overwhelm the flavor of the patty itself.
Small place only7 tables, 4 of which were already taken. ordered coffee and had to ask for spoons and sugar. Silverware was dirty. Never got the sugar. Saw tables get served that arrived after we did, waited over an hour for food. Got annoyed and left. Will never go back
No reason to go to this place during the winter unless you want to get drunk. Theres no heat. The windows arent insulated. The exterior walls arent insulated. Its really not a place for families with kids. It was so cold in there (4°F outside) that although the food on the surrounding tables looked great, we couldnt sit there any longer. Poor kids had their coats on & were shivering. Im sure its an awesome place to go when the kids are left home & youre looking to get hammered with friends, but a terrible first experience there.
Ok so I order a chicken dish that was under cooked and bloody and was told it is totally cooked returned it then had a white sangria served with flies in it and was expected to pay for it. Top it all off the young staff thought it would be funny when everyone had there meals packaged for left overs to include mine including the used napkin. Very classy place guess I was local never again.
Although the Helm has been open about 5 years, we first visited it yesterday. They have outdoor seating as well as indoor seating with the appropriate social distancing. The crowd was fairly young, as was the help. They offered a separate beer menu side from the Cocktail menu. Keeping with many places during covid-19, they had consolidated the food menu. It all looked lovely. So why only 3 stars? It was the prices. $11 for a margarita is a little steep in my opinion. Also keep in mind that most of the food is suited to take out and so is expensive sandwiches. However I decided to increase my rating to 4 stars in that they had a number of local beers and carried Pennings cider - an excellent choice!
Havent seen a menu like this in the area not only did every dish that walk past me make me drool I might as well just eat the menu because it just was awesome we had the f0ndue and some wings and Im sorry that I couldnt stay longer and eat everything on the menu Ia must go to if you want good food the chicken and waffles walked past and I just Im so sorry I didnt get

2022-05-10I had a great experience here. It was simply a take out brunch order but the staff was great. The food was delicious. They were working with a brunch menu and clearly stated that but they also had a specials board which was very extensive. Im plan to dine in and hope the experience is just as good or better.

2021-08-31Service was great! Staff was very busy and still on point!Unfortunately the food….yikes! The Trout risotto “specials” my guests orders where the worst dishes they ever had. The trout risotto was atrocious. It was extremely greasy and the risotto was basically regular rice covered in oily sauce.Honestly I wish My two guests where not so kind hearted because I would have sent them back. $30 a dish was the biggest slap in the face at the end of our meal but my guest insisted on not returning the food. I wish I spoke up at the time but we just wanted to have a meal after a crazy day.So avoid the risotto is my take from this experience. The other dishes we had where not too bad but they where very disappointing in flavor. The garlic chicken was not good because the garlic was grossly undercooked and just horrid. We needed to smother the wings in hot sauce in order to consume them. The flaming hot Mac was decent. The cheese was heavy and tasted too processed.Fried feta was great itself. The salad was literally had no dressing or virtually non.I honestly liked the Pork belly…but the cuts are way too large. Portion is great candy coating flavor Great the meat itself bland and the size of the cut makes you taste the transition. All and all the experience, view and atmosphere was amazing and we loved it.5 stars for service and environment3 stars for food and taste.

2022-05-08This is one of my favorite places for date night with my better half. This week’s special had a vegan option (jack fruit tacos) that blew my mind. I also had the tuna sashimi that hit the spot. My favorite drink is the blood orange jalapeño margarita and if your going to brunch, it’s only right to start off with a “swifty” shot. I have been to this restaurant plenty of times and have recommended this place to family and friends. They are never disappointed and always want to go back whenever they’re in town.

2021-10-08The food and drinks were phenomenal! my friends and i stayed in Greenwood Lake for the weekend to check out the ren faire and made a stop here for lunch. i got their veggie burger and hard peach cider and i was super please. it’s a little more than the average price but for how good it is, it’s worth it. so, if you’re in the area and looking for good food, stop here!! you won’t regret it!!

2022-05-22Great food and service. I appreciate how they hire a young staff giving them opportunities to serve.Other than that, the salmon was just a little dry. The jalapeno margarita was delicious.

2022-02-18Went there on Valentines Day with a reservation. When we got there we were told there was a prix fixe menu. The menu was VERY limited but we did our best to order things we (hopefully) liked, some courses were better than others. The pricing was never posted and I guess we should have asked but it ended up being 135 per person for food only, no drinks. The food was good but I think it was a little sneaky to charge that much money for a limited menu like that with no drinks included. We did enjoy most of the food and the service was pretty good, but highly highly overpriced and not worth it. They also charged a 15 dollar credit processing fee on top which I think is VERY petty esp with those prices.

2022-05-28A gem! Everything is superb. It can get packed, but just speaks to how good this place is. I wish it weren’t so close to Jersey Ave. but that can’t really be helped. Get the Steak Salad!!! Yes, it’s $26 but I would pay more if you had to! 😋

2021-09-13Great food. Friendly staff. Some meals are more expensive than I believe they should be.
