They help a lot of people but they could not help me because I lied saying I owned a dog trying to seem like I had pet experience I don’t know why I did that but because I said the animal was still able to produce I couldn’t adopt. So better luck next time works great for others!!
We recently adopted our dog from the Humane Society of New York. I cannot say enough positive things about the people, the service, the level of care and professionalism conducted by everyone involved in our adoption. Bonnie and Sandra are dog experts and really took time to get to know us and the dog to ensure we were a good match. We could not have gotten a better pooch anywhere. We feel so lucky to have been chosen as his forever home. We are all so delighted and he has completed our family. Many thanks to the staff at the Humane Society. I would highly recommend talking with them if you are looking to adopt an animal. You will not be disappointed.
First of all a big THANK YOU to everyone who was involved in helping my little man Niño. But I want to give a shout to Joe for getting in touch with me on the spot and for trying to get me in on the very next day (my schedule didn’t allow me that yet I was impressed by the lightning fast speed of response and appointment provided to me) and to the surgeon who fixed my kitty (forgive me doc I forgot your name, but you are one noble lady that I can’t thank enough for helping animals in need)!Long story short my cat hurt himself somehow and for months I was seeking affordable help for him since I’ve been unemployed for quite a bit and couldn’t afford any medical bills at the moment, if it was me I’d just bite a bullet or something, but yeah he was in pain for months and no one was helping unless I showed them the money.Got in touch with the HSNY and was assured xrays are not nearly what the other clinics were trying to charge me. I brought my kitty over and left him for xrays but in a couple of hours the staff called me with the results. His femur was broken right at the joint and it was causing him great pain. They asked for permission to proceed with treatment and surgery was his only option. I picked him up that very same day and not only that they performed the so needed surgery but they also provided the medication needed for his recovery. My kitty is no longer limping and dragging his foot and he shows almost no more signs of discomfort or pain. He’s back to his old routines of mischievous playing and house wrecking and I’m so happy about it. My deepest admirations to all the staff members who made this happen and to all the donations that made this possible. I sure will start donating monthly as soon as I get back on my feet because anyone in need of help with their fur baby deserves that chance that me and my cat were given. Thank you!!!
I love this place they saved my dogs so many times. Low cost nd affordable. Joe is amazing he took my dogs son Prince in as emergency. The fire tote worked out a payment plan. I’m taking my doghter now Ivory to get seen. They are the best and If i ever win the lotto, Im donating half to the Humane Society
With Covid Rules....your pets are brought in for examination, but pet owners must wait outside..so during cold months, dress warm, go wait in a store with your phone handy when they need to call you, or come in a vehicle and park near their entrance. In any case, they are well worth the trip and the vets in staff are extremely knowledgeable.
They were treating a my dog for a condition and recommended surgery to end with the issue. After she had surgery the problem still persist and when I try to speak and take about it they shut me down saying that they have notes where it says that she possible had what they told me she was diagnose with and told me that in their notes they had that she should be seen by an specialist. Be careful and if your pet is diagnosed make sure before trusting them and putting your dog through treatment to have it all written down for your records. I had report them because despite what they have on their notes I have my owns as well and I know exactly what I was told. Now they don’t want to deal with her because they got caught. They had me coming back to bring her and spend $ for visit and unnecessary tests and keep putting her in antibiotics every time she visited them. Terrible experience, the clinic was recommended by a friend of mines who likes it because it’s an affordable clinic which it is, however, to treat serious health conditions just be careful because they don’t know what they doing and you will spend money and at the end the problem won’t be solve and they will try to cover it up by stating that they informed you just because they have their notes but be careful because they verbally tell you something else through phone or in person. Just make sure that what they verbally tell you it’s written on paper as well so you don’t go what I’m going through now.
Zero stars! This place has definitely gone downhill. They used to be polite and assisted in a timely manner. Now they barely answer the phone and when they do they tell you to look elsewhere for help. It’s like do they know the reason why I am trying to go there it’s because I am on a budget and you guys are affordable and used to be known for helping the community.Over the course of the past year I’ve been trying to get my dog an appointment for different reasons, annual check ups, dental ect and their appointments are like 4 months away. This one last time I called, the lady I spoke to asked if my current vet didn’t offer the services I needed 😒. Basically insinuating that I just go get help elsewhere and leave them alone. Honestly, this place sucks now. Good luck trying to get an appointment with them.We need more organizations like these so the pet owners that are on a budget have more options.
Hopefully they are going to take care of my Bo..... We have an appt. For June 13th. I have confidence in the Humane Society... So 5 Stars ahead of time....... I have three Cats that Ive taken off the Streets when they were very small. All Shots and Medical Problems they go to the New York Humane Society. When you rescue a Cat from outside it comes with lots of extra problems like worms & ear mites. But they have always got us through everything. This Problem with Bo (our large Tom ) He has a lump on his tail. So on June 13th 2019 they took blood & a sample from the lump. But we were warned that if there was a problem with the lump. It is to close to his back to re stitch so the tail would have to go. I received a phone call just a few days later. The Veterinarian said the Blood Work is fine and the lump is a Benign keratin cyst that could never turn cancerous. Great News !!! Dr. Wells said if its not bothering Bo to just let it go. Very professional staff 🐈👍
So grateful for humane society for helping my 11 year old havanese who had a large tumor on her neck , they are such caring people there, sincerely grateful for all they were able to do for my lulu ! Special thank you to joe you are very understanding and really words can’t describe how grateful I am for all your help , great doctors and staff !! Thank you for saving my lulu 💕
My cat has pyometra and she needs to be put to sleep(euthanize). I called for help and I spoke to the manager (Joe) he told me that they cant help me after I explained my situation to him. I was shocked about his lack of caring, he told me that hes booked up all the way until June which I dont believe. I am now with my dying cat that is suffering, and I dont a
I understand ppl like to save money, but there’s a certain point at which it isn’t even worth it. I’ve been bringing my dog here her whole life. She’s had a long history of mast cell tumors (cancer). Back in sept I brought her there Bc she started breathing heavy while laying down which got progressively worse. Also developed other symptoms like gagging on her food, and really harsh reverse sneezing. Literally went back and forth multiple times until about mid/late November. Had to wait about 3 +weeks for her test results. They told me a few days. After the few days passed. Never once received a curtesy call to explain that the results are taking longer then expected. Considering my dogs history, the obvious fact that she could be having these issues as a result of something more life threatening, you would think there would be a higher level of urgency. I called multiple times. Day after day. Nothing. Now one can say this is reasonable due to corona virus. And I’d say ok. But I was eventually put on the phone w “Joe” who had the nastiest attitude imaginable. Told me I wasn’t allowed to go there anymore Bc I keep calling. This is what happens when you give ppl a estimated date for test results, and not only does it take almost two weeks extra, but not one time did I receive any type of courtesy call to inform me things were running behind schedule. Or to even see how my dog was doing in the meantime. As if it’s a problem im overly concerned w my dogs health? As if they aren’t a business? As if this isn’t their fkin job? Well now as I write this today my dog has been diagnosed w gastrointestinal lymphoma. Also, never once did the doctor call me since our last visit to see maybe how my dog was doing. I will never bring any animal i have to this place again. I don’t care how much extra money I have to spend. They can keep all their bargains. Now I see why they’re so cheap. My dog had every symptom for cancer/lymphoma never once was it considered smh.
I called to get assistance for my cat who had vomited blood. I got to talk to Sandra who literally went out of her way to get me the soonest appointment possible. Although it is 3 weeks away, she gave me a lot of advice as to how to care for my pet during that period of time. I had grown so accustomed to being treated rather harshly and indifferently on the phone at other institutions....that talking to Sandra made me feel I had finally arrived at the right place. Sandra is the humane element at the NY Humane Society! I look forward to my pre-appointment visit, on Dec. 7.
I recently adopted a cat from the Humane Society of New York and I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of compassion and care the employees had for animals. The adoption process was much more thorough than I thought it would be but for good reasons. Bonnie (the adoptions director) took a good amount of time with me to get to know what my desires were in owning a cat. She was efficient and careful and helped me get the right setup for my new cat Midnight. They have extended help with Midnight since the adoption and I know I can rely on them for help if my pet ever needs it. They are genuine people who care for our four legged friends and though they may be constantly busy, its well worth the wait.
They are great place is clean staff is respectful. Never had one problem with nobody. They took care of my baby with no issues held her down for till the following morning. These two parent cats the mother had these 4 little ones who didnt make it unfortunately. God bless they little souls.
This place is a God Send. We brought our cat here after he received substandard care at another location, which charged us triple the price. Our baby was there for 5 days and had several surgeries, medication and AMAZING CARE. We will always take all our pets here from now on for any emergency or medical care.
Hello this Ms.Eleanor Peanut butter cup/ went to Rainbow 🌈Heaven now we have Peanut sister Ms.Princess 😍 amazing work ! We adopted an adult cat from here a few months ago and were extremely pleased with the experience. The staff put in a lot of effort to help us find exactly what we were looking for in a feline friend. The process was pretty easy and they were willing to answer any questions we had. We LOVE our new cat and are so happy to have her.
We took our Boston Terrier (the center of our world) into the Humane Society to have a simple teeth cleaning and just one tooth pulled. This was a terrible mistake. Our dog has not been the same and has been suffering ever since.Firstly, when we picked him up after the procedure, we learned that he had to have SEVEN teeth pulled, not one. Secondly, and even worse, his body was inflamed, and later that night we found that he had two lumps on his shoulder. Three days later, his skin on one side of his chest began to sag and looked as if it had been separated from his muscle. We called the Humane Society immediately to see the doctor, but the receptionist refused to make an appointment for us. We went in anyway with our dog, and waited until the doctor would see us.Once the doctor did see our Boston, he didn’t know what was wrong with him. He indicated that there was no mention of anything in the chart that would be a cause for concern. He said that the skin should retract, and sometimes that happens after surgery.Several days later, as the skin began to retract, we noticed what seemed to be a gaping wound, about 8 inches long. We also saw that there was an outline drawn with a black marker around this gaping wound. When we went back to the vet, on the second visit, he confirmed that this wound and the two lumps on his shoulders were THIRD DEGREE burns from the surgery from the heating pad. We were not informed that they put the dogs on heating pads. We were told not to worry about the burns, and to not do anything to them by the vet at the Humane Society. These burns have blistered, popped, oozed, and for the past few days, our dog has been losing clumps of fur in these areas.Today, we took our Boston to another vet for a second opinion, and the new vet (not at the humane society) said that treatment and antibiotics is necessary. The burned area was shaved in order to promote healing and avoid infection. They also prescribed topical antibiotics for him to take by mouth and pain medicine. My dog, a former show dog, the best of his breed, will never be the same again.
After months of trying to get an appointment i finally did. You schedule an appointment by text and tell you it is $50 for the appointment. Took my pet inside for five minutes and staff brings out a bill for $135. Yes cheaper than a private vet but what if I didnt have that money? They have to be more straightforward about their prices before they take your pet.
My Bella, has pyometra 😫 . When I arrived the staff was friendly, courteous and accommodating. A special thank you to two caring ladies. Jane Hoffman of the Mayors Alliance for NYCs Animals, Inc. Who put me in contact with Sandra DeFeo of the Humane Society. Thanks to them my Bella is getting the medical attention she needs. 🙏🏽💜
I am in tears as I write. I called so I could get my dogs a checkup and routine blood test, but also because I feel like one of my girls is losing her hearing. The person was so cold. She said there’s nothing we can do! All the doctor would do is snap her fingers. I am so upset. She was so cold and unfeeling. She was very short with me as if I had done something to her or offended her in some way. I was so confused. I called because I wasn’t sure and foolishly thought they would check her ears for other causes like ear infection, etc. I asked if she recommended somewhere else to go. She said I don’t know, then there was my awkward silence, then she said try animal medical center or some specialty place or something. I said okay, I will check and she just hung up without even trying to schedule checkups for my two girls. I am so upset!
The doctors here are VERY NICE. They really make you feel like they care for your pet the same way you do and they make you and your pet very comfortable. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the desk staff. Extremely rude. Especially if you’re not wearing a mask while standing outside of the building waiting for medication. God forbid you’re having cig while waiting the sidewalk nazis will come quick. Thank god the doctors that work here are so professional and caring, that’s all that really matters. Would be nice if the staff weren’t so miserable but that’s life.
I just took my eight-month-old Cavalier King Charles puppy home after getting spayed at the Humane Society. I was so happy with the service that both she and I got, as not only were they efficient but sweet and accommodating and very thorough in their practice with my little girl. Drop off was between 8:30 AM and 9 AM and after signing in and signing the consent for surgery, we waited for a short while in the waiting room for the doctor to take her back and do a quick physical exam. During the exam the doctor asked me if there was anything I felt should be addressed while the surgery was going on to which I had expressed concern with her a small hernia she had on her belly. The vet was more than accommodating and shared with me exactly what the procedure was going to look like as to put my nerves at ease. I then waited in a brief line to pay for the pain medication that she needed. And they even took care of her small hernia at no extra cost to me! Then they took my baby back with care and was very sweet to her, and called me around 4 PM, just like they said, to come pick her up. When I got there another staff member was very sweet and went through the extensive post op instructions with me and shared that she did great during the surgery. My wait time having to pick her up was minimal possibly ten minutes at the most. For the affordable price and convenience, I was very impressed with the staff and the facility and will absolutely recommend to anyone who needs to get their puppy fixed in the future. Thank you for the great care!
My small dog got sick very quickly, I spent all my money on urgent care for him and had no money left to put him down which cost $300+ at most places. Thank god I was able to go to Humane Society who took my dog in despite my financial situation and they were able to give my dog the final care he so desperately needed. Thank you and god bless your hearts and soul.
Since the pandemic starter you cannot go inside the clinic with your pet. The staff is very friendly and considerate, my Yorkie got very anxious inside and they brought her back outside for me to calm her down. The waiting time is longer and the veterinarian will call you by phone when they are with your pet.
I can’t say enough good about this place I love this place the staff is so incredible Joe the manager has went out of his way to help me every time I bring my little pug in there they are the kindest sweetest people in town the doctors are so professional they always have the best bedside manner they always work with you I am on your schedule you know if you need to come in they always try to fit you win at a convenient time and try to work you and so you would be able to see the doctor iPad friends that can’t afford the full cost of the vet bill and they will work payments out with you I think this place is such a wonderful place they treat their dogs so well rant enough about this place!!!! Love love love joe is the manger and he is so so kind and has such a great heart !!!
Ignorance, wrong judgement and a rabies vaccine caused the passing of our cat! MUST READ.12 years ago I brought an abandoned beautiful Korat kitty, named Jake home. He became a dear family member and my wife and I took very good care of him. In 2020 Jake developed hyperthyroidism. Our former veterinarian, a careless individual, didnt forward the blood results on time requested by specialists for a I-131 treatment, which has a 95% success rate.Upon recommendation I contacted the Humane Society - A FATAL MISTAKE! They said, they would conduct a blood test, but also administer a rabies vaccine. I knew from experience Jake would be suffering from this shot. THEY MISTOOK HIM FOR A RUSSIAN BLUE! Its written on the blood test! The amount of fat in a Korats body is much less than that of a Russian Blue. I had to tell these trained, licensed Experts that Korat cats are known for their sensitivity to vaccines and URGED THEM NOT TO ADMINISTER THE VACCINE. They didnt listen, gave me an attitude and administered the shot anyway, without my consent! One hour later I was handed back an unrecognizable cat! When I arrived at home, Jake stumbled out of the carrier and needed to rest. He drank water, but he wouldnt eat. It is common, that cats become lethargic and dont want to eat for 1-2 days after receiving the rabies vaccine. I made sure that he always had water. On Tuesday he still wouldnt eat. Wednesday morning my wife rushed to the HS and received Mirataz to stimulate his appetite! A medication on top of a fatal vaccine, to fix the mess theyve caused. It didnt help. Jake ate some chicken broth and rested. Early Thursday I mixed some of his favorite food with water. He ate more and we both were full of hope he would soon begin eating again as usual. He didnt. We called the Humane Society. The operator, not so friendly anymore assured us: (Quote) Yaron will call you back. You are the first on his list, I promise! (Unquote). NOBODY HAD THE DECENCY TO CALL BACK! It must have come to their mind, something may have gone very wrong...On Friday Jake slept a lot. We were holding him in our arms and gave him water, which he rejected. Now it became clear: The rabies shot finally took its course. His system began to shut down. Jakes eyes became teary, he knew we did everything in our power to help him. It was heartbreaking. Shortly after he fell into a state of half-asleep. We both comforted him in our bedroom, his favorite place, where he loved to watch the birds, played with his two fellow friends and cuddled with us. Finally he took one more deep breath and passed. Luckily, he was not in pain. WE CALLED THE HS and received the same answer by a now annoyed operator.Following Monday, I was fed up with their ignorance and I told Sandra (exec.director), that our Jake had passed. She made excuses right from the start. She wouldnt listen and repeatedly said: We helped. We approved the food. Your cat was sick. Me: Given that fact, the doctor could have made a different decision.SHE ADMITTED, THAT THE KORAT BREED WASNT LISTED IN THEIR SYSTEM. Her reluctance to listen made me angry. I raised my voice and asked: Why did Yaron, who administered the fatal vaccine never returned my call, although I was promised he would? My cat didnt get to eat the prescription food , BECAUSE of the shot. The blood test made no sense, BECAUSE he isnt around anymore to receive further treatment. She had no answer to that. HELLOOOO... ANYONE HOME?You dont give paying clients who entrust you with their beloved pets an attitude! You dont make excuses. We all make mistakes, but not admitting it, insisting you didnt do anything wrong, not responding in critical situations - is NOT what I consider professional or Humane care. Yaron has never called back, nor did he express A WORD OF COMPASSION!WE ARE SHOCKED by such behavior and wont seek their services again. We have to find a reliable veterinarian for future exams of our two tabby cats. Someone who cares, listens to his clients concerns and responds!
When my dog Max, who I adopted at the Humane Society in 2009, died during COVID, I called the Humane Society to inquire about adopting another dog. When I asked questions about the process, such as how I could meet the animals in light of the fact that the building is closed to the public, I was told to go to another shelter. That was the first red flag. How are the animals being adopted out if theyre telling people who want to adopt to go elsewhere? Why does the website show only 16 animals for adoption when this shelter has fives times that number? Why arent they posting on social media about animals who need homes? Why is the building closed when they could ask people to wear masks and show proof of vaccination? I called the Humane Societys Executive Director, Sandra Defeo, to express my concerns and to encourage her to send the animals to facilities that are actively doing adoptions. I was gobsmacked when she said that the animals are already home at the Humane Society.
I was referred here by the ASPCA.... Scheduling an appointment was easy Heidi pleasant and helpful . Yet I called again a different day and she wasn’t as pleasant a bit sarcastic. Thank GOD I have a car and was able to wait in my car. As due to COVID the clinic is closed. You have to drop your pet off and wait outside. So my pet is being seen and the doctor calls and let’s me know all of the tests, blood work that will be done. NEVER mentioned prices she was beyond rude also. So I wait about an hour or so I get a cell back to pickup pet and wait for his meds and the bill. I was prepared to pay at least $150 bucks but I was alittle shocked my bill was $341 dollars. THANk GOD i didn’t go shopping first. And they do not accept CARECREDIT. Yes they are much cheaper than a regular vet but goodness let the pet owner know prices of exams before hand. That’s the only thing I didn’t like. But as my cat also needed to be spayed/neutered I paid for that also.only $85 bucks n $26 for rabbies vaccination n they also talked me into getting other blood work that was another $20 bucks smh. So I just paid the $46 dollar difference. I am happy that during this pandemic they are open n taking care of pets. Only complaint the waiting outside and it was freezing/snowing and no mention of exam costs before actually doing them.
Why does this place tell people to submit adoption applications if they know in advance that they’re not going to contact you? I submitted an adoption application to “Sandra” at HSNY nearly 3 weeks ago, yet I have been ignored despite several follow up calls and emails. I finally got through to Anne Marie, who asked me to whom I sent the application. Their website list only ONE address, so why is she asking me that question? She assured me that Sandra would call me back to follow up on my application, but Sandra never called. I’m sure other people who submitted applications didn’t go to the lengths that I went to follow up. They probably just went to another shelter, which is what I ultimately did. I feel badly for the animals who are stuck behind bars because Sandra and Anne Marie can’t be bothered with contacting people who want to adopt.
Friendly staff but due to Covid I had to wait 1.5h outside in the cold. For people dropping off their pets heres one good advise: once you drop off your pet and they take it inside, you are free to go somewhere warm. The vet will call and you can clarify the reason of your visit prior to the examination. The vet will call again once done. Thats the cue to head back so you can pay and pick up your pet. Saves you some time in the cold.
I have been calling and sending text messages for months trying to get an appointment for someone to see my dog. No one has messaged me back or even acknowledged any of my texts. I get that operations were affected due to covid, but we have had over a year to adjust. Its so unprofessional that no one has even acknowledged my desperate messages for help.
They were very compassionite. They treated my dog before collecting payment. They stated they would work with me on that issue. I live in Chelsea, ny and the vet I went to there wanted 800 upfront before even touching my dog. Im on SSI all I could do was walk out and cry.Thank god for Human Society.
Earlier today I said goodbye to my beautiful 10 year old cat Jazz. Almost overnight her throat became filled with swollen lymph nodes the vet thought was the result of cancer. She hadnt eaten in 2 days except for a few treats. There was a chance her throat might close up. I was not going to let her suffer any longer. My regular vet quoted me $300+ to end her suffering and didnt have an immediate opening. The ASPCA said there was a 2 week wait and told me to call every day to see if an appointment opened up.My third call was to the Humane Society. They said no appointment necessary, just bring her in between 1:30-3-30, any day, 7 days a week, no need to call first. The fee is $70.I brought Jazz in today and through a flood of tears explained why I was there to the receptionist. He could not have been kinder or more thoughtful. He filled out the paperwork for me when I couldnt manage it.Within minutes I was called into an exam room. Two kind, caring vets (one may have been there to assist) examined Jazz and confirmed my decision to end her suffering. The vet who performed the procedure explained every step to me. She gave me time to be alone with Jazz after the first injection.I asked if I could have some of Jazzs fur. The vet shaved some off and put it in a plastic bag. She then made paw prints of Jazzs front paws in a cement-like memory box that has a leather cover and includes a place to put a picture. A condolence card and the Rainbow Bridge poem were included in the memory box. When the procedure was done the vet gently wrapped Jazz in a soft blanket and carried her out of the room.I left the office in tears, aware that this entire process, from my first call to that very moment, was handled with an extraordinary amount of kindness, empathy and professionalism worth far more than $70.As a result of my experience today Im going to switch vets to the Humane Society for ongoing healthcare for my other fur babies.I sincerely cannot thank the Humane Society enough for helping me through this traumatic experience.
I cannot explain how grateful I am to have such high quality vets nearby. Dr Postler is amazing! She explains everything very thoroughly and truly wants to help your pet. I guess I can’t speak for the other vets but she is exception.Waiting outside in freezing conditions during Covid is not ideal but I just go shop at TJmax around the block and it makes the experience even better. Besides, for this quality of care, I’d freeze outside for three days.
Apparently, neither I nor my cat are good enough for this place. Ive been putting off taking our sweet old boy cat in to get checked because our local vet is so expensive, and I had high hopes for finally getting him some medical care. I sent several emails and answered follow-up questions, was then told that Id have to call and speak to a manager. Called, tried to speak to a manager, left a message with a receptionist, said Id get a call back. Never happened. Poor kitty.
1/10/21 - took my pug to get her yearly annual today, along with her yearly rabies shot. Because of the pandemic, no one is allowed inside anymore. Owners have to drop their pets and wait outside (they set up a socially distanced area with signs for owners to wait). When you come here, press the buzzer and wait for someone to come out to assist you. When someone comes out, yoi tell them why you are here & then they make you fill out a small form (name, pets name, reason for visiting and ur contact number). Then you drop your pet inside and stand outside until the vet calls you. I waited less than 30 minutes and the vet called me to discuss my dogs evaluation. Then had to wait a little over 10 minutes and then they come out with the bill and you give them your credit card. After you pay them, they bring your pet outside.I thought everything was quick and efficient. Thankful for Dr Hershberg who is an awesome vet!
The doctor was great but it took me over a month to get an appointment. Once there, the atmosphere was chaotic and harried. There was a dog barking constantly from somewhere in the back. They told me my kitty needed dental work but that they were backed up 6 months for dental appointments. It’s inexpensive compared to other vets but my appointment stressed me and kittyout.
We have had the pleasure of going through two adoptions the The Humane Society of NY. The process can be challenging i.e. arms, references and so forth however they are looking on behalf of the welfare of the animals they place. Both adoptions they paired the perfect cat with us and we could not be happier. Our first adoption was a special needs feline and he was the joy. With us for over 14 years he brought joy to us daily. More recently we were in search of a mature older feline yet were paired with a kitten of approx 7 months old. Who knew; he has been the perfect companion and is a valued member of our family. The staff truly does care for all their animals and we will always support them and their mission.
Had a dental procedure for my 10yr old Fox Terrier done here. They were quick and treated my pooch with great care. In the end she had 9 extractions. They gave me all the medications and information to take care of her post operation. Waiting area is kinda small tho they keep the line moving. It did smell like cats the first time i went but was better surgery day. My only issue was the phone call wait time. Was honestly on the line for 45min. Well worth the wait. Will definitely come back should my Foxy needs and medical attention. Thanks all.
They are great people. Had no problem. They did me a small favor waived my fee and held my cat til the next morning after she was great. I will schedule for my male cat to get spayed. They took in the stillborn kittens the ones who did not pull through. I recommend them to all who has pets they very cheap
Im sure they do good work here. But my time spent there was miserable. The place was crowded, my dog was in hell - waiting in a pet traveling bag for 3 hours - and there was little sympathy, empathy or assistance from the staff. Communication was non-existant. After waiting for many hours I never even got to see the doctor. Granted I was 15 minutes late but still... Even if Jane Goodall worked here I dont think I would go back. Torture. But that was just my experience. For other people this place is a miracle - they do indeed provide supposedly low-cost quality care for animals in this expensive city. Why they feel they need to treat people so poorly is beyond me. Last thing : their payment policies are sadistic and overly punitive. How what they do payment-wise is legal is dumb-founding.
Wow this place is a gem. They surpass all of my expectations. The humane society was so attentive and caring. My pet Naya ( 11yo female pit bull) had a deep long laceration on her leg(blood vessels tendon and all) the previous animal hospital I went to said she was going to die and I feel they didnt properly care for her and for a price that was unobtainable. Luckily I was able to meet Director Sandra, Doctor Higgins and The receptionist( wish I got her name) they came to the rescue. This humane society of New York is very compassionate, professional and caring, your pet is in good hands here. Ps oh yeah don’t forget to bring your pets collar and leash, I totally did but they helped me with one :)
I took a rescued cat to the Humane Society to put it in its shelter system, since I knew it to be no-kill. Unfortunately the shelters were full due to relocations from hurricane Harvey, but they gave me a hugely discounted price for neutering, required shots, and parasite removal so I could keep it until finding it a permanent home. They have a donation fund they draw from to cover neutering/vaccination costs for rescued animals. Their vet services overall are more affordable than other private animal hospitals. I had never taken care of a cat before, so the vets and staff were very helpful and friendly in answering my questions and giving good advice. They are very busy and usually booked out for good reason.
I dont think I got the hand held service I saw others get.The original person I spoke to on the phone was great - very supportive and helpful. The Veterinarian was very informative and helpful prior to surgery. After - at pickup time - I witnessed one on one in person education in the waiting room for 3 people picking up their pets. I was next, but I got called to the window to receive my instructions. The others received liquid oral medicine - my Baby has pills. Interesting...Pill has her sleeping - trying to get her to eat.I hope she received good treatment while in their care. Time will tell.
This place is a joke now. Bought my puppy who is a unneutered male whos only 4 months old. After they found out he was unneutered they said that they cant take my dog and I should find a new vet after waiting for this appoint 3 months and without telling me in advance that about this rule. They didnt seem to want to help at all after this after I told them I was planning to neuter my dog at 6 months of age. Used to love this place now I will definitely steer clear and go to aspca.
Really fantastic experience! I never had to deal with significantly long waiting times, and Ive been here three times with my cats already. The doctors are relatively impersonal but they do a great job. The fees are also very affordable. A tip on making an appointment - call early! And always show up early for an appointment.
I applied for adoption a Kitty named Rocky, Filled out the adoption papers and I waited and then I made a call and the woman administrator took more information. But after a while never heard from her again. Which I found was rude. So I would say my experience wasnt so great.
The humane society staff were friendly and accommodating. The timeframe was very quick meaning I was seen at my appointment time no long wait and didnt have to take long regarding the visit. The very was very informative and answered all of my questions. The room was very tiny where the visit was conducted but we werent there long so that want a real issue. The price was fair compared to other vet offices.
Did anyone say disaster? Brought my adopted cat there today for his first check-up. Nobody told me I had to present his rabies certificate in order for him to be examined... went through a frustrating hour of calling the shelter to have them email the certificate, in between rude calls from the vet inside the facility who insulted me every chance she got. The vet techs were running in and out with pets, paperwork, and credit cards. Seriously, maybe they should just stay closed until its ok to have regular office visits. Im giving 1 star only because the review wont post if nothing is selected.
I think this place is great. They seem to really care about the animals and they prices are the most inexpensive Ive seen. The only complaint I would have is that they dont let you cancel appointments even it seems in the event of an emergency. I know a previous reviewer said we should be grateful for the cost of the place however the day before a scheduled abdominal ultrasound for our cat we got hit with a big snowstorm. Its easy to say that Manhattan cleans pretty quick in the event of a storm but what they have to remember is that some people are travelling from outside of Manhattan. I had to drive in from NJ where the roads were still pretty dangerous.
The doctor was superb. However there is a steep staircase going up to the main floor and Im disabled so it was quite difficult. The waiting room is much too small exam room is Tiny clearly somebody needs to give the Humane Society of New York a much larger space. And the front desk is always jammed for people trying to pay their bills and do a multitude of other things. I had a very positive experience and so did Fluffy.
This place is the best. Theyre small (tiny waiting room and exam rooms, as well as limited staff), and booked really far in advance, but they do great work for an incredibly affordable price. My fiancee and I have taken our 13-year-old 40 lb dog there multiple times for vaccines, checkups, heartworm treatment, and to be neutered. We would not have been able to afford all of these procedures if not for the incredibly low cost of the Humane Societys services. Most recently, we took our dog to get bloodwork done to confirm whether the dog could undergo anesthesia at his age. They were so good with him that, although he was nervous, he didnt cry out while they took the blood (like he had done at another vet wed taken him to).Theyre also very honest about their constraints. Specifically, the vet emphasized that theyre not a hospital, so they cant handle emergency cases. They let us know that, since our dog is so old, anesthesia could be dangerous for him. So they suggested that (if we could afford it) we should do any procedures requiring anesthesia at a hospital because, if something went wrong, they would not be well equipped to respond and the dog would need to be taken to the hospital anyway. I appreciated them being so open and honest about this--it made me much more confident in them. In fact, they are very honest and direct (even blunt) about everything your pet needs. I love that.Additionally, they provide discounts on medicine to prevent heartworms, fleas and ticks. Theyre just an outstanding place to take your pet.A note on navigation: The listed address did not play very well with Google maps when I went and therefore Googles directions did not clearly direct me to the location when traveling by car/taxi (uber dropped me off on the overpass instead of on the street itself). I would navigate to the corner of 2nd Avenue and 59th st (or to 300 E. 59th st) instead and walk from there. Also, keep in mind that the building is on a one way street if that affects your navigation.
To the Director and staff of the Humane Society:I am truly grateful for what I experienced today. For over 2 hours I unsuccessfully tried to get my cat into her carrier. I called to say that I might be late. I received several kind responses that Icould bring her at 12pm (the appointment was originally for 9 am). After many tries, I gave up. Joe called me, and said that he would speak to the director about a partial refund. I received a very generous amountback.I never expected this; I understand your policy and it is extremely fairconsidering the very low fees. All I can say is that I am deeply moved by your action. In addition, everyone to whom I spoke either in person or by phone was extremely gracious and understanding. With love and great appreciation,Linda A.Schreiber Patient: 84504
My dog Kristian swallowed a mango pit, and became extremely sick. He stop eating, drinking, & going to the bathroom. The first vet we visited gave is a quote of almost 5K!! I contacted the Humane Society, explained what happened, & they immediately wanted to see him. I took him in, and the staff and docs were very nice to my sick little boy. Before I was given a quote of how much it would be, they were already escorting him to the back. That took great care of him. And not to mention the surgery was half the price & they gave me a payment plan. Im forever grateful for the Humane Society. Thank you very much.
This was my pets primary vet. Recently my pet was having a true emergency, best they could offer was an appointment in a months time. My pet would have died.I feel that they should have same day emergency appointments, especially for returning patients.I am changing primary vet to someone other than this facility.
You get what you pay for here. Yes, its cheaper, but you have to deal with hours on the phone calling before you can actually speak to a real person to get anything done. Getting medications refilled here is a headache to say the least; I dont know why something as simple as that can be so difficult. The staff is clearly stretched thin, and it shows. And the last time I brought my dog here for tests, their EKG machine wasnt working, so the very important test that they THEMSELVES told me I should get for my dog was left off the list -- and oh great, they dont have any new appointments for the next SIX WEEKS. Such incompetence. Save yourself the hassle and just eat the more expensive bill somewhere else.
If you are tired of paying extortion pricing for vet services in NYC, this is a solution. However they do ask you to pay $40 for your visit in advance and it is not refundable. You may also have to wait weeks for that appointment. But this is the Humane Society not some NYC store front vet out to empty your bank account. You should happily give them the $40 bucks.
The negatives are, you have to prepay to make an appointment and the appointments are always about three weeks out, so don’t expect an appointment soon. Also, your pet must be vaccinated. I understand their reasoning on this, but if your pet is sick and you haven’t vaccinated yet, care should be provided and the vet can determine when the pet can be vaccinated after diagnosis of the pets illness. The positive of this place is their spay/neuter process. I’ve been involved in TNR for many years and taken many cats to be spayed/neutered and from going with friends and family to this place, I see they run their spay/neuter process very smoothly and the costs are reasonable. Many years ago, I rescued stray kittens in Astoria and I remember their vet was so kind in caring for them (they had worms) and he was extra kind in not charging me because I rescued all the four kittens. I hope this review was helpful.
Wow! This was the best service from a NYC vet that I have received. There are a lot of vets out there trying to take your money. My dog was diagnosed with bladder stones and needed surgery. I was given a $1500 dollar estimate from a vet in Harlem, which I was then told may go up depending on unexpected costs. I ended up paying $650 dollars for her surgery. I paid upwards of $90 to get a check up from the same vet and the humane society only charged $45. The humane society was also very professional and respectful of your time. Overall, I was very pleased with the service.
Its a great place to get your fur kids treated ! The doctors care. They have plenty of experience and resources and really go all out to give you great care. Ive never once felt like I was being nickel and dimed, which is a huge issue at a lot of other places Ive gone to. If you want great care, with zero b.s., go to humane!
Top notch veterinary care for people who love their pets but cannot afford human non-insured prices.Must make appointments 2 months in advance, and for dental 8 months in advance. All fees are pre-paid and non-refundable in order for them to function on such a low budget.HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Very unprofessional staff ,I got hung up on because I refused to leave my last name but I had given my first name and contact information. With that being said ,I will not be going to this place. They seem to be poorly managed and one bad experience speaks very loudly about what service is given there.
Really affordable visits, pre-surgical work up and surgery! One must be patient when making an initial appointment but the benefits are worth it bc youre going to have a really experienced team of vets, techs and front desk personnel. Yearly vaccinations are also very affordable. I think i spent less than $80 in all mandatory NYC shots on top of the $40 appointment fee. Wait time depends on the vet you get. Some vets are friendlier than others but its worth the wait. Dental surgery was less than $600 for everything including extractions (mine had 38 teeth removed,) antibiotics, pain meds and visit. Youll need initial visit, then a pre-dental visit which took weeks to get bc theyre pretty busy but then they scheduled surf afterward-perhaps another week or so after. Good luck!
I usually have a 50/50 experience with this place. Staff is overworked and appointments can be far in between. But Dr.Postner is Wonderful! She takes the time to talk to you about your pet and she really listens. She sent my cat home with calming meds for his next appointment. Amazing service from her.
If you come here be prepared to ask way more questions than you think necessary, sit with your pet for a long time in a crowded and noisy waiting room, and do a lot of leg work to remind the staff to do their job.I understand that this is a non-profit with an admirable mission, and rates are cheaper for pet owners who would find procedures otherwise prohibitive... but service and communication here has much to be desired. Staff are overwhelmed, unorganized, and overbooked – in my case, they failed to inform me about important details regarding a medical procedure for my pet, provided very little detailed follow up, were nearly impossible to contact (rarely do they pick up the phone). It took weeks and multiple reminders to get them to forward important test results to my vet.
I was referred to the Humane Society by my Upper West Side Vet for a dental cleaning I went for pre dental blood work Aside from the difficulty getting through on the phone, it was well worth the wait. The staff are terrific. We saw Dr. Bernstein, He did a thorough exam, full blood work and exam. I highly recommend them and they are much less expensive for a dental cleaning which we will be doing this Friday.
Wonderful doctors, nyc is lucky to have this place with all the $ vets in NYC. I have gotten the dogs teeth cleaned here and check ups. No problems she seems very Happy. some times not as efficient as a normal vet but substantially cheaper for similar level of service.
Ive been trying to get help, Ive been calling texting and sending emails and its been 2 months and I still havent spoken to anyone. I will give another rating when I get to speak to someone. For those that are going through the same issue, I wish you the best of luck.
My dog was sick and the humane society took blood, stool sample and found nothing. Was advised to change her diet which I did and shes fine now. The blood work and medicine and all other fees were a bit high for me, I was expecting a low price for a low income location. Overall I would take my dog there if I couldnt get to another location.
Horrendous vet. Two months to get an appointment. 3 hours late once we arrived for said appointment. Zero communication from the staff. When we asked what was going on the staff yells at us?!?! They already have our money (you have to pay in advance) so what do they care? Waiting room backed up with too many creatures and irritated people. The place is cheaper than most commercial vets but honestly not that much cheaper. If you can afford to go ANYWHERE else, do yourself that favor. This joint aint worth it.
Full disclosure...I never actually brought my pet to them but the experience of setting up the appointment alone was enough warning for me not to bring my dogs there. To set up an appointment you are subjected to a lengthy recorded message which basically says they wont even discuss scheduling an appointment unless you pay with a credit card in advance. Once they get paid then they will discuss when you can bring your pet in. Not a word of concern for your pet. Just threats of forfeiting your payment if you need to change the appointment for any reason whatsoever. Even if you have to reschedule you have to pay for the original appointment AND the new one. Ive had Oncologists and surgeons who had a less strict policy. Any vet whose main priority is getting paid over the well being of my dog does not deserve my business.
Under the new guidelines of texting they completely ignored my pleas of arranging an appointment to put my beloved down since she was diagnosed with cancer and her quality of life diminished significantly and was suffering. Even called a week or so after my text when I was now able to leave a VM in the mailbox linked to pressing zero...and again through my anguish and tears NO ONE returned my efforts in connecting with them.Once upon a time, I had such respect and reverence for the care and attention they provided to its patients and their humans. I cannot at this current time agree with what I once believed. Their lack of contacting me looks like a deliberate dismissive approach to not tending to my desperate pleas. There is no justification or excuse for this as far as I can assess. SUPER DISAPPOINTED in whoever has allowed the ball to drop.
Very caring Doctors and Staff. Every patient is treated humane and with dignity. Small waiting room, a bit noisy. Sometimes appointments may run behind schedule... this is mostly due to clients who unapoligetically show up late for their scheduled appointment or people who walk-in without an appointment. They try to accommodate and take care of all who reach out to them for pet care. They are low cost so thats why it is always so busy. If you have time to spend and dont want to spend alot of money for the same private vet care...then go there. Not a good place if you have Champagne taste with beer money.
Please note Im humane society biased as I volunteered as well as helped foster a few cats. I also adopted my current cat from the humane society. If you need a vet or help with your dog or cat there is no place better to go than the humane society. That goes for anywhere whether it be NY/NJ or even Michigan the humane society will take care of your companion animal at a significantly reduced cost in comparison to any other private vet. Definitely use them if you need em!!!
Clean. Affordable. A little busy but they keep to the appointment schedule pretty well. And the veteranarian we saw answered every question, whilst showing great kindness to my dog and me.Not sure about the staff. No problems for us, but they’re put upon by the volume (in both senses) of their clientele, and might get testy at times. We go back and forth between this clinic and the Animal Medical Center -here for routine care, there for the unparalleled expertise if anything scary or complicated comes up. Both are working out well, so far.
Extremely rude staff at the desk made my experience a living hell. I had been going there because of affordability, and the doctors are good. But if you need anything from the desk staff, forget it, they are overworked and bitter and inefficient. They kept yelling at me and taking their frustrations out on me for no good reason, and made my life miserable for a few days. The way the guys spoke to me really did a lot of mental harm. I am glad they are doing this job out of love for animals, but I want to say, please be nice to people!
Absolutely Love this place.Yes sometimes it can get a little hectic but the vets really take their time examining the animals. I had an emergency with my cat who had swallowed an earring an it was ready to rupture his intestines and he pretty much wouldve been done. I took him to two 24 hour vet hospitals which wanted to charge me two thousand dollars for the procedure alone. I had no other choice but to call human society in the middle of the night and request and emergency visit. We were scheduled early, the vet checked him and he was rushed into surgery right then and there. Everything came out to $860. They are very reasonable when it comes to prices and the vets are great and really care for the animals.
No pain no gain is the motto of using this vet hospital for me. Yes you have to use their horrible long voice system to make an appointment but once you finally reach a real human being, it is really not so bad. You have to book in advance and you have to be ready to pay over the phone, which means you cannot cancel easily but seriously, should not we be more committed anyway?I took my Persian cat here for neutering service and it cost merely $42 here including the quick exam they performed. I was shocked at their low price because I have called 2 vets in my neighborhood (East Village) and also Bidawee and they all wanted more than $200 for the service + exam. I thought vets love animals?! How come they want to charge so much more for the same service?! Anyway, I showed up at the drop-off time at 9AM and had to wait a bit in the crazy waiting area, with dogs barking, licking and jumping but it is worth it. My cat got it done perfectly and he showed no sign of fatigue, nausea, etc.I would go through the trouble to do it here for the price, quality of service and the friendly staff. Just dont expect this place to be all posh and high-end.
I called to make an appointment for my pet. A woman answered and said, no problem just hold one minute. I waited on the phone for 58 minutes until the humane society closed and no one ever came to the phone. How dare these people tend to their clients so inconsiderably. If my dog hadnt already been going to this vet for years, I would switch to some other establishment asap. Also, there is one male secretary who often answers the phones who has been extremely rude in past experiences.
I was very happy with their vet services although you have to book them at least a week in advance as they are very popular due to good prices. You also have to pay for the vet checkup over the phone while making an appointment, otherwise - no appointment. The vet and volunteers were very kind and truely loved to work with animals. I also liked that they let some pets out of the cage to make sure they enjoy themselves while waiting for a new owner to find them.
I have been with this pet clinic for years and I hate it. My cat and dog both have allergies and needed to see a specific doctor. Before we found out that they had allergies they had a vet that just kept giving my animals shots to control their breakout instead of actually seeing what was wrong. When they finally got a different doctor we found out maybe a year later. Their doctor quit and I was not notified. They have never seen me at my appointment time no matter how early Ive been. They gave my animals shots before telling me what they were doing and letting me decide if that shot could wait or not. They dont call you back with follow up. They never answer the phone. Ive always had a wait time of at least 30 minutes or longer. I think once or twice did I wait only 5 minutes. They dont even apologize for the extremely long waits. The only reason they are getting 2 stars from me is because they are one of the cheapest animal clinics and have someone who can help my animals. AS SOON AS I FIND A VET THAT HAS WHAT I NEED I WOULD PAY MORE JUST SO THEY DONT HAVE TO CONTINUE TO GO TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY.
Im tired so this will be a bit of a ramble. i went here for a 2nd opinion for my cat today. i saw DR. WELLS (spelling?) she was a great communicator, kind, infomative, very honest - and very important to me - i really liked very much the way she and the handler (forgive me, i dont know titles) handled our cat. the vibe in there reminds me of amsterdam - cozy, eclectic, small rooms, i liked it. they even saw us on time. their prices are SOOOO much cheaper than other vets. i just dropped almost 2k at another local vet. i already got an ultrasound at my local vet for 375 - other places quoted me 475 and 575 ish - this place i think would have been 210 for an ultrasound. a normal checkup here is 40, other places its like 75-100. the problem is they are so busy they are usually booked a month in advance, so i couldnt go to them for the ultrasound first, they had no opening and my cat was a bit of an urgent situation. i was lucky this time, someone cancelled so i swooped in for a second opinion. ive read here some doctors there suck, i was afraid of that, but i was super happy with dr. wells. in the end she completely agreed with everything my local vet said, but she did prescribe a different medication to try. i wish i lived closer, and that there were more places in nyc like this one. also, if you have a cat or dog, check out forums for people who are obsessed (like breeders or rescuers) - i found more natural remedies to try and other products to try/buy since prior meds arent working so well (we wil try the med dr. wells prescribed tonight). no vet told me about stuff like nutrical, kmr, slippery elm bark, catsure, fortiflora , bonito flakes, etc. i learned all that from going to thecatsite forums (im not a shill for them, just writing in case this helps anyone.) we are still not out of the weeds with our baby cat, i am hoping the meds the vet prescribed work, but i was very, very happy with this place and dr wells. also even the people in the waiting room were so cool, one lady told me another appetite stimulant to try. it pays to be a talker lol. anyway so read the reviews and see which docs are good, and id totally recommend making an appointment here.
Today was my first visit and I was POSITIVELY impressed with this place: all the staff was friendly, respectful and professional. The lady at the reception was so cool with my clumsiness and lack of preparation, the doctor and her assistants were careful, clear and dedicated, the waiting time was far less than I expected, and their prices are fair.
The humane society is a great resource for pet owners with more limited means. While there is a wait to get services, the people who work here clearly care about your animal, as well as all animals and are all incredibly good natured with great advice. Spays and neuters are especially affordable here, but be aware you will have to schedule your appointment way in advance, and they will only spay or neuter cats and dogs after 6 months.
The Humane Society requires a lot of patience with its policies and facilities. Making an appointment requires a long lead time, long waits for someone to take your call, and payment in advance. The appointments cannot be cancelled and refunded. The waiting room is chaotic, the vets are overbooked, and the staff is stressed. To speak to your vet, you must email the general address and wait a day for a call back. The vets do not have individual email addresses or voice mail. All that said, the quality of care is as good as Ive gotten anywhere and the prices are literally a fraction of the going rates in NYC. Tip: try for a 1:30 appointment. The schedule starts over after a lunch break and youll be seen on time. Also, Dr. Yaron Schmid is highly recommended.
Knowing that you are receiving greatly reduced prices for veterinarian care, you go here accepting that there are some trade offs for this arrangement. You will be cramped in the waiting room and you will wait. The facility on the upper east side of Manhattan was probably undersized when it was built and has only gotten more squeezed. For outer borough customers, the commute and parking will make you remind yourself that the other local for profit vets will pillage you for the same procedures. The staff is compassionate and I believe quality care is dispensed here.
I brought my cat to be spayed and for all subsequent visits and exams. The entire staff is so kind and efficient and Dr. Yaron Schmid has always provided excellent care. Whenever I have questions, he answers them patiently and takes me through different treatment options for my cat. And of course, treatment here is so much less expensive than other vets weve been to. I love it here and will continue to come back.
My Gizmo, was so very special chihuahua, loved him like no other. He was more than just a dog but a wonderful service animal. Gizmo was treated with care and given several chances to live despite his illness. I am so grateful to the entire staff especially the doctors that made it possible for me to have him eight wonderful years. I miss Gizmo everyday but I he will always be in my heart and in memories we shared. The Humaine Society made that possible, and affordable care they put the pet before the price🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
15 years ago I adopted my dogs from the humane society and have been taking them in for medical care ever since moving to new york several years ago. The doctors and staff are all good people, but you have to be especially patient to deal with their system. I would recommend them for basic care of a pet. That said recently when I really needed them and my pets health began declining, I was disappointed and ultimately frustrated to tears trying to get a simple prescription filled that my pet had been taking since she was 4. I was told she had to come in for bloodwork, which was extremely difficult given her state, but I dragged her up there paid for an squeeze appointment (upcharged 55 not 40), and bloodwork (another 75 bucks), along with having to buy the brand name prescription(65 bucks), that was 1/2 the amount of pills I needed and told shed be on the list for automatic refills. Well that didnt happen and after attempting to get the meds filled for 2 weeks leaving messages and physically coming in, the prescription still had not been called in and the 2 weeks worth of pills was out. I finally got someone to physically go get the forms signed, but even then it too so long to get the paperwork I had to pay for next day shipping for the Rx to arrive(30 bucks). Now I will have to go without the meds and deal with a terminally ill dog whining in horrible pain I can do nothing about. I missed 4 days of work trying to get this situation taken care of which cost me even more money. They ended up giving me only 7 pills and I had to drag my dog out there because she was whining in pain. She fell over and died that night and Im am so beyond angry that those last few days had to be so stressful on both of us.I recommend planning ahead, like an entire month ahead. Ive been dealing with this for the entire month of December almost daily. If I had not called and physically gone it I believe I would be waiting even longer. No one called to update me or tell me anything. With a terminally ill pet the last thing I wanted was to have her in immense pain in her final days I really wish things had gone as well as they had when my dogs were low maintenance and healthy.
Unfortunately I did not have a good experience when I was trying to adopt a pet. The woman that I had the interview and also is in charge of the Adoption Department was very odd and was not very helpful at all. The day of the interview she never even bothered to show to me any cats that were there for adoption and practically told me I was free to looking at other shelters if I was in the rush . I really dont know what her game was but after that I tried to contact her many times by phone and emails but she never had the kindness to call me back. However, I went to another animal shelter and I was able to adopt in the same day my beautiful cat with no problem at all.I dont want to discourage anyone from going to Humane Society to adopt a pet friend because the staff members were very nice and helpful but beware of this nasty and mean lady and if you can avoid her I guess you will win in the end.
I came here last June for my pet hedgehog who wasnt eating, I had a completely different experience from the other reviewers on here but to be fair I went to see their exotic pet specialist. I called once, and they answered, i made an appointment, and when I came in my wait time was about 5 mins. The exotic specialist was phenomenal!! He answered all my questions especially since its my first hedgehog and even gave me his card to email him if I had an concerns. His staff loved my hedgie and took turns passing her around and petting her (with my permission of course). I just made my second appointment with no issues.
The Vet I have now sincerely cares about our dog but it took a while to get to him.also all thier staff are excellent except for a bearded moody glasses wearing staff member who (WHY I HAVE NO CLUE) has made every visit with a terribly sick dog torturious and I found out he also tried to have me tuned away in an emergency and met with all the vets there at that time and told them many false and derogitary accusations against me even though I have been with them since my dog was born. Other than this they have been very very good and understanding to my familys plight.
HUS-NY is an amazing place. Yes, the waits are long; Yes, they dont answer the phone but they are very affordable and the care is excellent--they are here for us and the animals for all of the right reasons. HUS-NY is a non-profit; if we appreciate the care and caring they provide to us and our fuzzy loved ones, donate a couple of bucks in appreciation. It will be used to help them do what they do well and, hopefully provide a bit of relief to the amazing vets who work 20 hours in a 10 hour day (and maybe give them a raise too!). Note: they are NOT, as I had originally thought, affiliated w/ the Humane Society of US!THANK YOU HUS-NY,Noodles & Michael
Excellent animal care. I’ve been to other vets and they over-order treatments and over charge on medication. It’s the opposite here.I get caring vets who don’t suggest extra services or over-medicate your dog. Also, their heartworm prevention (heartgard) and flea and tick medication (frontline) is the best deal around. Prices for visits and vaccines are fantastic.
I got turned down because I walked in with my cat who was struggling to breath simply because I didnt had an appointment. My cat is a rescued and I said that I didnt know if she was neutered, so they refused to se her. Wow. Thank God the Animal Medical Center us a few blocks away and took her there instead. At least its an actual hospital, clean, and take pride in their facility. I dont doubt that the Humane Society provides quality care and u will continue to donate to them, but its horrible that they turn down animals.
Ive been going there for yrs. Its not the friendliest place but Dr. Rubinstein, even though very distant, is a good vet. Write down all your questions before going in. Its a rush atmosphere that can make you forget whats important to you. Their fees are very reasonable and they will email you the results of the your pets lab results if you ask them to. No emergency, last minute appts. Visits are only by pre-paid appt. and if youre a no show, there is no refund.
All I can say is thank the lord that the Humane Society exists in New York City!!! :D. Our 9 year old Donskoy Duchess Zhuzha (Russian Sphynx) needed some major dental work and after 5 extractions and two days of rest shes already a changed kitty, no longer cries in the middle of the night and no longer chews her tail. In total we paid $435 ($300 op, $80 for bloodwork, $55 emergency consultation). The op is a standard price and includes extractions and post operative medication. I also noticed that they cleaned her ears and trimmed her nails, which was hugely appreciated.I did a lot of research into this beforehand and I was being quoted (minimum no extractions) $800. Choosing the humane wasnt just about saving money it was also to do with the experience of the vets there. They dont sugar coat the issue and thy tell you exactly how you need to care for your animal going forward, which Im sure a lot of complaints on here is because people dont like criticism. I read a review on here about a possible faulty heater - so I asked them to wrap her up in her blanket before shes placed onto heating systems to avoid direct contact against her furless skin. I checked her afterwards and here were no issues. Also this place is no frills for a reason- if they somehow manage to make a profit off the low price then think of that profit as a donation to their cause. We will be back their in the New Year forher annual check up and boosters. Thanks so much guys for looking after my little girl!!!
Contacted them twice to rescue 2 of my sick grandmothers dogs. The 1st one was rescued in November and he was not only saved but adopted off. The 2nd was saved today after my grandmother was not able to do anything for the dog. I hope whoever adopts her knows how much my grandmother loved her.
I live in New Jersey and they were the only ones that helped our baby when no one else would because I didn’t have the money . Our baby has since passend on but had it not been for their help I wouldn’t have known what to do . They work with you and with your financial situation and they listen . Joe was great, the doctor was also great ., My daughter and I appreciate absolutely everything they did for our baby ! Thank you again to them ! 💙🐶
I just wanted to take a moment to thank Dr. Higgins for all the help with my beloved Starre. I went to another vet when my 14 year old Yorkie turned violently ill on August 5,2019. She wound up staying the night, and in the morning I picked her up to take her to the Humane Society, where she and my other yorkie had both had prior surgeries and spays and unmatched care. My dog was on her death bed and Dr. Higgins made her as comfortable as she could before she released her to me to take her home to pass with her family. Unfortunately, my Starre passed away within the hour in my arms on the drive home. I was devastated. A few days later I received a card in the mail from Dr. Higgins sending condolences. She is an angel, to think of myself and Starre when they at the Humane Society and so busy, and at times understaffed. Thank you so much Dr. Higgins and the staff at the Humane Society of NY. If anyone reading this hasn’t done so already- please take the time to donate to this wonderful organization. They really are angels in human form. ❤️
Dear Staff of HSNY,My family and I have had a very rough year that began last November when our Baby Mia first began to take ill. During the course of trying to find a solution with her the vet costs took a toll on me and my family. I had exhausted visits to our regular vet as well as blood work, urine tests, IV, medications etc… In the midst of this my grandfather was taken ill with stage 4 lung cancer. During this time I searched for a place to help my get our mini red nose Doberman Mia well as my finances had depleted I was desperate and beside myself. Humane Society was my last hope. I spoke with Saundra who treated me with such a tender and caring hand. She listened to me as I explained my situation and the contents of my bank account. She set up an emergency sonogram for Mia for the very next morning. When I arrived Mia was seen and tests were run and medications issued. Mia required urgent attention. The Dr’s and staff all did there absolute best to care for her and get her well again. During this process my grandfather lost his battle to lung cancer on May 4th 2018. On May 26th 2018 I suffered a Major Car Accident which put m e out of work a few days later my uncle passed away of lung cancer as well. Mia continued to decline in her health the wonderful staff of HSNY never gave up on her which provided me with a level of hope I could not explain. Mia could no longer fight our baby was beyond fragile and the was no other choice but to put her to rest….. On 7-3-2018 my heart was in a million pieces, they took such special care of me and my family during this process. They explained each step and allowed us to stay with her until they very end. I could not express in any words enough how blessed we were throughout this entire process with our Mia as well as all of the staff we came in contact with during all of our visits.Thank You all from the bottom of our hearts. While this experience has been a difficult one you have all made it an experience of kindness, love, humanity, empathy and caring.God Bless you all and Thank You, you will never truly understand what you did for us during all of the turmoil we have been dealing with this year.
Do not adopt a pet here. A disrespectful lady named Bonnie will condescendingly talk down to you and explain that you are not suitable to adopt a pet because my wife and I work 9-5 and couldnt possibly have enough time to care for an animal. We wanted to adopt a cat and we werent allowed to even see the cats? It was the strangest encounter I have ever had and the adoption manager must want to keep all the cats to herself and not let anyone adopt them. Definitely do NOT donate or contribute to this place - The only logical conclusion I came up with to explain this weird scenario is that the adoption center is some time of Ponzi scheme that accepts donations and there are no actual pets up for adoptionWe went to the animal care center in East Harlem and adopted a beautiful 4 month old cat the same day. Do not waste your time at Humane Society of New York.
I am a new mom to a two month old Maltese/Cocker Spaniel mix. After days of searching for affordable vet care, a friend recommended the Humane Society. I called yesterday (Sunday) afternoon and was on hold for quite awhile and was about to hang up, but I needed something affordable because my 2nd child is very expensive & doesnt have insurance. So, I agree with some of the other comments regarding the wait time. When someone (Helen) did answer, she was extremely polite, patient and answered ALL of my questions.I am giving 4 stars due to the time in which I was holding before being connected to Helen who made the wait time worthwhile. Otherwise, the wait time alone doesnt deserve a star. If you dont have any patience, dont call or find someplace else!!I will be making an appointment for my Prince and will be back to provide additional feedback re: clinic and service.
I called at 9 am and was told to call back at 9:30 am when the appointment desk opened. I called at exactly 9:30 am and have been on hold for over one hour. I called (on another phone) and the receptionist assured me that there was indeed someone at the desk and I should continue to hold. This is ridiculous. My puppy is sick and was just here 6 days ago. I understand long wait times, but please answer the phone!
Dr. Wells and Staff saved my Fionas (kitty) life. And on top of all my worries before finding these kind souls, I am disabled after 2 major auto accidents, 1 by a drunk driver the other a 4 car collision on black ice, my life has become utter turmoil and suffer great indigence, they saw passed all this and only focused on saving Fiona. I and Fiona have been blessed with the most Beautiful people we have ever met in our lives. There arent enough stars to rate this humane society and the compassion we received is infinite. I love each and every individual with the most genuine respect to the moon and back. Thank you from the deepest core ofmy heart.Marybeth & Fiona Bavero
Just stay away from this clinic!!! The wait was very long (1 hour) because they have just 1 doctor dr silberberg I believe and he was so insensitive and doesn’t care about the hole situation he just said to me this is what it is,,,, the visit room was right in the middle of the hall with dogs and people around,,, really so stress for me and my cat, no privacy at all,,, they sucks!!!
I rescued a 5 year old Maltese from The Humane Society of New York a few months back and the experience couldnt be more pleasant. Bonnie, who helped us, is truly passionate about making sure the pups get the perfect home. From beginning to end was only a few days and the adoption came with the first few checkups on the house. Thanks guys!
If you are looking to adopt, look elsewhere. I was interested in adopting a cat I found on their website and emailed the contact it provided to ask about her. Weeks later I still hadnt heard anything, but I thought, no big deal, they were probably just on vacation. I went in on a Saturday to fill out an application and the receptionist told us they didnt have anyone doing interviews that day, so shed give my application to the adoption director, who would definitely call us on Sunday. She gave us her card, so we called and left 2 messages that Sunday. It is now Wednesday and we have yet to hear anything from her. Meanwhile, I contacted the ASPCA about a cat they had on their website, they called back within the hour, and the next day I got to take home my new furry roommate. All in all: Do not go to this shelter if you are looking to adopt, go to another rescue.
I wish I can give them 0 star. They are horrible. They dont care about your pet AT ALL. Forget about the 1-2 hours waiting time. They dont pick up the phone, dont give you the follow up call after blood test, and have no idea which medicine they are giving as they dont record any information in the computer (the software system that they use is called Avimark and I havent seen any of the staff working in HSNY using it properly.) I dont even know the purpose of them looking at the computer screen if they are not using it!! It takes forever for them to prepare the medicine and to answer the email for making an appointment. I decided not to go there anymore because my ferret is old and she needs life long treatment + medication. I dont want my fuzzy friend get life long care from such place like this.
In my first, and only, experience with the NYC Humane Society, so far, I found the staff very efficient and professional. My Dachsund had her preliminary blood test, prior to her dental cleaning, and Dr. Dasbach called me two days later, as promised, with a thorough report, indicating that, though there was nothing that counter-indicates the dental work, there were some anomalies that require additional testing to narrow down the problem (he guessed, though cautiously, that she may have Cushings Disease but strongly indicated that this was not a diagnosis). I asked for a mailed copy of the report so that her health insurance can render advice as to what I should do, I can receive a second opinion, expected costs, etc. and received it within two days. For some reason, though they tried 3 times, I couldnt receive a faxed report (my phone didnt even ring).Compared to the vets seen previously, the HS didnt insist on my hundt getting all her shots before the dental work (shes an indoor dog and the odds of her getting the diseases that the shots prevent are extremely low). The wait was around one hour (my appointment was at 1:30) and, at least for me, it was quite entertaining. I wasnt even motivated to read some interesting material that I brought, having been forewarned in the comments here about the long wait times, since the characters in the waiting room were more novel than most novels. Perhaps the wall to wall people and the cozy quarters enhance the familiarity most feel or, maybe, its just a New York City thing. :)There was one woman who was so fanatical about her questionable dietary theories that, rather than factually dispute her claims, I took joy in listening to the outrageous claims of truths that she felt with all her heart as her audience waved their heads in unison, agreeing with her every intensely passionate word.Or, the woman who claimed that someone stole her little poochs down sweater, in the waiting room, under the ceiling camera and in full view of everyone. Afterwards she let her 10 inch canine run around playfully until another dog owner reminded her that that was against the rules, Oh, dont worry, she said, hes very friendly, countered by the rule meister, Yea, but my dog isnt. And everyone wanted to know each others pets name, age, personality, and more, much more. I think the form you need to fill out when registering at the Society was less detailed.Tomorrow is her dental appointment. Im looking forward to it, even if my Dachsund doesnt have a clue, poor thing....
The man at the desk I think his name is Joe. He belittled me because I recused a dog. The way he embarrassed me in front of everyone,I can’t show my face there because of him and I’m a senior citizen. I was told to go there because they help people with animals like me. But with that type of abuse no one deserves that treatment. But the doctors and everyone else are great.
I was n still am sooo emotionally wreck when my Baby was dying, i had to put him to sleep, n they were too busy worrying about how much $$ i could spend..im disabled n on SSI.. I have no ashes to remember him by, cause i did not have $150.00 for the personal cremation. So my Baby was put down literally like a dog in a Group cremation! And that i am not proud of..im so sorry Baby ...i now have a permanent place to remember him By. HS should b a little more lean when it comes to our dying babies with parents with low income or no income at all. At that cruical moment...we r not thinking of $$ signs, were thinking of our Babies...SIP Baby, xoxo
Dr Cavanagh has treated both my cats for almost 15 years. As far as Im concerned their is no better vet in NY. I was concerned when he moved to the Humane society. However I trust his judgement without question.I made an apt for one of my cats to be seen there by Dr Cavanagh .He received the same high quality care that he received his whole life. The clinic was clean and professional. All the staff were very caring and professional .I cant speak highly enough about Dr Cavanagh or the Humane society.

2021-07-16I’ve used this veterinary service for my cats for more than ten years. I now have a Dachshund Dog, Dixie Rose. We live in Virginia, Dixie needed dental extractions, I drove to NYC Humane Society!! We received outstanding care, my baby is doing fine. She’s not speaking to me but she’s much better for the dental care. The Doctor that took care of Dixie was Phenomenal! On the ride home, we stopped, she was being held by my daughter. Thank you for the wonderful care.

2022-05-17The Humane Society is an amazing place. Ive had nothing but positive experiences. All staff are friendly and knowledgeable about there responsibilities. The doctors are accessible and can be reached via phone. The prices are reasonable and my dog was in great hands. They took care of him and informed me of the process every step of the way.

2022-07-10I have been going to the Human Society for 40 yrs with all my pets and have even adopted dogs from them. From Dr Cotter who left years ago to Dr Higgins who is an absolute rock star. I have always been very happy with their services. Only one female vet ever rubbed me the wrong way as she was abrasive and I just avoid her and ask that she not examine my pets. I have also donated food, crates, beds, leashes etc to them as I know they can use whatever they can get being a shelter. I highly recommend them as a vet for your fur babies. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Higgins and she is the surgeon here. Your pets are in excellent hands in her care and it comes across in her thoroughness and compassion. Thank you to the team at the Human Society for caring for our fur babies.

2022-05-04I had Such a hard time finding a vet to fix my youngest dog, and they did it quickly and kept me updated, gave me lots of info! We weren’t allowed to go inside because of COVID but still very quick, affordable, and most importantly I’m pretty sure they treated my pet well. They gave her all her shots, and I didnt spend my entire income. Thank you!

2022-05-13I went to a local animal clinic in the Bronx The Veterinary Center at Westchester Square, because my dog had Bladder Stones. To remove the stones they told me that she needed surgery, and that the surgery would be $3000.00 dollars. When I told them I could not afford that, I was quickly whisked away, and that was after just spending $600.00 for only 1 x-ray and a simply blood test. A few days later I called The Humane Society, explained my financial situation and my desperation about my dog. The Humane Society not only performed the surgery to remove her bladder stones, but they did not charge me a nickle, and this sort of kindness never happens to me. trust and believe. They saved my dogs life and I will forever be in their debt and appreciative. GOD BLESS THE HUMANE SOCIETY.

2022-06-01Ive used their service before. In one word theyre awesome. However, now because of COVID you cant go inside their premises, you have to wait outside. They are pretty quick to check your fur babies in.

2022-02-26I can’t rate this place because I’ve never been there; and that’s because they are backed up with appointments. I’ve tried to make appointments 3x’s and I wouldn’t be able to take my cats until June!? I understand they’re busy but there has to be a better solution/system. I’ve had 3 emergencies and had to go to AMC-which is crazy expensive. They do get back to you by email at some point…
