The Hyde Collection in other cities:
An incredible experience. I found the Hyde House online and was stunned to learn a collection of fine arts was only 30 minutes away. Rembrandt, Degas, Ruben....some of the great master can be see without the long drive to NYC. Tour the mansion itself to see the Hydes private collection then check out the attached art museum for a rotating selection of artwork. This is a place worth several visit and I plan to return with my children.
Impressive collection, curation, and presentation. The Hyde home is also quite grand. Would definitely recommend this art museum. Some very unique pieces. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Its not a huge collection, so you can enjoy it at a leisurely pace and take it all in within a few hours. Well worth the admission fee.
This museum is an absolute gem! Their collection is amazing and the each room is beautifully decorated. We were greeted by the wonderfully warm John, who happily shared his vast amount of knowledge with us. He knew so much about the history behind the pieces and is a fantastic storyteller. Go check it out!
The Hyde is evolving from a house museum full of one wealthy familys art collection, to a vibrant gem in upstate NY. The recent contemporary art donation has added a new layer to an already wonderful museum. New programs, & traveling exhibits means different things to experience each time you visit.
Lots of great pieces of traditional and contemporary art. Great special events and exhibitions and the Hyde House is attached to the museum and well maintained and preserved. The Greeter at the front door was warm, friendly and very knowledgeable and helpful. The gardens are also beautiful.
A born and raised local. Made my first visit at 28 years today and, wow. What a gem. The entrance to the building is quite modern with large glass double doors. As you walk through youre greeted with a few quaint pieces of art. The Rembrandt in the back of the main building is a true wonder.
A great museum with exhibits that appeal to all interests. The Hyde House displays a rotating collection of works by Rembrandt, Picasso, Whistler and many others, next to antique furnishings and tapestries. They also have a substantial modern art collection and space for travelling exhibitions. Definitely worth a visit.
Just enjoyed our first Senior Wednesday. The Jane Peterson show is outstanding. We plan on returning before it closes for another look. Hadnt been to the Hyde in a couple years (used to be a docent, so I may have over dosed a bit), had forgotten what a lovely little gem this museum is. Worth a visit.
Great experience with surprises around every corner, as far as fine art by some of the most recognized artists. The museum is small but that makes it manageable, I would say 1-1.5 hrs is all you need to cover most of the exhibit. We caught the Japanese woodblock print exhibit on loan from Suracuse U. The regular exhibit in the original house definitely brings memories of the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston, at larger scale -- if you havent been, and liked what you saw at Hyde, absolutely do make a trip. They have a pay what you wish admission in December so we paid 1ticket worth for two. I would like to see the Museum expand to include a cafe, they do have room downstairs for group events that could probably be cornered off for a small coffee stand with pastries, thats all you need really. Great collection, courtesy of the paper mill old wealth. ;-)My only quip was that I am a little suspicious as to the authenticity of some of the works. The family actively sought after works by some masters, working through dealers in Manhattan. There was pressure and obvious incentive for dealers to find the right art within limited time frames. It is unknown but entirely possible that to please the sponsors and earn commission, dealers could overlook the origin of the work, or even order copies, and pass them off for authentic with all the necessary expert opinion (paid a hefty fee for their verdict). Overall, the world of fine art collecting seems rife with perverse incentive and potential for large scale fraud. Just something to consider as you ponder how such great works could end up in the hands of American social elite. Its not just this collection, its all collections worldwide. Food for thought...
This is well-hidden gem of Upstate NY region. Owners of the paper mill (Finch Paper) behind the museum lived in this house and started the collection. In fact, you can see the mill still operating from the back of the museum! (winter 2019). A feel of the sulphite odor completes the experience, LOL. In any case, this is probably the best private collection of art between Sleepy Hollow (Rockefellers Kykuit) and Montreal. And while overall collection is pretty small compared to top museums in the world, it is amazing to have it here in our neck of the woods. And overall experience of seeing the paper mill and the wealth it created, all in one place, is worth a trip if you are in the area.
Unique space, incredible European artworks back from 1500s to early modern. Lighting conditions are not traditional/optimal for most of the original collection, but enough for investigation of artworks to not be disrupted. Love going here for free as a student. Short drive from Glens falls and Saratoga springs
It is one of my favorite museums. I wish theyd kept the kitchen intact though. Or maybe put the kitchen back. I also wish they had access to some of the other spaces that are closed off. But its not just the museum it was somebodys house you go in there and youre walking into a place that is is as it was when they lived there. I mean I think they might change some things around but its like going into somebodys house, somebody very wealthy who had beautiful taste in artwork and a lot of money to buy a lot of it. I wish theyd open the other bathrooms. And the garden area is beautiful and has a nice lovely sculpture of a family dancing. I thought they were going to make the garden bigger but I must have misunderstood. But it is a lovely little garden with a lovely fountain that the volunteers have worked very hard to make beautiful.

2021-12-31Great place to see an incredible collection in an intimate and unexpected setting. The museum does a good job of mixing classical masters with contemporary pieces. From Rubens to a possible Davinci sketch the collection is carried and interesting. The staff, particularly the person at the front desk does a great job orienting you to the museum. Its definitely worth a trip!

2021-09-15The Hyde Collection is a one-of-a-kind art collection containing masterpiece works from Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt van Rijn, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and many others. The galleries were very easy to navigate around when sauntering through the building. The only negative attribute was the service. Although the receptionist gave a warm and welcoming greeting to all visitors, the other staff members were neither enthusiastic nor open to answering any inquiries. The museum guidelines regarding photography were rather implicit, for the signs denoting no photography was difficult to find. Indeed the majority of staff members were unwelcoming, but the Hyde Collection is still a destination that should be on your itinerary when visiting Glens Falls and the surrounding areas.

2021-06-06A unique museum located in Glens Falls, the Hyde showcases both a large rotating collection of art, but also a home that displays all the vestiges of years past. The interior of the home with its indoor courtyard always seems idyllic to me, and it’s fun to take a journey back if only for a little while. Worth a visit for the entire family. I particularly enjoyed the “Mysteries” exhibit which displays art that is possibly a forgery or may be the real thing. Fascinating.

2022-07-03Lovely and unique house with a satisfying array of artwork, depicting a diversity of styles and a real appreciation of fine arts. The house itself is a piece of art in its design and functionality (doubling historically as both residence and studio/performing space). The paper mill nearby detracts a bit from the atmosphere but it’s still a beautiful piece of property with a fine private collection.

2021-02-28I have always loved the Hyde during non covid-19 times. I also saw the first round of ice sculptures. They were wonderful. Unfortunately, I arrived during the thaw, too late to appreciate the second set. I may may rated five if I caught them.

2018-06-17Great collection, currently showing prints, paintings and ceramics of Rockwell Kent through July 22nd. The building itself is beautiful; particularly the indoor courtyard. Admission was $12.There isnt food at the museum, but just continue into downtown for plenty of choices! Rock Hill Bakehouse Cafe and Spot coffee are both nice, relaxed locations.
