I have been attending the center for events for the last 10 years Marching In the pride parade with them for the last 6 years. Ive done groups with them Ive done 12-step groups with them when I made it to when I was in need of therapy that were there for me. Ive made many friends and allies at the center and will continue to go until the end of time. Its a safe haven for all walks of life and a great place to come relax have something to eat, study, talk, get away from the world or just relax. They offer support groups, they offer education for HIV and other diseases. Also, there is always safe sex tools at the front desk that are complementary because that is very important especially in the LGBT community. Stop by the center at 208 West 13th Street if you are having trouble finding your tribe and are part of the lgbtq plus community or just an ally and run stop and there is definitely something for everybody
It offers a variety of services and outlets. It could do better as far as outreach. It has a separate wing which is misleading for someone new. I attended a dating seminar which was a ploy to buy a book and stage a boring talk show. Instead of being fun and connecting people it created obstacles. At times they are strict about alcohol but if youre sponsoring a big enough venue then its ok. Its a rock for the community at the same time crippling its efforts to fall face first into a pile of broken meth. All jokes aside it has potential.
Sadly, management is lacking for several reasons. We rent a room for our 501(c)(3) NPO to hold our meetings. We have to force the people using our room before us as they overstay their allotted time and get serious attitude as they vacate the room. We also get shuffled around from the medium-sized room we pay $$$ for to a smaller room without warning nor cause, forcing our members to crowd around. In the hottest days of summer, we get put in a room with no air conditioning at times. On one occasion, there was a water main break in the day, and instead of contacting us about this to tell us that they were closing the entire building, there was a note taped on the door stating this fact -- leaving us with no place to hold our meeting, some people coming from as far as Boston and Pittsburgh! Were still unsure if the billing reflects these corrections/changes. If they are going to rent rooms for other GLBT groups, they need to manage it a LOT BETTER. Ive stopped making donations to The Center due to this apparent discrimination.
I was visiting for the first time and the front desk had no care about that. The community there seemed as if my first visit didnt matter. Nor the person before me. Its a nice space, but I dont think they care about their community much. Really was disappointment and my excitement passed quickly. :(
No email on the site to contact anyone for help such a shame this place gets to have such a modern facade playing along as if this is an actual place to get help when you need it. guess not when you have skin like mine. maybe if i were lighter the waitlist would cease to exist.BEWARE PASSERS BY. mirage.
In MY opinion, from my 10 years + Experience I would give this organization 0 stars if I could. If you are white, Hairless skinny/muscular light skin Asian, Muscular Black or Latin Man you will get very far in this organization, If not keep researching for another Organization to fulfill your needs. Its baffling how the LGBTQ community PREACHES acceptance YET they PRACTICE NONE of that with their fellow LGBTQ BROTHERS & SISTERS.
The Closing of the Metanoia exhibit was a glorious thing to see because it revealed the embers burning still in many of us, over the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of our people through HIV/AIDS, are ready to come roaring back to life, and make sure this critical piece of history is not forgotten or edited out of the book.
I love this place! Every time I go to the Center, I feel so welcomed and it feels like HOME.It has been more than 3 years that I am a member and visit the center almost every week.. I also love the Bookstore upstairs. The center houses many meetings groups and events for everyone. The doors has always been open for me and anyone else like me who needed to find a place they belong to. Is a judgement free zone, and you will always find a shoulder to lean to.I hope that everyone else out there who feel misplaced find their path to the Center and take it from there. Trust me, is not easy but there is always a way. Do not give up!
As a native Spanish speaker it is understandable that my English is not perfect. Asking if they sell flags caused them not to understand the word, having to repeat it many times. Until then, no problem.Going upstairs I heard the management people laughing out loud mentioning the word flag.As a tourist, I approached the space to get to know it. Thinking maybe they might have something on display. Or even a flag to give them money.I have a sad experience. You cant imagine how difficult it is to speak another language, enter an unknown place with fear, try to be friendly using the language of the service staff... and that in the end it was all laughter.Sad.
Ive been there to admire one of Keith Harings latest works: Once upon a time. The mural covers the entire wall of the mens bathroom on the second floor. The space is open to all and the murales, in perfect condition, can be visited freely.Making a donation is the least we can do.
The guys are doing a great job. Probably the only place where new immigrants should turn for help. When I first arrived in the USA, everything was incomprehensible. But there were so friendly and helpful people here that they helped to deal with the most basic things, such as insurance. And this is the only place where they did not try to cheat or get profit - they simply and disinterestedly helped.Support groups are another story. I met wonderful people. And the moderators are very sensitive, accurate and professional. Thanks for the great job you are doing. And how you support and help the community.

2022-08-18The LGBT center took my phone number from a voting agency and spammed me despite me never opting into their communications. It’s not only rude, it’s a violation of the federal CAN-SPAM act. Stay out of our inboxes and text messages unless we opted in to your messages

2022-08-16Have tried asking the center for help on three different occasions and have been left with no assistance. When I asked for help with counseling, I was lead down a string of emails that lead me to no one. When I was about to end up on the street, the center had no resources to provide. Gilberto told me he’d personally try to help my family find housing when we were in dire circumstances and I never heard from him again. Over half of the homeless population identifies as LGBTQIA2S+ and you don’t have anything to offer houseless queer people? Why have a giant empty office building in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Manhattan if you don’t house people or help people in the community. I called to ask about case management help today and they do not have more access or resources than a regular civilian, so I do not know why they are offering help when they are not even in a position of authority to do so. Gilberto literally told me they do not have the experience to do serious case management. Anyone can apply for benefits on HRA themselves and you need to use your money, power, and resources to directly help people, not just employee people, upkeep an office, and collect donations that queer people never see or reap the benefits from. The people that work are are unqualified and do not help. Why does this center even exist. I’d really like to know. There are literally ZERO places for queer people to actually get help, especially in one of the most diverse cities in the world. Do better. Or anything at all, honestly.

2022-09-11My dear friends, do you know that this is an act against human nature. There is an incident in the true events of history that all the same evils were found in the people of Prophet Lot, but they did not repent of this evil and Godpunishment arrived, stones was sent from the heavens and the entire nation was destroyed, arent you waiting for same punishment now?

2017-06-16LGBTQ Friendly and Positive SpaceAttended an author reading here who experienced in his youth, racism and homophobia from schoolmates and neighbours, but in maturity his attitude and tone was positive supported by a packed room of fans. The space had a stage with seats and bright lights allowing everyone a good clear view of author and interviewer. Downstairs an information lobby and cafe were open to the public.Note: two mixed gender washrooms were an intriguing experience and maybe mixed bath houses will follow this equality trend?

2022-05-18It is baffling that this center does not care to help anyone in its own community. I am not sure what the point of them is because when you really need urgent help, they’ll leave you high and dry. It is truly unacceptable that this center does nothing to provide support and safety to houseless LGBTQIA+ folks other than to recommend shelters that are abusive. If you are houseless, all they are going to do is provide unsafe/unhelpful resources and leave you to fend for yourself. Awful.

2018-06-17I had wonderful help in that place. Immigration group support was fun and so helpful. They also provide career counseling. I especially enjoy the barbecues in Williamsburg and game evenings. it’s a really awesome community which supports you and offers valuable resources.

2022-06-14It’s just a big building with a lot of conference rooms. Services to the LGBT community in need is not very good.

2021-02-06I called to ask about ACT UP and Health GAP, John Riley taught me SO much and answered ALL of my questions. I finished the call feeling SO good about making monthly donations to these organizations. Also, the Keith Haring bathroom is fantastic

2019-09-12I go there separate from my studies, but on this occasion I needed to talk to one of the staff to find out about the community centers challenges and impact. The first visit I was given business cards, but never got a reply from them. The second visit I was told that the staff normally put talking to reporters, and or students at the bottom of the to-do list. So I was given a list of numbers of other community centers to help write my report. Other than never being able to actually speak to any of the case managers, social workers, or even the referral coordinator, this Center is the best spot to unwind, cool off, relax, have a snack, latte, and maybe chat with a stranger. We all need a community so I find this location to be great, but the staff could be more helpful.

2020-01-05I love this place! The Think Coffee kiosk area is cozy. The baristas are usually cute and fun. I also love the Bookstore upstairs. The center houses many meetings groups and events for the LGBTQ community (Social,or recovery).I believe that their open 7 days a week.
