The Little Bear in other cities:
This is my favorite place to have a nice lunch or dinner in there glass solar room that over looks an beautiful bubbling brook. The atmosphere here is very relaxing. Everytime Im in the Woodstock are i stop and, eat here. They have many vegetarian options. The owner is a sweetheart. Ive eaten here many times and, always have left feeling happy.
This was a disappointment, I dont know if it should have only gotten 1 star. Here are my points, which are elaborated bellow:1. Is it closed?2. Awful seating3. Food was awful4. Service only barely ok5. No bill only a note1. So I arrived and the place looks closed but I go and grab the door. It is open, but no one greets you, and you enter a little messy room, before you get into the restaurant.2. Well the view is actually quite nice if they seated you so you could watch it. But instead of a nice view over the river, I was seared with a view to a garden that had not been kept for years it seemed, it was messy and rusty.3. The food... Well it was the first time in a long time I did not finish a meal because it tasted bad. I know I challenged the kitchen by ordering half a pineapple with duck. But what I got was way to sweat and the pineapple was stuffed with something you pull out of a freezer or a can.4. I wont say much here. They passed but barely.5. In the end when I asked for the check, I was only presented with a number, no real bill. It was a peace of paper with a number. I had no way of knowing or controlling if the number was right. Conclusion: my expectations were not met, not at all met. I had expected to find what I had heard the Cafe used to be. What I found was awful. I do not recommend it to anyone.
This unique cozy restaurant has always been my favorite in the Woodstock area. The comforting feel of the natural wood interior lends to a serene environment that provokes one to take the time to enjoy their consistantly Good Food. Not to mention the best Peking Duck anywhere
The food is a mixed bag. The duck is usually rather dry, and the desert selection is very limited, but everything else we ate was quite good. That said, if you make a reservation (and you should, its tiny) ask for a table by the windows overlooking the stream. We booked a group and got placed in a corner near where they stack extra supplies and it took any charm I used to feel about the place away entirely.Avoid anything that is listed as having mayonnaise (yeah they cover some of their dishes in it) its kinda disgusting. Even for someone that likes the stuff, they use like half a bottle and you need to dig through it to find your food. But if you get a window seat, get lucky with your menu choice, and arent looking for dessert, you have a chance of having an amazing night here. I did once a while back, but regret trying my luck twice.
Wow this place has gone down hill. Found a large green bottle fly in my chicken. Not in the sauce but rather in the chicken. The staff was very unapologetic. Manager avoided me to talk about it and I was charged full price for the food we sent back. My family didnt want to finish our food for obvious reasons. This place use to be fantastic but certainly not anymore. I want my money back.
Great American-style Chinese food for the area, and you cant beat the beautiful setting. Reasonably priced for dining in, though its definitely not a cheap take-out spot if youre looking for that (they do take-out, its just not cheap!) We love the scallion pancake, eggplant with garlic sauce and the soup with chewy rice cakes. I think its best to stick to the normal Cantonese dishes and have found that most things on the specialties menu are underwhelming and overpriced.
Just stopped by this place for lunch. Shameful ! The starters we had were so bad, we decided to cancel the meal, the waitress insisted on us staying and offered our starters for free, I told her that we were not interested to try the food further and told her the food was simply disgusting. She did not seem too bothered and did not object to my comments. We paid our starters but when we got into our car, the cookcame out, chased us, threatened to call the police, asked us not to come back, would we ever come back ???? He looked so angry and mean, and cooks truly mean disgusting food. This place is to be avoided, the food quality is beyond appalling... and the service is terrible.
The food was horrible. The shrimp in the coconut shrimp tasted rotten and when we informed the server she said we were wrong because it just arrived that day. The scallion pancake was great, but our entrees were disgusting. Orange chicken = big hunks of deep fried flour with almost no chicken and doused in a sickeningly sweet gloopy sauce. All this accompanied by a rude server and the sounds of employees screaming at each other.Steer clear of this place.
This is the best Chinese food Ive ever eaten. It is next to a stream so you can see the water running as you eat. It has a outside eating area or a sun room style dinning area. Ive been here several times. The food and service is always consistent and good. It is at the bearsville complex. So if youre going to a show it makes so convenient. But I travel from Poughkeepsie just for the food. If Im in the mood for Chinese this is where I go.
This use to be our go-to restaurant. We ate here almost weekly even though the food was moderate and the service was poor but the portions were good and the prices fair and decor very good. BUT of recent the prices went SKY HIGH the portions got small, the food got, at times, terrible and we no longer eat here. Such a shame to see a restaurant go into such a decline! Its a management problem that could be corrected and I implore them to go back to the portion sizes that they use to have, put into place a little quality control and drop their prices a bit so expectations arent so high.
Disappointing. Food was mediocre, the taste of the MSG was overpowering and didnt match description on menu and the service was only so so as well.. Also very uncomfortable teeny tiny Bathroom stalls that are built to fit children, not grown adults. If you are 5 foot 7 or taller youd probably have to sit with the door open because the space wouldnt accomodate your knees. Im 5 ft. 5 and I barely fit, ridiculous !Make sure you pee before you go or youre in for a challenge in the toilet.Ive been here before in years past and Id have to say its gone downhill since then. Also, Im surprised more ppl arent complaining about the bathroom,I thought by Law at least one toilet had to be accessible for disabled folks ?Little Bear has made more than enough profit off the community since their inception, more than enough time to bring the bathrooms up to standards.Pretty sure I wont be back there again.
My wife and I had an interesting experience. We ordered a round of the fried tofu... it was well over cooked and tasted sour and dried out at best. We ordered the Mongolian Lamb, and it was just, okay. Our waiter ignored us the entire time, except when it came to presenting us the check. Not sure what just happened...?
Ordered the thai chicken curry for take out last night with my daughter’s birthday chinese dinner request. thought i would try something new & was craving a bit of spice & coconut milk. initially when taking it out of the bag thought we had received hot & sour soup as a mistake. the dish was gelatinous. not a single recognizable vegetable out of the few that may have been in the container. it was literally a dull orange slime with a bit of chicken. gave it a go as it may have just been something i was unfamiliar with. wish i hadn’t. never again. little bear is that restaurant we keep hoping is going to prove our previous experiences wrong. all in all we will stick to chinese in kingston & thai in rhinebeck. so incredibly disappointed.
We went In and sat down. The waitress filled our water glasses and walked away. We then noticed that every glass had lipstick remains around the tops. We looked at the glasses on the empty tables around us and they were all dirty like that. When we got up to leave, we let the waitress know about it and she didnt seem to care. We wont go back there.
Its really too bad its some of the worst service in the Woodstock area. The food is ok, but…On a date with my fiancé recently, my food arrived 10 minutes before hers, by the time her food arrived, mine was cold. My beer glass was dirty.Last summer, I witnessed a waitress cleaning a table outside with the left over water from a glass a client had not finished. Lovely. Not friendly waitressing staff is fine, rude is something else. Vote with your dollars, dont go there.
6 pm and its a hot night. No AC, good thing the hosts of the UCWN brought some of their own fans! We were served family style, sauted vegetables, cous-cous and beef, lamb and chicken kebobs. Personally I never tasted any lamb but everything was very tasty and the meats were tender. Nice space, worth a try to see what the regular menu is like.
Just down the road from the heart of Woodstock, The Little Bear is located on a scenic brookside property that contains a saloon, theatre and other outbuildings.Delicious and reasonable-priced food with attentive service, this longstanding restaurant has served our family for decades. After dinner, sit outside around the fire pit.

2021-09-22The best Chinese restaurant Ive ever eaten at. The Peking Duck is awesome, the sesame noodles are extraordinary and the beef with orange sauce is amazing. Then, of course, theres Marlee, the owner, who is a great hostess and wonderful human being.

2019-08-24We have loved the Little Bear for over 30 years, from its start in Bradleys Meadow as the First Wok. We know that the real estate situation at the Bearsville Complex has been stressful, and we hope it is resolved soon. I would have given 5 stars at any time in the last 30+ years, which is important. Unfortunately the chef tonight didnt deliver on the light touch and delicate sauces that we have grown to love there. I know Marley and her team can get it back on track. The Crispy Prawns and Half and Half we definitely now your normal quality. We will be back.

2021-05-30Unfortunately the lovely view and fantastic location could not make up for what should have been a much tastier meal. After reading other reviews we were excited to visit. Looks like we may have come on an off night as others have commented about how tasty their meals were. Cold sesame noodles...No flavor. Soft shell crab...possibly not fresh and over fried with too much batter. General Tso’s Chicken...pretty basic. Orange Chicken..again pretty basic. Shredded pork...basic and safe. Even the Pan fried noodles.....Hoping this was just a one off. And that others have better luck.

2021-08-16Oh man! First, what a cool place! First time there. Just love the setting. Bar, dining room at the end, patio by the stream. Whoa. Ok, the food: Im not very adventurous when it comes to food. I know what I like. Gen. Tsos seems to be a good, gold standard for me. Well, this was the BEST I have EVER had. ANYWHERE. Actual chicken involved! Pork fried rice also had actual pieces of pork in it! Beef lo mein was similarly delicious. Eddie the bartender was great company and a superb tender of the bar. Drinks were tasty. Id give this place 10 stars if I could. And like so many other reviews below, I cant wait to go back!!!

2018-10-17As we were seated, we were happy to see that there were only two other couples dining and we were able to have a window seat by the creek. Waitress took our order ( forgot to ask if we wanted any type of drink ). My girlfriends food was horrendous and my plate was mediocre at best...I had to go to the bar to order two drinks.Waitress never checked on us, as she stood at the upper steps and stayed on her phone. Terrible service, mediocre food... yet great ambiance... go figure!

2020-11-22Well, this is a Chinese restaurant that is been in Woodstock for a long time. Have not been there in about 3 years. So the wife and I arrive, sit down, not many people in the restaurant because of Covid. Virus protocols are always in effect. Ordered appetizers and a whole fried sea bass for two. Appetizers came in the normal amount of time. Tasty. We then waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. Because once they removed the empty appetizer plates the other food just wasnt coming. No one came over to us.After 45 minutes I called over the waitress. Complained. She says, Yes its taking awhile. The fish was frozen and they had to defrost it and then cook.WHAT?I also strongly advised that its bad business not to tell customers of delays.Another 15 minutes passed so...an hour. Food arrived. Was good. Large fish. Pretty too.The bill arrived. The menu said the fish was $45. Were charged $60.Again call over the waitress.Ask the question. She said, Well, it was a large fish so we have to charge more.Uhh...the menu says $45. You never told us about a change in prices, so its 45!We go back-and-forth...they wanted $60! She finally lowers to the menu price. And thats why I gave it one star. Bad service and unorganized.

2019-10-01I’ve been going to this restaurant for 35 years. The food has been absolutely consistent all this time. I now travel 35 miles; past 3 other Chinese food restaurants to get here. Everything is freshly prepared and delicious. The mustard is hot (to die for). Half the restaurant looks out on the Sawkill creek. It’s a comfortable, serene place to eat.

2019-09-18Great views and, atmosphere. The owner and, staff are very friendly. They have excellent vegetarian choices and, many many options for a healthy lunch or dinner. They have an amazing sunroom in the back that faces a little babbling brook with little waterfalls. They also have a bar if you like that sort of thing. Its such an relaxing place to have an night out with a few good friends. This is always my favorite place to go to when Im up in Woodstock. Ive been coming here for many years and, always had an positive experience here.

2020-02-05This place is my favored. I go to plenty of restaurants but to this restaurant I constantly return again and again. The stuff is very friendly and the cuisine they place on your table is so yummy. I never decline to have a decent dinner here. I recommend this place with pleasure.
