Terrible HR and home health. I would absolutely not send a family member or friend to this center. I have 10+ years of experience and the HR coordinator skipped scheduled interviews and ignored all forms of correspondence. Poor communication & proper care for loved ones.
I had The New Jewish Home for home health care after a surgery involving breaking my tibia and fibula. They were wonderful!!! I had two of their physical therapists, Frank and Mitali Vyas - both were exceptional. The nurse, Jasmine, was a God send for me. She went above and beyond for me. Joey was the coordinator for the home health aides - he always kept me informed and worked very hard to get a vaccinated aide for me. And a special thank you to Shalitris, who also went above and beyond for me in dealing, repeatedly, with my primary in trying to get proper documentation for me. I really dont think any other agency wouldve worked this hard for me. This team is golden. I really felt cared for. I would whole heartedly recommend this agency for home health care.
The New Jewish home covid unit is a horrible place. The facility does not provide quality care/ No doctor on premises. Incompetent and unprofessional staff. Patients are not treated with dignity. Malnutrition, dehydration, kept dirty. This place is a nightmare! Keep your loved one away from this death trap place! People lie to you. They are interested in your money. We had to fight our loved one out of the place. They insisted to keep the person.
Temporary Care Review: Very Poor care, PLEASE if your insurance gives you other options, look into them. This was the recommended facility for us, my mother stayed here for 3 weeks post-stroke. She was supposed to receive two sessions of PT and OT everyday to regain her ability to walk but she only got one brief session a day and sometimes none. Nurses were rude and unresponsive when I brought up her lack of care, and told me she was getting PT and OT twice a day ( although she wasnt.) My mother is highly disabled and needs oxygen at night; this facility was supposed to place her in an oxygen mask every night ( this is what caused her stroke) but over the course of 3 weeks she received oxygen twice. After multiple attempts to get to the bottom of this, the supervisor told me he would insure she would get oxygen at night- but nothing changed throughout the 3 weeks. This facility is dirty, old, and extremely uncomfortable as a guest OR as a patient. I continuously complained to supervisors, and staff about the lack of care my mother received, and was assured that she would be taken care of. 3 weeks later, she is released with NO change in her functioning, she is actually less capable than when she was admitted. She was confined to a bed 24/7 and was given terrible care. If your thinking of sending a loved one here, they are better off at home. If your able to get care in another facility, As a family member of a patient, I HIGHLY recommend seeking other care.
What is most important in an institution is the quality of care, and that is where The New Jewish Home excels and why my nearly 103 year-old mother has been a contented resident for a year and a half. She is clean, comfortable and cheerful despite the many deficits of her extreme age. Yes, it is an old building, but one that is kept clean and brightened everywhere by decorative details. There is a friendly attitude among staff, a rich cultural and arts program for those who are able to participate, and a beautiful courtyard garden. Most importantly, however, are the well-trained, well-supervised personnel who do a very difficult job really well. The rehab people are first rate-- upbeat, patient, and encouraging. Virtually all of the aides who have principal responsibility for my mother treat her with gentle respect. The medical staff have saved her life twice —pneumonia and a blood clot—and keep me informed of her condition. The religious services are moving and welcoming. I rest easy knowing that my mother, whose needs could no longer be met at home or with family, is looked after by skilled, caring people at The Jewish Home.
My mother was a resident here over 20 years ago. Ive also had friends who were patients here. My rehab has been excellent. The staff is very attentive. They make sure the patient gets proper rehab to strengthen their bones. I feel there is good team work between PT/OT and nursing in terms of communications and they are very caring. I would definitely recommend having rehab services here.
I have been working at the New Jewish Home for two years as a MJHS hospice volunteer! I have spent a great deal of time interacting with patients and staff. I was impressed with the love and attentiveness the staff exhibited with patients. They often come into a room with a cheery smile and hello, asking patients how they felt. They have also been extremely supportive of my visits by moving wheelchairs and tables to maximize my proximity to my patients. They have even moved chairs so I could comfortably sit beside the patient in the lounges. I have always felt that the staff considered me a supportive colleague and welcomed me with open arms. This facility deserves NO STARS. If you truly care for your love one, scratch this place off your list. I trusted the Social worker from the hospital my mother was released from, foolish me. She gave this place a great review. I lived out of state and was trying to get back to NY before my mother was released from the hospital. My mother was place atThe New Jewish Home and was there for only 2 weeks and I got her out. My mother’s metal and physical health started to decline rapidly less than a week of being there and she stopped speaking and eating. I was glad I had the time to be there everyday until she was transferred. I would wait PATIENTLY each day until someone would come in her room to clean, bathe her and change the sheets to NO AVAIL so I did it myself EACH day and right before I left at night. Only to arrive at the facility about 7am to find my mother in a soiled nightgown & bedding so that translates to NO ONE BOTHERED TO CHECK ON HER THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT. In 2 weeks her room was swept and mopped only twice. My heart broke each day I went there and each time I left. The doctor only saw my mother once while I was there. Mind you, I was there from 7am til 9pm EVERYDAY!!! This facility needs a MAJOR OVERHAUL!! Facility smells and is not clean. Staff tends to be rude and they are always short handed . This is a NON-CARING FACILITY. If you don’t care about the patients, it becomes about a job and a paycheck and for management becomes all about the dollars. How sad! Especially when you have those who can’t care for themselves. If I was able to have had my mother moved faster I would have. I feel sad for those in there with no voice as well as those who do not have someone to watch out for their well-being. One day in this place is too long. The day my mother was transported out of there felt like a new lease on life for my mother and I was able to truly breathe again. The only positive thing I can actually say is that the social workers were great in their efforts to get me the necessary documents filled out and needed for an expedient exodus.
A little overwhelmed, but trying hard. I see many people seem to have overly high expectations for what is a tough job, often underfunded and a set of jobs that are human based & high in burnout. My Mother was there for rehab after a foot operation, and a couple of people dropped the ball from time to time, but overall the PT was pretty good, the nurses work so hard, are often overwhelmed with work to do, etc. People seem to expect 24/7 oversight. Thats not going to happen, and the nurses I met were caring and doing their best. The more you advocate for your patient, the better the care. Considering where it is, and that its often full to the brim, its pretty clean, its a pretty nice atmosphere. The food is not too bad. Id love to see some of the people complaining to try and work there at any of those jobs, and then come tell me how terrible the place is. This industry is full of real snakes in the grass. This place is doing their best with what they have to work with. This is not a hotel. Its a rehab and the PT people do a good job.
Very happy with this facility. They pay attention to the patients. My sister is there, after having bad experiences with other places. She gets good physical therapy, speech and occupational therapy. Besides the nursing staff being compassionate, attentive and patient, other employees there are also very helpful. Social work dept employees are very helpful as well.
Dont let the positive reviews fool you. They were probably written by a staff member there. Anyways, theyre short staffed and dont clean the patients until after the afternoon. My mother told the staff and the nutritionist that she was allergic to fish and doesnt eat meat, yet they bring her fish and/or meat meals every single day! So aside from Medicaid paying for the cost of stay, I still have to prepare her meals otherwise, she may get a severe allergic reaction. Honestly, I get business is business and the ones staying there paying out of pocket may be treated better than those whose insurance is paying but con!!! Enough is enough! They need to get organized, hire a few more assistants, start being more sympathetic, and listen to their patients. The two ladies whove stayed next to my mother during the past month also told me the neglection they have gone through. I knew I should have transferred her since the first day when I asked for a chair because there was none in her room and the assistant told me rudely that she had to go to lunch and couldnt attend me right now although all I asked her was if I could take the chair located right outside of the room. I would NOT recommend this place unless you want your relative to be neglected.
They gave my dad whos a diabetic his insulin 45 min AFTER he ate. Also took a year and a day to get him into his bed. Most nurses had attitude. Have more text messages to the head nurses than anyone else I deal with! Only thing that was good was the therapy and building is nice. Otherwise you have to be on top of nurses and dietitian to get things correct.
First of all, this whole rehabilitation home business is a pimp game, because not every elder needs it after coming out of the hospital. The patients and families are convinced that rehabilitation is necessary for a full recovery. (Why arent my elderly family members who come out of the hospitals with the same conditions, outside of NYC, required to stay at a rehabilitation home? ) Its just another money game in this city. Im so angry that we fell for it.Anyway, Jewish Healthcare seems to be in cahoots with all the hospitals in the area. They were highly recommended by the hospital. Unfortunately we made the mistake of assuming that the name and location of the facility qualify it as top notch. Wrong!At first the facility seemed legit; they rolled out the red carpet for my mother-in-law on the first day, providing her with personalized care and a great meal. But after being there for four weeks, my mother-in-law tells a story of neglect, rudeness and skimpy meals. It took them almost 1 1/2 weeks to repair her phone and replace the batteries in her TV remote. Plus, during this time there were instances when we couldnt get a live nurse or attendant on the phone. My mother-in-law must have lost ten pounds while she was there and she just wasnt herself. When we asked her why she didnt complain or at least tell us how bad she was feeling, she alluded to being treated more badly by the staff when she did. And to add insult to injury, they tried to convince us that she needed to stay there longer if not permanently.Dont let the location and predisposed attitudes fool you. This is not a good facility for you loved one.
In my prior post, admittedly, and with reason, I was frustrated by my inability to reach my Mom who was just admitted to The New Jewish Home. Clearly the encounter I had and response I received from reception was an outlier and in no way fully represents the caring professionals (all the way up to senior management) I met and the level of attentiveness and care my Mother has been receiving.It was only fair that I update my review because the ineptness of the receptionists was only a shadow of TNJH, and does not in any way, as I am learning, represents the full organization. I hope that those persons who handle the first interface for the public will realize what an impression they are leaving and will change their ways.Very grateful for all the persons Ive spoken with and met who thought my complaint was worth addressing and correcting.
I loved my experience as an intern for The New Jewish Home. I had the opportunity to work with the development team, and I learned so much about nonprofit development and health care in New York City.
My husband arrived Monday evening after a 3 week stay at Rusk Institute. These comments are not in comparison to Rusk because I understand it is a very different facility.My husband suffered a severe stroke that affected cognition and speech. Despite the reports and communications from Rusk before arriving, he was assigned a room at the very end of a long hallway far from the nurses station. I was given assurance that night that he would be adequately supervised and moving him would be a priority.The next morning I arrived and found my husband sitting on a chair in his room, no sheets on the bed, very dirty floors and a pair of pants (not his) full of feces in his closet.Today is Thursday and he still has not been moved. It seems there are many empty private rooms for which one has to pay an additional $23 per day. I have seen them on the sub-acute floors. When I arrived today (late afternoon) the room was filthy, two garbage cans full of paper towels etc. drenched in urine.I went down to the administrative floor to speak to the nurse manager and after she was called I was told she was busy but would come upstairs in a few minutes. It is now appx 1 hour later and she is now gone for the day.The daughter of my husbands roommate tells me he often sits for long periods of time in his urine and feces bc since he also has communication problems, no one pays attention.My mother was here years ago in an Alzheimers unit and it was horrific. I had her transferred to Isabella. I was told that this place had changed dramatically which is why they are now The New Jewish Home. Proximity to home and their speech therapy program (better than many) is why we are here.My husband is a professor at Columbia and I have involved their HR dept which has been incredibly helpful throughout this process.I will write a review everyday if necessary until this situation changes.My heart goes out to those who cannot advocate for themselves.
When my husband came to the Jewish Home he could not speak, and swallow food and liquid. His speech and swallowing therapist Katie was excellent. Now he is able to swallow and eat puréed foods. Karen the RN and his aide Sharon Is wonderful. His PT/OT Karen is also great. They take very good care of my husband. Eric the nurse manager is really nice, he has been very good to us and helpful.
My husband has Parkinsons/dementia. He is now on a longterm floor, is safe and seems to be content. The homes best features are the outdoor garden, indoor bird-scape, and recreational programs. Without 1:1 attention from me or a private duty nurse I pay out-of-pocket, he would be left sitting at the table in his dayroom, and seldom get to enjoy any of these.For his first 3 months, he was on a shot term floor and suffered numerable falls, cuts and bruises due to understaffing and/or careless staffers who hate their jobs. I believe most staffers care about the patients and do their best despite overwork and a constant struggle for supplies. A few cleaners are marvelous, but many appear to hate their jobs. The public restrooms are usually dirty, low on soap and paper products. Patient areas are usually too cold or too hot. Last week, the room thermometer I placed by my husbands bed read 90º. On another floor, I was told an adult daughter put sleeping caps and scarves on her mother to keep her warm, in bed.
I should have put up my review sooner. Took my Mom their recommended by Mt Sinia Hospital .My Plan with the Dr was to give a month of rehab at this facility to get her strength back after have 8 hr operation on her leg bypass surgery due to poor circulation. Then return her to Mt Sinia to complete the bypass surgery which they where not able to compleat with the 1st bypass surgery. Well my only problem there house Dr and nursing staff need to get it Right no wound speaclist. My Mom leg suffered from this. I was there everyday keeping my eyes on things. One afternoon I got there 3pm I had errands to do in the am I found her in room door closed she was screaming in pain delirious and naked.I went to the nursing staff and told them have you lost your minds. She needed to be transferred back to Mt Sinia.This is no way to ignore a patient in pain and semi-comatose.The nurses where relieved that I took action. There is a silent rule that administration has a policy patients are not to be transferred out of the facility I could see how eager the staff was willing to do the right thing once I demanded it. I also made sure that the transfer request was coming from the facility not by my request because Medicare wouldnt cover her bills at Mount Sinai if I removed her on my own. They also did it the right way so that medicare continued without interruption. What a learning experience. Here is something to think about. 1) never leave a love one unattended. 2) Family members should take turns staying with the patient 24 seven. I choose this place because they said I could stay 24/7 with my Mom if I like to. I am a registered nurse for 37 yrs and the staff knew it. They were nice with me we where in the same click and this still happened.My Mom and I went in an ambulance back to Mt Sinai and spent 24hr in the ER they didnt have a room for her and they put her in an isolation room due to her screaming. Mt Sinia is not the same place as when I worked there at the start of my nursing career. My mom died 4 days later. They also attempted to move her to a palliative floor without my permission. A day later I then agreed. There they tried to give her morphine in her mouth when she wasnt showing she needed it another silent form of practicing eu·tha·na·sia. It is a message how rehab doesnt transfer a patient to a hospital when there condition changes and requires a Hospital due to losing money and a hospital that trying to save cost by transferring without permission to a palliative floor to save money. Once you agree to a palliative floor and sign you cant return to the medical floor you where on even though the palliative care floor is in the same hospital Medicaid wont pay for it. They entice you to transfer by saying nursing staff is better trained and have more time to care for the patient remember eu·tha·na·sia also they give you a room private looking out to Central Park a frig a cot to sleep on and free cable. When I told nurses coming in to give my mom morphine that she didnt need at the time. I ask the nurse does my mom look like she is in pain they said no she doesnt they would leave then they would send in a different nurse to attempt to give her morphine and again she didnt need it yet.this happened 3 times then the head of the floor director came and said we need to have a family meeting I informed him I am all you need to discuss my Mom affairs. He then told me she can only stay on this palliative care floor for 1 week then she has to go home or a hospice. I told him you sweetened how wonderful her coming to this unit would be plus all the other things. Private room, Free TV, Nice view of Central Park Etc but forgot to mention the small print about only a week stay. Again because I got in the way of eu·tha·na·sia .Sinia wanted to get rid of my mom cause they lose money and wanted to get off the floor to palliative care because it not considered part of the hospital.well they fooled me and Im a nurse. I been in the community working and things have changed in hospitals. In the name of the dollar. I hope this Help
Where can I start. My mother arrived to this highly recommended facility only to be neglected daily, and has now ended up in the ICU. It was my daughter and I (13yrs old) that had to come there and shower my mother every other day. The nurses and aides are VERY LAZY AND NEGLECTFUL AND NEED AN IMMEDIATE INSERVICE OR TRANSFER.It is absolutely ridiculous that the nurses and aides are never to be found. And when I brought the issues up to the head nurse, she told me in a very nasty tone that Thats not true. Your mother gets showered twice a week but she couldnt find any record of it.The biggest issue at hand is that I had to call the nurse practitioners and doctors daily to check on my mom because she started feeling shortness of breath while there, and they did nothing for her but give her random drugs which made things worse. Theyre daily response was: She looks fine. Shes walking around just fineLong story short, I left work early one day and popped up on my mom because I knew something was wrong, only to find her on oxygen and in distress.After three hours of trying to find a nurse supervisor to discharge my mother to the ER, they FINALLY got it together and called the ambulette.Unfortunately my mother sat in this place breathless for too long and its a shame that we had to experience all of this.If you truly are a humanitarian and love your family member, DO NOT TRUST THIS FACILITY WITH YOUR LOVED ONES LIFE. PLEASE!
Be warn, this place is a nightmare. I had to hire outside help to come each day and sterilize the room because it was so dirty. The social worker should find another job. the staff smiles..occasionally. When they want to get around to helping you they do...many hours later. Anyone can walk into this center and go in an elevator and walk down any hallway or stairwell. NO security. It is old, smelly, gross, dirty and if you think you are sending a loved one to be rehabilitated please be aware that they may get sick again as was the case with my family member. When he got sick and complained of pain in the back (only to find out it was a kidney stone with kidney infection) it took hours for the Doctor to give an antibiotic and told us if we left to go to emergency ,,,,we would lose our bed. Board of Trustees should be embarassed to be part of this facility. Shame on you
Terrible. It is unfortunate that you have to fear leaving a loved one in a nursing home. The most terrifying thought is that I dont believe any other nursing home would be better. For the most part if you have to leave your loved one at the Jewish Nursing Home make sure you leave them with a phone because no one will answer the phone. Secondly bring some cleaning supplies you will also have to act as your own housekeeping staff. I dont understand why doctors and nursing work at these places when they know they dont want to. The bedside manner is awful. If you have special dietary needs forget about that too, one menu fits all. Leave your loved ones there at their own risk.
Ive been to the Jewish Home several times. I always request to come here because the quality of care is excellent. The staff is professional and sensitive to my needs. The food is healthy and plentiful. The gym is well equipped, with state of the art equipment, I go twice a day. I am always well taken care of.
Post hospitalization, my husband , who was unable to speak up at first, suffered some neglect. At one shift one or two aides just didnt care and the able doctor, nurse manager and OT and PT staff were made to look bad. No one should have to wait hours for aid to help when bathroom needs have to be attended to, if the patient cant (at first) speak up for them self. Speak up, but realize many good people work in this field.On second admission, my husband suffered grossly from neglect. The floor nurse was filling in for mostly absent doctor. He suffered.I am so sorry he stayed there. Call an ambulance, and get to an emergency room. If you are lucky, dont need much care, there is a garden, library and cafe, pastoral care if wanted.The dietician will fine tune patient needs. doctor is on the floor every day, and listened.Update: second rehab, see above.
There was an overpowering stench of urine every time I walked through this unclean facility to visit my sister during a week long period of time. Overall, I found the New Jewish Home, Manhattan Campus, to be appalling and repugnant. Among its problems, which are too numerous to list, the staff was non-attentive and failed to perform critical/essential duties such as hooking up nutrition to my sisters IV and unclogging and changing her tracheostomy tube on a regular basis. My sisters partner chose this facility. If the decision had been mine, however, I would have chosen a different facility altogether.
Make no mistake about it it. This is a money-making operation. Ask a lot of questions before leaving a loved one here. Even if youre admitted for re-hab after a hospital stay on Medicare, there is a charge for telephone, a charge for TV and if you need a private room, a daily charge. When my spouses 100 days of coverage ended, the therapists decided he was not ready to go home so his release was postponed. I was then presented with a bill for over $6,000 for 12 days of room and board. They never got the food and medicine issues quite right and VNS was not advised of his release so they could visit the next day as required, to discuss home therapy and aides visits.
LITERALLY just now I got off the phone with the receptionist who told me that after seven times attempting to reach my Mom who was brought in the day before, that nurses are too busy to answer the phones.When I pressed her more to ask if she could really believe thats acceptable practice and response, she said, no one sits there to answer the phones when patients need to be attended to.She didnt care that I was calling from out of the country and had s six-hour time difference or that I had called seven times already that day.I will definitely have to make other arrangements for my mother when I return home.When the hell did people in what is supposed to be a caring profession lose the ability to care?
I was here on two separate occasions and the second stay was the worse and when I was discharged from here my family had to call 911 to take me straight to the ER cause I was worse than I was when I was admitted to the facility. The day staff was good but the night staff was the total worse and just didnt give a damn about the patients. I will never go back here again. I would ring the bell at 1am for assistance and the CNA would say she was coming back and wouldn’t return until 5 am and say she had 16 others patients to care for. By then she had extra work to do as she had to clean up the floor as I was not lying in a wet pamper. The PT Dept wasn’t able to get me where I needed to be and informed my insurance company that I would never walk again well they lied lied lied lied. After my Hospital stay I went to another Rehabilitation center and I am Walking Walking Walking again. I hope and pray I never have to go back to rehab but if I do it surely won’t be this place. The EMS staff who took me to the hospital told my family to take pictures of my body and SUE the Jewish Home for neglect. If you had medical appointments you had to have your family member take you as they would not provide transportation for you or even request your insurance company to cover the cost. The other nursing home I went to was Citadal in the BX and they always provided an escort and contacted the insurance company for approval of the ambulance service to take you to your appointments and back.Please search for another facility before sending your loved ones here. This is only based on my stay and care I received from the facility you can judge for yourself and other ppl experiences.
No air conditioner or central air at all. They don’t care if they kill staff and patients as long as they get their money by cutting down on everything from supply shortage like linen and diapers to shutting off hot water all night. That’s why they got multiple lawsuits.
Pathetic. Frustrating. Ridiculous.Im currently in a wheelchair. I was in the hospital for two weeks, in the Mamaroneck Sarah Newman/Jewish Home rehab for four. I was told by the rehab social worker that I would get an aide to help me bathe, do the things necessary at home. I was also told that I would be getting physical therapy. She thought it would start maybe Tuesday after a Friday night release.Well, Ive been home about a week and although Ive seen a nurse twice (who recommended almost daily help and multiple pt visits) and a social worker, no one has been by to actually physically help me to get better or with day to day living. And everyone says its the system or its insurance or its...... someone elses fault. My one time approved pt visit is scheduled for 5:30 Friday night because its convenient after the therapist leaves her full time job nearby. Like thats the time I will get the most out of my workout because Im so fresh and full of energy.So I havent had a shower in a week. Im heating prepared food in a microwave on paper plates. I try to do some exercises on my own. I had to send out laundry because I had no more clean clothes. I ask help from others to put out the garbage because I physically cant.(The rehab center was fine with some very dedicated people and their PT people excellent. This review is for the homecare portion.)
I’m in this place right now for over a week , I had a full hip replacement . I have not slept . The second and third shift is a series from hell’s kitchen . Other patients and myself are being neglected . The lady across from me screaming because she has a rash and staff don’t change her when needed . They laugh at her and suck their teeth at her . That’s very upsetting for the rest of us cause she screaming for very long periods of times . I spilled my water and my wife went to get housekeeping and they told her no housekeeping at this time and gave her one small towel . They went as far as turning off my call button . I have made numerous complaint against the staff and it’s like they running an asylum. Please don’t send your loved one here . I have been outta my room to make several complaints to Administration it’s like nothing get done . People earning free paychecks . Most of them sit in the physical therapy room to chit chat most of the night . Then you have your two percent of staff that actually work and they know who they are . The third floor is horrible . Dr . Zewdu came to my room I explained I was having muscles spasms he told me he be right back that was Friday today is Monday he still not come . He happens to walk by my room I explain once again he said he be back once again and sucked his teeth . I was talking to him he walked outta my room and ignored me like I’m a child . They have cameras everywhere why no one is seeing what going on here . I have multiple videos of this chaos .
If you LOVE your family member run from this place... The staff is very dishonest, not helpful and very inconsiderate. My grandmother was in this facility for over six weeks and was discharged because she was admitted to the hospital due to lack of medical treatment and care. In other words, she was neglected in every way possible. During her stay the only time she was showered was when a family member came to assist her. My grandmother was undergoing radiation for five weeks and in that time her skin was freshly exposed (raw skin) and because they ran out of supplies they used gauze to cover the burn only allowing the gauze to get stuck to her raw skin. Needless to say it was the most painful experience my poor grandmother had endured during her whole cancer phase. She was treated like an animal and I can only hope and pray that those who had anything to do with my grandmothers case never experience what she experiened because I wouldnt wish this type of treatment to my worst enemy.
This is my first experience dealing with such a facility. Individually, the workers are nice. Too many questions some nurses become annoyed. My first negative experience was 3days in and they had no clue of the follow-up doctor appointments given their patient who went from the hospital to their facility. They do not follow directions. I believe because Each group do not know what the other group is doing or not doing! They couldn’t tell me if a certain medicine was given on the night shift that left about an hour prior the question. Doctors notes do not take priority to be inputed in their systems, so changes can take place immediately. Changes in medicine caused a reoccurrence in the reason for being there in the first place. Second request for changing medicine, there is no concrete documentation as to why. Just words - which to me is an opinion unless you have numbers to prove the thought. Proof was not produced. I will be requesting the bill from Medicaid or care whichever one we have and the bill from our secondary insurance. I will comb that bill. Because, again there is a prescription for the med-fast 2x daily. We have only received it 1x a day for 2 days! And we have been here a little over 2 weeks, no med-fast; but it is on the fact sheet!
When I first arrived I was very nervous I was on the (Second Floor )I didn’t know how the staff would treat me 😑 . My CNA was so kind ,loving and doing a good with me !! The Nurses have a hard job trying there best to give everyone there Meds on time . I had a knee replacement surgery so need I say more #pain . It’s this one person name Donna she do a lot of things on the floor one of the is to arrange transportation for out patients appointment well the company she had to pick me up from my appointment did a bad job that day but Donna had me on the phone while they send someone else to pick me up !! I was so scared and she made me fill so safe the whole time and didn’t hung up the phone until they Arrive thank you so much Donna . Pt was good but house keeping need some improvement or a class on how to clean rooms ok . How come he just walk in and get the garbage and that’s all he do smh I had to tell him to clean the toilet sink and mop up bathroom and the floor were I sleep at !! This is crazy so please teach him his job description please . But overall you guys got a 10 from me ❤️❤️❤️
The two stars are for first: Location - W. 106th Street was convenient to get to by Mass Transit - and second for some (and I emphasize some) of the staff. Unfortunately, they are not the ones in charge of your loved ones care. If your loved one is here get used to doctors not returning your calls, social workers not returning your calls, nurses not returning your calls, nurses aides not answering the call bell to help those need help in going to use the bathroom, or giving showers, physical and occupational therapists not attending meetings and no one really talking to either you (even if you have the heatlh proxy) or each other. Oh, and lets not talk about the food. The best that can be said - they didnt kill her.
As a caregiver to my Uncle since 2015, I was confronted with a major fall in his apartment on 43rd and 9th in August 2018. We needed to find him a Rehabilitation facility / home after Mt. Sinai. We found The New Jewish Home and we were blessed. It takes work, family support and an understanding of your love ones needs. Whether they be additional health issues, current real health issues, extended family support, living friends ( my Uncle was 85), his personality or his ability to tell caregivers and healthcare workers how he was feeling - was key. Being there for him was huge! Not everyone can do - but you need to weigh these things in your journey. For me it was clear...his best bet was to do the rehabilitation and be successful. Working with Barbara and Yvonne, his original PT and OT was a huge blessing and advantage. They gave 200% effort, patience, love and support to his care and became his friend, my friend and we were a TEAM! Just like his floor doctor, nurses, CNAs, his social worker and his roommates - in time we all became his TEAM! It takes time and it take love, a sense of humor, hope and trying over and over The team at Jewish Home never gave up and they helped me forge ahead week after week. Being a long distance caregiver it was a challenge for me but they helped me feel like a never had to leave to go home to my family from a break! That made/makes me smile. I wasnt deterred by the fact that they are waiting on construction of a new campus in Manhattan - I was fortified by their emphasis in keeping my Uncle clean, feed, clothed and always putting a smile on our face! I cant say enough about everyone as a TEAM...its always more than just one person it takes a community of healthcare, whether its a hospital or a rehab and ultimately his nursing home away from home! He always said to me: these are my girls; he felt their tremendous love and care...he always said: this is a good place and he said: they work hard. And yes, they all do with a smile. Sure every now and then like any other home there are stresses - but we overcame then by looking beyond our noses and keeping focused on the long term. We both love the New Jewish Home and we were part of their family! L love their people and their mission. The café is great too - by the way! The patient or the residence food is no that bad either :-) !! Although I probably put on some weight! Bottom line - there are not many wonderful and beautiful homes for the elderly in Manhattan - and there should be more home away from home like the Jewish Home on 106 and Amsterdam. It wasnt far from Hells Kitchen or from Boston for that matter - but we always felt at HOME. Thank you from our hearts! JBourke and James Galvin
I was shocked at all the negative reviews.I was there in 2017 after a devastating car accident, subsequent cardiac arrest and terrible care in 2 prestigious medical centers in Conn.When I was admitted to TNJH for possible rehab, several doctors thought I might not walk again.At YNHMC my husband was told by the social worker that I would either die or be a quadrapeligic.At that same Institution , I received 2 decubiti, one so deep that my doctors feared it would go to the bone.I received excellent wound care from Dr.Torina of Mt.Sinai and it healed in 9 months .At TNJH Ms.Sussama NP was in charge of that wound and my nurses were directed to do wound care twice a day.My night nurse Linda always asked me what time would I like the dressing changed and apologized if she was a little late.My CNA Norma on the evening shift always hid a special diaper cream in my drawer so my sacral bed sore would heal. My CNAs went to other floors to find the right size diapers.Ms.Grandison R.N. made special efforts to see that I had Attarax in my med drawer from the outside pharmacy.Mr.Petaud LPN helped the CNAs get me into the wheel chair.But my best angel was Cheryl Blake CNA.I remember clinging to her for dear life the first time I stood.Barbara my PT sat with me for 20 minutes the first time I used the bathroom.And Yvon SCHRIBER OT serenaded me with Shimmy Shimmy Cococo pop the first time I sat on the edge of the bed.Yes I saw the mice in the gym and the rats in the garden and the hole in the wall by the exit door but the cleaning people always wished me good morning every morning .My bathroom was spotless and no staff members used it for their own use as the staff in Conn. did.Yes Dr.Zewdu was surly.PCP Dr.Carol Horowitz of Mt. Sinai reported him to the Medical board for not returning her calls.Karen the day nurse was a bit snippy but she saw that I got my pain meds and my dressings changed on time.I would not be walking today and back home were it not for the staff of TNJH.
Although the staff is very caring, there is a shortage of staff on some floors of the facility. My mother-in-law is a 96 yr old resident who suffers from alzheimers. Although she is able to feed herself, her mobility has lessened dramatically. She is very confused and does not understand the simplest instructions. Are there plans to hire more staff at this facility?
This place is really horrible, my step mom has been here for a few days in the rehab unit. Her roommate seems to have severe dementia and screens all day and all night and my stepmom has not been on able to get any sleep or rest. We have requested that she get put in a different room but no response yet from staff, she’s been here now several days and she still hasn’t had any rehabilitation.
I came to The New Jewish Home in May for a tour and decided it was my first choice; I was deciding amongst 3 other homes. The best thing about my stay is my roommate, the therapy team and nurses. I recommend the Manhattan location, it exceeded my expectations. Visits from Client Experience Officer are fun too.
I writing this review in regards to the Physical Therapists and the Occupational Therapists here at The Jewish Home. I have been here for three weeks and have not only improved my situation but I have learned a lot from them. They are compassionate, caring, and motivating. I have built such a great relationship with both my Physical Therapists Jiten and Mary, as well as my Occupational Therapist Tahlia.They have been instrumental in my recovery considering I was very down about my injury and brought me in the gym pushed me to my potential and showed me that there is no reason to feel down because no matter how bad it may seem with a little strength and help from wonderful people like them it can be great!! Im so grateful for the help I received from them and will forever remember them.So thank you!
When I came to the Jewish Home I could not speak. They did a great job with my speech therapy, now I can speak well. The staff here is very good. I really enjoy the rehab services. I am happy that I am recovering very quickly.
Aside from good PT avoid this place if you care for your family members. Social Workers DO NOT CARE OR FOLLOW UP on needed items for a successful discharge.I would give this place NEGATIVE STARS IF POSSIBLEMedical staff do not consider a stage 4 pressure sore significantThe food served looks disgusting and tastes very poor. Facility is clean but very very run down.Staff shortages appear to quite prevalent.
I was a patient at the New Jewish Home from March 9th, 2016 to April 23rd. Although there were some glitches I give high marks and special praise to the Speech Pathology, Physical Therapy and the Nursing staff. The Speech Pathology team went beyond the call of duty and I will never forget how much care and love I received. Elana was a key person in my having a good attitude and getting better as I re-learned how to swallow and eat. The Nursing staff was extraordinary and if you get Persaud or Karen as a Nurse do whatever they say - they are amazing! The Physical Therapists taught me how to walk again and I am grateful.
Well worth.They are good Nick, Elana, Stephanie, Emily and Fay.Update: Therapy has been extremely helpful. When I got here I couldnt walk and now I can! Suzanne, Nina, and Stacey from Rehab have been incredible.
I came here to volunteer through work/NY Cares... but it turns out that Jewish Home Lifecare hosts spa/nail parties twice a month! The seniors have a great time getting hand massages, manicures, and best of all -- someone to chat with. It was a really rewarding experience!
When you have an appointment always show up an hour earlier and get them off guard. You will be surprise at what you will find. If you know someone who has a family member there go with them to get a surprise visit. It is one of the most depressing things I have seen. You will see people just left in the hallways in wheelchairs. The most of the staff is caring but have no control. Upper management is in control. These people are treated like children. They are coloring and gluing popsicle sticks. Those are activities for children not adults. If upper management meaning VP and CEOs, really cares they should hire an undercover floater and get the opinions of the lower staff only then can you realize how people are being treated. It is depressing so if you love someone dont leave them there. It is like doing time for a crime you didnt commit day after day. It is like you are being punished for being a senior citizen or as they see it OLDDDD.
My wife was at Friedman 3, room 351for rehab and the care from the CNAs and nurses were great. The doctor addressed all of our concerns and she was as good as new in no time. For us it was great!
Ive found the facility very accommodating, everything I need is available at my fingertips. I thoroughly enjoy the environment and the quality of the entertainment here. The Halloween party was terrific. Due to the great experiences that Ive had with the staff that Ive encountered, Ive decided to live here permanently.
My mother spent about six months there. My mother and with my sister they can drive anyone mad. I visited my mother twice a day, morning and evening for six months. The staff were great and very caring towards my mother. I was wrong of misjudging the staff. My apology to the staff at the Jewish Home staff.
I wasnt going to give up but looking at the reviews and having my own poor experience I think I will move on but not without sharing. So last week I came here to seek if I can volunteer. Im a deaconness in West End Presbyterian church on 105th and Amsterdam and I also live in the area. After waiting a couple of hours for a woman name Jessica whom I was suppose speak to about volunteering. Which she finally made it back after coming from another facility. I told her that im interested in volunteering for this home. She had me write my email address down and she said she would email me the application and that the next orientation would be December 22nd. I was excited. Mind you this was Thursday the 7th of December. I did not receive an email from her so I decided to call the next morning. I spoke with her and she took my email down again saying she thought she sent it. Today is Monday and I still havent received and email yet. I was going to call again today but with poor reviews of service I dont think it would be in my best interest to volunteer here. I forgive Jessica for not emailing me back but as humans should treat others better. God bless The New Jewish Home.
I am impressed by the nurses and staff taking care of my mom. I love the fact that they address each patient by their first name and get to know each patient and their needs. They are a bit understaffed but they do their very best.
This is one of worst places I have ever seen. The staff is lazy and show no care. Patients are neglected. My mother in law devolped sores due to the non care of the staff. She was given unnecessary antibiotics and the medical staff is incompetent. Patient are left in their beds until someone complains. I observed residents that were hungry and forced to eat ketchup packets because they were not fed. Avoid this place at all costs.
Mediocre, I spent 6 weeks there and the day nurses are caring and helpful the night nurses are terrible. You ring for them and when they do show up they act as though you disturbing them. I couldnt heal fast enough!
Awful. Sever shortage of staff, equipment and supplies; rehabilitation is mediocre with inconsistent non-progressive staff. Social work for patient concerns and discharge planning was a cluster of errors, conflicting information and a lack of follow through.
I wouldnt place my worst enemy here. Be greeted by the dead fish on the first floor being eaten by the live ones. Allowing people to sit in their own urine unattended? This place is a dive and I swear one more negligent- thing and I will contact the family attorney! Why? So this doesnt happen to other people/
Is it possible to give no stars? This place houses the most dishonest staff Ive ever encountered. I guess $525 a day will buy you anything. And supposedly they stole money from my mother-in-law. They dont clean frequently and the food is terrible. The social workers there are unprofessional and terrible. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone. Anyone interested -BEWARE!
Rehab here did a very great job. Now I can walk again. When I came in my hand was deformed and now I can move it freely. Ive been to other rehabs that werent helpful. I am very grateful for the care Ive received.
The worst facility to be put in for rehabilitation or just recovery. My dad was put here and the lack of support,concern and metal mental health this place offers is horrible I wish I wouldve sued them for medical malpractice
We take our students here each year to volunteer and chaperone seniors to a shabbat concert. Rabbi Malamy is always incredibly helpful, warm and caring and we so appreciate having the opportunity to work with such a wonderful organization.
I had a positive experience being an intern at TNJH Manhattan. I learned a lot, and got to work with a great team in the Marketing and Development departments.
I am a resident here and I got very very sick and they noticed it right away and sent it to NYU. NYU recommended that I go to St Lukes because it is closer. I was able to get help and The New Jewish Ho,e saved my life.
I went to visit a relative today, totally disgusted, no a/c in the patients room, hot as hell, isnt that one of the reason germs grow, l was there for 4 hours, not one nurse came around, or attendant, the other patient in my relative room, got tired of buzzing for help to get him changed, l had to get up to get someone, 45 minutes, someone came and said she was gonna send another attendant to change him, nobody came while l was there...is like the patients are there left to die...l saw no rounds, nor anybody checking on the patients, a patient could die and they will never notice...total neglect...
Dont put Your love one there .I had my mom there and the care was awful and the cnas are very mean to all the older patients .I had such a bad experience in this place ,I cried so much to see my mom so sick .I went to see her everyday so i can have some peace of mind ,The neglect is awful .Some of the cnas are racial and they all complain they dont get enough pay to have to do so much work.I can go on and on but i would need to write a book!Please if you really care and love your loved ones dont choose this place .Just because they claim is big and it has a garden that is nothing .Older people need care and compassion there are still alive and they have feelings !!!!But to the JNH is only a check and a number thats all ,Dont let them fool you please and God Help You All!. .

Had my dad here after he had a stroke and could not eat any solid food, also could not walk or take care of his own needs, the staff is sometimes rude, the place is clean , and the food is ok, but the overall experience is good if u attend to your family member every day.
First night my father arrived he fell and hit his head and they didn’t you report it bad place I am taking him out of there Monday morning

ON THE 4TH FLOOR. CNA JOANIE BOGLE AND HENRY WERE WONDERFUL. THE RNS WERE WONDERFUL TOO. THE RECEPTIONIST ASHLEY WAS REALLY GREAT. THE PT AND OT WAS OK. HOWEVER, I HAVE SEEN MUCH BETTER. THE UPKEEP OF THE DINING AREA AND PT AREA COMBINED AS ONE, SHOULD BE KEPT CLEANER.
My dad has been their for a week and Im not happy at all bathroom in his room not working not enough staff but we will see what happens by the time he goes home if things change or not I will give my final review of this place

I was visiting my aunt Ana this Sunday. Irrisari the bedrooms and bathrooms are dirty the sheets are not changed they help them to bathe with mistreatment every 4 days it is unrepentant and their food is with a lot of salt their legs are very swollen I do not see fair that if the patients are paying to be in recovery they are mistreated and even the nurses are unfriendly, he talks to them and they do not respond to you. I hope this changes.
I did not like the deal with the older person. The bathrooms are dirty, The food is badNurse one calls her with a pain and they dont come. Right now an hour ago we are waiting for a sick girl and my mother with pain.

2022-05-04Avoid putting anyone you care about in The New Jewish Home. My aunt is a resident at the Manhattan campus. They do not change her disposable briefs from Friday to Monday. Often she is left in the same clothes for 3 to 4 days. She has gone without a shower for months now. (Not an exaggeration.) Recently, she fainted from malnourishment. Her hair is falling out from the lack of nutrition. I recently discovered that they only feed her salad with nothing else-no proteins. I have talked to their nutritionist, but nothing has changed. My aunt is literally starving to death there. When I bring take out food for her, she scarfs it down like she hasnt eaten in a long time. (Because she hasnt eaten in a long time.) The evening staff refuses to wear their employee Identification in a visible manner which is a violation of NY State Law. The common refrigerator for the residents is filthy. There is nothing for the residents to eat in the refrigerator. The staff regularly takes home any fruits or sodas sent up from the kitchen for themselves. Once a month, the kitchen sends up a cake for the residents to enjoy for a group birthday for that month. The staff takes the residents cake and eats it themselves. There is filth as shown on the top of the elevator call button. I have filed many complaints with the NY state, but they fall of deaf ears. .Covid has provided the perfect cover for the staff to neglect and abuse residents as loved ones are not able to check on their family members. Every person responsible for this abuse should be charged criminally. Elder neglect and abuse is a crime. Bottom line, prisoners at Rikers Island get better treatment.Update 5/3/2022New Jewish Home continues to fail. Months of dirty laundry piled in the closet.Broken bathroom door still broken even though it’s been reported.I emailed the supervisor, but no response.

2021-11-13The staff here is incredible. By staff, I mean the nurse’s aids and room cleaners who directly took care of me. They treated me with kindness and patience which preserved my dignity and lifted my spirits.The rehabilitation therapists were second to none. Ava, Lou, and Dixon were so good that they helped me overcome my own fears to tackle the work I needed to do to progress. I intend to continue to progress, taking with me what I learned.I was in The New Jewish home for 8 months in total. I’m going home a different person, and better for having known the CNAs and physical therapists!

2022-05-06When a loved one is not well its a challenge. Life in rehab is hard with staff not always available the moment you need. Thats the reality, so when I had to find a rehab facility to help my wife I made phone calls and liked that Jewish Home Lifecare had a great visitation policy which allowed me to be with her a lot. My wife had a great room which I know is not guaranteed but made things much easier. My wife and I did our best to get to know the staff because they really are there to help and were happier to know that we appreciate the hard and efficient work they do. Our rehab team Stacey and Barbara were just fabulous both technically and in such a caring and motivational way! There were so many other great team members like Dr Ali, wound care specialist Carla, aide MeLinda and many other aides. Even the janitorial staff was helpful. There are other things at JHL to take advantage of like the library, auditorium, cafe, aviary, and outdoor courtyard and garden. Also dont miss the great sandwiches and flowers from Dukes deli down the street! Yes there are flaws in our medical system that go beyond any particular facility. I do wish some things could be improved. We chose to stay focused on the #1 goal of getting better. With the help of JHL my wife got over that hump of discomfort and uncertainty and onto recovery and feeling good about life again. We are grateful.

2022-05-30Well I was there it was during the covid 19 I was pretty much happy that I wasnt affected by it cause I was in the hospital before my sister did get some clothes before they said that visiting was not allowed during the pandemic but they were very good including the nurse who was with me at the hospital

Brother was at this Hospital and it got worse and worse and worse he was able to talk he had all his faculties but no one listen to him I had to come in and reiterate what he was telling them why. And then when things got worse they wanted to know why we were leaving between the lack of service the lack of respect that they gave to my brother who was their client, no don’t go there go somewhere else and please make sure you view the facility and ask questions don’t take it for granted that it’s good. If I could give them a half a star I would and that’s for the few people that you could count on your fingers that did do their job and take care of you.

2021-12-09I give this facility a 1 star because it has its pros and cons depending on the workers/ staff that’s there those days. My family member is currently staying in Sutro 1 and her regular aide Ms.Casey Brown that she has is always on the phone especially on speaker, i visit my family member almost everyday and she’s almost never available to tend to my family members needs it’s either she’s busy, on the phone on speaker speaking vulgar as other staff members hear and other residents. She plays music out loud with profanity. Her bed goes unchanged most days, and has dirt on them. She rarely showers or is dressed for the day. It’s as if I put my family member out on the streets and not well taken care of as the nurses and doctors promised. I will be taking my family member out this facility. Due to the negligence, and lack of attention they treat the residents with.

2021-11-04When my mother entered The New Jewish Home following a serious fall and a long hospital stay, it was hard to imagine what the future would hold. The physical and occupational therapists worked with my mother SIX days a week to improve her strength and get her back on her feet. The team (social work, nurses, PT, OT, and doctors) communicated with my mom and with us so we knew what was happening each step of the way. We are so grateful for their care!

2021-11-01Since my mother has been here she has been in very good hands..the staff calls with updates and when we go to visit she seems too be doing very well. ...she is 94yrs old and her roommates says she makes her laugh.. we have been there a few times when the social worker or doctor has come into the rooms and w were able too discuss her care and asks any questions, if needed.

2021-10-08Our close family friend, Dave, needed additional support as he could no longer live independently in the community. Debbie and Cathy expertly walked us through Dave’s options and were incredibly caring. They treated my friend with such compassion, he was literally speechless and had tears in his eyes when we hung up the phone. Thank you very much to The New Jewish Home and your outstanding staff for warmly guiding us through a challenging situation and helping us find a solution.

2020-12-30My husband spend six weeks at The New Jewish Home while recovering from broken collar bone injury. My daughter and I were shocked at the lack of professionalism, cleanliness, care, and available resources at this facility. We would visit my husband and would have to request for assistance and wait for hours to have someone come and check on him. Maybe it was the night staff that seems to care even less about the patients. My daughter and I would arrive for evening visits and would find patients asking and being ignored for things. My husband had several falls in the facility of which, at first, we were not informed of. Finally we asked to be notified of his health, falls, his general vitals but again, had to ask every day repeatedly. Maybe Nursing/Rehab places ALL operate in such manner. Again, maybe it was only the rehab place that looked in bad disrepair. They have redone the lobby of the building but the rest all looked run down and unattended. I would not recommend this facility for any elderly patients looking for rehab. I even left a message with the director of the New Jewish Home in regards to lack of professionalism of one of their social workers and never received a call back. If you are looking for a good rehab place, try Riverside Rehab. They were wonderful.
